WEDNESDAY 20 APRIL 2016

540 Runners in JG Zuma Marathon THERE has been, for the past two months, a huge build-up in Umvoti for the second JG Zuma Marathon which took place on Sunday. Now a Comrades Marathon qualifier, the race attracted 540 runners who entered online and on Saturday in Durban and Greytown. The 42.2km marathon started at Mpolweni at 5.30am on Sunday and finished at King Edward Park. President Zuma presented the winners with their awards. First man Nyedimane Chabeli Sidwell (Nedbank Running Club Klerksdorp) clocked 2:32:08 with first woman home, from Pretoria, Tabitha Tsatsa 3:03:58. With over R280 000 worth of cash prizes for the respective winning age group categories and teams, Nyedimane and Tabitha each took home R50000 much to their delight.

We do like to be beside the seaside

All finishers within the cut-off time of 11.30am received a bronze medal, cap or T-shirt and the top 10 in all age categories received a gold medal, cap and a T-shirt as well as their respective cash prizes. President JG Zuma, in presenting the prizes thanked all who had contributed towards making the 2016 marathon a huge success and mentioned how pleased he was at the increase in the numbers taking part. The Greytown Gazette congratulates the 150 marshals and others from Umvoti and Muden Athletic clubs and Umvoti Municipality who cleared the litter from the marathon route and King Edward Park by 5pm on Sunday.

SPARE a thought for your hardworking councillors, because they are being forced to spend three days at the three-star Hampshire Hotel in Ballito taking part in the Umvoti Strategic Planning Workshop from 18 to 21 April. A total of 45 councillors and municipal employees are attending, which is being paid for by ratepayers. Queries - why if councillors terms of office end in May a workshop now? Why the cost of a three-star, threeday stay in Ballito instead of in Greytown? Although Umvoti Municipality obviously got a bulk discount for the reported hardworking attentive group of 45, even a failed accountancy student could reckon the final account to be paid (on behalf of ratepayers?) could not be much less than R280 000 to R300 000.

Inkosi Bafana Zondi leads Zondi tribe

Inkosi Bafana Bongokuhle Zondi has been welcomed and declared the leader of Isizwe saseNgome

FOR the past seven years the Zondi tribe has been without a leader since the killing of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi in January 2009. Now, to the tribe’s joy, a new leader, Inkosi Bafana Bongokuhle Zondi, has been welcomed and declared the leader of Isizwe saseNgome. This was gazetted in the provincial Government Gazette of 5 February. On Saturday 2 April the family of the Inkosi was formally informed of this by officials from Cogta. The family welcomed the news with resounding applause signaling relief after seven years of confusion. On Monday 11 April the inkosi took the oath of office before the Greytown magistrate signaling his

ascendance to the throne and on 12 April he joined a number of traditional leaders in the Umzinyathi District, with the purpose of sharpening their swords. Inkosi Bafana is a direct descendent of the Inkosi Bambatha ka Mancinza of the Poll Tax rebellion in 1906, who led guerilla warfare against the white regime at the time. The family is confident that Inkosi Bafana will follow in the footsteps of his great-grandfather and will do well in his new role to uplift his community. He has been groomed by experienced traditional leaders, including the late Inkosi Simakade Mchunu learning the ropes. Inkosi Bafana will next year further his studies as he believes

e-mail gazette@futuregtn.co.za

that tertiary education will make him better equipped to lead the community. This year he will be busy with Cogta short courses, which will be of benefit to the community. A top priority for Inkosi Bafana will be to expedite the unveiling of the Inkosi Bambatha statue in Greytown - this function was postponed from last September as the family felt the inkosi should be part of the ceremony. The Zondi family thanks those that stood by them when they lost their son in 2009, and to the institutions and individuals who gave support when there was no inkosi leading the family and the tribal council. - Sandile Zondi, family spokesperson.

Few antifrackers at film IT can only be hoped that the poor attendance at the anti-fracking documentary, The High Cost of Cheap Gas, was because Umvoti residents are against the possibility of fracking anywhere in KZN or South Africa. South Africa is a water-strapped country – hundreds of thousands of South African are suffering seriously from the impact of the current drought. Any decisions by government to grant overseas companies the right to frack would worsen the already critical water

supply. About 60 individuals took the time last Tuesday to attend the viewing in the town hall – this included the active “Concerned Young People” group from KwaSizabantu. The award-winning documentary graphically shows the negative impact of fracking on the environment, on the lives of people where it has been carried out and the pollution of water and ground resources and so on. The claim by the frackers that it creates much-

needed employment and generates income for local communities is hotly disputed. With regard to the film director Jeff Barbee was present to answer queries. Anti-frackers expressed their appreciation to Umvoti Municipality for organising the event and for not charging for the use of the town hall, to Rawstornes @268 for accommodation and to Albert of Yhokoza Mavovo Trading Enterprise for the sound system and TV screens.

Wedding gift with a different helps many WHEN Riem and Carol Scheuer married in 1989, rather than a conventional wedding gift, Carol’s new mother-law, Lettie Scheuer, instead gave her a small farm school called Fortmannspruit Primary School. The couple were and are active members of KZN Agricultural Union (Kwanalu). Now almost 27 years later, the school has grown to more than five times its original size, boasting new classrooms, upgraded facilities and daily meals to cater for 142 children. Fortmannspruit Primary School was founded in 1982 on Mooiplaats farm in New Hanover, by the Scheuer family, with just 28 pupils, two teachers and two small buildings. Registered as a Section 14 government school, it offers education from crèche to Grade 7 mostly to rural communities in the surrounding area. Since inheriting the school, Carol and her daughter Jo have worked

tirelessly to maintain and develop the modest farm school - investing their hearts and their time to caring for its children and their well being. Not only are they responsible for repairs, maintenance, water and electricity, they also look after pupils’ daily medical needs. “We don’t do it alone though,” said Carol. The school has captured the hearts of a small group of Australian fund-raisers called “Dare to Care”, which facilitates fund-raising initiatives to assist Carol in her efforts to make a difference to the lives of the children at the school. Carol’s sister in Australia got a group of friends together to fund-raise and they regularly send clothing, education supplies and finance to help in the building of a better school and environment for the youngsters. Their fund-raising has contributed to a new Grade R classroom, pay for a Grade R teacher and funding the purchase of 87 bicycles, so in-

Page 3

stead of walking to school and back every day, the children now ride to and from school. Dare to Care is also helping to further the education of some of the school’s poorest and brightest pupils. Plant a Mustard Seed is one of the group’s programmes, which each year sponsors two graduates to attend the nearby Cool Air Secondary School. “We wouldn’t function without these funds and the help we get from our Australian angels and our local community,” says Carol. Thanks to Carol’s tireless petitioning, the children at Fortmannspruit are given a full meal every day, subsidised by the government. “I fully understand why so many have washed their hands of the schools on their land, but I can’t give up. It is because of the injustices I see every day and the few chances that they, the children, have, that I feel driven to do something, anything to give them a better life,” said Carol. “On a lighter note, I hope that one day, when my son eventually finds himself a wife, I will be able to pass our special school on to her as a wedding gift.” - Heather Mullon: Urban House Media. Over 4 000 new voters in Umvoti

The question of voter's addresses has come to the fore through the Constitutional Court last year declaring that the 2013 Tlokwe by-elections had not been free and fair in that all new voters registered had to have address details. In February the Electoral Court again halted these byelections in view of missing addresses of over 4 000 voters. In May the Con Court will rule on the requirement of voter's addresses on the voter's roll. A number of political parties are very active in Umvoti - not only in the 14 wards, but also making considerable use of social media.

WITH the build-up to the local government elections on 3 August, 58 357 voters out of a potential 80 000 are now registered on the Umvoti voter's roll and will make their mark in one of the 14 Umvoti wards. In a report to the Greytown Gazette IEC Greytown manager Chris Naidoo said that a total of 2 545 new voters had registered over the weekend of 9 and 10 April - altogether 8 000 individuals had visited the 90 voting stations in Umvoti. At the previous voter's registration weekend in March, 2 000 new voters had been registered. As we are trying to finish the house - number 10, we don't know the colour yet - the money will be very welcome towards this. We still need to finish the roof, plaster the

walls, tile the floors, do electrical and plumbing, as well painting and furnishing it. When it is finished we will be able to care for more orphans and abandoned children. DURING the Easter break, the 1st hockey team travelled to Potchefstroom for their 2016 tour. This tour offered knowledge and skill necessary for the upcoming season. The girls played nine games and won five out of the nine. We would like to thank our sponsors Umvoti Logquip and AW Auto for their assistance in making this tour possible. On Saturday 9 April, the 1st team travelled to Estcourt to face

their 1st side. Greytown played a well-structured game scoring five goals leaving the end score 5-0 goal scorers were Jay-Dee Moodley (2), Thandi Mnguni, Danielle Kotze and Snobuhle Ntuli. On Saturday 16 April, the team played against Empangeni High 1st team in Empangeni, although the match was dominated by Greytown, the team was unable to score and was defeated 2-0. Hermannsburg Happenings CAMP fires, exploring forts, spider stories, “speed boats”, scavenger hunts - these and many more excited tales were brought home by our tired but happy primary school pu-

pils. At the start of this term, Grade 1 to Grade 6 pupils went to the Wagondrift Eco-camp, with the first highlight being a visit to Fort Durnford (Estcourt), built on a rise over-

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle THE past two weeks were filled with learning about various living environments, such as houses and apartments, and the different rooms in each. Our Little Oaks learnt more about each other and where their friends live, and also about how people lived long time ago. Our wonderful Hermannsburg Mission Museum is a great place to go back in time - to learn about history and helps us to understand change and societal development. We had a look how people cooked a long time ago, how their living rooms were different from ours today and at what toys the children played with. History is important to us - we are who we are today because of those who have gone before us.

Other items included a night walk looking for eyes reflecting from the bush, a camp concert where each tent group came up with their own choice of a performance having something of Wagondrift in their play, song or sketch, which was great fun with even the teachers doing a sketch (which was greatly enjoyed). A huge thank you to Andrew and his Wagondrift crew, who looked after the group so well - the pupils and teachers had a great time. The Grade 1 to Grade 6 group returned to Hermannsburg on the same day as the Grade 7 pupils, who spent a week touring Mpumalanga and spots along the way. As well as visiting Sabie and sur-

roundings, the Kruger Park, the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, the Hoedspruit Cheetah Project, Graskop, Swadini, Tshukudu Lodge, Pilgrim’s Rest and the St Lucia estuary, they also participated in night and day game drives, boat trips on the Blyde Dam and the St Lucia estuary, helped dissect an impala and a trout and zip-lined over the Graskop Gorge, among many other exciting experiences. Thank you to Mrs Marx and to all the many people who hosted and guided the group. At the Umzinyathi hockey trials, Zothani Dlamini and Imke Marx were selected for the U18 team, Angelika Meyer and Clara Kohrs (non-travelling reserve) for the U16 team, and Erin Whittle, Lila de Wet and Jemma Hayward for the U14 team. In other hockey news, the 1st team girls lost 4-1 to Wembley while the U16 girls drew all their matches 0-0 against Wartburg A, Wartburg B, Wembley and Domino Servite. Playing against Carter at Hermannsburg, the U14 girls drew 0-0, the U16 girls lost 2-0 and the 1st team lost 4-0. The boys’ hockey match against Alex ended 0-11. On the rugby field, our Open team played St Nicholas (10-15) and Wartburg (0-52) while the Junior team played St Nicholas (29-0) and Wembley (33-7).

Window on Wembley REDUCE, reuse, recycle. The 2016 fashion show was a runway of creative ideas and outfits. From hand-me-downs from siblings, painted robots, filling Dad’s shoes to outfits made of all sorts of recycling mediums, everything was an explosion of creativity. We were also honoured to experience the creative genius of our own Form 6 pupil, Nosipho Ndawonde, with her re- styled couture. A special word of thanks to our sponsors, staff and pupils who were involved in making this evening a success - we appreciate the support shown by the parents in creating the outfits. Wembley College hosted a small rugby day that was attended by Greytown Junior, Mount Curro and Wartburg pupils. The conditions were near perfect and Wembley’s approach was to use this day as trials to gauge where our players stand. They played four games of 10 minutes each and the coaches had to play with a revised squad each time as our policy was

The most exciting aspect of the day was the fact that the U11 boys fielded a squad of 16 players and the U13 boys a squad of 19 players. This means that we are yet again another step closer to playing the 15-man game format. One of the goals we have set is to play the 15man format this season. If we accomplish this, it will be the first time in many years that we see Wembley College fielding more than seven players. Please support us in achieving this goal. Be patient, save fuel WITH the recent increases in fuel, interest and electricity consumers need to look for ways to cut costs. Les McMaster, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), says in hard times many are scrambling to meet the running costs of their vehicle and one of the most obvious ways is to improve fuel economy. "It may seem petty, but being a considerate, patient driver is good for your fuel tank. Aggressive, agitated drivers tend to stop and start abruptly, especially in city traffic, and this places a lot Memorial Service of wear and tear on the car. for the late Take it easy on your brakes and transmission and your KAREN MARGARET car, and fuel tank will return WEATHERDON the favour." Myth: You may have to Beloved mother, sister drive a smaller car. and friend will take Many of the most fuel-effiplace at cient cars in the world are Shalom Farm on mid-size or large cars. Myth: You need to warm Friday (22 April) your car up before driving. at 1.00 pm. Modern cars can be driven

within seconds of being started, and the quickest way to warm up a car's engine is in fact to drive it. Myth: As a car ages, so its fuel efficiency decreases. A car that is properly maintained, no matter what the age, will retain its fuel efficiency for many years. Myth: Manual transmissions get better fuel economy than automatics Advances in automatic transmissions have improved their efficiency to the point that automatic vehicles often get the same or even better fuel economy than manual transmission vehicles. Myth: Keep your windows and air conditioner off on a long road trip. This makes no difference to your fuel usage at all. Fact: Make sure the tyres are the right pressure. Underinflated tyres can reduce your fuel efficiency by up to three percent. Fact: Stick to the speed limit. This could save you over 10% on fuel, and even more on the highways. Fact: Don't idle your vehicle. Turning the ignition off instead of idling, even for just a minute or more, can save you almost 20% on fuel. Fact: Avoid rush hour. It's near impossible for thousands of motorists to avoid it, but stay out of rush hour if you can - the constant starting, stopping and idling is a fuel economy killer. Fact: Keep the boot light. Extra weight in the boot requires extra power and extra fuel from your engine, especially if you drive a smaller car. "The bottom line is that good fuel economy starts with driving a fuel-efficient car, buddying-up on trips, and maintaining your car. The tips we've provided will help to keep the needle out of the red to provide that muchneeded budget breather," McMaster concludes. - MIWA.

St Cathryn’s news THE Tuta Carriers St Cathryn’s Club Championship was played in near to perfect weather this weekend. Golfers on Saturday were met by a fairly strong breeze at first that calmed down later. Sunday was perfect golfing weather. To accommodate all golfers the committee allowed three golfers to play 36 holes on Sunday, due to family and work commitments they had on the Saturday. If you speak to the senior golfers in the club you will be told that in the “grand old days” that is how club champs were played - 36 holes in one day. The rough on the 4th and 13th hole caught a few players and slowed the field down a few times prompting club captain Brent Barkhuizen to declare that he would sponsor a new rough mower. Farmers’ Agri Care Monthly Mug was also played during the weekend and Liekie Steyn walked off

with the Mug with an unbelievable nett 64 score. Divisions we had for the day were A division, B division, C division, la-

dies and juniors, tee to pin members as well as St Cathryn’s home owners. We are proud to say we had players representing golfers in all the divisions. Results: A division: 1st Lawrence Savage Gross 169, Merwin Rabe Gross 171

We golfers are fortunate that KZN golf clubs are expected to hold their annual championships during April every year, due to autumn in the KZN Midlands being a wonderful time to be out on the golf course. All the marvellous autumn sights, sounds and smells remind us that we are truly blessed. The annual FNB Greytown Country Club golf championship was held on 16 and 17 April under the guidance of new men’s captain, Tienie Muller, assisted by club manager Elmarie Dede. After two sunny days of golf Bheki Mlangeni successfully defended his crown with a score of 148 gross. Second was Boy Zuma on 154 gross. Rest of the results: B division: Goodboy Ngubane, C division: Berndt Elges, Best net overall: Goodboy Ngubane, seniors: Tienie Muller. Stableford winner on day one was Goodboy Ngubane and day two was Tienie Muller. Our thanks to our sponsor, FNB Greytown, and our greenskeeper Wally Kohne, who presented a very enjoyable golf course, despite a serious lack of water. Our ladies’ championship will be held at a later date. Dates to diarise Wednesday 20 April – AGM Saturday 23 April – Pannar Golf day Friday 29 April – Happy Hour.
