Phase 2 emergency water intervention updates

PHOTO: NGCIBA MAHANGA

Team KZN Absa, led by Mr Sithembiso Cele, responded to Umvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane’s call to assist in the refurbishment of Buhlebuyeza High on Sunday as an early Mandela Day project. Not only did they respond with a generous sponsorship of R20 000 to Buhlebuyeza, they also contributed more than four hours of their time to hard labour. There was a good turnout to assist in the general clean up by municipal personnel and the community.

Water, good news dribbles out EXACTLY one month ago Greytown taps ran dry resulting in residents either having to queue at the street Jojo tanks or pay for the transport of water to fill home tanks or tapping into their private boreholes. It has not been easy and it has not been made any easier by the handful who have been abusing the Jojo water supply. At the water meeting, which had been called for last Thursday by water service provider Umzinyathi District Municipality and conducted by Umvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane, there was some positive and some negative news. Over the past six months the Greytown Gazette has almost weekly requested information from Umzinyathi about the progress of the Craigieburn pipeline with little, if any response. However, at the meeting Mayor Ngubane and Umzinyathi Municipal Manager Dr Thombela admitted that the two municipalities had been at fault for not taking action sooner about the lack of progress, but that the services of the three errant contractors had now been terminated and investigations would be carried out to check whether there had been any misdoings by government officials involved. In reply to a question from the floor Dr Ntombela said the new contractors would be appointed on merit and not through political connections. The street Jojo tanks were part of the short-term intervention the Mayor said, which was been backed by Phase 2 of the water intervention project (see separate report on this page). The Craigieburn pipeline was the longterm intervention - this project was being accelerated, monitored by the Department of Water and a technical task team, which

would keep a close watch on the completion of this project hopefully by September or at the latest, December. Mention was also made of the large number of private boreholes, owners of which should use this water sparingly as this had led to some of the municipal boreholes drying up. Muden was experiencing serious problems as the Muden canal had collapsed. Dredging Lake Merthley would cost as much as building a new dam and the wall

e-mail gazette@futuregtn.co.za

would take strain. Plans drawn up years ago for two possible dams in Umvoti would be looked at. Umvoti by-laws would be “fine-tuned” and tightened to enforce municipal action on illegal car washes etc. Once again an appeal to all - although from Friday there will once again be a limited supply of water to households - the situation is still classified as a disaster and residents are requested to continue their good work in saving water.

“THE main contractor and management of phase 2 emergency water intervention, wish to inform the citizens of Greytown that by Friday 22 July, stage 1 will come online. This means we will be able to supply about 1 000 000 litres of water per 24 hours to the water treatment works. Stage 2 will come online in about two weeks, supplying another 800 000 litres per 24 hours. Under normal conditions, when the water supply was open 24 hours a day, Greytown used 5 500 000 litres a day on average. When water was open for four hours in the morning, Greytown used 1 400 000 litres a day on average, including the supply to community Jojo tanks. We ask consumers to continue using water sparingly. Umvoti is an extremely water-stressed area and will remain so for a long time to come. Keep a lookout for next week's Greytown Gazette for an update on stage 2.

Candidate code of conduct signed

Committing to free, fair and peaceful elections as Greytown Magistrate Mr C.F. Masikane read the Code of Conduct were Umvoti Councillor Nzama (ANC), Mr Felix Maharaj (DA candidate), Mr Zibuso Ndlovu (Independent candidate), Councillor Petros Ngubane (IFP), Sipho Madlala (EFF candidate), Mr Bongani Mzila (Independent candidate) and Mr Patrick Khoza (Independent candidate).

sure the elections were free and fair. Updated information on Umvoti's election readiness was given by electoral project co-ordinator Mr Benson Ngcobo, who said 58 550 voters could cast their vote on 3 August 118 candidates were standing for the 14 Ward seats - a further 13 PR would take their seats in council chambers making a total of 27 to represent Umvoti. Mr Chris Naidoo of Greytown IEC told the Greytown Gazette that 695 had registered for special votes and a further 491 for home visits - these votes take place on 1 and 2 August. The Code-ofConduct signing cere-mony was organised by Greytown IEC, and apart from a late start, went smoothly. The normally staid proceedings were somewhat livelier this time round as EFF and IRP supporters (separately) sang and danced.

G911 stalwart Dave Carroll

98, and still going strong

DAVE Carroll is one of the founders of G911- this community-based call centre began 18 years ago. It was after a close friend, Gussi Daniel, was murdered in Ahrens that Dave and a few others decided it was time to start a community-based control room to assist with security issues in the area. This tragic murder was the catalyst for G911. The intention of the organisation is to assist the community during crisis situations. Dave who manages G911 enjoys working in a community-based organisation and commends Greytown for its community spirit. Residents are appreciative of Dave’s input and dedication to this unique community driven initiative. G911 featured in Fokus, an SABC television programme last week highlighting the community work it is doing. On behalf of G911 Dave is appealing to all who make use of the comprehensive assistance and services provided by G911, to donate to this organisation, which is here to assist 24/7 in an emergency or with road and security information.

Congratulations to Mrs Elfriede Marie Ida Kohne, who celebrated her 98th birthday at Arcadia on 14 July. Very much part of the district Elfrieda was born, grew up and married in New Hanover. She and her husband were together for 63 years – but as this very bright lady says ‘she is now still single’. Elfrieda has lived through and seen many changes since her birth last century in 1918. She has two children, six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Fire awareness prevention better than cure THE Umvoti Fire Protection Association (UFPA) has been working closely with Mondi, Sappi, Working on Fire (WoF), Buffalo Protection Services and the Umvoti Disaster Management to address fire awareness among schools and communities in Umvoti district believing that prevention is better than cure. One of WoF functions is to promote fire awareness - the presentation team have been trained and are experienced in conveying this message to the community. These presentations focus on general fire awareness, safety and the prevention of fire. The WoF team have completed their school visits in the area and are now concentrating on visiting the Umvoti community, where it is felt that the "door-to-door" visits

are often most successful when addressing this subject among the community. The UFPA has a sniffer dog, Smirrie, who has been specially trained to track suspected arson suspects who start fires in plantations and on farms. The services of this hound is available free of charge to UFPA members. This dog is managed by Buffalo Protection Services and where possible, depending on his duties, will accompany the WoF team on their tours to the schools and the communities. The fire awareness presentation is followed by a demonstration of Smirrie and Cole (his handler) showing the hound at work, following the scent of a “arson suspect” who has hidden. Due to the drought, conditions are extremely dry and it does not take much for a fire to spread rapidly with the potential to cause severe destruction. The Umvoti Fire Protection Association once again appeals to the community to be extremely cautious and act responsibly when dealing with fire. Please report any wild fires to Golf 911 on 033 417 2911 or 076 402 7772 and they will undertake the appropriate action.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle WHAT an adventure, travelling through Africa for a whole year in a camping truck. Which is exactly what Germans Katrin and Stefan Waldenburg, and their five children did. For the past year their home was a 1978 Mercedes-Benz LA 911 Rundhaube (because there were seven of them in the truck throughout their journey, they called it “Snow White”). When they stopped off at our school for a couple of days, camping under the trees above the sports fields, the Little Oaks used the opportunity to take a closer look. They were impressed that

The Waldenburg family with some of our Little Oaks in front of ‘Snow White’ in the campsite on the Hermannsburg school grounds. seven people could cook, eat, sleep, shower and even go to the toilet in the truck, and Mr and Mrs Waldenburg had many questions to answer as the inquiring minds of our Little Oaks explored every aspect of such an undertaking. Hermannsburg Happenings FOR two decades our school has fostered good relations with créches and outreach projects in our areas. One of these projects is the “Jehova Ngihlenge Créche” (God save us) at Ntunjambili, which was founded by Mr Douglas Sithole and is now run by his widow, Mrs Margaret. A few years ago, sponsors from Germany, who were supporting the créche, invited her to visit Germany. She was keen on the idea, but needed to time the trip to fit in with the créche being closed for school holidays and insisted that a German-Zulu translator accompany her on this exciting trip. After a few months of planning and negotiating, it was decided

Margaret Sithole and Stella Cockburn at the world’s biggest bird park in Walsrode, Germany. that Stella Cockburn (our German-speaking Zulu teacher and long-standing outreach programme co-ordinator) should accompany her. The two-and-a-half-week trip was a Thank you, siyabonga and dankeschön to thank Margaret for the selfless and efficient way in

She in turn wanted to thank the sponsors and supporters who have all either lived in or visited South Africa and have contributed to the success of the outreach projects of our school. The first stop in Hamburg, was followed by a four-day stay in Celle, four days in the German Hermannsburg, a quick three days in Cologne, a trip to Denmark, and the return to Hamburg to catch the flight home. The trip proved a wonderful opportunity to meet with friends, former colleagues, former pupils and voluntary workers, who reminisced to find out about the latest developments at the school, especially with regard to the outreach projects. For Margaret it was a dream come true and a well-deserved treat in recognition of her many years’ hard work.

‘Sugar Daddies’ comes Greytown THE Playhouse Company is taking its Sugar Daddies on tour to KZN high schools and will be in Greytown at Buhlebuyeza High on Friday 22 July at 9am. The performance is staged on a mobile stage which the Playhouse personnel provide, which means there is space for a large audience. The production is being restaged after a successful run in 2014 when it played to over 20 000 pupils. This "anti-blesser" play is of high interest, topical and focuses on the current and prevalent practice of older, often married, men with financial means having very young girlfriends.

These young girls are often seeking a way to achieve a better lifestyle without realising the consequences and implications of their actions. The production highlights the irresponsible behaviour of these “sugar daddies” or “blessers”, as they are often called, and seeks to help young women to avoid falling victim to these predators. This work is directed by Edmund Mhlongo, with a cast that includes Ngcebo Cele, Heather Gielink, Annalisa Gxabu, Vumani Khumalo, Nompilo Maphumulu, Phumlani Ngubane, Sandile Nxumalo and Snelisiwe Radebe. For further information, contact Khulekani on 031 369 9440.

Greytown players in KZN hockey tournament Shayna Hattingh, of Greytown High, and Ashleigh Mason of Wembley College recently represented KZN U16 Country Districts at the regional interprovincial hockey tournament in Potchefstroom. KZN finished sixth out of 14 teams, winning two games, drawing two and losing one in their pool matches.

Greytown Racing Pigeon Club results DOUGLAS was our race point last weekend and what a race it turned out to be. After a 7.30am liberation we sat the whole of Saturday afternoon waiting in vain as the first arrival only arrived home to the Naicker Bros at 9.11am on Sunday to record a winning velocity of 786.754 for the distance of 666kms. They also clocked second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh at 10.25,10.48, 11.23, 11.58 and 12.03 to have six birds clocked from 10 sent. Old Grizzle filled the fifth position at 11.48 to give him 50% returns. Chris Uys had 100% returns when he clocked at 14.13.

The weather has not been kind to the birds this season so far and we can only hope that a good rain would turn things around, but that does not seem to be in the offing anytime soon. It is now breeding season so here's hoping these youngsters will fly better next year, better than their forbears are doing right now. Next week is a 345km yearling race from Winburg. Douglas results: Naicker Bros: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 786.754, 747.645/783.719, 702,465, 677.042, 673.690. T.R. Tatham: 5th: 684.074, Chris Uys: 8th: 594.955 Good flying.

July is Mental Health Awareness Month JULY is Mental Health Awareness Month when people with mental problems are encouraged to find the help and treatment they need. It is estimated that a fifth of South Africans will experience a depressive disorder at least once during their lifetime and more than 60% will not get the necessary help. According to the SA Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) the biggest danger of anxiety and depression is suicide and the incidence of suicide has soared. For people with a metal disorder, people who lost a loved one or undergone a trauma the sense of isolation can be as destructive as their diagnosis or the traumatic event says Sadag. Depression is not just a temporary “wobble” that an individual can snap out of - it can last for many years, but there is a

treatment available which can make a big difference to the lives of many. There are three main types of depression: Main depression – disturbing episodes of severe depression, dysthymia - long-lasting but less severe type of depression and bipolar disorder - episodes of depression and elation. Depression may be caused by a combination of many factors including: external events, genetic inheritance, imbalance of brain chemicals, certain medical conditions, various medications, substance abuse. SPORT NEWS St Cathryn’s news THOSE who watched the British open will agree, Stenson is good, in fact he is a "Sweedse doring". He didn’t show much emotion even when Michelson was level with him during certain stages. In fact Phil took the early lead on the first hole on the final day of play, when Stenson dropped a shot. Stenson became a deserving winner, his first major. A very interesting fact to all green keepers who read our report, is that on the Saturday the greens were not mowed to slow the greens down, so don't feel bad if at the British open they can skip a day in cutting the greens - you can also have a rest day in between major tournaments. We will however make sure the greens are mowed

this Saturday. This coming weekend we invite golfers, members and non-members to play in our Farmers’ AgriCare Monthly Mug and Sanlam Cancer Challenge. The winners of the Sanlam Cancer challenge, in the four divisions, will play the next round and should you win there, you get to play at Sun City in the finals. Let's support this worthy fundraiser, because all funds raised will go towards cancer and cancer research. We all know someone who has cancer and or has died from this disease. It will also be the opportune time to collect your new national handicap card as we have just been issued with new handicap cards. Supper this Friday at the book club will be roast chicken and vegetables. To book for golf and/or meals, phone 083 2693 1661 or 082 555 2661.
