‘Shut up...close your eyes... I’ll kill you’ WHAT turns a pleasant normal Sunday evening into a nightmare - a young man, probably in his early 20s with a stocking pulled over his face, walking through your front door, into your bedroom with a screwdriver in one hand, and a repetitive haunting refrain, “I am going to kill you”. The Greytown Gazette Editor was on a mission to tidy up the house in the early evening and just about to shut the front door when she was confronted by this apparition walking down the passage. Forcing her onto her knees he said he was desperate for money … followed by the cold statement, "I will kill you." I said I had no money in the house - reply, “You work for the government you have money.” I pointed out, still on my knees that this was not true, I actually work for the Greytown Gazette - to which he replied,
"What's that?" He then told me he did not want to be arrested again. He insisted I had to keep my eyes shut even though I could not see any features through the stocking over his head. After being dragged to the kitchen, where I thought my wallet was, I slipped and cut my face and consequently now had bloodsmeared walls and carpets, and back down the passage to find the wallet - which was empty. He kept repeating he had to have money - interspersed with "I will kill you". As these statements were backed up by him trying to throttle me and the screwdriver being flourished - I said would give him my bank cards and pin code. Keeping up his repetitive chorus - he tied my hands tightly behind my back with clothing, then pushed me down into the wardrobe
‘You work for the government you have money’
- my legs were then tied tightly together and I was tightly gagged (as a result of which have Botoxed lips). He made me repeat the code, but kept on saying I was lying and he would kill me. Eventually he tied the wardrobe handles together saying he would get the money and come back to free me. I have no concept how long it took me it seemed forever - to contort, stretch, wriggle, and pray to free my one arm. I then untied my legs, removed the gag and used my cellphone, which fortunately had been in a jacket in the wardrobe, to phone 911. From there on I can only say a huge and heartfelt thank you to Mzigi, Field SAPS, Dr Roodt, and all the wonderful friends who responded with care and support on hearing the news. At the time of going to press the search is still ongoing for the young man. It is not the sort of happening I would wish on my worst enemy - but I am alive and that is what counts.
Frack offers score THE “frack offers” have scored a significant victory in KZN compelling the Texas-based oil exploration company, Rhino Oil and Gas Exploration, to cut back on its original proposals after an enormous total and very voluble public rejection by the provinces residents. Last year the company lodged an exploration application which covered over a million hectares of KZN involving 10 000 farms. Due to the explosive negative response from the public to the mere suggestion of fracking the company has now cut back its scale to 850 000 ha and about 6 700 farms. At a series of public meetings called by the environmental consultants, SLR, on behalf of Rhino, the reaction in Greytown and throughout the Midlands and northern Natal was an emphatic “no”. SLR have acknowledged that there had been “extremely strong” and almost unanimous public opposition to the exploration plan, which could ultimately involve “fracking” with the emphasis being on the environmental destruction, the negative and widespread impact on land and water supply with devastating effects on the livelihoods and social structures. In its statement released last week the consultants said: “The perception is informed by the widely publicised negative impacts of hydraulic fracturing and the decisions taken by many governing bodies around the world to suspend such activities. “The related concern is that once an exploration right is granted, it will be nearly impossible to stop the process later. For these reasons the public approach is to close the door on exploration before it opens, thereby preventing any future risk, or potential benefit, from resulting.” However, despite the opposition, consultants have recommended that exploration go ahead anyway, but it will not be groundbased exploration. The company will focus on an aerial survey method - if this aerial survey suggested commercially viable re-
serves of oil and gas, further environmental studies would have to be undertaken before any drilling or exploration activities.” Responding to the announcement the coalition group Frack Free South Africa said: “Remember, there is a very real possibility of Rhino selling the information they gather to another company, who could then proceed with extraction. “So we don’t want them to get the data - no matter that the techniques are non-invasive.” The coalition group said the threat to lives and livelihoods in KZN remained real. “Coal bed methane exists where our water factories are located and will impact our water supplies to the detriment of everyone.
“Mining is already responsible for the disruption of the social fabric of communities and towns across South Africa and no area is able to claim to be better off as a result of mining.” Members of the public, who would like to comment on the draft environmental impact report should do so before October 14. Visit www.ccaenvironmental.co.za for information on the revised exploration map. Copies of the report are available for viewing at Greytown, New Hanover and Msinga libraries. A public feedback meeting, called by the consultants will be held in Greytown on Thursday 6 October at 3.30pm in the Greytown Community hall.
Water update IT was a sound Greytonians had not heard for many a month. The drumming of raindrops on a tin roof. With up to 44mls rainfall recorded last week even the most cynical are now cautiously admitting that those much-wanted and needed spring rains might just happen. Lake Merthley now stands at 16.41% full. There is still no response from Umzinyathi District Municipality to requests for information on the Craigieburn pipeline timeline. The trenches already dug are filling up with soil and grass and the thousands of pipes piled up by the previous contractors are in the process of being degraded. This scheme is now way over completion time and even more over budget. Every day that passes the pipeline becomes more and more of a pipe dream.

“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” - Alex Haley AT New Hanover Prep, the aim of celebrating Grandparents Day is to honour grandparents, to give them an opportunity to show their love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. This annual highlight in the school calendar again involved each class presenting a varied programme of poetry and song as well as personal messages. Grandparents then visited the classes, participating in a wide range of meaningful activities to bring the generations closer and celebrate the value of intergenerational relationships. They were then treated to a selection of eats with their tea.

Next on the list of stars GREYTOWN’S Deante Swart, Little Miss World 2016, continues to hit the headlines. She has been signed up by a well-known Johannesburg South African modelling agency that works with major companies in magazine, television, outdoor, etc., advertising.

In October Deante will be taking part in international arts and talent auditions for acting and modelling. This takes place in front of an American talent scout looking for talent for the Disney and Nickledeon channel and overseas modelling contracts.
Deva and Dilly Govender travelled from Durban to be with their granddaughter Mikaila Kistan. Grandparents are precious to us as they are our continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and

Stealing water from a fire hydrant This bakkie, with an NP registration, was caught on camera by an alert resident as the driver happily filled up a number of 20litre containers from a fire hydrant in what was the old CNA Centre in Pine Street. The question arises, how irresponsibly low can you get.

SATURDAY 24 September is Heritage Day - a day on which South Africans are encouraged to come together to celebrate the great diversity of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that make up this country. In KwaZulu-Natal, 24 September was formerly known as Shaka Day, in commemoration of the Zulu king, King Shaka Zulu. In Parliament the IFP objected to the proposed Public Holidays Bill as it omitted Shaka Day. A compromise was reached when it was decided to create a day where South Africans could observe, share and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage. This day is also known as National Braai Day. The idea has had some high profile converts, the most notable being that of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, ,who in 2007 was made the national spokesperson for "Braai Day", and is quoted as saying: "We're going to have this wonderful thing on the 24th of this month ... when we all gather round one fire. It's a fantastic thing, a very simple idea. Irrespective of your politics, of your culture, of your race, of your whatever, hierdie ding doen ons saam ... just South Africans doing one thing together, and recognising that we are a fantastic nation." The National Heritage Council of South Africa defines heritage as: "Heritage is what is preserved from the past as the living collective memory of a people not only to inform the present about the past but also to equip successive generations to fashion their future. It is what creates a sense of identity and assures rootedness and continuity, so that what is brought out by dynamism of culture is not changed for its own sake, but it is a result of people's conscious choice to create a better life." National Heritage Resources Act of 1999 states that our heritage is unique and precious and cannot be renewed. Included in the list of heri-

I would like to thank you all most sincerely for your friendship and co-operation over the past 18 years. I hope 911 continues to go from strength to strength." - Dave Carroll.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle “TOYS” was our Little Oaks’ last theme for this term - we looked at the materials that toys are made of, and which toys we can use inside, outside or in both places. They visited the Hermannsburg Mission House Museum to look at the toys with which our
great-grandparents played, with the highlight being the toy party, where everyone could bring his or her favourite toy to school. The Little Oaks drew pictures of their toys, had a show-andtell session and a teddy-bears’ picnic.
Little Oaks’ (from left) Emma Reibeling, Akhiwe Sidu and Naseeha Randera show off their favourite toys and their drawings of them.
September has many birthstones WHILE most sources quote the sapphire as the birthstone for September an American jeweller says there is a choice of seven - sapphire, Lapis Lazuli, Peridot, Sardoyxl, Zircon, Moonstone or Agate. Sapphires are referred to as the “celestial” stone ranging in blues from cornflower to dark and inky. It was the gem of Apollo, the Greek God of prophesy and worn by worshippers visiting his shrine in Delphi to seek help. Said to represent purity of the soul, it was worn by priests as protection from impure thoughts and temptations of the
flesh. Warriors presented their young wives with sapphire necklaces so they would remain faithful in the belief that the stone’s colour would darken if worn by an adulterer or adulteress. Sapphires were once believed to be protection against snakes. It was said that if poisonous reptiles and spiders were placed in a jar containing the stone they would immediately die. The French of the 13th century believed that sapphire transformed stupidity to wisdom, and irritability to good temper. Lapis Lazuli, also blue, is said to enhance awareness and creativity and is also known the
stone of purity. In ancient times Peridot was the traditional birthstone for September – green to yellow in colour it is believed to protect the wearer from negativity. Sardonyx was the stone in the old Roman calendar – a variety of onyx with red bands of sand. The stone was said to enhance outage and so was worn by soldiers in ancient Rome. Zircon - transparent stone of various colours often used as a diamond substitute, is the birthstone in the Hindu calendar. It is believed to bring prosperity and peace of mind. Before the Zircon was identified, the moonstone was the September birthstone in the ancient Hindu calendar. Composed of alternate layers of orthoclase and albite which creates a glowing “from within” look, said to relieve anxiety for the wearer.

Hermannsburg Happenings IT was a rainy and wet 14 September evening. The forest creatures had gone in search of their honey, which was nowhere to be found. Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg Primary School put on its biennial stage production, this year titled Where is the Honey? The evening was a huge success and the many supporters of the evening were delightfully entertained by the whole cast - from the choir (which sang classics song like Sing a Song of Sixpence and a remake of the Abba classic Honey, Honey, Honey, and the bees and their allies, to the predators with their gangster outfits and attitudes to match. Congratulations to the primary school pupils for their hard work, and to their teachers and parents who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. The success of the primary school play was followed the next evening, when the Grade 12 pupils presented their matric orals to the Grade 11s and their parents and teachers. Once again the examiners were impressed by the quality of the presentations, on a diverse range of interesting topics, with appropriate Powerpoint visuals augmenting the polished deliveries. The week was

rounded off with the annual speech and drama festival where the external adjudicators again praised our pupils’ performances. Our primary school athletes went up against the teams from Wartburg, Pelham, Gert Maritz and Greytown last week, where Julian Königkrämer was named U10 champion for his achievements on the day. Some of the results - first places were taken by Julian Königkrämer (100m), Luyanda Gumede (javelin), Jessica Vroegop (high jump) and Matthew du Preez (high jump). Second places were achieved by Siena Kimble (100m), Benjamin Rabe (javelin), Julian Königkrämer (high jump) and Rachel Bourne (high jump). Well done to all our primary school athletes and their coaches. We look forward to the Supper Theatre on Thursday, 22 September in our church hall, and to the Hermannsburg Golf Day on Friday and Saturday, 23 and 24 September at St Cathryn’s Golf Estate, where we continue to celebrate 160 years of HMB. THANK you to each and every parent, pupil and staff member for your support at this year's Duck Derby. Additional thanks are extended to Michael Yeadon for being our MC for the evening, all the parents who worked at the various phase food stalls, and to our sponsors - without you this event would not have been possible. Plant a tree for the future ALTHOUGH the first Arbor Day took place well over 100 years ago in 1872 in the U.S. South Africa first celebrated the day only in September 1983 and millions of trees have been planted throughout the world since then. The day came about when tree lover, a Mr J. Sterling Morton, went to live on the treeless plains of Nebraska. He persuaded the local agricultural board to set aside a day for planting trees and as editor of Nebraska's first newspaper, encouraged participation in the event by publishing articles on the value of trees for soil protection, fruit, shade and building. Mr Morton's home, known as Arbor Lodge, was testament to his love of trees and so inspired the name of the holiday Arbor Day. In South Africa, the first Arbor Day captured the imagination of people who recognised the need for raising awareness of the value of trees in our society. As sources of building material, food, medicine, and simple scenic beauty, trees play a vital role in the health and the well-being of communities. Collective enthusiasm for the importance of this issue in South Africa inspired the national government, in 1999, to extend the celebration of Arbor Day to National Arbor Week. From 1 to 7 September every year, schools, businesses and organisations are encouraged to participate in community "greening" events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment and
propose a green future for South Africa. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as the custodian of forestry in South Africa, highlights two specific trees (one common and one rare species) every year during Arbor Week to help increase public awareness of the 2000 indigenous tree species in South Africa. The 2016 common tree is Ficus thonningii, also known as Common wild fig (English); Gewone wildevy (Afrikaans.); Umbombe (Zulu.), Uthombe (Xhosa). The rare tree is M. angolensis, also known as the Bead Bean tree, Umgodithi or Knoppiesboonjhieboom, and is a semideciduous to deciduous tree of about 15m with a spreading, untidy canopy, grooved and grey-brown bark in older trees and is smooth and grey young branches Ficus thonningii is extensively used in African ethno medicine for treating a number of disease conditions, including diarrhoea, urinary tract infections, diabetes mellitus, gonorrhoea, respiratory infections and mental illnesses. The powdered leaves of the Bead Bean tree are used as a fish poison and to treat anorexia and asthenia, while bark extracts and pulped leaves are used to promote the healing of wounds. Decoctions of the leaves are given to children suffering jaundice, and to treat rheumatism, stomach ache, epilepsy and diarrhoea, while decoctions of the bark are used to treat malaria and as an aphrodisiac.
What to plant in spring HERE is a proven list of popular vegetables that can be sown in the garden or in pots in from mid-August to the end of October. Salad vegetables Tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, sprouts, radish. For lettuce choose a spot that gets afternoon shade or dappled sunshine because full sun in summer is too hot and the lettuce will quickly go to seed. Vegetables for small gardens Spinach, beetroot, lettuce, bush beans, eggplant, chillies, summer cabbage and leeks. All these are compact growing vegetables and HARIDHAYAL veggies like lettuce, JANTHIELAYAL beetroot and spinach can be used as (EX POSTMAN) borders. Chillies also make beautiful pot plants. Vegetables in pots Tomatoes can be a bit overwhelming

for a garden bed but you can plant a tomato bush in a large pot (about 20 litre) and train it up a trellis or pyramid. To contain its growth pinch off the growing tips when it reaches the desired size Other runner plants like peas and beans can also be planted in pots and supported on a frame. Try chillies and eggplant in pots as well. Vegetables for large gardens If you are lucky enough to have plenty of space, grow the rambling types of vegetables like squash, patty pans, cucumber, and watermelon. Vegetable growing tips Like herbs, vegetables do best if grown in a sunny position. Prepare the beds by digging them over well and mixing in compost. Growing vegetables from seed is cheaper than buying seedlings. Keep the soil moist during germination and thin out the seedlings when they are big enough to handle. For a good crop fertilise with a balanced organic fertiliser two weeks after germination and at monthly intervals after that.
Vegetables you can grow in summer include beetroot, broccoli, chilli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, eggplant, green pepper, leeks, lettuce, melon, onion and parsley.

Safety of children when driving PARENTS play a vital role in ensuring their children are safe while in a vehicle The use of a child car seat for all children under the age of three was made compulsory from 1 May, 2015. While it is law to use child car seats for children under the age of three, this does not mean that adults should ignore the need to restrain older children. Make sure they are restrained appropriately. ER24 offers the following advice in regard to the proper safety restraints: • Infants should ride rear-facing at least until they are a year old.
• Once they exceed the weight or height limit set by the manufacturer of the infant safety seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible safety seat. It is best to keep toddlers rear-facing as long as possible. • When they have outgrown this seat, they should use a forwardfacing safety seat with a full harness. This should be used until they exceed the weight and/or height limit set by the manufacturer of the seat. • Children who have outgrown a convertible safety seat should use a booster seat until they are at least four feet.
Suicide prevention SUICIDE is a major problem in South African, but it is a problem that can be overcome – not by the single individual considering suicide, but by a concerted effort between that person, their friends and family, and their community as a whole. This was highlighted on World Suicide Prevention Day on
Friday 9 September. There are 23 completed suicides in South Africa every day, for every suicide, there are 20 attempted suicide. Suicide is still very under-reported. To join chats, such as Sadag’s Facebook page go to The South African Depression and Anxiety Group or go to www.sadag.org
Another public holiday for SA YET another public holiday for South Africans has been declared. President Zuma announced on Monday that Monday 27 December would be a public holiday. This is as a result of a request from the Federation of Unions of South Africa which complained
that workers would only have 11 public holidays, instead of 12, as Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. Usually when a public holiday falls on a Sunday the following Monday would be a public holiday. The Monday after Christmas, is however another public holiday,
• Children who are tall enough to wear an adult seat belt should still ride in the back seat until they are 13 years old. Adjust the seat belt so the lap belt crosses the child's upper thighs and the diagonal belt crosses the upper chest at a point between the neck and shoulder. Also remember, it is vital that you make use of a seat belt as well. Failure to do so could result in you being fined or, in the case of a collision, you possibly sustaining critical or fatal injuries.

Puppy love WELL-KNOWN Greytown dog trainer Brenda Munitich will be writing a series of articles all about dogs and how to turn them into good citizens. This week is about acquiring a puppy: "Before you buy a puppy consult all the members of your family. Consider the function that the dog will be expected to fulfill. • Do you want a purebred or a mongrel bearing in mind that many purebreds are developed for a specific purpose e.g the Border Collie is primarily a stock dog, the Labrador a hunting dog. • Will you have enough time to train and exercise your puppy and are you prepared to put up with 'accidents' that need cleaning up? • Have you considered the costs involved in feeding, housing, grooming and veteri-

nary costs? • Can you provide a safe place and proper shelter for your puppy while the family are out? • Have you considered that the “cute, fluffy puppy” you choose will grow quickly into an adult and be with you for 10 or more years. • Before you buy a purebred have you taken time to talk to the breeders and observe the breed of your choice at training or in a house setting. Ask to see the parents. • Do you want a bitch or a dog? It matters little whether you choose a dog or a bitch, although a spayed bitch is probably better suited to most urban homes. In any event you should have your dog spayed or neutered at about six months of age. Next week: Fetching your puppy.

Greytown Country Club news SPRING treatment started on Monday 19 September, the course is now closed until Monday 3 October. Thank you for your cooperation during this time. Pieter Rossouw lost out on the money as he was not present at the time of the draw. The next attendance draw will be on Friday with R700 up for grabs. Be here from 6.30pm and you could be the lucky winner. Robin Furniss won the brandy from the lucky draw that also took place on Friday. The Cook-Off competition on Saturday
was very well supported. Thank you to all the seven teams that entered and who enthusiastically lit their fires. The aromas in the air made it unbearable to wait for the judges to finalise the results. The competition was very close and the judges had a hard time deciding. The food was of a very high standard, but unfortunately, we could only have one winner. Team “Spit braai” took the prize and the “boozers” got the burnt pot award. Thank you to Wendy the Clown for keeping the children busy with face painting. Our judges did a sterling job. Thank you to Mike and Trish Barrow and Eve Drury for being available for this difficult job. Lastly, thank you to everybody that supported us in the cold and rainy weather.
