Lucky Supermarket destroyed by fire

HUNDREDS of thousands rand worth of stock was destroyed in a fire that swept through Lucky Supermarket in Durban Street in the early hours of Sunday morning. As the fire spread throughout the roof collapsed. The fire was initially reported by an Engen employee who spotted the flames from across the road and called it in just before 3 am. Umvoti Municipal Fire Brigade were quickly on the scene and called in the Greytown traffic officers to assist with traffic control. Firemen were able to stop

the fire from spreading to stock stored in buildings at the back, but it was not possible to save anything in the store itself. The fire brigade monitored the situation well into the afternoon as there were odd spates of flame throughout the burnt building. At the time of going to press the cause of the fire was unknown. It started after Greytown's first "Spring" storm earlier in the morning. A forensic team was due to visit the scene yesterday (Tuesday) to establish how the fire had started. The aftermath round about 9am on Sunday morning.

The Department of Water and Sanitation, contractors and their sub-contractors must be thanked for their diligent efforts, to get phase 2 completed in the nick of time. “This has allowed phase 1 to be

Print deadline delays Mayoral report YESTERDAY, Tuesday 23 August, the first Council meeting of the newly elected Umvoti Municipal Councillors took place in Greytown Town Hall. Unfortunately, due to printing-press deadlines and the fact that the meeting started half an hour late, the Greytown Gazette editor regrets that due to these time restraints, she was unable to cover the meeting full details will be published in next week's issue. Members of the public attended in full force - the hall was packed and a loudspeaker was erected for the crowd outside. Apart from an obvious show of many SAPS members, bodyguards and security firms, the meeting was attended by KZN VIPs, a number of Inkosi, the Greytown magistrate and more, and there were a number of reporters and photographers from various media outlets. In hopefully an indication of meetings to start on time in future, the 15-strong ANC majority were seated at 10.05am. Make sure you get the next issue of the Greytown Gazette to update on who will be the heading the Umvoti Council for the next five years.

Water update IN response to a request from the Greytown Gazette for an update on the Greytown water supply, Greytown water activist Brian Walker responded as follows: “The Townlands emergency water intervention (phase 2) is now up and running, delivering 1.7 million litres per 24 hours, which allows the reticulation system to be opened from 5am to 9am

Nquthu councillors threatened NQUTHU IFP councillors had to be moved to a hotel for safety after they received threatening calls prior to council's inaugural meeting. Nquthu, one of the four municipalities making up Umzinyathi District Municipality with Umvoti, Msinga and Endudemi, was the only municipality in South Africa in which National Freedom Party candidates could stand. Previously it had been governed by a coalition of NFP and ANC councillors. In the 3 August elections the IFP won 15 seats, ANC 14 and

the DA and EFF, which won one each, indicated they would support the IFP. Adding to the tension IFP and the DA councillors received SMSes, allegedly from Cogta, requesting the cancellation of the inaugural meeting, but Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube Ngcobe said if the inaugural meetings are not convened in time she would have no choice, but to declare such municipalities dysfunctional. At the time of going to press, Tuesday 23rd, the Nquthu inaugural meeting was due to be held.

Expeditionists’ tackle harrowing challenge

Page 3

Teen rapist sentenced to life A 46-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to life in the Greytown Regional Magistrate’s Court for the rape of a teenager in Kranskop on 22 July. According to evidence, the 14-year-old girl was asleep on a bed in the kitchen, while the accused Sipho Manda and some of the teenager’s cousins were there drinking alcohol. When the cousins left, the accused remained behind, attacked and raped the teenager. She screamed for help and her grandmother, who was in the house, rushed into the kitchen and saw the rape taking place.

Thommo Hart and Simphiwe Ngcobo THE spirit of adventure is alive and well as seen in Greytown on Sunday when two runners, Thommo Hart and Simphiwe Ngcobo, ran into town from their Saturday start of the John Ross Challenge in Pietermaritzburg on an 1 800km run to Maputo, and back. Thommo, who founded the “Expeditionists”, will run the entire route barefoot, which will result in the world record for the longest journey across land, barefoot. Expeditionists “live life as an adventure and view the journey as the destination”, and is all about giving back. For more information on their exploration and adventure community movement visit expeditionists.org This expedition has the same purpose as John Ross had nearly 200 years ago when he undertook his journey to get medical supplies and treatment for sick members of his

ship’s crew. Thommo is fund-raising for a lifesaving mobile cancer testing and treatment minivan for KZN rural areas through Pink Drive. Simphiwe is raising funds for a community centre for physically and mentally challenged children. Thommo is a passionate anthropologist, adventurer, and lover of Africa. He founded the Expeditionists on the death of his mother from cancer and created the John Ross Challenge as a means to fight cancer. Simphiwe is a filmmaker with a passion for running and a great storyteller who hopes, through this challenge, to make a difference to the lives of 20 children and inspire a new generation of adventurers. There are a number of sponsorship packages available, check the website or phone 033 346 0557 or email info@expedition ists.org

Craigieburn pipeline, still a dream AT the water meeting called by Umzinyathi District Municipality last month, Umvoti mayor Thami Ngubane, in response to a query on progress of the Craigieburn pipeline, told the public that the three contractors, who had not done their jobs had been fired. Umzinyathi Municipal Manager Dr Thombela and the mayor assured the public that new contractors would be appointed on merit and not on political connections. It was also stated that the project was being

accelerated and would be monitored by the Department of Water and a technical task team However, the Greytown Gazette understands that the project is once again at a standstill with no work being undertaken on the pipeline. So the timeline given by water service provider Umzinyathi at the July meeting that the pipeline would be operating by September at the earliest, but more than likely December, again appears to be a pipe dream.

Greytown Museum Arts Fair FOLLOWING on the great success of the Greytown Museum Arts Fair held at the end of July, organisers Suzanne Foster Aherin and Kate Elges have announced that it will be an annual event. In response to requests that it be held regularly they told the Greytown Gazette: “We

both feel it would be better to keep the fair viable, exciting and fresh and to implement new ideas with each one, hence we believe that annually is the way to go.” Over 500 people attended the event and Greytown SPCA and the Greytown Museum, as well as the stallholders all benefitted.

The accused ran off, but was arrested that evening and pleaded guilty in court on 19 August. Captain Keshni Budloo, unit commander Greytown FCS thanked the investigating officer Constable Thaba Ndabandaba and the Regional Court public prosecutor Andile Ngiba for securing the well deserved life sentence. Captain Budloo said that this life sentence should send a clear message to the community that rape and crimes against women and children will not be tolerated and the penalties for such cases are severe.

Greytown Youth and Child Care Centre

Diana Lifka from Ulm, Germany, is doing volunteer work at the Greytown Youth and Child Care Centre for six months. Nineteenyear old Diana told the ‘Greytown Gazette’ that after she had completed her A level this year she decided to do volunteer work in South Africa and is very happy she chose to come here. ‘For me it’s a great experience and I want to contribute giving the children a beautiful home and new opportunities for their future.’

Emgaga Primary continues to shine ALTHOUGH a small school with limited resources and poor infrastructure, Emgaga Primary School teachers and pupils continue to make their mark in the academic and cultural fields. Situated in rural eThembisweni, the school this year won many trophies in the language festival as well as other academic competitions. Grade 6 pupil Xolelwa Msomi represented Umvoti CMC in the Spelling Bee contest in Dundee and went through to the final round on 18 August. Taking part in the cultural

competition at Lakhis sports field on 12 August Emgaga pupils achieved a first in Isicathamiya and praise poetry categories, and second in Afro Gospel. The teams now go through to the district competition in Dundee on 26 August. Window on Wembley WE are very proud of our Deanté Swart, who graced the front cover of this month’s MPSA magazine. A variety of well-known models and Miss SAs have accomplished this, but this is the first time a child has achieved this. On Friday, 12 August, the Grade 2 class finished their Olympic measurement lessons with various Olympic events such as pool-noodle javelin and big-lid discus. The distance of each throw was first estimated and then measured in metres. A marble eight lifting championship was held to see who could pick up and weigh the heavi-

est amount of marbles in grams with one handful. Our record was 250g. We also had torch relays and a basketball speed shoot to estimate how fast we could throw 100 paper balls into a bin. Fun was had by all. Congratulations to the senior primary for their excellent concert and the awareness it created. Admission to the concert was a bag of old clothes or toys, and we are thrilled with the amount of donations we received. Thank you to every pupil and parent who donated. All clothes and toys were donated to Letcee.

Soup and culture create a commotion

Coffee, not merely to drink DON’T ditch those used coffee grounds after brewing a special cup of the popular beverage. Get rid of the garlic smell from your hands: keep grounds in a dish near the kitchen sink and scrub them whenever you want to rid your hands of strong odours from fish, onion or garlic. Fertilise plants: enrich the soil of flower beds by working coffee grounds directly into the dirt. This practice works especially well for beds containing roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, evergreen, camellias and other acid-loving plants. Coffee grounds can actually create hyperblue hydrangeas. The grounds increase the acidity of the soil, which helps them absorb aluminum and creates the vibrant blooms. Repel insects To create a protective border around plants and shrubs, form small rings of coffee

grounds around the base. This will prevent unwanted critters like ants, slugs or snails from getting too close. Furthermore, sprinkle old grounds wherever you don't want bugs to appear. What to do with leftover coffee: make coffee ice cubes. Pour leftover coffee in ice cube trays, freeze and then add to home-made ice coffee for a full-flavoured cool coffee sipper. Freshen up your closets: coffee is a natural deodorising agent. Grind up coffee beans very fine, and place a few scoops into a cheesecloth sachet or reusable brew bag. Hang these easy-to-make sachets in a closet to clear up musty smells - just dangle from a hanger for a day or two. Other places worthy of these deodorising pouches include stinky shoes, the refrigerator and the car. - Today Everyday Solutions.

All the money raised will help to buy new, exciting books for the library. "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr Seuss.

Hermannsburg Happenings

At the fine motor skills workshop in New Hanover (from left) Angelique van Rooyen (primary school), Stephanie Redinger (presenter) and Annette Gathmann (Kindergarten). BEFORE the start of the recent long weekend, our Grade 10 and Grade 12 pupils completed their respective written portions of the Deutsche Sprachdiplom (German Language Diploma), in which all our high-school pupils strive to achieve. This sought-after, internationally recognised language qualification has written and oral components, with the oral component due to be completed over the next month. We wish them every success in their efforts to succeed as the Grade 10s complete the first level (DSD I), and the Grade 12s the second and final level (DSD II). Our

Grade 12s start trial examinations next week, and are hard at work preparing for this important part of their matric year. We trust all their hard work through the years, and especially leading up to these examinations, will pay off, and that they will once again do themselves proud. In sports news, our soccer teams took to the field last week against Wartburg, with our boys drawing 0-0 and the girls ending their match 0-2. We look forward to the results of the Quandrangular Athletics meeting and the Co-Ed Athletics meeting, both of which take place this week. However, not only have our pupils been busy, Mrs Van Rooyen and Ms Gathmann attended a fine motor skills workshop for pre-primary and Grade 1 teachers, hosted by New Hanover Preparatory School and presented by occupational therapist Stephanie Redinger. Various important skills, including pencil skills (scribbling, colouring, drawing, writing), scissor skills (cutting), construction skills (with Lego and Duplo) and self-care skills (tying shoelaces, opening lunch boxes) were covered. Without the ability to complete these everyday tasks well, a child’s self-esteem and academic performance are often compromised, and the child may also experience difficulties with developing independent life skills (like getting dressed). A big thank you to New Hanover Preparatory School for hosting the workshop and to Mrs Redinger for providing the opportunity for our teachers to expand their knowledge and skills in such an important aspect of our children’s development.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle ROAD safety has become an important part of educating our pupils because it helps them learn to be more aware and equips them with basic safety knowledge and a practical understanding of the rules of the

road. On traffic day the Little Oaks brought their bikes, scooters and tricycles to school to learn about the basics of road safety without having to be among real cars on real streets.

Their teachers explained the important aspects of street safety and there were lots of riding opportunities around our campus where the Little Oaks could show off their riding and safety skills. The Little Oaks practice their riding skills and road rules in the car park at Hermanns burg, which was reserved for their use for the day.

Little Oaks’ at the Kindergarten, ready to tackle the course their teachers had set out for them.

Healthy and versatile tomatoes It is tomato season – supermarkets, stores and street vendors are selling lots of them at remarkably reasonable prices. Some historical facts about this favourite fruit: •Tomatoes originated in the South American Andes around the area of modern day Peru and was first used as a food by the Aztecs in Southern Mexico. •Because the tomato has seeds and grows from a flowering plant botanically it is classed as a fruit, not a vegetable. •In 1887 America tariff laws imposed a duty on vegetables, but not on fruits. This meant the status of tomatoes become a matter of legal importance. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Nix v. Hedden that tomatoes were to be considered vegetables, based on the popular definition that classifies vegetables by use, where they are usually served with dinner and not as a dessert. However, the courts did not reclassify the tomato botanically, it is still a fruit. •China is the largest producer of tomatoes, accounting for one quarter of the world’s production - United States and India and the second and third highest producers respectively. •Most tomato varieties are red although other colours are possible including green, yellow, orange, pink, black, brown, white, and purple. There are more than 7 500 tomato varieties grown around the world. •Types of tomatoes include slicing (globe) tomatoes used in processing and fresh eating. Beefsteak tomatoes are large, often used for sandwiches. Oxheart tomatoes vary in size and are shaped like large strawberries. Plum tomatoes (including pear tomatoes), are usually oblong, and used in tomato sauce and paste. Cherry tomatoes are small round, often sweet and eaten whole in salads. Campari tomatoes are sweet and juicy of small to medium size. •Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that is good for the heart and effective against certain cancers. Cooked tomatoes are actually better than raw ones, as more benefi-

Tomatoes are also packed with vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium. One serving of red, ripe, raw tomatoes (one cup or 150 grams) is a good source of Vitamins A, C, K, folate and potassium. Tomatoes are naturally low in sodium, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. Tomatoes also provide thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus and copper, all of which are necessary for good health. One serving of tomatoes gives two grams of fiber, which is seven percent of the daily recommended amount. Tomatoes also have a relatively high water content, which makes them a filling food. •The biggest tomato fight in the world happens each year in the small Spanish town of Buñol. The festival called La Tomatina, involves some 40 000 people throwing 150 000 tomatoes at each other. •The Guinness World Record for most tomatoes harvested from a single plant over one year weighed 522.464kg with 32 194 tomatoes harvested between May 2005 and April 2006. The tomato plant was at the Epcot Science project at Walt Disney World Company, Florida, U.S. •As of 2013, the heaviest tomato according to Guinness World Record weighed 3.51kg and was grown in 1986, in Oklahoma, U.S.

IT was good to see our ladies golf captain, Liekie, practicing this weekend, chipping and putting, stretching and running as she prepares for the ladies regional round of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge. Good luck Liekie and enjoy the competition on Sunday. The golf course recorded 15mm of rain on Saturday night and hopefully the light verti-cutting and spike rolling will start turning the brown greens into lush, soft carpet-like greens ready for the Hermannsburg Golf Day on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 September. We have

not set a definite date for spring treatment - hollow-tining and sand dressing as we are watching the weather and are waiting for conditions to warm up. On Wednesday 7 September we will be holding our ladies invitational from 9am. To enter, contact Liekie on 082 820 0615. This Friday the clubhouse will be closed for a private function.
