Inspection of the parade by Umvoti Mayor and Air Force.
A LARGE crowd lining the streets of Greytown enjoyed the formality of the traditional ceremony held last Saturday. Umvoti Mounted Rifles exercised its Freedom of Entry to Greytown, which was granted to them in 1954 while Air Force Base Durban and 15 Squadron were granted the honour of Freedom of Entry to Greytown. There were many highlights the stirring music of the band, the lighting of the flame of armour, general salute, inspection of the parade, the uncasing of the 15 Squadron colours. The many who had waited along the route enjoyed the parade, which included mounted and mecha-
nised columns, and the SAAF fly past. After the proceedings, Mr Oscar Zondi reports that at a function hosted by Umvoti Mayor, Thami Ngubane in the town hall, families of Umkhonto weSizwe from Enhalalakahle were also honoured as was Mr Milton Chonco for his role during the transitional period. Among those present were Inkosi Bafana Zondi, Inkosi Dlomo, Umvoti chief magistrate, Mr Jabulani Masikane, SAPS station commander LieutenantColonel Mchunu, chief of the Airforce Lieutenant-General Msimang and Major General Mbambo Chief of Airforce Operations.

Armed robbery in Pine Street AS staff were preparing to close for the day, and six customers were doing last-minute shopping at Exact in Pine Street, four robbers struck just before 5pm last Friday. At first, when the two men walked in, the staff thought they were customers - but two were armed and another two came in and closed the door. According to witnesses, the robbers said they were professionals and needed to make money to feed their families. They said they just wanted the cellphones and cash and warned all not to hit the panic button. The robbers cable-tied the staff and customers and forced the manageress to take them into the store where cellphones and cash were kept. Taking these and the cash the robbers then left, shutting the front door. No information is available at this stage as to whether the gang had a getaway vehicle or if they just walked away. A report that the gang were dressed in police uniforms could not be confirmed. The robbery was discovered and the captives released, when according to a police spokesman a staff member did not appear for her lift and the concerned driver contacted her on her cellphone, which despite having her hands tied, she managed to respond to. The Greytown SAPS were then alerted and the captives released. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Captain Nalesh Maharaj of Greytown SAPS on 033 413 9034.

Important dates in June MOTHERS had their day this month and fathers can line up to be spoilt (although not to the same extent) on their day. Father’s Day is on Sunday 19 June. Traditionally they do not get the same amount of media coverage and hype as mothers, but just a reminder in case you decided you would like to acknowledge with love what he has done for you over the years. Ramadam starts on 6 June (depending on the sighting of the new moon when members of the Muslim faith fast from sunrise to sunset. This month-long ceremony ends on 7 July. Youth Day falls on Thursday 16 June. Father’s Day messages will be published in the 15 June Greytown Gazett (usual deadlines). Ramadam messages and advertising will be in the 1 June issue.

Window on Wembley Well done to Nkosinathi Dlamini (right) for making the U13 boys' KZN Inland B, C and D squad and Leah Tedder for making the U13 girls' KZN Inland B, C and D squad. ALTHOUGH the weekend started out wet and cold there was no damper on the excitement in the air as the events proceeded as planned. This year's MTB introduced a new event - the night race- the challenge of which was met by a number of our pupils and they enjoyed the variation immensely. The PA would like to take this opportunity to thank each parent and pupil who either took part in, or assisted at the mountain bike festival. We would also like to thank our generous sponsors who continually support us and make events such as this possible. Grade 6 pupils departed from Wembley College at 7.45am. Our first stop was Fort Dunford, it was very educational and we loved learning about the Boere war. After that we went to Bunjy Toys and watched as the 10 staff members made toys. After the tour we were allowed to buy some toys. Our last tour was through the Glamosa Glass factory. This factory uses recycled glass to make light bulbs and many other glass products. When we finally arrived at White Mountain Resort we were greeted
by our guides, Mike and Toby. They were very encouraging and were an integral part of building the class's teamwork. We had many activities which varied from abseiling to Stalk the Lantern. We hiked up White Mountain, foofy slide through valleys and did icebreakers. We also had to make a bridge out of rope and sticks in one hour. The night activities were very exciting and the food was delicious. Tomas Evans continues to the second round of trials. Well done to him for making the second round for U14 boys' hockey inland trials. The U12 and U13 boys and girls, who represented Umzinyathi, travelled to PMB for the district tournament at St Johns and St Charles this past weekend. Having a training session on Friday and two full days of games on Saturday and Sunday, the players really had to dig deep to play their best. Well done to Nkosinathi for making the U13 boys' KZN Inland B, C and D squad and to Leah Tedder for making the U13 girls' KZN Inland B, C and D squad as a nonetravelling reserve. We are proud of the both of you, this is a really great achievement.
Hermannsburg Happenings SPIRITED flute solos, piano pieces, deep vocal solos and soulful duets, the six-strong “Bro-ties” male group and the Viva Voce girls’ choir were stunning opening acts from our school for the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Choir’s performance last Friday - our music department is clearly inspired. A packed church hall was enthralled by the new youth choir programme, and it was a privilege to see Gérard’d du Toit and Tristan Hiestermann back in Hermannsburg, conducting the choir and dedicating various pieces to members of the Hermannsburg family. Our primary school pupils attended the annual “Hooked on Books” presentation, kindly host-
25 May 2016 ed by Wembley College last week, where they saw stories come off the pages and brought to life - and even participated in the process. On the hockey front, our Grade 1 and 2 girls had a lovely friendly match against Greytown Junior on Thursday, while our highschool boys played fast, physical games against DSS - the U15 team
played well but ended 0-2 and the first team managed to hold on to win 2-1. The rugby teams played at Waterfall, where the Open team were up against Grace College (7-22) and Wartburg 2 (0-35), while the U16 team played Wartburg 1 (0-35), Grace College (28-12) and Wartburg 2 (12-5).
Hermannsburg’s Viva Voce girls’ choir entertained at last Friday’s choral evening in Hermannsburg. The ‘Broties’.
Junior Jottings ON 17 May the mini-hockey girls took part in a hockey festival at Wembley College. The girls enjoyed their games and played very well. Results: Grade 1: vs Mooi River B - won 4-0; vs Mooi River A - won - 2-0; vs New Hanover - lost 1-0. Grade 2: vs; Wartburg A - drew
1-1; vs Wartburg B - won 2-0; vs Wembley College - drew 0-0 On 18 May U13 hockey girls travelled to Domino Servite. The game was tough but they enjoyed it and played their best. The girls lost 2-0. U11 girls played with much enthusiasm unfortunately, they lost 3-0. On 19 May a Grade 1 and 2 team travelled to Hermannsburg to participate in a friendly hockey
game. The girls played well and enjoyed the games. Results: vs Hermannsburg 1 - won 1-0; vs Hermannsburg 2 - won 1-0. On Thursday 19 May the Grade 1 and 2 mini-rugby boys played two games. New Hanover Prep School news THE second term is always busy on the sports field and the past two weekends have seen some exciting sport festivals hosted at New Hanover Prep. The school hosted a tag-rugby festival, which is always a highlight for the boys as well as our annual U13 girls’ day-night hockey festival. The latter event saw 17 schools participating, five of which stayed over for the night. The girls had a fun-filled afternoon of hockey as well as dancing and cheering alongside the hockey field. The children sang songs then the moms made bath salts with their children, were treated to manicures, and explored the wonderful NHPP playground.

which has a youth-friendly services charter where they advised the youth to discipline themselves about drugs, teenage pregnancy, unsafe sexual intercourse and the importance of circumcision. Pupils learnt from all the information and the team promised to provide more services. The previous Monday a team from KwaSizabantu in Kranskop came and delivered a touching speech about the behaviour of a drug user and the consequences of using drugs. Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative attitude or behaviour into a positive one. - Media committee.
Hermannsburg Llittle Oaks’ Oracle ONE of our three new pilot projects in the Kindergarten is movement and language, which creates opportunities to expand each child’s linguistic and body language, as well as his or her repertoire of movement. Language and movement are very important for children in gaining knowledge and in expressing and communicating with each other and the world. The main focus on a movement-orientated language activity should be a stimulating environment, where the child can actively and simultaneously use body, movement, language and voice to get in contact with other children. If a child performs slow or fast movements, for example, it will learn the terms “slow” and “fast” and will also be able to describe and articulate slow and fast movements. These activities awake the curiosity of the child and encourage the investigation of verbal expression; the child learns to act, but also to use words meaningfully.
Indlovana School news LAST week was busy, but exciting for Indlovana Primary School as the school said farewell to seven staff members and hosted this year’s Youth Language Festival. On Tuesday 17 May school personnel hosted the farewell function for Mrs Z.P. Ngcobo, Ms T.C. Ndlovu, Ms Z.C. Shangase, Mrs B.E. Xaba, Mrs E. Khumalo, Ms N.P. Khumalo and school cook, Ms M. Zondi who were thanked by the principal, Mrs Mngadi, for their contribution to the school. The function was honoured by the presence of the school’s retired principal, Mr M.P. Ndlovu. Indlovana pupils did well in the Youth Language Festival last week coming third in English story telling and drama and first in group musical poetry – this group will represent Umvoti CMC in a district competition in June. The principal and school governing body invite parents to a meeting on Sunday 29 May at 8.30am, where parents can view their children’s schoolwork. - H.W. Xulu.

Bad driving, not evil spirits Sir, OUR roads claim many lives and our road mortality rate is one of the highest in the world. The recent taxi accident claimed five lives and others injured. This creates great pain and hardship to the families and loved ones and all of us are affected by it. Ernest Hemingway wrote "every person's death diminishes me for I am involved with mankind". What drew my attention was the report in the Greytown Gazette 18 May "Mayor leads mass prayer meeting", which stated "the message and purpose of the prayer was to pray to God to chase away evil spirits that may cause accidents and claims the lives of so many every day on the road". Freedom and democracy are progressive forces. Leadership requires that our thoughts are directed toward scientific thinking and not superstition. Many of our people are the victims of superstition because they cannot find answers to their problems and become an easy prey to quacks and con men. We should direct our motorists to observe the rules of the road, keep within speed limits, have roadworthy vehicles and all the factors that make our roads safe. The encouragement of superstition will give licence to bad, negligent and criminal drivers to plead in our courts that their actions were as a result of "evil”, these will be used as grounds for mitigation of sentence or discharge. Dog attacks protect yourself THERE have recently been reports of attacks by dogs on people and ER24 is urging pet owners to take good care of their dogs by ensuring they are well socialised and trained from a young age, and kept safe in their property. ER24 is also urging people to avoid approaching unfamiliar dogs and to report stray dogs to the relevant authorities.Children should also be educated about how to act around and take care of their dogs. According to Samantha Walpole, secretary of Animal Behavioural Consultants of South Africa, children are
the most at risk of being bitten by dogs. “Children are generally drawn to dogs. Wagging tails are attractive to children. Unfortunately, the public is ill informed that if a dog’s tail is wagging, it means that it is happy and is safe to approach. This is far from the truth. Children are also taught that hugging and kissing is an acceptable form of affection. To humans it is, but to canines this is perceived as confrontational. “Fundamentally, humans and dogs speak a different language. When communication is misunderstood,
people get bitten,” said Walpole, also a dog behaviourist and trainer. Walpole said dogs that bite their owners, or anyone, could have an underlying medical condition. The dog could also be pushed to a point where it has no choice or could feel threatened. Harsh and confrontational training methods could also be a contributing factor. Walpole said that people should purchase dogs from reputable breeders. “If you want to purchase a puppy, do your homework to match the right breed with your lifestyle.” Further tips: • Research and learn how to “speak dog”. There are a number of body signals that a dog displays to indicate that it is uncomfortable. Bids are hereby invited in terms of section 18(a) of the Msinga Municipality’s Supply Chain Management Policy • Learn what your dog likes and dislikes together with section 83 of the Municipal Systems Act, No.32 of 2000, as amended and read together with and respect these sections 110,111 and 112 of the Municipal Finance Management Act No.56 of 2003 for: needs. • Do not poke, push THE CONSTRUCTION OF EZINGQUNGENI ROAD: or sit on a dog or pull TENDER NO CIDB GRADING EVALUATION DOCUMENTS AVAIL- DATE AND TIME BID DOCUMENT CLOSING DATE AND its tail. Ripen an avo in 10 minutes THERE is nothing worse than buying a bag of one of nature's most gorgeous fruits - and then having to wait for a week for them to ripen. Then they ripen all at the same time and you have to throw some away (or eat them non-stop for three days). Here's a trick (we promise it works) to ripen an avo in 10 minutes: • Preheat your oven to 90°C. • Wrap your avocado in tin foil (cover it completely so no air gets in) • Line a baking try with wax (ovenproof) paper • Place the avocado on the baking tray • Place in oven for 10 minutes • Let avo cool (or cool in fridge if you can't wait) The heat speeds up the process of ripening, but doesn't cook the avo. Editor’s note: Published by “Today’s Food” - have not personally tried it. Economical potato and guacamole dish Ingredients baby potatoes 2 avocados 1 onion, finely sliced 5 garlic cloves, minced 1 lemon sea salt and pepper Method
• Preheat oven to 180°C. • Put potatoes in a pot of cold water. Bring to a boil, add a teaspoon of sea salt to the water, and cook until tender. You want your potatoes to be tender enough to be able to mash down a bit on a baking tray with a fork or your hand, but not so tender that they will break apart into multiple pieces. Once your potatoes reach the right point of tenderness, drain well. • Place potatoes on a baking tray. Toss with about 3 cloves of minced garlic and cooking oil. Then, use a fork, the palm of your hand, or a potato masher to flatten potatoes but try to keep them in one piece , • Season flattened potatoes with sea salt and pepper, and bake in oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until crispy and slightly browned. • While potatoes are in the oven, combine the flesh of two avocados with remaining minced garlic (about 3 cloves), onion, and freshly squeezed juice of half a lime. Gently mash with a fork until you reach desired consistency for guacamole - add sea salt as you go, to taste. • To serve, combine potatoes and a large dollop of guacamole on a plate. - Dr Ben Kim.

FARMERS’ Agri-Care, our sponsor for the monthly mug, would have been proud of the larger than normal turnout for Saturday’s mug. Golfers came from Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Greytown and there were our faithful locals. Perfect golfing weather greeted the golfers. Greens are starting to speed up and were 11.49 on the stimpmeter. The fairways give those extra metres in your drive off the tee box, and golfers are looking for those extra metres. Two golfers in the field, who would like to remain anonymous,
forgot to sign their card when handed in, and lost a severe bet against their younger partners in their four-ball. Although these two golfers let’s call them “Ballie” and the “Dad Bruv” (not their real names) took the punishment when they realised their fault. Should they have checked their cards and signed them as correct they would have noticed that in fact they didn’t lose the bet, but due to the two-stroke penalty they were given, as it was a stroke play competition. Their punishment - a serious concoction they had to drink.

THE Greytown Gazette publishes a Shadow Column at the end of every month to list events to come throughout the year. The objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place, or about to, in order to avoid, as far as possible, “double dating” - that is two events on the same day which could create problems not only for the organisers, but also for the public. An appeal therefore goes out to schools, churches, NGOs, sports bodies, clubs, etc., to submit dates and event details to the Greytown Gazette for publication as soon as
possible. Its so easy - just email greytowngazette@gmail or phone 033 413 2310. TONY Smith and Chris and Erika Fischer played in the Niba trips last Sunday. They lost two, but won the third and kept the Greytown flag flying high.
Jordan Bonorchis had the edge over Wolfie Lubowitski in the singles championships and is through to the finals. Herbert Balzer is still to play Wessel Pretorius, and the winner will
play Chris Fischer. Big news is the Pannar fun day on Sunday 29 May at 8.30am for 9am. Entry is R60 per bowler, which includes lunch and tea and two games of bowls.
