VIPS relax at JG Zuma Marathon
Dignitaries at the JG Zuma Marathon on 17 April at King Edward Park (from left) president of Athletics South Africa, Aleck Skhosana, Mayor of Umgungundlovu District Municipality, Cllr Yusuf Bhamjee, Deputy Mayor of uMshwathi Local Municipality, Cllr Siphindile Zondi, KZN MEC for Education, Peggy Nkonyeni, Deputy Mayor of uMzinyathi District Municipality, Cllr Naniwe Madonsela and Mayor of Umvoti Municipality, Thami Ngubane.
Pipeline remains pipe dream TWO weeks ago the Greytown Gazette published photographs of non-operative Craigieburn pipeline showing trenches filled with weeds, hundreds of metres of pipes lying around and no signs of activity in any shape or form whatsoever. Umzinyathi District Municipality was requested by the Editor to supply information as to why the Craigieburn pipeline had ground to a halt and what this meant in terms of the assurances given to residents by Umzinyathi and the department that the pipeline would be completed and operational by the end of May. The following reply was received: “Umzinyathi District Municipality awarded various
contracts for implementation of the Greytown Water Scheme. The bulk of the scheme includes the supply of raw water from Craigieburn Dam to the Greytown Water Treatment works. “The Greytown Bulk Water scheme is still on, however, there are some operational and contractual challenges that Umzinyathi district is currently attending to with another service provider with the aim of ensuring that there is eventually a smooth flow of the project in question.” The Greytown Gazette felt this reply did not give any answers and once again requested information on the timeline for the completion
of this vital source of water, what are the operational and contractual challenges referred to by Umzinyathi and whether the millions of rands given by the Department to Umzinyathi to fast forward this project had been applied. Costs of this project have soared - from the original quote in 2008 of R290 million to the latest figure of over R500 million, which does not include the additional R6,5 million made available by the Department to Umzinyathi to fast forward the completion from September this year to (believe it or not) May 2016, Lake Merthley is 17.09% full and going into winter there is very little chance of rain. Water is life - every drop counts.

Waste transfer station clean up Before waste transfer station.

A free interchange of matters of public interest will be en couraged but we are not held responsible as endorsing the opinions of our correspondents.
IN January Umvoti Mayor Cllr T.C. Ngubane, made a commitment to Enhlalakahle residents regarding the cleaning up of the waste transfer station above Longhomes. Residents had been complaining about the transfer station, which had become an assault on eyes and noses as well posing a huge risk to hygiene. The community services department swung into action and
the waste management unit and Khabokedi (Youth Jobs in Waste) components began a massive clean-up operation which lasted several weeks. The technical services department assisted with gravelling and levelling the site. They are also in the process of renovating the staff change-rooms and installing electricity. Despite being hampered by adverse weather conditions the
hard work paid off and the transfer station now has a new look. Residents are urged to follow the direction of staff when dumping in order to avoid refuse being scattered across the site. Complaints about illegal dumping can be directed to the Community Services Department on 033 413 9138 and after hours 911 Community for Law and Order on 033 417 2911.
Farm market at Beehive on Saturday THE Greytown Child and Youth Care Centre is hosting a fun farm market this Saturday, 30 April with lots of activities. The venue is the Beehive and the market will open at 7am and close at 2pm. As it is a long weekend, a visit to the market will be ideal entertainment for young and older visitors. Activities for the youngsters include boere sport, sack racing, tug of war, egg racing, jumping castle, and more. As a farm market there will be tasty home-made food and hand-crafted items including, vetkoek, ice cream, yoghurts, wors rolls, toys, rag dolls,
plants, wood laser items, and more. Pieter Swanepoel of Greytown Youth and Child Care Centre in appealing to the community to support this initiative and local businesses. "We are planning this to be a twomonthly event where people of Greytown get together and trade their products, therefore we are asking business people to contact us and book stalls." There is also an exciting competition to be held on the day. A large rooster has been donated - buy a ticket and guess the weight and the winner will walk away with it.
No sea breeze for opposition party Sir, I REFER to your article "We do like to be beside the seaside" in last week’s Greytown Gazette. On receipt of the invite to this "bash" I immediately wrote to the municipal manager and indicated that the DA would have no part in this wasteful expenditure, and pointed out that these scarce resources could be much better utilised for the benefit of our community.
The DA has always advocated that workshops should be held in Greytown in council chambers or the town hall, at no cost to our residents. This wasteful expenditure once again goes to show that this ANC-led council has no regard for our residents and as I have previously stated, "you get what you vote for”. Cllr P. Buss
Robson family says thank you Win this rooster. For more information, contact Sue Bornman on 072 827 2483 or Pieter on 033 413 2133. - Ayanda Mabaso.
Sir, WE were very surprised, humbled and appreciative of the featured article in the Greytown Gazette of 13 April commemorating our 50th wedding anniversary. We would like to thank Greytonians for the many well wishes on our golden wedding anniversary and request that in lieu of any future gifts, please rather support our son's efforts to raise funds for the
Pink Drive (mobile breast cancer clinics) through the Comrades Marathon charity initiative. To do so got to www.comrades.com and click on Race for Charity - type in “Clive Robson” in the search field and follow the prompts to make a donation. Robson family Greytown and beyond

27 April 2016
Why we celebrate Freedom Day FREEDOM Day on 27 April is the annual celebration of South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections in 1994 marking the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new Constitution. The holding of the first non-racial elections was the culmination of years of struggle and a negotiated settlement which led to liberation organisations being unbanned, political prisoners re-
leased, the return of exiles and all party negotiations to draft an interim Constitution. This change in South African history came after long, tense negotiations 1991 and 1992 between South African government, the African National Congress, the South African Communist Party (SACP) and other liberation movements. South Africa’s first democratic national elections in 1994 election paved the way towards a new democratic dispensation and a new
Constitution for the country. Of South Africa’s 22,7 million eligible voters, 19.7 million voted in 1994. Although the ANC gained a majority vote, they formed the Government of National Unity, headed by ANC President Nelson Mandela, who became the first democratically elected president of South Africa. On the first anniversary Mandela said: “As dawn ushered in this day, the 27th of April, 1995, few of us could suppress the welling of emotion, as we were reminded of the terrible past from which we come as a nation; the great possibilities
Page 3 that we now have, and the bright future that beckons us. “Wherever South Africans are across the globe, our hearts beat as one, as we renew our common loyalty to our country and our commitment to its future. The birth of our South African nation has, like any other, passed through a long and often painful process. The ultimate goal of a better life has yet to be realised. On this day, you, the people, took your destiny into your own hands. You decided that nothing would prevent you from exercising your hard-won right to elect a government of your choice. Your

Talk on ‘secret life of butterflies’ next month
It was handfuls of dogs all around as owners took their pets to Lakhis and King Edward Park last Saturday for the free vaccination campaign run by Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services. Miss Maleka of the Deparment in Greytown said that the campaign had been successful with over 400 dogs vaccinated.
PMBGreytown road blockades FOR the past 10 days or so travel between Greytown and Pietermaritzburg has either been the normal straightforward trip or somewhat of a round-about to find an unblockaded road. Social media has proved its worth
with instant information on "Mpolweni is blocked”, “Copesville burning tyres”, “Table Mountain not open”, etc. If you have to travel through to Pietermaritzburg - taking children back to school, doctor's appoint-
ments and so on - please check that the roads are open before leaving. If not on WhatsApp - call Golf 911 on 033 417 2911 to check. Over the past couple of weeks other roads have also been blockaded - Appelbosch, Estcourt and Colenso - so it is advisable to check the route before leaving.
THE knee-jerk reaction of most gardeners, when they notice a fat caterpillar chewing contentedly at the leaves of their plants, is to reach for the insecticide spray bottle. Yet, given a chance to chew a few more leaves, that nasty caterpillar will metamorphose into a beautiful butterfly or moth. At the next Greytown Garden Club meeting on Tuesday 10 May at Greytown Lutheran Church in (Voortrekker Street), nationally recognised local lepidopterist, Kevin Cockburn, will present a fascinating introduction into the intriguing world of
butterflies and moths found in gardens. Having spent many years scouring the countryside observing the habitats and habits of these beautiful jewels of the air, their specific food preferences and their fascinating life cycles, Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his topic. The meeting begins at 9am with registration and the talk at 9.30am, after which tea will be served. A selection of informative and useful books, from butterfly and moth field identification guides to gardening for butterflies, will be available for purchase. Members are encouraged to bring a friend to introduce to the enriching experience of garden club.

patience, your discipline, your single-minded purposefulness have become a legend throughout the world.” Since 1994 South Africans have strived to correct the wrongs of the past. They are still faced with many challenges such as crime, poverty, unemployment, racism and sexism. Freedom Day gives South Africans the opportunity to make a pledge towards fighting against the legacy of racism and economic inequality as well as renewing their loyalty to the country and their commitment to its future. - SA History Online.
Umvoti Fire Protection Association appeal UMVOTI Fire Protection Association is appealing to the Umvoti community to be very aware of the dangers of fires with the start of the fire season on 1 June, compounded by the severity of the drought in the district. UFP personnel urge everyone to practice fire awareness, be vigilant
at all times and be extremely cautious when handling fire. Farmers who still have unburnt brushwood are encouraged to complete this operation as soon as possible in view of the approaching weather systems. There is a strong possibility that the burning of brushwood is to cease on 20 May, giving farmers sufficient time to mop up before the commencement of the fire season on 1 June. Please report all uncontrolled and control burning to Golf 911 on 033 417 2911.

Hermannsburg Happenings PROUD moms and dads looked on as Grade 1 and Grade 2 girls played their first hockey matches last Tuesday, even though we had some Grade 1 pupils playing in the Grade 2 division. They were very excited about playing and did well in their first encounters against Wembley B (0-0), Wembley A (0-4), Wartburg B (0-1), Greytown (0-4) and New Hanover (0-2). In the high school, our boys played hockey against Grace College and Jordan Pope scored three goals and Sven Klar one to secure the
4-2 win. The girls’ first team played Wembley (0-2), Greytown (0-1) and Domino Servite (0-0). Playing against Girls’ High, the U14 drew 0-0, the U16 lost 0-5 and the second team lost 0-6. The U13 team played at Treverton, against Treverton (0-0), Clifton (0-4) and Winterton (1-1), and although tired by back-toback games, the girls played well. The U16 rugby team is doing well, and won two of three games as they played against Wartburg 1 (7-14), Wartburg 2 (12-0) and
Grace College (38-0) on the weekend. Meanwhile, preparations for our 160th jubilee Schulfest are in full swing with many former pupils already booking into our school’s boarding establishment for a fun-filled weekend of camaraderie, food and trips down memory lane. We still have a few spaces available for crafters who want to book stalls for the Schulfest craft market, but these are filling up fast so contact the school urgently to secure your spot www.hermannsburg.co.za/ schulfest
Grade 7 pupils ready for business. GRADE 7 pupils at New Hanover Prep are taught business skills and marketing strategies during their economic management systems lessons and are given the opportunity to become active shareholders in a business of their choice, thus cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit while inspiring innovative ideas. They launched their first enterprise this week, dressed in colourful designer aprons and chef’s hats, selling “Wonka” Waffles. There were a variety of mouth-watering
toppings on offer including chocolate and ice cream, banana and ice cream as well as savoury and Banting options. Excited children stood in queues to grab their first waffle medley and were seen around the school relishing their tasty treats. We can’t take care of our children forever, so it’s important to teach them how to support themselves and take care of themselves. No matter what careers they end up in, they need that business savvy.
Window on Wembley BABANONGO Adventure Camp has opened up a sister adventure camp at Wagendrift Dam and we were the third school to make use of this new facility. This is the first time that the Form 1s have also had the opportunity to spend two nights away on their annual camp as the hockey tour is now taking place during the holidays. It was a real echo camp as all activities were outdoors - building rafts out of natural materials, night walk where we were informed about our galaxy, obstacle course, finding a list of items in nature and Survivorstyle challenges. We were fetched and brought back to the buses by motor boats, which was quite a unique way of starting and ending off our camp. It was a wonderfully crisp and clear Wednesday morning as the Grade 5 class departed for their camp at Umgeni Nature Valley Reserve. Upon arrival we were greeted by the camp facilitators and guides for the two -night stay. The focus of the majority of the activities was team work and environmental conservation and I believe pupils learnt a lot about how they impact the environment in a variety of ways. The second day of the camp was spent building ponds and rafts, being blindfolded and led into the reserve to create interesting nature poetry and driving and hiking to our next camp site, which was situated deep in the reserve at the bottom of a valley. Here pupils got to experience life without electricity and comfy mattresses. Congratulations to the following swimmers for achieving Level 1 times at the Midlands trials earlier this year:
Junior Jottings ON Thursday 14 April Greytown Junior hosted a series of mini-rugby practice games against Wembley College, accompanied by Mrs Billenge and Mr Stanzcyk. The Grade 1 boys played two games, results as follows: 1st game - 5-5. 2nd game - 0-0. The Grade 2 boys also played two games: 1st game - 0-0. 2nd game - 5-0, in Wembley’s favour. The afternoon was enjoyed by all. On Saturday 16 April the U13 boys travelled to Pietermaritzburg and participated in the annual Midlands tournament at Woodburn. Greytown Junior played four games against Cordwalles, Piet Retief, Pelham and Clarendon. Greytown lost two games, drew one and won one.
Milla Herbst: 50m freestyle (12th), 100m freestyle (11th), Louné Lötter: 50m bgreast stroke, 100m breast stroke (6th), Luke Porée: 50m freestyle (2nd) and Tayla Porée achieved a Level 2 time in 50m freestyle and was placed 3rd. Luke and Tayla Porée have been selected for the Midlands swimming team and will be participating in the KZN swimming trials on 7 May at the Kings Park pool in Durban. Well done to the following pupils for making the U12 and U13 Umzinyathi hockey team. They will represent Umzinyathi at the inter-district tournament on 14 and 15 May. U12 girls: Kayla Mcabe and Emma Martens;U13 Girls: Mayenzi Maphanga, Kristen Steyn, Leah Tedder, Sarah Barber, Amoré van Rooyen, Keren Chiazzari and Bridget Dede. U12 boys: Tim Gorzellok. Shadow column THE Greytown Gazette publishes a Shadow Column at the end of each month to list events to come throughout the year. The objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place, or about to, in order to avoid, as far as possible, “double dating” - that is, two events on the same day which could create problems not only for the organisers, but also for the public. An appeal therefore goes out to all schools, churches, NGOs, sports bodies, clubs, etc., to submit dates and event details to the Greytown Gazette for publication as soon as possible. Rooibos in the garden ROOIBOS is a fantastic natural fertiliser to use in the garden as it contains nutrients and trace minerals good to plant growth, states Margaret Roberts, a prominent figure in the world of natural health and gardening. “Instead of throwing away used rooibos tea leaves or bags, use them with other vegetable and fruit peelings to make a balanced compost mix.” Her herbal garden, considered one of the country’s top 10 gardens, is committed to organic farming with rooibos tea being among the critical compostable materials used. Rooibos tea leaves also enrich the soil by increasing the nitrogen level
and give earthworms something to munch on. Tanya Visser, gardening TV personality and editor of The GardenerDie Tuinier magazine and associated editor on the Grow to Eat magazine, feeds used rooibos tea bags to the worms in her worm farm. “You can also use tea bags for mulching your garden. So I actually buy the rooibos tea mulch for my garden,” says Visser. “I love the courser grain of it, the smell and feel of it is wonderful too and it keeps the goggas away from my plants.” Most gardeners prefer rooibos mulch to bark mulch, as it’s gentle on
the hands (you don’t even need to wear gloves) and since it’s easier to control the flow as it pours beautifully. After watering a few times, rooibos mulch forms a crusty layer on the soil. This layer reduces water loss through evaporation, is ideal for reducing stress on young transplants and contributes to considerable water saving in gardens and pot plants. It’s also ideal for fertilizing vegetable planters and looks beautiful between pavers and dainty flowers. Another of SA’s favourite gardeners, JJ van Rensburg is an equally big fan of rooibos. “One of the best-kept secrets is to break open steeped tea bags and to sprinkle the tea leaves around the plants to deter snails and other unwanted pests – it’s a very effective biological pest deterrent,” says FOR SALE FOR RENT Van Rensburg. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, (Palm Court) lounge, kitchen He says that conR4 500 pm excl R300 000 trary to the belief 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, that all tea makes lounge, kitchen (renovated) (Golden Acres) the soil acidic, rooiR4 750 pm excl R330 000 bos doesn’t. Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle TO stay fit and healthy we need to eat a balanced diet, which includes eating fruit every day. Fruits are important sources of many nutrients, including potassium, fibre, vitamin C and folate (folic acid) the Little Oaks learnt these and other interesting facts about fruit in
their groups last week. They also learnt that differently coloured fruits have different health benefits, so they cut up differently coloured fruit as they could to make colourful fruit sticks - and eating fresh fruit is even better for you than a glass of fruit juice.

160th Birthday celebrations for Hermannsburg WHETHER you know it as Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Hermannsburg School, “DSH” or just “HMB”, the school has stood the test of time as a place of excellence in education. This year we will celebrate our 160th birthday with former pupils, former teachers, staff, members of the board of trustees, and many more friends of the school. The school was founded in 1856, after the first missionaries had arrived in 1854.
Hermannsburg’s museum houses the rich history of the founding of the school, the first Lutheran mission station in KZN, with many precious artifacts and anecdotes, which tell of the highs and lows of the early pioneers in our area. Life was tough, when water shortages and power outages cause consternation in modern times - one need only look at the diaries of the teachers and missionaries who were sent to outly-
ing places, to appreciate all our modern-day creature comforts. Ox wagons and horseback were the popular modes of transport when missionaries first arrived at Hermannsburg, with the first motorcar in the area being owned by a local tradesman called Herr Böhling, in 1914 - of course it was a Model T Ford. Watch next week’s Greytown Gazette for another installment of snippets from “the history of Hermannsburg”.

Kranskop Natu farewell A FAREWELL was held by Kranskop National Teachers’ Union leadership in honour of former leader and chairperson Mr K. Ninela (Ganwa) on 14 April in the Kranskop Farmers' Hall. His immense contribution towards the growth of Natu membership extended to the entire Maphumulo CMC and now Ilembe district jurisdiction. He was congratulated on his new appointment. The event was addressed by the Ilembe district director and Maphumulo CMC officials and thanks were expressed ot all who attended the function. - S.V. Mkhize.

St Cathryn’s news THE past weekend was quiet on the golf course with only visitors staying over having the course to themselves. Mowing is now slowing down with the fairways been cut once in two weeks or so. The disease factor on the course is also slowing down with irrigation water being the biggest problem. The
berg winds, although not very strong, have also made their presence felt. This coming weekend we will be holding our 16th St Cathryn's classic and invite golfers and companies to be part of this special day. Entrance fee covers green fees, half time, supper and prizes. Tee-off is set for 9.30am and with the format of better-ball stableford and with
golfers expected from Johannesburg and Durban it promises to be a fun-filled golfing weekend. Our next Farmers’ Agri Care Monthly Mug is to be played on Saturday 21 May and by then winter should have really set in, which means its back to 10am teeoff times. For golf bookings, phone Piet Nel on 083 269 1661.
