Smashandgrab and armed robbers hit town SMASH-AND-GRAB thieves brazenly stole cellphones and other electronic equipment from a Pine Street cellphone shop on Sunday evening. They smashed open the glass show window with a rock, and in between the burglar bars, managed to hook out a number of items from the display case and front counter. It is estimated that the theft took place round about 11pm on Sunday night. On Monday morning traces of blood could be seen on the shards of broken glass lying on the pavement. Two speakers were found next to the red PO box on the corner of the street. The cellshop’s owner told the Greytown Gazette that equipment worth R25 000 to R30 000, including his Tablet and laptop were stolen. In a lead-up to an armed robbery in Acacia Street three dogs in the vicinity have been poisoned – the pets were in houses adjacent to where an armed robbery took place round about 3am last

Wednesday. The couple were tending to their young son when they were confronted by four armed men. They tied the hands of the two adults and demanded money. On being told that there was no money in the house the attackers then demanded the safe keys threatening to take violent action if they were not given the keys. On opening the safe, they took jewellery, the couple’s cellphones and other small items were taken. The one robber said to the wife: “Make sure you give your son a good education otherwise he will be forced, like me, to make a living like this.” Manager of Seven Oaks Tearoom at the garage, Mr Mahomed Karrim, was seriously assaulted with a firearm by three armed men on Sunday night. They broke open the safe and stole cash and cigarettes, and then ran off. Greytown Police are investigating – anyone with any information is asked to contact the nearest police station.

Alarm alert out for businesses GREYTOWN Police Chief, Lieutenant-Colonel Mchunu has issued a warning to local businesses in regard to a security alarm "scam". In an interview with the Greytown Gazette Colonel Mchunu said the modus operandi is to cut a business alarm - they then wait for the security firm to respond. Once the security firm has checked that there has been no break in and departed, the thieves then return and operate undetected as there is no alarm. Colonel Mchunu urges business owners and staff, when responding to an alarm and no break in is found, to recheck the premises within 30 to 60 minutes to ensure that the thieves have not returned to carry out their crime knowing that there is no alarm. He reported that a local hardware business had been the victim of such an operation last Friday - the thieves had gone through the ceiling and cut a alarm. They had then waited for the security firm to come and go and then returned and had sufficient time to break open a walk-in safe.

Rain, but much more needed THE 37-plus-mm rain recorded in Greytown since Saturday is more than the total recorded for the whole year. Accompanied by freezing weather (after all it is winter) the wet weather was really welcome. While many parts of the province are experiencing flooding and snow problems, Umvoti seems to just be getting light showers, but certainly better than not. International weather experts are claiming that El Niño is finished and that the weather patterns will revert to “normal”, but with global warming temperatures will be quite a bit higher. Greytown residents have for the past week once again had water for five hours – from 5am to 10am. The following statement has been issued by the

Greytown Water committee on the Phase 2 emergwncy intervention: “Wow, we've had nearly a week of water from 5am to 10am, every day. The next step begins this week when we install the just-delivered second batch of borehole pumps. “When these are up and running, we will be able to give every borehole its proper resting period. “This is an extremely important exercise in securing the longevity of the underground water supply. Once again, keep a lookout for next week's Greytown Gazette for the next update.” Residents are reminded that Umvoti is still in a drought disaster situation – despite the rain and Phase 2 – so please continue to be careful and save water.

ANNUALLY, the South African exhibit at the famous Chelsea Flower Show win the highest awards for its display of indigenous flora, much of it showcasing the wealth of the unique Cape floral kingdom. Most often a selection of proteas and pincushions and other fynbos foliage are used en masse to create the focal point of the award winning displays. The magnificent King Protea is South Africa’s national flower and proteas of all varieties are sought after by floral artists across the globe. Many Greytonians will have noticed over the past 18 months, a variety of beautiful blooms from Brayleigh Protea farm gracing homes, bouquets and flower stalls around the province bringing an experience of gloriously rich and diverse Cape flora to KwaZulu-Natal. What began as a tentative experiment with 600 plants of five varieties of pincushions and proteas has exploded into a thriving enterprise of 55 000 plants of 25 different varieties. With more plantings envisaged in the near future this is an exciting and inspiring success story worth hearing. On Tuesday 2 August Umvoti Garden Club members and guests will be visiting Brayleigh

LOCAL government elections take place next Wednesday, 3 August. There are now 14 wards in Umvoti which are being contested by four parties - ANC, DA, EFF, IFP and a number of Independents. There are 90 voting stations throughout the municipality with 506 trained by IEC staff manning the stations which will open at 7am and close at 7pm. A more detailed report will be published to assist voters in next week’s Greytown Gazette. An early reminder – voters must vote at the station at which they are registered, they must produce a green ID document or temporary identification certificate or a Smartcard ID card. Voters will be given three ballot papers - yellow to vote for a political party to be counted for proportional representative councillors. Grey for your Ward Councillor and green to vote for a political party for representation on Umzinyathi District Council. Special votes will be carried out by the IEC on Monday and Tuesday Greytown IEC head, Chris Naidoo told the Greytown Gazette that there were a total of 695 special votes registered for these elections - in the last election there had been 605.

Protea. Proteas, home of Murray and Juanita Mason, to learn more about this exciting and rewarding enterprise right on our doorstep and will be able to see how these magnificent blooms are grown, picked and packed for the local flower market. Subject to availability bunches of proteas or pincushions will be on sale after the meeting. Members and guests are encouraged to come along and enjoy an interesting morning starting at 9.30am. Directions to the venue will be signposted off the Muden Road near Merthley Lake turn-off. Please bring chairs to sit on during the presentation and comfortable walking shoes for the excursion through the proteas.

Just giving … SOMETIMES we need to shift our focus off our own familiar path. We need to take time to spotlight another need that is greater than our own. Graham Castle-Ward lives in the United Kingdom. He posted last week: “Doing three triathlons over the summer and hope to raise £1 000 and raise awareness for the

Red House Project.” The Red House Project was conceptualised almost four years ago. It grew out of a desire to assist children who are orphaned and abandoned. All the money raised by this charity goes to organisations which assist children. The project has built a house in an orphanage and raised

close to R100 000 for charity. We are overwhelmed and moved by Graham's initiative to support our charitable cause. If you would like to support Graham go to crowd funding.justgiving.com where you can make a donation. Thank you for your selflessness. Michael Yeadon

Wonderful donation of water IN a generous and much appreciated donation on Sunday 24 July the Samaj South Africa (Midlands region), represented by chairperson Mrs Anitha Singh, vicechairperson PT. Kiran Satgoor, treasurer Mr Dharam Chedi and assistant treasurer Krishen Ramsaran, donated over 2000 litres of water to the Shri Vishnu Mandir Greytown. This generous donation was gratefully accepted by the officials and members of the Shri Vishnu Mandir and the Greytown Feeding Project.

The donors and the donation.

Former mayor speaks out about municipal misuse of finances THE former Greytown Mayor, Councillor Petros Ngubane has expressed considerable concern about the ongoing misuse and abuse by Umvoti Municipality of municipal assets and ratepayers’ money. In a statement this week to the Greytown Gazette, he stated: “The appointment by Umvoti Mayor T. Ngubane of security guards from a private company, which is said to be costing over R100 000 a month - paid for by ratepayers. “Then the still unanswered queries in regard to the R23 million worth of equipment

bought last year - 75% of which is still standing unused in the engineer’s yard. Council had agreed that tenders for this equipment be processed for the equipment to be bought direct from the dealer. However, it was bought from a private company and no documentation has been produced for this tender. It was also short-delivered - with one truck not been delivered.” Councillor Ngubane states that despite continuous requests to the municipal manager and the mayor as to who actually ordered this equipment and who signed for the

incorrect delivery, no response had been given by either the mayor or the MM. The former mayor continues in his press statement to query the use of municipal funds for political party campaigning. “The Mayor [Councillor Thami Ngubane] organised soccer matches at Mbuba using municipal assets, staff and money and supplied water tanks to Makhabaleni Ward 6 without the involvement of the ward councillor, as well as Ward 2 and the new Ward 13 - clearly political campaigning for his party - no reference to Exco or Council to do this.’’

‘Greytown Gazette’ deadlines YES, it is happening again. Two public holidays so two issues of the Greytown Gazette on early deadlines. The good news is that there are just two more public holidays this year - Heritage Day, 24 September falls on a Saturday, which is good news for the Greytown Gazette. However, the Day of Reconciliation falls on Friday 16 December, and the final issue of the Greytown Gazette is Wednesday 21 December, but more about those deadlines in a few months time. For the issue of Wednesday 3 August, local government election day, which has been declared public holiday, the deadline for display advertisements is Thursday 28

July at 1pm and for classifieds is 12pm on Friday 30 July. Reports and photos from schools, sports, clubs, news, etc – deadline as usual - 10am on Monday 1 August. The Greytown Gazette will, as usual, be delivered to all retail outlets early on the morning of Wednesday 3 August. National Women’s Day, a public holiday, is on Tuesday 9 August, so the early deadlines for the issue of 10 August are Thursday 1pm for display advertisements and Friday 12pm. This means an earlier deadline for copy - Friday 1pm - this would be much appreciated with urgent reports as early on Monday as possible.

Elderly suffer in winter without assistance MR Sbusiso Dladla (64) lives in abject poverty alone in a dilapidated shack in Ward 8 Muden, and although he gets a pension, he is emotionally unstable. KZN provincial officials came to see him on 17 June and promised to build a decent home for him, but nothing has materialised.

The frail man has been pleading for assistance. A social worker, who visited him this month said: “He needs help and especially now that it is winter he's not coping." A spokesperson for the Zimbanbelini Community Development in the area, told Greytown Gazette that there are many elderly people in Muden and

adjacent rural communities in the same situation. Zimbambeleni would welcome any support support in the form of blankets, food or anything to keep these people warm and nourished this winter in the harsh conditions under which they live. I thank the parents who made the effort to listen to this incredible speaker to hear the dangers surrounding various social media networking sites. We would like to remind you about some things she mentioned. • All pupils are liable for anything they post on any social media platform. The school has the right to expel a child if anything they post goes against the school’s code of conduct,

even if such behaviour takes place off the school’s property. • All posts on social media are owned by the social media enterprises. • Your son or daughter could lose their job because of something that was posted during their school years. • Settings on phones can pin-point your child’s exact location at any given moment. • Once anything is posted onto a social media site it stays on for life and can never be removed. • Do not let people take pictures of you without your consent. • When applying for a job the employer looks at the so-

Wembley College would like to welcome the following new pupils - Monique Jonker, Liam Dixon, Sonri Scholtz, Uttara Moodley, Kriya Moodley, Juwairiya Sayed and Amory Wilken. Welcome to the Wembley family. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Pretorius for showing the Form 1 class around the Chubby Chicks operation. Milla, one of the youngest members to have been chosen, will form part of a relay team comprising U18, U17 and U16 lifesavers all of whom have won many South African medals for the sport. Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle AFTER a well-deserved rest, all our Little Oaks and their teachers are back for an exciting third term. We still have so much learning to do, and very interesting themes and field trips await us. We will participate in the inter-house athletics meeting, have

a traffic day and will welcome our grandparents for another unforgettable “Ouma und Oupa” Day, to mention but some of them. We wish our pupils, their families and teachers a phenomenal, superb and outstanding term. The Little Oaks’ teachers (from left) Uta Malzahn, Annette Gathmann, Themba Mzila, Alina Böhm, currently back in Germany, and Micayla Reineke met at the Tranquilitea Garden at the end of last term to review the year and plan ahead for this term.

Hermannsburg Happenings AFTER a month of holiday, we welcomed back our pupils and teachers on Monday, extending a warm Hermannsburg welcome to some new faces too. Our new English teacher, Mr Geoffrey Allen, is already in the thick of things, having participated in the English lessons during the winter school for our Grade 12 pupils. We also welcome new pupils in Grades 9 and Grade 10, including a guest pupil from Germany, who will be spending the next few months with us and immersing himself in our diversity of cultures. We hope their stay at Hermannsburg will be enjoyable, fruitful and constructive. Our Grade 10 Germany Exchange Programme pupils will be adjusting to regular school again, having come back from Ger-

many just in time to go straight into the July holidays, but they have all grown tremendously through their experience in Germany and established life-long connections with their partner families, learning about life and themselves in ways they probably don’t yet suspect. Ahead of us lie the interhouse general knowledge quiz, inter-house athletics (among other athletic meetings and numerous sports fixtures), the primary school play, the HMB Eisteddfod, Supper Theatre and the annual HMB Golf Day. The Grade 12s are on the last stretch before their trial examinations begin at the end of August, after which the senior certificate examinations will be upon them. We wish them strength and perseverance as they prepare for these challenges.

MANDELA DAY Mandela Day in action

67Minute smiles from Durban to Greytown

Involved in the true meaning of Mandela Day, Sisekelo High School pupils did a great job of cleaning the rubbish and litter from the streets and pavements of Kranskop on 18 July.

Cleaning up on Mandela Day

It was smiles all around for the 60 children at Khayalami Village when Durban NPO, Icebolethu Foundation personnel, visited them in Greytown on Mandela Day. As an initiative of the Icebolethu Foundation, staff got together and drove from Durban to Greytown to spend time with the children, bringing boxes of clothing, blankets and toys, which had been collected by them the previous week. The children, house mothers and man-

agement team were most appreciative and needless to say, Icebolethu Foundation, left the home, with children ranging in age from two to 18 all smiling. The Icebolethu Foundation will continue to support communities in need and appeal to businesses and potential sponsors in the Greytown area to partner with them as they plan to make this initiative an annual cause. For more information, contact Anelisa Msimang, foundation manager at 031 201 1281.

In the true spirit of Mandela Day Ekhamanzi Primary School pupils dedicated their time to helping the community by cleaning their church, the Ekhamanzi Congregation Lutheran church they enthusiastically and energetically cleaned the outside and inside to express their appreciation of what Mandela had done for South Africa and their freedom.

Have you ever thought of the story behind an abandoned baby?

“I was raped by the father of my child. My mother told me I was not welcome in our house if I had another baby. I gave birth in the veld and left my baby there. I can’t even care for myself, how would I care for a child?” 18-year-old girl from Tembisa

It was happiness all round for the ‘littlies’ of Khayalami Village and members of Icebolethu Foundation from Durban.

Now you know, become part of the solution:

PLEASE NOTE

Shadow Column THE Greytown Gazette publishes a Shadow Column at the end of each month listing events to come during the year. The objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place in order to avoid, as far as possible, two events on the same date. This “double dating” could create problems not only for the organisers but also for members of the public wanting to support the events. Therefore an appeal goes out to schools, welfare

organisations, churches NGOs, sports bodies, clubs, etc. to submit dates and details of events to the Greytown Gazette for publication. Its so easy, just email greytowngazette@gmail. com phone 033 413 2310 or fax 033 413 1933. One of the many Greytonians, Santhisha Janthielayal with Mo, who grew up in Greytown. They thoroughly enjoyed the Mo Magic show in Pietermaritz burg Sunesh Hottie (who was at Greytown Secondary School with Mo), Riara Hottie and Vishen Naicker with Mo Moorad at his show.

Debonairs Pizza owner Steve Theunissen and staff members Pretty Dlamini and Sena Mdlela visited Khayalami to celebrate Mandela Day. The children were thrilled to be given a slice of pizza and a Debonairs Pizza ruler and balloon as toys and puzzles. They played with the little ones and helped them with their English reading a special initiative by Debonairs Pizza to give back to the community.

Men, take care of your health IT is important that men have a positive mindset when it comes to going for regular health check-ups and screening. At the end of the day it's common sense - early detection has saved many lives. Men need to know their bodies and proactively seek medical advice when they detect abnormalities and arrange for relevant screening, especially if their family history indicates a predisposition towards a particular condition or cancer. Although prostate cancer accounts for the highest percentage of male cancers in SA and worldwide, it is important for men to take note of other prevalent cancers so they can be aware of symptoms and factors that may increase or reduce their risk for these cancers. Top cancers affecting SA males, according to the 2010 National Cancer Registry, include prostate cancer, Kaposi sarcoma, lung cancer and colorectal cancer Prostate cancer does not develop suddenly. There is a gradual change from normal prostate cells, through various levels of cell abnormality, to pre-cancer lesions and eventually cancer. This whole process can take many years. Kaposi sarcoma (KS) causes patches of abnormal tissue to grow under the skin, in the lining of the mouth, nose, throat or in other organs - in HIV/Aids patients, the disease moves quickly Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women worldwide, and is more common in men than women. Smoking accounts for the majority of preventable lung cancers. Most colorectal cancers begin as a polyp, a small growth of tissue that starts in the lining and grows into the centre of the colon or rectum. Doctors can remove polyps during the colonoscopy procedure.

Testicular cancer affects mostly men aged between 15 and 39. Younger men are encouraged to conduct regular testicular selfexaminations soon after the onset of puberty. Feel for any lumps, changes in size or irregularities and consult a health practitioner if any abnormalities are detected. Aside from regular screening and medical check-ups, men may reduce their cancer risk, by making the following smart choices: • Live a balanced lifestyle (which includes intake of healthy food and drink, avoiding alcohol and tobacco; regular exercise, responsible sexual behaviour) • Avoid carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) • Be aware of changes in their body, as well as the warning signs of cancer Cansa Care Centres offer a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, which is a fingerprick blood test to help detect prostate ab-

normalities; education on self-testicular exams; colorectal cancer screening - testing for occult (concealed) blood in stool; and FotoFinder screening - mole mapping dermoscope device for detecting skin cancer. Phone the tol-free call centre on 0800 22 6622, or email info@cansa.org.za You can also join Champions of Hope Facebook Group for cancer survivors and chat to peers who are facing similar challenges. Cansa ensures that South African men have access to valuable and potentially lifesaving information regarding symptoms of male cancers via our 30 Cansa Care Centres countrywide, and via our mobile health clinics for men in remote areas, throughout the year. In addition, Cansa raises awareness of male cancers through the annual Movember and DareDevil campaigns and the Testimonials campaign.

Avo ancestry IT is believed that avocados originated in the southern part of Central America, growing wild for millennia before they were cultivated. Archaeologists in Peru have found domesticated avocado seeds buried with Incan mummies dating back to 750 BC and there is also evidence that avocados were cultivated in Mexico as early as 500 BC. Named “the fruit of the gods” by Central American Indians who worshipped its ability to increase vitality and general well being, these ancient civilisations used avos not only as a means of nutrition, but also believed it to be an aphrodisiac. Suggestively shaped,

the name avocado actually comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl meaning testicle. In South Africa, the first avocado orchard was established in the 1920s by Harry Ludman. From that point on the avocado industry flourished in the country, and today South Africa is one of the world’s major producers of avocados and ranks among the top three exporters to Europe. Avos are perfect partners for a low-carb lifestyle, and incorporating avos into your meals is also a great way to boost your daily intake of monounsaturated fats and essential nutrients such as magnesi-

um (five percent of the NRV for adults), folic acid (five percent of the NRV for adults) and vitamin C (10% of the NRV for adults) and 1, 2. As if that wasn’t enough, rich and creamy avos are proven to be heart healthy and effective fighters against ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol 3, 4 Experts say eating avos may be associated with better diet quality and beneficial nutrient intakes 5. But please don’t squeeze. To test for ripeness, green-skinned avos should yield to a gentle squeeze in the palm of the hand, or the fruit stalk should easily fall off when nudged with your thumb. Testing

27 July 2016 the Hass variety is even easier as its green skin changes to purpleblack as it ripens. South Africa boasts several different avocado varieties, including the popular Fuerte and Hass. But there are many other delicious cultivars to tuck into, such as Edranol, Ryan, Pinkerton, Reed, Carmen®-Hass, Maluma™ and Gem®. Watch Suzelle DIY for some fantastic avo tips on www.avocado.co.za or www.facebook.com/iloveavocadoSA Avo ice cream Serves 6. Ingredients 4 avocados 20ml lemon juice 1 Granny Smith apple 360ml Appletiser or apple juice 30ml brown sugar 1 sprig rosemary 30ml cream 400 g vanilla ice cream Method Peel apple and cut into small cubes. Add sugar and rosemary to the apple juice/appletiser, and allow the apple pieces to cook in the liquid until very soft. Remove the rosemary sprig and puree the cooked apples with the cooking liquid and the cream until smooth. Peel the avocados, remove pulp and puree until smooth. Add the lemon juice to prevent browning and set aside.

Mix the apple and avocado puree. Allow the ice cream to stand out of the freezer until slightly softer. Fold the puree into the ice cream until combined. Allow to set overnight in the freezer. Avo cheese cake Serves 8-10 Ingredients 250g Tennis Biscuits, crushed 100g butter, melted 2 packets lime jelly 100ml boiling water 750g cream cheese 2 large ripe avocados, pureed 15ml lemon juice Mixed berries, sliced avos and kiwi fruit to garnish Method Preheat the oven to 180°C Prepare the biscuit base by mixing the melted butter into the crushed biscuits. Press biscuit mixture into the bottom of a 23cm spring form pan. Place in the oven for 5-8 minutes to crisp the biscuits, remove and cool. Dissolve the jelly in boiling water, whilst the jelly is dissolving, beat the cream cheese with the puréed avocado and the lemon juice until combined, pour in the dissolved jelly Pour the mixture into the spring form pan and allow to set overnight. To serve, release the cheesecake from spring form pan, garnish with mixed berries, avocado slices and kiwi fruit.

• REMOVE rust from a cast-iron pan by soaking it in a solution of half white distilled vinegar and half water. Be careful not to let it sit too long or the acid in the vinegar could damage the pan. • Clean off the blades of a worn can opener with an old toothbrush soaked with full strength vinegar to help remove dirt and grease. • Stained refrigerators will shine like new after soaking problem areas in undiluted white distilled vinegar. • Use vinegar in the dishwasher instead of another glass cleaner to keep your glassware sparkling. • Soaking silverware in a sink full of vinegar is sure-fire way to get it shining again. • Clean counter tops and make them smell sweet again with a cloth soaked in undiluted white distilled vinegar. • Scrubbing stainless-steel with a blend of white distilled vinegar, liquid dish soap, and essential oils will cut grime and costs. • Make a homemade spray cleaner for the kitchen and bathroom. One part white vinegar, four parts water, 10-20 drops of essential oil (optional), and one teaspoon of organic dish soap. This does wonders on counter tops, high chair trays, baseboards, walls, appliances, floors, and everywhere else things can be dumped, spilled or tracked. • Renew sponges and dish cloths by placing them in just enough water to cover them. Then add 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar. Let them soak overnight. • Clean the wheel of a can opener using white distilled vinegar and an old toothbrush. • Remove dark stains on an aluminum pot by boiling a mixture of one cup white distilled vinegar and one cup hot water. • For stained and smelly plastic food containers, wipe them with a cloth dampened with white distilled vinegar. • Remove stains from coffee and teacups by scrubbing them gently with equal parts of salt (or baking soda) and white distilled

vinegar. Rinse clean. • Remove mineral deposits from coffee makers with white distilled vinegar. Fill the water reservoir with one cup or more of white distilled vinegar and run it through a whole cycle. Run it once or twice more with plain water to rinse clean. (Check the owners' manual for counter-indications.) • Get rid of lime deposits in a tea kettle by adding 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar to the water and letting it sit overnight. If more drastic action is needed, boil full-strength white distilled vinegar in the kettle a few minutes, let cool and rinse with plain water. • For cloudy glassware, soak paper towels or a cloth in undiluted white distilled vinegar and wrap around the inside and outside of the glass. Let sit before rinsing clean. • Remove soap buildup and odors from the dishwasher by pouring a cup of white distilled vinegar inside the empty machine and running it through a whole cycle. Do monthly. • To clean a grease splattered oven door window, saturate it with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Keep the door open for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping with a sponge. • Eliminate smells in an oven by using a sponge soaked in diluted white distilled vinegar and wiping down the surfaces on the inside of the oven. Repeat with water and let air dry. • Clean the shelves and walls of the refrigerator with a 50/50 solution of water and white distilled vinegar. • Clean the microwave by mixing 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil inside the microwave. Baked-on food will be loosened, and odors will disappear. Wipe clean. • Refresh your ice trays. Let them soak in vinegar for 4-5 hours, then rinse well under cold water and let dry. • Spray cutting boards with undiluted vinegar to remove surface residue. - C2016 Mizkan Americas, Inc.

July is Mental Health Awareness Month JULY is Mental Health Awareness Month when people with mental problems are encouraged to find the help and treatment they need. It is estimated that a fifth of South Africans will experience a depressive disorder at least once during their lifetime and more than 60% will not get the necessary help. According to the SA Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) the biggest danger of anxiety and depression is suicide and the incidence of suicide has soared.

For people with a metal disorder, people who have lost a loved one or undergone a trauma the sense of isolation can be as destructive as their diagnosis or the traumatic event says Sadag. Depression is not just a temporary “wobble” that an individual can snap out of - it can last for many years, but there is a treatment available which can make a difference to the lives of many people. Greytown GAZETTE

SPORT NEWS Valley 2 Valley 2016 FOR the third year the exciting and challenging Valley 2 Valley navigational motorbike enduro took place at Imbabala covering Muden and Weenen valleys. A total of 168 riders took part (including three ladies), from Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State and with four riders from Cape Town. One of the Cape riders was Rory Scheffer, who came straight from France where he had been competing (very successfully) in the Kilians Classik trail run. KZN had a great turn-out and it was great to have a lot of local support from Greytown riders. This enduro involves a lot of detailed planning and from January, Roger Scheffer, Deon Bruss and Mark Deane, with the help of Shane Hechter, Derrick Clegg, Glen Meter and Shane Holmes, rode nearly every weekend looking for tracks and planning the route - a two-day navigational enduro. Riders have to ride and navigate the course by GPS predetermined tracks. Day one consisted of a 75km track starting at Imbabala to the Middelrus and Muden Valley. The first rider came in an impressive three hours, the last rider came in after nine hours. Day two was a 65km ride into

Event organisers Roger Scheffer and Mark Deane with Shane Holmes and Glen Meter at the finish.

the Weenen Valley to the Bushman’s River and back to Imbabala. The first rider was in after 2.5 hours and last in six hours. Some of the locations on route were named after local riders Badgers Joke 2 Step, Holmes waterfall, Shane’s Bath (Hecther), Deon’s Revenge, Rogers Diner and Marks Rocks, among others. There was good community and spectator viewing at “Cloggs climb”, which created amusement on day one. Day 2’s entertainment was provided at “Glen’s rockery”, a challenging section with some good humoured colourful language provided by the riders. A huge thank you to the organisers, participants, sponsors, local area chiefs and spectators and especially to Chief Mchunu, who endorsed this event - everyone played a part in making this year's event a great success. Also a big expression of appreci-

ation to the sponsors - the title sponsor New Holland, Racefood, TR TEC Adventures, Supaquik Greytown, aQuellé, Halls Bike Wash, Shemungwe Game capture, Village Signs Greytown, H2B Building, Alfie Cox Racing, Greytown Air-conditioning and Refrigeration. A big thank you to Stephanie and her catering team at Imbabala Game Lodge for catering and hosting 230 people at the event and for keeping the riders and spectators well fed. Valley to Valley 2016 donated R7 000 to the local chief and headsmen (who assisted and cooperated for this event) in the form of cattle dip, knapsack sprayers, seed maize and potato seed. As organiser, Roger Scheffer, said; “From the catering, challenging riding and the vibe as a whole - our event for 2016 was definitely one for the books.”

From the ditch SATURDAY afternoon's somewhat strange weather did not stop four bowlers playing in the first round of the club's drawn pairs championships. Gerhard Balzer and Jordan Bondoris beat Erika Fischer and Wessel Pretorius, while Jack Drew and Kobus Uys lost to

Chris Fischer and Wendy Edwards. The good news is Ultra Liquors is the sponsor for the fun day to take place on Wednesday 9 August, a public holiday Women’s Day. Sign up soon to have a day of fun, lots of chatter and good food.

Firebreak Fun 5 Night Series WITH the emphasis on five, the Firebreak Fun 5 Night Series starts again on Monday 1 August over five kilometres, on five routes and on the five Mondays of August. The run starts at 5.30am from Clegg’s field where it also finishes. This is a great family event – cost is R12 for a family per event or R50 per entry per run or R30 for the children. If you sign up for all five runs, the fifth one is free per individual. Participants are reminded that headlights are compulsory and warming glühwein and soup for the finishers. After the final run on 29 August

there will be prize giving, with two Run the Berg entries as prizes and Racefood and a family braai will take place. For more information, contact Hilary Bruss on 083 383 9929.
