Water ‘thieves’ drain Jojo tanks ACCORDING to a press release from Umvoti water service provider, Umzinyathi, in 24 days time Phase 2 water intervention will be in operation and the reticulation of water to the water treatment plant will be resumed with the early morning limited supply once again in operation. Phase 2 should have been completed three weeks ago, but contractors downed tools due to payment problems. It is hoped that Umzinyathi District Municipality officials are monitoring this project on a daily basis to ensure that it is completed on 22 nd July as stated in this press release. It would be tragic to have a repeat of the Craigieburn pipe dream fiasco. Since the water reticulation system was shut down on 19 June the 84 Jojo tanks in Greytown and surrounds have been the lifeline for most residents. While the majority have been drawing just enough for their daily needs there are, since the cut-off of the water, a group of selfish, callous, anti-social people who are aggressively draining Jojos wherever they can. While the tanks have been placed so residents in that area can fill, these “thieves” patrol the streets to fill as many containers as can fit on the back of a bakkie, or into an SUV. Umvoti Municipality, which has not been proactive since the beginning of the water problems, is supposed to be monitoring the irregular usage, but its attitude from the beginning has been “we are not the water service provider, its up to Umzinyathi”. In a press release Umzinyathi states: “Currently each tank has one tap installed and that was found to be insufficient as this causes a lot of fights among community members while filling up. As a result a second tap will
This photo says more than words. be installed on tanks to prevent further confrontations and ensure an orderly and peaceful filling stations for the community. “The Jojo tanks will be fastened adequately to prevent further theft and vandalism that has been experienced in the past. “Greytown has been divided into two zones - Enhlalakahle Zone will be filled by four trucks doing two trips each (one load can fill up three Jojo tanks) from 5am to 7.30am daily. “The Greytown zone will be filled by two trucks doing 10 trips each, from 5am to 3pm. The 84 Jojo tanks will only
be filled up once a day, providing a supply of 420m3 per day from the Greytown Water Treatment Plant. Businesses will have to buy water from the district municipality and collect from the Makhabeleni Water Treatment Works.” To the disappointment of a large number of residents the urgent meeting called by Operation Sakhe (bringing government services to the people), was cancelled last Friday. Umvoti Council, despite assurances given to the public last May that monthly updates would be given at meetings or press statements issued, has not
done so. A special Umvoti Council statutory meeting was called for yesterday, but the subject of water was not on the agenda. Residents, dependent on collecting water for their daily usage from a Jojo tank in their area are doing their utmost to cope with this serious situation, which is being compounded by the few who apparently believe that it is their “right” to drain or vandalise a Jojo tank. Is it too much to ask them to consider the community, especially the aged and sick, and refrain from their greedy tactics of stealing water.

Hermannsburg congregation potjiekos competition winners FROM wildebeest to hearts and gizzards, from baked beans and bacon to mutton curry, from hearty beef to samp and vegetables, the contestants brought their culinary expertise to The Beehive on Saturday last week to delight the taste buds of all who sampled the various potjiekos dishes. The judges agreed that the standard of the competition was raised across the board this year, as Out of Africa (Liesel Minnaar and Tish van Rooyen) took top honours for the second year running, followed by Blue Spice (Chetty family) and Safari Excellence (Christie Scholtz, Anelda Uys, Ankia Jonker and Penny Waller). Thank you Top End Butchery for the winner’s voucher and to St Cathryn’s for the opportunity for the winners to cook a potjie at St Cathryn’s for a charity of the winner’s choice. The Judge’s Choice award went to the Bangle Team (Wendy Edwards) for a potjie with a difference. The Singing Cowboys (Jose de Nobrega, Wikus Joubert, André Pieters and Frankie Joubert) won the Team Spirit section with their
lively renditions of country and western classics, followed by the Rhinestone Cowboy-girl team (René and Claudia Risch) in second place. The prize for best setup went to Out of Africa. The prize for the best-dressed team went to the Rhinestone Cowboy-girl team. The judges could not award the Burnt Pot trophy, as there were no burnt pots. In the vegetable-peeling competition the Singing Cowboys peeled fastest to win the prize. Our thanks to everyone who supported the event (whether in cash or kind), to Gary and Carola Redinger of The Beehive for the excellent venue, to the Von Seydlitz family, Ewald Köhne and Kevin Williams for donating and creating the new floating trophy, to members of our congregation for jams, breads, prizes and donations (and for being an awesome congregation), to Rhino Charcoal for charcoal, to Günther Köhne for firewood, to Rainer Kassier for the vegetables and to the members of the congregation’s events committee for the behindthe-scenes preparation and work on the day.

The ‘green finger’ touch Now you know, become part of the solution:
THREE years ago, Nonhlanhla "Winnie" Buthelezi, who was working in Greytown, was given a sweet potato slip by her then employer. When she went back home to Mbuba she asked neighbours what to with it and they told her how to plant it. She planted it and more or less forgot about it until a few weeks ago when she decided to clean up and clear the garden.
Child abandonment shouldn’t be happening in a caring world. Help someone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy make informed and responsible decisions for their child and themselves, by calling 0800 864 658 or visiting www.crisispregnancy.org.za for information, options and support.
There was this huge spread of leaves and stems and on digging up came many very large sweet potatoes, and they taste good too. One of the largest weighed in at three kilograms. Definitely a lady with green fingers, Winnie, who is currently unemployed, is looking for a job (076 776 3444). She obviously enjoys gardening.

GREYTOWN’S drastically reduced water supply has resulted in many a challenge – and topping the priority list is how to keep clean and healthy using as little water as possible. The solution – a good strong three, four or fivelitre garden pressure spray, which can be bought locally. Greytonian Jan van Biljon contacted the Greytown Gazette: “A friend of mine mentioned that when he goes camping he uses a pressure sprayer and has a nice shower with about three litres of water. This was such a good idea that I immediately bought one with a four-litre capacity (I have another, but this had been used for spraying insecticides and was
MULTI MIX, newly opened in Sparcade, features a wide range of aromatic and colourful spices. Well known in the retail trade, Noor Sayed and her son Omar, also stock a wide range of plastic ware and there is a fast-food sec-
worried about the residue). My wife and I now both have a decent spray, or wash or shower using just a couple of litres. You can hold the spray in your hand, obviously it is better n your birthday suit, and it’s easy to spray water on yourself, but even more fun if your partner does the spraying. The Greytown Gazette would appreciate positive water- saving tips from readers for publication. Residents are facing the same hassles so positive suggestions, like the spray shower, are of great help to many.
tion that serves samoosas and pies etc daily and breyani as a weekend treat on Fridays and Saturdays. Multi Mix owner Noor Sayed told Greytown Gazette in an interview: “We wanted to provide a special-
ity store to cater for all spice requirements in our area, a haven for those who take pride in their cooking. Even if you’re new to the kitchen, our two staff members, Mbali and Zamile, are there to assist in mixing spices.”
Works much better without clothes on, but the ‘Greytown Gazette’ is a family newspaper.
AA: avoid driving in areas of unrest WITH protests erupting all over the country, finding yourself driving through the middle of one is not as unlikely as you may think. This is according to the Automobile Association (AA), which urged motorists to take precautionary measures if they ever find themselves too close to mass protest action. The association said the first, and most important action, is to avoid these areas as far as possible. "It is important that anyone driving in an area that may be affected by unrest understands that the police will most probably have blocked off the road to prevent entry," the association said. "Listen to the police, and
don't put yourself in any danger by disobeying them. If you are in this situation, check for possible escape routes you can use, or for a police presence that you can approach for assistance." Witness Reporter. Other tips for motorists unexpectedly caught in the middle of a protest situation include: • Stay in your car as long as possible; • Unbuckle your seat belt, and those of any passengers, and be prepared to exit your car quickly; • Keep your car moving as far as you can, while checking for possible escape routes; • Avoid hitting any protesters with your vehicle as this may turn the mob
against you; • Do not taunt the protesters by shouting or hooting at them; • Remain as calm as possible to ensure you are aware of what is going on around you; • Seek assistance or safety from the police as quickly as you can (if you do not see the police, call them); • If you are stuck and the situation seems to be turning, leave your car and get out of the area on foot - remember your life is more valuable than your car or possessions; and • Once you are safe, call family or friends to let them know where you are and what is happening. AA. - supplied.

Hermannsburg Happenings
Window on Wembley
HOW many schools have their own, nationally accredited museum? Last week Grade 4 pupils visited our Mission House Museum after learning about the local history in social sciences lessons. A big thank you to Ms Petra Reibeling for showing them around and telling them all about the missionaries and how Hermannsburg came to be here in South Africa. It was fascinating to see the old household and other tools and objects that were so important in the past, but aren’t often found in modern homes, workshops and businesses. Some pupils would have loved to have taken some of them for their own home. The primary school has
THANK you to all our parents and pupils for yet another successful term. Without your hard work and dedication, it would not have been possible. I would like to extend a particular word of thanks to the PA for the Mountain Bike Challenge we had this term. What you managed to achieve was astounding and we appreciate it. We wish you all a peaceful and well-deserved break. Be sure to spend as much time together as possible and appreciate every moment. Ms Emma Sadleir will be presenting a talk to our pupils on Wednesday 20 July at 7.30am, on the accountability that accompanies the use of social media applications
been collecting canned food and other food items for the Umvoti Aids Centre, to help their feeding scheme. The canned food and some clothes will soon be presented to them, and we hope this will fill some hungry tummies and keep them warm. This is just one of our outreach activities - for many years our school has supported the Jehova Ngihlenge Crêche in Ntunjambili, run by retired nurse Mrs Margaret Sithole. Mrs Sithole was invited to visit a partner school in Germany, and is currently there with Mrs Stella Cockburn, outreach projects coordinator acting as interpreter. The first port of call will be
the Lobetal School in Celle, where Hermannsburg Old Pupil Peter Schulze will be hosting the two South African visitors. Some may also remember Willing Schulze, his father, who was the principal of our school in the 1960s. From Celle, the two will continue to Hermannsburg, Germany, Cologne and Hamburg before travelling back to chilly-sunny South Africa. We look forward to hearing all about their experiences when they return. We wish our pupils, parents and teachers a blessed and restful winter holiday, having seen them off in true Hermannsburg tradition with a final devotion and handshake last Friday.
like Facebook. She will also be presenting a talk on Tuesday, 19 July at 6pm in the Aloe Hall. We encourage the Wembley family to make use of this opportunity so that we can learn how to protect both ourselves, and those we care for, while working on the internet. Superheroes and princesses came to the Cubbies Lair last week Friday. Damsels in distress were rescued by Batman, Superman, Spiderman and many other strong, brave heroes. The girls looked beautiful in their finest and the heroes did their best to keep Wembley College safe. Thank you to all the parents who helped their children enjoy a special day at school.
Some Grade 4 pupils at the Mission House Museum in Hermanns burg. Congratulations to Dean Page and Calista Muna on winning their mixed doubles Tennis final against CG Nefdt and Hannah Tedder.
Thank you to Kranskop Clinic Some primary school children with the cans and other goods they collected for the Umvoti Aids Centre.
Wishing our pupils a fantastic holiday after the morning devotion in true Hermannsburg style.
TEACHERS and pupils from Sisekelo High School expressed their appreciation to Kranskop Clinic for introducing a new programme to advise and assist the youth about how to take care of their health and how to make use of clinic services. On 23 June, Kranskop Clinic sent two health workers, Sister Zama Ntuli and lay counsellor Sandile Zondi, to introduce the
programme "Adolescent Youth Friendly Service. Sister Ntuli also carried out screening for TB and checked for depression. Kranskop Clinic is also organising "happy hour" for pupils to come and discuss any problems or difficulties they are experiencing. Happy hour is from Monday to Friday from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Greytown Child and Family Welfare AGM THE Greytown Child and Family Welfare held its 53rd annual general meeting on 18 June. In his annual report president, Mr R. Maharaj said the year had been characterised by challenges and new experiences. The staff had worked well together and held awareness campaigns in various areas, which led to those in need being aware of the assistance available - this resulted in many new cases. Greytown handled 41 cases of abandoned children and 18 in Kranskop. Thirtynine reports were submitted to court for placement of these children whose names and those of their biological parents were published in the Greytown Gazette. Currently there are 482 children in foster care under the supervision of the society's social workers. The pre-school, run by the society, is now in its 38th year with children benefitting considerably from the school classes in that they are prepared for formal schooling. Office bearers elected for the following year at the AGM: President: R.Maharaj, vicepresident: Miss M.Bridgebookan, secretary: Miss S. Balwanth; treasurer: I.M. Archer, committee members: Miss R. have yet to start –already 3 weeks late Please arrange to play your matches as soon as possible. Next fun bowls day is earmarked for 9 August, so fit it in your schedules. The last fun day was a record breaker, thanks to Plennegy.

New Hanover Prep School news AT New Hanover Prep, the art of musical theatre is used as a vehicle to develop healthy, confident, wellrounded children who have a sense of value in the world. It provides a unique educational experience that nourishes the body, mind and spirit and creates an environment for children to interact, work together and learn from each other. This week the Grade 6 and Grade 7 children were involved in a theatre performance of “Robin Hood and the New Hanover Hoodies” followed by the Grade 3 pupils who became the “First Kids in Space”. More than just participating in theatre performances, children came away with the ability to integrate their experiences with musical theatre in all other areas of their life with expanded co-operation skills, higher self-esteem, enhanced reading skills, increased co-ordination of left-brain and right-brain activity, evidenced in rhythm, musicality, and movement as well as a respect and tolerance for each other's differences.

Draws were done as follows: Deon van Dyk vs Neill Manser, Fanie van Wyk vs Brent Barkhuizen, Dieter Meyer vs Liekie Steyn and Lawrence Savage vs Jarad Manser. With most golf courses only having 18 holes, Dieter, as happened in 2015, had to play 19 holes to try and beat Liekie as they were all square after 18 holes. Liekie beat Dieter. Deon beat Neill five and four and Jarad beat Lawrence four and three. Lawrence walking with a limp, still carrying the wounds of finishing the Comrades. A golfer, who would like to stay anonymous, said Lawrence possibly lost because of the surprise date someone organised him for the afternoon - Brent lost to Fanie five and four.
