Community Watch groups formed A SPATE of burglaries and thefts in specific areas in Greytown has led to the formation of Community Watch-Neighbourhood Watch groups actively involving residents in the areas to participate in crime prevention in co-operation with security firms, SAPS and neighbours. These structures have come about as a result of a brainstorming session between security chief Sudesh Maharaj, IT specialist Rishad Jaenant and now Chairperson Joe Maharaj. Acting promptly, and involving the SAPS and Umvoti Municipality, residents in the Azalea, Acacia streets areas, which has been targeted by criminals, aired their problems at a community meeting. As a result they formed a Neighbourhood Watch and the municipality and police undertook to make the area safe and secure enough to enable children to play outside again. Community Watch (this includes any Neighbourhood Watch groups) is a crimeprevention programme enlisting the participation of residents and law enforcement agencies, to reduce crime, solve problems and generally improve the quality of life in the area. In any given “watch” area residents should recognise, report crimes and suspicious activities, vehicles, individuals, take whatever steps necessary to protect family and property and identify “hot spots” in their neighbourhood, and above all, be vigilant. When all the neighbourhood sectors have been established in Greytown, each section will have its own elected committee that will report to the main overall committee for assistance, problem-solving, etc. In Greytown many people work and leave their domestic employee at home during the day. It is absolutely essential that they are educated on crime prevention and are aware of the dangers of allowing strangers onto the property. To assist with the education and training residents are notified that a meeting for domestic employees will take place Thursday, 29 September, in the Moth Hall from 2pm to 3pm. The purpose of the meeting is to update this group on what to do and what not to do to keep safe and secure through basic crime-prevention measures. Basic tips from the overall Community Watch committee, include know your neighbours, know your house and layout, have a
mobile panic button, and above all, be vigilant, These groups are not vigilantes, but the ears and eyes for reporting crime and helping neighbours through serving as a springboard for reducing and preventing crime in the community. Community Watch groups can be an effec-

tive deterrent to criminal activity, but their success depends on the active and continuous involvement of residents. A Neighbourhood Watch report-back meeting is to take place on Tuesday 11 October in the Moth Hall at 6.30pm to keep the residents covered updated, to discuss problems and any possible action that is needed.
Municipal boreholes vandalised
EIGHT years ago, on 24 June a 22-yearold man raped a mentally challenged seven-year-old girl in the Ahrens area. The little girl was playing with her twoyear-old sister when Sipho Msayi Khumalo grabbed her, throttling her as he pushed her to the ground and raped her. The traumatised seven-year-old, sobbing and disorientated managed to walk to her mother and aunt to report what had happened. Although the young girl struggled to walk as a result of the assault, she was able to identify the rapist. He was arrested by Greytown FCIS. Khumalo appeared in the Greytown Regional Court on 19 September and was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. Investigating Officer Captain Budloo said her team welcomed the sentence. The delay in bringing the rapist to court was that no DNA had been found at the time, but thanks to the determined investigation of the FCIS team and the input of Regional Court prosecutor, Mrs Premie Naidoo, the rapist had been brought to justice.
THE BIG WATER SAVER
Irresponsible vandals have once again been exercising their destructive ways on two municipal boreholes, which are a vital source of water to droughtstricken Greytown residents. Borehole number 5 (pictured) has been damaged and borehole number 6 had also been vandalised, and Lake Merthley is only 16.75% full.

Greytown pupil in top 100 De Beers English Olympiad
28 September 2016
Municipality ‘ditches’ Sargeaunt Street FIVE months ago, in May, a water pipe burst in Sargeaunt Street creating a “ditch” in the road. Five months later, despite numer-
ous complaints from residents to the municipality, nothing has been done to rectify it. It is not only residents who live in the street, but motorists
driving in Sargeaunt street who are damaging their vehicles through this ditch. Desperate residents sent this photograph to the ‘Greytown Gazette’ in the hope that publication would achieve action.
Congratulations to Jessica Dutton on being placed in the top 100 of the De Beers English Olympiad. Jessica, a Grade 12 pupil at The Wykeham Collegiate in Pietermaritzburg, previously attended Wembley College. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Chris Dutton of Greytown.

Rabies know the facts WORLD Rabies Day is on 28 September. Rabies, which affects animals and humans, is a deadly viral disease. The disease, which is vaccine-preventable, is transmitted to humans mainly through the saliva of an infected animal (wild or domestic). This may occur through bites, scratches or when the animal licks broken skin on a person. Dogs are said to be the most common source of rabies. Rabies can be prevented in humans if the correct preventative treatment is administered following exposure to a rabid animal. However, peo-

ple who have been infected with the disease and develop symptoms rarely survive as there is no effective treatment for rabies. Symptoms could appear a few weeks to years after being exposed to the disease. People with rabies could experience a number of signs including headache, fever, muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, anxiety, fear of water, paralysis and seizures. Should a person be bitten or scratched by an animal they believe to be rabid, they should immediately wash the wound, for at least 15 minutes, with water and soap. It is important for anyone bitten or scratched, even in the case of minor injuries, to seek urgent medical attention. Preventative treatment following possible exposure to rabies is: Minor scratches or abrasions on the
surface of the skin – If the dog is immunised, the patient is given a tetanus vaccination and the wound is cleaned and dressed with dry dressings. If the dog’s status is unknown or if it was not immunised, a tetanus and anti-rabies vaccine is administered. Deeper scratches, wounds or puncture wounds – should be washed with tap water and dressed with dry dressing. The patient will be given a tetanus vaccine and in cases where the dog is not immunised or where it is unknown, rabies immunoglobulin will be administered along with the anti-rabies vaccine. To reduce the chances of your dog being infected with rabies, ensure that they are vaccinated against the disease. This is a legal obligation on pet owners. If you see your dog behaving strangely or aggressively even though it is not being provoked, seek the help of professionals. Avoid stray animals. - Chitra Bodasing Harduth, ER24 spokesperson, 084 211 2277.
Shadow Column THE Greytown Gazette publishes a Shadow Column at the end of each month listing events to come ci the year. The objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place in order to avoid, as far as possible, two events on the same date. This "double dating" could create problems not only for the organisers but also for members of the public wanting to support the events. Therefore an appeal goes out to schools, welfare organisations, churches NGOs ,

Msinga Driftkhana next month
Human rights clinics in Umvoti
NOW in its fifth year, the Msinga Driftkhana car-spinning event has developed into far more than just that - it has become a catalyst for many spin-offs benefitting local schools and a business project which employs 45 workers. Event founder and Msinga businessman Smango Mabaso states that the area is well known for its history of political and taxi violence, but the Driftkana is aimed at changing that narrative. To be held on 29 October, the focus is on youth development with two young beneficiaries in particular, Mfundo “La Saint” Mthiyane and Qiniso Mabaso who have joined the event management team to showcase their talent. Mfundo is a Durban graphic designer and photographer. Although he studied PC engineering, his passion is more aligned to the creative arts. He is responsible for all the graphic design and marketing material for the event and says that the Msinga Driftkhana project has pushed him out of his comfort zone. “Car spinning wasn’t something you would look at as a sport so the Driftkhana showed me that anything is possible and it has helped me broaden my business and has opened up so many opportunities for me,” he said. Also involved is Qiniso Mabaso, who was born in the Msinga area. Qiniso is a graduate in management. Msinga DriftKhana has partnered with

The organisation has collected sanitary towels for underprivileged girls in school and helped pupils by hosting career guidance programmes to assist them with career choices. The organisation also provides food parcels to needy families. There will be lots of activities at the Msinga DriftKhana and a pre- and after party over the weekend. General access tickets range from R50 for children under 12 to R100 for adults and R500 for VIP. A private lounge option is available for R1 500 and a VVIP suite is R15 000.

The outreach clinics are designed to promote human rights awareness and to increase the prospects of individual and community driven rights assertion. The clinics are intended to inform communities about their rights and responsibilities, and will provide a platform for community members to engage directly on matters that affect them.

Window on Wembley A TOUR with hidden secrets of the past was undertaken by the Grade 4 class and their tour guide Mrs Swart. Our beautiful town has a rich history and a treasure trove of heritage gems. The first stop was Greytown High School were we found out about how, why and when Greytown was started, as well as the time line of education in Greytown. We met Mr and Mrs Scholtz and Josh and Jandré handed their social science projects about Greytown High School to them to display in the school foyer. Then a trip down memory lane followed, taking us back to the first school built in 1850 called the Umvoti Scholastic Institute. The next stop was the Lutheran Church where Mr Hiestermann educated us on the history of the tree bell and even played it for us. Down Pine Street we looked at the first commercial buildings and that lead
us to the WW1 Memorial and Heritage Site. From there we explored the town hall with its rich history, and the highlight was when we met our mayor, Councillor T.C. Ngubane. We were honoured to hand him some social science projects that he displayed in his office. (Nick - Sir George Grey, Sibahle - Greytown, Yastil - Bhambatha, Triston - General Louis Botha and Tyler - Greytown). We then went to the magistrates’ offices. The St James Bookshop and the beautiful Anglican Church were our next two stops where Pastor Peter kindly enriched our knowledge of Greytown, the church and the Umvoti Mounted Rifles. At our last two stops, the Voortrekker Eeufees Gedenksteen and the NG Kerk, we found out about the mystery of the missing bell. A great historical day was enjoyed by one and all.
Wembley Grade 4 pupils on a historical tour of Greytown. The Form 4 pupils attended the
28 September 2016 Spirit of Adventure Camp from 16 to 18 September which took place at Shongweni Dam. Upon arrival, pupils were introduced to their facilitator and discussed their expectations of the camp. The first activity involved kayaking around the dam towards a cliff, where everyone jumped off into the dam below. Following this pupils were split into teams and given maps which they had to use to navigate around the reserve, finding specific locations. Following this the hungry pupils arrived at camp to cook their own food in the form of a chicken potjie. The next day pupils awoke to a rainy day and it was in this downpour that they undertook some extreme activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and conquering the obstacle course. The evening was spent doing mini Olympics, thankfully out of the rain. The next and last morning pupils completed some challenging mind games, after which the facilitator opened a discussion. The reflective activity identified that leadership comes in four forms and dif-
ferent situations need different approaches. A team is not only about knowing each other’s strengths but also compensating for others weaknesses. Congratulations to Milla Herbst for the incredible achievement of winning a bronze medal at the World Life Saving Championships. On the fourth day of the competition she represented the women’s relay team which came third in the Ocean Women’s relay event. We are very proud of this young lifesaver, who has flown the Wembley flag at new heights. Thank you to all the participants of the annual Go-Kart races during our Founders’ Day. Everyone made a huge effort to dress up. So as a thank you we would like to award the JPs a free civvies day on Friday, 7 October. The go-kart races were lightning fast. So the winning team in each grade has won a super prize - a free milkshake at Wimpy. We will be heading for our treat during school on Friday, 7 October. These “speedies” will be back before the school day is over, so that they can still be fetched from school.
Hermannsburg Happenings THE curtain went up, the lights came on and the multitude of talents of our pupils were revealed as the audience thrilled to a variety of languages, musical items and short plays that were enacted on the Hermannsburg stage at our biennial Supper Theatre last week. From the operatic to the poetic, our music director, Ms Simmonds, with her team of assistants, put on a dazzling show that went from one highlight to the next. Thank you to everyone who contributed, to the audience and to our Grade 9s who,
with Mrs Olivier and their parents, served the evening meal. Friday dawned with misty, cold weather, but a record field of golfers nevertheless braved the conditions at St Cathryn’s Golf Estate for the first day of this year’s HMB Golf Day. The competition continued on Saturday, when the weather changed for the better and golfers enjoyed a sunny day on the course. Thank you once again to Piet and Cathy Nel of St Cathryn’s and their staff for preparing a superb course, and to all the loyal sponsors and
golfers who made our golf day another huge success. Thanks also go to the committee, teachers, parents, friends of HMB and pupils (young and old), who once again contributed their time and effort towards this event - we hope to see you again next year, when we celebrate our 25th HMB Golf Day. As our pupils and teachers enjoy a short break before the last school term of the year begins in earnest, we wish them a relaxing time with family and friends and a safe return.
There is a way to stand out...
Overall winners S. Mairee and D. Fourie receive the floating trophy from M. Marx, principal of Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, at the weekend’s HMB Golf Day.
Kammaland Kapers
These Kammaland Caterpillar tap girls danced beautifully in the ‘Malificent’ ballet concert in Pietermaritzburg this weekend. Well done to Snothando Mkhize, Sagel Govender, Lwandle Zuma, Anitha Mbanjwa and Katelin Francis. We want to thank Midge Joubert, who teaches ballet and tap dancing at Kammaland.

Ladies, love your heart SEPTEMBER is Heart Awareness Month and last year the Heart and Stroke Foundation compared heart disease to the crime statistics and noted that while 49 people were murdered in South Africa every day between 2014 and 2015, but 210 people died from heart disease daily ... with women being a large percentage. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is known as a non-communicable disease (NCD) - the World Health Organisation estimates the burden of NCDs in South Africa to be two to three times higher than in developed countries, accounting for up to 43% of total adult deaths. “The tragedy is that the majority of CVDs are preventable,” says Dr Ramasia (Bonitas Medical). “Preventing and managing CVDs is vital and this means as well as educating health professionals on what to look out for and treatment, we also need women to realise the severity of heart disease and that it is one of their biggest health threats.” • Get active. Aim for at least two-and-a-half hours of moderate activity each week. • Control cholesterol. There are two types - the good kind (HLD) and the bad kind (LDL). High levels of bad cholesterol can clog your arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. • Eat better. Eating the right foods can help you control your weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. • Manage blood pressure by managing your stress. Keeping your blood pressure in a healthy range starts with eating a hearthealthy diet and exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting salt and alcohol, and reducing stress levels. • Maintain a healthy weight. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for CVD. • Reduce blood sugar. Diabetes is a risk factor. Heart disease death rates among adults with diabetes are two to four times higher. • Stop smoking. It’s time to kick the habit. • Know your family history. CVD-related risk factors: • 18% of the population smoke tobacco; • one in three SA adults (33.7%) have hypertension; • 31.3% adults in South Africa are obese; • 40% of women in South Africa are obese; • one in four girls and one in five boys between the ages of two and 14 years are overweight;. - World Heart Federation, The Heart and Stroke Foundation SA, World Health Organisation, World Economic Forum, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle

St David’s Doings
Moms and teachers with the Little Oaks celebrate Heritage Day last week. Moms and teachers came to school in traditional dress for the Heritage Day celebrations at our Little Oaks Kindergarten.
Dr Jane Wessels intrigued the St David’s Grade 2 pupils with her presentation of what veterinary science is all about, using her son Jamie as an example of the similarities between humans and Snoopy, the Jack Russell. The class also studied a blood sample under a microscope, which fascinated them. This is part of the Grade 2 life skills syllabus ‘People helping in the community’.
