In his acceptance speech speaker Khoza thanked everyone who had contributed to the peaceful election and urged councillors to work diligently and be above petty party politics with service delivery being the priority of every councillor. In his closing remarks Mayor Ngubane expressed his wish for a stable council that will address the issue of a growing economy, which will be reflective of all the facets of society and said Greytown needed to expand its productivity thus increasing employment opportunities. The mayor announced he would be calling a public meeting soon to deliver the “State of the Municipality Address” to inform role players of what had already been achieved by the municipality, and their future plans.

Umvoti Mayor reelected for second term UMVOTI residents turned out in full force for the inaugural meeting of the newly elected councillors last Tuesday 23 August in Greytown Town Hall. To cater for the overflow of the public speakers were erected outside for the those in the street. Following the official confirmation of the results of the local government elections by the IEC with 15 ANC councillors, 11 IFP councillors and one DA, the 14 wards have been abuzz with rumours as to whom would be voted in as mayor, speaker, etc. Judging from the enormous presence of police and security forces outside and in the meeting, rumours that there had been threats to disrupt proceedings were taken very seriously. New ANC councillor, Wilson Khoza was elected unopposed as speaker, and called for nominations for the election of the mayor. The outgoing mayor, Thami Ngubane, was nominated by ANC councillors Pamela Zuma and Zandile Ngema – there were no other nominations. Councillor Nomvula Masikane, a new PR councillor from Kranskop was elected unopposed as deputy

bers – three ANC and two IFP, as follows: the mayor and deputy mayor, councillor Thule Gwala (ANC), Cllr Hitler Maharaj (IFP)

and Councillor Silam Zondi (IFP). Four councillors were elected to represent Umvoti at the Umzinyathi District

STOP PRESS: Police and security are investigating a suspected case of arson following the burning down in the early hours of last Saturday of a house in Khomba Road, Enhlalakhale in which Umvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane lived prior to him moving into the municipal mayoral house in Greytown. The mayor was first elected on 20 February, 2015 having been appointed as a PR councillor by the ANC in 2014.

Going, going … gone THERE are some unbelievably stupid individuals in this world. They are the lightfingered ones who have been stealing Jojo tanks from the streets of Greytown, but anyone who has bought one of these stolen tanks “cheap” is equally stupid. Greytown’s water crisis is far from over. For the time being there is water in the system from 5am to 10am, but as stated constantly this is the short-term intervention. However, there are still a number of residents who need to get water from a street Jojo tanks for their daily use. The

long-term intervention is the infamous Craigieburn pipeline – a static Department of Water and Sanitation and Umzinyathi pipe dream from a dam that is almost as low as Lake Merthley. There is optimism that Umvoti will record heavy spring rains, which at this stage, all residents should be praying for. At the time of going to press no one was sure just how many Jojos had been stolen – it could be up to six. A further three were officially removed as the wires holding the tanks to their stands had been cut and obviously the thieves were coming back to remove these three. Most of these illegal removals occurred in the early hours of last Wednesday and Thursday. Field Security patrol came across a bakkie loaded with a Jojo taken from the corner of Shepstone and York streets round about 3am on Thursday. They gave chase as the bakkie sped off on the Dundee road - the tank rolled off as the bakkie disappeared into the distance. The van was returned to the municipality. A bit later, a Field Security guard came across thieves about to load the Jojo tank on the corner of Okes and York streets onto a bakkie. They left the tank on the pavement and drove off. AS part of her year’s reign, Little Miss World, Deante Swart, fund-raises and gets involved with a number of charities. She recently baked cupcakes to sell for “Cupcakes for Hope” a non-profit organisation for children with cancer. The cupcakes were sold at Wembley College and the school’s golf day last Saturday with R2 000 being raised to be donated for children with cancer. Deante registered as a cupcake angel this year to become part of this important NPO. Contact Rochelle on info@cupcakesofhope.org Remember National Cupcake day is 24 September.

THE Kindergarten's latest theme is “under the sea” and the Little Oaks are not only learning about the different creatures living in the sea, but also about ocean conservation and how we can help to protect the vital natural resources that the ocean provides, so since the ocean takes care of us, let's return the favour. Our oceans face unprecedented threats from pollution, other human impacts on marine life and climate change. The Little Oaks learnt how terrible oil pollution is and how difficult it is to get the oil off their ocean creature toys, as they got some handson experience. On the other hand, the ocean provides us with food, water, commerce, recreation, medicines and even the air that we breathe - so let's try to keep the oceans safe.

Shadow Column THE Greytown Gazette publishes a Shadow Column at the end of each month listing events to come during the year. The objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place in order to avoid, as far as possible, two events on the same date. This "double dating" could create problems not only for the organisers, but also for the public who want to support the events.

FOR the past two weeks Form 2 to Form 5 pupils have been carrying out an experiment to see what types, and how many microbes they can find around every-day items. Using a nutrient agar and, anything they find, they have been exploring the school, their homes and even shopping malls to find things that we interact with every day and to see how many and what kinds of microbes are growing on these surfaces. After the Form 5s cultured the bacteria and fungi, they took their petri dishes to the lab and examined their microbes

Therefore an appeal goes out to schools, welfare organisations, churches NGOs, sports bodies, clubs, etc., to submit dates and details of events to the Greytown Gazette for publication. Its so easy, just email greytowngazette@gmail. com or phone 033 413 2310 or fax 033 413 1933. Hermannsburg Happenings THEY sang and played and did themselves and the school proud at the recent Pietermaritzburg Eisteddfod. Our musicians were complimented not only on their performing talent, but also on their courtesy. The following musicians achieved silver awards (75%-84%): Elisabeth Tönsing (piano Grade 3, voice Grade 7), Simon Röhrs (piano Grade 3), Rachel Bourn (piano Grade 5), Clara Kohrs (piano Grade 5), Christel Brüggemann (piano Grade 6), Danielle Schweiger (voice Grade 6), Meike Meyer (voice Grade 6) and Rhonda Christiansen (voice Grade 7). Rachel is in the primary school, while the others are in the high school. Following on from this success, our music department hosted the Hermannsburg Eisteddfod, with Gérard’d du Toit adjudicating, and once again our musicians earned high praise. A total of 17 pupils from the primary and high schools participated in various categories (recorder, piano and voice from music Grade 2 to Grade 7).

While the majority of pupils were awarded silver certificates (75-89%) there were several who were awarded gold certificates (90% and over), which is a wonderful achievement. In sports news, primary school hockey boys have been very busy. At the day-night tournament in New Hanover, the U11 team played hard against Wartburg (3-0), St Patricks’ (4-0), Ixopo (3-0), Wembley (0-2) and New Hanover (1-5), earning themselves a place in the final where they again faced New Hanover. A last-minute goal by New Hanover saw the final end 1-0 and our boys finishing second in the tournament, ahead of Wembley College, St Patrick’s, Wartburg and Ixopo. On Saturday our teams travelled to Treverton, where the U10 team lost only one match as they played Winterton B (0-0), Winterton A (0-3), Underberg (3-0) and Treverton (4-4); the U9 team played Underberg (0-4), Winterton A (0-5), Treverton (2-2) and Winterton B (2-2).

Reading to Learn Africa MiniConference READING to Learn (RtL) South Africa is to host a one-day conference on Monday 3 October in Pietermaritzburg. Reading to Learn trains teachers across all phases, learning areas and languages in the RtL methodology to enable them to develop their pupils’ abilities to independently learn from reading. Originally developed in Australia, over the past 20 years it has spread to many different countries and is being used in South Africa, especially in the Midlands in rural and urban schools. The programme will focus on two

main areas: • Presentations by practising RtL teachers across a range of school contexts, from urban to rural, sharing their experiences using RtL in their classroom. • Practical workshops on different aspects of the RtL methodology to give teachers an insight into the methodology and it implementation in classrooms. For further information, contact Debbie Avery rtlconference2016@gmail.com or avery.deb236@gmail.com or Mike Hart hartm@lantic.net or 072 588 8521).

If you don’t report it, you support it CRUEL, irresponsible, anti-social individuals in various parts of South Africa are making money through organised dog fights in which two dogs are incited to fight to the death or sustain such horrendous injuries they cannot survive. But not only are the dog owners responsible for this evil so are the "sick" people who support, watch and bet on the outcome of such fights. In South African law it is a crime to be involved, own, keep or train animals to be used for fighting. It is a crime to incite animals to fight. It is a crime to allow fighting on property owned or rented. It is a crime to promote animal

fighting for money fighting is a developing underground activity in urban and rural areas in South Africa and animal abuse has close links to other criminal activities. The wonders of salt SALT is an amazing invention. In the past, before we had freezers and other conservatives, salt was used to preserve meat for long periods of time. Salt has helped human civilisations to grow and thrive. Salt was so important that some civilisations even used it as a form of currency. People would travel thousands of kilometres to get salt and bring it back home. Luckily, today salt is readily available and everyone can use it. We mostly use it now to flavour our food. However, salt has a lot of incredible uses that most people don’t even know about. We can use salt everyday around the house for many things. Here are just some of the ways: • Remove grease and stains from a pan. • Clean your bath. • Remove sticky residue from under your iron. • Easily clean up a wet egg from the floor. • Quickly put out a oil fire in the kitchen. • Give brooms a long life. A new straw broom will last longer if you soak its bristles in a bucket of hot, salty water. After about 20 minutes,

Salt has a lot of incredible uses that most people don’t even know about. remove the broom and let it dry. • Remove wine from carpet. While the red wine is still wet, pour some white wine on it to dilute the colour. Then clean the spot with a sponge and cold water. Sprinkle the area with salt and wait about 10 minutes. Now vacuum. • Remove watermarks from wood. Mix 1 teaspoon salt with a few drops of water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste onto the ring with a soft cloth or sponge and work it

over the spot until it’s gone. • Restore a sponge. To restore sponges to a pristine state, soak them overnight in a solution of about 1/4 cup salt per 1 litre of water. • Relieve stings, bites. Stung by a bee? Immediately wet the sting and cover with salt. It will lessen the pain and reduce the swelling. • For relief from the itching of mosquito bites, soak the area in salt water, then apply vegetable oil.

WE had a very busy weekend at the club - Happy Hour on Friday and Wembley golf on Saturday. Starting with the Happy Hour winners, also a fluke of note, both winners were husband and wife. Aaron Marinus and Michelle Powell took home the money and the Chivas. Nadine Fouche and Jackie Chapman won the consolation prizes. Thank you to Leon Taljaard for sponsoring the meal and for including us in celebrating his 60th birthday. Wembley Golf Day once again was a huge success with 72 golfers playing. Thank you to Dieter Meyer and his PA team for the efforts in making this day a success. The winners were M. Msomi and B. Zuma on 47 points. Second was R. Tarr and D. Pieterse with 45 points. The next three slots had the same score and were counted out - M. Caldicott and S. Muna, T. Muller and M. Muller, R. Misselhorn and R. Jeffery all ended on 44 points.

PATRICK and Damien O’Sullivan, and Ian Stanley from Mooi River, teamed up with a Bishopstowe club to compete in this year’s SA Championships in a dry and dusty Bethal club. Bishopstowe were eventually runners-up in the A Division, but managed to play some enterprising polocrosse over the weekend. In recognition of this Patrick was awarded the silver tray Paul Oldfield trophy for the most deserving number. More good news for Umvoti Polocrosse is that Jacquie Minnaar has been selected as a travelling reserve for the national South African side to tour Australia next April. Congratulations to Jacquie, who is following her mother Caroline’s footsteps, with regards to the SA selection.
