A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

ORE than 1 500 elderly women will march through Durban on Saturday morning 16 July to highlight their rights and concerns on the eve of the 2016 International Aids Conference (#AIDS 2016). The gogos from the Upper Highway and Valley of 1000 Hills will join gogos from across Durban to raise awareness of the challenges they face and the need for better recognition and support. Gogos are frequently the sole breadwinners for their families and shoulder the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren, many of whom have been impacted by HIV/ Aids. One who will be marching on Saturday is 68 year old Nokuthula Vezi (name changed) from Molweni. Nokuthula has a passion for raising awareness about preventing HIV infection, having lost five of her 10 children to HIV/Aids, and seven of her grandchildren. She has to rely on her small pension and selling secondhand clothes to support her remaining 13 grandchildren and daughter. “Once I knew that my children had died one by one from Aids, I did all I

It is something very special.” Organising the march is just one of the logistical challenges facing Hact and its partners. Twenty-one buses will have to transport the gogos to Durban from 17 different communities to get the Gogos to the start on
time. At the end of the march the gogos will present a statement to government at a special ceremony at Durban’s International Convention Centre in the presence of the UNAids executive director, Michel Sidibé, and other high profile guests. Also marching will be the gogos who took plart in the recent Gogolympics. Gogos from Hact’s dressmaking school will also be marching. More than 60 gogos a year attend the school in KwaNyuswa, where they learn to make cushions, blankets, dresses and school uniforms - skills to help them to make a small income. “We work alongside more than 2 000 Gogos across the Valley of 1000 Hills. We visit them at home and encourage them to look after their health and join support groups that take part in income-generating activities,” said Cwengi Myeni, Gogo Support Group manager at the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust. “We want to bring the rights and achievements of these selfless ladies to the attention of our leaders and the world. They are the backbone of our communities, but this isn’t often recognised.” - Supplied.
Hitandrun leaves man critical, Shongweni A MAN believed to be in his thirties, was critically injured after an apparent hit-and-run on the Shongweni main road in Shongweni last week. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the man lying in a sugar cane field a short distance away from the road. On assessment, paramedics found that the man had sustained numerous injuries to his head, arms and to his legs. The man was also found to be suffering from severe hypothermia. Paramedics began their treatment, providing the patient with advanced life support while gradually warming him. Once treated, the patient was transported to Albert Lithuli Hospital. It is believed that the man had been lying in the bushes for some time, before he was discovered by members of the public. The vehicle that apparently collided with the pedestrian was not found on the scene. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations. - Supplied.

POLICE confirmed that a man doused himself with petrol in the Molweni satellite police station charge office, threatening to set himself alight if he wasn’t given an ID. “A 36-year-old man came to the police station with petrol and poured it onto himself in the Molweni satellite police station charge office,” said SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwani. The desperate man also held officers hostage, and suffered a gunshot wound on top of the burn wounds he
inflicted on himself. “He burnt himself and tried to burn a vehicle that was parked inside the premises,” Zwane added. When other police officers arrived to rescue their colleagues, the man tried to grab one of the constables, but was wounded when an officer fired a shot in his direction. He was treated by paramedics thereafter before being taken to hospital. Due to his injuries the man is yet to be charged. - Supplied.

The Hlaudi swagger RANJENI MUNUSAMY
I
F there is one person who has learnt how to wield power, it is SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng. South Africa has had many powerful politicians, trade unionists and business people, but Motsoeneng has emerged out of obscurity to become South Africa’s most colourful and influential media personality. This is not because of any particular achievements in the field of broadcasting but because of his inflated sense of importance and his ability to keep his grip on the SABC in spite of a damning public protector report and court judgments against him. Motsoeneng has embarked on an unapologetic mission to turn the SABC into a pro-government propaganda
machine, going to the extent of banning negative coverage of President Jacob Zuma because “he deserves a certain degree of respect”. Motsoeneng previously issued a decree that the SABC should broadcast a 70% quota of positive news in its bulletins, irrespective of what is actually happening in the country. Recently, Motsoeneng banned coverage of violent protest action on television news bulletins. Journalists who questioned this decision were suspended, sparking a backlash from the media fraternity and media freedom institutions. This has not altered Motsoeneng’s swagger. He believes himself to be invincible and is dismissive of whatever criticism comes his way. Following the sudden resignation of the acting group chief executive officer, Jimi Matthews, Motsoeneng waved off suggestions of a crisis at the SABC. “Just because one or two people cough here, it does not mean we are all
sick. All is well here at the SABC; we are not all sick,” he said at a media briefing last week. He was even more dismissive of criticism of the SABC’s new editorial policy of censoring negative news and violent protests.
year, to sing praise songs about themselves. His pomposity knows no bounds. South Africans once had to watch a group of religious leaders praying over Motsoeneng on all the television news bulletins of the day. How is this news? In one of his most bizarre acts of vanity, Motsoeneng said he wanted SABC camera operators to be retrained as they “make him look shorter than he really is”. Motsoeneng has been given free reign at the SABC for far too long, supposedly because he has high-level political protection. After allowing Motsoeneng to run the public broadcaster like a feudal lord, the ANC finally spoke up this week. ANC chief whip and chairperson of the party’s communication’s subcommittee Jackson Mthembu lashed out at the decision to censor the news and the poor leadership at the SABC. “I can assure you, at the highest managerial level we are lacking. That
is why we keep on moving from one crisis to another,” Mthembu said. “Truth be told, we are not happy at the expertise the SABC has at the highest level. “You need to ensure that we have people who know how to run an institution as big as the SABC. You can’t bring any Tom, Dick or Harry to run the SABC.” The SABC board hit back at the ANC, disputing that the management is not adequately educated, skilled and experienced to run the public broadcaster. This is despite it being proven that Motsoeneng does not even possess a matric certificate. The situation at the SABC is no different from other state-owned companies that are moribund through bad leadership. Motsoeneng was left to his own devices for far too long and allowed to fashion the SABC like his own kingdom. Those who have only woken now to the fact that a megalomaniac is in charge of the public broadcaster will battle to dislodge him. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journal ist and commentator for the Daily Maver ick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com.
well-marked path to the bottom of the falls. At this point you can appreciate the true beauty of the thundering falls as you look up at the sheer sandstone cliffs from where you had earlier peeped at the falls. Do not attempt to walk up the falls even at times when the water volume is low. The path in the vicinity of the falls is well known for the abundance of Cri-
num moorei or the Natal Lily, with its large, white to pinkish red, open tubular flowers it makes a beautiful show during the flowering period from October to January. This path is a cul-de-sac so you will have to retrace your steps to get back to the start point. Difficulty - the path was recently upgraded and made safer but the descent and ascent in the gorge make this a challenging walk not suitable for people with walking difficulties – allow a total of three hours. After allowing Mot soeneng to run the public broadcast er like a feudal lord, the ANC finally spoke up this week. “What is this censorship thing? It is English so I don’t know it. ‘Gorging’ with Kloof Conservancy THE Krantzkloof Nature Reserve has nine stunning waterfalls, but the “big daddy” of them all, on pure volume of water, is the main Kloof Falls near the Kloof Falls picnic site. these are unfenced view spots and the drops are severe. Continue along the Molweni Trail and shortly after you cross the Ronald’s Kloof Weir the path splits, take the left path, which drops very quickly to the Molweni River. Once at the river follow the path upstream. Initially the path is on the east side of the river but after about 500m you cross the Molweni and follow the
Municipal accounting chaos I AM baffled by the municipality’s accounting system, which seems to have many shortcomings. There have been changes in ownership of units belonging to our complex. Think of the future IT is easier to destroy property than to build. Poor service delivery from the government is no excuse for vandalising property. There will be a time when we will have nothing to show the future generations if people cannot change their be-
haviour. Destroying properties does not benefit anyone and has nothing to do with service delivery. On August 3, we go to the polls. Let’s vote with the future generations in mind. We need to reflect on the current
state of this wonderful country before we destroy it. International investors see us as a violent country. LEROY SNYMAN

‘Paying it forward’ ethos in action FEVER REPORTER HAMISHA Bramdaw, Sithokozile Secondary representative, recently appealed for sports shoes for the netball side after she noticed the team had been playing barefoot. “The team are a strong side, having had an exceptionally good season, and recently won the Archie Gumede Cup,” she said. Although BBF Safety Group (BBF) had allocated cash for the CSI budget for the year, they were determined to help. Bronwyn Owen, a BBF staff member’s wife, approached her daughter’s school, Maris Stella, who agreed to buy and donate 19 pairs of
sports shoes. In return, BBF donated Bova safety boots to the estate staff at Maris Stella School. “What a wonderful example of the power of working together to positively contribute towards making a difference within our community,” says Vanessa Ronald, BBF senior brand manager. Hamisha thanked BBF for their assistance and Maris Stella for their donation. “Our thanks to BBF for their support and Maris Stella for their donation. The netball team are overjoyed with their new sports shoes.” Paige Owen, a Grade 6 pupil, the Maris Stella representative, handed the donation over. “I wish the Sithokozile netball girls all the best for their upcoming season.” Maris Stella principal, Joan Schmidt, said they are delighted to have been able to assist. “It really is such a blessing to see the power of the ‘pay-it-forward’ ethos in action.” Each Sithokozile recipient sent a thank you card to each Maris Stella pupil. “What a beautiful, sincere gesture of heartfelt appreciation,” says Ronald. - Supplied. RAIL runners, walkers, outdoor enthusiasts, families and friends are invited to the Trewirgie Challenge Trail at Trewirgie Farm in the beautiful countryside lying between Baynesfield and Richmond on Sunday 17 July in aid of SA Riding for the Disable Organisation (Sarda). The Trewirgie Challenge Trail goes back to 2013 when Barbara Seele (Trewirgie Farm family member) organised it as part of her fundraising commitments as a participant in the Mongol Derby. Seele selected Sarda Durban as her charity beneficiary in South Africa and successfully completed the Mongol Derby and has continued to support Sarda Durban every year since through the Trewirgie Challenge Trail. Trail participants are invited to run, walk or stroll as appropriate. There are two routes, the longer and more challenging is approx 17-18km long and goes up, up and up, then down, down and down amidst forests, rivers, mountains and stunning views. The shorter 5km route is walker and family friendly but still an achievement when you cross end line. Registration opens at 7.30am, start time for both distances is 8.30am. There is no registration fee as such but donations welcome (cash at registration) for the benefit of Sarda Durban. Linda Wilson volunteer of Sarda said that everyone is encouraged to

Construction of Western Aqueduct continues according to plan DURBAN’S largest ever bulk water pipeline, the Western Aqueduct (WA), is making steady progress and reaching important milestones. Head of eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS), Ednick Msweli, said that the WA would have a significant impact on the future development of the eThekwini region. “With unemployment at record highs and a need to fast track the establishment of industry that will beneficiate commodities and manufacture for export in order to both grow the regional economy and create jobs, the provision of good water infrastructure has never been more important. With the completion of the WA, Durban will have some of the best water infrastructure in the country,” he said. The WA - which was divided into two phases – will bring water into Durban from the Midmar dam and recently constructed Springrove Dam. It will significantly strengthen the capacity of bulk water supply and meet the needs of the greater eThekwini region for the next 30 years. The first phase of the Western Aqueduct, which measures 20km and stretches from the Umlaas Road Reservoir to Inchanga, was commissioned at the end of 2012. The R1,8-billion second phase of the Western Aqueduct which continues from Inchanga to Ntuzuma is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in 2017. Martin Bright Project Manager for the Western Aqueduct second phase explained that the massive second phase had been divided into a number of related contracts. The first two contracts comprise of a 14 kilometre stretch of pipeline ex-
tending from Inchanga to Alverstone Station and then on to Ashley Drive in Hillcrest have been completed by Cycad Construction and WK Construction respectively. Both these contractors have already moved off site. Msweli said that the eThekwini Municipality was pleased that both projects had been completed and met stringent quality standards. As a result of the severe drought being experienced lately, the rehabilitation of the areas where the pipeline was laid, has been delayed but completed under difficult circumstances. Work on the 25km stretch of the pipeline which extends from Ashley Drive to Ntuzuma which is being carried out by Esor Construction, is progressing well and is on schedule for completion in September 2017. He said that a 7km branch line to Tshelimnyama is being carried out by Esor Construction and is on track for completion towards the end of 2016.This runs along Haygarth Road and under the N3 to the water reservoir in Tshelimnyama and this pipeline will alleviate water shortages in this area. The large Ashley Drive Break Pressure Tank was designed by the Western Aqueduct Consultants Joint Venture has been completed by ICON Construction. This 20 million litre Break Pressure Tank has just won the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) Award for Technical Excellence at a formal ceremony on the 10 June 2016 at the SAICE Durban Branch Awards. In the submission entry the following aspects of this project were highlighted; that it showcases the civil engineer’s leadership and management skills, not to mention technical competence, in
bringing together a team of specialists in the disciplines of civil, structural, hydraulic, geotechnical, roadwork, mechanical, electrical, electronic and telecommunications engineering, as well as other related fields such as environmental, heritage, security and planning. A second reservoir – known as the Wyebank Break Pressure Tank - is also well on the way to completion during the third quarter of 2017. This break pressure tank has also been designed by Royal Haskoning DHV and is currently being built by ICON Construction. Msweli thanked eThekwini residents for their patience both during the construction of the completed sections of the pipeline and during on-going construction. “Unfortunately, traffic disruption will still be felt as a result of work in Kloof, Wyebank and Kwadabeka. The section of the road M13 off ramp to Willingdon Road is due to commence in July 2016. The temporary railway crossing at the Kloof Station will be terminated at the end of June and traffic will revert to flowing along Church Street as the pipeline along Church Street is now complete,” he said. Work will continue along Wyebank Road for the foreseeable future. Road surfaces will remain temporarily unsurfaced but once sufficiently long stretches of road have been completed, these will be resurfaced. “We would like to urge residents to continue to be patient as this mammoth project draws to an end. “ It is extremely complex and often requires us to work on a number of different segments of the pipeline at the same time. “We also need to co-ordinate our operations with those of other service providers who often need to relocate the likes of electricity and fibre optic cables,” he explained. - Supplied

URING the week Kearsney College will play host to what is arguably the world’s biggest school rugby tournament - the combined 2016 U18 Coca-Cola Craven and Academy Week. It will be the first time the two events have been held simultaneously, at the same venue to select the SA schools team. The 44 teams from across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe – an estimated 1 260 players and support staff – bring with them family, friends and supporters keen to watch South Africa’s top young rugby players in action. These thousands of supporters, as well as SuperSport’s daily broadcasts, are a wonderful opportunity to showcase our beautiful region. It also boosts the local economy, with hospitality venues, coffee shops, restaurants, shops
and places of attraction that will benefit from the influx of supporters who have booked into accommodation from Pietermaritzburg to the South Coast, Durban and Umhlanga through to Ballito. While the three KZN teams have already moved into Kearsney College for a pre-tournament camp, the remaining 41 teams start arriving this weekend. The event runs from Monday 11 July to Saturday 16 July. Craven Week games will be played on the Stott Field and Academy Week fixtures on the AH Smith Oval at Kearsney. SuperSport will broadcast all weekday games live, as well as Saturday’s final. The 44 teams are being accommodated at Kearsney College, Glenwood, DHS, Port Natal and Maritzburg College. You’ll also be pleased to know that we are currently considering two new exciting eateries to occupy the old Mr Price building and will be sure to notify you once these restaurants have confirmed that they will be joining our Centre. Winter may be cold, but we can’t help but get a warm buzz every time we think about how far we’ve come. Once again, we would like to thank you for your patience and your continued support. We hope that you enjoy the new additions, are looking forward to the changes that are still to come and that you are as thrilled as we are for the future of Hillcrest Corner.

Villagers hosted Richards Bay Rugby club over the weekend >> Another victory for the lads
T
HE Land Rover Durban Hillcrest Villagers hosted Richards Bay Rugby club for the top of the table clash. The Villagers 2nd XV took on Rich-
ards Bay for the runners up spot in the league. The match got off to a fast start with Villagers running in a couple of quick tries to take the energy out of their opponents. However Richards
Bay struck back with an opportunistic try halfway through the 1st half only for Villagers to counter straight from the kick off with a brilliant solo effort from flyhalf Cliffy Bridge. Richards Bay had the last say in the half, scoring off an error from the hosts to bring the half time score to 33-10 to Villagers. The 2nd half was a scrappy affair
as the heat and dryness took its toll, with only a try apiece, the standout being a long range effort from Hillcrest, with Bridge and Cian Waugh combining to score. The standout players and deserved man of the match awards went to Cian Waugh (backs) and Dwayne Frenzel (forwards). The 2nd set the tone for the 1st team
to take the field. The build up to this match was an intense affair, as Richards bay had secured the league victory the week before, Villagers was out with a point to prove. With ex Springbok and Sharks scrumhalf, Craig Davidson, sharing his experience and knowledge at the jersey handout on Thursday night, the team was ready for a massive onslaught. The match got off to a tense start with both teams trying to minimise errors and hold on to possession. Richards Bay drew first blood as they slotted a penalty with their first visit to the Villagers 22, only for the hosts to hit back, stringing countless phases together for Alex Klewinghaus to dot down next to the poles. Richards Bay dominated possession in the middle part of the half, finally scoring an unconverted try in the far corner through sustained pressure, taking the half time score to 8-7 to the visitors. A rousing half time talk from the seniors in the Villagers camp got them fired up as they took to the field with renewed vigour. A flurry of tries took the score to 22-8 with 10 minutes to play. Richards’s bay gave it one last attempt, as they managed to snatch back a try, making it a tense final few minutes. However the stout Villagers defence, a hallmark of theirs this season was up for it, as they closed the game off for a solid 22-15 victory. Although Richards Bay won the league, the Villagers 1st XV can be proud of the fact that they had only lost one match this season, with only bonus points separating them and the league winners. For his tremendous leadership, Brian ‘’Cappy’’ Lewis was awarded the forwards man of the match, and Brandon ‘’Bunny’’ Waugh the backline man of the match (a great day for the Waugh brothers). Try Scorers: Brian Lewis, Alex Klewinghaus, Cian Waugh and Andries Botha The Land Rover Durban Hillcrest Villagers now shift their focus as they set to defend their Junior Murray Cup title.- Mike De Kock

rience THE simple yet eloquent variation on a beaded Zulu Love Letter that symbolises our Thousand Hills Experience speaks volumes about the myriad delights of this wondrous terrain. While pointing directly at the seemingly endless, signature rolling landscape, the layering of hill and valley hints at treasures lying hidden from view until the next corner is turned. Unmistakably ethnic motifs denote easy access and a friendly welcome to authentic, indigenous local culture that beckons with the promise of 'Africa on your doorstep'. Vast blue skies form a true reflection of the Zulu people whose name translates as 'Heaven' - although it has to be said that our occasional mistshrouded days must surely have reminded early Colonial pioneers of the eerie Scottish Highlands! The trains run from Kloof Station (Stokers Arms) to and from Inchanga Station, on the last Sunday of each month along the edge of the pictur-

The line was built in the late 1800s and is one of the oldest active railway lines in South Africa today. At Inchanga Station visitors will find the popular Inchanga Station Craft Market where many hand crafted items can be found. Numerous food outlets help to satisfy the weary traveller. One can also join the train for the 10:30am departure from Inchanga for Kloof where one can sit down to fine pub fare and an ice cold beer at the Stokers Arms Station Restaurant, and still be in time for the 12:30 train returning to Inchanga.
