ENJAMIN Dube, Khaya Mthethwa, Dube Brothers, Ntokozo Mbambo, Andile KaMajola, Ayanda Ntanzi and The Revelation will share the stage at the 6th uMgungundlovu In his Presence pre-Easter gospel celebration event this Saturday, 19 March, at the Royal

Showgrounds from 5pm. The much-awaited gospel event will start with Bishop Vusi Dube, Apostle Sihle Ngidi, Apostle Nathi Zondi, Apostle Neo Rathebe, Reverend Mveli Mkhize, Pastor Sabelo Manyathi, Pastor Trevor Phoswa and Pastor Zamo Biyase giving praise and preaching about Jesus’ Seven Words on the Cross (Amazwi Ayisikhombisa). Mthethwa said he looks forward

to entertaining the crowd and sharing the stage with fellow musicians. “I’m mostly looking forward to a great crowd and great fellowship. Pietermaritzburg is one of my favourite places. “I’m also looking forward to sharing the stage with my friend Ntokozo Mbambo and the legend himself, Pastor Benjamin Dube. “I’ll be performing a few of my

songs from my first album, Ushilo Wena, Settle for Less and Vula to name a few and of course some songs will be from my new album The Dawn, which will be released next month,” said Mthethwa. The event, uMgungundlovu In His Presence, is made possible through the partnership between OGatsheni Entertainment and uMgungundlovu District Municipality, and sponsored

lids, to mention few requirements. The bylaw prohibits the keeping of more than 10 poultry in a township or 100 poultry on agricultural zoned area without permit and that poultry keepers should ensure that the poultry do not disturb or hinder the comfort, convenience, peace and quiet of the public. The bylaw also prohibits the keeping of wild animals without approval from nature conservation authorities and that no person may keep animals which are a dan ger to people, without permit from an environmental officer, which include and not limited to large, carnivorous, venomous snakes, spiders and scorpions. The bylaw also makes it mandatory for

the sterilisation of all bitches, except those registered and licensed as breeding animals. As a bylaw, the document is expected to be open for public comment at an appropriate time proposed by council. Culture expert Ndela Ntshangase said the bylaws have been put in place to ensure health standards. “When people slaughter animals there are those who disregard health standards. What the municipality is planning to intro duce is for health and hygienic reasons. Notifying them that you will slaughter is not a crime because in the rural areas the same custom is practised. This is not something new. However, refusing people to slaughter might be a problem,” said Ntshangase.

Notify municipality before slaughtering NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com FROM the keeping and slaughter of chickens, pigs, cows, goats and sheep, residents under the Msunduzi Municipality residents may have to forward their appli cations to the local authorities for approval as part of the Public Health bylaws by the municipality’s environmental health unit. The 28page report on the keeping and slaughtering of animals is under the community services portfolio committee. At this stage the committee had recommended that the public health bylaws involving the keeping of animals and slaughter of animals be reviewed and

that comments be submitted to the Executive Committee (Exco). This bylaw has not yet appeared before Exco and therefore has not been noted or adopted as a draft. A bylaw is a law made by a local authority. The report states that people who wish to slaughter an animal need to notify the municipality in writing within 14 days prior to the event and will not be allowed to keep such animal prior to slaughtering for longer than 24 hours. Moreover, as soon as the animal has been slaughtered and flayed the slaughter man shall clearly mark the carcass with the registered mark of the owner of the animal. The bylaw also allows for inspection of the meat. If meat is found

to be unfit for human consumption, the meat shall be seized by authorised officers. The report states that if it is gathered that the keeping of an authorised animal, such as poultry or rabbits, causes nuisance or danger to the public health, the health official may cancel the permit or prohibit the keeping of such poultry or rabbits. According to the report cattle, horses, mules and donkeys could only be kept in stables or enclosures that have every wall and partition constructed of brick, stone, concrete or durable material, internal wall should have smooth brick or durable surface with a smooth finish, enough water for drinking and that all feeds be kept in a rodentproof storeroom with close fitting

Mzansi Theatre Projects Advancement members (back, from left) Aluncedo Cetshwayo, Zethu Ngubane, Fezidingo Kibi, Ndumizo Mazibuko, (front) Ayanda Mkhize, Nothando Makhathini and Sphamandla Mkhize, are passionate about acting and currently use an RDP house for rehearsals.

AVING no support for many years, a group of young actors in KwaPata have been forced to use an RDP house as a development arena for acting and for the general development of the youth. The chairman of Mzansi Theatre Projects Advancement Ndumiso Mazibuko said the house owner allowed them to use it for community purposes and for introducing theatre to the KwaPata community. Mzansi Theatre Projects Advancement is a theatre company meant to develop talent in theatre, dance, drama and poetry. “The whole of last year we never performed in Pietermaritzburg because we cannot afford booking fees. Theatre is dead in Pietermaritzburg, especially in townships. We use the RDP [house] as a practice area and every now and then we invite the community to watch our plays for free. This is how we are introducing theatre to our community. We have submitted our proposals to various arts organisations and

departments, but nothing has been forthcoming. When we were growing up there were a lot of actors who were involved in theatre work. The numbers have declined with time. Sometimes we get together and host dialogues on how we can better our lives,” said Mazibuko. The theatre was officially opened on 4 March and various acts by local actors were showcased. Poetry and dance classes will only start next month. For now the theatre is offering drama and music.” On the guest list was Roel Twinjstra, project manager at Twist Theatre Projects Development, Gcina Mdluli, founder and director of Umphithi Theatre management projects, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Nazo from Youth Ignite Ambassadors and Xolani Dlongolo the coordinator at Twist Projects. Mazibuko said that as a youth group they also aim to introduce children to theatre and drama. “A healthy theatre industry starts at primary school level. Most public schools do not have drama, music and dance as part of their curriculum. We are prepared to change that,” said Mazibuko. Nothando Makhathini, a

member of Mzansi, has been acting since Grade 5 as a pupil at Khethindlelenhle Primary. She won best actor awards at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg for three consecutive years and was honoured in Zimbabwe as the best actor. “On Sundays we read books to children and they role-play the script. In this manner we make reading interesting and practical,” she said. Another Mzansi member, Fezidingo Kibi, finished matric last year and now focuses on developing his acting skills. He has performed at the Botanical Gardens and at the Winston Churchill Theatre.

Those who wish to have their shows staged at Mzansi Studio Theatre or for those who wish to assist the group, can contact Mazibuko on 078 638 2530 or 061 491 2412.

Lawrence said the city was receiving “a lot of negative publicity” following those articles. However, Ndlela disagreed. “People say we should get our house in order before we blame them. What is our longterm plan?” asked Lawrence. Acting municipal manager Boniwe Zulu said the city had presented its “war on water leaks” plan a few months ago. “We are not running away from our responsibility, but the community also has a responsibility to save water.”

IETERMARITZBURG artist, Scelo “Selloh Zikode” Maphumulo, has teamed up with Yizo Yizo star and actor Ernest “Chester” Msibi as they are recording a track Ney Ney, which they said will keep South Africa dancing. Msibi’s stage name is “Vuvu”. Maphumulo said the song will be released as a single and there are plans to shoot its music video before August. “We took inspiration from Silento’s Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) song, which became an anthem on radio stations across the world. We are twisting the song and infusing a South African flavour. “The track will keep people dancing in 2016,” said Maphumulo. Maphumulo, from Edendale, said from an early age he knew he wanted to be part of the music industry. “I have been in the music industry for a long time. I have worked with award-winning gospel artists - Sfiso Ncwane, Lindani Gumede, Sgwili and Babo. “Vuvu and I started working together this year and I am happy with the progress. “There are many plans which we will execute in the entertainment industry. We are also planning to shoot a movie in Pietermaritzburg,” said Maphumulo.

Lay Centre area families evicted NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com ABOUT five Edendale families have been left homeless amid a wet and overcast weekend following an interdict by the Sheriff of the Court. The families were evicted from their mud houses in the Lay Centre area as, according to court papers, they have been living there unlawfully. Their houses were destroyed during the course of last week. One of the affected residents, Mthokozisi Nene, said that they have approached the ward councillor to help them but to no avail. “We have been living here since 1995 and no one has ever issued us letters saying we are on someone’s property. We have been living here for so long. We thought the land was now ours. What are we going to do now? What will happen to our families?” asked Nene. Thembi Phoswa said her child has had to skip school because they don’t have a home. “The bed, which I still pay monthly instalments for, is missing and all my glasses and pots were all over the floor when they kicked us out. “We don’t know the Sheriff of the Court documents they are talking about and we never signed them acknowledging receiving the letters. We need help,” said Phoswa. Efforts to get hold of the property owners were unsuccessful as calls rang unanswered. Edendale ward councillor Pat Jaca said he knows nothing about this issue and that a title deed, which states the rightful owner of the property, is what will protect them from eviction.

KZN pupils to showcase talent >> The Old Mutual Ubuntu Earth Festival competition aims to encourage pupils to learn about environmental and social issues

P

UPILS from 40 KZN schools will take part in a schools version of “South Africa’s Got Talent” in Pietermaritzburg tomorrow, 18 March. Titled the “Old Mutual Ubuntu

Earth Festival”, the competition aims to encourage pupils to learn about environmental and social issues, as well as educate an audience, through performance. The event is presented by Wildlands and sponsored by Old Mutual. The competing pupils will choose a category they want to perform in (song – solo, group or choral or poetry – classic or freestyle, cover versions and original music is encouraged), and will be judged on how they weave in messaging around preserving and protecting the environment, as well as addressing social chall enges, into their

performance. The message makes up 50% of each schools score and is essentially what makes this event unique. The Ubuntu Earth Festival model is structured around two complimentary interventions - a talent search (auditions) during which about 40 local schools will be invited to submit Ubuntu Earth performances for adjudication. The 40 performances will be whittled down to between 10 and 15, and those acts are the ones that will take part in the regional festival. Old Mutual sponsorship manager Bandile Mngoma said: “The Ubuntu Earth Festival is an excit-

not top of mind for the youth of today. “This really is a special competition in that scholars are given a platform to simultaneously expose their talents and make a difference.” The competition sees the overall winning acts walking away with R5 000 (each) in school improvement vouchers, a mentorship from a professional in the music industry and airtime on a local radio station. HE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is asking the public to donate blood urgently, Pietermaritzburg SANBS public relations practitioner, Khulekani Zuma told Maritzburg Echo. “At the moment the supply is at 1,1%, enough for one day only, and with supplies being divided between those who need a daily supply and medical cases in hospital, there is not enough left for unexpected accidents,’’ said Zuma. With the Easter holidays around the corner and the high rate of road accidents during this time, the SANBS is concerned there will not be

a sufficient blood supply especially because schools close on Friday. “Seventy five to 80% of the blood supply comes from schools around the province. So schools will be closed there will be an extreme shortage of blood. The SANBS is to hold donating campaigns at shopping centres, malls, churches and in central town. People are urged to donate blood, especially those with blood type ‘O’ as this is the most in demand blood type,” said Zuma. Donors have to maintain a healthy lifestyle, weight 50 kilograms or more and be 16 years of age and above. For more information, contact the SANBS centre on 0800 11 9031 or Zuma at 033 264 3612 or 082 328 9587.

There are two particular problems often encountered by people with Asian skin, “especially those of Indian and Malaysian origin dark circles around the eyes, and dark pigmented scarring, resulting from acne and chicken pox. In order to treat this condition, one needs to control the deposition of pigmentation and the distribution of the pigment in the skin. There are limited ways to do this, and it may take many months, or even years, before the skin is as light as one would like it to be. Never be persuaded to have a deep peel, which may initially give a rapid change in colour, but unfortunately, a few months later, generally ends up causing darker marks than before. Scars on darker skins do not respond to many of the treatment that are used on pale skin, such as dermabrasion, micro-dermabrasion, and laser treatment, because the pigmentation problem may be aggravated. Our treatment has been formulated to treat pigmentation of darker skin tones and features seven different masques. The treatment starts with facial wash, followed by Anti-Dark Spot Serum, Blemishperfection Genti-Calm Gel and Day and Night creams. The active ingredient in this range is melacetyl, which has a dispersing agent acting on melanin production and sensitivity to the skin.

HE knives are out for Msunduzi Municipality mayor Chris Ndlela. The ANC Youth League in the region took a swipe at Ndlela for not condemning municipal staff unrest that started late last year, which has intensified since the municipality made clear its intention to suspend municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi. Nkosi was suspended last Friday under a cloud of a maladministration probe by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube. In a statement last Wednesday, league regional secretary Thembinkosi Zondi demanded that Ndlela distance himself from the acts of those who have been protesting and “insulting senior political office bearers in the municipality”. “Unsigned letters with filthy language are frequently distributed to workers insulting senior leaders. “We never heard Ndlela being insulted even on a single count as a person at the helm of running the municipality. “Does this suggest that he is part of the instigators? If not, why he [sic] never came out to condemn this shameful act?” he asked. Zondi accused Ndlela of being part of a plot that “co-opted” expanded public works

programme workers and contract workers to influence the outcome of the provincial ANC conference by buying delegates through job placements in the municipality. Zondi said the suspended Nkosi and senior members of council were also part of that plot. The protesting workers have claimed that Nkosi was ousted because he had fallen out of favour with both the regional and provincial ANC leadership, after supporting Premier Senzo Mchunu’s unsuccessful bid to retain his position as the ANC chairperson. The workers also claimed Nkosi had already finalised placements in the municipality, but was stopped by the ANC leaders who wanted to put their “comrades” in those positions. However, Zondi said the protest by contract workers had been organised to insult deputy mayor Thobani Zuma, HR portfolio committee chairperson Jabu Ngubo and ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma. The league said it welcomed Nkosi’s suspension as he had become “a centre of divisions in the municipality”, and called on the ANC to investigate and discipline those of its councillors who had “boycotted” last week’s council sitting in protest against the municipal manager’s suspension. Ndlela said he preferred not to respond to the allegations “for now”.

‘We never heard Ndlela being insulted even on a single count as a person at the helm of running the municipality’

ICT, broadband rollout for Zamazulu High

T

HE deputy minister of telecommunications and postal services, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize visited Zamazulu High School in Imbali to roll out information and communications technology (ICT) and broadband there and to Esiqongweni Secondary and Mehlokazulu High School. The minister attended the meeting with the Department of Education HOD Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, Shaun Emslie and Patrick Msomi from Kwa-Zulu Natal Broadband Connectivity. The ICT and broadband roll-out is part of the government’s plan to develop poor and disadvantaged communities by providing faster Wi-fi connectivity to schools. ICT and broadband roll-out is a programme that is going to uplift schools in rural areas by improving teaching and learning methods, providing pupils with an opportunity to gain information and easily access the internet. President Jacob Zuma during the State of the Nation Address said the programme that will help to develop the country in the technology and education sector. Emslie said they have more than 2 000 schools connected and plan to connect more schools. Mkhize explained the programme as one that will change the process of learning and teaching for the better. “ICT is a game-changer. It makes young people study 24/7, not only in class, but also on the internet.” She advised pupils to use technology to develop their lives and the lives of the community.

At the rollout of the programme (from left) Department of Education HOD Nkosinathi Sishi, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, Shaun Emsile and Patrick Msomi from Broadband Connectivity (KZN). “The use of technology, if taken seriously and used with a certain degree of responsibility, could ensure intrusive and quality education and promote life-learning opportunities,” said Mkhize Sishi showed his support and appreciation of the introduction of the ICT and broadband roll-out

programme, saying the DoE has invested a lot of money and resources in ICT and broadband roll-out to try to improve connectivity in schools. “The roll-out of broadband is one of the significant programmes of the ruling party and the KZN government.” He said they have been looking for new ways to improve

learning outcomes especially after the low matric pass rate in 2015. “We look at ICT as one option that could assist us, but also it provides us with an opportunity to guide our young people about possibilities in the education sector.” Zamazulu High School is optimistic the government will fulfil their

promise to provide the school with fast wireless connection, especially since the one initially installed is not functioning properly. Principal Xolani Ndlela said the broadband will give pupils more research opportunities, improved connectivity, easy access to information and make teaching more effective.”

Struggle stalwart at Sharpeville massacre

ON 21 March, 1960 Pan-African Congress leader Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, one of our greatest political icons of our age, led a mass defiance of South African pass laws. He urged blacks to go to the nearest police station and demand to be arrested. Police opened fire on a peaceful crowd in the township of Sharpeville and killed 69 people, injuring 200. Many were shot in the back while fleeing from police gunfire. This protest changed the course of the South African history. In court Sobukwe led his own defence and was jailed for three years for incitement. At the end of the sentence the government

pushed the so-called “Sobukwe clause” through Parliament to keep him in prison without trial. For the next six years Sobukwe was kept in solitary confinement on Robben Island. On his release, he completed his articles with attorney HZM Nzimande. Thereafter, he opened his law firm charging minimal fees and doing mostly pro-bono work. Sobukwe died February 1978. A total of 5 000 people attended his funeral at Graaf-Reinet, the place of his birth. DEENA PADAYACHEE Hayfields

Make quality education a priority

T

HIS letter is with reference to the decision taken by the ANC local government with respect to the Scottsville Bowling Club. The ANC has for the past few months emphasised the importance of education and that this is a priority for them. Clearly these are merely sweeping statements, and have no intention of supporting or investing in our education system as is indicative by the blocking of Scottsville Primary School in acquiring a lease to the Scottsville Bowling Club. The Department of Education is putting pressure on the school to increase the intake, and under the current facilities this would be detrimental to the quality of education provided, as well as the comfort and safety of pupils.

I also refute the statement that the school has all the facilities it needs. The school has been on the same piece of land for 100 years, despite growing in size to almost 900 pupils. This is the only piece of land the school can use to expand, whereas commercial developers can utilise other parts of the city. The DA believes and advocates, that quality education is key to improved quality of life. It empowers individuals to obtain a fulfilling job, contribute to the economy and utilise talents to the full. Is this not reason enough for the school to be given preference? URAISHA HASWELL Via email

Captain fallen, but not forgotten IT is now 20 years since the late Captain L.K. Pillay, and other officers, paid the ultimate price with their lives in the dedication and devotion in the line of duty in the South African Police Service. Luran was the eldest son of Mr Krishna and Mrs Vino Pillay, who headed The Divine Life Society at the bottom of Loop Street (now Jabu Ndlovu). Luran and I were in the SAPS training college together in 1982. After passing out he was transferred to the VIP Protection Unit in Cape Town and returned to SAPS Mountain Rise where he served for many years. He was apparently due to take up a position as second in command at the Plessislaer Police Station on the Monday following the fatal shooting. Luran was a gentle and humble soul who wouldn’t harm a fly. He lived strictly by his religious convictions and was a vegetarian. He was a devoted and dedicated member of SAPS. His death cut short a promising career ahead of him. Before the fatal night certain suspects escaped from the Mountain Rise police cells. The

following day information was received to the whereabouts of these suspects. The brave hearts responded promptly only to fall into an alleged ambush that was laid for these young officers and they were fatally wounded, never returning to their families. His wife Drew and their children, Navashan, Yourisha and Suvaniya were robbed of a husband, a dad. The family was robbed of a son and a brother. Captain was a dedicated husband, father and son. Family members are still traumatised by his death. Not only was this a great loss to the community of Pietermaritzburg, but to our rainbow nation as a whole. Servamus et Servimus – I have served and I (still) serve was their only concern. This is so sad, but real. Fallen, but not forgotten.

mately up to the students to help universities transform. Parents and community leaders must also help and guide students on how to engage and communicate effectively with university administration, regarding their challenges and grievances. Critical dialogue and effective communication need to take place urgently in order to address transformation, student housing, fee structure, accommodation, language policy and other issues affecting the students. Mandatory workshops and social-justice modules would be an ideal way to ensure that students are aware of the resources and mechanisms available to them for conflict resolution. MOHAMED SAEED Pietermaritzburg

Save historic buildings WE must preserve and protect our historic buildings in Pietermaritzburg. My heart and soul were filled with sadness and despair when I saw a derelict community building at the corner of Church and William streets. This was once a building of pride and joy to the local community, who put up this edifice with their hardearned money during the early 1800s. A community building wellused during the dark days of apartheid. As I moved closer to the building, the air around it was enveloped with a strong stench of urine. I saw

Also, one must take into cognisance the modus operandi of colonialism and apartheid, which was orchestrated thus - structural, institutional and psychological racism. Don’t judge me I AM a proud Edendale citizen and just like you I am also human. Just because I come from the streets doesn’t mean I am what you say I am - a thug, criminal or a drug addict Just because you’ve got badges on your uniform doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly became an expert on how a perfect human should look. And wearing a tie to

work is no different to wearing dirty Converse takkies on the streets. Wearing a suit, a badge and a tie doesn’t mean you are legit - it means you’re working for people. What gives you the right to look at me as a criminal and search me for drugs and weapons every time we meet. My dirty Converse takkies are dirty because I did some fencing for our my

disabled neighbour. They are dirty because I got a job as a general contractor. They are dirty because, unlike you, I can’t afford a second pair of shoes, so what will I wear while they’re on the laundry line. They are dirty because I proudly live on the dusty streets of Edendale. MANDLA MOSIA Edendale

Effective dialogue needed urgently THE university academic year has just started and already we are off to a damaging start. Many universities across South Africa have halted academic work due to vandalism and violence. These recent events are not good for students and are very disheartening. I strongly believe and support that universities must be places of robust academic debate and dialogue, even if it means making space for dissenting voices or views that are controversial or opinions that are deeply intimidating. I also understand the anger and frustration of some students, and I identify and empathise with their legitimate grievances. However, when the protest becomes destructive, intimidating and violent, and obstructs teaching and learning, I do not condone that. Although university administration has its role to play in transforming campuses, it is ulti-

Today, the building is in absolute decay and despair. I humbly appeal to Amafa, the Historic Buildings Association and the municipality of Pietermaritzburg to protect this building, which was once the only community centre of note. HOME

Add harmony to your home F OR the first time, Pantone has chosen two shades as its Pantone colour of the year for 2016. According to Pantone, Rose Quartz, a soft shade of pink, is a persuasive yet gentle tone which conveys compassion and a sense of composure, while Serenity is weightless and airy, like an expansion of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of relief and relaxation even in troubled times. Liza Watermeyer, retail and display co-ordinator at Tile Africa, said: “I am excited about incorporating these colours into décor environments as the visual contrast between these two hues will give a balanced and harmonious look to any room. “This is due to the fact that they blend gently into one another on the colour wheel and they are representative of both warm and cool tones.” Watermeyer shares a few tips on how to incorporate these colours in the home.

The right combination Let these tints add to your home’s interior by using them as an accent or sub-dominant colour in a more neutral scheme. Pairing Rose Quartz and Serenity with white will result in a fresh, modern look, whereas combining matt finishes with natural wood, stone, taupe or even green, will give a laid back, natural feel to your interior. If it’s luxe and drama you’re after, consider using a brighter hue along with these lighter tones on shiny, reflective surfaces. Or, add silver or gold in the form of a mirror to finish off the look. In the bathroom Giving your bathroom an updated look that incorporates these colours is fairly easy. Accessorise your bathroom with towels, a bathroom mat, soaps and candles in one or even both of the colours. Add a free-standing table or wall-mounted shelf painted in a lighter tone to hold all these bathing essentials. Complete the look with a potted plant in a container that mimics your chosen colour or colours. In the bedroom Add a soft, dreamy throw in either Rose Quartz or Serenity to the end of the bed. Trim neutral curtains in a

matching hue and co-ordinate with pillows on an upholstered day bed or chaise in an analogous shade. Silk, linen and mohair look especially good in these tones. In the kitchen and living areas Today, many appliances come in these beautiful colours so why not consider combining these appliances with matching crockery on open shelves in the kitchen. Use frames in these hues on a white wall for black and white etchings or sketches. Combine texture, light wood or metal furniture in a matt patina and use any one of these colours for selected objects, occasional chairs and artwork. — Supplied.

Creating an attractive pool area

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Placing furniture around the pool gives you the opportunity to enjoy it without actually getting into it.

A

DDING a swimming pool in your garden could not only benefit your family, but also increase your home’s

value. Take full advantage of the outdoors by creating an attractive and inviting pool ar ea you can enjoy all summer long. Distinctive Designs Group shares some tips … Look for decking alternatives Adding a deck near a swimming pool is not advisable as the natural wood comes with high maintenance requirements. Homeowners, however, can get composite decking or tiles that look like wood as an alternative. The natural browns and greys of the decking will contrast with the pool water, creating a beautiful attraction. If you choose the tile option, make sure you pick an unglazed tile for safety reasons. Add colour Add colour to your outdoors by placing pot plants like palm trees around the pool. Pot plants are not permanent fixtures, so you can move them around as you see fit. You could also bring in some mosaic acces sories which have become popular recently. Mosaicing combines a number of colours

but nowadays, homeowners have the op tion of using a solid colour around the pool. Install a water feature Mounting a new water feature in your garden will create peace and tranquillity. Placing a water feature near your swim ming pool is a fantastic way of creating visual interest. Moving water creates movement not only for the eyes but for the ears as well. Get a fake lawn

In the last two years, synthetic lawn has become conventional. Artificial grass comes in a variety of colours and its realistic appearance allows you to add it around your swimming pool, without worry about the hassles that come with natural grass. Furnish the space Placing furniture around the pool gives you the opportunity to enjoy it without actually getting into it. Being able to sit at the pool and read a book can be calming.

Outdoor furniture comes in a wide range of options, which you can customise to your liking. Get a braai Braai areas are not only practical, but also entertaining. Having a builtin braai near the swimming pool is the peak of luxury in garden entertainment. Build a lapa A thatch roof lapa will make any swimming pool area appealing. The more

modern swimming pools, however, are going for wood cladding which is also an attractive option. Maintain the swimming pool Whatever you choose to add to your swimming pool area, remember that a pool is only as good as it is blue. Maintain your pool and keep up the pH. balance as no amount of pot plants and garden furniture can make a green pool look attractive. — Property24.

SHOOTING THE BREEZE

JERRY BARNES IT is difficult sometimes to criticise your elders or seniors in the workplace, family or in sports circles and I find it difficult or traditionally impossible to point out mistakes or stand up to elders. In most cases faults committed by older or senior people and leaders are often overlooked or swept under the carpet in order to protect their status and position. Maybe for a long time most of us, including yours truly, have tried or have eaten with an uncomfortable lump in our throat trying to overlook, show respect and protect Jomo Sono, owner and head coach of Jomo Cosmos. The same applies to the former Bafana Bafana captain and Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Steve “Mphathi” Komphela. Sono needs to sit quietly and examine himself. He needs to make a decision about himself and his club. He also needs to accept and made peace with the fact that he is not a coach for his team Cosmos, he is the founder and owner. He also needs to understand he is the boss and his job is in the offices of his club. The black prince also needs to look at other South African trendsetters and powerful figures in football such Kaizer Motaung (Kaizer Chiefs owner and chairman), Irvin Khoza (Orlando Pirates and PSL chairman), Farouk Kadodia (Maritzburg United chairman), Manto Madlala (acting PSL CEO and Lamontville Golden Arrows chairperson), Alfred da Costa (Bidvest Wits chairman), Mike Mokoena (Free

State Stars chairman), Patrice Motsepe (Mamelodi Sundowns chairman), Khulu Sibiya (SuperSport United chairman), and others. I take my hat off to most of these officials because you never see them interfering with their technical benches or head coaches. They understand their roles as head of their clubs and always delegate properly and effectively in administration. The truth is if Sono wants to see his team playing normal and winning games, he needs to behave like the owner, employ the head coach and remain in his office. Sono is overextending himself because he wants to do everything. He wants to be the owner, chairman, managing director, talent scout and head coach. Nowadays soccer is not just a game, it is big business and coaches need to be qualified and continually upgrade themselves. Sono’s ways of coaching is ancient and old-fashioned. It is also clear that Sono’s team - Jomo Cosmos (Ezenkosi) are likely to be relegated to the national first division for the third time if he does not step down. If Cosmos want to prosper and stay in the PSL, Sono must fire the coach. Unfortunately, in this case, the owner and current head coach is Jomo Sono himself. The other hot topic among SA’s soccer followers is Kaizer Chiefs and Komphela. Last weekend Glamour Boys suffered their third straight defeat after a 1-0 home loss to ASEC Mimosas in the CAF Champions League first round. The way I see it, AmaKhosi are in trouble and in crisis. For the first time in SA soccer history, Chiefs are just another team and there is absolutely nothing special about them. I may be wrong or out of order, but I think Amakhosi are too big for Komphela. Also the stage looks too big for him and for him to step aside will be a wise move and will save Chiefs from further embarrassment.

OCAL talent were the toast of the town when new head coach of the South African Futsal (indoor) national team, João Freitas Pinto, selected a handful of Pietermaritzburg players and one official in Johannesburg last week. Pinto has trimmed his provisional squad of 48 down to 26 as preparations continue for the upcoming 2016 Caf Futsal Cup of Nations (Afcon), but Renaldo Donnelly, Simphiwe Mgedeza and Trevino Pillay made the cut. To add another feather to the already colourful indoor soccer cap, the Pietermaritzburg administrator, former M.L. Sultan High School pupil, Ebby Hossen, also general secretary for South African Indoor Football Association (Saifa), was appointed team manager of the national team. “This is a good step in the right direction for local indoor [futsal]. “A few weeks ago I predicted this type of football was growing in popularity in Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal and all over South Africa. To see ourselves and our youngsters in the SA team speaks volumes about the game,”said Hossen. Speaking from the camp at Fun Valley in Johannesburg, Donnelly said the training learning curve and players were enjoying it. “The camp is just out of this world. We are learning a lot and the spirit is pure class.” SA will host Afcon for the first time from 15 to 24 April. Last weekend Pinto held a training camp and had the

Bandile Shandu started his first game of the season for Maritzburg United last week and is keen on continuing his development and play more regularly.

Shandu closer to goal LUNGA BIYELA BANDILE Shandu made his debut four years ago while only 17, and in Grade 11 at Maritzburg College, and has been biding his time as he worked to become a regular in the side. Now 21, and a more refined player than he was when he was a teenager, Shandu has been getting closer to the first team, having started and scoring his first senior goal in United’s last game against Black Leopards. Shandu, a regular in the Team of Choice’s successful run in the Multichoice Diski Challenge, has paved the way for himself — and other young players — to be given a chance in the first team, and he was grateful for the opportunity. “It was a great experience after working hard and working through the Diski Challenge and trying to get my form and my performance at a high level to play for the first team, and that really helped me a lot,” Shandu told The Witness this week. “The game against Leopards was just me trying to express the performance and game time that I’ve been getting in the Multichoice Diski Challenge,” he said. Now, he was looking to step up his development and get regular game time in the senior team, and felt the experience of the playing in the reserve team competition would help him in achieving that. “It really helped me a lot,” said Shandu. “The games we played, the matches we won and the confidence we had was a morale boost and it helped me a lot.”

Even sitting on the bench for the first team has been a learning curve for Shandu, who has at times, shared it with former Maritzburg College team mate Ryan Moon, who, still only 19, made his topflight debut a month ago against Platinum Stars. “Sitting on the bench makes you see the game more clearly, and makes you understand it clearly. “And, you see the coach and the instructions he gives and the way he wants you to play. “It really helps. Just having the coach next to you, seeing him telling players how to play has been helpful,” he said. Shandu will get the chance to play again tonight when United take on Golden Arrows in the league, and although he gave a good account of himself against Leopards where he scored United’s second in a 31 win, he added they had moved on from the game, and were solely focusing on the game against Abafana Bes’thende, which was “the big one”. Maritzburg United’s next game will be next Saturday (9 April) against University of Pretoria at Harry Gwala at 3pm. PSL fixtures this weekend Saturday, 19 March Golden Arrows v SuperSport United at Chatsworth Stadium at 3:30pm, Free State Stars v Polokwane City at Goble Park at 3:30pm Sunday Platinum Stars v Black Aces at Royal Bafokeng Stadium at 3:30 pm, Chippa United v Maritzburg Utd at Nelson Man dela Bay Stadium at 3:30pm

Defending hockey titles in challenge NANDI Ngubane from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High charged down the Treverton goals during the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional at the Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge that took place over the weekend Defending their titles, St Anne’s College and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High regained their regional crowns in the Pietermaritzburg North Regional and Pietermaritzburg Central Regional at the Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge in Pietermaritzburg this weekend. St Anne’s College was in a league of their own at the AB Jackson fields. The team. led by former SA Men’s coach Carlos Pereira, were favourites winning all of their games. In the Hilton derby, they took on The Wykeham Collegiate in a highly exciting game, where Saints slotted in the all-important one goal that secured their overall win in the round-robin regional. Howick High School were on top form and the team fought hard and impressed with their skill. Girls’ High is one of only two teams which have an undefeated track record in the history of this tournament. The “Green Machine” made it six in a row when they methodically worked their way to the top of their log. It wasn’t an easy ride to the top as Girls’ High drew with rivals Epworth early in their round-robin games.

Shining in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional was Sibusiso Ndlovu, a pupil from Voortrekker High, who was representing Epworth High School. Being recognised for his efforts at the Pietermaritzburg North Regional was up-and-coming umpire Matthew Memar from Grace College who represented Linpark High at the tournament. Girls’ High will join the newcomer team Sarel Cilliers from Glencoe, winners of the KZN North regional, and Durban Girls’ College who took the honours in the Durban Central Regionals. These four teams will be joined by six teams from around KwaZulu-Natal at the grand finals at St Mary’s DSG in July. The next regional will be the Durban South Regional at 3 Schools Trust on 9 April. The two teams had an identical score sheet that had the tacticians number-crunching the goal differences and “what if” scenarios. In Epworth’s final game, they met thirdplaced Treverton. In the hard-fought tussle, the two teams ended their efforts with a 0-0 draw which gave Girls’ High their ticket to the finals. Both St Anne’s College and Pietermaritzburg Girls High then went on to play in the cross regional final of the Parklane Superspar final where St Anne’s were lucky to slot in one goal. Girls’ High dug deep against Saints and were disappointed to find the back of the net twice only to have the goals disallowed as the umpires didn’t play advantage.
