MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

anced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. New Face of KZN winners to be crowned >> Finalists under strict scrutiny of judges and auditors

I

TS all systems go for this year’s Face of KZN model search contest on Saturday 3 September at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. A total of 30 finalists from all over KZN will be competing to be crowned the new Face of KZN 2016. The theme for this year’s competition is “Celebrating youth cultural diversity”. Event organiser Bengs Nkosi said the judging selection for the final 30 took three months. “The finalists were under the strict scrutiny of our judges and auditors. The competition also allows the public at the event to vote for their favourite contestant, but the judges’ decision is final,” said Nkosi. Bengs founded the KZN Model Search competition in January 2010 and it has grown in leaps and bounds giving upcoming models between the ages of 18 to 35 a platform to grow in the field.

This year, winners will walk away with prizes valued at R57 500 sponsored by Bengs Nkosi, Virgin Active, Nathi B Potrait Studio, Cine Centre, Greater Edendale Mall, 39 Degrees Photography, 033 Lifestyle and Mo’Bella Beauty Salon. The female contestants will be dressed in garments by Pietermaritzburg designers Bryno Von Johncen and Sikhanyisa Designer Wear. OMMUTERS from Imbali, Snathing, Dambuza, Ashdown and other areas will have to fork out more as taxi fares are to increase from Monday, 5 September. This was confirmed by Umgungundlovu Regional Taxi Council deputy chairperson, Nhlanhla Nkomo, who said fared will increase by R1 in all 40 associations under their banner. Some associations will increase fares from today, 1 September and others from Monday, 5 September, Nkomo said.

“The decision to increase taxi fares every year was agreed on nationally in 2012. The last time the fare increased in Umgungundlovu was in 2014, this was done so as to not overburden commuters with huge increases.” He said many things determine fare increases. “Fuel price is not the only determining factor, there are many other expenses involved, including taxi driver wages, taxi parts and the general maintenance of taxis to make sure our commuters are transported in comfortable and roadworthy taxis. “The money we get is sometimes not enough

to cover all our expenses.” This increase means that Imbali residents will now pay R24 for a return trip to the Pietermaritzburg CBD. Nkomo said they had liaised with the National Public Transport Passenger Association (NPTPA) before deciding on the hike. “In our associations we have people who are part of the NPTPA, which is the body that protects the rights of commuters. We do not make any decisions without consulting with them first because we understand that commuters are important stakeholders in the taxi industry,” he said.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal is investigating the fire at a coffee shop M100 PARTITION on its Howard College campus, a spokesperson said on Tuesday. BLOCKS The university’s security services and public order police were on high alert and monitoring the Durban campus, Lesiba Seshoka said. The cafeteria coffee shop caught fire on Monday night. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said there had been no protests and no case had been opened with authorities. Some people posted photos of the fire on Facebook, and claimed it could be linked to protests earlier in the day. Student Representative Council deputy ® president Sunshine Myende said the loss of the coffee shop was a blow. “As the SRC, we are disappointed and distance ourselves from the burning or vandalism of anything. At the end of the day, we all need the same infrastructure. Life without the cafeteria coffee shop is difficult today.” Myende did not believe students were responsible for the fire and appealed to anyone with information to approach the SRC, university management, or the police. >> Mayor confident new administration will take the municipality to metro status come 2021

The new uMgungundlovu District Mayor Thobekile Maphumulo holds a photo of her late husband, Chief Mhlabunzima Maphumu lo, who was assassinated in 1991. Maphumulo’s journey to mayorship has been long and arduous.

HE new administration of Umgungundlovu District Municipality is headed by women. The ANC’s newly elected mayor, Thobekile Maphumulo and her deputy Thandi Rosemary FucwaneZungu, were voted into the top positions recently. They are two of the 45 councillors who were sworn in at the district’s inaugural council meeting last Thursday at the Royal Showgrounds. Maphumulo received 32 votes beating Inkatha Freedom Party’s Bukelani Zuma, whose nomination was seconded by the Democratic Alliance, and received 13 votes. Fucwane-Zungu was elected unopposed as deputy mayor. Outgoing mayor Yusuf Bhamjee is now speaker after receiving 32 votes, while IFP’s Balozile Cynthia Sokhela, who also contested the position, received 13 votes. Edward Dladla was nominated unopposed as chief whip. Speaker Bhamjee assured that he will ensure the ANC does not exploit its 71% majority. Addressing council for the first time, Maphumulo said she was confident the new administration will take the municipality to metro status come 2021. “As the newly elected council we will make sure we carry on where the old administration left off. We will

however, need participation and feedback from the community to put more effort in everything we do.” Maphumulo said they are aware of the challenges still facing the people of the district. “We have a clear strategic plan to take us to 2021, this includes setting

up rapid response teams to speed up service delivery and address backlog in our communities.” The new council will start by addressing issues raised during doorto-door campaigns ahead of the local government elections she said. “We will not begin to make empty

promises, we will adopt integrated development planning to plan future developments in our areas. The IDP will speak to our budget allocation.” Maphumulo urged the newly elected councillors to work with the community. “Go to the people, listen to what

they want and work with them so that they can take ownership of developments they see in their area.” Executive committee members are Thobekile Maphumulo, Thandi Rosemary Fucwane Zungu, Chris Ndlela, Angel Bonani Mchunu, Gugu Dladla and Sbongile Mkhize

IETERMARITZBURG student teacher and songstress Nomalungelo Khumalo has been selected in the top 16 of SA Idols, season 12. The 21-year-old, who survived Idols “hell week” auditioned in Durban and won the judges over with her rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s And I Am Telling You at Theatre Week at the Wild Coast Sun. Khumalo, currently doing her Bachelor of Education at Unisa, said at her first audition she was motivated by her pupils at Maritzburg Christian School to enter the competition. According to her profile on the Idols website, she is also a member of the band, Acoustiq Assassins. “I auditioned because the band I sing with and the children I teach encouraged me to chase this dream and pursue it and I thought, ‘let me give it a try to see if South Africa will love me’.” She said she was looking forward to the whole Idols experience.

“I’m looking forward to being behind the scenes and being in front of the camera, so please vote for me.” She said her biggest challenge in the competition thus far has been looking after her voice before performances. “The biggest challenge has been preserving my voice. During Theatre Week there’s been a lot of singing and

activities we do, so preserving the voice is hard.” Khumalo is one of six contestants representing KZN this season. On Sunday the first group of eight top 16 finalists will have to persuade the viewing public that they deserve a spot in the top 10. Host, Proverb, will explain how the voting process is to work.

>> ‘Don’t turn a blind eye’ teachers told

Games stimulate development, teach children how to focus, and help to calm and soothe a fussy child. When your day is overfull and your imagination has all but run dry, consult this list for simple but effective ideas. 3–6 months · Roll Baby from side to side along the length of the bed. · Play peek-a-boo. · Pull your baby up into a sitting position and let her fall back onto a soft cushion. Most babies enjoy being pulled up, and the surprise of falling back will delight her. · Long walks will soothe unsettled babies and waken their curiosity. 6–9 months · Dance to all those holiday jingles with your baby. · Most babies love being tickled, and will laugh from the depths of their bellies. · Run a feather up and down her arms and legs, and on her tummy. If Baby doesn’t like this sensation, it may be a sign that she will profit from firmer body massage. · Roll a soft, light beach ball to each other. · Make rattles with covered toilet rolls and a variety of bells, grains, seeds and beans as fillings. 9–12 months · Convert Christmas boxes into tunnels, and make an obstacle course for your crawler, encouraging her to crawl through the box tunnels, over chairs and under tables. · Hold Baby securely and “fly” her around the room or garden, twirling around, and going up and down. · Invest in a play telephone and have animated conversations on this telephone with your baby. · A saucepan and a wooden spoon are a sure recipe for a half hour of engrossing, if noisy, fun! · Stacking toys are firm favourites and encourage dexterity. · Wooden and fabric books with animal pictures provide tactile stimulation of the most valuable kind. · A magnet and a bunch of keys provide endless amusement. · Toys that challenge Baby to match shapes are great for this age. · Tell stories with hand and finger puppets. · Give your little one a few scarves, underpants and T-shirts and place her in front of the mirror.

12–18 months · Hide behind curtains or around doorways and call to your little one. She’ll be so excited when she finds you. · Fill a tub with suds and plastic dishes, a brush and cloth, and let Baby splash around. Don’t let her out of sight though, as any water source can still be a drowning hazard. · Put sunscreen on your baby, avoid midday sun and don’t forget the hat, and your baby will enjoy hours of unadulterated enjoyment in the baby pool. Add a few buckets and plastic containers and her face will say it all! Never leave her alone. · While you water the garden, allow your little one to bake a few mud pies.

HE trial in which bakkie driver Lungile Mthimkhulu (32) is charged with negligently causing the death of eight primary schoolchildren in Imbali focused on the mechanical condition of the vehicle when it crashed. The bakkie was transporting pupils from Fezokhule Primary school when it veered out of control and smashed into a house at Imbali on the afternoon of January 28, 2015. The children who died were between seven and 11 years old. Mthimkhulu, who admits she was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of culpable homicide before regional court magistrate Bhekizitha Phoswa. She alleges that an “unforeseen mechanical failure of the braking mechanism” of the bakkie caused the crash and not negligence on her part. An engineering forensic analyst with the SAPS, Captain Tshimologo Mogwera, and Warrant Officer Michael Roberts of the SAPS Accident Unit in Pietermaritzburg were two mechanical experts called to give evidence for the state. Mogwera told the court that when examining various braking components referred to him he had found the brake pad linings (on the brake pads) to have completely “disintegrated”. He said in his opinion this had happened “in an instant”, and there were no signs of preliminary fatigue or damage prior to the accident happening. In his view the damage would have occurred

on impact. Defence advocate Shane Mathews suggested to him, however, that the “brake pad failure” happened when Mthimkhulu tried to apply brakes. He said according to Mthimkhulu’s version, when she pushed the brakes she “heard a noise like something snapping” and the brake pedal stayed down. She was travelling down a steep hill at the time. “There are no brake marks on the road or on any other surface. This can show two things. Either she wanted to commit suicide and kill everyone who was with her in the motor vehicle, or she braked and the

brakes did not engage … nothing happened. It was an instantaneous, catastrophic failure of the braking system,” Mathews suggested. Mogwera told the court he was not aware of the facts of the case but had been asked to examine the material sent to him and express an opinion. The material included components of the braking system as well as a tyre. As far as the tyre was concerned he had found it to be in good condition. Aside from the culpable homicide charges, Mthimkhulu faces alternative counts of reckless and negligent driving or driving without consideration for other road users. The case is proceeding.

Jika Joe residents protest over electricity

ECHO

ESIDENTS of the Jika Joe informal settlement barricaded roads as they protested twice this weekend calling for free electricity from the municipality. Manor, parts of Burger and Loop streets and the Village (residential area behind Brookside Mall) were left without electricity during the protests. It is alleged the Jika Joe residents illegally connected numerous cables to electricity power boxes and light poles around the area, which resulted in an overload of electricity. Around midday on Saturday, municipal employees were escorted into the area to repair the electricity power boxes. After the illegal connections were removed, Jika Joe residents barricaded Masukwana (East) Street with burning tyres and debris in protest. The protest went on for almost two hours on Saturday but on Sunday the protest erupted again. A resident living in Ash Road, who asked not to be named, said more than 100 people barricaded Ash Road and “dug up” the tar, allegedly to place their illegal cables there. “They are running the cable from the light poles near our houses into the informal settlement. The cables began sparking and our electricity went off,” the resident said. Although there was a strong police presence in the area, residents said the angry mob of protesters were not stopped. Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said the problem was solved on Saturday and electricity was restored to the area. “The problem is not that residents of Jika Joe do not have electricity. The problem is illegal connections and the people who are not paying for their

electricity consumption. They want free electricity,” Mafumbatha said. She pleaded with the community to work with the municipality and pay for their services. “These acts of protests and illegal connections are not just threatening municipal infrastructure but are life threatening. One death is too many,”

uMgungundlovu South Cluster police spokesperson Sergeant Mtokozisi Ngobese said police, including the Public Order Policing unit, dispersed the crowd on Saturday and no arrests were made then. By late Sunday afternoon when protests erupted again, Ngobese said the Public Order Police Unit were

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE MASECHABA Ndlovu’s The Great Debate on e.tv, which was about food production and use, proved to be plain good journalism. In my opinion, the recent show succeeded in sustaining and advancing South African discourse on a matter that is as important and relevant as the devastating consequences of the spread of HIV and Aids, that is, hunger. The show had dynamic people like former Cosatu general-secretary, Jay Naidoo, now one of the leaders of an agricultural and land initiative called Earthrise Trust, as well as the ANC KZN firebrand, Bheki Cele, now deputy minister of agriculture, forestry and fishery. It also featured representatives of white agriculture farming interest in the form of Agri SA. Naidoo stole the show with his charisma, authority and pragmatism, let alone one of the inserts in the show which was on Earthrise Trust’s people-orientated farming cooperative which he said could be replicated all over the country. The co-operative comprises former farm workers who now have their own land and crops they are producing and selling. Naidoo and other non-governmental organisations representing farm workers regretted the fact that South Africa is producing food and exporting it overseas when there are too many people in the country who are reportedly going to bed without food as a way of life. The e.tv presenter, Ndlovu, made me proud when she wanted answers to the challenge of food production and supply challenges as Cele tried to help her with statistics on the estimated number of people who go to sleep

Tackling food supply challenges, realistically without anything to eat regularly. She sort of suggested that it is no longer enough for the likes of ANC’s Cele to acknowledge the magnitude of the pain or damage that was caused by centuries of white political, economic and social domination, but they must be seen to be doing something about it as they are now in government or in charge of policy transformation. However, one must be mindful of the fact that the ANC inherited government in a capitalist or free enterprise context in which government is a democratic player in the interest of the broader public and not a dictator. Moreover, South Africans have good reasons not to be too excited about commercial land takeover in an African sub-continent where our own black struggle hero, the ageing Robert Gabriel Mugube, the life-long president of Zimbabwe, has in recent years passed laws in that country which allowed blacks to take over white-owned commercial land without compensation. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector and economy as a whole is collapsing. Reclaimed land is underutilised under Mugabe’s watch and one doubts his interest, competence, commitment, vision and capacity to develop or establish marketing networks. One of the highlights of the show was a white lady who was quite vocal about the insulting absence of food chain shops in the show and how this confirmed their nonchalance and disregard for the plight of the hungry. The participation of a Department of Social Development official was most appropriate given the fact that this department has a programme dedicated to addressing the challenge of hunger or starvation known as

social relief of distress. Cele’s honesty and openness to criticism saved him from a debate that clearly suggested government was still collaborating with white dominated capital in the production and supply of food in a manner that benefits capital and not the hungry. Yet again the presenter’s understanding of her panel and subject matter made me proud and I realised that our country is indeed in safe hands if we have such young critical thinkers who are not only talented as television show hosts, but show genuine sensitivity to the challenges that South Africa has. Cele’s assertion that government had to be seen to be supportive of commercial agriculture because South Africa was competing at an international level made sense. But judging from the input from others, it seems that it has dawned on the voice of the voiceless like Naidoo and other NGOs that being seen to be viable as a country must also translate to our capacity to feed the hungry at home. And that this is crucial and non-negotiable. It is true that the ruling party or ANC government is addressing the land and agriculture issues. I am aware of the growing number of people who are re-claiming their ancestral land that previously got taken away by white farmers. It is initiatives like The Great Debate that make me continue to believe in the power of journalism in promoting relevant debates in South Africa. Such shows assist civil society’s capacity for dialogue, engagement and the subsequent realisation of the aspirations of the previously marginalised. • Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

BEFORE Sarafina the movie, there was Sarafina the play. This September the UKZN Drama Department, Pietermaritzburg Campus is to present this critically acclaimed Broadway musical at the university’s Hexagon Theatre. The play was originally written by award-winning actor, director, playwright Mbongeni Ngema who also choreographed, produced and composed music for the stage play when it first hit New York stages in the eighties. The play is set in Soweto, specifically at Morris Isaacson High, a school in which the students of 1976 protested against the imposition of using Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in township schools. Led by a fierce young woman, Sarafina, who is committed to the struggle against apartheid, they brave

tear gas and police shootings in an attempt to fight for justice and freedom in the education system. The play comes alive through performances by a young cast of second and third-year drama students and forms part of the department’s annual student production. They are also joined by three students from the Creative Arts College and a pupil from Girls’ High. The play is directed by Ntokozo Madlala, a lecturer in the Drama Department, musical direction assisted by T. Christian, a rising musical producer who performed at this year’s Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival, and a former drummer for Simphiwe Dana. Choreography is by lecturer Pumelela “Push” Nqelenga and Brenda Lee Cele, who manages Accoustic Assassins and directed And the Girls in

their Sunday Dresses earlier this year. The production also features lecturer in the department, Ayanda Khala Phiri, who brings a colourful performance to the supporting role of Teaspoon. The role of Sarafina is shared by Nandile Khumalo and Zazi Kunene, who both bring unique strengths to this iconic role. 8 to 13 September (Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday at 6.30pm, Saturday and Sunday at 3pm) Tickets R100 (concessions R50 R80). THE senior national football team have nothing but pride to play for when they take on Mauritania at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit this Friday. Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations 2017 qualification campaign has been a total shambles, and Shakes Mashaba’s men being eliminated before the final game says as much. Now it’s up to the team to pick up whatever pride they may have left, and start building towards trying to qualify for the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia, which, unfortunately, is not in Mashaba’s mandate, who stated this week that their goal was preparing a team for Qatar in 2022. Bidvest Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo has had a good start to the season so far, leading his side to 2-1 victories against both Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates where he scored in both games, and he was confident of carrying on for the national team where he left off with his club. “They always say a good defender is the one who scores goals, even though we have strikers in the team. At the moment, it is just that I am at the right place at the right time and given a chance, I will go forward and try to score,” the defender said about his performances for his club. “They say you are only as good as your last game. Given a chance to play, I will use it whenever called upon. We have to get a result, more so because we are playing at home …” Mashaba will be without his main defensive duo with Rivaldo Coetzee pulling out of the side through illness, and Erick Matoho, who damaged his ankle ligaments on national duty at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, also absent. “The coach knows that everyone called upon here can do the job, they have the ability to perform, and I know anyone given a chance to play they will do their best so I will also take to the field with a winning mentality when given a chance,” said Hlatshwayo. Speaking about the game against the north Africans, he said: “It’s about pride for the country, and as the coach has been saying, there are no friendly games when you play for South Africa. “We will make sure we play to the best of our abilities to win the match because to be called up to the national team is an honour.” It’s the same rhetoric Mashaba and his team have been repeating time and time again over the last year, but the results have not been forthcoming. That South Africa failed yet again to qualify for the continental showpiece is a disaster for the once proud football nation that briefly walked among the greats, and had Brazilian legend Pele declaring that an African country would win the World Cup before long. Coetzee, and Ajax Cape Town teammate Prince Nxumalo, who was also forced out of the squad through injury this week, will be replaced by Chippa United’s Diamond Thopola and Orlando Pirates’ Thabiso Kutumela, who was part of the under-23s in Rio. The game at Mbombela Stadium will kick off at 7.05 pm.

HE 2016 Mandela Day Marathon 42km men’s winner, Tsepang Ramonene, said he knew he was going to win from the start. The Lesotho-born won the race run between Imbali and Howick and walked away with the R100 000 prize money. “Before the race I got a pep talk from Gift Kelehe and he told me not to focus on the record, but on opening the gap between me and the person behind me. “I trained hard and was determined to win this year after coming fourth last year,” he said. Ramonene said last year he fell

This time around I decided to manage my pace to have control of the race.” He said he was very happy with his 2:29:14 finish. “I’m very happy that I represented the people of Lesotho well especially the people who helped me train back home, including Tsepo Mathibelle, who took part in the Rio Olympic Games this year.” The pint-sized athlete said he was also preparing to take part in this year’s Hereos Marathon. Selam Abere Alebachew from

Ethopia defended her title and won the women’s 42km race. Alabachew also walked away with a R100 000 prize money after beating her 2015 record of 2:52:28. Makhosazane Mhlongo from Hammarsdale, came third in the women’s 42km race and said she took three months preparing for the race. “I’m very happy with my results; I will continue taking part in 42km races to improve my times for bigger races like the Comrades Marathon. I’m hopeful that in the coming years I will win the Mandela Day Marathon women’s race.” Mhlongo said she is looking forward to competing in the SA Cross-Country championships this September.

Comrades Marathon marshals honoured MORE than 50 people have been honoured by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) with Green Name Certificates for providing marshal services to the Comrades Marathon for more than a decade. The Comrades Marathon Community Marshals Programme, consisting of a 200-strong team, was implemented by the Comrades Association in 2004 in response to the need to increase runners’ safety along the route. Since then, the group has ensured the safe passage of Comrades Marathon runners along the route from Cato Ridge to Inchanga. The association said the group had performed their duties “with pride and a deep sense of responsibility for the safety and protection of Comrades Marathon runners along this stretch of the 89km Comrades route”. The association has provided

training and support for the team on an annual basis in the run-up to the marathon, which many have used to secure jobs for themselves. Each of the 54 Green Name recipients was honoured with a Green Name Certificate by the chairperson of the Comrades Association, Macdonald Chitja, and other officials. “From its inception the project was viewed as a community initiative. Our engagement had started with Nkosi Mlaba and his induna and has continued to grow and flourish to this day. “Although individuals were awarded the Green Name Certificates, the function is a celebration of the involvement of the entire community,” said Chitja, adding that the association was grateful to each of the Green Name recipients for their years of service to the marathon. - Supplied.

T Charles College lifted the Vodacom Nxt Lvl PMB High Schools FA Cup after an exciting tournament held at the weekend. They were certainly not rated as one of the favourites for the tournament but everything seemed to align for them as they won the coveted trophy for the first time. St Charles had earlier beaten Raisethorpe Secondary on penalties after a dramatic semifinal in which Raisethorpe had equalised in the last minute of the match. For Raisethorpe, it was a case of one penalty shoot-out too many, after they had knocked out host Carter High on penalties in the quarter finals. In the other semi-final, Maritzburg College won a gruelling encounter 1-0 against defending champions ML Sultan Secondary after a brilliant goal by Mlamuli Hlongwa. The stage was thus set for a classic final between St Charles and Maritzburg College who had also played each other in the group stage. In that encounter, neither side could find an edge and it ended 0-0. The final seemed to be going the same way, with Maritzburg College having most of the possession and St Charles defending resolutely and launching counter attacks. With five minutes to go and the large crowd starting to settle in for penalties, St Charles, exhorted on by their coaches Gary Ritchie and Mzamo Cele, started one of those counter attacks down the right wing and a low cross was turned in by striker Luyanda Mazeka to give them the lead. Maritzburg College then laid siege on the Saints’ goal for an equaliser, but they came up against a blue wall that held Perfume firm. In the girls’ section, Edendale Technical College were peerless and won the cup without conceding a R375 goal in the entire 100ml tournament. They defeated SAVE Haythorne SecondR ary in the final. Special mention “ORIGINAL” must be made of Edendale’s Lonathemba Mhlongo, who was awarded Player
