OBANTU Clinic has set aside one hour every day to attend to youth health care as part of its adolescents and youth friendly services (AYFS) initiative launched last Friday. This was announced by Jabu Mkhulise, AYFS provincial programme co-ordinator at a Youth Wellness Day at the clinic. Mkhulise said the programme was initiated by Love Life and the Department of Health after noticing an alarming rise in teenage pregnancy, youth being infected with HIV and high use of drugs leading to crime. “Working with the government we then decided to create a programme to focus exclusively on young people. The youth usually complain about the treatment they receive when they visit health-care facilities. They complain of judgmental and overbearing nurses who give them the ‘third degree’. That is why we have trained a health-care professional to best suit their needs,” said Mkhulise. Happy hour will be from 3pm to 4pm, during which the clinic will only see to young people in an area the clinic has specially set aside for them. “We have also implemented what we call the ‘jump the queue’ service to accommodate school-going youth. If you come to the clinic in school uniform you will be attended to first, especially in the morning. We know that sometimes young people leave the clinic before they get the care they require,” she said.

Mkhulise said at the launch of the HIV Prevention Campaign for Girls and Women in the city recently, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said nearly 2 000 girls and young women between the ages of 15 and 24 get infected by HIV every week. “For KZN those numbers are especially high under Umgungundlovu District and this initiative is a way to try to reduce the numbers and also keep young people at school.” Services offered to the youth include HIV testing and counselling, family planning, medical male circumcision, mental health care, counselling and educational talks. The Sobantu Clinic Youth Wellness Day programme included talks on drugs, teenage pregnancy and “blessers”. At the event Sibusiso Mthethwa from Fort Napier hospital warned young people about the dangers of using drugs and alcohol. “The use of drugs poison your brain and might trigger long-term mental health problems, including anxiety, panic and paranoia. This affects not only you and your immediate family, but the entire community as you turn to a life of crime to continue to satisfy your addiction.” Mthethwa said in order to win the fight against drugs, government must use the same model it implemented to combat HIV.

UNDREDS of Police and Prison Civil Rights Union (Popcru) members painted the streets of Pietermaritzburg red last Thursday as they marched to the Department of Correctional Services regional office in College Road. They handed over a memorandum of demands, including that they were working under bad conditions, from correctional services workers, SAPS members and Road Traffic Inspectorate officers. The workers are demanding, among other issues, payment of

outstanding overtime since 2009, that all vacant posts at lower levels be filled, the maximum safety of police officers and the nationalisation of the traffic department. Addressing the crowd, Popcru KZN chairperson, Jeff Dladla, said the march was a “warning shot” to the various departments concerned. “We are giving you seven days to respond to the demands of these workers from all over the province, failing which all hell will break loose. “We are tired of remaining in the same rank for years without promotions with only a selected few getting promoted and members on the ground getting

nothing.” Dladla said the state, as the employer, should be aware and take responsibility when workers are unhappy. “We want transformation in the SAPS, we do not want that coconut Phahlane reversing the work that has been done. Police officers are getting killed every day and no one cares, we are tired of [paying] lip service and want to see action. “We want leadership to meet with us to discuss interventions of stopping police killings.” Popcru also demanded special dispensation for members with eight years and above service in the same rank in their department.

“We want the abolishment of unconstitutional structures – clusters and regions - and to root out racism elements. We are tired of our members being racially excluded at police stations like Brighton Beach, Wentworth and Durban Central. “[The] Time for dictation is over, implement policies as they are.” Members also called for an end to unilateral implementation of decisions by management. “The Department of Labour is clear that no member should be suspended without pay and we want to know why we have members who are on suspension, and who are not getting paid.”

Phindungiphe Mpangase appeared briefly, and the case was postponed to 11 July for a formal bail application. His arrest follows the murder of Sanele Zondi (20) on Saturday morning, who was stabbed after an argument at a tavern in Kwa- Nxamalala. Zondi later died in hospital. Plessislaer Police Station spokesperson, Captain Musa Ntombela said the suspect was arrested on Saturday morning after a tavern brawl that left three injured and one dead. “When the suspect was questioned by police he said he was on his way home from the tavern when he noticed four men following him. He said they tried to attack him and rob him of his belongings and he fought back and stabbed them.” Ntombela said the suspect then fled the scene and went home and told his father what had happened and his father took him to the police station.

ED up with the damage piracy is doing to the music industry, Pietermaritzburg artists on Thursday took part in a march against music piracy. They marched through the Pietermaritzburg CBD to educate the community about the effect music piracy has on the industry. They also confiscated pirated

goods from vendors in Langalibalele Street and called for individuals pirating music to be treated as criminals because they are stealing something that does not belong to them, and then make money out of it. Marcher, gospel singer Nkanyiso Miya, said they want the perpetrators to face harsher consequences for pirating music. “This is our bread and butter - it’s painful to see our CDs being sold for

less than R20 on street corners when we work so hard on our craft. “Piracy is a crime that disregards the music industry and we appeal to authorities to take this matter seriously.” Miya said some music consumers think buying pirated music is an insignificant act that does not have a great effect on artists. The march was rounded off with performances at Market Square.

TOTAL of 200 top KZN matric pupils sacrificed a week of winter school holidays to attend the annual South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Thuthuka Development camp. The pupils gathered at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus for five days of intensive tutoring and additional support in mathematics, accounting, English, science, life skills, and career guidance. Project manager, Lethukuthula Mkhize said the camp is aimed at overcoming barriers to transformation in the accountancy profession. “Our main target market is pupils from previously disadvantaged areas. We want to increase the number of black pupils studying accounting. The country has about 40 000 chartered accountants and only 10% of those are black. The project is basically to start at grass-roots level to increase the numbers and give proper guidance.” Pupils at the camp come from all 12 KZN districts and represented 70 schools. “The response for the camps has been positive. More than 40% of the pupils who attend get the assistance they require to excel. It really

The camp also becomes a platform for pupils who are doing well to get proper funding to further their studies.

“Ideally, if we get proper funding the plan is to spread the camp all over KZN in three educational districts. We want to increase the number of pupils we accommodate to 600.” Ntokozo Fakude, a pupil at St Oswalds Secondary in Newcastle said the camp has been a great experience.

IETERMARITZBURG artists, deejays, producers and song writers filled the Winston Churchill Theatre last Wednesday at the first South African Music Conference in the city. Previously the conference was held in Johannesburg and Durban. The conference was organised by Fano Gumede in conjunction with Deejays Unite (DJU), an organisation formed by some of country’s most loved house deejays, DJ Oskido, DJ Fresh, DJ Christos, DJ Vinny DaVinci, and Greg Maloka. The conference is geared towards educating artists about production, brand building, music royalties and the copyright business. Christos and DaVinci, who have made significant strides in the industry, chaired the conference and advised artists to “think big”. “Start making music for the world, look up to the likes of Black Coffee, who recently scooped a BET award. Money is not a hindrance, if you really want to do it push yourself and make it happen. Be original, find your niche and when you become successful plough back into your community,” said Christos. The discussion also focused on music development for airplay and lyrical content with DaVinci advising that quality is always better than quantity. “No radio station will play a song that sucks. Take time with your craft, don’t be in a hurry to get airplay. We struggled for years to get our music on radio - keep working hard and persevere.” Christos said the industry was short of sound coming from

from this town.” The copyright session was presented by attorney Kaiser Khoza, who advised that it was important for artists to know and understand their rights. “You are in the copyright business - understand your rights. If you don’t

have the knowledge you will be ripped off. Do not take for granted that you will be able to read contracts from music labels on your own, because you will sign your lives away. Be careful of legal jargon, ask lawyers to help you before binding yourself to any contract.” Khoza emphasised the importance of, as an artist, having a management team. “Do not just get a friend or cousin to manage you. Get a management team that understands the performance industry, the fans industry and how you can grow as a brand. Your management should master negotiations and deal-making,” he said. Artists were also warned not to accept free gigs.

“Artists who play for free are killing the industry. Whatever level you are on, you need to be rewarded when you perform. Start with a small amount and as you build your name raise the fee. This is your job therefore you need to get paid,” said DaVinci. Gumede said the conference was a success, “We have another event lined up in the city that will further enhance our talent. We are saying Pietermaritzburg will be the hub of good music in our province of KwaZulu-Natal.” The DJU team made a commitment to make the conference an annual engagement. The Wales team, whether they won or not last night are a perfect example of this. Gareth Bale has been a proper squad member and has not asked for special treatment, even though he is a mega star at Real Madrid and he’s alongside players like Hal RobsonKanu, who was released by is 2nd division club and is currently without

a team. basic resources. I was heartbroken as I watched youngsters at a soccer training session playing without goalposts. The truth is there is no such facility in Panorama, which is disturbing considering the poor and honest residents who pay rates. The community asked the local school management if they could use their grounds for soccer training and community sports events after school hours, but the ground only has rusty and broken goalposts. After appealing to the public for sponsorship, a local businessman Segren John - heeded our plea and will be donating to the school. This afternoon I will be taking John to the school ground to show him what we need. To Mr John, thank you for saving our children and for taking care of the needy. God bless you.

Race marketing and communications manager, Lungelo Sithole, said it was important for athletes to register as early as possible. “We remind athletic clubs that R20 000 has been set aside for clubs that register the most runners for the flagship 42,2km race. “First prize in this category is R10 000, second prize is R6 000 and third prize is R4 000.” Sithole said the marathon is aimed at improving focus on athletes, while celebrating Nelson Mandela’s legacy as a nation-builder and a father of the nation. “With the Mandela Day Marathon enjoying live broadcast on SABC, it is an opportunity for athletes to show up and appeal to the corporate world to support the sport, and athletes in particular.” Event organisers have gone out of their way to make this year’s event memorable. “Athletes can be assured of a secure event, from overnight accommodation and meals, to the provision of en-route refreshments and medical services, and post-race necessities. “There will also be an athlete recovery area where athletes will be supplied with medical, physiotherapy and nutritional requirements in order to recover,” said Sithole. TOTAL OF 72 cricketers from disadvantaged backgrounds have been selected for the six teams of the elite Sunfoil Development squad. These players were selected during the closing ceremony of the 2016 Sunfoil Township Cricket Development Tournament held at Hilton College from 28 June to 2 July. For these youngsters, this could lead to inclusion in the Dolphin’s Academy and, in the long term, a professional cricketing career. They were selected from the 336 township players taking part in the tournament in which 12 teams of U15’s and 12 teams of U19 players – competed in a total of 49 matches in a T20 format over five days. This is the ninth year running that the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) Township and Rural Development Programme has staged this increasingly important event in partnership with Willowton Group, manufacturers of Sunfoil cooking oil and margarine, and the provincial Department of Sports and Recreation.
