MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

RATE residents barricaded entrances to Imbali Unit BB on Monday morning protesting over the lack of water there. Demonstrators who barricaded roads with rocks and burning tyres said water supply had run dry from February and in some areas in April.

Areas that have been the most effected include Upper BB, BB4, Unit 14 and BB5. “We have had dry taps since February in BB4, sometimes the water tanker doesn’t come into the area for days. Where are we expected to get water from? Our children are getting sick yet other areas like Unit 18 and Unit 2 have water,” said an angry resident. Residents said they decided to take

Water war brewing in Imbali Unit BB

“We have had to miss work and school because of this. Even the clinic in the area has been without water for months, how are we expected to take our medication? They talk about the importance of hygiene, but we have no water, which is a basic necessity.” The residents said that they had tried to arrange a meeting with Mayor Themba Njilo on Sunday, but were unsuccessful. “He told us he had a meeting in Richards Bay and could not attend, but promised that we would have water on Sunday, and we are still waiting.” Speaking to the Maritzburg Echo on Tuesday, Ward 17 councillor Thamsanqa Sithole said the community needed to understand that no one was shutting water off deliberately. “The situation is really bad, but we are working with the municipality to ensure water is supplied to all 10 areas under Ward 17. The water capacity in the reservoir supplying this area is very low, especially for areas higher up the valley. “When water tankers are sent to the affected areas we ask people to fill up their buckets because we do not know when the water will return.”

are convinced there is water, it’s just being tampered with deliberately.” Another resident said if there was a shortage of water there would be a water-shedding schedule. “We understand that with the drought we would have water shortages every now and then, but why is there no water-shedding schedule in place like how Eskom did with the load shedding? “Why are we the only area that is being starved of water. We don’t understand how we cannot have water yet we share the same reservoir with other areas that have water. We want the new mayor and Brenden Sivparsad [Msunduzi Water and Sanitation manager] to come and explain to us how that is possible. “We suspect this is being done on purpose so that this company can continue benefiting from the municipality. We had water on Friday night after we went to switch on the water tank valves. They tell us we have to wait for 10% capacity, but we have waited long enough and we are now tired,” said another resident. Residents complained that this dire situation has caused them to miss work on a number of occasions.

ULFILLING a promise made in March by the deputy minister of telecommunications and postal services and Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, last Friday Zamazulu Secondary School received a fully functional computer centre with fast wireless connection. The centre, with 20 new laptops, is part of a plan by government to roll out information and communications technology (ICT) and broadband at schools in and around Imbali to improve teaching and learning methods. Addressing pupils at the school, head of information technology in the office of the premier, Shaun Emslie, said the new laptops will enable pupils to get information via the internet. “We are here to follow up on the promise we made earlier this year. We are passionate about schools and technology, it important for all career fields and our plan is to continue connecting more schools. We have kept our end of the bargain and are now waiting for the Zamazulu class of 2016 to produce exceptional matric results.” Emslie warned pupils to only use the laptops to improve learning. “Don’t use it for bad things, be vigilant and

use them only to gain knowledge. Respect the computers and keep them in good condition for those coming after you,” he said. Speaking on behalf of the company that donated the laptops, Pinnacle Africa, Omkar Bhudoo said he hopes they will open pupils’ minds to the exciting world of information technology. “We are excited to provide the laptops to the school to better the teaching environment. We hope they will make a big difference in your lives and the community, and we hope they influence you to choose information technology as a career choice. Look after these machines and don’t damage them.” Principal Xolani Ndlela said the school has been struggling for 10 years to get a fully functional computer centre. “Our pupils had to go to the library in town to access the internet and some of them didn’t have money to access that facility and would end up producing assignments that were of poor quality, hand-written and not well researched. “This is a start of a new era for them and now they have no excuse to submit work of poor quality.” Ndlela promised that the computer centre will be well looked after.

Angry mob kills whoonga addicts NOKUTHULA KHANYILE

N article in Maritzburg Echo on 25 August, reported on three Edendale whoonga addicts - Edwin Mazibuko (27), Scelo Ndlela (31) and Siyabonga Mazibuko (27) - who said they were tired of being slaves to whoonga and wanted to quit. However, two of the three, Mazibuko and Ndlela, have been killed. It is alleged that an angry mob killed them on Tuesday morning for apparently stealing a Plasma TV in KwaDambuza. According to police the incident occurred at around 4am. Plessislaer police spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela said they were attacked by more than 50 people after they were suspected of stealing the TV. “They were tracked down by angry community members, who took them from where they were living in Edendale, to an unknown location where they attacked them.

Edwin Mazibuko and Scelo Ndlela (first and second left) were alleg edly killed by an angry mob. With them is Pastor Magic Khanyile (second right), and Siyabonga Mazibuko. At around 6am their battered bodies were recovered in a sports field behind the Edendale Lay Centre by a passer-by, who alerted the police.” Ndlela had already succumbed to his injuries and Mazibuko was rushed to Edendale Hospital where he later died. In the 25 August article Mazibuko had said he was tired of being a slave to whoonga. “I would like to continue with my

life because growing up I had high aspirations for my future and now it seems as if I’ve reached a dead end.” He said he started doing drugs to numb the emotional pain after his parents died. Ndlela at the time told Maritz-

burg Echo that people in the community did not see them as humans anymore. “We are always the first suspects when crime happens in the community. People do not see us as human, we are seen as animals who do unthinkable things. Even small children are scared of us, they run away when they see us.” Pastor Magic Khanyile, who was determined to help them fight the addiction said he is devastated. “I am still in shock, we were going to have a meeting today [Thursday] to discuss further steps to help them fight the addiction with Sanca and stakeholders, who came forward offering help when the article came out. It is truly a sad day - this is not the ending we were anticipating.” Khanyile said they were able to track down Ndlela’s father in Matatiele and he said he would come to collect his body for burial. Ntombela said the police were investigating two cases of murder but no arrests had been made.

Determination knows no bounds NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za

P

ROVING that all it takes to be successful is hard work and determination is Khetho Nzama, an orphan, now in his third year of law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, the 21-yearold said he grew up without knowing his parents and only met his father for a short period before he died. “I never knew who my mother was. I grew up with my grandmother, but because she was unemployed she couldn’t look after me and at the age of eight I went to Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home and lived there for the next 10 years. “I went to Alston Primary School and matriculated from Haythorne Secondary in 2013. “I had absolutely nothing growing up. When you don’t have any guidance from parents or siblings it’s easy to get involved in wrong things. You feel as though you have no one and even God is not on your side. “But I realised eventually that I needed to make something of my life so I could live the life I wanted and focused, put my head down and studied hard,” he said. Nzama was supported by various people along the way after school, who also paid for his application and registration fees and he was

awarded a bursary from Natalia for three years of his studies. In the beginning of his studies he had to walk from his home in Woodlands to university in Scottsville on some days because he could not get a lift into town and did not have money for a taxi. “It was tough, but somehow I managed, and now it’s better,” he said. He added that it has always been his dream to be a lawyer because he wants to fight for the rights of women and children who are abused and taken advantage of. Nzama passed everything since his first year in varsity and, in his latest results, received As and Bs. “It was always a dream of mine to study. When I was young I used to pray a lot and that gave me the faith. I needed to do well and trust that everything will be okay. Most young people, who are faced with the same circumstances I was faced with, get involved in drugs or end up on the street. “I want them to know that if I can become someone, so can they. They don’t have to give into peer pressure. You just need to have faith in something, even if Christianity is not your religion, believe in something and pray that something better comes along,” said Nzama. Nzama is looking for funding for his fourth year at university to get his LLB degree.

For more information about Nzama, contact the Maritzburg Echo offices at 033 355 1358.

N ambitious medical doctor from KwaDambuza is seeking financial assistance to complete her MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degrees. Sinenhlanhla Ngubane (20), currently doing her first year of medicine at the University of Pretoria, said if she gets the financial assistance she requires, she be able to complete her degree in 2021and not be forced to drop out of university. One of six children, Ngubane matriculated from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High in 2014, and despite getting four distinctions in her final results, was not initially accepted for the MBChB programme. “In matric I was not accepted to study medicine because of my Grade 11 results, which were not that great. So I was placed in the biological sciences bridging course programme at the Mamelodi campus in 2015 where they had to pick 20 out of 200 students to get into the MBChB programme this year.” Her determination to be a doctor inspired her to study hard and this year she was finally accepted into the programme. “I worked hard and focused on my studies because I knew I didn’t want to be anything else but a doctor and through God’s grace I was accepted.” Supported by her 56 year-old mother, Sibongile, who is an administration clerk at the Department of Education, she said finances are limited. “My father is a retired teacher and my mother has become the breadwinner. With the little she has, she is putting me and my younger brother

Speaking to Maritzburg Echo Sibongile said things are not easy. “Since her father retired things have not been easy, We tried to help her apply for bursaries, but our efforts have been unsuccessful. We even tried to get forms from the Department of Health for a bursary, but failed, We will appreciate any help we can get.”

REY’S Hospital in Pietermaritzburg became the KZN sixth hospital to join the “green” movement by making the hospital more eco-friendly. Other hospitals include Edendale, King Edward, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central, Ngwelezana and Port Shepstone. The hospital joined the internationally recognised Global Green and Healthy Hospitals initiative, which serves to create a global network of hospitals and health systems seeking to improve environmental performance. Luqman Yesufu from groundWorks and Global Green and Healthy Hospitals said hospitals generate significant environmental health impacts both upstream and downstream from service delivery, through the natural resources and products they consume, as well as through waste they generate. The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) initiative is built on 10 interconnected green goals which if implemented will have a tremendous impact on the environment as a whole. The ten interconnected goals include; leadership, waste, chemicals, building, pharmaceuticals, energy, purchasing, water, food and transportation. During hospital operation, if these interconnected goals are not done in a sustainable way then hospitals will be a source of harm rather than a place of healing. Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, Doctor Ben Bilenge CEO of Grey’s Hospital, said that the decision to join the initiative was taken with two goals in mind - for waste management, to protect the public health by reducing the volume of toxic waste produced by the hospital and energy saving. Bilenge said that the hospital will engage in activities to become more transparent in all aspects of waste management by conducting feedback sessions on the volume of generated anatomical, infectious, sharps, pharmaceutical, cytotoxic and general waste produced. “This allows visual representation of the quantity of waste we are sending to the landfills and in turn we are contributing to environment and climate change. We have identified our high turnover areas that are generating large quantities of infectious waste and have put measures in place how to reduce this production,” he said. Other activities include signage on bins around the hospital to encourage correct waste segregation by both personnel and patients,

Why going green is im portant Going green is important be cause our climate is changing with significant threats to our health as t he World Health Organisation estimates that there are 150 000 deaths a year due to climate change of which 85% are young children. Healthcare needs to respond to this by being prepared and efficient in providing health care services. Furthermore, healthcare needs to “clean its own house” and lead by example by joini ng this movement of GGHH members that h ave rec ognised the connection between human health and the environment by dem onstrat ing this understanding through its govern ance, strategy and operation

e-waste collection of all types of batteries are being centralised, printer toners are exchanged on a one-to- one basis and Green Office collects toners for recycling. Bilenge said that overall the hospital is simply becoming more aware of their use of energy and waste disposal so activities from as simple as switching off lights in areas that are not in use to eradicating all mercury containing items. “We want to reduce the environmental impact and carbon footprint of our facilities and operations. In doing so, we will be promoting the health and well being of patients, staff and community members - both inside and outside the walls of our facilities,” said Bilenge. Yesufu said hospitals have an enormous environmental footprint. “Not only do they produce tons of waste, they require large amounts of energy, often from fossil fuel-based electricity, such as coal and oil, to maintain and run its operations. “Majority of the waste generated from the hospital often end up in an incinerator or landfill. These incinerators when in operation release toxic cancerous gases such as dioxins and furans into the atmosphere, thereby poisoning the very same people it serves who often end up as patients. “The landfill sites are often plagued by large amounts of methane gases which is a greenhouse gas. Increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere results in global warming and climate change,” he said. For more information about the GGHH initiative visit www.green hospitals.net

Have you ever thought of the story behind an abandoned baby?

“I was raped by the father of my child. My mother told me I was not welcome in our house if I had another baby. I gave birth in the veld and left my baby there. I can’t even care for myself, how would I care for a child?” 18-year-old girl from Tembisa

Now you know, become part of the solution: Child abandonment shouldn’t be happening in a caring world. Help someone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy make informed and responsible decisions for their child and themselves, by calling 0800 864 658 or visiting www.crisispregnancy.org.za for information, options and support.

TOTAL of 242 buses will transport maidens from all over KwaZulu-Natal to Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma this weekend for the annual Umkhosi woMhlanga (reed dance). Of that number, 75 have been co-ordinated by the KZN Department of Arts and Culture and the remainder by municipalities, this according to a statement issued by the Department of Arts and Culture on its state of readiness to host this event. “As per the usual safety regulations,

Royal palace to host 32rd reed dance all transport suppliers must have provided their licenses, permits and insurance documentation, passenger liability, for validity checking. Districts that have organised their own transport have been advised to carry out thorough inspections to ensure the road worthiness of the vehicles they will provide,” said the statement. The department said it will be

working in partnership with the Zulu royal household, provincial Department of Transport and the SAPS throughout the weekend to ensure the safety of the maidens. “The registration process of all maidens has already taken place and all those under the age of 21 have had their indemnity forms signed by parents or guardians,” said the statement.

The three-day programme includes a career expo with the KZN Film Commission, DTI, the National Youth Development Agency, government departments and various tertiary institutions. “This is to expose the maidens to possible career paths as well as to advise them on the critical skills needed in the fields they want to enter.”

Non-schooling maidens will present their reeds to King Goodwill Zwelithini on 9 September and the rest of the girls on the following day. He will deliver his main address on Saturday 10 September. The department warned that no alcohol will be allowed at the venue and authorities will conduct random roadside breathalyser tests. - Supplied.

PIETERMARITZBURG house deejay, Linda Mngadi, will officially be opening a deejay academy. Mngadi, who has been in the industry for 20 years, said after seeing the lack of proper skills in the deejay industry in the city he decided to open Big Fun DJ Academy. “This academy will focus on teaching the true art of beat mixing on turntables and CDJs. “There will only be a limited number of people accepted because we are going to have oneon-one sessions.” Mngadi is opening the academy in conjunction with his friend and former DJ, Fano Gumede of Fanotainment. Gumede was one of the organisers of a music conference that was held in Pietermaritzburg in June. Mngadi said the academy currently accepts anyone who wants to register. “Ladies and gents of any age can join. “This is going to be a two-month course that will also include a crash course on events co-ordinating, and how to handle yourself as a professional DJ,” he said.

‘Treepreneurs’ plant for Arbor Week

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

For Arbor Week, Forest Hill Primary School received 40 indigenous trees Wild Plum, Waterber ry, White Pear, Natal Fig donated by Wildlands. These young trees will not only beautify, they will provide shade for pupils and be used as a noise buffer as the school is adjacent to the main road. Forest Hill Primary is one of the many Wildlands’ Recycling Schools. WILDLANDS started Arbor Week with several tree-a-thons nationwide from 1 to 7 September planting 100 000 trees. Wildlands Trees for Life project was started in 2004 in Kwa-Zulu Natal, where community members were encouraged to plant indigenous trees at home as a way of “growing” themselves out of poverty. The project expanded at a rate Wildlands could have never anticipated. The “tree-preneurs” barter the trees they grow with Wildlands for water tanks, bicycles, building materials, health and wellness hampers or groceries. Each of the 100 000 trees this coming week were grown and nurtured by tree-preneurs and each tree has a story linked to it. Tree-a-thon events are being hosted by Wildlands in Durban, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Magaliesburg, Acornhoek and the

Western Cape, with support from their partners and donors. About 5 200 indigenous trees were planted in Cornubia, north of Durban, another 5 000 in Richards Bay, 4 000 in Magaliesburg, Gauteng, Pietermaritzburg, Acornhoek and the Western Cape with the assistance of partners. A further 86 000 trees have been distributed to just under 2 500 schools, through the Department of Education, and will be planted throughout Arbor month to further build on our greening efforts. “We are always honoured to be joined by our corporate donors and partners at our treeplanting events as they never think twice about getting their hands dirty. They share our organisation’s passion for sustainability and our environment,” said Wildlands’ deputy director of marketing, Lauren van Nijkerk. - Supplied.

new YouthForLions awareness campaign which of ficially launched on 1 September. This global movement is aimed at informing and engaging the youth around the world around the re alities of volunteering, cub petting, walking with li ons and other forms of animal interaction, and their contribution to canned hunting. The successful run of the Blood Lions documen tary released last year, brought the horrors of the South African predator breeding, canned hunting, and lion bone trade industries to light. The film’s powerful visual narrative as well as a subsequent global awareness campaign have brought the world’s attention to this important cause. “Young people are being conned and we want them to know what’s really happening. The reality is that volunteering, cub petting, walking with lions and all other forms of animal interaction on lion farms are contributing to canned hunting and what’s more, this is putting hundreds of thousands of rands in the hands of these ranch owners,” said YouthForLions campaign driver, Amy Webster. Youth around the world are encouraged to “roar” for lions and post their roars on the campaigns Face book page @YouthForLions. Supplied.

Scottsville Primary wins Water Explorer trophy F

IVE of South Africa’s top Water Explorer teams gathered at the Durban Botanical Gardens last week to present their water-saving efforts to an expert panel. The teams included Scottsville Primary, Hawkstone Primary, St Peters Girls School, Manor Gardens Primary and Glenridge Pre-primary, each with their own unique story of how they had made a difference to their water usage over the past year. The WESSA Water Explorer Programme is an online fun, inspiring and educational programme that empowers pupils across the world to lead joint action on water issues for their schools and communities. Schools earn points as they complete a variety of water challenges and through their efforts to manage their water more wisely will have the opportunity to win many appropriate prizes to assist them in achieving their water goals. Each country selects their top five schools of which one is selected as the national winner. “Water Explorer has been so important for us as it has given us a great way to remind people about how important water is in this time of severe

drought and how much we are wasting, and how we can change this doing simple things.

“For an example we collected over 13 000 litres of grey water from our school’s families which took the mes-

sage back home reminding everyone of how much water they use daily just for cleaning. We then used this water

ECHO on our gardens and for flushing our toilets,” said Grade 6 pupil, Joshua Pillay from Scottsville Primary. Scottsville Primary School was selected as the top team for 2016 amid tough competition. The judges were impressed with the way the whole school participated across a number of water explorer challenges. This included a massive grey water saving campaign, replacing all aged pipes where there had been lots of slow leakages; taking a very active stand on the fracking issue. The schools has collected a few hundred signatures and have a mobile fracking display explaining the water related problems with fracking, that it taken out at any public opportunity. Their long standing recycling facility has also ensured that millions of litres of embedded water have been indirectly saved. Most importantly the school has embraced the programme and the children have been active in reporting about their efforts on the Water Explorer newsreel blog. Scottville Primary was awarded the Water Explorer Tap trophy and R10 000 toward their eco-projects. They will also be representing South Africa at the International Water Explorer event in London in October. ”The programme has been lifechanging for many of us at Scottsville. It has been so very motivating for everyone concerned from our pupils, parents and staff. It is couldn’t be a more important programme to be part of in South Africa, in light of the water crisis we are in,” said teacher Carmen Cawood. - Supplied.

The Mandela Day Trail Run is the fastest growing trail run in KwaZulu Natal offering runners great atmosphere and a stunning route. Set in the hills of the Midlands, the third trail run kicked off the weekend of festivities of the Mandela Day Marathon. The race also boasts impress ive prize money, drawing a competitive field over the 15km, eight kilo metre and four kilometre courses. Runners are made to work hard on some challenging climbs and it was Givemore Mudzinganyama, who scored a hattrick, who won the race in 2014 and 2015, on the longer championship course. EWLY elected mayor of Umgungundlovu District Municipality Thobekile Maphumulo, and the Umgungundlovu District Municipality Municipal Manager, Sibusiso Khuzwayo visited to an athlete whose Mandela Day Marathon race nearly ended in a tragedy. Maphumulo and Khuzwayo visited Anesh Owthar in his Chatsworth home after he suffered a near-fatal heart attack moments after finishing his first 42.2km Nelson Mandela Day marathon on 28 August. With 25 Comrade Marathons to his name Owthar, who finished in 5:34, said it was very challenging. “The weather was hot. I normally finish 42km races without having to walk, but this time I had to.” He said while relaxing with friends and other Mandela Day Marathon runners after his race he developed severe chest pains. “My running mates from Fields Hill Water Athletics Club quickly alerted paramedics and I was rushed to St Anne’s Hospital.” He said on arrival at the St Anne’s trauma unit, doctors suspected a heart attack and his wife was notified and had to drive to Pietermaritzburg from Chatsworth. “I feel indebted to my fellow runners who even offered to pay for my entry into hospital. Doctors discovered a blood clot in my heart, which caused a massive heart attack.” He told Maphumulo he was feeling 99% better. The mayor presented him with an array of Mandela Day Marathon memorabilia and advised that next year he should opt for the 10km walk. “You shouldn’t run the 42.2km race again. I will walk the 10km race with you and your family next year,” Maphumulo told Owthar. Owthar said he was honoured to have the mayor and the MM visit his home. “It just shows their compassion, which embodies the spirit of the race and that of Nelson Mandela”. - Supplied.
