Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. Sfiso Ncwane.

L

OCAL gospel artists reacted with shock at the news of the death of Kulungile Baba hit-maker Sfiso Ncwane (37). Ncwane died at Fourways Life Hospital on Monday following a short illness, which began on Sunday evening at his Johannesburg home. A statement issued by the family confirmed he had been diagnosed with kidney failure and was later moved to intensive care where he took his last breath in the arms of his

wife Ayanda. Paying tribute Nkanyiso Miya of Pietermaritzburg gospel duo Nathi and Nkanyiso said he was shocked by the news. “At first I thought it was an internet hoax or that someone was playing a prank on us, but when I spoke to a few industry friends who confirmed it, I was shattered. I knew Sfiso and we would often meet at shows. He was very humble and always full of jokes. “His death is a great loss to the gospel industry, but we cannot question God,” said Miya. Dumi Mkokstad said, when

asked by Echo how he felt, he didn’t know what to say. “I don’t know what to say, I’m actually getting emotional just thinking about it. Can I ask you to call me back another time because I’m about to go on stage.” Founder of Pietermaritzburg gospel choir, Sounds of Salvation Thula Mhlophe said it was unbelievable because he was with Ncwane at the Crown Gospel Awards last weekend. “He seemed fine and was in good spirits and joked with everyone. I am shocked by the sudden death of a man who was so humble and who

loved his family and his craft. “Sfiso would perform for free at some shows for the love of music. He sacrificed a lot to get to where he was musically. He will be missed and he has left a huge gap that no one will

ever fill.” Mhlophe said because Ncwane relocated to Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal artists will organise a memorial service for KZN and make plans to attend his funeral on the weekend.

Pupils who write matric in a second language given ‘percentage boost’ MATRICS whose mother tongue is not English or Afrikaans, but who study in these languages, will get three percent added to their final year exam marks until 2022. Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, said in a statement yesterday all matric pupils who study in English as their second

language will benefit from this policy in all their subjects. After serious consideration of this matter, Umalusi Council decided to review its previous decision to phase out language compensation from 2014 to 2017, which entailed gradually scaling it down from four percent in 2014 to onepercent in 2017, said spokesperson Lucky Ditaunyane.

RE V I V E

Ditaunyane said challenges experienced by pupils who were being taught in English prompted the introduction of a five percent language compensation in 2000. He said since then, despite the Department of Basic Education’s genuine efforts to address gaps created by the use of English as Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT), much

After that, I want to study medicine because I want to help sick people.” Mzamo said he encouraged her to apply because he could see she had potential. “She is a very smart girl, she does well at school and always receives awards for being top of her grade. Municipal employees recognised at awards >> Coveted awards are aimed at entrenching professionalism NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com

T’S all systems go for the third annual Msunduzi Municipality Service Excellence Awards to take place tomorrow at the Royal Showgrounds. The coveted awards are aimed at entrenching professionalism as well as to recognising, rewarding and encouraging excellence in the Msunduzi

Municipality by awarding employees for innovative and creative service delivery. Speaking at the official media launch for the awards on Monday, Msunduzi mayor Themba Njilo said the municipality strives to recognise its workers as the pursuit of excellence requires dedication in order to incubate a culture of selfless giving. “Our job is a very difficult yet an exciting one. This is so because staying

in the good books of our residents where service delivery is concerned is not a walk in the park and yet when we do the best on our side it brings joy knowing that we have made our residents happy. “The awards recognise selfless men and women who sacrifice their time and expertise to provide service delivery.” Njilo said the awards were a way for municipality to give thanks and praise to employees who go out of their way at all times in ensuring that the citizens

of Pietermaritzburg are well taken care of. “We want the employees to know that their hard work, dedication, and perseverance don’t go unnoticed. We believe that in our mandate for service delivery we must also ensure that our workers are happy because a happy worker is a productive worker.” The awards are divided into nine categories with four special awards to be handed out by the mayor, speaker, and municipal manager. Nominations were open for four weeks in September and the process was assessed by independent adjudicators recommended by the office of the premier. Njilo said the awards have been taken into careful consideration and that the procedure was fair and of high standards “The assessment and adjudication

The process involves measuring the performance of the municipal employees in implementing the Batho Pele principles.

A FAITH healer, found guilty of sexually violating and murdering a 12-year-old Pietermaritzburg girl in 2012, was sentenced to life plus seven years’ imprisonment on Friday. Judge Piet Bezuidenhout imposed the sentence on Mzokhona Sibisi (37), after finding there were no compelling or substantial circumstances that would allow the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum penalty for the brutal murder of Ayanda Sibiya. After being sexually assaulted in a forest, the child was hit over the head with a pickaxe handle, killing her. Her body was dumped in a water tank at a nearby church yard. A doctor testified that extremely severe force must have been used to cause her injuries. She suffered a fractured skull, which was found to have “caved in” in several places. She was also stabbed four times in the head. The motive for the incident was unclear as Sibisi testified that he had no recollection of what had happened. He told the court that he had a “bad dream” in which he killed the child in response to the girl’s mother instructing him to make sure she was dead. Sibisi said he had woken in his own bed but

strikes across South Africa have caused much upheaval and instability in the education sector with a concern that the 2016 academic year might have to be suspended. Many students face the fears of having to repeat another year should they be denied the opportunity to write their final examinations. With much relief for staff and students, the examination periods at the majority of public institutions, although delayed, will be completed within the year. Although the intensity of the strikes appear to have died down, the implications of unsettled disputes and the lack of an accepted final resolution still leaves many aspects regarding the matter of fee elimination unresolved. This instability has a number of implications, overall. Echo spoke to private tertiary institutions in Pietermaritzburg to find out how private universities are, if at all, affected by the strikes. “As a private higher education provider we are entirely dependent on student fees and we need to provide high quality education that is affordable to our students and helps us to sustain their educational environment. “Our students generally understand this and partner with us to benefit from the value of what we offer,” said Louise Wiseman, speaking on behalf of the IEE’s Varsity College.

Wiseman said there are serious issues facing the higher education of students in the country. “We have many ambitious young people with aspirations that are not being met. “While we respect and recognise the right of students to demonstrate and express their opinion, we hope the situation can be resolved as quickly as possible so that higher-education students can continue with their studies.” Smalls Nadasen of Oval International said the strikes have not had any negative effects on the institution. “These strikes have had no negative influence on the Oval, Pietermaritzburg campus. However, there is definitely a possibility that students and parents have more positivity in enrolling in the private sector simply because of stability.” At the same time, private institutions also agreed they do not aim to benefit from the instability by poaching students from the public sector. Wiseman believes that the instability in the public education sector has not fed into private institutions. “We believe that both private and public sectors are critical for providing education, thus there are no additional opportunities for private institutions as such as a result of the strikes,” said Wiseman. Generally private universities in Pietermaritzburg feel positive towards the new year and are confident about offering quality education, despite the public sector instability this year.

Although the intensity of the strikes appear to have died down, the implications of unsettled disputes and the lack of an accepted final resolution still leaves many aspects regarding the matter of fee elimination unresolved.

ITH KZN deemed as an HIV/Aids high-risk area along with Gauteng and Mpumalanga, the three provinces are set to benefit from $24 million the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief will provide. Rachael Rawlinson, chief operations officer at CareWorks, said the funding is prioritised to HIV/Aids prevalent areas and will be spent on the medical male circumcision (MMC) programme. It cames as welcome news on

‘Feathers fly’ as Rainbow to retrench SABELO NSELE and OMEGA MOAGI THOUSANDS of workers in the poultry industry are set to lose their jobs in January 2017. According to Food Allied Workers’ Union (Fawu) general secretary Katishi Masemola, 1 300 workers from KZN’s iconic chicken producer, Rainbow Chicken, will be retrenched next year. Masemola said two other large chicken producers were considering retrenching staff too. Feathers flew on Tuesday as hundreds of workers marched to the provincial legislature to demand an end to “EU chickens dumping”, which they said is responsible for the job loses in the sector. Masemola said the situation had reached crisis stage, saying there was not the luxury of time in this matter. He demanded action be taken. Masemola gave the provincial Department of Economic Development and the provincial cabinet two days to respond to the demands and said the union will continue to roll out mass action

World Aids Day, and is projected to run over the next five years. Rawlinson said MMC has been promoted as a way to curb the infection rate as it has been proven to reduce a man’s risk of contracting HIV through heterosexual sex by up to 60%. “In a country like ours with nearly seven million people living with HIV, this cannot be ignored,” she said. She said the Department of Health and other MMC partners have made a tremendous difference to the lives of the more than 2,3 million men who opted to be circumcised, a tremendous achievement in the fight against HIV. Rawlinson said South Africa will soon reach a point where people on antiretroviral treatment will outstrip new HIV infections, which signifies a turning point in the HIV epidemic. “The next five years will see the national MMC programme adopt a more ambitious approach to fast-track medical male circumcision among HIV-negative males between the ages of 15 and 49 in an effort to achieve the new target,” said Rawlinson. Rawlinson said there are many other benefits of male circumcision such as diminishing the risk of women contracting the human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer and warts. According to Rawlinson, by 2020, the World Health Organisation wants 25 million men across the 14 priority countries in Africa to be circumcised. “This effectively means that the annual number of MMCs performed in these regions must more than double to reach the target. “Achieving 80% MMC prevalence among sexually active men in the next few years, could avert 3,4 million HIV infections by 2025,” she said.

should they get no joy. Managing director of Rainbow Chicken, Scott Pitman who wore a red T-shirt and joined the protesters in the march, described Tuesday as a sad day. He urged government to intervene, saying something can be done to prevent the job losses. The premier’s special adviser, Linda Zama, said she will express the “urgency” that needs to be given to the memorandum by the provincial government. “These grievances are not unreasonable at all,” she said. Economic Development MEC Sihle Zikalala said the department had formed a task team to look into the matter. “We are aware of the challenges faced by the poultry industry in our province and in the country, in general. In this regard, we have made a decisive intervention by appointing a task team that is working with all the industry players, including labour, to find a lasting solution to this challenge. While this is a complex matter owing to the interconnectedness of the South African economy to the global economy, we believe that it is in our interest to work together to find a solution,” he said.

HE new chairperson for the Umgungundlovu District Community Tourism Association (UDCTA) is determined to deal with transformation in the tourism industry. Lwazi Nsele, who recently took over the reins, said he wants to integrate the township and rural tourism products to encourage more domestic tourism activities. UDCTA is an organisation made up of tourism associations from all seven municipalities under Umgungundlovu District. The association seeks to ensure that the industry is unified and speaks with one voice when engaging stakeholders on issues affecting tourism. “Our duty is to co-ordinate all tourism-related activities within a particular district and local municipality. We integrate provincial tourism objectives into the district and local plans and priorities and make recommendations to councils.” Nsele said one of their main objectives is to strengthen local tourism potential and facilitate the integration of tourism plans to the broader development objectives of the municipalities. “We look after the interests of tourism businesses and tourism organisations and ensure that they run smooth and get whatever assistance they require from the municipalities. One thing we understand in tourism is one can’t do things alone, all stakeholders must market the district together,” said Nsele.

Ntombela said a taxi driver belonging to the Edendale Taxi Association was shot at Esigodini, near Edendale and the private security company hired by the association swarmed to the scene of the shooting. “They found a BMW with three occupants and they searched them and two of the occupants were found in possession of licensed firearms. “When they went to the other taxi, a security personnel member pointed a firearm at the driver while other security guards searched the conductor and the standoff ensued,” said Ntombela. He said both parties opened similar cases against each other. He also confirmed the arrest of six security personnel and two civilians. The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in Pietermaritzburg said the rift was caused by the illegal operators, who started their own illegitimate taxi association. The taxi regulator also raised concerns around commuters’ safety after shots were fired at the scene. An official from Santaco, who asked to remain unnamed due to the sensitivity of the issue, said Santaco only recognises the Edendale-Esigodini Taxi Association as the legitimate operator in the area. But the defiant community of Esigodini insisted on forming their own taxi association which is not even registered with the Department of Transport. On Monday, commuters were caught in the crossfire as the two taxi rivals clashed over the taxi route. According to eyewitnesses, a ferocious brawl broke out just after 6 am when the so-called illegals blockaded the road. Subsequently, an armed private security company, which was hired by the Edendale-Esigodini Taxi Association to protect the legal operators, was called in to quell the tension; however, violence flared up resulting in several shots being fired. A Santaco official said the security company was only retaliating after the illegals opened fire at them. “We don’t want to find ourselves in a situation where we resolve this issue after bloodshed. The Esigodini community wanted to form their own separate association that will be operated by the members of the community. That is something that is not consistent with the constitution of Santaco,” said the official. The recent feud was sparked after negotiations between the two rivals collapsed in the past weeks. “There have been many attempts where meetings were held to try to resolve this matter. But how can you negotiate with defiant people? “First of all they don’t have the operating permit yet they want to control the route,” said the Santaco official.

East Coast Radio presenters Darren Maule and Sky Tshabalala helped to distribute the toys. The East Coast radio team had earlier started by distributing toys at Grey’s and Northdale hospitals. This year’s Toy Story campaign, now in its 16th year, was launched in October. Thousands of toys have been donated by residents and stakeholders to be distributed to underprivileged children in hospitals, homes,

T’S a doll, thank you,” said six-year-old Snenhlanhla Madlala with a smile on her face after receiving a toy. Snenhlanhla is one of the many children at Edendale Hospital’s three paediatric wards who received new toys last Thursday from East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game.

and orphanages. East Coast Radio’s Leverne Robertson said they have also collected around R150 000 in cash donations. “This money will be used to buy food hampers that will help feed children during the December holidays when they will not have access to school meals.” Leverne said in the spirit of Christmas they encourage everyone to donate.

“We encourage people to give - no one gets poor by giving. We need to remember people who are not fortunate at this time of the year.” Maule said it was heartwarming seeing the smiles on the children’s faces after giving them toys. “I always look forward to this day with anticipation, and dread - these are children, who are sick and from poor communities. “It is wonderful to bring a smile to their faces, but it is also heart-

HE taxi industry in KwaZuluNatal believes major strides have been made in the province’s roads to reduce the number of taxi accidents. Preparing for the festive season rush, the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) in KZN has urged both taxi operators and drivers to continue working hand-in-hand in ensuring that commuters arrive at their destinations safely. One way of making sure this happens is by ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy. Santaco spokesperson Mandla Mzelemu commended the concerted efforts of organisations, operators and drivers to diminish the number of fatal road accidents. “Drivers must always be aware that they are transporting people and they should ensure that their safety is first priority. “We, as the organisation, have made every effort in the province by mobilising all the region’s taxi ranks by spreading the word of safety and engaging with commuters. “We appeal to our drivers to follow the road rules, to travel within the recommended speed limit and avoid overloading,” he said. Making reference to the recent head-on collision between a bus and a minibus taxi that was travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Empangeni on November 15, in which five people were killed, Mzelemu said it was a preventable accident. “Long-distance drivers must have their professional driving permit with them at all times when travelling. “Operators should stop pushing long-distance drivers to carry more loads in order to make more money

unless they have substitute driver on standby. We are trying by all means to avoid preventable incidents this festive season. “Also, it is the responsibility of every driver on the roads to obey the road rules to ensure that other people driving on the same road are safe. This will help all of us,” Mzelemu said. In addition, Mzelemu said the Santaco task team, Hlokomela, which means to be vigilant in Sotho, will be visible on the road to ensure compliance. “Any taxi that should not be on the road will be impounded,” he said. He said Santaco will be briefing its task team in Durban today. Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon

The scene of the crash in which eight people, including a three monthold baby, were killed when a taxi and truck collided on the R612 outside Bulwer in July last year. Zwane issued a warning to motorists to exercise maximum caution on the road without exception. He said recent statistics show that small vehicles are the main cause of many accidents, proving that accidents caused by taxis have decreased. Zwane said they will be focusing on young drivers as they are the main culprits of reckless driving. Zwane added that drunk drivers, drivers on cellphones and speedsters will face the full might of the law if caught.

LOCAL audio and video production company is making strides in the industry after being selected to share their expertise on a SA TV show, Shift. Dope Nation Entertainment, a company owned by Khulekani Nsele (24), Lerato Nkala (23), and Sphesihle Dlamini (23), was invited by Urban Brew to form part of a discussion panel on independent filmmakers on the show. “Urban Brew invited independent filmmakers to submit their work for a chance to be profiled on Shift and also form part of a panel discussion on the growth of the film industry. After submitting we received an email inviting us to the pre-recording of the show which will be broadcast on 26 December.” Dope Nation Entertainment was established in 2008 and is currently operating in Pietermaritzburg. Nsele who is the founder and CEO said the opportunity offered to them by Urban Brew couldn’t have come at a better time. “Urban Brew is a well-established production house and this opportunity came when we needed exposure for the company at a national scale. “This is going to be our first tv appearance and we benefitted greatly from it. We managed

to make contacts in Johannesburg that will assist the music side of the business in terms of marketing our artists and taking their music to a national level,” said Nsele. He said over the years they concentrated on learning the ropes of the business by attending entrepreneurial workshops to gain knowledge to run the company. “Our aim is to take PMB craft to national level. If you look at the entertainment industry, at least 20% of it is made up of people from our city. “We want to create a platform where our talent does not have to sign to Johannesburgbased agencies to reach the mainstream, we are investing solely on promoting local talent and putting it on the map.” Nsele said the company is currently recruiting artists to sign under their recording label. “We want to start off with people, who have been in the industry, people who know what they want and have a precise plan detailing everything they want to achieve within the entertainment industry. We believe the business is more mature to offer artists contracts.” Dope Nation Entertainment has worked in productions with Tshepang Mohlomi who played Chilli Bite in the local film Izulu Lami and Nkanyiso Mchunu who played Sizwe on Muvhango. The company also was also responsible for the production of Ibhodwe.

As the lions pull at it, out of the river emerges a four-metre-long crocodile trying to drag the calf back to the river, but the powerful lions win the tussle. The leader of buffaloes organised a rescue plan to free the calf, charging in unison with determination and umshini wami. The bull leader began the offensive. The lions were already starting to prepare for a dinner-table feast. The bull leader flung away one lion and the whimpering calf was rescued. This video has been watched by millions of people across the globe. I am sure that the commander of these

buffalo “soldiers”, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, can buy it for far above R23 m. Despite demonisation of ANC veterans and stalwarts by the great looter of our 20-year-old democracy, President Jacob Zuma confronted ANC leaders fearlessly and with determination. These mid-wives of our emancipation were called by Kebby Maphatsoa “empty tins”, this “full tin” deserted MK camps and lied that he lost his army in the “battles with Boers”. The veterans and stalwarts, like buffalo troops, have a clear agenda to defend our calf, the public purse whose chief security Pravin Gordhan is under siege. By mobilising Zulu and young com-

Pastors’ actions disturbing I CANNOT help but be sad at what I have been seeing in the media recently pertaining to the pastors or preachers who are making people do things that are downright disturbing. These charismatic churches often involve robbery of the people, specifically vulnerable women. Many men also fall victim to the scams of these thugs who hide behind the name of the Lord. I was raised a Christian and part of me still believes that I am, although a lot has happened to shake my belief. The saddest part of all of this is the fact that these so-called pastors are prevalent in black communities. Is it a case of us black people being more gullible or is it a deeper sign of how desperate we have become for quick fixes? These pastors come not only with promises of marriage, money and success, they make their followers drink petrol, eat grass and more recently, people are now being sprayed

with Doom. How far do things need to go before a community wakes up and realises that they are being scammed? Some of the women, who are in the majority in these churches, have been fondled and some have slept with these pastors under the guise of the pastor inserting the Holy Spirit in them. It is truly a sad state of affairs and with all that is going on in our communities we truly do not need to be wasting our energies and time following these fake pastors. The so-called end of the world cannot come soon enough for some of us so that these fake pastors can answer for all they have done against people who are trying to find something to hold on to in a hopeless world. #fake pastors must fall. rades, Zuma is trying to blackmail the ANC. It’s a filthy and divisive tactic and it must be defeated by us in this province by mobilising the people, deepening political consciousness among our Zulu clan. It is untrue that all Zulu in the ANC in this province support the ANC lootocrats. Zuma knows that Josiah Gumede, Chief Albert Luthuli, Harry Gwala, Moses Mabhida, Dorothy Nyembe, Tryphina Njokweni, Curnick Ndlovu, Justice Mpanza, Gladys Manzi, Judson Khuzwayo and Dumisani Makhaye were not tribalist, so why is he a tribalist? Zuma harassed Khuzwayo’s spirit and disliked Thami Zulu (Boniface Ngwenya), they were Zulu. We know Blade Nzimande, Senzo

Mchunu and other Polokwane triumphalists no longer sing umshini wami. That is why the chief looter is now targeting deep rural areas like Dumbe. My standing ovation goes to Dr Albertina Luthuli, Gordhan, Ivan Pillay and Zac Yacoob for being loyal to what Chief Albert Luthuli, Ismail C. Meer, Harry Gwala, Pass Four Phungula, Pius Langa and Monty Naicker stood for. I do not remember a single day that Luthuli summoned us to Florida Road or to the Isibaya Casino restaurant demanding us to enrich her children. Luthuli, Sophie de Bruyn, Thuli Madonsela, Barbara Masekela, Getrude Shope, Barbara Hogan and Cheryl Carolus are among the women whom Bathabile Dlamini and Lindiwe

Zulu must attempt to emulate. These women veterans and stalwarts are disciples of Charlotte Maxeke, Lillian Ngoyi, Fatima Meer, Dora Tamane, Josiah Mpama, Ray Alexander, Florence Moposho, Eldah Gwala, Ruth First and Epainette Mbeki. Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma must speak out against state capture and Edward Zuma, the spokesperson of AmaNxamalala Enrichment Drive, at all costs. SIYANDA MHLONGO KwaDukuza

In memory of a true hero

exceptional ability to solve crimes. Major Pipes Haffajee, his brother Captain Zulu and Captain AK Pillay were the few officers who had the privilege of working with Stone at this very dangerous task. He alone walked up the treacherous Haythorne Hill on several occasions to observe the serial rapist and murderer of “Haythorne Hill”. I recall when I had just completed my ba sic training a number of serious robberies were being committed against the heavy duty truck drivers, who pulled over to nap overnight near the Church Street overhead bridge. The truck windows were smashed and the drivers were stabbed and before they could recover, they were robbed of their valuable loads. Another rape that comes to mind, that occurred in Claridge where the suspect fled his home in Mattisons, Stone and Haffajjee carried out surveillance on the home, which was in a sugarcane field, and torrential rain fell throughout the night until the suspect arrived the next morning, whereupon a

successful arrest and conviction followed. Stone and Captains Pakkiry, Holby, AK Pillay and the late detective Mottai were responsible for the arrest and successful conviction of numerous murders in PMB. Stone and many of these men we commended by the judges of the then Supreme Courts of South Africa. Tragedy struck the Stone family, when their only son, Sergeant Paul Stone, one night while attending a complaint, sent out his patrol dog to apprehend a suspect. The dog ran into trouble and Stone attempted to rescue his dog and was stabbed to death by the suspect. We, as the former colleagues of an exceptionally great, model policeman, salute you. May your soul rest in peace. To his family, thank you for placing him on the sacrificial altar to serve the community of Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands. Stone will be seen as a true hero and will be hailed as such for many years to come. RIP our hero. LOGAN GOVENDER Pietermaritzburg

WE must mix together until the harsh lines of division in society become indistinguishable. I think the answer to the tragedies of racism and hate in South Africa is for citizens to step out of their comfort zone more often. Racism is an insult to human digni-

ty, a cause of hatred and an ailment that devastates society. The only way to combat it is to enact strict laws against all forms of racism. Hate is colour blind.

WARRANT Officer Cecil Louis Ebenezer Stone served SAPS Mountain Rise for a number of decades with selfless dedica tion, devotion and merit. I met Stone when I was a rookie. I learnt with much sadness and regret, recently of his death in the Cape. It was not uncommon for him to work throughout the night and return to wok the following morning after just freshening up. Stone concentrated his exceptional tracking ability for serious and heinous crimes against humanity such as murder, rape, house breaking, etc. He had the pro pensity to track criminals like a bloodhound. He was accompanied by one police officer at a time and “informers”, whom he cultivated and nurtured. Stone and his group were available at any time of the day or night to exercise his

Resident concerned over drop in recyclers’ pay

ECHO

NOMPILO KUNENE

A

N Imbali bottle recycler is concerned about the drastic decrease in the payment that recyclers are receiving from the Wildlands Conservation Trust recycling project. Nsikelelo Dladla said that after his retirement two years ago, he started

collecting bottles for the project. He said the company provided recyclers with sacks and goggles which they wear as they have to break the bottles before they are collected by Wildlands

and then transported to the Consol company in Gauteng. He said earlier this year they were told by the regional Wildlands management that there would be a

decrease in the money they were paid for recycling. Dladla said at the beginning of the year he would pocket more that R400 for a sack of bottles weighing 1 000kg but last month he was paid only R150 for the same weight. “We go around the township pushing heavy trollies digging around dirt collecting these bottles. On top of that we have to break and smash these bottles until they weigh 1 000kg or more. This is hard labour and they are now paying us peanuts,” said Dladla. He said eight of his co-recyclers have stopped collecting because the pay is not worth the job anymore. “I am still passionate about recycling as it helps me provide for my family and it has become like a hobby to me.” Speaking on behalf of the Wildlands Conserva-

tion Trust, Pietermaritzburg regional recycling depot manager Noluvuyo Sixholo said the radical decrease is due to the government not funding them anymore. She said Wildlands has been receiving funding to run the recycling project from the Department of Environmental Affairs. She does not know why the department pulled out. She said before the government pulled out, the programme paid 30 cents per kilogram but now it pays 15 cents per kilogram. “We told our recyclers this beforehand. We have noticed that some have stopped recycling, but some are continuing because they really need the money. “We feel for them but there is not much we can do to assist them,” said Sixholo. She added that the recycling depot used to have 12 vehicles that collect the recycled waste around the city but they have been cut down to just four due to money issues, adding that some people working for the recycling project will also be retrenched on the 15th of this month. She said she personally does not know if her superiors have a plan other than to hope that the government funds them again. Dladla added that he is concerned about what will happen to all the uncollected recyclable waste lying around communities. “I urge Wildlands and Consol to come up with solutions swiftly, as this matter does not only affect recyclers, but the communities at large,” he said.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever Naidoo, a qualified electro-mechanical engineer, said that he got the idea of recycling light bulbs after a conversation with his father who asked him about recycling light fused light bulbs. It was then that the light bulb moment struck him.

THE inaugural Christmas Care Project was held last Friday night at God’s Family Life Centre Tabernacle with people from Pieter maritzburg getting into the Christmas spirit at the “Carols by Candlelight” event. Visitors were treated to music by the Salvation Army Brass Band as well as African In Praise, led by Grammy award winner, Lucas Bok. The event was free with the Christmas Care Project committee requesting donations of toys or nonperishable items in aid of

Mama Ntombis Community Projects (MNCP), which looks after people living in informal set tlements around the city. The aim of the event was to bring churches and their congregations in the town together to share in the Christmas spirit. The Christmas Care Project was a great success with numerous business owners in Pietermaritzburg coming on board and helping to raise food items, money or toys for those less fortunate in the city. All items were handed over to Sandra Pillay from MNCP, who will distribute the items to the families in need this festive season. PHOTO: NICOLE JOHN

T

HE annual Christmas party, hosted by the Community Chest at the Golden Horse Casino infields on Friday, was a blast, with 500 children from 11 crèches and feeding schemes in Edendale, Eastwood, Tufleni, Vulisaka, France, Oribi, Azalea and Copesville invited. The children enjoyed hot dogs, juice, milkshakes, cupcakes, pizza, ice cream, sweets and other treats throughout day. The highlight was the arrival of Santa Claus on a fire engine and receiving their Christmas presents and party packs. The Pietermaritzburg SPCA also had a Christmas market at the weekend, with hundreds coming together in a bid to raise funds for the organisation. Supplied.

Early ECHO celebration of Christmas at city hall

Connecting children with nature >> There are many benefitsey h for children when tre experience natu

T PHOTO: JONATHAN BURTON

The worldrenowned Drakensberg Boys’ Choir took to the stage at a packed Pietermaritzburg City Hall for the annual festive season concert, ‘Christmas’, presented by Music Revival, and coordinated by Christopher Duigan and Brad Glasspoole. With Duigan in solo items at the recently rebuilt Steinway and Sons grand piano, organists David Orr and Lubabalo Dyasi showcased the famous city hall organ. The choir of over 100 voices, conducted by the recently appointed artistic director, Bernard Kruger, and Charlotte Botha, lift ed the spirit with their singing of seasonal music including 'Gabriel’s Message’, 'Three Kings of Orient', and 'O, Holy Night.’ The evening was supported by Parklane Superspar, the City of Pietermaritzburg, CPW Printers, CocaCola Beverages South Africa and ‘The Witness’.

HERE is growing evidence that connecting children to nature is an important and vital part of childhood development. Stephen Kellert, a leading social ecologist in this field, who died recently, stressed that daily contact with nature is critical for children. There are many benefits for children when they experience nature and the natural world. These include their health, their productivity, their creativity, their problemsolving skills and their physical and emotional well being. A recent study in Switzerland discovered that children spend only 20 minutes a day playing outside compared to the three to four hours

during the 1970s. Connecting children to nature is the overall theme for the annual Happy Earth Festival and unites the many participating organisations. During the festival on 20 and 21 April 2017 at the Botanical Gardens, there is a strong focus on experiential learning, giving pupils from all backgrounds the opportunity to interact with nature in a positive and structured way. Participating organisations represent a wide range of environmental education. Over the past four years the core organisations of the festival include the Bessie Head Library, Botanical Society, Department of Environmental Affairs, Duct, Keep Piet-

ermaritzburg Clean Association, Karkloof Conservancy, KZN Museum, KZN Wildlife, Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation, Mphomomeni Conservation Group, PMMBT P.E.A.C.E. Project, SANBI, Sunshine Bread, UKZN, Ushaka Marine World, WESSA Umgeni Valley, WESSA Eco-Schools and Working on Fire. “We hope to reach 1 400 pupils over the two-day festival next year. The pupils are split into groups and each organisation prepares a handson activity for roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Flow managers ensure the smooth change-over thus giving the children the opportunity to be exposed to various organisations during the morning. “Apart from being a wonderful marketing opportunity for the organisations, there is also an outreach component as organisations can reach pupils who may otherwise never come into contact with their teaching and programmes,” said Dr Friederike Voigt, festival organiser. To be a part of the Happy Earth Festival in 2017 phone Voigt on 082 779 6766 or email happyearthforum@gmail.com There is always a need for sponsorship to transport pupils to the event. The organisers thank regular sponsors Rotary Club, Botanical Society, Sunshine Bread, Parklane Spar, Mayors Walk Spar, Fairfield Dairy and Bluff Meat. - Supplied.

Confederation of African Cycling president and UCI Senior Vice President, Dr Wagih Azzam will be presenting the KwaZuluNatal government and Msunduzi Municipality with the Cac Presi dent’s ‘Friends of Africa’ Award for their contribution to the development of cycling in South Africa and on the African continent.

T ®

Management and staff at our Pietermaritzburg branch wish you a happy and safe festive season and a prosperous new year.

HE KZN Government and the Msunduzi Municipality have been honoured with the Confederation of African Cycling (Cac) President’s “Friends of Africa” Award for their contribution to the development of cycling in South Africa and on the African continent. Confirmation of the award was sent to the KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu and the Mayor of the Msunduzi Municipality, Councillor Themba Njilo llast week. Cac controls the sport in Africa under the auspices of the the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which is the international cycling federation in Aigle, Switzerland. Cac has headquarters in Cairo, Egypt and the president, Dr Wagih Azzam, is also the senior vice-president of the UCI. Since 2009 Pietermaritzburg has been recognised as Africa’s Bike City and is one of only three UCI bike cities around the world – a status it shares with Copenhagen for Europe and Melbourne for Australasia. In this time, the major international events that have been staged in the city and surrounding region include two continental championships, 10 UCI World Cup events and five UCI World Championships in different disciplines. Pietermaritzburg is now recognised as the venue that has staged the most different cycling world cups and world championships anywhere in the world, which is a remarkable feat for a small city in KwaZulu-Natal relative to major cities around the world. Preparations continue for events in and around Pietermaritzburg for 2017 and beyond,

including the 2017 UCI Para Cycling Road World Championships in August and September 2017. This next world championships will see disabled sportsmen and women from 45 to 50 nations coming to the region to compete. The city hosted a leg of the UCI Para Cycling Road World Cup in 2015 and 2016 with great success and the 2017 event will be the culmination of this journey for and with these truly remarkable athletes. In terms of the award, Dr Azzam said: “Pietermaritzburg and the region of KwaZulu-Natal now have a firmly entrenched position in world cycling and the fact that so many wonderful events have been staged in the area have put the region on the world map. “It is understood and accepted that without the ongoing support of the KwaZulu-Natal government and that of the city, none of the events and programmes would have been possible and this fact was once again raised and accepted at the recent CAC management board meeting in Cairo recently. “It was proposed then and unanimously accepted that the KwaZulu-Natal government and Msunduzi Municipality and their related structures be awarded the CAC President’s “Friends of Africa” Award for their contribution to the development of the sport of cycling in South Africa and on the African continent as a whole.” Dr Azzam is to visit KZN in January 2017 where he will hand over the awards to the two recipients. - Supplied.

ADLU Davids (35), the current caretaker manager at Maritzburg United, is a man who has had his life shaped and guided by the round ball. It’s often said that once a man is involved in soccer it becomes his life, and so it has come to pass with Davids. He grew up in Athlone in the Cape and, like any youngster, was soon kicking a soccer ball and catching the eye as a more than decent striker. With a

big amateur set-up in the Cape, it wasn’t long before he was involved with the then Cape Town Spurs where he played at U15 and U17 level, before representing Saxon Rovers in the first division as a tender 16-year-old. While at Rovers, he also represented the SA U17 side. “Soccer has been my life and I continue to enjoy a long career despite not reaching 40 yet,” said Davids. “When I was 17, I was fortunate to attend trials with West Ham and Fulham in England, spending a month at

Fulham and three weeks with The Hammers. I trained with the juniors and the reserves and was as good as the players they had but nothing better.” This was an important learning curve and priceless experience for Davids and unable to get a work permit, he returned to Cape Town where he signed for Mother City. “I played with them for six months and we were relegated. Then I was offered a three-year contract with a team in Bulgaria and again fell short as after one season, the

club ran into financial difficulties which saw the foreign players not being paid,” said Davids. Again, it was back to South Africa and this time Davids hooked up with Manning Rangers, playing under Clive Barker for one-and-a-half seasons. A groin injury saw him depart Rangers and he played First Division football for Avondale Athletico and then Vasco da Gama, where he was top goal scorer and player of the year in his tenure at the club. “My performances were enough for me to be invited to play for the Louis Figo All Stars against a World XI in Portugal, where I rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in world football, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazil’s Ronaldo. Lucas Radebe and Mark Fish were among my fellow South Africans who played and I was honoured to be in such company,” said Davids. Continuing to represent different clubs, Silver Stars, which became Platinum Stars, was next on Davids’ schedule where he stayed for oneand-a-half seasons, helping the side secure the Telkom Cup. “Then, at the end of 2006, I received a call from Maritzburg United who were fighting relegation in the Premier League. I joined as a player and while we failed to fight off going down, we did enough to be promoted the following season,” said Davids. “I played with United until I was forced to retire at the end of 2011, having played most of that season with an ankle injury and surviving on painkillers. I captained the side for two seasons and in January 2012, I became assistant coach to Ernst Middendorp.” If he could not play, Davids wanted to continue his involvement in the game he loved by stepping into the coaching realm and here he has continued to make great strides. Working under Middendorp has had a massive influence on his coaching journey and, while Middendorp comes across to the public as a hard, dour man who is unafraid to speak his mind, Davids found the German just the mentor he need-

ed. “Such was my working relationship with Ernst, I moved with him from Maritzburg United to Bloemfontein Celtic when Steve Komphela arrived at United in 2014. I was at Celtic for oneand-a-half years and again followed Ernst, this time to Chippa United for six months,” said Davids. “During the 2015/16 season I returned to Maritzburg where I was assistant to Mandla Ncikazi and when he departed, I had my first taste of being in charge when I guided the team through one match before Clive Barker returned for what was a short stint.” Middendorp returned to Maritzburg United for a third time in January this year to save the club from relegation and having accomplished that, dealt a blow to the set-up when announcing his resignation last month. “There were reasons for his decision and that has to be respected,” said Davids. “However, it is a big step filling a head coach’s shoes. Getting coaching licences is a big step and takes big work, and having obtained my Uefa B licence which took two years, I am busy with the Uefa A licence, having already been to Barcelona and Holland. “I work on these in the off-season and will only get the Uefa A reward in 2018. There is still much to do and it is an ongoing learning curve. I feel I am not quite ready to become a head coach as I need to add more credentials to my CV.” This is the third time Davids has had to keep the ship on course at Maritzburg United and with the side currently mid-table in the Premier League, he hopes to secure a top-eight finish, perhaps even sneak into the top five. “We should be better than where we are but we move on from every game. I find coaching a personal investment and something worth putting energy into,” said Davids.

their awards ceremony was a big task and Poobie Naidoo’s made it possible for us. “We are very grateful and Naidoo’s ongoing community projects aim to improve communities around the greater Pietermaritzburg area,” said Jackson. Naidoo said he was privileged to be involved in improving the well being of different communities, especially children. “[The] fact is things are tough out there and a lot of businesses have taken a heavy knock around the country. But we are glad that we were able to scratch here and there to donate something in helping schools and

sporting associations. “We would also like to thank our customers for donating these items to us because this project has been made possible by them. In our shop there is a collection box to encourage our caring customers to donate old equipment,” said Naidoo. Rise & Shine Junior League winners: U11 Player of the Season - Aphiwe Ntombela. United aim to chalk up first Harry Gwala win M

ARITZBURG United defender Danso Weidlich urged his teammates to build on their impressive victory over Baroka FC and go on a long winning streak. The Team of Choice recorded their third win of the season away to Kgoloko Thobejane’s side, beating them 1-0 thanks to a goal from attacking midfielder Sheldon van Wyk. The 30-year-old centreback, who is of Ghanaian decent, but grew up in Germany, praised his teammates for showing great determination to come back from a scoreless half-time to steal all three points. ‘‘I think it’s nice when you travel far and come back with points. It’s three valuable points for us. We’re not paying attention to the table at this stage. For us it’s just important to play, not

only a good game but to get points as well. “Everyone is quite calm and focused on the next test. Football is unpredictable, we definitely need to build on the win and just keep going.

We came back a different side in the second half and showed determination.” Weidlich made his 12th appearance since signing for the Team of Choice at the beginning of the season and played a key role in helping United to victory on Sunday afternoon, and feels the win comes as a huge confidence booster to them. Speaking ahead of their next showdown against Orlando Pirates, Weidlich is hoping his side can make home advantage count. ‘‘Yes, we play Orlando Pirates, but we are also Maritzburg United. We’re not scared of anyone. The best thing is just to concentrate on our own game and with the big support at home we must put in the effort and hopefully get the three points. “I know [that] every second week we play at home we’ve been under

pressure because we haven’t won so far. But, I think the important thing is that we just keep on playing well and the results will come.” The Ghanaian-German admitted frustration at the team’s inability to string victories together this season. “We need to back results up. I know we have a quality team. We just need to be more consistent in winning games. We can’t keep going through the season with one win and then a draw. We’ve had defeats and draws we looked at after playing and thought we should have won. The focus for me is winning the next game and every

game that follows,’’ he said. The Team of Choice are still without a coach following Ernst Middendorp’s resignation recently. The vacant head coaching role is yet to be filled, with the PMB outfit due to hold a press conference today at Harry Gwala Stadium, where a new coach is expected to be unveiled. United are in ninth position on the log with 14 points after 12 outings, and next welcome the Buccaneers on Tuesday, 13 December. Kickoff is at 7.30pm.
