Aids helpline A number of reasons to celebrate 0800012322

033 817 8609 • 033 817 8608

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Have a safe and blessed festive season continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. PMB to host SA Music Conference

Boikhutso said Dawood, a general worker at Big Sky Trading in the city, has no previous convictions or pending cases. His attorney Phumlani Fakude said the incident took place at night and that even though CCTV footage had captured the shooting, Dawood would say he was among a group of other Muslim people going to mosque at the time, who were wearing the same clothing as he was. He maintains it

is a question of mistaken identity. Dawood said he would plead not guilty. Boikhutso ordered Dawood to report daily to a police station in the Durban area while awaiting his trial, and warned him not to interfere with or intimidate any witness es, or to “get any third party to try to influence the outcome” of the case in any way. The case was postponed to 12 July, pending further investigations by police.

EEJAYS Unite (DJU) in conjunction with Fanotainment is bringing the annual South African Music Conference to Pietermaritzburg. The conference, headed by house music powerhouses DJ Oskido, DJ Christos, Vinny DaVinci, DJ Fresh and Greg Maloka will, for the first

time, be held in the city on 29 June. The conference was started 11 years ago and has been taking place annually in Johannesburg and Durban. Well-known deejays who have been part of the panel at this conference over the years include DJ Black Coffee, DJ Zinhle, DJ Shimza,

Mobi Dixon and Black Motion, to name a few. Fano Gumede of Fanotainment said the conference offers deejays, producers, artists and event organisers a chance to network and is a pivotal platform for the advancement of the entertainment industry. “It has taken me three years of

AN angry outburst greeted a magistrate’s decision on Tuesday to grant bail to 25 yearold Altaaf Dawood, who is charged with shooting dead a 17yearold beggar. Dawood was granted bail of R10 000 by

Boikhutso said that in her opinion however, the state has “less than an overwhelming case” against Dawood and said it is likely to be a long time before the matter goes to trial since it was confirmed on Tuesday that police have still not recovered the murder weapon.

negotiations with the DJU committee to bring the conference to Pietermaritzburg. I pushed for the conference to come here because I believe we have amazing talent that needs to be nurtured and given the right guidance.” He added that a lot of artists are not

taught about the business aspect of the entertainment industry. “The conference is basically there to teach artists about how to turn their craft into a business. In most cases you find that the city has music producers, who are selling music nationally and internationally, guys like Mzala wa Africa, Brewed Souls, Ocean Deep, King Bayaa, Eleroots, Invaders, Rooted Channel Brothers to name a few, but they lack proper guidance.” Gumede said the conference will also touch on how artists can get their songs played on radio and how they can register with South African Music Rights Organisation. “We also want to drill in the importance of brand awareness because it is a powerful marketing tool for creative artists. Artists need to know that their image is more important than their music.” Entry for the conference is free, but space is limited. The conference will only accommodate 200 people, so artists need to register. Registration forms are available from Fano on 083 499 4122, Whatsapp 063 221 6886 or email on fanotainment@gmail.com - Supplied.

HLALONHLE Dladla (26), from Henly Dam in Elandskop, is one of four Pietermaritzburg youngsters, who on Sunday, jetted off to India after receiving a fullypaid scholarship from the Indian consulate as part of its African Scholarship Scheme. The government of India offers 52 South Africans an opportunity to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate studies in India. Dladla, a geometrics engineering graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, says the opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time. “I am very excited about the opportunity I have been given. I actually didn’t intend applying for the scholarship, I was busy job hunting and in my search ended up at the Indian consulate offices in Durban. “They told me they didn’t have any vacancies, but suggested I apply for one of their postgraduate scholarships to further my studies. I did and as they say, the rest is history.” He will be attending a two-year course doing his Masters in business administration (MBA) in IT and entrepreneurship development. “When I got the call last month, I had started working in La Lucia, but decided to quit because I saw this as an opportunity of a lifetime with long-term benefits,” he said.

I am also sad I will not be around for the birth of my first child in three months’ time, but it’s one of those sacrifices I have to make.” Bidding farewell to awardees last Friday, Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Chris Ndlela said: “Congratulations to all of you on being chosen. Make full use of this opportunity that has been given to you. “When you have completed your studies come back and plough back into the community of this city.” Ndlela urged them to not bring into disrepute the relationship the city has with India. “We have a long-standing relationship with the people of India, please consolidate it. “Go there and be good ambassadors of the City of Pietermaritzburg.” PHOTO: NOKUTHULA KHANYILE The students will each Nhlalonhle Dladla left on Sunday for a twoyear scholarship received a stipend of R5 000 from in India. Wadley Stadium transformed into dumping ground NJABULO CELE >> news@myecho.co.za EDENDALE residents are turning, what is supposed to be a bicycle park at Wadley Stadium, into a dumping ground. According to a resident, this has been going on for more than a year as people from Smero and Edendale are using the stadium as a dump site. “It a shame to see that the people of Edendale are striking for improvement while they are turning, what was supposed to be a bicycle park, into a dumping site,” said Sihle Majola. Maritzburg City Football Club games are held at the stadium. “Since last year I have reported this matter to our councillor’s office, but up until today they have never done anything about it or replied. “I once saw an Msunduzi Municipality car passing the dump site and I thought they were going to clean it up, instead they took photos and drove away.” The local councillor’s office is 50 metres away from this dumping site. Nomvelo Mthembu, who works in the same office, said she doesn’t know anything about the situation and no one has reported it before. “If this was happening in Scottville or Bisley, the councillor would have been fired and the matter would have been dealt with quickly,” said Majola

N honour of the 40th anniversary of the 1976 student and youth uprising, the David Cecil Oxford (DCO) Matiwane Foundation, in partnership with Msunduzi Museum will on 10 June host the second annual DCO Matiwane Memorial Lecture. The lecture will be delivered by Deputy Minister of Transport, Lydia Chikunga. Dr Bongani Ndhlovu from Iziko Museums in Cape Town will deliver a reflective speech.

Lecture in honour of student uprising to be held At a media briefing at the Pietermaritzburg Tourism Hub on Tuesday, Trinity Tshisevhe, Msunduzi Museum research officer, said Matiwane’s legacy symbolises the spirit of courage. “His legacy symbolises heroism and the lecture is a mark of appreciation for his distinguished legacy in areas such as education, human rights, social justice and democracy.” Tshisevhe described Matiwane as a

political activist who shaped the landscape of politics in areas like Willowfontein and Edendale. “He played a huge role in inspiring the youth of the seventies and eighties. This is why a decision was made to have the lecture in June as opposed to August.” Matiwane is famous for his one-man protest on 16 June, 1980 at the old Supreme Court gardens to

mark the fourth anniversary of the Soweto uprising. Speaking on behalf of Msunduzi Municipality, Dr Ray Ngcobo said the municipality was fully behind the Matiwane Foundation. “We have listed Matiwane’s information to be packed into a tourism product, especially because we have tourists from all over the world who are interested in learning about our

liberation heroes. We will also hand over a site to the Matiwane family after his house in Willowfontein becomes a museum in his honour,” said Ngcobo. This year’s lecture will include a careers exhibition by the Department of Transport. DoE recognises pupil talent I AM excited to mention that there has been a positive outcome with skills development among pupils in schools. I read an article in Maritzburg Echo on 26 May, which mentioned a school in the uMgungundlovu District, Hlelingomuso Primary School. The Grade R to Grade 2 pupils and Grades 3 to Grade 4 pupils came first and second in the indigenous songs category in Zulu and English at a recent event. Senior-phase conductor, Themba Ndlovu, said the pupils had been practising since the beginning of the year. He also said that “winning the awards boosts the morale of pupils, and that drives them to improve”. He added: “Not everyone can excel academically and we believe that if pupils have a talent, it needs to be developed.” This proves that the Department of Education does recognise such talent. Team of Choice victory amid adversity MANY critics wrote off the Team of Choice long before the first whistle was blown. As an ardent supporter of the team, I travelled by bus to Potchefstroom together with 700 die-hard supporters to watch our team in the dying minutes make a comeback to demolish Jomo Cosmos and retain the right to remain in the premier league.

ROMANIUS Zulu, in his letter published in Echo 2 June writes that the DA “…has annoyed many people for always going to the courts to complain about the government. They view the DA’s actions as attempts to rule this country through unfair means.” The DA only goes to court when the majority in government has taken a decision that the DA thinks is contrary to the laws of the land. The fact that the DA usually wins its cases is proof that the DA is correct in its thinking. What is amazing is that, despite the fact that the ANC has played a major role in establishing the laws of the land since 1994, it is the ANC, which is now flouting those laws at every opportunity in order to satisfy its stance that the ANC comes first and the country and its citizens take second or even third place. Music lovers treated to the best DJs, hiphop artists NJABULO CELE >>news@myecho.co.za

N Saturday Pietermaritzburg residents came out in numbers for an event with DJ Bongz, DJ Fresh, Bhar and underground hip-hop artists C-man, hosted by Musa Khathi. Emcees were Natasha Richards and Siyanda Maphumulo. “I’m nervous, but happy at the same time,” said Richards. Shooting the breeze A FEW years ago when I was still based in Johannesburg and working for a Sunday national publication, there was a joke about players from Zim-babwe. The majority of soccer followers around the country, especially Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and other teams used to say “players from President Robert Mugabe’s country were cheap when buying them”. In South African soccer circles used to claim that Kaizer Chiefs

Jerry Barnes

football manager Bobby Motaung only buys players from Zimbabwe because if you purchase one, you get one free. I hated that and thought our brothers from Mzansi were looking down on our neighbours and sounded like apartheid in reverse and xenophobia against our brothers from outside our borders. I salute and respect players from Zimbabwe. Most of them are of a high quality, are professional, committed, hard working and stars. So far about 90% of players who were recruited from Zimbabwe by our South African teams are marvellous to watch, are always

outstanding and have a natural winning mentality. Many years ago Chiefs had a player named Sugar Muguyo, who used to score goals like crazy. The old Mthatha Bush Bucks had the Mugeyi twins - Wilfred and Alfred - those guys were just on another level. A few seasons ago, Amakhosi had Knowledge Musona who was also pure class. Currently in the PSL, we have players from Zimbabwe such as Onismor Bhasera, Khama Billiat, Tendai Ndoro, Willard Katsande, Kudakwashe Mahachi and Cuthbert Malajila - all quality players. More players from Zimbabwe are

expected to join PSL teams in the new season so let’s welcome them because they bring quality and competition to South African soccer. Don’t be surprised if SA’s talent scouts or coaches such as Motaung (Kaizer Chiefs), Trott Moloto (Mamelodi Sundowns), Stanley Tshabalala (Orlando Pirates), Stuart Baxter (Supersport United) and Gavin Hunt (Bidvest Wits), go back to Zimbabwe to buy more players.

MQEQESHI weMamelodi Sundowns uPitso Mosimane uthi umoya wokuzwana, nokusebenza kweqembu ngokubambisana ikona okwenza iqembu liphumelele. UMosimane ebuzwa ngemfihlo yokuphumelela kweqembu le-Sundowns uthe, “Okubaluleke kakhulu bekuwukusebenza njengomndeni.” “Ukuzwana eqenjini kuhamba indawo ende futhi kuletha imiphumela emihle.” Lomqeqeshi uthi uKhama Billiat ozalwa eZimbabwe wafika ePitoli ezejoyina ezakhe AmaBrazilians ngesikhathi evela kwi Ajax Cape Town enokusaba kancane ngoba phela ithimu inkulu. UMosimane uthi nokuza eGauteng ebe kade ejwayele iKapa kwakumuxaka kancane lomdlali. “Into engayenza noma esayenza njengomndeni weMamelodi Sundowns ukuhlala phansi no-

Billiat simtshele ukuthi sizomxhasa futhi kufanele azi ukuthi uwumdlali webhola oseqopheleni eliphezulu yingakho simlande kwiAjax Cape Town. Lokho nje kukodwa kwamenza wakhululeka futhi wazibona amamukela ngezandla ezifudumele. Njengomqeqeshi wakhe ngabuya ngasondelana naye ukuze ngisebenze ekucubunguleni indima yakhe esiyifuna adlale ngayo, nokuthi angenza kanjani ukuze abe umdlali ongcono. Ngamtshela futhi ukuthi angashaya amagoli amaningi noma angakha amathuba amaningi, asize ozakwabo ukuthi nabo bashaye amagoli. Kanti-ke uma ubheka amagoli ashaywe yiSundowns kulesizini, uBilliate usize kakhulu noma naye uqobo uzishayele ngokwakhe,”kusho uMosimane. UMosimane uthi yena akazange amangale uma lomdlali eseqoqa kwasani ngesikhathi kunomncimbi wemiklomelo yePSL. “Ngingathi nje mina njengomqeqeshi wakhe kanye nozakwabo eqenjini lilonke nje, asimangalanga noma asithukanga. THABO DLADLA TALKING FOOTBALL IT is clear that the Spanish football has found the right formula for their game. They will be collecting gold medals in the two major European continental competitions. It is also interesting to note that the Uefa Champions League final is being contested by two teams from the same country and city. This will be the second time that two Spanish teams from the same city fight for this trophy. It becomes clear therefore that South Africa has a lot of work to do considering the eliminations of our teams in continental competitions. It does not help to have a rich league if trophies that matter most cannot be won. Focus needs to move back to the work done within the four white lines. Spain and Germany are two football nations that have worked very hard to transform their football. Countries that take the education of their children seriously tend to be more successful. Generally, we have become a nation that expect things to happen without putting in any effort. The education of South African football coaches need to change. It is not possible for players to progress when levels of coaching are low. It is critical that not only the content changes and improves, but also the professionalism of our coaches. The work ethic of South African coaches is not different from professionals in

kulesizini futhi ubelekelela wonke umuntu eqenjini. Ubewumdlali othandwa yiwo wonke umuntu futhi ehlale ekulindele ukusiza ekwakheni amagoli nokusiza abadlali abalahlekelwe ifomu noma abasasaba ukudlala kwi Sundowns,”kusho uMosimane. Abathandi bebhola eMzansi bazokhumbula ukuthi lomdlali waseZimbabwe udle umhlanganiso ngokuqoqa imiklomelo emithathu emcimbini wokuphela kwesizini yePSL. Ube umdlali ovelele wonyaka, waba ngumdlali okhethwe ngabanye abadlali nabaqeqeshi obachazile kulesizini, wagcina ngokuba umdlali wasesiswini obashaye bonke emakhanda. Kanti nomqeqeshi weqembu lamaBrazilians (Mamelodi Sundwons), uMosimane ubuye wadla umhlanganiso ngokuba umqeqeshi ovelele kulesizini. Mhlawumbe ekubongeni ukuvundulula amakhono noma ukuletha abadlali abaseqophelweni eliphezulu kwiSundowns asithulele isigqoko owayengumqeqeshi weBafana Bafana nowadlala kakhulu kwiMoroka Swallows nakumaBrazilians, uTrott Moloto.

other fields. I know that people have choices, however, football is a fitness industry. It is important that those that are leaders in the field project a positive image. We cannot preach health and fitness to the youth while our bodies are out of shape. We need to lead by example. It is disappointing that black football coaches in particular, are out of shape. We lack discipline. How many football coaches continually invest in their development? This is a sickness that affects South African professionals from other fields. We spend more time on things other than our own work. It was interesting to watch some the action in a match between Chiefs and Chippa. The second goal of Chippa FC was a replica of what happens in the streets across South Africa. This is a strength of South African football. The challenge lies in developing it into winning football. This requires people that are willing to pull up their sleeves and sweat blood. Currently, we find it more convenient to cut and paste and claim other people’s work as our own. Money is not a solution to every problem. The truth is that money cannot do the work. Countries like China would be football world champions if money could buy success. South Africans need to invest time in trying to find out who they are. The Spanish, and Barcelona in particular, revolutionised football when they unleashed the short guys - Messi, Iniesta, etc., into international football. They proved that if you play to your strength success is guaranteed. Prior to this the English had sold us an idea that you needed to be a mountain to play football. What are the strengths of South African footballers? I doubt if those leading our game has a clue on this particular topic. Lastly, the season is over and clubs will be taking a well- deserved break. It is important to acknowledge the role played by football fans. We wish them a good break and hope they come back from the off-season well rested. It is important for club supporters to stick to their roles. You are not coaches, managers or players, you are supporters. Let us stick to supporting teams and allowing those given other roles to do their work without interference. Unzima lomthwalo.

Umpire state of mind >> Alex High netball coach is gunning for an A grade in umpiring BRAD MORGAN

A

LEXANDRA High School teacher Thembi Mlotshwa has helped lift the school to the top of the netball pile in Pietermaritzburg. On a personal level, she has attained even greater success and recently managed the South African U18 team on their tour of New Zealand. It has been anything but an overnight success for Mlotshwa. “It started at a very young age, when I was in primary school,” she said. “I played in high school and at tertiary level I played for KZN, but that was as far as I could go. After that, I started teaching and coaching.” In those early days, Mlotshwa identified Sonny Boy Ndlovu as an important mentor in her growth within the sport. “I learnt a lot from him,” she said. While she has made her mark coaching Alex, it’s Mlotshwa’s umpiring that has been taking her places. “Especially now, at national level, my focus has totally shifted from coaching. It’s just about umpiring the whole time. I am also grading umpires at national level. “My coaching is at school level, but otherwise it’s just umpiring and umpiring. Sonny Boy had a lot of influence on me, because he was a top umpire.”

When she began teaching, Mlotshwa was “umpiring at low levels”, but people began to encourage her to take it more seriously, because they saw she had potential to go places with it. “I did umpiring for fun, then it became something that I wanted to be good at and improve myself.” Since she put her mind to it, she has continued to rise through the various ranks and today, Mlotshwa is a highly ranked and highly regarded umpire. But she wants to take it even higher. “I’m sitting on a B-plus grading at national level. I want to get my A this year. I’m going for my A grade. There is no doubt in my mind. That’s my main focus this year. “It will mean I am the top umpire in KZN at schools’ level. I am the top umpire at the moment at B-Plus.” An A grade will mean Mlotshwa will be able it umpire at any level. And while her skills in that department take her places, she continues to learn more about the game, which she then passes on to the girls at Alex. The results have been incontrovertibly outstanding.
