Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. Imbali child rapist sentenced to life SABELO NSELE

N Imbali man, who raped a six-year-old boy in 2015, will spend the rest of his life behind bars thanks to the dedicated work of a Pietermaritzburg detective, Warrant Officer Solomon Mthembu. The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court recently imposed a life sentence on Sibisi for raping the then six-yearold victim.

Mthembu, of the Plessislaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS), recently closed the docket of convicted rapist Simo Sibisi. He had been investigating Sibisi since March 2015 after he was suspected to have lured a child, who was walking home from school, into his house where he raped him. “It was his grandmother who suspected that the boy had been raped

after she noticed how the boy was walking and that he was behaving strangely. “The boy eventually told her the whole story after she started asking questions,” said Mthembu. He said he found it difficult to get the boy to talk to him. “He is a minor and also a boy. It was difficult to get him to talk. Ntombela attributes the reduction in crime to the strategies that were implemented.

More members were also added to the crime prevention units which operate 24 hours a day. Ntombela said sector policing was also implemented and played a great role in the reduction of crime.

HEN Bongimusa Buthelezi (28), from Imbali Unit 18, who holds an undergraduate BCom Accounting degree from the University of Zululand graduated, he didn’t imagine selling fruit on the side of the road. Buthelezi, who graduated in 2013, has resorted to working at a container tuck shop outside Edendale Hospital to get an income after failing to secure employment. “It’s very difficult getting a job, especially if you do not have the required experience. I thought that receiving my qualification would open doors and that I would be employed by now, but here I am three years later without a job and still struggling to make ends meet. It pains me that I rely on my aunts for provisions, yet I have a BCom degree.” Buthelezi, the first to graduate in his family, said life became tougher after the death of his grandmother in November last year. “I did part-time work to be able to pay off my tuition so I could get my qualification, and when I finished paying I thought things will finally look up, but I’ve been unlucky. I have sent countless job applications in, but never get call backs.” Beauty Sekete, the owner of the Sekete tuck shop where Buthelezi works, said they met last year and she was struck by his enthusiasm. “Last June one of the street vendor here asked me to give him a job because he had been sitting at home for three years, unemployed. I gave him the job so he could get work experience and a point of reference when he applied for a job in his field of study.” Sekete described Buthelezi as a very humble employee. “He agreed to come and work as a street vendor, and that should say something to his future employer. He shows great initiative at work and is a humble young man, who needs a chance to prove himself. He is a golden boy, I could keep him, but he needs broader experience in his field of study so he can better himself.” Buthelezi said he decided to take the job as a street vendor to avoid getting involved in “sinister activities”. “I didn’t want to wallow in self-pity and end up depressed at home. I wanted to keep myself occupied and be around people, who can assist

PMB doctor killed in fiery accident CHELSEA PIETERSE A PIETERMARITZBURG doctor was killed last week when the car her policeman husband was driving veered off the road and caught alight. Dr Maureen Mkhize (37) was allegedly in the passenger seat while her husband drove along the R603, near Umbumbulu in the early hours of Thursday morning. A source, who could not be named, said it was believed that an animal in the road was the cause of the crash in which the car left the road and plunged down an embankment. The car is believed to have burst into flames. The husband, allegedly in the police VIP Protection Unit, escaped with minor injuries. Mkhize is believed to have had a practice in Pietermaritzburg in the CBD, but had recently closed the practice and was in the process of relocating.

Artistically wired >> Former addict makes the most of the community’s support and now teaches pupils about his talent

TALENTED young man, Prince Ajidah Mlumbo, who overcame extreme poverty and drug abuse, is now an artist who has the support of businesses and patrons in Pietermaritzburg. “I was born in Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, I had to leave the country due to political issues and poverty. One of my friends, Wanda Mutzengerere, had taught me to make artefacts using wire, and that was all I knew how to do. “I came to South Africa in an attempt to alleviate poverty. When I got here I used to assist artists with making and selling their artefacts. At the time I had a drug problem so that’s where most of my money went. “After a while I felt I needed to change my life and poverty was my greatest teacher. “I had learnt a lot about art so I decided to start making my own artefacts using wire, and sometimes beads. “I believe I can make anything. If I see it I can make it. “Di Erskine from The Midlands Amble saw some of my work and offered to help me promote it. They gave me an information board and I advertised some of my work in a magazine. “The Amble also got me a stand at The Witness Garden Show. This was beneficial as it gave me a chance to get new customers that I was unable to reach on normal days. “Ryan Zammit from Food Pak gave me a place to store my work. This is helpful because now I don’t have to worry about packing up and taking everything home every day. “It also allows me to place more of my art on display.

PIETERMARITZBURG woman has been arrested after allegedly opening a false case, claiming she had been robbed of money meant for the poor. The 43-year-old Pinky Nxumalo was arrested with her 89-year-old husband, Zonduyise Nxumalo and a

relative, 43-year-old Siyabonga Ngwane. They made a brief appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court last Friday. The three were all remanded in custody until 20 January. Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said the suspect, with three other members of Inhluthela Community Project, had

withdrawn R230 000 from the Department of Social Development. “One member was instructed to go to Edendale Hospital and the other was instructed to go to the Game store. The two remaining members then went to Capital Centre. “The member, who was keeping the money, then pretended to be having menstrual pain.

Social Development spokesperson Vukani Mbhele said the department trains organisations how to manage funds before giving out any money. “This is concerning. At the end of the financial year, they will have to account on how they used the funds. If we pick up something amiss, we will take appropriate action,” he said.

Joyce Mzolo (18) was born with brittle bones disease and was not supposed to live longer than 10 days. “I was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as brittle bones disease, which means my bones can break really easily. “It can be hard to get around and I’ve had to endure a lot of pain. As a result I had to stop going to school in 2007. In 2011 I went back to say goodbye to all my friends who were graduating to high school.” The spirited Mzolo says she would never have survived without the support of her foster family, headed by Pam and Collin Boakes. “I’m motivated just by seeing my siblings. Despite the academic calendar beginning yesterday with most children starting the new school year across the province, this is not the case for some, who are yet

to be placed and there are various reasons why this has happened. DoE spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said one of the main concerns for the placement delays are matters relating to parents relocating. “Even though I do not have the exact number at this stage, I do know that towards the end of 2016, district directors and district chairpersons of admission commit-

tees reported that they were dealing with a few cases of pupils who needed to be admitted,” Mlotshwa said. However, Mlotshwa said the education department will be able to give a full report in terms of placement and other related issues next week. “Members of the legislature have been deployed across the province starting from today to

evaluate, among other issues, admission. “Usually we are able to identify issues during the first three days,’’ he said. We discourage parents coming at the 11th hour seeking admission for their children. “But in some cases it’s beyond their control, so we urge parents who might be struggling with placement to visit their district offices,” he said.

If there was a snake anywhere I would still be okay, but if there was a frog in the room, that would be the end of me. “So my biggest fear is frogs. That and people sitting on my pillow, I just can’t handle that.”

Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Chairman: ‘This year as the Tourism Association we are working towards embracing technology to pursue visitors in the city. We want to forge ahead to ensure the development of all our tourism products, however information on how this will be imple mented will be made available when everything has been officiated. On a personal level, this year I want to do away with habits that hinder my development and adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising and staying fit. I also want to be involved in projects that will develop the community of Pietermaritzburg at large.’

Reflections on role of extended families SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

HAVE great respect for the extended family institution, even though I may not be in a position to uphold it in my personal context or family. I remain a helpless member of the industrialised societies of the world who are dependent on the cash economy, which encourages selfishness due to limited resources. What is the extended family? It is a family unit comprising grandmother and grandfather, father and mother, aunt, uncle, cousins, nephews and nieces, who may or not live together in one home or compound. I have great respect for the extended family institution. It is even more important nowadays with the rise in the death and divorce rate. As we die as a result of so many illnesses and catastrophes that have engulfed the world, we could do with the revival of the extended family institution. Nowadays we die as a result of HIV and Aids-related illnesses, cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, road accidents, crime, politics, the list of the causes of deaths is quite long. It is touching to hear stories of fami-

lies where grandmothers survive and take care of children after the parents of their grandchildren have been mowed down by Aids-related diseases and illnesses as well as road accidents, for instance. Hence, I believe that if there is a government social grant that deserves to be increased substantially each year, it is the old-age pension grant. There is ample evidence to suggest that the role of grandparents, especially grandmothers, who happen to be in the majority and blessed with longevity, is crucial to desperate or vulnerable members of society, especially children. Therefore capacitating old people to play this noble role of taking care of orphans and abandoned children is a direct contribution to the development of society. Alas, the extended family is fast becoming like an endangered species. And what do we have today as a dominant form of family institution? It is the core family or what sociologists refer to as the nucleus family i.e. a family where there is only mother, father and their children. Thanks to industrialisation and the cash economy, the core family is help-

ing to produce so-called children who live in the street on account of poverty, retrenchments, poor parenting skills and failure to manage young delinquents. Children are left vulnerable in the hands of relatives and community members, who neglect them or leave them to fend for themselves and this has a direct bearing on the increasing rate of criminality. The core family is fast succumbing to enormous pressure due to limited resources. Taking care of orphans is not as easy as we would like it to be since the cost of living is too high and what parents earn may not even be enough to take care of their own children. Single parent households are on the rise due to the increasing rate of divorces, separations and deaths. The

community, who collude to defraud the state and create ghost beneficiaries or simply using children who have productive parents that are still alive to get these government benefits through foul means. In other words, we are stealing government money that is meant for the starving. I think the state can use incentives to preserve the extended family institution, for example, by considering giving special privileges to members of the extended family who provide proof that they are taking care of vulnerable children i.e. children whose parents have died or are unemployed. Government-subsidised coupons for extended families to buy food from shops would be one form of meaningful incentive to keep the extended family intact. Matriculant Ayanda Sithole (18) of Siqongweni Secondary School achieved distinctions in all his seven subjects.

ESPITE having a very difficult childhood, losing his mother, an absent father, losing a home and living in a mud house, Ayanda Sithole (18) fought against all odds and achieved distinctions for all his matric subjects. Ayanda, a pupil at Siqongweni Secondary School in Imbali, achieved seven distinctions despite all the turmoil in his life. He attributed his performance to his uncle who took him in when he had lost all hope. Ayanda used to live in Hammarsdale with his mother and grandmother. “We did not have much, but I was happy even though my father was never in the picture.”

He said when he was in Grade 4 his mother died and his grandmother became gravely ill and lost her job and their home. “My mother was everything. I was devastated by her death. On top of that we lost our home. Although I did not fully understand what was happening, I could tell that we were in trouble,” said Ayanda. He said he and his grandmother moved to Imbali where they stayed in a mud house. “Life went on but it was never the same; we were struggling. I remember the only meals I would eat were porridge in the morning and supper at night. I never had lunch, even at school.” He said his uncle eventually took him in and encouraged him to focus on

his education in order for him to escape poverty. “My uncle saved me. He instilled a passion in me to dream. He provided my essential needs and pushed me to do my best.” Ayanda said his uncle signed him up at an extra learning programme called ProTech where they helped him master maths and physics. “I did not attend the fanciest of schools, but I managed to do very well. I am grateful to my school teachers, ProTech, my family and for the prayers from my church,” he said. Ayanda was awarded a scholarship last year by the China Campus Network to pursue his dream career of studying electrical engineering in China. “I am still a little sceptical because it is scary having to leave everything you know and the people you love to go to a foreign country. I am considering it though because Chinese engineering comes highly recommended,” said Sithole. He added that he wished his mother was still alive to see him succeed. “She would be so proud of me. I am sure she would be jumping and crying with excitement. I miss her every day of my life.” Ayanda’s uncle, Sabelo Zondi, said he was extremely happy about Ayanda’s results and so proud of his nephew. “He showed me that he is determined and has also been very respectful and obedient under my guidance. I wish him well for his future,” said Zondi. Ayanda said in the future he wishes to build a home for his grandmother and help his siblings before owning his dream car and home. He also encouraged pupils to work and dream hard despite their challenges. “The poorest man is not the one with no money, but the one with no dream,” he said.

Kwamcane pupil earns six distinctions BAZI DLADLA A KWAMCANE High pupil has risen above numerous challenges and done extremely well in her examinations. Precious Mncwabe matriculated from Kwamcane High in Elandskop with six distinctions from seven subjects. Precious lives in the Elandskop area and comes from a disadvantaged family of a single mother and eight siblings. Precious said her family relies on government grants to get by. This is

what motivated her to do so well in matric. One day she wishes to help her mother to support the family. Precious wants to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in accounting as she has always had a liking for numbers. “I want to be an accountant so I can help people manage their money,” she said. Precious’s former teacher, Busi Mncwabe, said she is very proud of her pupil. Precious’s advice to the matric Class of 2017 is that they should work hard and always do their best. “Education is very important as it opens a lot of doors. Pupils must be grateful for having the opportunity of getting an education,” she said.
