A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make Sizes: great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. XS-XL The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.
Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). >> Anger over current ANC councillor boils over prioritising services to Imbali Unit 14, where she is from. The protesters alleged that since Gwala came to power, she had not been to France once, adding that she had snubbed a number of meetings they had invited her to. “She is unapproachable,” said a protester who did not want to be named, adding that the ANC region had colluded with Gwala to get her name on the list. “We had made it clear that we do not want her and her name was not on the list that was submitted to the region, which had only two names,” said the protester. Regional secretary Mzi Zuma dismissed the allegations, describing them as far-fetched. He said the party’s processes were still under way and the names still had to be screened by the provincial

The protesters, however, threatened to vote for “upcoming” political parties if the ANC continues to “feed” them Gwala. “We know the ANC as the people’s organisation. If it is still the people’s organisation, they will humble themselves and come back to the community. If they have turned the organisation to some kangaroo [court], well, they will not come back to the people,” said one of the protesters. Protesters believed that Mayor Chris Ndlela was to visit them there, however, at the time of going to press,
he had not yet arrived. Police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said police had arrested one protester for public violence. “At the moment the situation is calm. Police will continue to monitor the situation,” he said. The protesters also complained about not having water for weeks. Msunduzi Municipality spokes- person Nqobile Madonda said the reservoir supplying the area had run dry. “We have acquired five more water tankers to beef up supplies to Imbali and Edendale,” she said.

RANCE settlement erupted in chaos in the early hours of Tuesday when ANC members, outraged by the nomination of the party’s candidate in Ward 18, blocked the R56 (Richmond road). Other roads inside the settlement were also blocked with rocks, burning tyres, poles and wood, making it difficult for motorists to enter or exit the settlement. The protest is expected to continue today since Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela did not arrive to address the protesters, as they had hoped. “The strike will continue and the R56 will be closed. No one will be able to commute until we are heard,” one protester said last night. Pupils, who had managed to sneak into school, were sent home later amid
a false alarm that the protesters were going to burn down the schools. More than once, police had to use rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the angry crowd. While police were chasing the protesters down paths and through bush in the settlement, motorists had to clear the road themselves to escape from the stalemate, which had lasted for at least three hours. The protesters demanded that the current councillor, Sindisiwe Gwala, be removed from the party’s list of candidates for the 2016 local government elections. Gwala is standing for a second term, but protesters said in her first term there had been no service delivery and accused her of neglecting France. Gwala, who declined to comment on the matter, was accused of only

Top job for seasoned crimefighter >> New station commander is known as ‘Boxer’ AMIL UMRAW
A
N emotional inauguration was held for seasoned crime-fighter Pregasen “Boxer” Pillay at a ceremony celebrating his new role as Mountain Rise police’s station commander. Pillay, who was also promoted from colonel to brigadier, was shortlisted for the station commander position at Point police station in Durban as well as Mountain Rise, but on Tuesday it was announced he will take over the reins at uMgungundlovu District’s largest station. Trying to hold back his emotions at the ceremony, Pillay - known affectionately as “Boxer” for his skills as an amateur boxer before he joined the police - began his speech by asking to be pinched because the promotion felt like a dream. After a 35-year tenure in the force, of which 20 were spent as a colonel, Pillay said his promotion should stand as motivation for other seasoned
officers not to give up. “Never throw in the towel until the end,” Pillay advised. With this week marking the 35th year of him joining the force, Pillay described the journey as “challenging”. “I am still grappling with the feelings and coming to terms with this appointment. I know it comes with more accountability and responsibilities, which I fully embrace.” Pillay joined the police in 1981 at Mountain Rise before being transferred to the Prestbury police station between 1982 and 1988. After getting his diploma in policing, he was transferred back to Mountain Rise where he climbed the ranks to his current position. He served as the station’s commander between 1996 and 2007 before being demoted to head the visible policing unit. However, he has since accumulated more than two years’ service in an acting capacity as station commander. “I joined the police because I have

always had the instinct to serve the community. You could call it a passion.” Discussing his plans for the station, Pillay said he will focus on building stronger relationships between the
police and the community as there is currently a challenge with meeting the community’s expectations. He said he will also strive to enhance the principles of sector policing by, for example, initiating effective
neighbourhood and community watch groups. “We want the community to feel safe in their homes and in their areas. “I also encourage my officers to always treat the community fairly and with dignity. “I also hope to increase the response times from our station.” Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, uMgungundlovu North cluster commander Brigadier Francis Bantham said Pillay has seen station commanders at Mountain Rise come and go, but “it is his time now”. Confident in his capability, Bantham said Pillay commands the loyalty of his station’s officers and she believes he will make a huge difference in the station’s policing area. Messages of well wishes poured in for Pillay yesterday. Local African National Congress PR councillor Rachel Soobiah said Pillay has been an “integral part of policing”. “He [Pillay] ushers in positive change and represents the ethos of integrity, professionalism and a desire to serve the community.”

HE Msunduzi Innovation Development Institute (Midi), and nine exhibitors, conducted demonstrations on how to use recyclable materials to start their own gardens without buying seeds and gardening tools at a food security expo at the Edendale Lay Ecumenical Centre recently. “This programme will help all, especially poor people, to buy the resources needed for gardening,” said Midi research co-ordinator Sam Govender. He said that this programme will also teach people how to clean with dirty water using charcoal. Govender said the next time they host the expo they would like more support from the community, as well as community leaders. Leopold Chikwadze demonstrated how to plant potatoes using recycled plastic and metallic buckets, soil and rotten potatoes. The next food security permaculture expo will be in June. Imbali residents go days without water KAILENE PILLAY RESIDENTS of Imbali, specifically those living in Unit BB, Dambuza and Sinathing, have gone three to four days at a time without water and are forced to go to other areas to fetch water. “I am disgusted about the situation as I have not seen a single water tanker in the area. “The people of Unit BB are rate-paying citizens and do not deserve to be subjected to this kind of treatment,” said Sibanisethu Hadebe of Unit BB. Hadebe said residents last had water flowing through their taps last Friday. “But when the water does finally come through, the pressure is so low that we still cannot use it,” he said. Hadebe said he and his family had been travelling to relatives in Bisley to get water. Residents have lashed out at city management and government over the situation, saying they would boycott the upcoming local elections. “What angers us the most is the near proximity of local elections, which are characteristically filled with empty promises of change and reform,” Hadebe said. Dambuza resident Eric Madlanga said they were now in their second week without water. However, their area was being serviced by water tankers from the municipality. “We are only receiving water from the water tankers, but the driver is not patient with us. We have to keep on running behind him,” he said. Msunduzi Municipal spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the water pressure had been reduced in all areas as a means to conserve water. “Unfortunately, areas in higher placed areas will be affected the most by the reduced pressure. Additional water tankers have been obtained to assist with the high-lying areas, but
they cannot be at all places at the same time. “However, the water section tries to balance distribution between the affected areas,” she said.
Madonda appealed to residents to use water wisely as it had been seen that in other areas “residents still continue using water, unabated, yet the drought persists”.

20-YEAR-OLD woman sat unmoving, a headscarf concealing her face, as she was sentenced to three years of correctional supervision plus a five-year suspended sentence for selling her baby in a police trap last year. The woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her child’s identity, advertised her 19month-old son for sale on Gumtree on the internet. After being tipped off about the advertisement, police set up a sting operation which resulted in the woman selling the toddler to an undercover police agent for R5 000. The “deal” was concluded in the city on October 15, and the policewoman walked away with the child after handing over the money. Sentencing took place in front of the glare of a television camera after the crew obtained permission from regional magistrate Rose Mogwera to film the proceedings. Mogwera emphasised that while there was no excuse for the mother’s actions and the baby was exposed to “all the risks” associated with human trafficking, she was “not a typical” human

Mogwera said each case has to be evaluated on individual facts. She had carefully considered pre-sentencing reports by a probation officer, correctional officer and a psychologist. her conduct but it indicates the type of person we are dealing with,” said Mogwera. It was aggravating that the victim was a “small and innocent child”. “It is expected that the mother would be the one who nurtures and protects her child. A mother is the embodiment of love in its purest form … a mother would feel compelled to give up her own life to protect her child. Therefore this conduct has the effect of sending shock waves and attracting condemnation from society,” she said. Mogwera found the woman was less culpable due to her low intellectual capacity. She also appeared to be remorseful, was unlikely to reoffend and came from an extremely poor socioeconomic background. Mogwera said poverty is “no licence to commit crime”, but the woman’s economic background could not be ignored. This was not a typical case where a child was knowingly sold to a trafficking syndicate or gang for profit. It was fortunate that no physical harm had befallen the baby, she added. Mogwera warned the woman that if she fails to comply with the conditions of her correctional supervision sentence - including house arrest and attending various programmes - she can be arrested and brought back before court. After the case the woman told reporters she was “happy” she was not going to jail. Family members who were with her declined to comment.
Parties warned on illegally erected election posters STEPHANIE SAVILLE THE Msunduzi Municipality says it has warned political parties that have illegally erected election posters to remove them or face prosecution. As political parties try to drum up support ahead of the 2016 local government elections, many residents are becoming increasingly irritated as some political parties have pasted their posters on bridges and walls and any surface they can find. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said on Friday that those political parties that have glued their posters illegally have been instructed to remove them immediately or face prosecution. She said the Signage business unit attends meetings of the party liaison committee, chaired by the municipal electoral officer of the IEC, which includes representatives from all political parties. “The committee has been updated on all bylaws pertaining to political advertising leading up to the election,” said Madonda. She added that parties have been briefed on the dos and don’ts governing the erection of political advertising in terms of the bylaws. She said offending parties have been contacted and the matter of illegally placed posters has been raised at the committee’s meetings. In terms of the advertising signage bylaws, anyone wanting to put up election posters must get the municipality’s permission. By-laws insist that posters must be “securely fixed to durable hardboard or other approved backing board”. No posters are permitted to be displayed on bridges, traffic lights, traffic signs, natural features, freeways and/or national routes. An election poster can only be displayed from the beginning of the day of declaration of an election to the end of the 14th day after the election.

Major water issues in Imbali IN the current water crisis, we expect to experience water cuts, but for the people of Imbali, particularly those in Unit BB, the situation is ridiculous. Never before have we experienced anything like this. It is appalling that we are subjected to three to four consecutive days without water. Buckets of water can only go so far, and the supply returns only for a few minutes. Ours is the only road in Unit BB that experiences such severe shortages in water supply. What angers us the most is the proximity of the local government elections, which are characteristically filled with many empty promises of change and reform. I am deeply disgusted at the situation as I have not seen a single water tanker in the area since this “water shedding” started. The people of Unit BB are ratepayers and do not deserve to be subjected to this kind of treatment. The situation has boiled over to the point where some have decided to boycott the upcoming elections. I call on the municipality to investigate this matter as one can survive without food for 40-plus days, but water, a precious resource placed on Earth for the people to consume, is something a person cannot gamble with. SHDOWN resident Thato Jonkoro is proof that living with a neurological disorder, epilepsy, is not the end of one’s dreams. Jonkoro’s passion to be part of the entertainment industry has driven him to start an entertainment company, Mochachoes. Services the company offers includes event management, planning and executing launches, celebration events, recording music, public speaking, youth leadership engagements and training master of ceremonies for events. Growing up Jonkoro struggled to walk, talk and write. “While taking epilepsy medication, I realised that studying at a special school meant I would not reach my full potential. “That motivated me to start my own entertainment company. I have younger siblings and felt I had to do something to prosper,” he said. Among the people who have supported him from the beginning is his friend Zipho Makhoba and his parents. “The first event I organised was for Mandela Day last year. The second event was in December during the school holidays that was sponsored by Coca-Cola. At the moment I am planning to host Nobuhle Modelling Disability, a beauty pageant targeted at women living with disabilities.
Man’s passion to prosper drives him >> Ashdown resident starts his own entertainment company “Entry dates for the event will be released to the public in due course. “The pageant will likely take place at the end of August. Currently I use my personal funds to organise events, but I would welcome sponsorship from businesses and individuals for my dream to come true.” Jonkoro is also an artist and is working on releasing his first afropop album. He performed at the launch of local movie, Isikhwele, at the Edendale Mall and said his music was well received. He cited Robbie Malinga and Babo as his mentors and said he would welcome an opportunity to work with them. His father, Nhlanhla, said that when Jonkoro was born doctors said he would not be able to walk and that he would have a short life span. “He cannot read or write, but is talented when he speaks. I am extremely proud of my son. He has achieved a lot.” Jonkoro can be contacted on 076 552 4057.

HE Love to Live event, with this year’s theme aimed at fighting racism, will be held at the Protea grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The theme is “Racism Must Fall. Ubuntu our Strength”. The School of Fashion director, Priscilla Bhika, said the fashion school has joined hands with Love To Live and will have a fashion show on 14 May at 3pm at the Protea grounds.
“This is a three-day event and our fashion students have designed outfits that go with the theme of the event. “We have 20 to 25 students who will showcase their garments. and there will be great prizes to be won as well. “We are motivating the youth that if they have problems, they can always talk to someone about what they are going through,” she said. Event organiser Dan Moodley said: “The start of the event was in 2000 and we were in partnership with Community Chest. It was a
small event held at the Harry Gwala Stadium. “One year later there were 15 suicides in the northern areas. “After this I thought the best way to tackle this sensitive issue was by hosting a community event. “As this year’s theme states ‘Racism Must Fall. Ubuntu our Strength’, we want to unite the people of South Africa. “The theme is influenced by all the racism that goes on in our country. “We are saying enough is enough.”

HE organizer behind Sondlovu Sphilile Tournament, David Ndlovu, has just started his own beauty pageant, Mr and Miss Ward 17, which is scheduled to take place on 18 June at Imbali Unit 13 community hall. This is Ndlovu’s first time hosting a beauty pageant. The event will start at 9am. Even though the competition focuses on ward 17, Ndlovu said that participants from all over Pietermaritzburg are welcome to take part. “It has been a long time since we have had beauty pageants in our ward. I want to bring this old tradition to the youth in my community. The competition targets males and females who are under 19-years old. The event will be held in June because we want the youth to take pride in who they are and what they do during youth month. Whatever they dream to do, they will achieve,” said Ndlovu. He said that for the finals on 18 June, they are targeting to have more than 23 males and 23 females competing . “The girl and boy that will represent the ward must be well respected and must have a passion for modeling. They should be progressive in their studies, community work or careers.” Ndlovu said that hosting the event will keep the youth busy and will keep them away from abusing drugs and alcohol over the Youth Day weekend. “If they have something to look forward to, they will behave themselves. Whoever wins will be the ambassadors for ward 17 and they will have to do duties targeted at uplifting the ward 17 community. This includes

Artist debuts at Art in the Park
12 May 2016
Mad about ‘park art’ NICOLE JOHN >>news@myecho.co.za THE 54th annual Art in the Park was a great success at its new home at the KwaZulu-Natal Botanical Gardens as visitors came out in full force to support artists. There was entertainment for the whole family including a play area for the children. Organisations also had stands to promote their work. At the event …

AKING her debut as an artist at this year’s Art in the Park is Thulile Ngcobo whose passion is painting. Ngcobo said that becoming an artist was not something she pursued, it was something she always enjoyed doing. “I didn’t choose art, it chose me. I can’t say that one day I woke up and decided I wanted to be an artist because it wasn’t like that. It’s just something that was in me.” The 27-year-old calls herself a “self-taught” artist who learnt to create pieces by experimenting, however, she never showcased her work.
108 Retief Street Pietermaritzburg 3201
“This is the first time I am showing the public my work. I have never exhibited anywhere and I thought this is the time and the perfect platform for me to do so,” said Ngcobo. She matriculated from Russell High School and took art at school. “It’s something I would love to do full time. The experience at Art in the Park has been eyeopening and I already have ideas for my next exhibition. I’m so glad that I have had this experience to grow me as an artist.” Ngcobo hopes that showcasing her art will open doors for other young, black female artists who find it hard to enter the industry. “I hope that my story and art will inspire other women to focus on what they are good at and pursue it with their heart,” she said.

Gabriel Pillay, head boy at Carter High School, was accepted on KennedyLugar Youth Exchange and Study Programme. Gabriel will leave in August to complete a 10month exchange programme in the United States through American Field Services. ‘It will be my first trav el abroad and without my family, but I don’t feel anxious about that for now. I will do my best when I am abroad as I know that my achievements will give positive international exposure to the school. I am going to America as an ambassador for South Africa and Carter High School, and I hope to do them both proud and to return a better person. My motto is make today the best day of your life, and make tomorrow better.’

Banyana needs tough friendlies ahead of Olympics
2014 Comrades ECHO 35 winner ready for 2016 race maritzburg
>> ‘So far so good and I’m ready and fit. All my preparations went well’
JERRY BARNES FORMER Banyana Banyana head coach and ex-Safa interim technical director Fran Hilton-Smith says the SA women’s senior team need to play tough friendlies in order to make them strong. Hilton-Smith this week told Echo this after Safa confirmed they are to have an international friendly against Zimbabwe. According to Safa, Africa’s two female representatives at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the SA senior women’s team, Banyana Banyana and Zimbabwe, will lock horns on Sunday at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa at 3pm. “I am impressed with the preparations and quality of friendlies arranged so far. Our neighbours, Zimbabwe, are one of Africa’s representatives in this year’s Olympics and are a quality side. It’s going to be a tough one, but we are both going to learn a lot from each other,” said Hilton-Smith. Banyana’s head coach Vera Pauw was excited about the chance of playing against SA’s neighbours. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us and Zimbabwe, Africa’s representatives in the women’s tournament at the Olympics, to showcase what we can potentially unleash at the Olympics. “The two teams will use the occasion to launch final preparations towards Rio. We are grateful to them [Zimbabwe] agreeing to come here at such a short notice. I hope fans will come in numbers to watch this encounter as this is something that might not happen often,” said Pauw. “The last time we played against Zimbabwe, it ended in a goalless draw so this will be good for our preparations. After a few weeks of not being in camp, we are happy that we can resume with our training camps. The team must be together and train together, so this match comes at a very important time, which is why we are happy. We will be able to get back into the full swing of things for the last push towards Rio.” The Rio 2016 Olympic Games run from 3 to 20 August. The South Africans are in Group E alongside Brazil, Sweden and China, while Zimbabwe is in Group F against Canada, Australia and Germany. Banyana Banyana open their account with a clash against Sweden at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, 3 August. Next on the cards for the Sasolsponsored women’s national team will be China at the same venue on Saturday, 6 August. The third and last group stages match for Banyana Banyana with the hosts on Tuesday, 9 August at the Amazon Arena in Manaus. - additional information, Safa.
Banyana Olympic Games fixtures: Wednesday 3 August Sweden vs South Africa Olympic Stadium 13h00 (18h00 SA time) Saturday, 6 August South Africa vs China Olympic Stadium 19h00 (12h00 midnight SA time) Tuesday, 9 August South Africa vs Brazil Amazonia Arena (Manaus) 21h00 (02h00 Wednesday, 10 August SA Time).

HE Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on 29 May is just around the corner and around this time the majority of athletes are tense and in their final stages of training, but Bongumusa
Mthembu says he is strong and ready for the down run. The Bulwer-born and 2014 Comrades Marathon winner says his preparations have gone well and is expecting to have a good race. “So far so good and I’m happy with everything I did to make sure
that I’m ready and fit. All my preparations went well.” Mthembu’s personal best in a standard marathon (42,2km) is 2:20:10, which he recorded it 2010 at the South African championships, and 3:15 for the ultra-marathon he clocked in 2012 at Two Oceans.
Mthembu and ultra-athletes help training camps around the Midlands and target other marathons around the country. “Our first camp was in Giant’s Castle in the Berg from January to April. “Then for the whole of May we were in Balgowan. In the camp I had my friends and club mates Thuso Mosiea, Luzuko Mdeliswa and Mandla Dumakude with. We are all good friends and hard-working athletes,” said Mthembu. The races that Mthembu and “company” have run include the PDAC (25km), Nongoma Ultra Marathon (56km), Two Oceans (56km) and the Durban Marathon (21,1km). In last year’s Comrades - the up run - Mthembu achieved 12th position. “You must realise I ran the up run after missing it for three years. “Maybe I’m not an up-run athlete.” Besides Mthembu being tipped to be the first SA athlete to cross the Comrades finish line, other names expected to do well from KZN are Mncedisi Mkhize, Themba Mthembu, Thuso Mosiea and Eric Ngubane.
Siyabonga FC thanks its players NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com SIYABONGA Football Club in KwaNxamalala, recently held its end-of-season award ceremony by awarding its players, who put the football team’s name at the top of the log during the season. Club coach Michael Mngadi said that the team worked very hard to reach their current status. He said that every year they hold a ceremony to thank everyone for their hard work. “This was our token of appreciation. The prizes were sponsored by Terry Peate Racing. Siyabonga has 19 players and two management members - a football manager and a general manager,” she said. Mngadi said that the Siyabonga Football Tournament was established on 17 March, 2002. “We wanted to help the youth in rural areas. They have no form of entertainment and by starting the football club, we wanted to keep them busy and to promote healthy lifestyles,” said Mngadi. The club started in 2002 with players in the U12 team. “In 2004 we formed U15 and that was when we joined (Maritzburg and District Football Association) MDSA. We played the MDSA U15 division and finished as runners up. The following year we were promoted to U17 and we won the MDSA league. In 2006 we saw that the team was ready for bigger challenges and we then upgraded to a senior team. That was when we registered under the Sweetwaters Football Association.
