This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

POSTGRADUATE student from the Durban University of Technology, Indumiso Campus, could miss an opportunity of a lifetime to attend the 2016 Golden Key International Summit in Tucson, Arizona if she does not get sponsorship. Monde Xakaza (31), from Imbali Unit 3, doing her fourth year Bachelor of Education, is one of two students from her university to get an invitation to attend the summit from 28 to 31

July. She was selected based on her academic achievements and is making a desperate plea to Good Samaritans to help her realise her dream of attending the summit. Xakaza said DUT has offered to pay for her flight, but she needs an additional R20 000 to cover other travelling costs, including accommodation and food. The Golden Key is an honour society for top-performing graduates in all fields of study from across the globe, who meet once a year at the summit to share ideas and unlock excellence.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

According to the Golden Key website, it has more than two million members, including honoraries Desmond Tutu and Bill Clinton. Xakaza said attending a summit of this magnitude is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “To be part of this society is an achievement for any academic. Attending the summit will have a lasting impact on my future and the future of my peers at the university as well as my future colleagues within the teaching field. “The summit is submerged into a

culture of academic excellence where like-minded scholars gather on an international scale to discuss a spectrum of subjects and cultivate leadership development skills.” Passionate about education, Xakaza, who recently completed her sixmonth working experience at Zibukezulu High, said the summit will afford her a chance to interact with teachers from countries like Australia. “Australia has one of the best education systems in the world. It would be beneficial to network with teachers from there to find out what their curriculum entails and how South Africa can incorporate into our education system to improve it,” she said. She said as a member of Golden Key International Honour Society she is part of a community outreach programme aimed at sparking change through education. “I’ve taken a good look at my community and realise that change can be brought about through education. If you are a good teacher you are bound to inspire change and help the youth face obstacles they have in society.” Xakaza’s husband Smangaliso said he is doing everything in his power to make sure his wife attends the summit. “If I was employed I would fund her entire trip, but I’m also a student and we are cash-strapped and appeal to anyone who can lend a helping hand to assist my wife go to the summit. “It may seem unattainable and impossible right now, but we know it is doable. She has worked so hard throughout her academic career and attending this summit will be the culmination of all her hard work.” Anyone interested in assisting her can contact her on 063 634 1994.

Murder and hijacking suspects in court NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com THREE suspects appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court last Friday on charges of murder, hijacking and kidnapping. The accused, Thobani Madondo (27), Nsizwazonke Mncube (31) and Philani Malinga (21), appeared before Magistrate M. Boikhutso following their arrest after the murder of Muziwamadoda Nkandi (69), from Sweetwaters and the kidnapping and hijacking of Njabulo Ndlovu. Nkandi was shot and killed in front of his wife on 28 June at his home where it is alleged the three men broke in and tried to steal his Nissan bakkie. According to Plessislaer police station spokesperson, Captain Musa Ntombela, the suspects planned to steal the bakkie to execute another robbery. “When they got to his residence one of the suspects (also from Sweetwaters) called out Nkandi’s name and as he came out to investigate they pointed a firearm at him and demanded he give them the keys to the bakkie.” It is further alleged Nkandi ran back into the house and one of the suspects followed him and fired shots, fatally wounding him. The suspects then used cable ties to tie up Nkandi’s wife before ransacking his house and made away with electrical appliances, the bakkie log book, and spare keys. When the bakkie stalled during their robbery, the suspects fled in a getaway car and just over six kilometres away hijacked Njabulo Ndlovu along Caluza road. “The suspects hijacked a VW Polo and put the driver in the boot of the vehicle and drove off with him. Fortunately, he followed the conversation of where the suspects were headed and used his cellphone to alert the police, who later apprehended the suspects at the Sasol garage in Archie Gumede Drive.” Ntombela said one suspect escaped and is still on the run. The case is proceeding. The suspects will appear in court again tomorrow for a formal bail application.

lidalulwe, uthe bazamile ukumakhela umxhaso ngamandla abo ngoba bebona isimo sakhe kodwa nakhona bahlangabezana nezinkinga. “Umkhulu bese simtholele indawo lapho besesimakhela khona umxhaso. Lendawo ubeyinikwe omunye ubaba wakhona endaweni kodwa sizibone sesimiswa amaphoyisa nakhona kwathiwa singabe sisaqhubeka nokwakha ngoba indawo yomunye umuntu. “Okubi ukuthi nangapha endlini yakhe yomxhaso ayikho inqubekela phambili ngoba akucaci ukuthi uyoyithola nini.” Ikhansela ku-ward 1 u-Amos Mbanjwa lithe belingakaze libikelwe ngaloludaba phambilini, “Ngingathanda ukuthi ngixhumane naye umkhulu ngibone ukuthi angasizakala kanjani ngoba uma kungukuthi inamba leyo edingekayo usayilahla singakwazi ukusebenzisa inamba yakhe kamazisi HALF PRICE HERBALS ukubheka ukuthi wayebhalise nini.” 033 811 0087

>> ‘Black entrepreneurs need to unite’ minister NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com

M

INISTER of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu said black entrepreneurs need a complete “mindset shift” if they are to be in charge of the economy. Zulu was speaking at the annual Truevine Business Conference at the Royal Showgrounds on the weekend. “If we are to be in charge of the economy, we need to think differently. Now that we’ve had 23 years of politics, let’s focus on the economics and accumulate wealth for ourselves. “It is now time to know where the country’s money is going. Prominent white entrepreneurs have built empires and go to the banks smiling every day and make sure we bicker among ourselves and focus on stories about so and so who is corrupt while they accumulate wealth. “Let’s take a closer look at where the money is going. Do you know that government spends R1 billion a day on infrastructure? Have you stopped to ask yourself where this money is going? A small fraction of blackowned businesses benefit from that, a large piece of the pie goes to whiteowned businesses that have all the required equipment and experience to secure big contracts,” said Zulu. She said black entrepreneurs needed to unite. “There is no other way we can take over the economy of the country unless we support each other, understand the

economy of the country and the systems of what support the government and private sector has.” Zulu criticised black entrepreneurs, who front for white-owned companies, to secure tenders and big contracts. “They make you front for them, give you a mickey mouse house, refrigerator and car, then every month they give you R20 000. You need to think big because they are cashing in more at the end of the month. Black businesses must not tolerate mediocrity. “What I’m afraid of is that if we do not change the way we do things, we are going to begin to be resentful and

angry. Let us spend the next 20 to 30 years taking back that economy into our hands, nobody is going to give it to us. Let us find a system and mechanism that is going to help us to do that very quickly.” Apostle Nathi Zondi said the Truevine Business network is a church-based network that was started in 2007. “The network is aimed at raising and developing strong and influential entrepreneurs. The network develops entrepreneurs who will create employment and run strong sustainable businesses on sound business and biblical values.”

Abazalwane base HUC (Holiness Union Church) city branch bahambele eSweetwaters Primary School. Labazalwane banikelele abafundi ngezicat hulo, amajezi, amahembe, amatunics kanye namasokisi. Bebehanjelwe nduna yendawo uBaba uNgcoya. Ibandla lithanda ukudlulisa ukubonga kuthishanhloko wakulesikole uMnuz SW Mbanjwa ngethuba alinikeze lona ukwenza lomsebenzi wokunikela.

rants for this award. The winner will be the restaurant that best meets these criteria. “We live in an age where it’s imperative for restaurants to be conscious of their environmental and social impact. The aim of the Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award is to inspire readers and members of the food industry to reduce their impact, to create greater awareness about responsible sourcing and eating, and to reward a restaurant that has shown true commitment in this regard,” said Justin Smith, group head of sustainability, Woolworths Holdings. To enter, restaurants must complete an entry form, which lists the criteria against which they will be judged. All criteria need to have been met for six months or longer in order for a restaurant to qualify. Interested restaurants can download the entry form here https://newmediadigital.co.za/ eatout/woolworths/sustainability-awards.pdf or contact Julie Potgieter at Julie.Potgiet er@newmediapub.co.za or 071 375 2220 to request an entry form. OUTH African restaurants are invited to enter the inaugural Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award, the winner of which will be announced at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards later this year. This new award is aimed at recognising restaurants that are implementing practices that are environmentally and socially responsible in an effort to be more sustainable as well as being cognisant of the importance of higher animal welfare. “We recognise that achieving sustainability is an ongoing process, but we want to showcase restaurants that are making great strides to promote good practices,” said Eat Out editor, Abigail Donnelly. The Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award judging panel is independent from that of the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. The panel consists of Donnelly, Pavitray (Pavs) Pillay of WWF-SASSI, Lynsay Sampson of Fairtrade South Africa, Sonia Mountford of Eategrity and Karen Welter of the Longtable Project. Eat Out has worked with these partners to develop robust criteria for evaluating restau-

Soccer children in need of basics I HAVE always realised that sport saved me from a lot of social ills, and made me a family man and a respected community member. I still believe that sport can play an important role in saving the young generation from social ills.

Sport is also a simple, cheap and powerful tool to unite communities, cultures, religions and races. I was therefore touched when I watched youngsters from around Panorama (Ward 34) training to play football without goalposts at the Panorama School grounds recently. Apparently the old goalposts rotted and fell apart. This means these youngsters are training without the basic requirements. With this in mind, I ask the good people out there to please donate a set of goalposts, soccer kit and a few balls. I can be contacted at jerryb.bar nes228@gmail.com or 083 521 9553, and at 8 Redwood Crescent, Panorama Gardens, Pietermaritzburg. JERRY BARNES Pietermaritzburg

Work together to help SA thrive P

ROPAGANDA echoes endlessly as we are about to go to the elections, a serious crime to the dignity of poor people. Political parties are squabbling with each other instead of working together to help our country thrive. Instead of seeing ourselves as South Africans, we still categorise each other as blacks and whites. Mandela said he fought against white domination and against black domination, but that vision is misplaced. Court debacles of parties perpetuate hostility and hate among

people who are brainwashed. The blame game is a hinderance to prosperity and continuity. Mandela did not point fingers at anyone after 27 years of imprisonment and with that his actions gave him a foot in the door to democracy. The powers gained after the elections should reflect “Ubuntu” to everyone. With great power comes profound responsibility that is sincere and does not flout it on agenda and service delivery. SAMUKELISO KE MTHEMBU Sobantu

U.S. mass shootings

Bayokhokhelwa mhla kubusa yiphi inkosi abomdlalo ‘Umkhonto Wabantu’

IN the wake of the terrible shooting in Orlando, a political struggle is playing out over whether to define the massacre as an anti-gay crime or an act of “Islamic” terrorism. Although it is difficult to make sense of the conflicting information coming out, the massacre cannot be condoned. Taking the reports of his exwife, family and former coworkers into account, why Omar Mateen committed the crime will likely never be known with clarity. The official story that he was “radicalised” and linked to Isis does not hold water. Beyond his 911 call moments before the rampage, there is no solid evidence linking him to Isis. Moreover, it has been reported he was a patron of Pulse nightclub and regularly visited LGBT websites. The number of mass shootings resulting in deaths is increasing in the U.S. Perhaps it is time for that government to re-examine its gun laws. Mass shootings and deaths are not unique to the U.S, however, there they are increasing, why. MOHAMED SAEED Pietermaritzburg

N excited crowd, carrying Indian flags, gathered to catch a glimpse of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday morning. Modi arrived in Pretoria last Thursday for a two-day official visit focused onto strengthening the relationship between the two countries. After meeting with President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Modi flew to KwaZuluNatal to visit Pietermaritzburg and Phoenix in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi. Modi arrived at Pentrich station in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday morning, where he travelled by train to the Pietermaritzburg station. The 15-minute trip commemorated Gandhi’s attempted journey to Pretoria where he was kicked off

Indian PM visits capital >> Twoday visit to SA focused on strengthening ties between South Africa and India the train at the Pietermaritzburg station after refusing to move from the first class carriage to the third class carriage. Modi was escorted from the train onto a red carpet where he was greeted by packs of scrambling cameramen and women. Alongside Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu, Modi laid a wreath in remembrance of Gandhi at a plaque on the platform. Modi then gave a brief speech in Hindi, mentioning Gandhi and Nelson Mandela before being led to the gates of the station doors. A large crowd gathered at the entrance of the station armed with phone cameras and Indian flags and chanting his name to welcome him. Midlands Hindu Society’s Sherry Mahabeer said Modi’s visit had

been “much anticipated” among the Indian community. “Seeing Modi cemented a sense of belonging, it was like receiving our own and being in touch with the motherland even for those who have never visited India,” she said. Mahabeer said that although Modi’s appearance was brief, catching a glimpse of the prime minister was like being linked to India. Zuma and Modi held discussions during the visit that led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of grassroots innovation in the area of science and technology. They also signed a memorandum of understanding on tourism and a programme of cultural co-operation and information, communication technology.

BHEKI MKHIZE

T

HE recent upheavals in the country, which seem to be born out of competition for positions, have prompted me to reflect on the days gone by, when young men and women had to take up roles of leadership in their communities during a time when this could mean signing their death warrant. This journey of introspection has led me to reflect on the life of the late Sifiso “Slovo” Dladla, as most comrades would have preferred to call him. It is times like these that remind us of the gallant fighters for liberations. We both grew up in Willowfountain. It must have been in 1986 when we first met. He was a young, smart dresser, intelligent and, of course, deep in the follies of youth. I would usually see him behind his wheelbarrow collecting water from the local streams and fountains. We had no water taps in those days and for a tap-water treat we had to “steal” water from Imbali Unit 18, which was not too far from our area. What was also remarkable about Comrade Sifiso was that he loved his books while some of us were full-time comrades: “Struggle first — education later”, as we used to say. It was a difficult balancing exercise to concentrate on your studies while you had “a dustbin lid and a stone in the other hand”, as Mbongeni Ngema would put it in one of his songs. On the other hand, Comrade Sifiso lived a structured life, well-organised, and I was under the impression he was from an affluent family (umtakabani). When one looks back one often wonders how his mother managed to provide for him. All I

Remembering the seeds planted by one comrade know is that he was a garden boy (um qulusi). We called ourselves abaqulusi because of the manner in which one positions oneself when working in the garden. In the mid-eighties we were not friends, we barely talked to each other. Indeed, when our friendship developed in the early nineties we never thought that it was going to stand the test of time. What is interesting is that we rarely agreed on issues. We would argue without fear of jeopardising our friendship and he developed this skill of taking on people thinking that they would keep his opinion at that level. It is

Sifiso Dladla. unfortunate that it was not the case with some of his comrades - it became personal. In 1990, we attended one of those most intimidating community meetings and he voiced his opinion on certain issues which caught the attention of some comrades - they were impressed. It was a very tense meeting because comrades had been killed and people’s lives were still at stake. I was one of the community

leaders by that time and well-informed about the intricacies of being in the United Democratic Front and leading at community level. This meeting was called to beef up our area committee after a massacre had left eight comrades dead in one day — most of them were members of our area committee. When Comrade Sifiso was appointed to be part of the area committee, he must have been 17. There was nothing unusual or strange about it because most of us joined the UDF at that age or younger. What made his appointment unpalatable was that comrades had been murdered and he was expected to fill their shoes. Some comrades tried to save his skin from the dangers of being in the committee by saying he was still young but that did not hold water because most of the comrades were young. He tried to speak or turn down the nomination but words would not come out of his mouth — he was shell-shocked. After the meeting I went home with comrades talking about him and his reaction to the appointment to the committee, and indeed, some people were of the opinion that we wanted to disturb him from his studies because we did not like progressive people in Willowfountain. Some were of the view that he was going to end up dead like most of our young leaders. It must have been three days after the area meeting when he visited my home. He came unannounced. I can’t recall what we discussed on that day or on a number of occasions we spent together thereafter. He kept me in the dark for almost 15 years about what had prompted him to befriend me. When he eventually broke his silence about the matter, he informed me that it was his father who had advised him. His father was well versed with the

struggle for liberation and he advised him to be streetwise by befriending one of the committee members in order to gain the necessary insight into the activities of the UDF area committee. His father informed him to identify one person he could trust and be with that person through thick and thin. I happened to be that person, hence his unannounced visits at my place. He gave me the necessary weapon against him because when he tried to outwit me on organisational issues, I used to tease him about how our friendship began. All those who interacted with him would confirm that he was like an encyclopaedia when it came to political issues. We began a long and arduous journey within the ANC structures in Willowfountain, at times dangerous but also exciting. With most community leaders dead or not available for some reason, we took the centre stage in providing community leadership, if one may call it that. There is one incident when we were called to deal with the com-tsot sies, i.e. criminals pretending to be comrades. These com-tsotsies were terrorising our community and, of course, were well-armed and dangerous. We had no guns in those days but it did not deter us from confronting the thugs. I must confess, if we had a choice, we would have opted otherwise. We decided to take small hammers and tuck them inside our pants under the waist belts. We confronted the com-tsotsies with ease. I shudder to think what would have happened had they decided to shoot us to increase their arsenal. Comrade Sifiso loved and lived the ANC. He was a true cadre of our times. He always believed in programmes and projects aimed at developing our communities. I cannot recall how many times he

reminded us that a branch of the ANC without a community development programme should be ashamed of itself. He presented a new community project at one of our meetings just before he fell ill. He titled this project Imbewu, meaning “the seeds”, and it was a brilliant project aimed at bringing families together. We are indebted to all the comrades who have departed, but also take pride in their contribution to the liberation struggle. It is a great sadness that most of these comrades found themselves sidelined because of their choice of leadership and their openness about it. Comrade Slovo’s legacy will not be recorded in big books but surely he influenced a number of comrades and changed people’s lives for the better. As we approach the 2016 local government elections and celebrate 22 years of democracy, most of us today would find it difficult to reflect on some of the hardships encountered by comrades like Sifiso and many others before him. It is a natural process that we must not easily embrace because it’s catastrophic at times to be in a state of oblivion. We have grown to feeling entitled to leadership positions, to opulence and extravagance, certainly disconnected from the yoke carried by our fellow liberation fighters. Let’s not allow greed, unwarranted anger and short-sightedness to destroy our hard-earned freedom. We are trying to build our country at a time when most African countries have tried to pull together but failed after independence — let us not dare fail. • Bheki Mkhize works in the Office of the Premier’s human rights directorate. ‘MARITZBURG Echo’ reporter NOKUTHULA KHANYILE asked people what they think of the new flavoured and scented Max condoms set to replace the Choice condoms that have been issued by the Department of Health.

Mxolisi Mncwabe (18), Imbali

Sbongumusa Ngidi (20), Wartburg

‘Scented or not, the whole point of condoms is to protect. Let’s give it a couple of years and see if there is an increase in teenage pregnancy after the roll out of the new condoms. I think the money spent on this project could have been used for the better ment of our people in sectors like education. Government should rather encourage young people to abstain from sex.’

‘I don’t think the scented condoms will have much of an impact. The only thing that is changing is that the new condoms come in different flavours and a different packaging. The most important thing about a condom is protection. We cannot say that now that they smell better, peo ple will start using them. Government needs to focus on sex education, teach young people the results of having unprotected sex and not encourage them to use scented condoms.’

Thobelani Ngcobo (20), Elandskop:

Kwanele Zondi (20), PeaceValley

‘My opinion is yes, condom use will probably more fashionable now. I think the problem with Choice condoms was the terrible ‘rubber’ smell and a lot of peo ple could not afford to buy good quality condoms and complained that Choice did not give them any pleasure. The new condoms will encourage people to use protection again.’

‘I think the new condoms will definitely spice things up. The choice condoms had an unpleasant latex smell. Flavoured condoms are a thing amongst young people and to get them for free will be an added bonus. I think generally using con doms should be a way of life, it is always better to be safe than sorry. I commend the government for com ing up with new ways of encourag ing people to always use protection.”

IN an effort to diversify the chartered accounting industry, the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA) recently hosted a maths camp at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for the first time. The annual Thuthuka Development Camps is a unique partnership between the Department of Basic Education and SAICA and was established in 2005 to help overcome barriers to transformation within the accountancy profession. There is currently a huge gap in the accounting profession with black and coloured groups being the minority. These groups are the focus for the Thuthuka Development Camps. The latest SAICA chartered accountants (CA) statistics are over 30 000 white, more than 4 000 Indian, over 3 000 black and over 1 000 coloured. Yuven Gounden SAICA project manager for communications, said the camp was developed to enhance and upskill pupils who are doing well in maths. “We identify pupils who are good academic candidates who are performing well in maths and who we think will benefit from having added lessons in subjects that are key for the CA profession,” he said. Thuthuka Development

f

Camps are run throughout all nine provinces and take on about 200 pupils in each camp, where they are housed in university residences and everything is provided for them to fully reap the benefits of the week-long programme. Each camp consists of a fiveto-seven-day workshop where pupils are given additional support in mathematics, communication, science, accounting, career guidance and life skills subjects. The camps are led by students who have previously been through the Thuthuka Development Camps. The week includes motivational talks by camp leaders, university representatives, institutions such as financial services boards and spokespeople from various professions. Camp pupils are also eligible for the Thuthuka Development Bursaries where SAICA provides them with tuition, residence fees, a small stipend and book allowance. After completing their CA studies, which takes seven years, students are placed in financial firms that are part of the SAICA bursary programme. “We give the trainees back to our donors, which is a good thing for their employment, but at the same time it means we are transforming the profession by injecting the necessary demographics into firms,” said Gounden.

IVE pupils from Raisethorpe Secondary School are representing South Africa in the Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp, accompanied by their drama teacher, Tarin Chetty. Tasmia Gani (16), Taryn Enoch (16), Nothile Mvelase (17) and Nikheal David (16) are in Grade 11 with Mduduzi Zwane (16) in Grade 10. This is the first overseas trip for them who were extremely excited about their

new journey. The group spoke to Maritzburg Fever before they left on Sunday, 10 July. The camp is a cultural exchange programme that gives pupils from 20 countries an opportunity to showcase their country and its heritage through dramatic arts. Raisethorpe Secondary is the only school in SA to be selected to participate. The school was selected by the Department of Education and pupils were chosen based on their merit in the subject at the school. “We are very excited to be given this

opportunity. Lots of hard work has been put into it and the group has worked constantly. They are hard workers so for me it was easy to get them ready to participate,” said Chetty. Tasmia said one of the things the group is most looking forward to is meeting new people and interacting with pupils from all over the world. “We will be exposed to other countries and have an opportunity to see how other children our age live. Our main aim is to show them that South

GLN group makes waves in Grahamstown

>> Rainbow Theatre Company, will be performing ‘My Body, My Life, My Decisions’

Mo Magic in PMB HAVING astonished, amazed and entertained a number of celebrities, personalities and the public with his weekly primetime TV show titled Magic with Mo on SABC3, South African magician Mo Magic brings his theatre show to Pietermaritzburg for four per formances as part of his national tour. A first of its kind for South Africa, the TV show gained a tremendous following from the viewing public and rose to second most watched South African TV show on SABC3. “I’m thrilled the TV show was so well received. South Africans are clearly appreciating the art of magic and I’m honoured to be sharing it with them,” said the magician. With an honours degree graduate in electronic engineering, Mo resigned from a lucrative career as a project manager, in 2010, to pursue his passion for the art of magic. “Last year brought with it the realisation of my dream to share the art of magic with South Africans regularly on TV, taking it to them in their homes. During 2016, I plan to take the art of magic to people in their towns and cities to experience live.” This being his 14th year with the art of magic, the audience can expect to see some of the magic, mentalism (mind reading magic) and stunts as seen on the TV show, and other routines saved especially for the 90minute theatre show. He will also have you in stitches with his clean comedy and witty adlibs. The tour started in Durban with multiple soldout performances in

February, then proceeded to the Wild Coast and Port Elizabeth. The magician is now thrilled to bring the show to Pietermaritzburg as part of the tour. “I love performing the art of magic and the art form is best experienced live. I look forward to intriguing and entertaining the Pietermaritzburg audi ences with my theatre show, especially since this will be my first public theatre performance in the beautiful city,” said Mo. The brand ambassador for Child Welfare Durban & District, he will also be using the tour to spread awareness about the contribution made by the organisation towards “giving child hood back to children”. The magician’s ambitious nationwide tour makes history in that this is the first time a South African magician will tour every province with a theatre show, combining magic, mentalism and comedy. The show will then travel interna tionally. The show takes place at the Hexagon Theatre in Golf Road. Tickets R100 and R120 from Computicket. No under children under the age of six are allowed and no admittance after the start of the performance. Supplied.

Performance dates and times Thursday 21 July 7.30pm Friday 22 July 7.30pm Saturday 23 July 3.30pm (matinée) and 7.30pm.

T

HE Rainbow Theatre Company, a project of the Gay & Lesbian Network, will be performing My Body, My Life, My Decisions at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The piece looks at sexual orientation, gender identity and the prevalence of hate crimes within the South African context. It incorporates contemporary dance, theatre, performance art and poetry to explore the stories of selected hate crimes which affect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexed (LGBTI) community in southern Africa. Such crimes are motivated by prejudice and hate and include assault and corrective rape. There will be original images of well-known cases of such hate crimes to give voice to those victims and survivors who have been silenced. It is directed by Thobeka Bhengu and choreographed by Thobeka Bhengu and Smangaliso Mnguni, both of whom will also be performing. The National Arts Festival is an important event on the South African cultural calendar, and the biggest annual celebration of the arts on the African continent. It runs for 11 days and is held in the small university city of Grahamstown, which is situated in the Eastern Cape. The programme is divided between the main and fringe performance programmes. The Rainbow Theatre Company will be performing in the Fringe Programme, which gives upcoming artists and performers the chance to showcase their work. The event has always been open to all regardless of race, colour, sex or creed. The programme comprises drama, dance, physical theatre, comedy, opera, music, jazz, visual art exhibitions, film, student theatre, street theatre, lectures, craft fair, workshops, tours (of the city and surrounding historic places) and a children’s arts festival. “We’re looking for actors, singers, comedians, poets, and anyone who

wants to show off their talent to an appreciative and knowledgeable audience. The Fringe is South Africa’s only truly open platform for artists; there is no selection process and everyone who believes in their work is welcome to take part,” said Fringe Manager Zikhona Monaheng. Monaheng said that the programme attracts artists from all over South Africa as well as gaining an international representation, which has grown steadily since the inception of the World Fringe Alliance. “The Alliance is responsible for bringing in producers from Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Prague, Brighton, Perth, Adelaide and New York looking for work to showcase at their festivals, creating scope for productions to extend their footprint beyond 11 days in Grahamstown to countrywide tours and international seasons,” he said. The Rainbow Theatre Company was established in July 2009, with volunteers of the Gay & Lesbian Network managing the group. The Gay & Lesbian Network adopted community theatre as a means of creating awareness of LGBTI issues in a safe environment. The group performs at various workshops and events of the organisation and its partners. They also perform at anti-bulling campaigns at local schools. The group comprises of young men and women, between the ages 18 to 25 who are mostly unemployed or studying. Last year, the Rainbow Theatre Company performed at Jomba, a contemporary dance festival run by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Creative Arts. They were the first lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) drama group to be part of the festival. The Rainbow Theatre Company is sponsored by the National Lotteries Commission. For more information please contact the Gay & Lesbian Network on 033 342 6165 or visit www.gayles bian.org.za - Supplied.

tertiary institution. Selumetse, who is completing his final year in education, was one of the players that assisted Free State to two consecutive SAB U21 National Championships. He expressed his appreciation to SAB for the significant contribution they made in his life. “The SAB League has changed my life in a manner that words cannot explain. My talent was discovered through this league and I am now a few months away from being a university graduate thanks to the study assistance programme by SAB. I am looking forward to graduating and

Wise move by United JERRY BARNES

JERRY BARNES HE South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan says development programmes and junior soccer academies are crucial in producing players. The 2016 Safa SAB U21 National Championships started at the University of Limpopo in Polokwane on 9 July and run until 16 July and Jordaan said he believes that if young players are properly developed and junior academies are properly run, there will be stronger national teams in the future. The largest and most successful football development league in the country has established itself as the most trusted football hub for professional clubs, producing household names such as Andile Jali, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Themba Zwane. The launch of the tournament, held at SAB World of Beer, was attended by SAB League graduates, Themba Zwane (now a Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder) and Thabo Senong (National U23 head coach). A draw was held to mark the battle lines for the tournament. All nine provinces, plus a university select side - University Sport South Africa will be represented by the “cream of the crop” selected from the 30 000 players nationwide that participate in the SAB League. In line with the SAB League’s commitment to football development, 20 match officials, who will officiate during the tournament, will undergo a week of training. This will be conducted by qualified technical and physical instructors including former Fifa referee, Sylvester Ndaba. Also at the launch was Mojalefa Selumetse, a beneficiary of SAB’s latest innovation to the SAB League that sees selected players given an opportunity to pursue a career of their choice at any accredited

becoming an educated professional footballer.” SAB head of sustainability and transformation, Mpho Sadiki, said 2016 has been one of the most exciting seasons of the SAB League since the start of the brewer’s partnership with Safa. “We have been innovative in our commitment to football development with various initiatives such as the SAB League skills camps, higher education bursaries and player data monitoring. “This is a positive direction that SAB has taken and we look forward to an exciting finale of the season at the national championships,” Sadiki said.

FORMER Maritzburg United defender, Peter Petersen, believes the PSL outfit’s management made a wise and intelligent move by keeping the German-born coach, Enrst Middendorp. The Cape Town-born, former Moroka Swallows and Bafana Bafana player says keeping Middendorp make sense. “He is long now in South Africa and understands everything about local soccer, the culture, players and followers. To keep the head coach will also allow him to continue where he left off. He also proved to be the best for the club because he brought back stability and avoided relegation, and by extending his contract meant that United’s bosses are proud of him and really thinking big about the City of Choice and their fans,” said Petersen. Last Tuesday the Team of Choice officially started training. It has been reported the club is looking forward to laying a solid foundation for the new season under Middendorp, who has signed for a further two years with the club. In another move, United have signed Andrea Fileccia from Free State Stars. The striker revived his career and scored six goals in 11 PSL matches for Stars in the first half of the 2015/16 campaign before his season was disrupted by injury. It was under Middendorp at Stars, following the club’s changes to the technical team early last season, that Fileccia finally got to enjoy game time at the Bethlehem outfit, in what was his second campaign with the team. Now, after recovering from injury, the player has negotiated his release from Ea Lla Koto, with sources confirming he will be turning out for PMB United.

Maritzburg United announce new recruits >> ‘We will not be making any changes with the technical team’

NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com

M

ARITZBURG United is hoping to come back stronger after unveiling 10 new players for the upcoming 2016/17 PSL

season. Among the new arrivals scooped by the Team of Choice is former Bafana Bafana defender Bryce Moon, Belgian striker Andrea Fileccia and former Bloemfontein Celtics goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle. Moon’s contract with Mpumalanga Black Aces came to an end in June following the sale of the club, which is relocating to Cape Town under new management. Speaking at the media briefing on Tuesday at Harry Gwala Stadium, United chairman Farook Kadodia said the 2015/16 season was a frustrating one for the team. “It’s common knowledge that the club had a very unlucky, frustrating and stressful season. It was difficult to comprehend how a team that was considered by many to be playing well got stuck at the bottom. “This upcoming season we want to come up and build this team as a team of achievers.” Farook said the arrival of Ernst Middendorp at that critical time saved the team. “We will not be making any changes with the technical team. The coach brought about an improved mindset and fighting spirit that saved us from relegation last season and we are grateful that he has signed a further two years with the team.” He added they consulted with Middendorp prior to signing the new players. “We did not have the luxury of a huge budget to arrange a lot of big-name. quality players. but we have done our best to secure quality players. We believe that 2016/17 will be a year that supporters will be part of the team.” The 10 new players are Bryce Moon, Bongani Mpande, Andrea Fillecia, Bevan Fransman, Lebohang Maboe, Themba Tshabalala, Dennis Wieldiech, Luyanda Ntshangase, Devon Saal and Blessing Moyo. Maritzburg United has also promoted three Pietermaritzburg players from the club’s MultiChoice Diski team. Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, Moon said signing with Maritzburg United was an easy move. “Home is where the heart is and I’ve been a part of this team from way back when it was started with my dad and uncle. I’m happy to be back, looking forward to guiding the youngsters in the team and passing on some of my experience to them.” Moon said even EDT though Maritzburg United had a tough season last year he believes they still they have potential to return stronger. “They had a very tough season last year, but the team has proved they have poR tential and quality 100ml players. “Hopefully we can “ORIGINAL” get some silverware started at Maritzburg United.”
