WATER shortage protest in Willowfontein last Friday took a turn for the worse when a 10 year-old boy was seriously injured after being shot in the mouth. Skhumbuzo Soni, a Grade 3 pupil at Willowfontein Primary School, was shot in the mouth with a rubber bullet on his way to school when police tried to disperse a crowd of angry residents who had barricaded the road with burning tyres and rocks. Skhumbuzo’s distraught mother Thembi Soni said she heard via Facebook that her son had been injured during the protest. “I was at work when I saw a picture of my son’s bloodied face on Facebook and I became hysterical; I am angry because he was just on his way to school and was not part of the crowd that was protesting. “He was in school uniform and the police should have seen that

HE police swooped on illegal shebeens in Pietermaritzburg, closing down six of the illegal drinking establishments at the weekend. Mountain Rise police infiltrated informal settlements in the Copesville area, targeting shebeens, which are believed to be the root of violent crimes in the area. The intelligence-driven operation resulted in six illegal liquor outlets being shut down, and two of their owners being taken into custody. The move comes after two murders in the area at the weekend, which are believed to have stemmed from drunken and disorderly behaviour in the shebeens. In the first case, a man was stabbed to death in the vicinity of a shebeen in the Swapo B section during the early hours of Saturday morning. Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry said a woman, who was using a pit toilet outside the shebeen heard a man screaming that he had been stabbed. The woman hurried off to call an ambulance

while the man, who had three stab wounds in the back, fell down and died. Police search and rescue officers were called to retrieve the man’s body and he was declared dead by paramedics who arrived shortly afterwards. The second murder took place 24 hours later in the Swapo A section. Maistry said a resident was walking home when he came across a body lying on a pathway. The body was covered in blood and had sustained several stab wounds to the arm and neck. With both incidents occurring in the vicinity of illegal liquor outlets, a team of Mountain Rise police station’s crime prevention officers joined the cluster’s Crime Intelligence Unit to take down the shebeens. Under the command of station commissioner Brigadier Boxer Pillay and Crime Intelligence Captain Rumen Maistry, the team banged down the doors of the shebeens, arresting their owners and confiscating the liquor. Two shebeen owners were arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence, and four other shebeens were closed. Maistry said about R25 000 worth of liquor was seized. “Mountain Rise police are working around the clock to trace the criminals who have committed these violent acts of murder,” Maistry said. Fanotainment and Lerumo Events will be holding auditions at the Winston Churchill Theatre on 24 September in search of three local artists who will battle it out at the annual Impi 2016 event at the end of November. New app to ECHO record crime introduced

TRUMPET, a mobile application designed to record crime in residential areas, if launched in Pietermaritzburg, will help with keeping a record of crime in Pietermaritzburg suburbs giving an on-the-ground report of statistics. With instant messaging groups members of the group will receive notifications of messages sent in the group. However, with ttrumpet, members will be able to filter messages in order to only see the ones they want or which are pertinent to them. It also has different channels catering for various needs including security, municipal and general chats. Ttrumpet director Charles Murray, said that the application allows crime trends to be recorded, which is not the case with instant messaging groups. “The app allows people to draw trends about crime from the messages sent in the chat. People also have the option to filter their messages and only see things they want to see. “A lot of times people want to be involved in a group, but because of the continuous flow of messages people often leave a group. With ttrumpet this is eliminated as the person can

change their notification settings. People can then, in their own time, go back into the chat and read the messages to catch up on what is happening in their area.” Murray said that one of the benefits of ttrumpet allows the public to view crime in the area from the ground and gives a real picture about crime in their areas. “It allows you, as the consumer, to see what is happening in your area without bombarding you with information.” The application, which was launched two years ago, has been conceptualised to assist with the reporting and recording of crime in order to bring statistics to a local level. Currently ttrumpet is working successfully in parts of the country including areas in the Western Cape and Gauteng. “In the areas that have used ttrumpet there has been a very good response. In some cases crimes have been prevented. The general public love the app because it makes the view on crime much better. “There’s clearly a need for this kind of app so we will continually be improving it and working on it, but so far it’s been great,” said Murray. Murray added that the ttrumpet team plan to visit the province later this month to promote the application and meet with various community policing forums to explain the benefit of ttrumpet. The application, which is free, can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or iStore.

Students living in residence at UKZN were also asked to peacefully evacuate the buildings for the recess period. UKZN have not commented on whether the protests will affect finalyear students obtaining their degrees and result in many students falling behind in their academic calendar. In a media briefing about the protests at Westville campus last Friday, university management said that they have been open to negotiation and engagement with

ROTESTING students at the University of KwaZuluNatal caused chaos over the past weeks with constant standoffs with police in and around the campus in Scottsville. Members of the public, including children, have been innocent victims of mass marches, rubber bullets, tear gas and roads blocked off preventing people from getting to their homes. Protesters also burnt down a hall at the Pietermaritzburg campus where students write their exams. At Howard College the law library was also burnt down and priceless thesis by past law students were lost forever. The university have since closed the

the student leadership in the form of the SRC, however, students have chosen to engage only with council. “I would like to apologise to all members of staff and students who are committed to the successful completion of the academic programme for the inconvenience caused. We appreciate your commitment and commend you for your patience during this volatile time. “The university has been meeting with various interested parties who have shown concern in finding an amicable solution to the current situation,” said UKZN vicechancellor, Dr Albert van Jaarsveld. Students have claimed on the UKZN Facebook page that they will not stop fighting for the cause until the university

management heeds to their pleas. Van Jaarsveld said UKZN agrees to put a moratorium on the disciplinary action against students who are related to protest actions and the violence on campus. They will take an alternate route of engaging with a neutral and independent legal person agreed to by both parties. “The university would never participate in such activities, we have no objection to participating in an open and transparent process that is conducted with integrity. As per our university policies, UKZN does not pay bail for students arrested during violent protest action,” he said. A delegation of five people will present to a full council meeting on 19 September. “We are fully aware that this issue is a

statutory matter and that even if council were to take a decision on the matter, the final approval lies with the Minister of Higher Education. “The university will remain on recess and preparations are under way for very stringent measures of access control, among others, to exclude any unwelcome elements within the precincts of the university campuses. “The university is not and has not engaged in any process or discussions regarding the 2017 fee increment as yet. “We still await guidance on the matter from national government. We therefore urge students to return to UKZN on 20 September ready to attend classes with no further disruptions,” said Van Jaarsveld.

Burning a varsity residence devoid of logic 12

READ with horror how disabled students narrowly escaped being burnt to death when someone or some people decided to burn their residence, which houses 68 disabled female students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal recently. This act reminded me of a Japanese man who knifed to death close to 20 disabled people in a care home because he felt they did not deserve to live as life for them was presumably unbearable. Apparently, the man who has since undergone psychiatric treatment in Japan, had initially notified the Japanese parliament about his perceived need to annihilate the disabled if they found their existence to be a burden. As a disabled person, I find this gross, unjust and uncalled for. The greatest scientist in the world is a wheelchair-bound man who cannot speak, but who has since made a significant contribution to modern science through illuminating lectures. Some of the finest performing artists in the world, especially musicians, are disabled men and women whose lives have contributed to making the world a more humane and enjoyable place. So the choice of burning a residence for disabled people begs an explanation as it seems to be devoid of logic, or simply, uncalled for, if not childish, cruel and fascistic. To start with, it does not make sense to burn institutions that we wish to use for our advancement. But again, it

Perhaps for some, if it was right to do it during the fight against Bantu education in the apartheid era, they may argue, then it is still right now. I beg to differ. Getting rid of colonial symbols like statues is a symbolic fight against the betrayal of a racist past which undermined taxpayers and South African citizens just because they were black - that one I can comprehend. But burning buildings or institutions of

learning, which our children wish to access for free does not make sense. Choosing a place that houses the disabled to register one’s anger and frustration makes me doubt the mental fitness of those who did it. Do they not deserve to go to a mental institution for psychiatrically related treatment? I wonder. I am glad that student leaders have distanced themselves from acts of violence committed against institutions of learning. One would have been

puzzled as to what kind of future leaders despised the disabled and their place of learning. But again, in a world that is full of drugs and alcohol, one would not be surprised if we now have in our midst young people who feel the need to target the weak to vent their frustration. How can one interpret the fact that youngsters, who take hard drugs, are capable of raping a vulnerable old lady in the community? In a normal society, the disabled

and the elderly are protected and cared for, and even showered with loving gestures, as we have been accustomed to seeing society’s role models as in the likes of our new city mayor, Themba Njilo, organising parties and tours for the elderly using personal resources as a successful businessman. It is possible that the idea of burning a residence for the disabled was not only sick, but also informed by the use of a destructive substance, which has obscured the thinking of whoever came up with such a weird idea. I wish the culprits could be treated like the Japanese person who slew disabled people in that country as a way of freeing them from their misery, by going to a psychiatric hospital. Who decides who is happy or miserable? What is misery? Is society not sick in general? Who determines that physical disability is the only form of misery? What about poverty? Would you burn the houses of poor people just because they are poor? Would you burn the outside building of an unemployed person just because they have no job and they lead a miserable life or they cannot afford to pay their way through life? What about an unhappy woman who has a husband that cheats on her as a way of life? Would you kill such a woman because her life is perceived as miserable? Who said the disabled, the elderly, the poor, the unemployed and the abused cannot achieve freedom from their so-called misery if given support and love? I am think that whoever decided that setting alight a residence for the disabled was a right thing to do, needs a lot of help and love as well. Maybe disability represents a part of him or her that is sick, unfulfilled or wanting and getting rid of the disabled would be an act of redemption for their weakness in their sick minds. Maybe they genuinely need medical attention.

OMEN’S Day at the Gift of the Givers Careline in Pietermaritzburg is like every day - there are no special celebrations or song and dance. Simply responding to her plea, giving sound to her voice, through kind compassion, non-judgment and respect for her as the master in her own journey; is a precious gift we extend to women, children, the aged, the destitute, the downtrodden, the lost and the bereaved. However, this 2016 Women’s Month, we could not escape the many invitations that took us into schools,

clinics, communities and onto several media platforms. From being moved by themes such as “Still I rise”, to the promotion of girl-child education through the distribution of sanitary towels and personal hygiene packs, education about current issues prevalent in society and creating safe spaces for women to express themselves about issues that affect them directly, yet are pushed under the rug and alerting and encouraging them to use recourses that are available. Not all is gloom and doom. We were inspired and motivated by the

personal stories of individuals who found their way back from death defying experiences. They stand out as the beacons of hope in society. It is most heartening to hear women speak up passionately and voice their opinions, needs and concerns. It is this resiliency and tenacity that spurs you on to continue to champion the cause of women, children, the aged and the destitute. It’s been exhilarating on the one hand to know that we have made progress on many fronts but an equal weight sits in my heart knowing that there is still much to do.

Al Quran is the miracle of miracles PROPHET Muhammed - peace be upon him - was the last and final messenger of God sent to the world and his message is valid until eternity. Since his message is everlasting and the miracle given to him by God is also everlasting and examineable by us all for all times. Al Quran is the miracle of miracles for all times. It has proved to be a miracle 1 400 years ago and will continue to do so today and forever. The Quran was hand-written by the scribe of the prophet (p.b.u.h) in the prophet’s presence as it was revealed to him orally by the angel Gabriel, bit-by-bit over a span of 23

years. After the prophets demise, his close companions had four copies of the Quran hand-written from the original Arabic one (from the one that the Prophet had verified personally) and sent to the different corners of the Islamic Empire. Two of these Qurans are intact and are in existence today. One is in the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul, Turkey and the other is in Tashkent Uzbekistan. The United Nations has verified the authenticity of the Quran in Tashkent with a certificate that is displayed next to the glass cabinet in which the Quran is kept. Many histo-

rians have testified to the authenticity of the Quran as being authentic as it was revealed to the Prophet (p.b.u.h). Among them, William Muir, a staunch critic of Islam who testified to the originality of the Quran in the 18th century by comparing the original to the copies. They are exactly the same today in every letter. Allah says in Chapter 15 verse 9 of the noble Quran: “We have, without doubt, sent down the message and we will assuredly guard it (from corruption). Chapter 4 verse 82: “Do they not consider the Quran with care? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein

IMAGINE my surprise and the surprise of other commuters when I paid my usual R9 taxi fare on Monday morning only to be told that the fare had increased to R10. I questioned when we were notified and was told there had been notices in taxis two weeks ago. Obviously I, and many commuters, must have been blind because we never saw any notification. On the way back home that afternoon, there were suddenly visible notices in the taxis. Give us ample notice about an increase as you need us more than we need you. You transport us in vehicles that should have been scrapped years ago. Nothing worked in the taxi I travelled in [on Monday] - there were no handles to wind the windows up or down and the heat, petrol gauge and speedometer were all non-functional. According to an article in The Witness in June, the taxi association was to give notice of fare increases to commuters before 1 July or else it could only increase fares in July 2017. Sanitary products and menstrual hygiene are basic human necessities and rights, and not luxuries. If condoms can be freely available to all, then there is no reason why essential items like sanitary pads cannot be freely available from public hospitals and clinics. According to reports, an estimated seven million girls miss school for some days every month because of a lack of access to hygiene products to take care of themselves during that time of the month. Girls in learning institutions should not be deprived of education because of a problem that is easily resolvable. Helping girls to manage menstruation can improve school and university attendance. I support the call for sanitary towels to be made accessible to the less privileged females in our country.

ILDLANDS started Arbor Week with several tree-athons nationwide from 1 to 7 September planting 100 000 trees. Wildlands Trees for Life project was started in 2004 in Kwa-Zulu Natal, where community members were encouraged to plant indigenous trees at home as a way of “growing” themselves out of poverty. The project expanded at a rate Wildlands could have never anticipated. The “tree-preneurs” barter the trees they grow with Wildlands for water tanks, bicycles, building materials, health and wellness hampers or groceries. Each of the 100 000 trees this coming week were grown and nurtured by tree-preneurs and each tree has a story linked to it. Tree-a-thon events are being

‘Treepreneurs’ plant for Arbor Week hosted by Wildlands in Durban, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Magaliesburg, Acornhoek and the Western Cape, with support from their partners and donors. About 5 200 indigenous trees were planted in Cornubia, north of Durban, another 5 000 in Richards Bay, 4 000 in Magaliesburg, Gauteng, PMB, Acornhoek and the Western Cape with the assistance of partners. A further 86 000 trees have been distributed to just under 2 500 schools, through the Department of Education, and will be planted throughout Arbor month to further build on our greening efforts. “We are always honoured to be joined by our corporate donors and partners at our tree-planting events as they never think twice about getting their hands dirty. Zuzulwazi Junior School in KwaMpande marked the start of Arbor Week by encouraging pupils to take care of indigenous trees. Pupils and teachers planted yellowwood and Ficus Thonningii trees that were donated to the school by the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research at the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Scottsville Primary School Grade 7 pupil, Kiara Naidoo, recently participated in the National South Africa Open Table Tennis Championships in Pietermaritzburg. She won gold medals in three categories U13 girls singles, team events and dou bles and two bronze in the U15 singles and mixed doubles. She is the U13 girls’ SA champion and her brother Yukail Naidoo, a former Scottsville Primary pupil, is the U15 boys’ SA champion. Kiara also com peted in the uMgungund lovu District Schools tour nament at Maritzburg Col lege and came first in the U15 girls’ singles. She has been se lected to take part in the na tional schools championships in Pretoria from 10 to 16 December.

ASED on the loss of his six-month-old son Nqaba, Pietermaritzburg author, Thulani Gumede’s book Nqaba Grief and Hope, has become a book of choice for helping people to deal with the loss of a loved one. Gumede and his wife left their first born with the nanny as they normally did when they went to work. However, later the nanny phoned Nqaba’s mother to tell her that the child was unresponsive in his cot. Gumede, who works in Durban immediately returned home to find that his son had died in what the doctors termed, a cot death. “There was no reason given and up

Gumede said that art and writing had always been his passion and he found an outlet for the pain through writing, so he wrote a book about his experience to help others who might find themselves asking questions, seeking answers and dealing with a similar pain. “Everyone’s reaction to tragedy is different. For me, I had to be strong for my wife. “There were times that I cried, but I found that I could not express my feelings. I was eventually diagnosed with depression and had to be put off work for a month. “It was only when I nearly lost my life in a car accident that I realised I had to deal with my loss and work through it because I was given a second chance,” he said. The book deals with grief and how to work through it using Gumede’s experience. “Yes, there were times that I

questioned why God took my son. There were times when others asked us if we prayed enough and there were times when people would tell us that at least he was only six months and told us to have another one to replace the loss. “Regardless of how old a child is, losing them leaves a hole in you. They cannot be replaced, they cannot be forgotten. To heal you have to work through your feelings and remember them every day,” said Gumede. Nqaba died in 2014 and the Gumede’s welcomed their second child a few weeks ago. “We waited, we grieved and we were ready to love another child. Not to love him because we were replacing Nqaba, but to love him for himself,” he said. Gumede’s book in now in its third print run and is available at Bible Centre, Adams Book Shop and on Amazon. He is currently working on his second book.

‘Ace’ returns to former primary school JERRY BARNES THE former South African 23, Moroka Swallows and Thanda Royal Zulu player Phumelele “Ace” Bhengu may seem unlucky to many, but his community in Swayimana (near Wartburg) appear to be the luckiest. Last week Bhengu remembered his old primary school and the well travelled striker, who last season played for Super Sport United, donated uniforms, soccer balls and a soccer kit to Kwenzakwethu Primary School pupils. Principal S.Z. Mbatha said the entire school came to a standstill when Ace entered the premises with a load of goodies. “The excitement and the atmosphere was just unbelievable and out of this World. We just love him, he is our big brother, father figure and a good role model for our children and the communi ty,” said Mbatha. Bhengu said he decided to visit his former school and give back to his community so that young children can learn from him. “I just wanted to show them that this is where it all started. I was once a small boy running and kicking the ball around on the same premises and for the same school. “Heroes are not heroes if they don’t

JERRY BARNES I AM not just disappointed, but emotionally broken, hurt, crushed and lost for words. For more than six weeks I have been walking around my area, Eastwood, Panorama, Cinderella Park and other nearby areas, writing letters, sending e-mails and calling on business people and companies asking for help or donations in order to make my annual Ward 34 Sports Day possible. To say I’m disappointed is not enough or the right word, because companies around Eastwood and Panorama were not interested, in fact most played delaying tactics with me. What I’m trying to understand is how you run your business or company in a particular area, but you can’t support your community. What is even more disappointing is that there are more than 15 companies or businesses in the area, that are not worried about the community. According to my snap survey, most of them are not involved in any community uplifting projects. Another a bitter pill to swallow is that after I appealed for help some people contacted me, promised me heaven and earth, but not one fulfilled their promises. As a community activist, a parent and diehard follower of sports and a Panorama-Eastwood resident, my annual Ward 34 Sports Day is scheduled for 29 October, but our sports ground still has no goalposts. On a positive note however, I thank salute donors and sponsors such as Poobie Naidoo’s Sports, Kara Nichhas, Department of Sports and Recreation, Gift of the Givers Mpi Mchunu and Crescent Motors who came on board to make it a success. Willowfountain Cricket Club captain Bongani Gwamanda and senior player Phopho Nzimande asked Poobie Naidoo for sponsorship for the club recently. “I was really touched by their request. To think that in the township there are youngsters trying to put something together and play sport, but they can’t and this made me think twice. “It is always encouraging to see our youngsters playing sport instead of getting involved in social ills. “As I have said before, things are tough out there, but we will always

help if possible,” said Naidoo. Nzimande said his club has boys and girls and the donation of the cricket equipment from Naidoo helps a lot. “It is heart breaking that around Willowfontain a lot of youngsters want to learn or play cricket, but there is no basic equipment. “We are very happy that Naidoo took time to look at our request and donated the equipment. We say thank you because this will save or keep our youngsters in sport instead of getting into trouble by doing bad things,” said Nzimande.
