Malinga said her cousin lived alone in a two-room house on the same property as her elder brother. She said upon investigating the colleague found

blood on the walls in Mpanza’s bedroom and raised the alarm. “She alerted the family and we began to look for her with the help of community members and the police. As a family we are shocked, we still had hopes of finding her alive. “Why would anyone do this to a woman in Women’s Month? Nokuthula was harmless and did not deserve to die like this. She

AN Imbali man was allegedly killed after being assaulted by the com munity in an act of vigilantism the man apparently was accused of stabbing a child earlier that day. According to ER24’s Werner Vermaak, paramedics were called to the Imbali area at about 11.30pm on Saturday to treat a man who was allegedly assaulted by community members. Vermaak said people found near the man were “somewhat hostile” and indicated that the man had allegedly stabbed a young child ear lier that evening. “Paramedics were informed that the child had already been rushed to a nearby hospital prior to their arrival,” Vermaak said. It is believed the paramedics were threatened by the community when they tried to treat the injured man. “It was found he had sustained multiple stab wounds over his body as well as a fractured skull and face. “Paramedics had to place him on life support en route to hospital,” Vermaak said. Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said police got a call from the hospital on Sunday morning saying the man had died. “We were told by the man’s relative that he was assaulted by the community, but we have noth ing tangible as yet. However, investi gations are continuing,” Ngobese said. It is unclear whether the man did stab a child before he was assaulted.

HE community of Mpumuza is in shock after the body of a 36year-old woman was found buried under rocks beside a riverbank last Thursday. The discovery prompted police to launch a manhunt for the killers, according to the SAPS, of Nokuthula Mpanza, who was last seen alive on 5 August at around 1pm. Mpanza’s body was discovered by members of the Community Crime Prevention Association in the area who went in search for her after the disappearance. The police suspect Mpanza was killed at another location and her body dumped beside the riverbank in the night. Her cousin Nompumelelo Malinga said they filed a missing person’s report at the Plessislaer police station last Wednesday. “The last time anyone spoke to her was on that Friday [5 August] afternoon when she said she was preparing to take part in the Spar Women’s race. Alarms were raised when no one had heard from her two days after the race and

Plessislaer police spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela confirmed that a woman’s body had been found. “The body was found facing down, covered by a pile of stones beside a riverbank. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage, but police are investigating.” The police are working around the clock to catch the perpetrators.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Popular PMB florist mourned by hundreds >> ‘It was his endearing qualities that made him so popular’ SABELO NSELE

UNDREDS of people came out to say their final goodbye to well-known Pietermaritzburg businessman George Ram, who was laid to rest on Sunday. The owner of Ram’s Flower Market died last Friday. His daughter, Suhan, paid a moving tribute during the service held at Truro Hall, Northdale, saying her father had touched many lives. “I feel frail, I feel weak and I could not be sadder. Dad, we desperately miss you. There is so much more that we want to share with you. “We pray and hope to follow your legacy in the way that you wanted us to. Every precious moment I spent with you is etched in my memory and will be forever with me,” she said. Suhan said her father had given her “the greatest” parental love.

“I felt him, I enjoyed him, he loved us. He nurtured us,” she said. Advocate Ranjiv Nirghin, president of the Midlands Hindu Society, said Ram’s “untimely” death had left a huge void not only in his family, but in the community at large. “We are aware of his silent, yet immense contribution made to society and religious organisations in the upliftment of our Dharma, and we pray that his positive spirit and the impact he made on the lives of all that he came into contact with will stand him in good stead as he journeys home. It is through the good deeds that he has done and the lives that he made a positive contribution to that his legacy will live on. “In fact, it was his warm personality and endearing qualities that made him and his business so popular in Pietermaritzburg. “He made everyone who walked

through his doors feel so special …” Grandson Kiran Ram posted his farewell message on Facebook. “I love you nana [grandfather]. I wish I said it to you more often than I did. It is not goodbye, just see you later. Thank you for all the memories, the laughs and trying to teach me to sing when I was little. “Thank you for all the lessons and seemingly insignificant moments that are now some of my most precious and treasured memories. You really were my best friend.” Relative Naresh Amichand said it was sore to lose Ram. “It is very sad to lose such a religious stalwart. He gave so much to the community of Pietermaritzburg,” he said. Ram’s Flower Market owner George Ram and some of his staff. PHOTO: FILE

OUR housemates are lucky to be alive after a bus, whose driver had been shot in what is thought to have been a botched robbery attempt, crashed into the lounge where they had been watching television just seconds earlier. The driver, identified as 41-yearold Lindani Gwala, was found dead in his seat, with a bullet wound to the head, after his bus veered off the road and crashed into a house at the Beacon Hill Estate just outside Pietermaritzburg. Eastwood, Gwala stopped to pick up two men on the corner of Birmingham Road. Maistry said Gwala was about to turn onto the road leading to Table Mountain when the two men leapt up from their seats, one holding a firearm and the other a knife. The gunman threatened the passengers, telling them to get down on the floor. Gwala was instructed to take the turn to Table Mountain and, as he did, the gunman placed his weapon under Gwala’s chin and fired through his head. It was then the bus veered right and crashed through the electric fence of Beacon Hill Estate. The bus narrowly missed an empty house as it crashed down an embankment, clipping a light pole a few metres away from a massive electricity pylon, before swerving right and smashing into the lounge of a nearby house.

The TBT bus that slammed into the side of a Beacon Hill Estate home on Monday night after the driver was shot dead in what is suspected to be a botched robbery.

The residents, who were watching TV at the time, saw the bus hurtling towards them through the window and dashed out of the back door, narrowly escaping being hit by the vehicle. The two attackers fled when the bus came to a halt, and were seen scurrying into bushes nearby. Maistry said the hunt for the men is under way. A clear motive has yet to be established. Gwala’s younger brother, Sgcino Madonda, said the family is traumatised after hearing news of his death. Madonda appealed to anyone with information on the whereabouts of his brother’s killers to come forward and assist the police. “We are very shocked. He was the breadwinner of the family. “He was a very good man and was full of jokes. “He was friendly and he will be missed,” he said.

R309 million budgeted as a onceoff gratuity to nonreturning councillors SABELO NSELE GOLDEN handshakes for Msunduzi councillors, who have not cracked the nod to be included in the new council, will cost taxpayers close to R2 million. The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has confirmed it has budgeted R309 million as a once-off gratuity to non-returning councillors. The payment is based on the calculation of three months of the

last salary they earned. In Msunduzi, 22 of the 37 ward councillors, who had served in the previous term, will not see another five years in office. While a handful have resigned, most are heading into the political wilderness after they failed to secure their future at their party’s nomination process. The ANC accounts for most changes as it is bringing 17 new faces to the council, while the DA has six new people for council chambers.

On 29 August, 2011, the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers recommended that qualifying non-returning councillors, who had served a full term of office and did not return, should be paid a once-off gratuity equal to three months’ pensionable salary. Cogta said most councillors do not have other formal employment. Consequently, some councillors were unable to service their debts,

meet their basic financial living requirements, or pay school fees for their children, and some stand to lose their property after leaving office. “This is to allow such councillors breathing space to solicit other remunerative employment,” the department said in a statement. The amounts to be paid will only be finalised once municipal councils have been constituted Msunduzi council is expected to be constituted this week.

“Regardless of the number of councillors not returning to office, the department will have to stay within the budgeted R309 million,” the department said. In 2011, more than 4 000 individual applications were submitted and screened. A total of R139,3 million was paid to former councillors who served from 2006 to 2011. “The payment of this gratuity was done in an open and a transparent manner, hence this process received no audit queries.”

HE Jabu Ndlovu Foundation, the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) and the Ward 19 councillor, Caiphas Ndawonde, took the initiative and got involved in a clean-up campaign that improved people’s lives. The campaign took place last Friday at the Imbali sports field in Unit 1 that had been turned into an illegal dump site. The area was chosen after the community pointed out that littering had been going on for years there. Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Luhle Ndlovu-Mbanjwa said the area had become a serious health hazard. “This is supposed to be a recreational area for the youth, instead it’s been turned into an illegal dump site. “It’s important for us to raise awareness about keeping the environment clean, which is why we said let us go to the community and clean the area so they can see how important it is to have a clean environment.” Ndlovu said they started a programme to teach people how to preserve the environment. Ndawonde said in his area illegal dumping sites have mushroomed. “We are very concerned with all the illegal dumping sites we have in this ward.

At the cleanup the Jabu Ndlovu Foundation team (from left) Makhosi Dimba, Bongiwe Mchunu, Sanele Ndlovu, Luhle NdlovuMbanjwa, Malusi Ndlovu and Caiphas Ndawonde. “You find piles of rubbish on every corner, from bottles to disposable nappies and it’s especially dangerous because children play everywhere and this poses a health threat.” Ndawonde said the culprits are residents who dump their waste just anywhere instead of disposing of it in designated garbage containers.

“We have plans for developing this area further so it can be used by the community. “We want to revive sporting activities for the youth in the ward.” The area that was cleaned up will be fenced with multicoloured tyres to ensure that dumping does not continue.

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

I

T is becoming increasingly difficult to be a parent and I am sure the pressures of the modern economy have a lot to do with this. I do not like to see devaluing family bonds as a result of separation, divorce and estranged relations. How do you, as a parent, promote matrimony or marriage to your children when the economy puts strain on relationships and the family institution bungles under economic pressure, as well as psychological and emotional insecurities that go with it? What do I tell my children when it is time for them to be matched with young men who will eventually come into their lives? Do I tell them to fall in love with a stranger who may one day run away from them for whatever reason. Why do relations seem feeble and short-lived nowadays? What has the rand done to power relations in the bedroom? Does the relationship lose its value because of societal expectations, glitter, glamour and everything opposed to simplicity? I know that women love beauty, comfort, leisure, pleasure, sophistication and all things expensive. I know that men love to be free from debt and financial pressure, and do not like a partner who finds reasons to spend money or waste hard-earned resources. I also know that reasonable men pride themselves on being dependable and they love to please their partners, if it is only to make them feel like real men, whatever that means. Still things do go wrong. They go wrong because it is in the nature of women to push their men to the limit or suffer from overexpectation. Things go wrong because it in the

Foundation of successful families nature of men to pack up and explode when they have had enough of a pushy, demanding and even extravagant lover. Yet again the times they are a changing. Gone are the days when only men earned an income or generated wealth. Where does that put the status of the male ego in a relationship? I know that guys do not like a woman who brags and is independent, egotistic and self-important. However, a degree of self-sufficiency, on the part of the woman, is also appreciated and welcome. Then what is the problem? The problem is that females may have a weakness of not being able to relate to their partner in a healthy manner when they are too independent. The social expectation that a man is the provider messes up the understanding and mental attitude of some women, who suddenly find themselves having to be providers and bread winners. This confused understanding of a traditional man’s role distorts their perception of reality. How are they supposed to relate to this man, who may be bringing in less income, or his source of income is irregular, unreliable, insufficient or humble? A revolutionary mental attitude is the only way out of this challenging social reality that most couples – young and old – have to contend with nowadays. It is revolutionary for a man to accept that his female counterpart may be earning more money than him, and live with it or come to terms with it. This necessarily also means that her views and feelings are

important and she is a key player in decision-making. It is revolutionary for a woman to see a man as an equal who may not be financially strong or stable, yet they need all the love and support as well as a feeling that they are valued, appreciated and welcomed. There is nothing as sad and even foolish as a woman who fails to accept her man and make him happy because of his social status. At least I have an idea of what to say to my children in future. I will tell my children that it is important to choose the type of man who is rich in morals because a partnership with such a person may be more full-filling than money. I say this because I am tired of reading in the newspapers that an economically stable couple has ended their relationship due to infidelity, poor moral conduct or suspicions. Many couples are divorcing, separating or keeping a distance because of poor morals and mutual jealousies. Some couples are reportedly killing each other and making their children suffer due to poor relations. I can tell my children that cheating on your partner, spouse or lover is the number one cause of family squabbles, tensions and going separate ways. Another challenge or cause of unhappiness and discontent in relationships is people’s mental attitude to economic and social power. There is nothing as sad as witnessing a woman with a bad or domineering attitude at home because of her financial muscle. It is equally sad to watch a father who is so miserly that he fails to take care of his partner and

children’s needs because saving money is more important to him than making his dependants happy. It is only when we can understand these matters and embrace good or ethical conduct, shun infidelity, promote mutual acceptance and understanding regardless of power relations, that we can try or endeavour to be good spouses and parents who can sustain the family institution well or create a home and family environment in which children can be raised healthily. • Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

Thank you to exceptional hospital staff I WOULD like to thank all the Imbali AWard nurses, doctors, and superiors at Edendale Hospital. They gave us all such warm and amazing weekend. All of them were caring, loving and sympathetic to us as patients. They treated us like family and made our stay at the hospital bearable. May God may prosper and shower them with blessings. Thank you for new found hope on the public healthcare system.

More of the same for Copesville

Nosipho Thusi Pietermaritzburg

THE great Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing something over and over again and expecting the same result”. This echoes voters in the recent local elections who live in the troubled Copesville community. Was it not them striking and destroying property lately because of a lack of service delivery by ANC councillors? One would have thought they would use their vote as a powerful weapon and tool in the name of change, but astonishingly this wasn’t to be. As someone, who used to live in this district, I was bemused to see that the ANC received close to 80% of the vote to keep control. Come on voters, what were you thinking? Enjoy more of the same over the next five years. MALUSI MAGWAZA Pietermaritzburg

Thank you for effort in elections THANK you to all those put in time, effort and energy into the recent election campaign for me as an Independent candidate. As I pull away from this campaign, and as in the past, my focus will remain on demands for quality service delivery for the community. JAY SINGH former Ward 30 councillor

HE Sunflower Fund launched their new campaign in the run up to Sunflower Day on 16 September. The new “Tope”, which stands for Tube of Hope, can be bought from Pick n Pay or one of the fund’s retail partners - Round Table, selected ICPA pharmacies and the online store, Zando. Being very versatile, the Tope can be used in a wide variety of sports or outdoor activities and will be available in six colours and offers practical functionality and gives wearers the opportunity to show their support for

this important cause. The Tope will be available in small for R20 and large for R25. “It’s an affordable, multipurpose article of clothing that can be worn as a headband, mask, scarf, cap or arm-band,” said The Sunflower Fund CEO, Alana James “I am delighted to see that The Sunflower Fund continues its vital work. I am also excited at the prospect of a new signature campaign, in the form of Sunflower Day where we have remained true to our roots, but have also had the opportunity to move with the times

by introducing the Tope. “I hope our loyal supporters are as captivated with the Tope as we are and encourage the public to buy them now,” said Tina Botha, founder patron of the fund. Topes are also integral to The Sunflower Fund’s inaugural schools competition. “For the first time The Sunflower Fund is offering a first prize to the value of R20 000 to the school that shows the greatest Sunflower spirit on Sunflower Day. “Take photos of your class, or even your entire school, doing something creative with the Topes, upload them to The Sunflower Fund’s Facebook Page – Sunflower Day Schools Competition – Gallery, and get your family and friends ‘liking’ your entries,” said James. The winning school will receive a donation of goods of the school’s choice, to the value of R20 000. The second prize is goods to the value of R10 000 and a third prize is goods to the value of R5 000. Prizes have been sponsored by the SABC Foundation. It has been a case of “out with the old and in with the new”, with the fund’s new signature campaign, Sunflower Day replacing Bandana Day that had previously taken place in October. - Supplied.

>> Winners will walk away with prizes valued at R57 500 INALISTS are gearing up for this year’s Face of KZN Model Search contest to be held on 3 September at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. The contest, in its fourth year, will see the winners walking away with prizes valued at R57 500 from various sponsors. Event organiser, Bengs Nkosi, said the judges has the tough job of selecting from the 563 applicants. At the event attendants will rub shoulders with celebrities and have a chance to be seen on national television. Nkosi said the competition aims to unify models of all races and gender. “Men and women of any race were invited to enter. Contestants were carefully selected by a panel of professional judges, who have extensive experience in the modelling industry.” Adhering to international modelling standards for Miss South Africa and Miss World, contestants are between the ages of 15 and 35, must not be engaged, married or pregnant. They must currently be at school, university or college and be willing to do voluntary work with a non-profit organisation of their choice. The contest must seek to address key issues like albinism, bullying, gangterism, racism, violence, HIV/Aids, xenophobia, violence, teenage pregnancy and other social issues affecting the youth. Proceeds from the event will be used to buy school uniforms for less fortunate pupils from rural schools in and around Pietermaritzburg. Sponsors for the competition include Bengs

My name is Simphiwe 36 years from Edendale. Thank you so much to Mama Sofia, I won 6.5 Million in lotto. I went to Mama Sofia with only R100, she gave me small nlungi powder and told me to use it when I am playing lotto. She also gave me KALUNGI muthi to put under my pillow when I am going to sleep after which I dream and remembered the numbers. Today can be your day, never loose hope, Mama Sofia is here. Mama Sofia can also help with other problems, like removing bad luck, bringing back lost lovers, looking for a job, court cases, family problems, unfinished jobs by other doctors. Pay after success 100% guaranteed. Come see miracles. CALL/ WHATSAAP 063 448 3633

HE draw for the 7th annual PMB High Schools Football Association Cup was held last Friday at Carter High School. A record number of 32 schools are participating in the tournament, which takes place at Carter High on 27 and 28 August. “When we started this tournament in 2010, the aim was to provide a tournament for high schools in the greater PMB area, being inclusive as possible, but also insisting that the best possible standards are maintained to ensure an enjoyable tournament firstly for the players, the schools and the sponsors. “Too often, football accepts second-best standards but we’ve shown this doesn’t have to be the case. Each year the tournament has grown in stature and we are pleased this year to have 18 boys schools and 14 girls participating from as far afield as Ixopo, Richmond, Treverton, Greytown and Wartburg and just about everywhere in-between,” said tournament organiser Dan Haswell. The tournament has also provided a platform for many talented footballers to be scouted for higher honours and many who have excelled have gone on to receive professional contracts and sport bursaries at tertiary institutions. One such player is former Maritzburg College pupil Ryan Moon, who recently signed for Kaizer Chiefs. Moon still holds the tournament record of seven goals scored in 2013. The girls section, which has been dominated by Haythorne Secondary having won it three times in a row, may be more challenging this year with the likes of Edendale Technical College and Ixopo High School entering girls
