Aids helpline A number of reasons to celebrate 0800012322 MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. HE South African Democratic Teachers Union) members in the Pietermaritzburg region picketed outside the Depart- ment of Education offices along Jabu Ndlovu and Burger streets recently, calling for investigations into the alleged illegal hiring of teachers and overcrowding of classrooms, which they want investigated immediately.

Sadtu provincial secretary Dolly Caluza said that classroom overcrowding is more prevalent at schools in the townships and rural areas. “Our teachers are struggling a lot, especially when it comes to overcrowding and the dislocation of the post-provisioning norm. “In some schools you find that there are 100 pupils in one classroom and it is difficult for pupils to focus and even ask questions because the environment does not

allow for a teacher-pupil connection. “The set-up puts a lot of pressure on pupils to accept the situation. “In some schools there is no workshop that could help pupils choose their subjects carefully towards what they intend to do after matric,” said Caluza, adding that the majority of the pupils end up doing subjects that are irrelevant to their career choices. She said some of the teachers

FRUSTRATED parents of pupils at Edendale Technical High School said it was “highly unacceptable” that pupils were forced to remain at school, while it didn’t have water for a week. The school has had no water since last Monday due to the water shortage the drought has caused. However, parents said their children should have been sent home if there was no water. “My child could not go to the toilet for the entire day. She also had no water to drink and that affected her concentration,” said a concerned parent, who did not want to be named. The parent claimed the teachers and school management behaved in an “uncaring” manner toward the children by forcing them to attend classes without water and ablution facilities. “From what I understand, according to the law and basic human rights, the children should have been sent home after two hours without water,” said the parent. However, school principal Fano Ngubane said he could not suspend classes due to examinations and the fact that he did not want the school pass rate to drop. Ngubane said the responsibility fell on the parents to send their children with water bottles to school. “The water situation at our school is quite difficult and I must admit the toilets are filthy. We use water from the life scien ces pond to flush the toilets,” said Ngubane. He said he notified the municipality and the Department of Education that the school did not have water for an entire week, however, he had not received any response. “The municipality must play its role. They did not send water tanks to us. The department must also play their role and should have assisted us,” he said. Msunduzi Municipality and the department failed to respond to questions at the time of going to press.

‘Smart’ antidrug programme gets under way >> Over 80 schools were invited by programme leaders to participate in the initiative, which will mirror the Durban programme NICOLE JOHN >>news@myecho.co.za

UPILS from various schools across Pietermaritzburg and surrounds filled the city hall last week during the launch of the Anti-Drug Smart Club programme. Over 80 schools were invited by programme leaders to participate in the initiative, which will mirror the Durban programme, founded by Sam Pillay, that has been running for over 10 years. Shireen Anthony, programme co-ordinator, said the initiative has been launched in the city in order to address the various social ills that are affecting the youth. “We’ve taken the initiative to start the smart club programmes in

Pietermaritzburg and have visited 80 schools where we presented our idea. “The event [on 10 May] trained the five pupils that each school represents in order for them to go back and roll out the clubs in their schools. The clubs will be facilitated by the Msunduzi Municipality social work department staff who will visit the schools to encourage them and check on their progress,’’ she said. The smart club programme will mirror the Durban anti-drug programme founded by Pillay. “We needed to start working with pupils in their own environment and have a more long-term focus as many of them don’t understand the consequences of addiction,” he said. The smart clubs address social ills that pupils face.

“These issues need to be addressed from a young age because drugs are so prevalent in schools and are targeting younger children,” said Pillay. Pillay said it is important for children to understand what to do when they are faced with being offered drugs and they need to know how to handle the situation. “There was no programme in place for them to go to when they needed advice and this is what the smart clubs now offer them,” he said. Teachers were also present at the launch last week and were excited to find out more about the programmes. “We are here to learn and take it back to our schools in order to motivate other children to get involved in this programme,” said Nevidika Ramchandar from Woodlands Secondary. Nonhlanhla Zondi from Imbubu Primary said they are in desperate need of intervention as the drug problem involving children is of great concern. “There is so much exposure to drugs, which leads to children dropping out of school. “I hope that if children see what drugs do, and they know there is help for them, that they will stop taking drugs and focus on school,” she said. March creates awareness about drug effects >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com

T

HE SAPS cluster, the Premier’s Office, the KwaZulu-Natal Council of Churches and other organisations joined together in a march on Friday 13 May from Plessislaer to Ndumiso Stadium in Imbali. The purpose of the march was to create awareness about the effects and the consequences of substance abuse and also advise the youth, especially students, about how to avoid drugs and help their loved ones who are addicted to drugs. The march was supported by schools from around Imbali including Mehlokazulu High, Zibukezuku High, Zamazulu Secondary, Sukuma Comprehensive, Nsikayethu Comprehensive and KwaPata Secondary, to mention some. Addressing the crowd, SAPS Lieutenant General Lucas Ngobeni said every day the police arrest more than 20 people for drug-related issues, most of whom are young people.

“These people then obtain criminal records and come back complaining about how they are unemployable when they are older,” said Ngobeni. He advised the hundreds of the marching pupils to stay away from drugs and to think carefully about the choices they make, which can greatly affect their future. Premier’s Office general manager Mbongeni Mathe said: “The premier has initiated a youth directorate, aimed at youth development both socially and educationally in the province. Our wish is to help develop the youth of KwaZulu-Natal, but we cannot do that if they are drug addicts.” The Department of Correctional Services, Department of Community Safety, Department of Sports and Recreation and the Hawks also expressed their concern about substance abuse and vowed to help in any way they can to minimise the number of people using drugs. Golide Ndlela of the South Africa National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence also spoke on behalf of the organisation saying

THE driver of the bakkie that crashed and killed eight children last year has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of culpable homicide. The 32yearold Lungile Princess Mthimkulu made another brief appearance in the regional court on Friday, dressed in a red skirt and red jersey. She pleaded not guilty to eight counts of culpable homicide, as well as to the alternative charge of reckless and negligent driving, or driving without consideration for other road users. Mthimkulu was allegedly transporting over 20 Fezokhule Primary School pupils aged seven to 11 on 29 January, 2015 when her bakkie crashed into a house in Imbali, killing eight children Snakhonke Mchunu (8), Owami Mahlaba (10), Sinenhlanhla Nkomo (8), Akhona Shezi (9), Sinethemba Chonco (7) Snenhlanhla Dlamini (7) Olwethu Vilakazi (9), and Nonzuzo Zuma (11). Mthimkulu admitted on Friday to driving the bakkie at the time of the accident, but denied respon sibility for the accident due to “unforeseen mechanical failure of the braking system”. Advocate Shane Matthews, leading the defence for Mthimkulu, asked for the matter to be adjourned as they had hired a private investigator. The case was then adjourned to 13 July.

DURBAN University of Technology (Dut) second year students from the Department of Ecotourism Management will host their second annual Roots of Success Awards on Thursday, 19 May, at the Durban University of Technology Riverside Campus main hall at 10am. The event will be staged to honour ecotourism students who have done well in their studies. Second-year student, Kholiwe Dlamini, said second-year, third-year and B.Tech students will be acknowledged. “Ecotourism second-year students started hosting the awards last year as a way of honouring students that do well. This was gladly supported by the ecotourism department and the Durban University of Technology management,” said Dlamini. She said the awards include ubuntu, industrial and the cultivated award. “For the cultivated and industrial awards ecotourism students get to vote for the people whom they think deserve the awards. Ubuntu award is given to a student who behaves well around people, respects themselves and other people and is basically a people’s person,” said Dlamini. She said that approximately 300 students from the faculty are expected to attend the event.

Voting is a civic duty AS the local government elections approach rapidly, we must reflect on the importance of voting. Exercising your right to vote strengthens South Africa’s democracy. Voting is not only a right, but a civic duty. Many have chosen to remove themselves from the electoral process for various reasons, from pessimism to a sense of hopelessness with the government. Every South African who holds the right to vote plays a role in determining our country’s future. Young people especially must engage with our democracy by making their voices heard through the electoral process. Voting in the election is a reflection of our commitment to our communities and country. Municipalities are weighed down by unemployment, poverty and service-delivery challenges. Now more than ever before, South Africa requires responsible participatory citizens to help resolve these challenges. Your vote will elect public representatives in your area. Many people underestimate the importance of local government, but it is the sector of government closest to the people. Public representatives elected through your votes have tremendous influence to improve communities. The ANC has failed Msunduzi repeatedly. It is essential to save our city from another failure. The DA has proved itself where it governs, and will deliver far more given the opportunity. Voters are implored to vote for change, vote for the DA where evidence of people-centred local government exists. MELIKA SINGH Pietermaritzburg

History will judge them harshly I AM happy that the #Zumamustfall campaign is failing to get off the ground. It was clear from the word go that the campaign would not be successful because it is led by the people who harbour a terrible hatred for President Jacob Zuma. Their march on Freedom Day in Durban was a spectacular failure. We were told that thousands would be marching, but fewer than 200 people participated. It is evident that people have realised that Zuma is being persecuted. Zuma has been under fire since he became president. The Nkandla constitutional verdict gave his opponents ammunition to call for him to step down. They have been relentless in their efforts to tarnish his image. They fail to understand that Zuma was elected by more than 62% of the population and only those who voted for him have the power to remove him. The courts must not allow themselves to be used by Zuma’s opponents to fight political battles. Zuma will finish his term. He cannot be intimidated by people who know nothing about struggle in this country. Zuma’s struggle credentials are unparalleled. He fought against the apartheid regime and as a result was jailed for 10 years. We enjoy freedom these days because of Zuma’s sacrifices and those of other freedom fighters. It is unbelievable that some people have such short memories, that they despise people who freed us. My message to those rogue elements society is that they can continue with these wrong tendencies, but history will judge them harshly. ROMANIUS ZULU Via email

Well done SAPS Mountain Rise MUCH criticism is often levelled at members of the Mountain Rise SAPS. My recent visit to inquire about someone who was apparently arrested, proved otherwise. At the front desk I was confronted by a well dressed, wellmannered, Constable P. E. Dlamini, who, without hesitation, informed me of the charges and the procedures to follow to secure the person’s release. He referred me to Warrant Officer G. R. Naidoo, the arresting officer. Naidoo, equally pleasant, reiterated the procedure. The “backtobasics” adopted by National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane appears to be bearing some fruit. Bravo, SAPS Mountain Rise. LOGAN GOVENDER Pietermaritzburg

‘To hell with the citizens’ I

HAVE noticed that the Msunduzi Municipality is painting the new parking bays in Raisethorpe at a vigorous pace, but the road markings that are faded are not given priority. Well, I suppose that the safety of our motorists is unimportant if there is money to be made from charging for parking. Pleas by the business community for council to stop this money-making scheme which will negatively affect their trade have fallen on deaf ears. In previous reports, the municipality stated that this strategy is essential to its traffic management policy. This is hogwash - our people are not so naive to believe you. This is a joint business venture with your profiteering part-

ner. The ultimate goal is just to make money and your attitude is to hell with the citizens and how it affects their pockets and their lives. Very simply, you are using financially struggling people as your cash cow without any conscience whatsoever. It is absolutely ridiculous to charge for parking at the Raisethorpe mosque where worshippers come to offer their prayers. Furthermore, no consideration has been given to the parents who drive to the Raisethorpe Secondary School and Maritzburg Muslim School for Girls to leave and fetch their children. As a result of the parking bays, Dr Chota Motala Road has been narrowed to one lane in some places which is already impacting on the smooth flow of traffic.

Raise thorpe park ing bays painted at a vigorous pace We are living in tough economic times and need to save every cent. I suggest we make use of free parking in adjacent streets and walk to the shops. Make use of free parking at Sadtu Square in Lahore Road (I hope and pray that council does not start charging there too) and use of offroad parking available in front of some businesses. Walking is good exercise and you will be able to meet and greet old friends. This is not traffic management, just another ploy to fill the city’s coffers and to impoverish its already overburdened citizens. DENNIS MOODLEY Pietermaritzburg

‘Promotion long overdue’ CONGRATULATIONS to Brigadier Pregasen “Boxer” Pillay on your appointment as station commander and your promotion. This promotion was long overdue. Each time the station head left, you acted in the position and carried the station forward. I had the privilege of working with you when I was a reservist, and you would always be at the front, posting officers, checking on them and making sure everyone was accounted for and safe after an operation. You have put your heart and soul into Mountain Rise Police Station and the community it serves. To the person or people responsible for appointing you to this position, thank you. You have chosen the right person. VERNON GENGAN Pietermaritzburg

ECHO ‘A lot of upcoming artists will get expo sure and this might drive South African artists to produce more quality music.’

‘I support the SABC’s decision because this means more money in the bank for South African art ists. However, playing South African music most of the time will becomebor ing because radio sta tions will more than likely have to repeat SA music.’

ECHO reporter NJABULO CELE asked people what they thought about the SABC’s decision to play 90% SA music and 10% international music.

Unathi Thusi: ‘I don’t like South African music because artists copy interna tional music styles in stead of creating their own. However, playing a lot of South African music will drive the industry to get profes sional and cutting edge re cording studios.’

Patience Nyandoro ‘The decision by the SABC does not make sense because there are many peo ple who love international music. South African artists should stop copying Ameri can music styles and have their own style.’

‘I don’t listen to South African radio stations, but I think this will be a challenge for South African artists to constantly produce good music.’

Congratulations on promotion, brigadier I WOULD like to take this opportunity to congratulate Colonel P. Pillay on his promotion to the rank of brigadier. Pillay served in Pietermaritzburg for many years, particularly at SAPS Mountain Rise. He is an experienced and capable officer, most conversant

with policing. We worked together at the Prestbury and Mountain Rise police stations. I wish you everything of the best in your appointment, brigadier. Continue to protect and serve, as you have always done. LOGAN GOVENDER Pietermaritzburg

Arms procurement four years’ labour and nothing to show for it AFTER four years, and many man hours, not to speak of millions to the staff preparing the report on the country’s arms procurement, the conclusion is one which is no surprise - a complete exoneration of those involved in the deals - and a much anticipated report that would eventually clear the president’s men comes to an end. Well prepared, it was surely going to put paid to all the rumourmongering about the state’s impropriety when the arms were purchased, the commission

conclusion was a sorry state of affairs aiding and abetting the many who benefited from the lucrative contracts. South Africa, now in a total non-warring situation, did not need those armaments. The money spent there could have been channelled to better usage. What better way to divert state resources in a “legitimate” deal, as well as enjoying massive kickbacks from the arms suppliers. A.R. Awardwinning man releases poetry ebook SOUTH African hiphop awardwin ning rapper, author and former columnist Brian Khoza is using his passion for writing to fight against gender violence. The collection of love poems he wrote to love interests over a decade ago will only be available on the internet and is called Smiling After Lost Love (Poems from my teens and early Twenties). The book, due out on Khoza’s birthday, 19 May comes with a spe cial request a #SmilingAfter campaign. People can post on social networks about ways to heal after disappointment, heartbreak and other relationshiprelated issues, but leave room for #SmilingAfter. Seeing the destruction and vio lence that happens when couples break up or relationships that go wrong Khoza decided to dedicate much of his work to changing mindsets using rap, writing, Tweet ing and public speaking. He said he feels that knowing somebody was heartbroken and disrespected in a relationship and then finds love later can help. The foreword was written by Julie Smith from Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action. The book can now be download ed from https://gumroad.com/ briandotkhoza Visit, add email address and get it before. Supplied.

HEZILE Thusini, also known by her stage name - “P Elle”- is a talented young lady who produces her own music and is a song writer specialising in R&B and Neo soul. “I was discovered on Facebook by my manager Sbusiso Jaca where I was doing a cover song, called Hart by Cristina William.” She was later signed under Dark Voyage Records, a recording label based in Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg. Thusini has just released a single called Superwoman. “Looking at my mother and sisters I see that women lack confidence and self-empowerment. To feel more confident and fill the void women tend to get more material things to look beautiful. The way we express ourselves is not bold enough. “My music is influenced by all women, especially those who are in distress and who do drugs and alcohol because what they are doing is negative and my music tries to change their mindset so

they do and think positively about themselves,” said Thusini. She said her music is also influenced by South African artist Bucie and the dance and world of art. Thusini knew she wanted to be successful in the music industry when she was in Grade 3. At the age of seven she started singing at a church choir. “Fame is not important to me, in fact I don’t care if I become famous,” she said. She said her dreams include having her own record label because she knows how to produce her songs. Her music can be downloaded on iTunes. For more information on her projects she urged Pietermaritzburg residents to like her Facebook page Phezile Luyanda Thusini (P Elle). Thusini is working on an EP that will have four to six songs, and is expected to be released in month. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

SA’s top dogs to compete in agility and jumping championship at Royal Show A WIDE range of dog breeds and their handlers will be competing over two days at the Royal Show this year, in a quest to be named 2016 Wuma KZN Agility and Dog Jumping champions. Spectators can expect to see the ever-popular Border Collies showing off their skills, as well as Australian Shepherds, Poodles, German Shepherds,

Schnauzers, Shelties, Kelpies, Chinese Crested and Havanese dogs. A number of dogs that have qualified for the national South African Agility Championships will also be a part of this KwaZulu-Natal championship. The agility competition is designed to demonstrate a dog’s willingness to

work with its handler, as well as show its nimble nature and versatility over a challenging course of obstacles. It is an athletic event for both handler and dog that requires conditioning, concentration, training and most importantly, teamwork. The handler’s influence is limited to voice, movements and body lan-

guage, while the dog runs off-leash without any food or toys as motivation. Handlers and dogs at the Royal Show this year will be competing for top honours in all three disciplines contact agility, non-contact agility and dog jumping - and each discipline caters for three different sizes of dogs. The courses are complicated and it is not possible for the dog to complete them without human guidance. This year’s provincial agility and dog jumping championships at the Royal Show are on Friday, 3 June and Saturday 4 June. - Supplied. Walk for teenage pregnancy awareness on Saturday THE Source of Hope Youth Foundation (SOHYF) and RivLife International, two NGOs in Ward 34, are collaborating in an event to raises awareness around the issue of teen pregnancy. KwaZulu-Natal has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the country and the problem seems to be growing, unabated. Studies have also shown that the prevalence is much higher in poorer communities.

To highlight the issue an awareness walk is being planned for 21 May starting at 9am at the Eastwood Library. The walk will go through parts of Eastwood and Cinderella Park and finish at the RivLife Community Centre in Cinderella section A where a formal presentation will take place. The community is asked to join in the march. – Supplied.

There was also a drag queen performance, which included song and dance pieces.

After the entertainment there was a question and answer session in which serious issues concerning the LGBTI community and their family members were discussed. This event was just one of many to be held by The Gay & Lesbian Network in the lead up to their annual Pink Mynah Festival, which will be held in October. The Pink Mynah Arts & Film Festival will be held on 27 October, the Pink Mynah Pageant on 28 October and the Pink Mynah Street Parade on 29 October. Three U19 Carter High School pupils (from left) Ntsika Mjoli, Ndumiso Makhathini and Siyanda Buthelezi, were selected at the Voortrekker Night Series this year to participate in the Interna tional Dubai 7s Rugby Tournament taking place at the end of the year. The boys said they are ecstatic about the trip and that it is a dream come true. The boys believe this opportunity will not only benefit them, but encourage other pupils to give their best and proudly raise the flag of Carter High School. Each boy needs to raise approximately R35 000 for the Dubai tour. To sponsor or donate in any way, contact Lisa Ellis, marketing manager at 033 345 1922, or for more information.

Carter High’s Ntsika Mjoli is a star performer in rugby, hockey and football, and has earned provincial colours in hockey and football.

060 795 7510 Whatsapp

BRAD MORGAN CARTER High’s reigning Sportsman of the Year Ntsika Mjoli is small of stature, but big on performance and extremely versatile - excelling in hockey, football and Sevens rugby. Dedication, he said, is key to his success. “It’s all dedication. Sometimes the sports clash, but I manage. At times, I have to practise hockey at the same time there is rugby and soccer, and I have to study too. I just dedicate myself. “Given a chance to practise, I make sure I practise well and put in hard work. Given the

chance to study, I have to study.” It does, of course, require the teachers at Carter to accommodate Ntsika and they help him make it all work. Somewhat surprisingly, he admitted to not particularly enjoying captaincy on the field, but his performances make him a leader nonetheless. Ntsika’s love for sport began when he was at Ixopo Primary School, which is where he was first selected for KZN Inland hockey, making the U12 provincial team. His success, he said, was “all about the support of my parents”. Hockey is his first love and remains his greatest passion, Ntsika added. It was only in Grade 7 that he began playing football, and in Grade 9 he began rugby. Whatever he turned his hand to he excelled in that sport. While he plays left link in hockey, his position in football is quite different - left-back. Ntsika explained that when he arrived at Carter in Grade 9, he wanted to play for the first XI football team, but because there was lots of competition at left-wing (where he had previously played), he decided to instead try out at left-back. Soon he had adapted to the position and was excelling. Ntsika has represented KZN Inland in hockey at U12, U14, U16 and U18B level. In football, he won KZN colours for two years in succession in the U14 ranks, then followed that up with selection for the provincial team at U15 and U16 level. Trials for the KZN U18 football team will be held later in the year. His skill in Sevens rugby was also recognised during the KFC Voortrekker Night Series, which led to him being invited to be part of an U19 Invitational Sevens Rugby Tour to Dubai. His hero in rugby, he said, is Quade Cooper. It’s all about the stepping and passing skills, Ntsika said. Real Madrid left-back Marcelo is his favourite footballer. His favourite hockey player was a little less clear. The player’s name is Brian, he thought, but he had watched him on YouTube and enjoyed his game. Ntsika has applied for scholarships to college in the U.S., through rugby and football. “Hockey is not ideal [for getting a scholarship],” he admitted. He has also applied to the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand, with Tuks and their renowned sporting set-up his number one choice.

Russian twins to miss 2016 Comrades JERRY BARNES AT first it sounded like an April Fool’s joke, but it is official, the Russian twins, Elena and Olesya Nurgalieva, won’t be running this year’s Comrades Marathon. Speaking to Echo this week, Olesya said they were disappointed and devastated about not being able to take part in the Pietermaritzburg to Durban ultramarathon. She feels it is unfair for the world athletics governing body, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), to suspend athletes from Russia and blamed politics for this. “I think it’s politics that is taking place around the world. Many years ago there used to be weapons and differen ces to fight battles, but now are using sport. We are all heartbroken because by suspending Russia means about 4 000 athletes from our country are affected,

ARITZBURG United spin doctor Brian Zuma this week told Echo and assured Pietermaritzburg soccer lovers that the Team of Choice is not going to be relegated. However, he was reminded it was Maritzburg United’s last game and might be the final game in the elite league for them. Zuma said his bosses, players and technical bench were not thinking about relegation or play-offs. “We are not entertaining those thoughts. Maritzburg United is not going down, won’t be relegated or be involved in play-offs. Mark my words, this team will be still in the PSL next season,” said Zuma. PSL fixtures will be wrapped up on Saturday and will be played at the same time. Mamelodi Sundowns are

already the confirmed league champions and their trophy and medals will be given to them on Saturday. The Team of Choice will be travelling to Olen Park Stadium in the North West to play against Jomo Cosmos, which means life or death for both teams. Zuma said United’s players are ready for the clash and are prepared to sweat blood and die with their boots on. Zuma said their game against Ezenkosi won’t be easy and is expected to be brutal. “We are expecting a tough and physical encounter. Jomo Sono has said there’s going be a lot of tackles, whatever that means is anyone’s guess. So it’s to be hard tackles versus precision. We’re not scared and are hungry for this win,” said Zuma. A win for United means they will be cleared from relegation and play-offs. .

unfortunately we are on the same list. It is really unfair,” she said. She said however, they will take the Russian suspension bravely. “For a long time, our lives has been about coming to South African and running Comrades. We take it as a holiday this time around, and Russia is a beautiful country and there are lots of other races we can run here. We are also spending time with our parents and doing a bit of farming. “We are going to miss South Africa and the interesting route between Maritzburg and Durban. We made a lot of friends there and we love South Africa and people just love us. Please tell them we love them.” The sisters hope to be back next year. Comrades is on 29 May, starting at 5am from Pietermaritzburg’s City Hall. The Russian situation was confirmed some months ago, when the Interna tional Association of Athletics Federa tions provisionally suspended the AllRussia Athletic Federation (ARAF) as an IAAF member with immediate effect. The decision was taken during the 201st IAAF council meeting which was held by teleconference and chaired from London by IAAF president, Sebas tian Coe. A total of 24 council members took part in the meeting 22 voted in favour of the sanction against ARAF, one voted against and the Russian council member was not eligible to vote.
