MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Pupils sent home over R20 farewell party payment >> ‘As a [education] department we condemn this in the strongest possible terms’ NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com

BOUT 50 Siyahlomula High School pupils in Ashdown were sent home last Tuesday after they failed to pay R20, which the school apparently requested from each pupil for a farewell party for a teacher. According to the pupils the farewell party is due to take place today at the school. The suspended pupils are
believed to be from two Grade 11 classes. One of the pupils, who did not their name divulged for fear of victimisation by teachers, said what the school did was against the Constitution. “We are children, we are pupils and we do not have money. Most of our parents are not working and they do not have money. I asked my mother if she could give me R20 and she said she did not have money. I hardly carry lunch money to school,
not even R1, but the school expected each pupil to pay R20 for a farewell party. “Two teachers came to our class and said that by not paying means we do not appreciate what the school does for us. However, we are now back at school - it’s as though nothing ever happened. “We missed out on classes because of them. Half of the pupils in my class did not pay,” said the distraught pupil. KwaZulu-Natal Department of
Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said that they are against pupils being forced to pay and said they will investigate the situation at Siyahlomula High School to get to the bottom of it. “As a department we condemn this in the strongest possible terms, It is totally against policy to force pupils to pay, even worse for a farewell party for a teacher. “We are going to ask the district to investigate this and take appropriate action,” he said.

SOME of the street children who were offered shelter at Havelock Road have absconded and are now back on the streets. Last year the Msunduzi Municipality and Business Fighting Crime jointly removed people living in the street by Upper Crust bakery and Jonathan Spar after a call from the Office of the Premier and the ANC national office. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said those who ran away are rebellious and did not obey the house rules. “We have basic rules at the shelter and some youths do not want to live in a place where there are rules - street life gives them complete freedom from responsibility. “Those on the streets are mainly from the beer hall, but we also have a group who are unco-operative and beg or do ‘bit’ jobs to keep their habit going. They are adults so we cannot force them to do anything.” Madonda said it is not all doom and gloom however, as some tenants abide by the rules. “We are patient and persistent and some of them gradually move into the co-operative group. Some become increasingly disruptive and Debbie Harrison [project manager] is then obliged to issue warnings and then expel them. She then informs the city security that they are not welcome back at the shelter and should be arrested if found begging on the streets as per the by-laws. The shelter provides a second chance to get one’s life back on track, but we do expel people for criminal activities or anti-social behaviour, which impact on the others.” “There are between 22 and 36 youths in the shelter, one social worker and two interns responsible for counselling. We have eight people doing a free computer course. “We have a core of youth that are coherent and co-operative. We are liaising with NGOs such as Mental Health and South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence to get support. “The social workers go onto the streets from time to time to speak to the youth there,” said Madonda.

THEMBENI Memorial Park in Lincoln Mead is in ruins following its ownership by the Msunduzi Municipality three years ago. This inconveniences and irritates Pietermaritzburg residents who want to apply for tombstones to be erected on their loved one’s graves because they have no one to help them on-site. Maritzburg Echo reporter recently visited Ethembeni Memorial Park and found that the offices have been abandoned and there was no sign of an employee to explain the situation and why the area has turned to a ghost town. In one of the offices books and papers were strewn across the floor and in the other doors were simply locked to keep intruders out. There was no sign of a security on site and the place is vulnerable to vandalism and theft. One of the affected residents is Nomusa Xulu, who recently took five weeks off from work so she could buy tombstones for her loved ones. “For weeks I have been sent from pillar to post, but no one knows who to speak to when one requires a tombstone permit at Ethembeni Memorial Park. The officials know nothing, nor do they know who is responsible for giving out permits. One of them told me that three years ago the Msunduzi Municipality bought Ethembeni Memorial Park but when I went to the offices in Lincoln Mead there was no one on site. The place is like a ghost town. You are even scared to go there on your own because there might be thugs living there,” said Xulu. She has since resumed her duties at work without getting help. In one of the municipality’s Executive Committee meetings last October, it emerged that the Msunduzi Municipality aimed to acquire 10 hectares for burial space at Ethembeni Memorial Park. The suspended municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi was quoted as saying that the land at Ethembeni will be acquired using funds that were given to the municipality by the Department of Human Settlements. “In view of the shortage of burial space we are recommending that the economic development business unit engage with the Department of Human Settlements requesting permission to allow the Msunduzi Municipality to utilise 10 hectares for burial space at Ethembeni Memorial Park, which already has an approved environmental authorisation,” he said. Two weeks ago Maritzburg Echo approached the Msunduzi Municipality seeking clarity on the situation at Ethembeni Memorial Park. At the time of print the municipality had failed to respond.

LOVE of words and education is the one gift that South Africa can offer her children in a fast changing world. Through words we can raise confident children with the power to dream, create, break boundaries and explore the world. The idea that we can turn the tide on the educational crisis is not a mere pipe cream but a reality as thousands of children around Africa take the challenge to prove their ability and talent to spell. Thousands of pupils aged between nine and 14 are taking part in the Mzansi Spelling Bee and proving that all is not lost with education in South Africa. The 2015 Mzansi Spelling Bee Junior champion, eight-year-old Mayuri Govender proved that if you are determined you can break boundaries and do whatever you set your mind to. The Kimberley native is homeschooled by her mother and won the 2015 Mzansi Spelling Bee, making her the youngest speller and the youngest winner of the national spelling bee. In May she will be meeting with the Queen of England, and publishing her first book. Kate Jones (14), won the 2012 and 2013 Mzansi Spelling Bee final, proving that size does not count if you believe in yourself. Mzansi Spelling Bee spellers demonstrate that their history and background does not have to define them. Mxolisi Magwaza calls the crowed Johannesburg inner city “home”, but his faith and the support of his grandmother gave him the courage to

Political heavyweights and king thank Gift of the Givers and partners JERRY BARNES POLITICAL heavyweights from organisations around KwaZulu-Natal have thanked Gift of the Givers and other partners for working around the clock to distribute water, food parcels, detergent and personal hygienic packs. Gift of the Givers team and volunteers, led by operations manager Sallim Sayed, have been travelling to various areas of KwaZulu-Natal distributing millions of litres of water and other items to assist communities badly affected by the ongoing drought. Sayed said most of the areas affected by the drought are around Zululand. “We are most busy in Mpangeni, Richards Bay, Eshowe, Hluhluwe, Nongoma, Vryheid and outlying municipalities. The conditions are shocking and to see dams and rivers
almost running dry made all of us emotional and we realised the drought is real and is disastrous. “This is also a huge lesson for all of us [we need to realise] that water is precious and we need to take care of nature and save water.” Sayed says Gift of the Givers’ drought relief campaign is unlikely to end soon and appealed to people, companies and municipalities to join hands with his organisation and help affected communities. “Unfortunately, the majority of KZN is badly hit by drought and there is no rain. Our prayers are directed at seeing good rain coming down. The situation is bad, and we are not too sure when we will stop our the drought campaign.” Recently Sayed’s staff visited affected areas under uThungulu District Municipality to offer assistance and was joined by Edendale-born, former Laduma High

The king of the Zulus said there are no perfect or suitable words good enough to thank the work tirelessly done by the organisation around the country, especially in KZN. “As king I’m involved with a lot of community projects and this organisation is always on board and available to help. Their drought relief campaign that started late last has been outstanding, pure class and out of this world.Maybe I don’t have perfect words to describe work done by the Gift of the Givers around the country and especially in my land.” Companies communities, business sectors and municipalities who wish to join hands in the drought campaign can contact Sayed on 083 651 2006 or call in at Gift of the Givers warehouse at 31 Willowton Road.

HREE Sobantu Secondary School pupils left for Dubai on Friday with Pietermaritzburg Save Hyper making an impossible dream come true. Last year, the three pupils were selected to participate in the final stages of a United Nations research competition on sustainable cities. The school was the only South African school selected. The pupils, Fezeka Bhengu, Nokubonga Xaba and Thobeka Shange, entered an essay on how Msunduzi could be sustained by using methane gas from municipal dumps to generate electricity for the city. However, the excitement of their selection as finalists was short-lived when it was discovered that the next round of the competition would be in Dubai, and required the school to fund the trip. Save Hyper came on board in and saved the day, announcing they would fund the entire trip for the three pupils and their English teacher, Thandeka Sibiya, who supervised the pupils’ entry and research for the competition, would also make the trip. On Friday evening, the pupils and their teacher left for Dubai, landing safely on Saturday morning. Save Hyper regional manager Garth Lloyd said the group was excited to see the pupils off. “It was a dream for them and we are all thrilled about their achievements.” “We think they have a lot of potential and are having a good time.” He said a colleague had sent them a message yesterday morning, with Sibiya responding that they were enjoying themselves. The pupils and Sibiya will be arriving back in Durban on Friday evening.

Municipality tackles illegal boarding houses WITH Pietermaritzburg being the centre of education facilities, more illegal boarding houses are being discovered by the Msunduzi Municipality every day. Municipal spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said that most of the illegal boarding houses are in Scottsville, Northdale and the city centre, saying that Scottsville is the worst culprit. The illegal boarding houses function without permits and target pupils who come from out of town especially those who come from the Eastern Cape. “Most of the illegal land uses are boarding houses. However, we do not have exact figures,” said Madonda. She said that not only is there a shortage of student accommodation, but the city faces a shortage of accommodation in general. “The Town Planning Scheme has recently been ex tended to Edendale, Imbali and Soban tu. This therefore means that the mu nicipality will also tackle illegal land use in these areas.” She further stated that proper channels must be followed should one transform their house into a boarding house. “Depending on the zoning of the property, it [registration] can be done through rezoning or special consent. Buildings must have approved building plans and also comply with development controls as set out on the town planning scheme. It must be noted that town planning enforcement deals with uses of properties,” she said. However, she said that a house will not be regarded an illegal boarding house if the owner of the house is letting one room or whole house to one person or one family.

Election posters to remain MEC T
HE election posters bearing the face of MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube are going nowhere. This was the stern retort given by the MEC on Friday during the debate on the department’s budget speech. The posters have caused an outcry with people saying the colours on them match those of ANC while others have described them as a waste of public funds. The EFF’s Vukani Ndlovu said someone needed to remind Dube-Ncube that “she is not a beauty queen”. However, Dube-Ncube said the posters were a vital communication tool and the department will continue using them. — WR.

Possible 17c to 18c petrol price increase in May EDWARD WEST A GRADUAL, but sustained strength in petroleum prices may result in a 17c to 18c per litre increase in the price of petrol next month, the Automobile Association (AA) said on Monday. The AA, commenting on unaudited mid-month data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF), said on Monday that on the international market, diesel and petrol prices
have risen since late February. The appreciation of the rand against the U.S. dollar had gone some way to offset this. This meant that local diesel and illuminating paraffin prices might decline at month end, while petrol was set to climb. Diesel and illuminating paraffin prices could drop 11c to 12c per litre. “The exchange rate, and international oil prices, continue to be volatile, and the month-end picture could be quite different from the current one,” the AA said. Tumbling world oil prices caused
world markets to slip and the rand to weaken yesterday. By mid-morning the price of North Sea Brent oil had dropped more than four percent to $41,38 (R602) a barrel after major oil producers in the Middle East failed to agree over the weekend on a plan to curb the global oil supply glut. The rand initially fell more than one percent to R14,75 to the dollar in line with the tumbling oil price, but recovered those losses to trade at R14,61 per dollar by mid-morning. The JSE followed world markets lower, but the losses were moderate.
‘Future is not clear for blacks’ CAPE TOWN — More coloured and black youth in South Africa are unemployed, involved in crime, and uneducated, than other race groups, statistician-general Dr Pali Lehohla said yesterday. “For Indians and whites, the future is very clear. For coloured and black youth, it’s not. It takes twice the effort for a black or coloured child qualified from the same university to be employed,” Lehohla said. He was speaking at the release of a report highlighting some of the difficulties the country’s youth faced. Lehohla said two-thirds of those unemployed in South Africa in 2014 were young people. White, Indian, or Asian youths were more likely to complete Grade 12 than their black and coloured counterparts. Black and coloured youths were also less likely to finish
university. And unemployment was strongly linked to education. “The number of blacks and coloured youths that go to university has increased, dramatically so. The problem is that they don’t complete, like their counterparts who are white. They are confronted by a number of challenges,” he said. This meant the proportion of white people getting skilled employment was higher in all age categories. According to the report, in 2014, about two million employed people in the country were classified as entrepreneurs. A total of 543 000 of them were from the youth sector. The number of young female entrepreneurs dropped 6,2 percentage points, and the number of male entrepreneurs by less than a percentage point between 2009 and 2014. - News24.
Guidelines for Face of KZN contestants NQOBILE MTOLO >> nqobile.mtolo@media24.com ASPIRING models who want to enter the Face of KZN model search contest must be South Africans aged between 18 and 35, must not be engaged, married or pregnant, and must be at school, college or university and be willing to do voluntary work. To some these may be strict rules, but the organiser and founder of the Face of KZN Model Search Bengs Nkosi said they simply adhere to international modelling standards of Miss South Africa and Miss World. “We want to develop the youth and teach them that they can do something on their own. They don’t have to be married to be champions of their dreams. “The two winners of the model search contest will be ambassadors for the youth in KZN and it would not make sense to have someone who is pregnant to motivate the youth.
“The ambassadors will have a year packed with responsibilities as they will be travelling to different parts of KZN. They will be visiting youth centres and motivating them to stay away from social ills as these hinder them from achieving their dreams. “It is important for the aspiring contestants and winners to be well disciplined. It goes without saying that their visits involve a lot of money and planning,” explained Nkosi. The closing date for entries is 30 June and the main event will take place on 3 September at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. Those who would like to enter need to send their name, surname, age, cellphone number, waist size, height measurements, shoe size eye colour, hair colour and three recent head and shoulder photos, full length photos and photos showing them wearing swimwear via Whats- App to 073 356 3737. >> Residents call on ward councillor to step down due to lack of service delivery in the area
Protesters besiege Copesville, block roads
KAILENE PILLAY
C
OPESVILLE was under siege on Monday when almost 5 000 angry protesters from formal and informal homes blocked all roads leading to and from the area, and burnt their ward councillor’s office. Crowds had gathered since early Monday morning, calling on councillor Thandi Ndlovu to step down. The protesters claimed the area has been “left in the lurch” and no service delivery has taken place there since Ndlovu became councillor in the last local government election. Burning tyres, debris, broken bottles and metal road barriers were used to barricade the New Greytown Road up to the Bob Mattison informal settlement, the Brixham Road Extension and Copesville Drive. It is believed protesters began barricading roads, with some allegedly stoning passing vehicles, from 3 am. Police swooped in on the area early yesterday morning and attempted to disperse the crowd in lower New Greytown Road using tear gas and rubber bullets. However, as officers entered the main road in Copesville, the larger group of protesters had gathered and police could not fire tear gas or rubber bullets as there were children among them. Some of the protesters said they had gathered to “get the attention of the council and the district” by telling them their woes. “We are not doing this to fight with anyone. We just want someone to hear our screams and cries. We want someone to help us,” said Sanele Mkhize. Another protester, Ayanda Ngcobo, said Ndlovu made promises she never delivered. “We don’t want her here anymore.” Ngcobo said groups of people from Swapo, Haniville, KwaShoti and Copesville were coming together for the first time. “There are no taxis operating in our area, which means we have to walk to another bus stop. While we do that, there are no street lights, but there is really long grass that criminals hide in,” said Ngcobo. He said he had written a number of letters about their plight to the Msunduzi and uMgungundlovu District municipalities, but there had been no response. “We want the ANC to come here and take her [Ndlovu] away. We want the municipality to come and see how we are living, and we want another councillor to be appointed in the meantime,” he added. Joyce Naidoo, of Satinspar Drive in Copesville, said Ndlovu “picks and chooses” who to assist, and the Indian community is usually left stranded without assistance. “We receive no help from her when it comes to applying for our grants or anything else we need to address in the area. There are so many problems and now we realise that the entire community, including people in the informal settlements, is suffering. That is why we want her out,” said Naidoo. Another resident, who asked not to be named, said Ndlovu had “abandoned” the community and did not hold meetings to provide feedback. “She refuses to give out the hall keys if people want to hold meetings to discuss issues of crime, which is rife in the area,” said the resident. Addressing the crowd on Monday, Brigadier Francis Bantham said: “You

have a right to be angry, but you relinquish that right when you block roads and burn things and put other people’s lives in danger.” She later said that police had called in back-up from Durban. Bantham said emergency services vehicles had been able to access Copesville yesterday.
Umgungundlovu North Cluster spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said the police were monitoring the situation very closely. “Two cases of public violence have been opened by the police and 19 arrests were made today,” she said. DA mayoral candidate Mergan Chetty called on the ANC and Co-

This has farreaching consequences for our city and people’s lives are at risk,” he said. Chetty added that Dube-Ncube should heed the DA’s call for her to
intervene in Msunduzi. “The MEC must come and take responsibility,” he said. Dumisani Shelembe of the EFF said they would monitor the situation to see how it unfolded. “We cannot allow the municipality not deliver to the people. Everyone should receive proper service.

CHELSEA PIETERSE STATISTICS South Africa is conducting a community survey across the country involving surveyors going door-to-door to gather information. More than 11 000 contract fieldworkers have set out across the country to collect data from 1,3 million homes. Stats SA said on their website that they had moved away from the traditional method of data collection using static maps and paper questionnaires to the Computer Assisted Personal In-

terview (Capi) methodology. The website said fieldworkers will now use Tablets to capture information on a digital questionnaire. Field staff will carry official ID cards, which include a hologram image to verify their authenticity and must be produced when visiting homes. Households will be asked questions on age, sex, migration, access to water, sanitation and housing, ownership of goods and involvement in agricultural activities. The site said the census was an information plan to
help improve quality of life and monitor progress. Stats SA call centre operator Tozama Mzunge said citizens should not be alarmed when their agents come to their door asking for personal information, about work, the number of people in the house, and so on. “If people are unsure whether they are from Stats SA, they can ask for the person’s name or ID and phone the call centre to confirm they are with us.” For queries on the community survey, call 012 310 8911.
Let law take its course about probe in financial maladministration MEC ALLOW the law to take its course. This is the only thing that MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa DubeNcube was prepared to say about the ongoing probe into financial maladministration in Msunduzi Municipality on Friday during her budget
speech. iThe department announced the probe into the municipality last month, just months after it had awarded the embattled municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi with the Municipal Manager of the Year Award after the municipality had achieved its first clean audit.
NFP member Njabulo Mlaba said the timing of the probe was suspicious. “It happened straight after the ANC provincial conference. MEC your powers must not be misused,” he said. DA member George Mari said “the ANC faction fight was making the municipality ungovernable”. — WR.
When friends and lovers leave no trace behind I MET this guy a week ago, he blew my eyes away I swear he was all a girl could ever ask for, he was my prince charming What else could a girl living the campus life ask for? I left home to further my studies, he understood I left home a virgin, he respected I left home with my parents blessings and my own set of rules, he abided
I knew to keep our hearts energised I had to always be by his side I knew to keep him perky I had to bend my rules a little The next sunrise I found myself waking in his room, on his bed and all codes broken He assured nothing went wrong, I smiled and told him how much I loved him Three weeks later, he graduated and even graduated to not picking my calls
I started feeling sick, belly grew bigger by the minute and I couldn’t visit home Why did I fall victim to every college girl’s nightmare? Lovers left, friends gone Who else can I turn to when friends and lovers of the moment leave no trace behind? MANDLA MOSIA Edendale

Police intensify drug awareness campaign at schools S
APS Victim Support members have intensified their drug awareness campaign at schools in a bid to keep drug peddlers and drug-associated crimes away from schools. Last Friday they visited Isibani High School in the CBD to educate pupils about the disadvantaged of using drug.

Prefect induction at St Nicholas NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com THE 2016 St Nicholas Diocesan School prefects were recently inducted and the foot washing ceremony was conducted by Reverend Tracy Bell at St George’s Garrison Church. St Nicholas principal Leon Grové washed the feet of the school’s newly inducted prefects, and the prefects in turn washed the feet of other pupils. “As an Anglican school we take a great deal of pride in our Christian values of faith, integrity, humility, compassion, respect discipline, courage, passion, wisdom and truth. Our foot washing ceremony, which has taken place for the last five years, is based on the Anglican Maundy Thursday Eucharist, which itself is based on Jesus’ act of washing the feet of his disciples as a sign of his humility and servant hood,” said Grové. He said that good leaders put other people first before attending to their needs. “This act symbolises our belief in servant leaders who realise that if serving is below you then leading is above you,” said Grové.
Warrant Officer Mzo Nxjmalo educates pupils about the dangers of drugs.

Humorous theatrical play at the Hexagon
Miss and Mr uShaka Marine 2016 finalists >> They will represent PMB in prestigious pageant
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
‘And the Girls in Their Sunday Dresses’ is performed by Pertunia Msani (left) and Nompilo Jili. AND the Girls in Their Sunday Dresses is a humorous story of two characters - The Woman and The Lady - one a retired prostitute fallen on hard times, the other a domestic worker waiting in line to buy subsidised government rice. The women strike up an unlikely relationship - one has a chair, the other some food.
“All we need is patience and our turn will come,” says one. As they wait to be served, they share stories of heartbreak, and find they have more in common than initially meets the eye. This production by StageFront Productions of And the Girls In Their Sunday Dresses is adapted from the short story
by Zakes Mda. It is directed by BreeH Cele, and performed by Nompilo Jili and Pertunia Msani. This modern classic will be staged at the Hexagon StudioTheatre (UKZN), from 21 to 23 April at 7pm. Tickets are R50 each at the door. For more information, contact 033 260 5537. – Supplied. PHOTO: NQOBILE MTOLO

PUMELELO Jili and Mandisa Gasa have made it to the finals for the Mr and Miss uShaka Marine 2016 beauty pageant, respectively, and will be representing Pietermaritzburg. Finals for Mr uShaka, Miss uShaka and Miss Junior 2016 will be on 30 April at uShaka Marine World at 6.30pm. Jili and Gasa are members of Intsha Yomzansi Modelling Agency. Jili who has never done modelling before said he is shocked and excited now that he is a finalist for Mr uShaka Marine 2016. He said that he can hardly wait to have fun and enjoy the experience. “I found out about the competition through Intsha Yomzansi. I was taken aback when I made it through the first phase of internal photo selections. I never thought of taking up modelling because I just never saw myself being a model. There is a first time for everything and I look forward to the experience. I am a shy person, but modelling has taught me to socialise
with other people,” said Jili. Gasa said that they are an example that anything is possible. “I am honoured to have gone this far into the competition. People should never limit themselves because there is so much they can do,” said Gasa. She has been modelling since primary school at Funulwazi Primary School. “Last year I was part of Miss Hammarsdale and also modelled a garment at the Vodacom Durban July. I am confident that I will make it. I am looking forward to winning the title,” said Gasa. Co-founder of Intsha Yomzansi Modelling Agency Thando Ace Dlamini said it is important for members to participate in competitions so that they can prepare for better things. “Local beauty pageants can only take them so far. By only concentrating on local pageants puts them in a compromising position because they end up being afraid to face the competition,” said Dlamini. Jili and Gasa urged Pietermaritzburg residents to visit the official uShaka Marine World Facebook page and vote for them.
GLN film screening this month THE Gay and Lesbian Network and My Name Is Rose NPC, will be hosting film screenings of I Am the Rose and The Rose Ministry on 27 April at the Edendale Lay Ecumanical Centre at 10am. There will also be performances by drag queens and the Rainbow Theatre Company. The is one of the many events that will be held by The Gay & Lesbian Network in the lead up to their annual Pink Mynah Festival in October. I Am the Rose is about a day filled with drama for drag queen Cebi, who finds herself locked out of her rented room, trying to find help to pay the angry landlord. Cebi then gets a lift from Themba which results in her being mistakenly accepted as a bride-to-be by Themba’s mother. Cebi spends a whole day trying to pose as the daughter-in- law, while trying not to reveal her sexual orientation to the excited mother-in-law. Starring Labelz D’Glamour, Leuta Shoalane, Tshidi Mashile and Zsa-Zsa Whitney Gabor Huston, I Am the Rose shows how drag queens
in the busy city of Johannesburg survive being assumed to be women. The Rose Ministry is a story of transwoman Smiso, who wants to have the wedding at the church as a faithful long-serving member of the church and wants the ceremony to be held by the church pastor. The homophobic pastoral family fight for this to happen despite the legal and traditional approval of the wedding. Filled with hatred and anger towards the gay church members the pastor’s wife tries everything to stop the wedding from taking place in the church and to get rid of gay church members permanently. Nicky a very close friend and a pillar to the pastor’s wife faces rejection and condemnation when the pastoral family discovers she is a ctually a transwoman. OLDEN Arrows coach Clinton Larsen has praised his players for their great performance against Orlando Pirates, despite losing 4-1 at Moses Mabhida on Saturday. A brace from in-form Tendai Ndoro followed by goals from Luvuyo Memela and Issa Sarr handed Abafana Bes’thende their 11th premiership loss of the campaign, leaving them five points shy of the top-eight finish with only five games to go before the season ends. The former Bloemfontein Celtic coach believes his team played well against the Buccaneers, considering the changes they had to make in the starting line-up ahead of the match. “It’s not often that we can say well done to our boys after losing a match by four goals to one, but that’s exactly what we said to the boys after the game,” Larsen told his club’s website. “We went into this game without Bilankulu, Cele, Mngwengwe, Arwuah, Molefe, but still managed to put on a sterling performance, thanks
largely to the efforts of some of our younger players. “Ngcobo and Hlongwani did well as did Sibiya and Sibeko coming off the bench. Our young players have brought a breath of fresh air to the club, especially during this trying period where results have not been forthcoming. We were punished by an in-form Orlando Pirates for making crucial mistakes in critical areas. All four goals conceded were a result of making four individual errors defensively. These are hard lessons for our young players to learn, but we are sure they will. We dominated the second half before and after Masalesa’s red card. We hit the upright and created several other opportunities and could easily have equalised had we taken our chances. There are many positives to take from this game as we prepare for what is our cup final against Maritzburg on Wednesday [last night].” Last night’s results were not available before going to print.

HE recent results or performance of Maritzburg United may raise eyebrows and give supporters a slim hope for survival, but their former star defender Peter Petersen believes his old team can still pull it off and surprise many. The Cape Town-born and well-travelled defender says the Team of Choice’s chances of avoiding the dreaded relegation axe are possible and real. The former Bafana Bafana player says United’s players only need to improve their fighting and winning mentality, not panic, and work as a unit. Yesterday the Team of Choice played against Golden Arrows
away at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi. At the time of going to press results were unavailable. Last Friday at home they went down 2-0 to the visitors, Mpumalanga Black Aces, which worsened any hope of survival in the elite league. Petersen says the fight is not yet over though because there are still a handful of games, and points to play for. “This is soccer my brother and the chances for Maritzburg United are still possible and alive. “In situations such as these, you don’t give up and you fight until the end of the season.” The former Moroka Swallows star right-back asks United’s players not to give up and fight
and the support from the entire Pietermaritzburg community is desperately needed,” said Petersen. United’s next league game will be on 26 April against Free State Stars at Goble Park away in Bethlehem. In March 2013 Petersen made history when he became the first player in the club’s Premiership history to reach a century of games for the club following his appearance in the 2-1 win over Black Leopards. Petersen has held the club record for the most starts, which enabled him to reach a personal milestone by being the first player to reach 100 games in the club’s short history of seven seasons in the Premier League.

tooth and nail. “They must just have big hearts, the struggle is not yet over. I believe Maritzburg United will pull it off and will still play in the PSL next season,” says Petersen. Petersen also says Ernst Middendorp is one of the best coaches in the league and must not be blamed for giving away easy games. “The coach can only do so much. It is now up to the players to raise their hands and be counted. Middendorp is doing a great job and cannot be blamed.” The retired defender also asks fans to continue going to the stadium in droves and not to give up supporting them. “This period is very critical
