She was crying and he [a man who is close to Zondi] was beating her with the handle of a pickaxe,” said the neighbour. I tried to get between them, but he would not stop. I was shouting at him to stop, but he carried on.” The neighbour said the man only stopped hitting her when he realised that Zondi had died. “I asked him why he did this but he did not say anything. “He saw she was dead and he started crying. He lay down next to her body and wept, until the police came.” The neighbour said during the four years he has known Zondi, the man often argued with Zondi and was allegedly “known to be abusive”. who was always willing to help her neighbours and others. The neighbour added that watching Zondi being beaten was an image that he cannot erase from his mind, and he is finding it difficult to cope with the violent murder of his neighbour. Zondi lived in a house with two other houses on the property. Blood stains from her murder could still be seen on the concrete stoep outside her kitchen door where her body was found. The neighbour said there was no one on the property that night besides him, Zondi and Zondi’s alleged killer, and with Zondi’s family living in Durban, there appeared to be no relatives nearby. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele said it is believed Zondi and the man had an argument before he started beating her. “The suspect severely assaulted the officer [Zondi] with the pick handle several times on the body as well as on her face,” said Mbele. “A case of murder was opened at Alexandra police station and the suspect was arrested.” The investigation has now been handed over to the Hawks in Pietermaritzburg. Plessislaer police spokesperson and Zondi’s colleague, Captain Musa Ntombela, said the station was “extremely saddened” by the loss of a colleague of such a “high calibre”. Ntombela said Zondi had worked as a sergeant at Plessislaer in the visual policing unit and had been a policewoman for over a decade. “She was always willing to help her colleagues and was very good at her job. “She was a sociable woman and her years of experience cannot be replaced. “We at Plessislaer are shocked at this loss and send our sincerest condolences to her family,” said Ntombela.

Zondi royals split over Manqele >> He was shot by police along with eight other men last Saturday SABELO NSELE

T

HE allegations surrounding the late controversial inyanga and Induna Mduduzi Manqele is threatening to split the Zondi royal family into two. The family remains divided over the issue, as two groupings have taken different stances on the issue. Family members critical of Manqele have openly defied Inkosi Nsikayezwe Manqele of Mpumuza, who is understood to have had close ties with Manqele. He was shot by police along with eight other men who police were told were on their way to bomb an ATM last Saturday night. Police found three batches of already primed commercial

explosives, four 9 mm pistols, three AK47 rifles and an R5 rifle with the nine alleged robbers. Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved family members, Dolo Zondi did not mince his words, going as far as saying Manqele had tarnished the image of the Zondi chieftaincy. However, the chief’s spokesperson Zenzinkosi Zondi said Dolo’s comments were “irresponsible”. “It is not the type of statement one would expect when Manqele’s family is still traumatised. It is also irresponsible of him to talk about an issue that is sub judice. “Whether Manqele was part of the group that was going to bomb ATMs or not, is a subject of a police investigation. So we will not talk

about it,” he said. Zenzinkosi denied that Manqele had been imposed as Induna on the people of Mafakatini. “For a very long time, the people of Mafakatini were under Induna Thandabantu Ntombela. They complained that they had to walk about 10 km to reach Ntombela’s house and suggested they get their own induna. There were quite a number of people who lobbied for Manqele to be made induna,” he said. As for a charge that Manqele called for the beheading of 18-yearold Loyiso Jokweni from France, Zenzinkosi said the courts had cleared Manqele on the charge. But Dolo stuck to his guns, saying Zenzinkosi does not speak for the

It is a known fact in Mafakatini that the community was against the imposition of Manqele as an induna. It is foreign that inkosi would impose induna and not consult the family family. “By virtue of birth, I am the rightful spokesperson of the family. I am the descendant of Inkosi Bhekizizwe (grandfather of the current inkosi).” The defiant Dolo said the family would be meeting in Hlathini today to discuss the issue of Manqele. “As the family, we cannot afford to have an induna who goes with criminals who bomb ATMs. “It is a known fact in Mafakatini that the community was against the imposition of Manqele as an induna. It is foreign that inkosi would impose induna and not consult the family,” he said.

ESPITE propositions to shut down Pietermaritzburg’s “crime den”, the eMatsheni Beer Hall in Retief Street remains fully functional. Store owners said the infamous hall is now “infested” with people they believe to be whoonga addicts. A frustrated business owner, who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation, said that his business has been suffering lately due to the increase of “whoonga smokers” and destitute people squatting in the hall. “Just last week, some of my supplies displayed outside were stolen by the whoonga addicts. to report any robberies to us,” Ngobese said. He said police constantly monitor the area via patrols as well as cameras positioned on the streets. A street vendor, who has been trading in the area for over nine years, said they live in constant fear. “I want them [drug addicts] gone. The municipality and police must group them together and go throw them far away where they cannot find their way back,” said the angry woman. “There are young girls in there, girls as young as 12 years old. They smoke whoonga and become street cats.” She suggested the Msunduzi Municipality should clear out the beer hall and rent the space to vendors. Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said the municipality’s plans to shut down the hall are still under way. “Unfortunately, we cannot just wake up and go shut the place down. It is a long process and we are following procedures,” said Mafumbatha. She said all those who fall victim to crime in the vicinity should report it to the police. “When people are mugged or attacked, it becomes a crime element and has nothing to do with the municipality. People must bear with us and report crime-related problems to the police,” she said.

Fee increase for 30% of UKZN students THE University of KwaZuluNatal is acutely aware of the financial constraints experienced by many of our students and their families. However, the longterm financial sustainability and survival of the University are also key considera tions to ensure that the UKZN can continue to serve its stakeholders appropriately into the future. Taking these issues into account, the Council of the University has approved an eight percent tuition and an eight percent residence accommodation fee increase for the 2017 academic year. The increase will be covered by NSFAS and state funding (DHET) for all students that qualify for NSFAS funding as well as those that can demonstrate a household income below R600 000 per annum. Consequently, both NSFAS and ‘missing middle’, which is below R600 000 income, will not experience any fee increases for 2017. At UKZN this means that up to 70% of students will not be required to pay increased fees. Students with a household income above R600 000 will be expected to pay the eight percent increase as determined by council. The decision to increase fees was not an easy one to make and was guided by the announcement made by Minister Blade Nzimande earlier this year and the annual surge in operational costs as well as the randdollar exchange rate. Supplied

people’s habitation. “People can feel free to call me whenever they discover a snake on their property … even if it is midnight, I do not mind,” said Barnard. Another local snake expert and snake catcher, Mark Enslin, also said he has been receiving many calls from frightened people asking him to hurry and remove “monstrous” snakes from their property. “I get about four calls per day, and sometimes people call and say there is a monster snake in their garden only to find it is only a frog or a blueheaded lizard,” laughed Enslin. On Saturday, a resident from the Ashburton area, Ingrid Harrison, had an encounter with a puff adder and called Enslin to remove the snake before it attacked her dog, Jasper. Enslin said people can keep snakes off their property by keeping their garden neat and tidy, trimming down shrubs that may be growing against windows, clearing piles of wood or rubble lying around. “Snakes come to properties for food and shelter, not to harm residents,” added Enslin. Snake sightings on ECHO the rise this summer — but remember they mean no harm NEWS

ITH summer heating up, snake season is also in full swing and local snake catchers say they have been receiving a number of callouts for various venomous snake species found in people’s homes. Recently, local snake expert and snake catcher Zane Barnard was called out to a Hilton home where he rescued a puff adder that was in the garden. Barnard said an increase in temperatures led to snakes looking for food and ending up in people’s homes. “People need to understand that snakes are afraid of people as much as people are afraid of them. They only attack when they feel threatened or agitated,” he said. He said in the past two weeks the most common venomous snake he has rescued from people’s homes were black mambas, Mozambique cobras and boomslangs, along with other non-venomous snakes. He added that the commonest areas in the Midlands for snakes are Hilton, Ashburton and Lincoln Meade. “I rescue the snakes from people’s homes and relocate them to their natural habitat away from WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A SNAKE ON YOUR PROPERTY: • Make sure your children and pets are safe. • Do not attempt to catch the snake or aggravate it as this may lead to a snake bite. • Once all the family members are safe, call an expert on the matter. • Watch the snake from a distance.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BITTEN: • Stay calm. • Try to identify the snake by sight only. Look for colour, markings and head shape. • Do not try to kill the snake; it could bite again. • Keep the patient calm and immobile (preferably lying down). • Do not use a tourniquet, do not cut the wound, do not try

to suck out the venom and do not pack the wound in ice. • Rush the injured person to hospital. Rush pets to vets. OTHER FACTS: • It is never okay to kill any sort of animal. • Stand at least four metres away from a spitting cobra when waiting for a snake catcher. — Information from ER24

ment intern but was later approached by then mayor to take up the position of an admin assistance in his office. “When that door for me to be an admin assistance opened, I was presented with many other opportunities and along the way realised my passion for promoting and marketing different brands within the municipality. I was more excited when Umgungundlovu District municipality approached me to come up with a marketing strategy for the Mandela Day marathon. That opportunity tested my capabilities and opened me up to a different space.” The charismatic Sithole said he has worked on numerous other projects sponsored by the municipality including the Msunduzi rising talent, the Tsogo Sun sprint, and the Pietermaritzburg Jazz festival. Also, passionate about broadcasting, Sithole also occasionally works as a guest presenter on SABC 1’s edutainment show Selimathunzi but he says servicing Msunduzi municipality residents is his first priority. “I think being the only candidate to be nominated twice for the awards should serve as encouragement for other municipal employees. I think the important thing is to know what your job is and strive to do it well. Your hard work will not go unnoticed, you will get the recognition, and it’s just a patience game.”

The 29-year-old from Imbali was recognised in the Best frontline service delivery employee of the year and the Best-implemented project of the year categories, respectively. In the latter, Sithole was applauded for his enormous contribution in promoting the Mandela Day marathon brand which in 2016 attracted more than 16 000 participants. Speaking to the Maritzburg Echo, an ecstatic Sithole said he was honoured to be recognised. “It means a lot to be recognised before reaching 10 years of services in the municipality. The awards mean that people are taking note of my hard work and it’s being appreciated. I am on the right path and it’s encouraging me to strive to be better at my job.” Sithole joined the municipality in 2007 as a human resources manage-

Local teacher bags award for excellence

ECHO

Sobantu Secondary school teacher Thandeka Sibiya outside the school premises.

THABANG MATHEBULA

A

PASSIONATE Pietermaritzburg schoolteacher has bagged a provincial award for excellence. Thandeka Sibiya, an English teacher at Sobantu High School, received the Excellence in Secondary School Teaching award in the National Teaching Awards, provincial level, as a reward for her relentless zeal for education. The ambitious Sibiya now has the national crown in her sights.

She is heading to Gauteng in January to represent the province in the national stage, where she will be competing with nine other teachers from across the country, who came top in their respective provinces in the same category for which she received her award. “When I first entered my portfolio I did not know how far I would get due to previous disappointments but things turned around for me this year. “I am excited about the accolade. It came to me as a thrilling shock,” she said.

Sibiya said the secret to success lies in developing a culture of research. “It is possible for other teachers to make it by adopting a culture of researching more about the topics in their curriculum,” said Sibiya. She says teaching is not a career that will result in wealth. The rewards are reaped through the success of the pupils. She said it is gratifying to see one’s pupils “beating the odds” when competing with other pupils from prestigious schools. Sibiya and two groups of pupils from her school travelled to Dubai earlier this year after their “sustainable living” project was chosen to represent the country. They subsequently jetted off to Sweden for a heritage, local history, and social cohesion project. They also travelled across the country representing the province in various research and oral school projects.

“I could not believe it because there were other outstanding teachers at the regional finals who I competed against. But after all, I am happy and proud,” she said. Prior to winning this award, Sibiya was already due to travel to America next year under the auspices of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Programme (TEA), an American programme aimed at equipping teachers across the world. The programme covers outstanding secondary school teachers in English, social studies, mathematics,

The criteria for The Excellence in Secondary School Teaching award category of the National Teaching Awards includes: • Contributing to the personal devel opment of pupils by communicating effectively with them about their performance and progress • Developing learners who will act in the interest of society, and whose values will be based on respect for democracy, equality, human dignity and social justice, as promoted in the constitution. • Providing guidance and support to pupils using the curriculum for ca reer and life choices. This year Sibiya and several pupils from Sobantu High school had travelled overseas on an educational excursion where they represented the country.

HE day of 23 September was the worst day of my life, because that day I lost my friend, my sister, my everything - and that was my mom. It was very painful. Tears and sadness were written all over my face but that didn’t break me, in fact it made me stronger. I had to look at life in a different way, in a matured way. Having my family next to me, the care, support and love they gave me was a blessing

because it was pure love - who we are without family? Hearing your father tell you that I will be your sister, friend, mother, brother and also your dad. Those words were heart warming and no one can ever erase them. In 2011 I was doing Grade 9. I failed that year and it was very painful. But the warmth I got from my family again gave me hope I didn’t give up in life but I was hungry for success. I will not rest until I reach my desti-

‘I would like to wish the Pietermaritzburg community at large a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. 2016 was not a good year for most people, they should take this time to recharge and come back strong in 2017. This year I decided not to go on vacation, I will be at home with my family.’

NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com Tis’ the season to be jolly! Maritzburg Echo reporter NOKUTHULA KHANYILE asked prominent people of the city to pass their seasons greetings to Pietermaritzburg residents and also found out what they will be doing on Christmas day.

‘I want to wish all our fans a peaceful Christmas. People must have fun responsibly and remember that January is around the corner, there should not be unnecessary spending in the euphoria of the festive season. On Christmas day I am going to be home with my family and then later on I’m scheduled to perform at Midmar Dam.’

‘2016 was a very challenging year economically and politically but we must show gratitude to God for seeing us through. I urge people to celebrate in peace and to spread love during this time, especially to those less fortunate. They must be responsible and money must be used wisely. I will be spending Christmas with my family and friends, every year we meet and have a Christmas lunch together after the church service.’

City’s Idol ready with first album

ECHO

KAVITHA PILLAY

P

IETERMARITZBURG’S songbird Noma Khumalo sometimes has to remind herself she has become the star she is. The 22-year-old, who shot to fame in the recent season of Idols SA, said while people are recognising her in public a lot more, she’s almost “back to normal” after the whirlwind media frenzy and recording studio work that came with the prestigious title. “I’ve mostly been working in Johannesburg, recording my album, working on a Christmas special coming soon on television and doing performance after performance,” said Khumalo, who was relaxing at home with her family on Monday. This is the second time she’s been home since her win. Her previous visit was to the school she taught at, Maritzburg Christian School, for a year-end party with her pupils. She said her schedule is so tight that she had to convince her

manager to permit the visit. Just three weeks after grabbing the Idols SA title, Khumalo’s debut album, Joy, is on sale at music outlets and available for purchase online. “Some places in Johannesburg have already sold out. I’m hoping Pietermaritzburg and KZN follow the same trend,” she said. When asked why she named the album Joy, she said: “Joy speaks of my experience, the feelings I’m left with after Idols … A celebration of Idols and my supporters - because this is not just my victory, it’s everyone’s,” said Khumalo. The 10-track album includes a song with Durban talents Sketchy Bongo and Kyle Deutsch, which Khumalo said was a “learning curve” for her on how to write music.

“I couldn’t believe that the Sketchy Bongo wanted to work with me! I was overwhelmed, and Rob [Cowling her manager with Gallo Music Records] - made it happen.” When asked how she feels about the amount of travelling that came with her new career, she said: “Flying is not for me … but Rob taught me tricks on how to cope.” And as for being stopped by fans in public, she said: “There are usually swarms of people who want ‘selfies’, which I usually let them take, but sometimes it ends up making me late for gigs or meetings.” While Khumalo has been dealing with being in the limelight in Jozi, her parents had a fair amount of fame to deal with back home. “We have been flooded with messages from people who knew us and congratulated us on our daughter’s achievement. It’s been a wonderful experience - something we did not expect. Noma has become famous and in a sense it made us famous too,” her father, Muntu Khumalo, said. Her brother, Bongumenzi Khumalo, who attends the school she taught at, said: “I’m so happy for her. Everyone at school is happy and excited.” Khumalo said Idols was not on her bucket-list this year, but her pupils encouraged her to go for it after they discussed achieving their dreams. “I’m so grateful to have the chance to be a role model, to encourage my students to reach for the stars and convince them that they can do anything they want to achieve,” she said. Khumalo said she doesn’t know when she will perform again in Pietermaritzburg, but hopes to perform with her band, Acoustiq Assassins, at the Hexagon Theatre in 2017. “While I’m finding my feet everything else is taking a break,” she added.

Local group is on a mission to be known KAVITHA PILLAY WHEN it comes to musical talent, Pieterma ritzburg is anything but lacking, and Aziwa group who hail from Imbali prove that the city is jampacked with a medley of music offerings. Aziwa, meaning “be known” in Zulu, was formed in July 2008 by three friends Sibonelo Mbatha, Sifiso Khoza and Selby Dumakude who sang at different gospel groups in Imbali. “The name ‘Aziwa’ was chosen because we wanted to be known in the local commu nity to make a positive difference and set an example,” said Mbatha. In 2008 they attempted to make their big break in Johannesburg. “At this point we didn’t have a clue on how to play the game. We were small fish in a big ocean, but we aimed to pursue a career as a group … we had faith,” said Mbatha. Aziwa returned home in 2009 to work on a recording deal with Pietermaritzburg based business Khabozinto Entertainment, with which they recorded and released their debut album, titled Finally. The group has experienced a few changes since then, with new member Phelelani Madlala joining the group to replace Khoza, and signing a record deal with Deep Rhythm Music a Pietermaritzburgbased label that is owned by Mbatha. Aziwa is currently working on their second album, The ReSet Of, which is due for release next year. The group said that this album is in conjunction with their new member and fresh sound.

Aziwa is a Pietermaritzburgbased vocal group consisting of (from left) Phelelani Madlala, Sibonelo Mbatha and Selby Dumakude. “We tweaked the sound a bit for this album. The first album was too commercial and this one is more deep and spiritual,” said Mbatha. While aiming to include more Afrohouse beats, they will include a few gospel tracks on the album. “We are planning on releasing a doubleCD album one with dance music and the other with soulful Afropop.” One of the tracks from the latest album, You Should have Told Me, can be heard on Ukhozi FM and Metro FM. “We do our own production and songwrit ing,” said Dumakude, who described Mbatha

as “Ngqondongqondo jack of all trades”. Aziwa has shared the stage with big names in the South African music industry including Big Nuz, Ringo Madlingozi and Sifiso Ncwane (who died earlier this month). They performed at events like the Magic Tour and Ukhozi FM’s Nyus’ ivolume and they appeared on the television show Shift on SABC1. “We’re focusing on small projects for now and will be part of the Lifestyle Ekasi Tour, in partnership with Vuma FM, which pro motes upandcoming artists,” said Mxolisi Dumakude, the group’s artist manager.

time. So he must just watch out. The pair partnered to a very impressive victory in the K2 2014, and Khwela felt it was now time for him to add the K1 title to his crown. “The Dusi K1 race is the hardest to win. It’s always been my dream to win it. It’s every black person’s dream. We’ve all been trying but it just never happens. I’ve won the K2 race with Birkett and he won it again in 2008. So it’s my time now,” he added. Meanwhile, race favourite Birkett who currently has two K1 titles to his name - said he was relishing the opportunity to retain his Dusi crown. “Preparations are going well. With the event about two months away, we’re trying to do as much training as we can. But, I’m looking forward to it. I still have a lot of work to do but I’m enjoying it so far. I do know the Dusi has got so much running in it that it’s such a different event. I still have a lot of work to do to get my running stronger. I will be defending my title but I’ll try forget about that and just take it as a separate year.” Birkett will be the man to beat following his first Ozzie Gladwin Canoe Marathon triumph in Pietermaritzburg, and a silver medal in the men’s K1 race at the Canoe Marathon World Championships in Germany this year. The province’s canoeing pioneer said he was looking forward to going up against his Dusi-winning partner. “I think Sbonelo is one of the strong contenders for the Dusi. There are other guys that have shown that they’ve also got a lot of strength this year, like Thulani Mbanjwa. I’m certainly looking forward to race against Sbonelo. It’s exciting that there’s lots of competition and depth,” he concluded. The race attracts between 1 600 and 2 000 paddlers each year.

2014 K2 winners Sbonelo Khwela and Andy Birkett will be the favourites for the K1 title at next year’s Dusi Canoe Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

22 December 2016

ITH the 2017 Dusi Canoe Marathon right at our doorstep, favourites Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Khwela said they were expecting the race to be another gruelling competition next year. The 66th edition of the three-day event will start on February 16 at the Natal Canoe Club, at Camps Drift, and finish at Blue Lagoon in Durban on Saturday, February 18, over a total distance of 120 km. The Shongweni valley star - who resumes his search of his first individual victory at the event - said his recent fourth straight victory at the 2016 Umpetha Challenge had given him good confidence ahead of the Dusi. “Preparations are going very well even though I started a bit late in September just before the Fish River Canoe Marathon. I did well there, finishing in the top 10. Winning the Umpetha Challenge again boosted my confidence. “I’ve always wanted to win the Dusi alone since I was introduced to the sport in 2005, but I’ve never come right there. I want to finish first next year. But, we’ll just have to see how I go on the day,” Khwela, who came a gonisingly close to maiden K1 victory in 2013, said. When asked if he was daunted by the prospect of facing six-time Dusi champ Andy Birkett, the 28-year-old replied: “Wow, you know, we’re expecting him to defend his title and that makes it more exciting. I’m definitely looking to go for the win this

United hold Wits to 11 draw >> Clever Boys climb to top of the log after entertaining clash

T

EN-MAN Maritzburg United drew 1-1 against title-chasing Bidvest Wits at Harry Gwala Stadium last night in an exciting game

that extended their unbeaten run to five games, and saw them leapfrog Orlando Pirates in the league. Former Team of Choice striker Cuthbert Malajila opened the scoring in the 70th minute on the night after coming on as a substitute. But their

lead lasted only four minutes as Mohau Mokate levelled matters, and earned a point for Fadlu Davids’ men. The talking point from the exciting first half was the performance of the referee, Mark Harrison, who somehow let Wits off with some rough chal-

All systems go for Midmar Mile 2017 NONDUMISO ZAKWE THE organisers of the 2017 Midmar Mile, the world’s largest open water swimming event, said it was all systems go for next year’s instalment of the race. The 44th edition, which attracts everyone from serious international athletes and Olympic swimmers to purely amateurs, both young and old, takes place annually at Midmar Dam, just outside Pietermaritzburg. Race director Wayne Riddin said: “Everything is going pretty okay. It’s obviously Christmas time now and people are on holiday but we’ll see a few more entries coming in when the holidays are over. Everything is in place and it’s looking encouraging for one of the better years. Especially with international competition and with the numbers looking good.” Seventime winner Chad Ho, who won last year’s race in 17 minutes flat, was expected to give his counterparts a run for their money again in the men’s race. Riddin is almost certain the Westville ace will make it eight titles in a row after what he described as “a successful year” for him. “Obviously the big highlight for South Africa is Chad Ho who has dominated the men. He’s down in Durban training. He did the Olympic Games this year

and he was only three seconds off an Olympic medal in that 10 km event. He’s had a great year,’’ he said. Adding to the excitement is the fact that the water levels have improved and that spectators can now watch the event unfold live on a big screen without having to move around to the finish line. Riddin explained further: “We’re making a few adjustments to the entertainment area where people will be able to sit and relax and watch the event live instead of going down to the finish areas. It will certainly be a different feel for people who want to sit and watch the big screen as opposed to going to the dam to watch the finish.” Swimmers from around the globe are expected to join the

lenges, while also managing to pick out light fouls committed by United. Both sides had chances to open the scoring in the first 45 minutes, but perhaps the best one of the early exchanges fell to Gabadinho Mhango, who missed the target with Bongane Mpandle well beaten. United’s defence, however, managed to regroup, and the quartet of Denis Weidlich, Bevan Fransman, Kwanda Mngonyama and Brian Onyango dealt with the threat posed by the Clever Boys’ attackers with ease. While they did prove to be dangerous at times, Wits strikers Mhango and Phakamani Mahlambi were firmly in the pockets of United’s back four, and they could not get a sniff of the goal. For United, there were rare chances where they got the large partisan crowd gathered at Harry Gwala excited, but they just could not find an opening. The loudest the crowd got was when United skipper Kurt Lentjies was given his marching orders for a reckless two-footed challenge on former Bafana Bafana defender Siboniso Gaxa. Like most games played here this season, both teams went into the break without scoring, and there were loud boos from the United faithful, who were not happy that the ref had sent off their captain, and made some dodgy calls during the duration of the half. The second half started at a frantic pace with both sides looking to take the lead. United were seemingly happy playing route one football — playing long balls over the top and hoping their

speedy wide men would find an opening, but they were unable to. Gaxa was withdrawn by Wits coach Gavin Hunt and his replacement, former United star Cuthbert Malajila, had an immediate impact when he broke the deadlock for the Students, giving them a 1-0 lead. Wits’ lead, however, did not last long as Mohau Mokate pulled one back, and brought the home crowd back to life, giving Fadlu Davids’ 10 men real hope that they could hit the back of the net again, and steal all three points against Wits. For the longest time after the equaliser, the Clever Boys bombarded United’s box with cross after cross, but they were well dealt with by United’s back four, although there was nearly a costly touch by Mngonyama, who inadvertently laid the ball onto the feet of Malajila, who scuffed his shot and failed to score. In the end, both teams had to settle for the point, and it was enough to lift United to seventh in the league, and Wits to the top of the log.
