Aids helpline A number of reasons to celebrate 0800012322 MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

T

HE family of a street child who was murdered this weekend are demanding justice from the courts, saying his murder must not be in vain. Cebolethu Ngcobo (17) was shot and killed on Saturday night, allegedly by a man going to pray at the Church Street mosque. Ngcobo’s mother, Nonhlanhla, said her son was well known in the Sanctuary Road area, where he had been begging for money and food since 2013. “My son ran away in 2013. He had bad friends and wanted his freedom but I would always visit him and buy him clothes and sometimes change him on the street,” she said. Ngcobo said she was heartbroken at the callous way in which her son died. Ngcobo’s sister, Busi Mkhize, said she was a like a mother to him and would also visit him often. “We would ask him to come home all the time and he would just sweetly say, ‘Mummy, I will come home’ but he never did,” Mkhize said tearfully. She said her neighbour called her on Saturday and told her about the boy’s death. The family, who live in Ashdown, said they went to the scene and saw Ngcobo’s “little body”. “The paramedics probably assumed he was 13 years old because they saw his small body. Cebo was a humble child and he was brilliant. He always did well at school but got into the wrong company,” Mkhize said. Describing his murder, the family said they spoke to other street children who said they were “shocked that that man killed him”. “He was only begging. He wasn’t stealing. We heard that Cebo went begging and the man asked him why he was there and told him to leave. The children said they all started laughing because

Man accused of shooting street child appears in court INGRID OELLERMANN A 25-YEAR-OLD man, Altaaf Dawood, appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with the shooting of beggar Cebolethu Mkhize in Church Street on Saturday.

Dawood was not asked to plead to the charge of murder facing him. He told Magistrate M. Boikhutso that he intends to hire a private attorney to represent him at his trial. The case was postponed to 31 May for a formal bail application.

He wasn’t stealing. We heard

man why he shot him. They told me that my son was crying and told the man he didn’t do anything, he was only begging,” said the tearful mother. Police arrested a 26-year-old man shortly after the shooting. The man allegedly fled into the Church Street mosque where he was arrested. The family are now busy with preparations for Cebo’s funeral, which will be held on Saturday. “My question is why would a man who was going to pray, kill an innocent child? The man could have chased him away but he killed our child,” said Mkhize. She said the family are calling for justice for their son’s death. “We don’t want justice just for Cebo. We want justice for all the innocent street children who are treated badly.”

that Cebo went begging and the man asked him why he was there and told him to leave they thought the man was joking with him as the people in the area always joke around with them,” Ngcobo said. She said the other street children told her that after her son was shot, he was still alive for a short time. “They said he fell to the ground and asked the

LELINGOMUSO Primary School in Imbali recently won two trophies after two choirs from the school achieved first and second place in the schools’ choir competition, in which eight schools took part. The first choir comprised Grade R and 2 pupils and was orchestrated by teacher, Sihle Malinga. The second choir comprised Grade 3 and Grade 4 pupils, led fellow teacher Dudu Zulu. Choir conductor, Themba Ndlovu, said the pupils had been honing their singing skills since the beginning of the year. “We started preparing for the competition since the year started. The uMgungundlovu District competition was held from 4 May to 6 May and we are happy with the results. Malinga’s choir came first and second with their English and African songs, respectively. Zulu’s choir obtained second position in the English category. “Winning the awards boosts the morale of pupils and that drives them to improve their talent. The trophies are an incentive to show that as a school we have achieved a lot,” he said. “Not everyone can excel academically and we believe that if pupils have a talent they must polish it and excel in whatever they do,” he added.

Laduma High pupils to get ‘work experience’ NJABULO CELE >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com TODAY KZN Financial Literacy Association will host 10 pupils from Laduma High in Mpumuza as part of the Take a Girl Child To Work Day campaign.

The associationtrust said that during a recent visit to the school they discovered there are pupils who have never been to town and saw this as a reflection of the levels of inequality in communities. KZN Financial Literacy Association’s media and marketing officer, Babalwa

Luphondo, said it is a disgrace that after 21 years of democracy there are young black girls that have never been to town or have never used a computer in their life. “Social Development Minister Bathabi le Dlamini used to study at Laduma so we have sent the department a proposal on

To tackle this issue, Nguse said they have proposed an automated panic button system be installed at all major exits and entrance points, where if a student is in trouble, the button can be pressed and a distress signal will be sent to RMS. In addition, Nguse said security within residences is also problematic. “Students are using padlocks to secure their rooms and break-ins are frequent. We are reviewing new access systems that can be installed,” Nguse said. In addition, RMS also provides regular patrols and CCTV surveillance. “There are plans in place to install intercoms in the residences and panic buttons on walkways,” Seshoka said. “Students are requested to be vigilant of their personal belongings and their surroundings. Students should always walk in a group when venturing off campus and valuables like cellphones and laptops should not be visible on their person.”

T

HE Msunduzi Municipality handed over a newly built house to the Dladla family at Imbali Unit 2 after their old house was destroyed by a burst water pipe, which ran underneath the house. One of the family members, Nompumelelo Dladla, thanked the municipality, but said that it had taken them the whole year to build the house. “In 2010 we had the first burst at the back of the house. Municipal workers came, they repaired the pipe and when they finished they buried it. The second pipe burst at the front of the house, by the main door. They came again to repair it and said they would not bury it because if something happened they would be able to quickly fix it. “Management came and saw the pipe ran underneath the house. The hole at the front of the house was so big we had difficulty entering

the front door. “The third burst was a disaster. The burst occurred right inside the house. Our furniture and the house were badly damaged. The house was filled with water and we had to break the doors to let the water out.” Dladla said the municipality told them the construction of the house was poorly conducted by the previous government. Although she said she was unhappy about the period of time it has taken the municipality to rebuild her home, they are grateful. “They said they will look into buying furniture to replace the ones that were damaged. It took a whole year for them to build the house, but they assured us that they would help us,” added Dladla. Msunduzi Municipality councillor Eunice Majola said they could not sit and watch the family suffer. “We could not let the family live under such conditions. As the municipality we couldn’t keep quiet and do nothing about this.”

Theatre workshop a hit

M

ZANSI Theatre Project Advancement recently organised an acting skills workshop titled “Khulani Theatre Workshop”, the aim of which was to reintroduce and develop acting skills in communities. The group wanted to link the community groups and the academics in the field as well as attempting to create a new stronger network for theatre practitioners in Pieter- maritzburg. The workshop was facilitated by Roel Twinjstra, originally from the Netherlands, who has written and directed more than 50 theatre shows and has worked in more than 10 countries. - Supplied.

Thornville Primary fight against social ills NJABULO CELE >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com THORNVILLE Primary School, in association with the Greater Edendale Athletics Club, recently held its inaugural five-kilometre fun run at the school’s sports ground as an anti-drug abuse awareness campaign. The school’s media and marketing co-ordinator, Ayesha Jackson, said 35 people participated in the fun run. “The reason we started the campaign is because there are a lot of youths that use drugs, and the area has a high rate of teenage pregnancy. “There many stakeholders that helped us

with this event, including Khayelihle Funeral Services. Drug abuse is a social illness that needs to be addressed,” said Jackson. She said hosting the fun run was a social and fun way of getting the message out to the public. “The event was organised by six school committee members. We host fun runs annually, but this is our first time that we focus on drug abuse. Our events target the social fabric of our community and we would appreciate a fruitful partnership between us and government departments. “Crime is another major obstacle in the community, which affects pupils and might lead to crime-inflicted living,” said Jackson.

Concept of democracy is alien to Africa I

Anele Mngadi

N my country South Africa there is a shack land called a democracy. Theoretically speaking democracy is a beautiful concept “for the people, by the people”, but the truth is democracy maintains Western domination over Africa. Democracy is a Western solution and fails drastically to solve African problems because it does not have the same meaning in Africa as it does in Western countries simply because Africa faces more challenges than any other continent. Democracy forces Africans to conform to international standards and norms. In a democratic state politicians only serve the interest of those with

money and our country is a good example of this, the system is exploitative and pushes capitalistic agenda’s of liberals. So instead of democracy bringing progress it comes with some regress of its own as we have moved from a race struggle to a class struggle. Democracy is designed to economically enslave Africa, it is a trap for Africans to always be economically dependent on the “international system” which is controlled and operated by non-African states that occupy the hegemonic positions. Before imperialism Africa had an unnamed system of government which operated under the authority of chieftains, the system

was characterised by African values that were designed by Africans, values such as Ubuntu, respect, for one person to be wealthy didn’t necessarily require that the next person be poor. The irony of democracy is that it offers no freedom whatsoever, neo-fascist institutions like the parliament are not progressive. The idea of freedom is very much Africa and democracy isn’t and we shouldn’t confuse the two, we were mesmerised by elections, we forgot democracy. The solution is neither capitalism nor socialism, but rather Africanism, it is time for Africans to adapt a system that speaks to Africans. It is senseless for us to adopt aristocracy simply because it is functional in England, for the same reason why the Truth and Reconciliation Committee failed to launch in the Congo and Kenya, but only works in South Africa. No system of government can be imported, it must come from the ground.

Questions to ask potential building contractors B

UILDING or renovating a home or commercial property is a massive undertaking. Horror stories about fly-by-night building contractors, who disappear halfway through a job, are plentiful. Before you invest a substantial amount of money on a project, we suggest that you pose the following questions to any potential building contractors to ensure that they are professionals of good repute. Are they registered with and certified by the National Building Registration Council? According to The Housing Consumers Protection Measurers Act, any individual or company in the home building industry is required, by law, to be registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council

MAY 2016

SUPPLEMENT

(NHBRC). Regulated industry criteria concerning construction, technical and financial capabilities need to be met by all building contractors. The NHBRC only certifies those who meet these requirements. Steer clear of any company (subcontracted electricians or plumbers included) that is not certified or registered with the relevant bodies in order to avoid putting the safety of both your building and financial investment in jeopardy. What certificates will I receive once the building has been completed? Once the project is completed, building contractors are required to hand over certain legal documents to the property developer or owner. For example, all electrical wiring needs to

be approved and then certified by the relevant municipality. A procedure that is often neglected, or alternatively is attempted by uncertified building contractors, is the poisoning of the property soil. This is done to create a chemical barrier which prevents subterranean wood destroying termites from getting into your house. This task must, by law, be performed by a registered pest control operator. A list of all such operators is available from the South African Pest Control Association (SAPCA). This procedure is crucial as termites are prevalent throughout South Africa. If your building contractors do not hire professional pest control services, the structural safety of your building is at risk. Professionals who are certified to do this task will offer a

five- year guarantee – unlike building contractors who are not qualified to complete the task. What type of industry experience does that company have? As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Many building contractors attempt to lure potential clients by bending the truth about their previous experience. Ask potential building contractors for testimonials and the contact details of their past clients. It is advisable to get in touch with previous clients in order to find out about their experience first-hand. In addition, you may want to visit some of the properties to inspect the quality of the workmanship. Are they registered with the Compensation Fund in terms of the Compensation for occupational Injuries and Diseases (Coid) Act? All building contractors are required by law to be registered with the government-regulated compensation fund. In order to do this, they have to meet a set of stringent requirements. Only then will they be awarded with a letter of good standing. If your builder is not in possession of the document, it is advisable to look for alternate building contractors. The legal ramifications, should a worker be injured while on the job, are serious. This means that it is of paramount importance you verify that the builder in question is in possession of this document. If you have used building contractors who are not registered,

you may be held liable in the event of the death or injury of a worker. What is the builder’s current capacity? It is useless going through the process of briefing your building contractors only to find out that they are busy for the next three months. Establish whether your builder has the time to take on your project Many building contractors will burden themselves with too many jobs at once – make sure that yours is absolutely honest about what they can and cannot handle. No one wants their building project to be a job that is neglected nor do they want to wait six months for the completion of a project, due to their contractors having too many clients. Do you have a detailed contract agreement in place? In the event of anything going awry, the contract agreement between you and the building contractors will be your saving grace. The contract needs to explicitly state the agreed-upon budget, time-frame and job specifications. This should include methods of payment, labour costs and the cost of building materials. In addition, the contact numbers of the foreman in charge of the site is also of utmost importance. Before building commences, sit down with your building contractors and go through everything – in detail – to avoid any costly misunderstandings. - www.thespecialists.co.za

Good house planning H

OUSE planning is the most important part of the design process whether you’re designing a new home or designing a remodelling or addition. It’s a fool’s game to try to design your house without having a clear idea of what you want to achieve. I compare it to driving off for your family holiday without knowing your destination. You’ll never know when you’ve gotten there because you really have no idea where you’re going. Of course, determining the rooms you want is an essential part of house planning. But it’s much more than that. House planning is really “total project” planning. Important questions you can ask yourself about what you want your house to be and some preliminary planning tasks you can perform to help you along. Critical design questions • What is the size and scope of your project? A. Create a preliminary programme (a list of rooms with sizes and characteristics) and visit houses that are for sale to get an idea of the approximate square footage that your house will have to be to hold the rooms you want. B. Do a preliminary cost assessment. Talk with builders. Compare

sale prices (minus the lot value) of houses for sale to get a range of costs per square foot. C. If you don’t already have a building site, evaluate the range of prices for building lots and sites that may suit your requirements. D. Compare the overall cost with your budget. E. Have preliminary discussions with architects and builders to get opinions on costs and scope. F. Find a balance between your budget and your desires and needs. Be realistic. Don’t be overly optimistic or you will be frustrated and disappointed later. • Who is going to help me with this project? A. Select an architect or house designer. B. Select a builder. C. Select and interior designer • What will this house be? A. Finalise the programme. This is the most important aspect of house planning. B. Compile magazine clippings and notes. These are “inspiration images” and they are valuable in communicating ideas. • How will the house sit on the site? A. Compile site analysis, schematic

If you take the time to do your house planning cor rectly, you will avoid many of the pitfalls that so often plague home building and remodelling projects. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

floor plans set on the site, determine the approach to the house, and so forth. B. Evaluate several house placement options. • Where will the rooms be positioned? A. Do preliminary layouts. B. Evaluate several layouts and decide on basic concepts. • What will the house look like? A. The floor plan grows to three dimensions and becomes a house. B. Investigate several alternatives. C. Don’t be afraid to reassess earlier decisions. House planning is a dynamic process. You will “know” the house better and better as you go through the process. Don’t latch on to early con-

cepts so strongly that you are unable to see the shortcomings later on. • Is the design on budget? A. Do preliminary cost estimates. You can use a prospective builder for this, or the architect may do it. B. Determine what the lowest price the house can be without altering the programme in some way. C. Determine what the highest price the house is likely to be unless you choose expensive fixtures and finishes. • How will I get exactly what I want? A. An architect completes the construction documents (drawings and specifications). These substantially detail the house.

B. Items that are not yet determined are included as allowances. C. Owner reviews and approves the construction documents. • What is the actual cost going to be? A. Construction documents are given to the builder(s) for pricing. B. The builder(s) respond with either bids or solid estimates for a costplus contract. • How will I pay for this? A. Owner decides on method of financing (such as construction loan and then a permanent mortgage, a construction loan that converts to a permanent mortgage when the house is complete, or cash and no financing). B. Builder provides an estimate of schedule of payments and monthly amounts. C. Contract stipulates how and when each progress payment is to be made. D. Contract stipulates how the contract will end. That is, when the final payment is to be made to the builder, when the builder is deemed to have completed the work and what warranty the builder will provide to the owner. If you take the time to do your house planning correctly, you will avoid many of the pitfalls that so often plague home building and remodelling projects. Answer all the questions as early as you can and you will be able to enjoy the fun parts of building your home or remodelling or enlarging your existing house. - www.about-home-design.com

I TOP TOP watersaving tips for your garden

T is time to become a water-saving warrior with a flourishing garden full of happy plants.

HYDRO ZONE • Group plants together according to their water requirements into one-drop, two-drop, three-drop and no-drop zones - the latter including surfaces such as permeable paving and gravel, and plants that can survive on rainwater once established. • Plant a variety of endemic and hardy indigenous plants suitable to your climate as a lasting backbone taking up most of the available space. Plant those that need more water in smaller beds or containers. • In large gardens, plant huge swathes of drought-hardy ground covers and spreading succulents like crassulas, cotelydons, vygies, gazanias, arctotis and osteospermums. Include groupings of grasses and restios like Elegia tectorum. • If you are partial to bright colour, plant annuals in pots and in the foreground of shrub beds. You can simply water them with a bucket instead of opening the sprinkler. • Create more interest with hard landscaping elements like pathways, water elements, focal points and lots of pots to take up ground space. HOW TO SPOT A WATERWISE PLANT Plants that are not water guzzlers normally have certain characteristics in common. Look for the following: small needle-like foliage, grey foliage colour, hairy leaves, fleshy leaves, a waxy leaf surface, leaves that close up in dry spells and leaves with a lighter shade underneath as in droughts they will flip them upwards, reflecting the heat of the

sun away. HOT TIP Even plant camels will need regular watering at a young stage to become established, before being able to withstand periods of drought well. If you have planted a young tree or shrub, create a basin around the stem and see that this basin is filled up when watering with a hosepipe or bucket. MORE TIPS • Rethink your lawn area — reduce lawn surfaces, reduce the watering sessions for your lawn and mow regularly. • Care for the soil — add copious amounts of organic material, which will change the soil structure into a cultivatable loam full of good soil organisms with better drainage and waterholding capacity. • Mulch — mulches like bark nuggets, pine needles, peach pips and other organic material placed over the soil keeps plant roots cool and moist between watering. HOW YOU SHOULD WATER • Irrigate in the early morning or late afternoon. • Never water in windy conditions. • Water less often, but deeper and for longer periods. • Use soaker hoses to water at ground level rather than overhead sprinklers. • Install a proper irrigation system controlled electronically, or fit a timing device to all taps to switch your hosepipe off in case you forget to do it. - Wendy Moulton. • Visit The Witness Garden Show from 23 September to 25 September at the Royal Showgrounds for more ideas on how to save water, or visit www.garden show.co.za

Are you ready to own a home? A

VITAL aspect to any property purchase is for the buyer to know that they are ready and prepared to own a home, advises Theresa Burger, broker-manager of RE/MAX Finest. “Buying a home is an exciting step to take, but it does come with certain responsibilities and obligations,” she says. “In order to be fully prepared for the commitment of owning a home, a buyer needs to do some research and take a few essential steps before they start their property search.” Burger says this will ensure that they are making an informed decision which will be in their best interests in the future. She says one of the first steps that any potential buyer should take is to determine their level of affordability. “The main concern for potential buyers is whether they are financially in a position to purchase a property. A reputable real estate professional will be able to assist the buyer regarding determining their affordability level by taking into account their income and expenditure,” says Burger. “Ideally the buyer should get pre-qualification from a bond origination company or financial institution. This way they will know the pricing of

the homes that they can comfortably afford and continue to pay over the term of the loan period.” According to Burger, it is not just the bond repayment that should be considered when looking at finances. Aside from the bond repayments, a buyer needs to consider the following: •interest rates the banks are charging; •rates and taxes payable on the property; •transfer and bond costs payable by the buyer; and •if buying a sectional title property, body corporate rules and regulations and all levies imposed by the body corporate. Burger says that once a buyer has determined their financial standing, it is important for them to communicate their requirements to the real estate agent they choose to work with. “Communication is vital in the relationship between the buyer and the agent. If the communication channels are open, it will be far easier for the agent to understand exactly what the buyer is looking for.” She says the number one consideration for buyers to take into account when looking for a property is its location. Ideally the property should be in a

good area and be close to amenities such as shops, a hospital or medical clinic and good schools. Distance from the workplace and accessibility to major transport routes should also be taken into account. “Considering that purchasing a property is a large investment, it is important to buy a home that will appreciate in value over time and will offer the buyer a good return when they decide to sell,” says Burger. Africa, says a property’s location and proximity to amenities are the major determining factors that influence a home’s potential appreciation. It is better to opt for a smaller home in a better area, than a larger home in a less attractive area. During the selection process, Burger says buyers should pay attention to any defects that the property may have. Another aspect to consider is whether the home has been added on to, or other structures have been built

on to the property. “The buyer should insist on seeing the municipal house plans to ensure that all buildings and features such as the swimming pool have been added to the plans,” says Burger. One of the most important aspects of preparing to purchase a home is selecting the right agent to work with. “Legislation changes regularly, so it is vital to work with an agent who is experienced and knows the ins and outs of a property transaction.” - Property24.

ECHO BUILD YOUR OWN Ensure your gas is safe

A

T this time of the year when we start to feel the chill in the air, many of us reach for the ignition switch on our gas heaters. It is essential, however, first to make sure we know the safety tips and that our gas heaters are safe to use. Always follow manufacturer guidelines

carefully to avoid incidents like carbonmonoxide poisoning and household fires. Antonio Vannucci-Smit, owner of Ionic Gas Plumbing Electrical, says that as with all gas appliances, it is recommended that the heater is serviced regularly by a qualified gas technician, in line with

What to do if you smell gas • When you smell gas, do not light flames or create sparks, including lighting a ciga rette. • Don’t operate light switches, appliances or phones. • Leave the area with the doors and windows open. • Do not use an electrical fan to try to blow away any leaking gas. • Shut off the gas at the gas bottle valve by turning it clockwise. • Don’t turn it back on until it has been checked by a qualified gas technician. • Do not return inside your home until the gas has had time to dissipate. • Remember that LPG is heavier than air and can accumulate in low areas. • Get your system checked.

Pointers that homeowners should consider when using gas heaters this winter • Always turn your heater off before going to bed or leaving your property. • Make sure all the components, such as the heater, regulator and hose connectors of your unit, are wellmaintained. • Do not use aerosols or flammable cleaning liquids or sprays in close proximity to the heater. • Avoid sitting or standing too close to your heater; it might feel nice and toasty, but gas burns are no joke. • Always ensure that the room in use is well ventilated. If it becomes stuffy, open windows and doors to allow fresh air in immediately. Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that can go completely

We have all been guilty of this at one time or another, whether it is heating up a towel while showering or socks before going to bed. Remember that this is dangerous as a fire can start without anyone noticing. • Do not move your unit while it is in use. First turn it off and wait for it to cool down a little before moving it around. • Keep gas heaters at least one metre away from flammable objects, including furniture, curtains, books and boxes.

Interesting fact Natural gas is odourless, so energy companies add the smell of rotten eggs (mercaptan) to help homeowners detect it. This is also an effective way to detect a gas leak at home. Always remember that if you service your gas heater or installation regularly and use it correctly, it should be safe and economical to use.

Bidding war for your home may be tempting, but risky

I

N any town or suburb where the demand from prospective buyers exceeds the number of homes for sale, it is usually only a matter of time before property sellers start to receive competing offers to purchase, and have to decide which of them to accept or reject. If you do end up in the middle of a bidding war for your home, you should

start by looking for the offers with the fewest contingencies or “get out” clauses, says Shaun Rademeyer, CEO of BetterLife Home Loans. And while this may seem like a good problem to have, the decision might not be as easy to make as you think, because selling a home is often about more than just the money, says Rademeyer.

“What if you received an offer for considerably more than your asking price, for example, provided you were prepared to move out and give the buyer occupation by the end of the month? You might not be willing, or able, to accept it,” he says. On the other hand, Rademeyer says you might choose to accept a lower offer from a prospective buyer who

has already been pre-approved for home loan finance, rather than a higher offer from someone who still has to organise finance or sell their current home. Indeed, he says there are many factors to consider and, as any good estate agent will agree, you really need to look beyond price before you decide, and resist being pressurised into making a hasty choice. “A buyer that makes a good offer, but says it is only on the table for a couple of hours, for example, is probably not that serious, and is therefore likely to prove difficult to deal with during the transfer process.” So, if you do end up in the middle of a bidding war for your home, you should start by looking for the offers with the fewest contingencies or “get out” clauses. Ideally, your would-be buyers should not have another property to sell before they will actually be able to buy yours, and should have home loan pre-approval so you can be confident that they really will be able to secure the necessary home loan within a few days. “Next, you may want to consider which prospective buyers are most willing to accommodate your timing as regarding occupation of the property. If you need to delay a move until the end of a school term, for example, or until the end of a work contract, that can have a significant influence on which offer you will accept.” In addition, he says you should find

out whether the competing buyers already have the cash in hand that they will need to pay a deposit, as well as the transfer duty, bond registration costs and legal fees. “It is no good accepting a higher offer if you are going to have to wait months for a buyer to get this cash together, and your agent should, in fact, only bring you offers from people who are financially able to buy your property, as well as being willing to do so.” He says you also need to make sure that you negotiate transparently and in good faith. “For example, if you tell someone who made an offer on a Saturday morning that you’re not going to respond until Monday, you must also tell them that this is because you are expecting further offers after your show house on Sunday,” explains Rademeyer. And if you receive several similar offers, Rademeyer says you should be open about that too, and give each of those prospective buyers the opportunity to either confirm that this is their “best and highest” offer, or to find out what it would take to make you pick their offer and decide if they want to do that. “However, you must then be prepared to accept the improved offer. Tempting as it may be to keep a bidding war going, most buyers won’t like it, and you will run the high risk of ending up with no offer at all.” - Property24.

Signs that you need a new home S

OME people like moving house as it gives them the feeling of having a “fresh start” every few years. But for most, moving is a stressful experience they prefer to put off as long as possible. This is according to Richard Gray, CEO of Harcourts Real Estate, who says sometimes it is really necessary, and there are certain definite signs that the time has come for you to start looking for a new home. The most common of these is that your family has outgrown your current home. As children get older they need more space, such as their own bedrooms, and their own work or recreation areas. “They also don’t necessarily leave home these days as soon as they’ve finished studying, and if you also need to accommodate aging parents, it is likely that you will need a bigger home,” he says. Similarly, if you were single but are now part of a couple, you will probably want to move from your trendy studio apartment or tiny townhouse to something bigger. New marriages and partnerships are another major reason for people to move home. Alternatively, you could be in a situation where your family has grown and gone off to set up their own homes and you suddenly have too much space

— that is, rooms you don’t even use and a big garden that is troublesome to maintain. “And if you are about to retire or have already done so, you may feel even more strongly that the time has come to sell and move to a new place that gives you more security and more freedom to do what you want.” Gray says other major reasons to move include: • Financial worries: if you are straining to pay your utility bills and running costs on top of your home loan repayment every month, you should consider moving to a more affordable home, so that you can get a grip on your finances. • Transport woes: if you’re weary of traffic congestion or a long and costly commute each day, it may be time to consider moving closer to work, and preferably to a neighbourhood where the schools, shops and sports facilities are within walking distance. • Too much maintenance: some people love home improvement and DIY, but if you want to spend your weekends doing something other than mowing the lawn or retiling the bathroom, it could be that you need to move to a new home in a complex. Or you may just want a more energy efficient, “‘green” home that will save you

Moving into a new house may be a stressful experience for some. PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

money on utilities. He says an indication of an urgent move is if you believe that your neighbourhood is going into a decline.

“If you notice additional litter, more loiterers in the park, more empty shops and houses, and more crime or police activity, the writing is on

the wall and you should sell your property and move as soon as possible.” - Property24.

Rapper to perform the Royal Show

ECHO

S

OUTH African rapper, Kwesta, and gospel star, Thobekile Mkhwanazi, will headline the Royal Vuma Sunday Mix at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, 29 May. The concert is being hosted by the Royal Show, in conjunction with Vuma 103FM. Kwesta (real name Senzo Mfundo Vilakazi) released his debut studio album Special Rekwest in September 2010. He followed this in November 2013 with DaKAR (Da King of Afrikan Rap), which debuted on the South African iTunes hip-hop-rap chart at number three. Only Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP II and Drake’s Nothing Was the Same had a higher entry. Kwesta’s third studio album DaKAR II was released on 26 February and features three singles, Nomayini, Ngud, which features guest vocals from Cassper Nyovest, and K1 God. KZN-born, Mkhwanazi’s song, Wonderful Day, was nominated for two SABC Crown Gospel Awards last year in the categories of best traditional and best song of the year. Also on the bill are DJ Sox, DJ Andre, Linda “The Game” Ndimande and the Msizi Shembe. Tony Mallam, managing director of Vuma FM, said the concert would be “an inspirational family affair”, hosted by Vuma FM’s Kwasa Breakfast Show presenter, Linda “Mr Magic” Sibya. “We are excited to be partnering once again with the Royal Show for what promises to be an afternoon filled with the best in inspirational music that is reflective of what we play on Vuma 103FM,” he added. “We are about inspiring KwaZuluNatal through our music and our con-

>> Kwesta to perform in ‘Sunday Mix’ concert tent, and that is exactly what audiences can expect at this concert – they are guaranteed to feel inspired and uplifted through a selection of music that includes some gospel, house music, old skool classics as well as a variety of current hits.” Entry to the Royal Show, from 27

N exhibition of artworks produced by matriculants from schools in the city and Midlands has become a highlight on the Tatham Art Gallery’s calendar. Due to renovations in 2015 the gallery was unable to host the exhibition, but this year 17 schools are participating. The gallery’s education staff visited schools last year to see what the pupils produced. They were assisted by an independent selector to make the final choices. “As always, there are a number of surprises in this year’s selection,” said Pinky Madlabane-Nkabinde, education officer at the gallery. The artworks take many forms, including sculptures, ceramics, paintings, installations, photographs, prints and digital images. A number of art journals, which form part of the curriculum, were also selected for display. “We looked at the progress from Grade 10 to the final stage in Grade 12, where pupils produce their final piece. Sometimes there is a gradual link or consistency, and huge progress in technique and skills,” said Madlabane-Nkabinde. Apart from traditional art, the exhibition boasts innovative subjects, techniques and use of medium, as the pupils provided a shift in visual art. “From found objects, where we see a clock made out of all sorts of steel elements by Richard Braithwaite from Hilton College, titled The Gears of Time, to the bleach and ink drawings from girls of Russell High, who took to the streets of Pietermaritzburg to do architectural drawings, which

THE Gay and Lesbian Network (GLN) is hosting KZN’s Got Talent and is inviting everyone to audition. Auditions will be held on 18 and 19 June at the Pietermaritzburg Tourism Hub, at 280 Langalibalele Street between 9am and 4pm. Entrance is R50 for individuals and R100 for a group. Audition: Your audition may not exceed two minutes. Any act that exceeds two minutes will be stopped. Dancers must bring their own music on a CD, singers must bring a backing track to their audition, musicians must bring their own equipment, and variety acts must take health and safety into account. You can win your share of R10 000, whether you sing, dance, play an instrument or have other entertaining talents. The final talent show will be held on 25 June at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. ‘Termite!’ performers TQ Zondi and Mpilo Nzimande will be performing at The Theatre at St Anne’s College on Monday 30 May. CAN there be anything more delightful than the combination of the high-energy style of TQ Zondi and Mpilo Nzimande and Greig Coetzee’s penmanship. The astute Termite! combines physical theatre, satire and lunacy as it blends traditional folk tales with modern South African life. This fast-paced trilogy of stories tells tales of various animals as they take on minicab taxis, Colonel Sanders and try to explain why dogs sniff each other’s behinds. Fresh from winning the coveted Audience

Favourite Award at the Musho! Festival in Durban and having full houses at last year’s Hilton Arts Festival, Termite! performers Zondi and Nzimande have made a name for themselves nationally as Ovation Award winners for Woza Albert!, as well as performances in The Island. Termite! is written by Greig Coetzee and directed by Peter Mitchell and will be at The Theatre at St Anne’s College on Monday 30 May at 6.30 pm. Tickets cost R50. HE Concerts SA Music Mobility Fund, which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake tours across southern Africa, announced that 22 tours will be supported this year. Thus far, the fund has supported over 250 artists and close to 100 tours across southern Africa, from Cape Town to Tanzania. Tours selected for support in this round cover a wide range of music expressions. Recipients for regional touring are The City, Yeoville Radio, Ildo Nandja, Native Young, Black South Easter, UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra and Salim Washington. Recipients of the national touring fund are Conroy Cupido, Rowan Stuart, Mezzanine Floor, Shane Cooper’s Skyjack, Saxit Quartet, Sibot, Ernie Smith, Concord Nkabinde, Taxi Violence, Fifi the Rai Blaster, Titi Luzipo, Mageshen Naidoo, Ariel Zamonsky, Oscar Rachabane and Joel Karabo Elliot. The Music Mobility Fund received 92 proposals from established and emerging musicians. The quality of submissions was extremely high, making the task of selecting successful applicants difficult, and final selection was based on alignment with the objectives of the Music Mobility Fund and conditions as set out in the call for proposals.

The fund is designed to help musicians, music-industry professionals and organisations build on already established domestic success, and develop connections, markets and audiences for their work. It also provides support towards travel and transportation, material costs, accommodation and visas. Project manager of Concerts SA, Nailla Dollie, said: “Our programmes have contributed to building music circuits. It has also incentivised individual artists and many bands to pack their bags and tour little towns and dorpies, festivals at home and in neighbouring countries.” The Music Mobility Fund is administered by Concerts SA, a joint South African-Norwegian initiative housed under the auspices of the Samro Foundation. Concerts SA receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Samro Foundation and Concerts Norway. The project aims to support live music in South Africa by finding and implementing ways to create a vibrant and viable live music circuit in the region. It also aims to develop an appreciation of live music. See http://concertssa.co.za or follow Concerts SA on Twitter and Facebook. - Supplied.

Former Carter High pupil wins 2015 Moot Court competition >> ‘Emerging triumphant has been one of my most memorable achievements’

C

ARTER High School song Justitia et Veritas epitomises the positive ethos that Alyssa Smith takes from her high-school years. “Keep on striving for perfection” has been her mantra. Smith matriculated from Carter High in 2014. In October 2015 she won the provincial Moot Court competition and was awarded Best Heads of Argument in the national Moot Court competition. The Moot is a mock trial, where participants role-play legal practitioners, arguing a specific set of facts in an authentic court room. It is purposed to

allow pupils the opportunity of experiencing practical aspects of law, such as the reality of legal research, legal drafting, oral advocacy as well as interaction with legal practitioners. “Emerging triumphant throughout my Moot Court competition has been one of my most memorable achievements and has afforded me the reassurance that hard work and dedication definitely do pay off,” said Smith. Currently studying towards an LLB law degree at Varsity College, Smith shares that law continually allows her to develop her intellect while enhancing skills of self-discipline and

perseverance. She admits the amount of work is challenging, but this fits her character to a tee as she enjoys a good challenge. Smith is inspired by the acronym “FINAO” as quoted by Gene Kranz, director of the Apollo, Gemini, and Space shuttle missions - “failure is not an option”. To the class of 2016 at Carter High School, grab hold of the words “keep on striving for perfection” as you venture forward. It is not just the words that should be emphasised, but the challenge of taking the initiative to ensure those words are realised in every endeavour taken. - Supplied.

The theme for this year’s Mandela Day Marathon is ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’

NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile.mtolo@media24.com

R

EGISTRATION for this year’s Mandela Day Marathon will be on 25 August at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and on 26 and 27 August at the Olympia Hall at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg. The theme for this year’s race on 28 August is from one of the former president and struggle icon Nelson Mandela’s famous inspirational quotes, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Msunduzi Municipality marketing and communications manager Lungelo Sithole said that participating in the 42.2km race from Imbali to Howick seems impossible, however, the past winners have proved it can be done. “When you start any project achieving your goals seems impossible, but by the moment you take the first step you realise that it can be done. Goals seem impossible when you look at them from far. “We have met a lot of runners who are scared to run the whole marathon. We would like them to take the bold step and challenge themselves. By the time they finish the 42.2km race they will have a profound appreciation for the heritage that this prestigious race holds,” said Sithole. He said this year the marathon will be celebrating five years and is expected to host up to 15 000

athletes from over 30 countries. The race starts at the Manayi Hall where Mandela delivered his last speech on 26 March, 1961 before his arrest near Howick the following year on August 5 Sithole stated that many athletes who in the past participated in the 42.2km race have said that the “Struggle Hill” is the toughest point of the race. The most difficult years of Madiba’s political life are symbolised by this eight-kilometre steep stretch, said Sithole in a statement. Entries for the competition close on 31 July and there will be no date extensions. There will be 15 refreshment stations catering for athletes’ needs. “Various sponsors have come on board for the 2016 Mandela Day Marathon and all dietary requirements will be met. The refreshment portfolio will be led by John Hall well known in the road running fraternity assisted by 400 volunteers to distribute 60 tons of refreshments to the more than 10 000 participants. About 250kg biscuits, 300kg chocolates, 90kg Energellies, 30kg potato crisps, 250kg bananas, 20 pockets of potatoes, 55 pockets of oranges, 20kg salt, 40 000 litres of water in sachets and 500ml bottles, 3 000 litres of energy drink in sachets, 7 000kg ice, 8 000 litres of Coca-Cola and 70 000 cardboard Coca-Cola cups will be handed to athletes,” said Sithole.

Race starts at the Manayi Hall where Mandela delivered his last speech on 26 March, 1961

Comrades to tackle cheats THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has issued a warning to potential cheats at this year’s race. “We will take drastic action against any unsportsmanlike behaviour this year,” said CMA general manager, Chris Fisher. Running clubs across the country have this year raised their concerns and alerted the CMA to be on the lookout for transgressors. Some have gone as far as submitting names of potential cheats to be watched. Fisher reminded this year’s runners that additional technologies to highlight irregularities would be used to expose cheats. Fishers says officials will be on the lookout for the so-called “park and ride” gang who drive part of the route and run the rest. “If you don’t cross all the timing mats we will want to know why.

Transgressions vary from not running the full route distance, running with another entrant’s race number or supplying false information, all of which are considered unethical and unsportsmanlike behaviour by the CMA. “This year, thanks to tip-offs, we have names which we will watch carefully. Suspicious split times will also be investigated,” said Fisher. If suspected of cheating, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics will issue those runners with a notice to attend disciplinary hearings. Bans of up to two years can be handed down. Fisher believes the above measures to be in the best interest of both runners and the sport of road running. “The integrity of runners, who honourably complete the Comrades Marathon, needs to be safeguarded,” he said. - Supplied.

Nedbank Cup final will be ‘fireworks’ JERRY BARNES

Jerry Barnes Shooting the breeze THANKFULLY Maritzburg United was able to save their PSL status on the final day of the season. Last Saturday the Team of Choice outsmarted Jomo Cosmos 31 at Olen Park Stadium in Potchef stroom. United came from 10 down to beat Cosmos. As a passionate sports follower and supporter of all KwaZuluNatal teams, I thank the Maritzburg United family, players, management, sponsors, supporters and coaches you made us proud. United’s season or campaign went horrible wrong from day one because the foundations and plans for the season were not there. At first the technical staff, or the bench, were also suspect and could not trusted and United manage ment was forced to sort out their technical staff. Whatever happened is now behind us and forgotten. Let’s see United management now looking for quality players. They must sort out the technical bench if needs be and be ready for the next season, early. KZN soccer followers and especially Pietermaritzburg residents are tired of watching lukewarm performances from the team this arguably only play to avoid relegation. We want to see a different, motivated and Maritzburg United with a winning mentality in the new season.

Transport for Nedbank Cup final THE Pietermaritzburg branch of Orlando Pirates has arranged transport to Polokwane for the Nedbank Cup final on 28 May for the Pirates vs SuperSport United game. Transport leaves on 27 May at 10pm. The return fare is R600 per person. For more information contact Vukani Madonsela at 076 246 3644. - Supplied.

Pirates head coach Eric Tinkler has been lucky to keep his job until the end of the season.

O

N Saturday the country is expected to come to a standstill when the two PSL giants, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, lock horns in the Nedbank Cup final at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo. AmaBhakabhaka - Pirates - has been blowing hot and cold this season and were lucky to make it to the top eight on the final day of their campaign. Also, Pirates head coach, Eric Tinkler, has been lucky to keep his job until the end of the season. The Pretoria-based outfit took their game to the next level after they sacked Gordon Igesund and brought in the former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, and since then United look different and are one of the sides to watch in the PSL. Whatever the case, during the Ke Yona final, the current form, match statistics, history and previous scores are thrown out of the window. The final between the Soweto outfit and the Pretoria team will have all the ingredients for producing fireworks. Buccaneers captain Thabo Matlaba this week agreed that the Sea Robbers did not have a smooth campaign this season, but the final on Saturday will be a total different ball game. Matlaba says to be in the Nedbank Cup final will give them the chance of making fans happy. “Our league campaign was not convincing and most of our followers are not 100% happy. To win the final on Saturday will heal

their wounds and round off our current season with a trophy. It’s going to be tough, we respect our opponent, but we can’t allow them to spoil our plans,” said Matlaba. SuperSport United right
