MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

RIBUTES continue to pour in after the death of Khaba Mkhize (70), the former editor of the Echo newspaper. Mkhize, who was referred to as “the father of journalism” in Pietermaritzburg, died on Sunday at his home in Imbali Unit 13, after a long illness after suffering a stroke in 2008. Mkhize was the first black editor of the Echo and after 1994 became the first black SABC regional manager in KwaZulu-Natal. Maritzburg Echo sports contributor, Jerry Barnes, who worked under Mkhize in the nineties said the news of Mkhize’s death came as a shock. “I feel honoured to have worked under Baba Mkhize - he honed my writing skills and was like a father figure to me.”
Barnes said he became acquainted with Mkhize when he in high school. “I would visit the Echo offices to submit letters to the editor and opinion pieces. He encouraged me to continue writing and recognised my potential as a writer. “Mkhize is one of the people who shaped my journalism career even though he did not have any formal training as a journalist when he began.” Barnes said he will remember Mkhize as a unifier. “During the days of political turmoil where Pietermaritzburg was making headlines for being a city of violence, he tried his best to bring leaders of different parties together to end the violence.” Barnes’s words were echoed by Piwe Mkhize, who also worked with Mkhize at Echo for three years. “He was something of a Nelson Mandela in his ability to promote unity
Copesville not ‘coping’ CHELSEA PIETERSE and KAILENE PILLAY FOLLOWING recent violent protests in Copesville, residents at a community meeting on Saturday spoke about their service delivery woes. Copesville erupted into chaos last Thursday night with protesters burning tyres, blockading roads, cars stoned and another car overturned. The protests started shortly after a community meeting in Copesville earlier on Thursday evening. For three hours, some 200 people protested on Copesville Drive and soon infiltrated the suburb. Residents had to lock their homes and remain indoors. Provincial police spokesperson Major
Thulani Zwane said 12 cars were stoned and a case of public violence was registered at Mountain Rise police station. He said the Public Order Policing Unit, SAPS Mountain Rise and the Crime Intelligence Unit were out in full force on Thursday evening, but no arrests were made. The dissatisfied residents said they took to the streets to express concerns over service delivery. One resident said they were left without electricity for three days last week, while others were without water due to water meter thefts. Following Thursday’s protest, another meeting was organised on Saturday afternoon, however, few attended. Pastor Lucky Naicker, who chaired the
in diversity, tolerance and peace. The recognition he got for this role was evident in the many awards he received and visits from the foreign media who interviewed him.” He recalled how at one stage, Mkhize turned the then Natal Witness newsroom into a kind of television studio, “Foreign television crews would flock to oKwaZulu-Natal to cover the political confrontation between the United Democratic Front and Inkatha supporters. There was never a time when I felt like he was the boss, he loved us.” In a statement issued by the presidency, President Jacob Zuma also paid tribute to Mkhize. “Mkhize played a pivotal role in the coverage of the violence and promotion of peace in repression against the media. He received death threats but continued with his work with bravery and dedication. We respect him for his
promotion of freedom of information and expression, and for his use of the media as an instrument of promoting freedom, human rights and democracy.”
The family of Mkhize are still coming to terms with his death. Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, daughter Nobuntu said this has been a traumatic time for the family. “The family is still trying to come to terms with the loss. We are shocked because the doctors had given him a clean bill of health, his condition had stabilised and he seemed okay.” Nobuntu described Mkhize as a loving father who always preached the spirit of Ubuntu, even at home. “He was always eager to help the poor and to improve the lives of black people during the era of apartheid when Pietermaritzburg was engulfed by political wars. He was an intelligent man and the family will miss him.” Mkhize will be buried tomorrow following a service at the Edendale Lay Ecumenical Centre at 10am. He is survived by his wife Khwezi, three children and three grandchildren. Hamba kahle Khabazela kaMavovo.
meeting, said he was “disappointed” by how few Copesville residents were present. “Copesville is going through a crisis and we need intervention, but there seems to be no relief in sight.” Naicker said he had met Mountain Rise station commander Brigadier Boxer Pilly on 1 July and told him the community was in “dire need of intervention”. “I asked for Copesville’s satellite police station to be opened after being closed for five years.” Naicker said the station was opened the night of his meeting with Pillay, but he saw it had been closed on Saturday afternoon. “We find ourselves in the same predica ment we have been in for five years now, and it is unacceptable. “Copesville suffers rape, taxi violence, and house robberies and children and
women get mugged on their way to school and work, resulting in injuries, the destruc tion of buildings, [and] sometimes death.” A Copesville resident at the meeting, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he had lived in the area since he was seven and it was “a terrible place to live”. “People are stealing, robbing and break ing into our homes. We need a neighbour hood watch. We need more policing. Please help us,” he said. Pillay told those at the meeting he believed Thursday’s protesters were mostly young people protesting about the lack of electricity. He said electricity theft in Copesville was a problem. “Whole areas are pitch black and this is ideal for criminals.” In addition, over 300 water meters had been stolen for the copper. He said the spate of crime was suspect
ed to be youngsters hooked on whoonga. Pillay said the police station in Copesville was a sore point for many. “The structure of the station is practically falling apart. “We cannot access radios because there isn’t always electricity and there has to be more than two officers at the station otherwise we become sitting ducks. “We have limited manpower, so instead of putting police officers at the station, we suggest having two in a police vehicle constantly patrolling.” He said the pending local elections have also presented challenges and other areas need policing too. He suggested the station be open from 7am to 7pm with a vehicle patrolling at night. He also suggested a WhatsApp group be started, but said this can be discussed at a future meeting.

SUNDUZI Mayor Chris Ndlela has asked Pietermaritzburg pastors to pray for the upcoming city leadership. Ndlela, who is about to exit the mayoral position, was speaking outside the city hall on Saturday where pastors and hundreds of residents converged in a city wide prayer ahead of the local government elections on 3 August. Pietermaritzburg’s leadup to the polls has been marred by political deaths – particularly in the ANC with the most recent incident being the attempted murder of Ward 10 candidate, Nkosinathi Gambu. Gambu had a narrow escape last Tuesday when assailants open fire on him in KwaPata location. Ndlela said it was not easy being in a position of power and that the upcoming city council needed all the support it can get. “I will always treasure the support I received from churches in the city during my term as the mayor of Msunduzi, but I want to urge you to continue praying for the upcoming city leadership. Speaking from experience, I can safely say they will need all the support they can get, they have a tough task ahead,” said Ndlela. Pastor Neville Sewlall said the prayer was organised by PMB for Jesus, a city church body made up of different congregations. “We started with a 21day fast and prayer. We have had series of other prayers, but felt we needed to invite various denomination leaders to pray for an end to the political killings, lawlessness and environmental issues like the current drought.” He said the prayer was a tool to encourage people to come together despite their differences.
Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela (middle) receives a Bible and prayer pledge from Pastor David Peters (left) and Pastor Neville Sewlall.

ments and abilities and reminded him that he is representing the country at the prestigious event. “You have been blessed and brought joy and happiness to us it would be a crime not to assist you. “You will be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s most talented people, so celebrate every second of it,” said Bhamjee. Luthando was invited by the CaminoArtes Association and will spend six days in an intensive workshop until 30 July where he will be exposed to performance, technique, styles and music theory. He will also participate in master classes and ensembles. The workshop is being hosted by Dr Federico Sheppard, director of the CaminoArtes Association and Dr Rene Izquierdo, associate professor of classical guitar at the University of Wisconsin, Mil waukee. As part of the workshop, Luthando will also perform for the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Luthando is a selftaught guitarist who learnt to play the guitar at the age of seven by listening to CDs and watching YouTube instruction videos. He joined Epworth last year in order to benefit from its music programme. “As uMgungundlovu District Municipality we are proud to be associated with him and recognise such great talent. This gesture is befitting especially in Mandela Month, and the love Madiba had for children. “As the district we want to see our youth be come role models, and urge our children to stay in school, live healthy lifestyles and stay away from drugs and other illegal activities,” said Bhamjee.

Umgungundlovu search for gospel talent
ECHO
NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com
T
HE hunt for Umgungundlovu’s gospel music talent in the battle of all seven municipalities is about to begin! Auditions are scheduled to take place at the Winston Churchill Theatre on 9 August, the organiser of the competition, Sithembiso Ndlovu of Ogatsheni Entertainment said the talent search is a brainchild of uMgungundlovu in his presence, a gospel music concert that has been taking place in Msunduzi for the past six years. “The winner of the talent search gets an opportunity to share the stage with some of the big gospel names in the country. “Last year’s winners shared the stage with
the likes of Benjamin Dube, Ntokozo Mbambo and Andile kaMajola,” said Ndlovu. Last year, the competition was won by The Revelation, a group from Mooi River under the Mpofana municipality. Ndlovu said the competition is open to all upcoming gospel musicians from seven municipalities under Umgungundlovu District Municipality. “The talent search is open strictly to gospel musicians, if you are a group, solo artist or a duet and you think you have what it takes to impress the judges you are more than welcome to come and audition. “The aim of the competition is to uplift local talent and also give them a chance to share the stage with bigger artists to give them exposure.” The overall winner will walk away with a recording contract and R5000 cash. Entry is free and auditions will start at 8am but hopefuls are encouraged to get to the venue an hour early to register. The judging panel will include Ga Ndlela who scooped the 2015 SABC Crown gospel award for best song writer.

Msunduzi ready to host local elections NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media 24.com
W
ITH less than a week to the local government elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in uMgungundlovu district says it is all systems go for 3 August despite concerns around political violence. IEC Senior Outreach and Training Officer Gugu Memela said security precautions are being taken to ensure violence does not affect the ballot. “Hot-spot areas have been identified, but measures rest with SAPS as they are our key stakeholder when it comes to safety and security before, during and after elections, up to submission of results,” said Memela. One of the areas that has been identified as a hot spot is Sobantu, under Msunduzi. Memela confirmed that in their voters roll that has been certified, they have 340 998 registered voters in the 235 voting stations under Msunduzi. This has increased from the 218 000 voters in 2011. She said staff working on election day have been appointed and training has been
provided. She said even though they experienced problems with shortages of stationery over the registrations weekends they do not foresee any problems on election day. “Delivery of the material needed has started with the exception of the sensitive material that will be delivered later on this week. “We will have enough ballot papers for all stations as all
voting stations will be given 100% of their ballots as per the number of registered voters. “Extra ballots will be kept by the area manager and the rest will be in satellite warehouses,” she said.

FROM PAGE 18 Memela warned voters not to take any pictures in the voting booths. “Voters should not take a picture of the ballot after voting and should not write anything on the ballot booth. They should ensure they fold the three ballots, which are stamped, before inserting them ballot box.” A total of 12 parties will be on the ballot paper - this will exclude the National Freedom Party after the Electoral Court decision to exclude the party in the elections. The party failed to meet the payment deadline for elections. Memela said special votes will be administered to those who were approved, and will not be allowed to vote at their voting station on election day. “Special voters applied and the window period was between 10 June to 8July. Therefore special votes will be administered to those who were approved for either a home visit or station voting. Only people who are physically infirmed and those who will not be in their voting areas on 3 August qualify for this special programme.” Special voting days allocated for the municipal elections are 1 and 2 August. Memela said this means that if you are away from your
voting district from 1 to 3 August you forfeit your vote in the 2016 municipal elections. Voting on 1 and 2 August will be from 8am to 5pm and on 3 August from 7am to 7pm. Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said violence hot spots will be closely monitored. “We have identified hot spots and potentially unstable areas that will be closely monitored. We will be working with various police departments to ensure the elections run smoothly.” Ngobese said a special task team that will work with the Hawks has been formed to deal with politically related cases.
In Msunduzi there are eight political parties contesting at district council level, 12 for the municipal council level and there are 10 Independent candidates. This means that there will be three ballot papers …

How to make a mark First, ensure that the ballot you received is stamped by the IEC official. A voter may only make ONE mark in the box next to party or individual candidate of your choice. You must just be careful not to let your mark touch the walls of the box as this will confuse counters when your mark overlaps to other candidates or parties. You can mark with a cross, tick or any other clear symbol, just as long as your intention is clear to those who will be counting. If you have made a mistake the voter may notify the official who will then cancel the ballot and give you another one. Ensure that you fold your three ballots and put them in the ballot box that will be pointed out to you by the ballot box and/or booth controller.

Ecofriendly tips for the home to save energy • Slashing electricity bill without compromising aesthetics HAVING the right lighting is a crucial element of successful interior design. Lighting, however, also has one of the biggest impacts on energy consumption, considering the fact that lighting accounts for one fifth of the world’s total electricity consumption. Maintaining a comfortable, elegant environment requires the use of gentle lighting. Home owners who use traditional energy-saving bulbs to achieve this, often discover that the light from those
bulbs can be too white, leading to the lighting interfering with decorative details, which are then not properly highlighted. Philips’ master LED spot MV is ideal for creating attractive and inviting surroundings, while also increasing the amount of light users can obtain. In addition, these lights reduce energy consumption by about 80%. • Greater wattage does not equal brighter lighting People often purchase 3W LED lamps instead of 1W LED lamps, thinking
that the higher wattage automatically means you get a brighter light output. This is a hang-over from a recent past, where the only way to increase brightness was to increase the watts. LED lighting sources are, however, much more efficient at converting watts to lumens. This means that LED sources can consume the same number of watts, but differ significantly in the amount of light they create. • LED bulbs last longer Besides being a more energy efficient lighting source (a traditional bulb uses six times more energy to produce the
same lumen output as an LED bulb), LED lamps also last longer. This means people can avoid the hassle associated with frequently changing light bulbs. Moreover, this significantly reduces waste, while saving users money in the long term. The lifetime of an LED light source can be up to 10 times longer than that of traditional light sources, since a conventional bulb has a lifetime of about 2 000 hours, while Philips LED lighting has a lifetime up to 20 000 hours. - Supplied.
How does this translate in terms of shower water use? If we assume that individuals shower for an average of five minutes, this could translate to a savings in shower water use of 130 litres per household, which is 3 900 per month and 46 800 per year, if every family member showers daily. If we scaled this up to a city with a population of one million people, the savings per year are staggeringly high. Water usage reduced if outlets were fitted with ecoproducts If all water outlets in a home were fitted with ecoproducts, the water usage would be reduced by at least 60%. Ecofriendly shower head saves
Halve your water bill with an ecoshower head WITH the local and global spotlight on drought and watersaving measures, South Africans are proactively committing them selves to cutting down water usage. An average household of four using traditional taps and shower heads conserv atively consumes around 1 000 litres of water a day, which translates to 30 000 li tres a month, and 360 000 litres a year. This is according to David Cooper, managing director of Hansgrohe, who says that statistics about water scarcity are easy to find, and ecosmart technology is on the rise.
While there has been a big move towards fitting ecosmart technology, Simon Gear, an environmental commenta tor, says more South Africans should consider making the switch. He says the fact that water is still cheap stops consumers from making it a big focus. According to Gear, at some point in the future, the cost of water will rise dramati cally. He says that once this happens, we are likely to see more consumers making their home’s water supply more ecofriendly. Up to 47% of the world’s cities face peri odic water crises. In 2025, demand for fresh
water will overtake supply in South Africa. Cut down water consumption As we all know, South Africa is currently experiencing a severe drought following the El Niño climate cycle that impacts global weather patterns. With this has come water restrictions. An entrylevel ecoshower head uses 7,5 litres per minute, compared to a conven tional shower head that starts at 14 litres a minute. So by installing an ecofriendly shower head, homeowners will cut their water consumption, as well as their water bill, substantially.
LED lighting sources are more effi cient at converting watts to lumens. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
costs The recommended retail cost of an entry level ecoshower head, for example, is R225. For a family of four, it would cut water use from showering by around 46,4%. If water is charged at, say R15,87 per kilolitre, the cost would be recouped within about three months. After that, there would be ongoing savings. “Making sure your house is geared to use water as economically as possible is an excellent starting point to becoming waterwise. “It will stand you in good stead both as a committed social citizen and as a costsavvy consumer,” said Gear.

Breaking down your home’s makeover into small decorating projects is an inexpensive way to create something beautiful out of the mundane. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
THE diversity of South Africa’s design industry is good news for cashstrapped households who now have inexpensive options to freshen up their homes in a makeover. Monique Nel, interior designer and showroom manager, as well as graduate of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE) and Design School Southern Africa (DSSA), explains. According to Stats SA, South Africans now have less disposable income in their hands to spend on luxuries. This is due to the Core Inflation Rate in the country increasing by 5,5% in April, compared with the same month the previous year. A makeover of your home is likely to be at the bottom of your list of priorities when compared to paying off a home bond, vehicle finance, rising food costs, school fees, etc. The list is endless. However, this needn’t be the case. After all, our homes should be a sanctuary from the madness of the world and a space that is reflective of our person alities, ideals and ambitions. The good news is that the present state of interior design in South Africa embraces creativity and a diversity that few other countries can boast. Our groundbreaking design implementations have fused a new energy into the industry. Mushroom ing cultural nodes and rising markets have cemented more options for the consumer to invest in budget

friendly fixes for an instant update of their homes. Breaking down your home’s makeover into small decorating projects is an inexpensive way to create something beautiful out of the mundane. “I am currently undergoing the same process within my own home and decided to start with my bedroom. Inspired by raw elements, I went in search of neutral coloured pallets, exposed wooded furniture, roughly woven baskets and rugs, beautiful natural linens and succulent plants,” said Nel. She added: “Half the fun was shopping around to find the best prices for each item, and I picked up beautiful elements that were within budget. “I do, however, splash out on one feature piece when designing a room and in most cases this would be my wallpaper. “Another trick is to upcycle and put old and new items together. Use what you have and add to that. You’ll be amazed at what a lick of paint can do,” said Nel. Nel says that when redecorating your home, one should always bear in mind the family’s lifestyle. “Don’t over think and over accessorise but rather just keep it simple. Start with the basics and add some signature pieces to give the room personality. “By adding just a few touches of quaintness or eccentricity with your accessories and artwork, you would have created your ideal space,” she said. — Supplied.

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE LOCAL government elections are around the corner and instead of being excited about future leaders, who will spearhead service delivery, we are mourning and worried which local political leader will die next. Centuries of hard work and sacrifices, fighting against colonialism and apartheid, have been worthy of all the praise, and our history will always be relevant. But what are we to make of mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters who have died for daring to stand up for the parties in their respective wards in KwaZulu-Natal? Still, can the political and economic history of this country be divorced from the unfolding incidents of political slaying of our political hopefuls at community level? I argue that the same political and economic history that the mass anti-apartheid movement, led by the ANC, was about, is still responsible for the unhealthy contest for political posts due to the general urgent need
Politics of the stomach for economic emancipation. What we have feels like the law of the jungle. It is supposed to be a guided and engineered process towards economic emancipation. It is supposed to be a normal next phase of struggle. The political phase was sealed in 2004 when the first democratically elected black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, took office. But that was just the beginning. The second phase of struggle is not being well addressed. The struggle for jobs and the contest for such is higher than the opportunities for social and economic emancipation of people who enjoy political freedom. It cannot be surprising then that the 2016 local government election has been marred by allegations of lists that get changed and interfered with to accommodate cronyism and nepotism. This on its own says a lot about the manner in which the second phase of our struggle against the consequences of colonialism and apartheid is being
handled in a post-apartheid South Africa. Who ushers our people out of poverty, lack of economic growth and self-actualisation? Strides are being made, but certainly they are on the inadequacy side. Ugly as it may be the violence that occurs in the taxi industry, as contests for routes persist, and the killing of education professionals in the teaching profession amid the selling of posts, and now the bloody contest for political posts at local government level, do not happen by coincidence. A glorious political struggle that united and synthesised our common political purpose is now being fast surpassed by the more urgent concerns of the politics of the belly. Where does this leave us as a people? How does this situation define our present and future prospects? Needless to say, it is undemocratic and despicable to include people, who were not elected by ordinary people at grass-roots level in local government lists, that infuriate people and stir up
controversial unrest. Are we left with a sense of false hope - false hope because the politics of the stomach is selfish and defies norms and the rules of engagement at social and community level, our political formations included. False hope because the multi-party scenario of our country makes it easy for political contests to degenerate to the politics of the stomach, of careerism and economic opportunism, as opposed to merit, competence and effective representation in the halls of power. Pro-ANC political hegemony that defined the country’s voting pattern may not last for as long as we may have hoped if such rival political players in the EFF, DA, IFP, etc., continue to exhibit the capacity to capitalise on the weaknesses of the ruling party, and this is both bad and good for South Africa. The threat of the demise of political hegemony is good because multi-party democracy is supposed to encourage a culture of accountability,
transparency and an opportunity to replace ineffective, stagnant or counterproductive political leadership at all levels. The death of political harmony is bad because the political will to implement service delivery projects may be politicised, weakened, derailed or stalled by a lack of political harmony or hegemony that we have known. Too much political posturing and bickering undermine efficient handling of bread-and-butter issues, e.g. providing roads and transport services, social welfare services, houses, water, electricity, recreation, jobs, etc., to previously disadvantaged communities. When people choose unorthodox methods and the jungle route in dealing with their economic challenges, then there will be “senseless” killings as the economy fails to divert their attention to other diverse areas of self-actualisation, job creation or economic emancipation. • Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.
focus point today). The focus for today will be how democracy, which is supposed to provide equality in society, has created its own inequalities. After 22 years of democracy I think it is only now we realise that maybe democracy wasn’t the way to go. The issue with democracy is that it favours the favoured (capitalism), which generally means that those who were favoured by the economic system remain favourable and it has also created a few black elites. However,
democracy has not done justice for the majority of South Africans who are born and raised in poverty and are competing with the minority of South Africans who had a bit of a head start in the competition, competing for the same job, the same seat at university and even for funding from NSFAS as we fail to gather documents that prove our poverty. Modern democracy lacks elements of restorative justice, elements of restoring human dignity and only then can we start discussing issues of equality.
Equality in a democracy
Anele Mngadi
THE term “democracy” is broad, no one explanation can fully discuss what a democracy is, however, the most basic underlying idea of democracy is equality, but equality within its own context is an ambiguous term in this case. Does democracy offer equality of opportunity or equality of outcome? Should the South African democracy provide equality of opportunity or equality of outcome? The difference between the two is simple, equality of opportunity is when we enter a competition we are
asked the same question and given the same amount of time to answer (seems fair, right?) The problem is that we speak different languages and we are asked in a language that favours one person and we don’t understand, but we are expected to answer in the same amount of time as the home language speaker, that’s equality of outcome – that expectation that we all answer a question we cannot understand (which is what is happening in the education system, but this is not the

Primary school donated mobile library
Greenhill Primary School was beneficiary NICOLE JOHN >>news@myecho.co.za

REENHILL Primary School was recently the beneficiary of a mobile library, courtesy of Standard Bank and Ahmed Motala from the New Africa Education Foundation. Greenhill Primary pupils come from communities which do not have access to a library. Principal Irshan Rajcoomar said at the handover that they are overjoyed with the donation as it will provide pupils with good reading skills. “We are committed to raising the quality of education for every child and help them reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances. Your donation makes our vision a reality and further assists us to ensure that every child is literate,” he said. Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Chris Ndlela applauded the donation

35 made by the sponsors and encouraged them to continue supporting education in the city. “When you are educated you have a chance to become everything you want to be. You know that you have to work hard for things that you want and then treasure them when you get it. “Education is the only vehicle that can make you a better person. The doors have been opened for you to be able to prosper,” he said. Guests at the handover were treated to plays, poems and reading recitals by Greenhill Primary pupils who showed tremendous talent, even at their young age. Pupils as young as five rendered items with the programme director of the event a pupil as well. This mobile library can be wheeled from one classroom to another, which makes it easily accessible to all pupils. Motala, who has been instrumental in getting mobile libraries for many KZN schools, said the power of books should never be underestimated. “Books are a luxury for most schools and I think we have chosen the right school because we can see the hard work and dedication of the teachers. “We each have a responsibility to make the nation literate, starting at the most important phase, the foundation phase,” he said.

More power than ever the new smart Brabus W
ITH 80 kW of power, the new smart Brabus is among the sportiest vehicles in its segment. Alongside the powerful turbo engine, is the Brabus Performance sports suspension with special ly adapted ESP®, the sports power steering and sporty configuration of the twinamic dualclutch transmission with Race Start function. The vehicle also comes as standard with a sporty look both inside and out. Available in fortwo and forfour versions, these new smart Brabus models will be in MercedesBenz smart dealer showrooms from December 2016. Anyone for a spot more driving enjoy ment? The new smart Brabus models are more powerful than any previous standard smart. Rated power and maximum torque is 80 kW at 5750 r/min and 170 Nm at 2000 r/min respectively. The smart Brabus fortwo
delivers a sporty level of performance, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds, while the smart Brabus forfour boasts a top speed of up to 180 km/h. The more powerful turbo engine is not the only technical highlight. The sporty perform ance is due also to the following extensive modifications: ∙ The fuel pressure has been raised by two bar. The air supply to the engine has been optimised. ∙ The springing/damping of the Brabus Performance sports suspension are 20% firmer than the Brabus sports suspension, with the antiroll bar on the front axle reduc ing the roll tendency by nine percent, while the ESP® has been specially adapted. ∙ The sportstuned DirectSteer system with speedsensitive power assistance and variable steering ratio comes
with a specially increased return torque for the smart Brabus. This means that the steering gives even stronger feedback on the current grip status of the tyres, thereby improving the commu nication between driver and vehicle. This allows better control over the vehicle while making enhanced driving enjoyment. ∙ With an up to 40% faster response time and shorterlegged ratios than in the 66 kW model, the twinamic sixspeed dualclutch transmission is configured for sporty performance. It also features a Race Start function, which automatically sets the optimal rpm and clutch slip for maximum acceleration from rest. To use the Race Start function, the driver simply needs to release the brake pedal after previously depressing it and flooring the accelerator.
∙ The Brabus sport exhaust system has been optimised in terms of backpressure. The sporty top models of the latest smart generation stand out visually through their matt grey rear diffuser insert with chrome look tailpipe trims as well as their grey, high sheen and matt painted Brabus Monoblock IX lightalloy wheels. The smart fortwo comes with Yokohama sports tyres of size 185/50 R 16 H (front) and 205/40 R 17 H (rear). The smart forfour is shod with 185/45 R 17 H (front) and 205/40 R 17 H (rear). All smart Brabus models come as standard with a lockable glove compart ment, the Cool & Audio package and the proximity warning function. The smart Brabus fortwo and forfour also sport a pano ramic roof ex factory. The new highend equipment line Brabus Xclusive makes for even greater sporty elegance in the city. The special features: ∙ Brabus sport seats with upholstery in perforated nappa leather/black leather with

specific grey topstitching ∙ Brabus dashboard in leather look/black fabric Brabus instrument cluster with cockpit clock and rev counter ∙ Brabus floor mats ∙ Xclusive badges in mirror triangle and Bpillar The Brabus Xclusive also comes as standard with LED & Sensor package, heated seats for driver and front passenger, while the smart forfour Brabus Xclusive features readyspace rear seats with a removable car go box. Longstanding cooperation: smartBra bus GmbH smartBrabus GmbH is a joint ven ture of smart and Brabus and stands for au tomotive refinement at the highest level. In the last 12 years, over 60 000 customers have opted for products that were developed or produced in cooperation with Brabus engineers. Supplied.

Elite coupé cruiser >> Brian Bassett experiences taste and discernment in a coupé
S
IR Stirling Moss, the great racing driver, once asked the question: “Why do people buy coupés?” He felt they are restricted to two doors, which are usually wide to facilitate rear seat access, and so exit is difficult in parking lots. He then went on to answer his own question by saying: “Coupés are among the world’s best looking cars and a tribute to their owner’s taste and discernment.” Enter the BMW 420d Coupé. In 2013 BMW discovered the joy of even numbers and displayed the 420 Coupe at the Detroit Motor Show. We were told that it would replace the 3-Series Coupé and it was likely that there would be any further models in the range. BMW however, could not resist competing with the Audi A5 Coupe Hatch and a four-door 4-Series Grand Coupé followed soon Styling This is a really good looking car
Ungaphila impilo ende ngama-ARVs By Wendy Waka-Khumalo “Emuva kokutholakala ukuthi ngineGciwane leSandulela Ngculazi, ngatshelwa ukuthi amasosha ami omuzimba angaphansi kuka-200, ngabe sengiqaliswa imishanguzo yeGciwane leSandulela Ngculazi. Ngangisebenzisa imishanguzo ebizwa ngokuthi i- Nevirapine (NVP), Stavudine (D4T) kanye ne-Lamuvodine (3TC). Ukuphuza le mishanguzo kwakungelula neze. Ngaba nezilonda emlonyeni, ngehla emzimbeni futhi ngangihlanza. Kwakungelula ukudla amaphilisi zonke izinsuku”, kusho uZama Mtshali (32) owesifazane ohlala e-Cato Manor, ngaphandle nje kwaseThekwini. Ukudla imishanguzo akulula neze, ikakhulu uma udla imishanguzo efana nama-ARVs. Ngokusho kuka Dkt Kolisa Dlamini, uDokotela ozimele waseThekwini: “Abanye abantu bakuthola kunzima ngenxa yokucwaswa uma bedla imishanguzo. Noma kunjalo, kubalulekile ukuqala ukudla imishanguzo ngokushesha ukuze kuvikelwe izinkinga ezingase zibe khona. Umuntu angagcina esegula kakhulu, ngenxa yezifo ezingosomathuba, ezifana nesifo sofuba.” Ukudla imishanguzo ngendlela kuye kube ying-
which turns heads as you drive by. At the front it is typically BMW, with a large, double kidney grill and swept back headlamps on either side, all underlined by a dark air intake flanked by two fog lamps. The ribbed bonnet flows into a raked windscreen, which guides the eye to a sloping roof. Our car came with a fitted sunroof, an optional extra but nice to have. The steeply sloping rear window and tailgate combine with wraparound tail lights to present a sleek profile. The design is complimented by serious rubber on its 19-inch light alloy wheels and in any parking lot it is, in the words of Moss, “a tribute to the owner’s taste and discernment”. Interior The interior of our car was finished in soft touch plastics and black leather. It is much like the 3-series interior, comfortable, solid and a very pleasant place to be. The control ergonomics are excellent. The instruments are clear and easy to read while driving. The main instrument cluster has four analogue displays, speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge, temperature, as

Imiphumela engemihle yokusebenzisa imishanguzo ingezinye zezizathu izidikibalisa abantu, abanye bagcine sebekhethe ukuyeka ukusebenzisa imishanguzo. Imishanguzo ibaphatha ngezindlela ezingafani abantu. Lemiphumela engemihle, nokho iya ngokuncipha njengoba imishanguzo yama-ARVs iqhubeka nokuthuthukiswa. Eminye imiphumela eyaye ibe ingozi ukuphazamiseka kokusebenza kwezinso kanye nesibindi, nakuba ingavamile. “Okwamanje asinalo ikhambi leGciwane leSandulela Ngculazi, ingakho sibagqugquzela abantu ukuthi abaqhubeka bedla imishanguzo yabo ngendlela. well as digital computer functions. The i-drive and its rotary selector are placed centrally and are easy to operate. The rear seats offer a surprising amount of space and can take two adults in comfort over long distances. For a large man like me it is still a bit of a scramble to get in and out but, once in you are well supported and do not feel in the least claustrophobic even though the rear windows do not open. Boot space is generous at 445 litres. The car we drove had front and rear parking sensors, which are these days essential. Safety and security The 420d has a range of safety features, including ABS with EBD, an occupant cell, the BMW restraint system, adaptive headlights, as well as driver and front passenger airbags and side bags integrated into the front seat backrests for the rear passengers. The car also has keyless entry and an alarm system. Performance The 420d has BMW’s four-cylinder, Twin Power Turbo diesel engine, which features Common Rail direct injection and variable turbine geometry. The engine puts out 135 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque. The eightspeed auto gearbox in our car changed swiftly and smartly; and is an obvious-

UDkt uDlamini uphinde wakhuluma ngokubaluleka kokusebenzisa ijazi lomkhwenyana. “Noma ngabe abantu sebeyayidla imishanguzo, sisabagqugquzela ukuthi baqhubeke basebenzise ijazi lomkhwenyana.” Ukusebenzisa ijazi lomkhwenyana kubaluleke kakhulu ukuze uvikele ukutheleleka ngokuphindiwe ngegciwane. Umthamo wegciwane kanye nendlela elakheke ngayo ayifani, ngakho ungase utheleleke ngokwehlukile kwaphathina wakho. Ukudla inimshanguzo ngendlela efanele kuyasiza ukuthi uvikele ukungasebenzi kahle kwemishanguzo egazini (Drug resistance). ly sophisticated system. 0-100 km/h comes up in around 7,5 seconds and, if you are in suicide mode, top speed is claimed at 240 km/h. Fuel consumption is difficult to predict in a fast car but, if you are over 50 and driving sensibly you should achieve around 5 l/100 km. The 4-series Coupe is wider and 45kg lighter than the 3-Series it replaced and also has a lower centre of gravity. Combined with a sharpened steering and the adaptive drive system, the car handles superbly on good roads and bad. Sport mode makes a real difference to performance. And throttle response is crisp and power delivery impressive. It cor-
ners well at speed and lives up to its fast image. Costs and competition There are 28 models in the 4-Series line-up. The 420d comes in at around R570 000 new, but don’t forget the demos and year-olds, or even two-yearolds. The car comes with a five-year or 100 000 km extendable maintenance plan, which covers everything but tyres, while BMW’s roadside assistance plan is excellent. It’s a buyer’s market at present so also look at Audi A5/SS/RSS, Mercedes C class coupé, Lexus RC and even the Ford Mustang. - Supplied.

>> Team travelled to Holland and were victorious JERRY BARNES IT looks like sky’s the limit for Young Natalians. A couple of weeks ago head coach Greg Nair’s team became league champions of the South African Indoor Football Association (Saifa) with another trophy. To top that the Natalians travelled to Holland and were victorious in a one-day tournament. Nair said his team was one of the best that competed in the off-season event in Amsterdam. “Without blowing my horn, these youngsters made me, our country and their city proud after winning the Pos Service Holland (PSH) tournament. It was the incentives for winning a Cup double last season, all expenses paid. My boys did well, we won the final 11-5 and the semi-final 10-4. Our guys displayed great skills and crowd were mesmerised by our quick passing game. We were treated as favourites of the event,” said Nair.
Young Natalians further earned two more awards. Their scoring machine, Sedwyn George, was voted player of the tournament and earned the best goal during the event. “It was a long-range shot from the centre line,” said Nair. Saifa president and law guru, Poobie Govindasamy said he hopes the trip was an eye-opener for the team and a plus for the country. “We are all happy for the team, they made us, the country and their parents proud. As Saifa officials were are pleased to see that indoor [futsal] was now growing in South Africa.”

Have you ever thought of the story behind an abandoned baby?
“I was raped by the father of my child. My mother told me I was not welcome in our house if I had another baby. I gave birth in the veld and left my baby there. I can’t even care for myself, how would I care for a child?” 18-year-old girl from Tembisa
Now you know, become part of the solution: Child abandonment shouldn’t be happening in a caring world. Help someone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy make informed and responsible decisions for their child and themselves, by calling 0800 864 658 or visiting www.crisispregnancy.org.za for information, options and support.
