MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to AIDS HELPLINE avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 0800-012-322 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful United we can reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. N ER24 medic, Lungelo Ntombela, recalled how he was attacked on Saturday night after he and his colleagues stopped to assist at a motor vehicle collision. Speaking to the Maritzburg Echo, Ntombela from Howick, said he was still shaken after being stabbed and assaulted when he and his colleagues came across a collision on Ohrtmann Road. “We were on our way to Northdale Hospital with two patients when we saw the collision and our first instinct was to stop and see if anyone was injured.” He said he remained in the ambulance with the two patients while his partners went to assess the incident. “My colleagues put up road cones, I don’t know what happened, but the next thing I heard one of the occupants from one of the vehicles involved verbally abusing my colleague, he was shouting ‘hey you white boy come over here, I’ll f*** you up’.” Ntombela said he then got out of the ambulance and went to intervene and that was when he was assaulted. “I got in between them to find out what the argument was about and this guy just punched me in the face. “I later established that my colleague had told them the police

Court appearance FOUR suspects appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after they were ar rested for assaulting an ER24 medic. Ivan Francis (54), Omega Nziman de (25), Shayden Francis (19) and Rakesh Saden (41) appeared briefly in court facing charges of assault. Their case was adjourned until 5 October. The state said it still needed to obtain their profiles, verify their addresses and there was still outstanding documentation to be obtained by the police. The four are facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, driving under the influence of alcohol as well as resisting arrest. According to a charge sheet presented at court, it is alleged the four attacked ER24 medic Lungelo Ntombela on Saturday night when he and his colleagues came across a collision on Ohrtmann Road. They allegedly stabbed him with a knife and hit him with a baseball and clenched fists. The state said it intends to oppose bail. Advocate Reshen Pillay, who was representing the four accused, told the court they said they required medical treatment since they were attacked on the night of the alleged incident. The four will remain in custody until their next appearance.

‘UKZN 11’ appear in court >> The 11 were part of a group of university students, who embarked on protest action and barricaded roads with rocks, rubbish and furniture NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com

A

TOTAL of 11 students from the University of KwaZulu- Natal, Pietermaritzburg campus, appeared in court last Friday facing three charges each. The students, who were arrested last Thursday following a violent standoff with the police, each face charges of public violence, failure to comply with police and interference with police work with two more charges to be added. The 11 were part of a group of university students, who embarked on protest action and barricaded roads with rocks, rubbish and furniture.

They are demanding free education following an announcement by minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande that universities and colleges can increase 2017 tuition fees by no more than eight percent. During their brief appearance in court, the state said it intends to oppose bail citing that the 11 posed a danger to current students and the university. The state said the 11 took part in an illegal demonstration after the university had obtained an interdict against protesting students. The state also said the students burnt property, including the Malherbe residence on Durban Road and restricted the fire fighters from getting to the

residence to put out the fire. Magistrate M. Boikhutso said the 11 will remain in custody until 30 September for their next court appearance. Upon hearing the court’s decision, fellow students, who had packed the public gallery, walked out and broke into song with their fists up. As they gathered outside court to discuss their next move, others could be heard saying there was nothing more they could do to reverse the court’s decision. Magistrate Boikhutso warned that the students should behave during court proceedings. “If they continue behaving in this manner, they will join their friends in the cells,” she said.

HREE Edendale addicts want to escape the clutches of whoonga and turn over a new leaf. Edwin Mazibuko (27), Siyabonga Mazibuko (27), and Scelo Ndlela (31) say they need help in battling their affliction. Municipal services have had to work extra hours to clean the streets after students strew rubbish in the streets, police are working overtime trying to address the students while taking the focus away from more serious crimes they could be spending their time on. Residents and many innocent people continue to get caught in the crossfire as the violence intensifies. Pupils at schools in and around the university are also at risk and parents going to fetch their children could be caught in the crossfire. WAZULU-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has urged women not to stay in abusive relationships, but to immediately seek help if they feel their lives are in danger. MEC Dhlomo was speaking at a prayer meeting held at Grey’s Hospital on Monday, 26 September to pay tribute to three fallen department employees, who were allegedly murdered by their partners. Sister Thabisa Daysen Doyisa, a midwife at Edendale Hospital was gunned down in her home in Naperville on 22 April, 28-year-old Nelisiwe Shelembe, a professional nurse from Grey’s Hospital was shot dead on 7 April while on her way to work and Ntokozo Molefe, a labour relations manager was stabbed to death on 6 March. Dhlomo said that it had been a wish of his to meet these families and help them find closure. He described health-care workers in general as “a gift from God, who minister in a wonderful way.” “When they die, even if their deaths are natural, it is always painful. It is even worse when their lives are taken by people who are supposed to love and protect them. The violence that is there in society, whenever you hear a woman has been raped, shot, or stabbed, it is usually men who are the perpetrators. To women out there if it concerns your life and you feel you are under threat, report it. Do not stay in an abusive relationship.” He also urged nurses to exercise care and compassion towards terminally ill patients, saying that affording them dignity may deliver them from spiritual pain, which may automatically result in relief from physical pain. “Damp-dusting windows in the wards should move towards ensuring that your patients are always in a dignified state. Wipe their face, apply petroleum jelly or another ointment, even when they die, it helps relatives cope better when they see that their loved ones were being looked after.” - Supplied.

18 years for avenging girl’s abuse T

WO young men who stabbed another to death because he had assaulted and abused his girlfriend, were each jailed for 18 years by a High-Court judge last Thursday. Judge Trevor Gorven said the murder of Linda Mlangeni of Sweetwaters by Andile Madlala (24) and Thembelani Nyawose (20), was a

“vicious, unprovoked attack”. He said at the time of the murder Mlangeni had been in bed and asleep. The court heard evidence that while Madlala, his girlfriend and Nyawose were sitting and drinking alcohol on the night of 16 March last year, Mlangeni’s girlfriend, Nobuhle Mngadi had arrived there. Her face was swollen and she told the trio that she had had an argument with Mlangeni and that he had assaulted her.

Judge Gorven said Mlangeni was subsequently “lured” out of his house under a pretext of making good what had happened with Mngadi. “The two of you were lying in wait for him and you attacked him and stabbed him on 17 occasions. The stab wounds penetrated the trachea, both lungs and his heart,” said the Judge. Judge Gorven said a mitigating factor in the case was the fact that it

was clear that Mlangeni had assaulted and abused his initimate partner, Mngadi, and said this was “something that happens far too often in society and also has to be stamped out”. However, no one was allowed to take the law into their own hands. He said while this was the motive for the killing it was “not justification”. Mlangeni’s murder had left his two young children without a father.

taking 13 hip-hop groups, 10 Kwaito artists and seven deejays to the semi-finals.” The semi-finals will be held on 29 October where the selected 30 will be competing against each other for the top three spots in the finals to be held in November. Impi, now in its sixth year, is a popular event on the city’s music calendar where renowned deejays battle it out on the decks in front of fans. This year the spotlight will be on local talent and the event is a fund-raiser for Community Chest to help feed destitute children. Gumede said the semi-finals will have a panel of celebrity judges and they are extending an invite to the public to be part of the audience. For more information, Gumede can be contacted on Whatsapp on 063 221 6886 or email fanotainment@gmail.com

TOTAL of 150 artists and deejays from Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas gathered at the Winston Churchill Theatre on Saturday for the Impi 2016 auditions. The auditions, which form part of the SA Music Conference that was held at the same venue in June, were organised by Fanotainment in conjunction with Lerumo Productions. Fano Gumede said the auditions were a success and they were happy with the turnout. “What we realised is that we have so much uncovered talent in Pietermaritzburg. We also noticed that we had many guys who we have never heard of in our city. “We were happy to see new faces and names coming to be part of this project. We are

VOX POP

ECHO

‘Maritzburg Echo’ reporter NOKUTHULA KHANYILE asked people what they think of the protest actions for the #FeesMustFall campaign currently taking place at universities throughout the country.

Baxolele Majikijela (25), Scottsville

Noluthando Mzolo (18), KwaShange

‘I think before demanding free education, students need to understand the state of our economy. We cannot compare South Africa to Germany. We are a Third World country and they are First World. Students should rather fight for quality educatio. We have poor education standards, which is prevalent in the majority of state schools. The fees must fall campaign might be for a good cause, but it has been hijacked by third forces. I know they’ll call me a counter revolutionary.’

Bongeka Zuma (21), Elandskop

‘The current protests are a disadvantage to students who want to study. The sad thing is these students don’t realise that by burning down infrastructures, universities will be forced to increase tuition fees to cover costs of the damages. There are students who would do anything for a chance to get an educa tion and there are others who have been afford ed that opportunity but pass up on it. It is sad because some parents sacrifice their life savings to send their children to university and they don’t appreciate it, instead they protest and forget the reason why they are at university.’

Nompumelelo Phungula (20), Gezubuso

‘If it were up to me, the students and the government would reach some agree ment to put an end to the ongoing protests interrupting universities. I think the sad thing for us, who would like to someday obtain degrees from UKZN is the infra structure that is being burnt. I don’t think two wrongs make a right. Students should try and resolve this in a civilised manner and not resort to hooliganism.’

Avela Khawula (22), Sweetwaters

‘I’m against the violent protests and the burning of university residences and vehicles. I’m sure the likes of Hector Peterson are turning in their grave. This is not what they fought for in 1976. Fellow black students are playing with this golden opportunity they have been given. I don’t understand how they will appreciate free education when they don’t even appreciate the government student financial aid scheme, I bet when they get free education they will find something else to protest about.’

‘I don’t like what is happening at our universities. Those are our brothers and sisters who are being shot by the police. They are being denied their basic right to free ed ucation. It’s time the president intervened and took seriously the plight of the students. The sad thing is they are also losing out on the time they should be investing in their books, especially now towards examina tion time.’

>> Miss SA Teen joins PMB modelling agency PHILANI MCHUNU

Former Miss SA Teen finalist teams up cy she wants to encourage upcoming models to compete on a national level. “I want to them to know that being from a small town should not limit them from entering national competitions. “I managed to become one of the three finalists in the Miss SA Teen. I was the face of Garnier from 2013 for three years. I modelled for big clothing retailers like the Hub, Jet, Mr Price and also worked with True Love magazine on fashion spreads. “I have also been a judge for some beauty contests and have also tried public speaking, they need to know that nothing is impossible,” she said.

ORMER Miss SA Teen first princess has joined a Pietermaritzburg modelling agency to help aspiring models. Lucky Mthembu (25), who was crowned first princess in Miss SA Teen in 2009, has now joined the up and coming Pietermaritzburg modelling agency, Intsha yoMzansi. Mthembu who was born in Hammarsdale but raised in Pietermaritzburg also entered the Miss South Africa pageant in 2012 and made it to the top 24. She said by joining this small agen-

The founder of Intsha Yomzansi Modelling Agency, Thandokuhle Ndlovu, said they are excited to have Mthembu on board. “I first meet her in 2010, a year after she entered the Miss SA Teen contest. A couple of weeks ago we got together and decided on this venture. She has been part of the agency for a while now, but in the background, she would come to our rehearsals and give professional advice to our models. I am happy to officially have her on the team to take the business forward.” Ndlovu said they are trying to organise a Pietermaritzburg Fashion Week.

“Pietermaritzburg is probably the only city without a Fashion Week, we want to change that. “We are putting together ideas to give local designers a platform to display their talent.” He said Intsha yoMzansi has showcased at the Vodacom Durban July for six consecutive years. “With both our experiences combined, we are taking this agency to greater heights,” said Thando. WHEN IS BABY READY AND HOW SHOULD YOU START SOLIDS?

Maritzburg ECHO

29 September 2016

Aurora Dezigns gives back

More often than not, feeding babies would be a far easier task if one would just allow it to be. The following are often used as indications that Baby is ready for solid foods. Be cautious and listen to Baby. Baby suddenly demands more bottle or breast feeds · Baby might simply need more milk, so first try to increase the number or length of feeds for at least a week – if still seeming dissatisfied, it might be time to introduce solids, unless there is another rational explanation, like teething or stress in the family. Everyone says baby is old enough · Most babies don’t need solids before six months, although there are exceptions – both younger and older. Milk is food, don’t forget. You must let baby take the lead in this one – it is his tummy, after all. Baby is teething · Teething often precedes interest in solid food, maybe because there is some connection! This notion confirms that there is a whole range of ‘correct’ ages to start feeding babies solids.

>> Kitchen giveaway for charities

Baby shows interest in your food · This will seldom happen before baby is ready to eat. Sometimes it’s more about the sensation of squelching food between the fingers, but eating is always more than just physical nutrition, so allow some measure of exploration at mealtimes.

A

URORA Dezigns is an established interior design company that specialises in contemporary kitchen and built-in cupboards designs. Their services extend much further than just built in cupboards and include: •Interior design •Kitchens •Built-in cupboards •Shop fitting •Granite, quartz ,concrete tops and many more specialised counter tops •Glass splash-backs •Home makeovers •Project managing Add-on services on offer are sandblasting, designer ceilings, tilling and electrical.

How to introduce solids guide · Offer first foods between milk feeds, when baby is a little hungry but not ravenous and is in a good, inquisitive mood. · Between 10h00 and 14h00 is the most optimal digestive time for first meals. · Offer only 1 to 2 teaspoons or cubes at a time, and wait to see if, over the next day, there are any adverse reactions. · Increase amount slowly, maybe by 1 teaspoon or cube a day every 3 to 5 days, until baby indicates that you should settle at a specific amount. · Introduce new foods one at a time so that you can readily identify problem foods and adverse reactions. · Add a second meal after about 4 to 6 weeks, and a third meal from 6 to 8 weeks later. Article supplied by Sister Lilian

The company also has an in-house interior designer to manage and guide complete design renovations. Aurora Dezigns endeavours to give back to the community on an ongoing basis and to this end, is giving away a kitchen valued at R200 000 to a charity in KwaZulu-Natal. Members of the public, and KZN charities, are called upon to either nominate a charity or nominate themselves, if they are a charity, for the R200 000 kitchen giveaway. The kitchen may be viewed at Liberty Midlands Mall centre court until 2 October. For more information, interested parties may contact Sharadia Ebrahim at 033 387 5714, 072 502 7952 or info@auroradezigns.co.za

HE 20 semi-finalists for the 2016 A Young Lady With Heart (YLWH) campaign spent Heritage Day at Liberty Midlands Mall encouraging shoppers to donate sanitary towels towards their campaign. The girls also did a flash mob outside Pick n Pay. They collected 500 packs of sanitary towels, however, more is needed so the public, businesses and organisations are asked to donate a pack to the campaign.

Arts bursaries for KZN students available

T

HE KZN Department of Arts and Culture is offering bursaries to students who want to pursue careers in jewellery design, fine art, graphic design, languages, performing arts, anthropology, restoration and conservation, and archival studies. The bursaries will cover full-time studies only at public higher education institutions, and cover tuition fees, meals or stipends, accommodation, and prescribed textbooks where necessary. Students are responsible for their own admission to a tertiary institution and accommodation within a university’s residence.

Youth with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Funds are limited and there is no guarantee that all applicants will be successful. Preference will be given those who pursue studies at institutions within KwaZulu-Natal. Bursaries will be awarded to those who choose to study at public higher education institutions, unless their chosen course is only offered at private institutions. Successful recipients will enter into a contract with the department for a number of years equivalent to the duration of the period of study. To qualify for the bursaries, students must possess a matric/

Grade 12 certificate, be between the ages of 18 and 35, and reside in KwaZulu-Natal. Students must also have a provisional acceptance letter from a public institution of higher learning, and willing to study courses in the fields indicated above. Students who are currently studying in the arts fields indicated above are also eligible to apply. To apply for the bursaries, students must fill out a bursary application form available from Operation Sukuma Sakhe war rooms, Department of Education district offices, municipality offices, and student funding offices at higher

education institutions. The advertisement and forms are also available to download from the KZN Arts and Culture website: www.kzndac.gov.za Students are advised to fill out application forms carefully and correctly. Last year, applicants submitted incomplete applications without the necessary documentation, such as a copy of their ID and proof of residence. Applicants also neglected to disclose information regarding family income, or the whereabouts and income of the second parent. The closing date for applications is 30 October. Arts and Culture MEC Bongiwe

Sithole-Moloi said: “With protests raging against university fees countrywide, it is of even greater importance that the youth are afforded as many opportunities as possible to advance their education. The department hopes that, through the awarding of these bursaries, it is able to assist those eager to realise their potential as artists and make a difference in our country.” - Supplied.

Protesting students nothing is owed to you, go out and earn it MY father-in-law made a very apt point during a chat about the ongoing university protests. Many of the students who are rioting for free education come from private high schools where they paid in excess of R100 000 a year in fees. Those who are poor maybe deserve as much help as they can get, but after their actions, they pretty much destroyed any sympathy one would have had for them. These students need to realise that even if free education is approved tomorrow, they still need buildings and libraries to study in. How about hunger strikes and tying themselves to poles to make a point, which will be even more effective?

I pose the question to them - if they want free education, are they also willing to work for nothing when they find employment? It baffles me how they expect something to be free, as well as being something of good quality at the same time. I have news for them - these two are mutually exclusive - are these our future doctors and engineers? Most of these students fail even to pass their courses and use rioting as a method to postpone exams. Nothing is owed to you. Go out and earn it like the rest of us did. What next, #TaxesMustFall? Lessons for men to be learnt I HAVE been following with interest the story of local policeman Riaan van Rensburg, charged with rape and attempted murder of a prostitute. In his defence, as reported in The Witness, Van Rensburg told of how he had fought against three armed hooligans who had tried to hijack a woman and child in Randburg in January. If it is true, the story proves that he is a caring and sympathetic man, the kind we desperately need in this violent society. The truth of his alleged shenanigans with the prostitute, however, will be determined by the court. What is happening to Van

Rensburg can happen to any man. I am sure he will regret this for as long as he lives. I hope men in Pietermaritzburg will learn a lesson from his experience. Leaving our cosy home and lying to our loving wives, girlfriends, partners and families to solicit gratification from prostitutes is playing with fire. I hope Van Rensburg’s wife, family and friends will forgive him, whether he is found guilty or not. It takes a strong man not to fall and be tempted in these days of Sodom and Gomorrah. BONGANI E. #Fees2017

ANELE MNGADI

THE Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande seem to believe that the protests were an already arranged programme, regardless of what his announcement would have been the protesting would have continued as an act of anarchism. His announcement however had a lot of grey areas hence some students believe that he said nothing at all, looking at a few key areas of the announcement: university councils should decide on the fee increment but should not be exceed eight percent. The poor and the “missing middle”

Mother of the nation MONDLI MAKHANYA

I

SN’T it funny that the biggest talking point in the past two weeks - other than #FeesMustFall campaign and the amusing frustration of Kaizer Chiefs fans — has been the timeless beauty of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. When her face was flashed on South African TV screens during her birthday celebration, social media went berserk. The memes were wonderful. The most popular was one that juxtaposed her picture with one of a much younger 54-year-old minister who allegedly used to fill up her tub with Smirnoff when she took a bath. The following morning, the conversation was all about how she has managed to remain so beautiful. It is as if South Africa has begun a new love affair with Madikizela-Man-

dela, who in the past has been the cause of division, the target of derision, the object of adoration and, in many instances, of worship. As she turns 80, there seems to be an overwhelming outpouring of love for Madikizela-Mandela. It is an outpouring that seeks to blot out the controversial parts of her public life. This amnesia seeks to highlight only the heroic parts of life. The new love affair reflects the complex relationship South Africa has had with the Mother of the Nation, as she became known while Nelson Mandela was in prison. Although she was a familiar figure in political circles and among those who read the so-called black press, the world was introduced to a young Madikizela-Mandela during the Rivonia Trial in the early sixties. Even then, there was a fascination with her

with annual income of R600 000 will not be subjected to the fee increment, students who qualify for NSFAS will also be exempt from the increment. One of the biggest mistakes made by the minister is to treat NSFAS as a tactic to counteract the issue of fees, being incognisant to the fact that NSFAS is a loan, thus saying that the poor will pay all the money they do not have now later, including interest, now how is that a move towards free education. NSFAS itself is a flawed system, in 2015 NSFAS required R51 billion

from government to operate effectively but only received R8.3 bn showing that not all the poor are covered by NSFAS to begin with. As we wait for the fees commission to submit its recommendations on the sustainability of free education – the rich must pay, however, as an act of good faith and a promise to students, the minister should have announced a fee decrees for the poor and the so called “missing middle” if we are moving towards free education than I think we can all agree that fee hikes are a move in the wrong direction. Secondly the fight is for an Afrocentric curriculum that speaks to the African student, a curriculum that address African problems and assist students with skills needed in Africa.

Thirdly is to hold university management accountable for the promises made during the #FeesMustFall2015 that by this time have not been actualised or forgotten such as the promise to insource university service workers. Buildings are not burning for the fun of it, the shutdown is not because students are lazy to go to school, the goal is not to be ungovernable. The cause is just. A luta continua. “Those at the opposite end of progress will be judged by harshly by history” - Unknown.

beauty. Photographers scrambled for pictures of the regal wife of the most famous trialist. It was almost as if the world was distracted from her pain as she attended a trial that she knew could make her a young widow or, at best, a single mother for a long time. The imprisonment of Mandela and his comrades thrust some of their spouses into leadership roles. While some were reluctant, others, such as MadikizelaMandela and Albertina Sisulu, accepted the thorny crowns. Over the next three decades, they would evolve from being the wives of trialists to being leaders in their own right. They became the rallying point of a revolution that had lost its leadership to prison, exile and death. The apartheid government reacted brutally. They were banned, detained and generally subjected to torturous harassment. South Africa’s relationship with the two women was an interesting one. Sisulu was the maternal mother, who was treated as an elder in the internal resistance movement.

Although she had proved her leadership mettle and demonstrated great political acumen, Madikizela-Mandela was always the glamorous firebrand. There was as much reaction to her beauty as there was to her powerful and defiant oratory. The focus on her looks was never disrespectful or sexist. It was during this period that she became known as the Mother of the Nation. Only she could utter the immortal exhortation that “with our boxes of matches and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country”. That phrase earned her love among the oppressed, and virulent hatred on the other side. The internal and external leadership were forced to scramble to distance themselves from the statement. Many of those who adored her didn’t know what to do with their love for her during the scandals of the late eighties, nineties and early 2000s. Many found excuses for her to justify their unconditional love. Those who were angry were

always drawn back to her. Even during her divorce from Mandela, emotions were split between the two. The only time that there has been concessions about her ageing was during the mourning period for her former husband in 2013, but then came the rejoinders that it was because she was in emotional pain. But the topic was there. There have been many birthday tributes to Madikizela-Mandela in recent weeks. Tributes to her courage, her wisdom, her leadership and her resilience. But political correctness has prevented those paying tribute from celebrating her beauty. Such a narrative imprisons Madikizela-Mandela in a cubicle that says she is just a hard political being. It also restricts ordinary people’s relationship with her to a political one. That would be a lie. The Madikizela-Mandela SA fell in love with was a beautiful young woman from whom her revolutionary husband drew strength. • Mondli Makhanya is the editorin-chief of City Press.

Wildlands hosts, teaches ‘treepreneurs’

ILDLANDS recently hosted a community activation at its Msunduzi Community Hub at Insika High in Sweetwaters. The hub, used as a learning venue, boasts a flourishing demonstration vegetable garden and seedling tunnel overseen by three future farmer interns. The activation was attended by the community members, known as “tree-preneurs”. These are people who grow indigenous trees and barter them with Wildlands for livelihood support items. Nedbank’s Sindi Makhanya shared advice on the importance of moneysaving and young and old were keen to learn about the benefits of saving. Attendees learnt about homestead permaculture. With the soaring food prices, tree-preneur Sibongile Dladla said she was compelled to come up with innovative ways to grow food while saving money. ITTING your home with the best lighting solutions will not only be ideal, aesthetically, but it offers health benefits to your vision as well as your overall mental health. This may be a worthwhile investment as LEDs consume up to 80% less energy than normal fluorescent lights. Consider the three main rooms you spend a large portion of your time in. For most people, this would be the kitchen, the lounge area and the bathroom. These three main rooms would be your starting point to achieving optimum lighting benefits for your home. We spend most of our time in these rooms whether by choice or by default, and you almost want to delight in spending time in that room or at least be comfortable. The kitchen for instance, is the room we spend a good portion of time preparing meals and sometimes eating there too, and you would want lighting that not only accents the layout, but also compliments natural lighting as well, says Mark Greenhill, Phillips Lighting, South

Africa product manager, LED. Here are some lighting solutions for the top three rooms in your home.

Living room It might be a point of contention as to whether the living room or the bedroom is a room you inhabit regularly. This would be a seasonal preference but suppose it’s summer, who would want to sit in a bedroom all day? The living room therefore becomes the room you will most likely frequent and possibly entertain guests, enjoy meals, and enjoy some down time. This room has many activities taking place in it, therefore lighting in this space needs a little more planning and thought. General lighting would usually be centred to light up the entire room as a ceiling fixture. This would provide overall illumination to the room. Suspended luminaires are a great example of a general light fixture and would also work even better if they came with a dimmer to adjust from warm white to cool white light depending on preference. Additional accent and task lighting gives added benefits of aesthetics and can also reduce glare from the television. Accent lighting for instance would give added appeal to a focal décor point in a room, like a piece of artwork or family pictures. Task lighting may or may not be included in this room depending on what you want to achieve. Bathroom “We are seeing more and more home owners invest in bathroom lighting because this room is one of the busiest. With proper lighting, a bathroom can brighten up your mornings and help you unwind after a long day,” says Greenhill. One of the main lighting features to get right

is around the mirror. Add one or two recessed lights in the ceiling above the bath and mirror for extra light. This will help when you want to put on your makeup, shave and do your hair. Your bathroom can also act as your haven, therefore it is necessary to have softer lighting fixtures that create an ambience. “For safety reasons, ensure that you charge your lights outside the bathroom before you place them around your bath,” he says. Kitchen Every kitchen, no matter how large or small, needs efficient lighting. This is as much from a safety point of view as anything else. “Consider switching your kitchen lights to cool daylight LED for a brighter and safer kitchen. The right light level will also help you to prepare your meals safely,” says Greenhill. LED strip lighting is becoming an increasingly popular and stylish way of lighting up your indoor spaces. Add strip lights around an island unit or breakfast bar. “This will give the illusion of floating furniture, which can create a magical feel at night and is great for wowing guests.” To choose lighting solutions that are on-trend and suitable for your family’s style and needs, keep asking yourself, how do I want to feel when in this room? New lighting is a pocket-friendly way to revamp the room without changing the furniture or repainting the walls. See what smart lighting solutions can do for you and your home. - Supplied.

Build a deck in nine easy steps A

DECK affords homeowners the opportunity to enjoy warm spring evenings, hot summer days and crisp winter mornings outdoors. Gather all your tools before you start. You will need some screwdrivers, clamps, a spirit level, tape measure, string line, pegs, a spade, dust mask, goggles and gloves. This is according to David Kemp, from Handyman Pretoria, who says with careful planning and attention to detail, homeowners can build a beautiful deck to share with family and friends. He says homeowners will need some basic carpentry skills but beyond that, building a deck is much easier than one might think. Kemp shares nine easy steps to build a deck…

PHOTO: SOURCED

To build the framework, start by laying out the outer deck frame using the planks you bought for bearing.

PHOTO: SOURCED

Gather all your tools before you start. You will need some screwdrivers, clamps, a spirit level, tape measure, string line, pegs, a spade, dust mask, goggles and gloves. • Plan the deck The key to success is planning the deck out properly. First choose your location and then decide if you want a sunny or shaded spot. Think about any features such as handrails (which are highly recommended for safety purposes). Take note that the more complicated the deck is, the harder the job will be, so a flat deck will be much easier to create than a raised deck. Take care to match your plan to your skill level too. Now draw your deck to-scale and include any features of your home like doors and windows. Allow access hatches for any drain covers or vents. • Buy deck components To build the framework, start by laying out the outer deck frame using the planks you bought for bearing. Use your plan to map out what you will need for your deck. Measure the area and look online or call up your local home improvement store to find out how much wood you will need for your deck’s size and proportions. Don’t forget to factor in posts and supports. It’s a good idea to buy your deck materials a week in advance to let them rest and adjust to the temperature and climate in your garden. Don’t forget, you’ll also need deck fabric and paving slabs for the foundation. • Assemble the tools Gather your tools before you start. That way you won’t have to stop to find something. To build a deck you will need a handsaw, circular saw, cordless drill and drill bits, a hammer and nails or electric nail gun and chisels. You also need some screwdrivers, clamps, a spirit level, tape measure, string line, pegs, a spade, dust mask, goggles and gloves. Make sure all your tools are in good working order, that way you can get started knowing everything you need is at hand. • Prepare the ground Lay up to six boards at a time, predrilling your screw holes before you put the boards down. The first thing you’ll need to do is dig out the ground to level it if it’s uneven. Once you have a decent and even surface, use pegs and string to map out where the deck will go. This will allow

you to see where to lay your foundation. It’s advisable to use decking fabric to cover the area, this will also ensure that there will be no weeds growing in the space. Use concrete paving slabs and lay them out in a grid pattern to hold the fabric down, and create a solid foundation for your deck. Use a spirit level to make sure your foundation has a subtle slope for drainage. Aim for a 10mm drop for every metre of decking. • Build a framework Now’s the time to build your framework. Start by laying out the outer deck frame using the planks you bought for bearing. Make sure the frame rests snug on the foundation. Clamp and join the frame at each corner using 150mm screws. Keep measuring to make sure the corners are exactly square. Your deck will last longer if you maintain it properly. Next up, fit your intermediate bearers. Use screws to attach them to the main deck frame. There should be a space of no more than 500mm between them. Use your spirit level to make sure all your bearers are flat. • Strengthen the frame You should now have a lattice of supporting joists within your outer deck frame. At this point, you might like to take short pieces of wood and attach them snugly to each corner between the joists, to give them extra strength and weight bearing properties. • Lay the deck boards Clear space in your garden to lay out your deck boards in the right pattern and shape before you actually cut them or put them on the frame. This one last check will ensure that you have everything and can fit it together the way you want. This step will also save you from making any mistakes. Once you’re happy, cut the boards if needed, and you’re ready to go. Lay up to six boards at a time, predrilling your screw holes before you put the boards down. Leave a gap of 5mm between each board for ventilation and expansion, which occurs in warm weather. Fit the ends of the boards first, then screw the board centres to the supporting joists. • Add a handrail Start by notching out your newel posts and positioning them in the right place around the deck. Next, measure your posts and mark where the handrails will be attached, this way you can double check that you have all the right pieces at the right length for the handrails. Now attach your handrails to the newel posts and screw them firmly in place.

• Maintain the deck Your deck will last longer if you maintain it properly. Most deck boards are already treated for weather proofing, you should check this before buying them. Even so, it is still worth doing an annual check for splinters, worn areas, rotting wood or drainage problems. If you spot them early, most problems can be fixed easily. Your deck will also benefit from a thorough wash once a year using a deck cleaning solution, followed by a treatment of deck oil for extra durability. Property24.

Learn to pave like a pro “L

EAVE it to a professional,” is something most of us have heard said before. Most of the times it’s a fairly accurate statement, but there are those times that you must ignore the naysayer and soldier on with your dream project. In this case, it involves laying down some paving on an area that you’ve been wanting to cover for quite some time. That small piece of ground where grass doesn’t grow, or perhaps some paving has collapsed and you want to uplift it and relay it. Jason Greer from Beyond Paving shares basic tips on how to complete your very own paving project. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PAVER There are a number of pavers available for various applications. Flagstones are generally wetcast pavers that can be moulded into a number of shapes, ideal for gardens, patios and pool surrounds. Clay bricks like Corobrick are generally used for driveways, walkways and pool surrounds, although, in our opinion, this is somewhat out of fashion. Finally, cement bricks are the most versatile and cover a variety of applications, from driveways to walkways, patios and pool surrounds and more. From a cost perspective, cement bricks are the cheapest, with flagstones tipping

the scale as the most expensive. GROUND PREPARATION Ground preparation is important as any sort of unprepared ground can result in “pooling”, sagging paving and loose bricks. First, loosely dig up the area where you want to lay the paving. This ensures that you start with a fresh piece of ground and get rid of things such as stubborn tree roots and weeds. This also establishes the depth you need to go according to the height of the pavers you’re going to use. Perhaps the most important element of this ground preparation, though, is to ensure that your levels are correct and that water flows away from your house or pool. Once this is done, you must compact the area, either using a hand stamper (if it’s a small area) or a plate compactor (easy to use and easy to hire from a tool shop). This ensures a solid base and foundation for your pavers to sit on. LAYING THE BASE MATERIALS Depending on what paver you’re laying, it will determine what base material you’ll use. Flagstones will need a bed of cement about 10 cm thick to rest on, while other paving will need a bed of river sand, about 20 cm, to rest on. Place some fishing gut or taut string along the intended path to ensure you keep

a straight line. There is no need to mix cement in with the river sand. If the ground is compacted well enough and solid, then your pavers will sit firm without the need for cement to be mixed in with the river sand. This also eliminates any future hassle should you need to lift those pavers. LAYING THE PAVING Once the base material has been laid and screeded with a long plank (take care not to compact the base material), start laying your paving. There are a number of patterns to choose from, including stretcher bond, herringbone, basket weave and so on. Herringbone is perhaps the most widely used and the most stable. Start from one corner of the area, working your way down the one side. Be prepared to cut pavers to fit into the area. This can be done using an angle grind er fitted with a diamond blade (again, easy PHOTO: SUPPLIED to hire from a tool shop). Ground preparation is important as any sort of unprepared ground can result Once all the paving has been laid, you’re in ‘pooling’, sagging paving and loose bricks. ready to grout. Keep in mind that if the edges of your ready to grout. place. paving are not up against a wall, you’ll have Grouting your average paving job requires ENJOY THE REWARDS to lay the boundary pavers onto a bed of a “dry grout”, which is a mix of plaster sand For a small job, the above guide should be cement to ensure the pavers don’t move. and cement (one part cement to three parts more than enough to ensure a happy result. sand). Rain, cold and great shows

T

HE 24th annual Hilton Arts Festival brought with it large numbers of festival-goers ready to be entertained by the variety of shows. “Numbers through the gate were up by 2000 and despite the damp and cool weather, over 10 000 tickets were sold,” said the festival’s Su Huggett. “There was an unusually large crowd on Saturday. The festival this

year saw an increase in comedy, such as shows by Mark Banks, Rob van Vuuren and the Searle Brothers. “We were delighted that the more unusual festival fare did well, with productions like One Man One Light; talks by music connoisseur, Richard Haslop, the art installation, Bird Fish; the non-verbal puppet production, Dallae Story from Korea. These were all extraordinarily

well received,” said festival director, Sue Clarence. She added that Fiona Ramsay, Pieter Dirk Uys, Bo Petersen, Dr John Kani and Graham Weir, the established national theatre fraternity, were also well supported. It was the perfect weather for good music and the music line-up was much enjoyed. Richard Cock in his various programmes, Christopher Duigan

and the Music Revival Series and concerts by the province’s two orchestras, the KZN Philharmonic and the Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra were a treat. “The productions at the Hilton Arts Festival were selected carefully and staged previously allowing audiences to enjoy works of excellence. There is a good spread of quality theatre, dance and music throughout the festival, and a wide

range of non-pretentious accessible art,’ said art administrator, Ismail Mahomed. “We are looking to the future and will continue to encourage corporate support of the festival to underwrite the ticket prices so that the productions can be more affordable. “Put in your diary that our 25th anniversary will be from 15 to 17 September next year,” said Clarence. - Supplied

Celebrating Heritage Day at Alex High

GHS celebrates Heritage Day Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High staff and pupils celebrate the rich and diverse cultural backgrounds at GHS through traditional dressup and the sharing of food. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

St Anne’s donates to Insika High Wildlands and Nedbank, partners in a Sustainable Schools Programme, recently presented St Anne’s with its recycling certificate for 2015. Pupils were shown how to recycle and encouraged to double their collection for 2016 in order to re duce the amount of waste going to the Pietermaritzburg landfill site. The presentation included a ‘Clothes for Life’ presentation which encourages pupils to donate their old clothes, which are then bartered with Wildlands’ treepreneurs. This project is made possible through support from Makro. At the hand over are (from left) Petronella Miya (Wildlands), Michael Ryan (Ned bank), Joyce Ntuli (Thembelihle), Aaron Kombora (Thembelihle), Moira Potter (Wildlands).

Ukuba intombazane ephila-Ningizimu Afrika

Nomfundo Xolo

Njalo ngesonto izinkulungwane ezingama-2 000 zabantu besifazane abaseminyakeni eyi-15 kuya engama-24 batheleleke ngesandulela ngculazi – isibalo esiphindwe kabili no hhafu (2 ½) uma kuqhathaniswa namathuba abesilisa. Lokhu kudalulwa uMnyango weZempilo, i- Human Sciences Research Council yalapha eNingizimu Afrika iyaveza ukuthi labantu besifazane abathelelekile bayikota yesibalo sabatheleleke ngesandulela ngculazi kuleli-zwe. Lezi-zibalo, ziyathusa futhi ziyinkomba yomthwalo kanye nobunzima abantu besifazane ababhekene nabo ngemiphumela yesandulela ngculazi. Ukufundisa ngezinhlelo kanye nezindlela zoku zokuzivikela kumgezinye zezindlela zokunciphisa lesi-sibalo. Intsha yesifazane isengcupheni enkulu yokutheleleka nge-HIV, ngenxa yezizathu ekubalwa kuzo isakhiwo somzimba kanye nezimo ababhekana nazo emphakathini. Izimo ezithinta ubuphofu, ukungalingani ngokobulili, izinkolelo kanye nezindlela umphakathi ophila ngazo ezingaphathi kahle abantu besifazane, nokungabikho kwezezempilo eziqondene nentsha kuphela. Khona manje umkhuba wama blesser nama blessee udlangile emphakathi, futhi nawo ungumthelela omkhulu kulesisibalo. I-blesser, kujwayeleke

ukuthi kube ngowesilisa okhulile kakhulu kunowesifazane, odlisa ngemali noma ngezipho ezibizayo. Isikhathi esiningi i-blessee noma owesifazane owamukelayo, uyaye ‘abonge’ ngokuzibandakanya ocansini okuyindlela abanye abazizwa ukuthi kuyimfanelo njengoba esuke enikezwe imali noma izipho. Yilapho futhi amathuba okutheleleka ngesandulela ngculazi kanye nokukhulelewa okungalungiselelwe, ngisho nawokuhlukumezeka ekhuphuka. U-Line Manager e Mosaic Clinic, eThekwini, u-Sibongiseni Khumalo uthe: “Ukukhulelwa kwamantombazane kuyingika eNingizimu Afrika. Cishe amaphesenti angu-30 abantu besifazane abayintsha baveza ukuthi bake bakhulelwa noma ikanye ezimpilweni zabo. Kunezincazelo nezimbangela eziningi ezingafani izwe lonke. Ezinye zezimbangela kubalwa kuzo izinhlobo zobudlelwano ezihlanganisa ukushitshana ngemali nocansi, ukudlwengulwa kanye nokungazivikeli nophathina abathandana nabo. Iningi labesifazane nabesilisa liqala ukwenza ucansi kusukela eminyakeni eyi-12, okubabeka emathubeni amaningi okusuleleka ngesandulela ngculazi, ukukhululelwa nokuhushula isisu ngokungaphephile, kanye nezinye izifo zocansi. Nakuba kunjalo, bazithola bengakwazi ukuthola usizo olwanele nolubhekene nabo ngqo beyintsha emtholampilo. U-Nomalanga Ngwazi* uthi yena kungenxa yokulalela abangani bakhe, ukuhlohlwa kanye nengcindezi njengoba wagcina esekhulelwe eneminyaka eyi-17:

“Ngakhulelwa ngifunda ibanga leshumi nanye; umntwana wami usenezinyanga eziyishumi manje. Ngangenza izinto eziningi ezingalungile ngoba ngingafuni abangani bami bathi ngisele ezintweni. Ekuqaleni babengihleka ngoba ngingenalo isoka. Emuva kwalokho bese bekhuluma ngocansi nanokuthi uma ngingalwenzi, ngiyaphuthelwa. Umama wami wathola ukuthi sengiqomile, wayesengixwayisa wathi angihlukane nesoka lami. Kodwa ngavele ngaqhubeka kakhulu, sagcina sesilwenzile ucansi. Kwakumnandi sisaqala kodwa kwahamba isikhathi laba abangigqugquzela base bengibalekela bengihleka ngoba ngase ngikhulelwe,” echaza. Kuyacaca ukuthi ukuthuthukisa ulwazi nemfundiso ngezocansi kanye nezinhlelo zezempilo ezitholakalo emtholampilo eziqondene nentsha kubalulekile ngoba kungasiza kwehlise izinga lokutheleleka ngesandulela ngculazi kubantu abasha baseNingizimu Afrika. Izinhlelo ezikuzamayo lokhu ziyaqubuka ekubalwa kuzo uhlelo olubhekene nabesifazane abasha olubizwa nge-DREAMS (Dreams stands for Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, and Safe). Uhlelo oluxhaswe nguMongameli waseMelika lokudambisa nokuhlenga iningi lentsha yesifazane ekuthelelekeni ngesandulela ngculazi uyaziwa ngoPEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) behlangene nezinye izinhlelo. U-Khumalo ugugquzela intsha yesifaane ukuthi isebenzise izinhlelo kanye nezindawo ezihlelelwe bona emitholampilo ukuze bagweme ukukhululewa okungahlelelwe kanye nesandulela ngculazi. Ugcizelele

Photo: Lauren Rautenbach nokubaluleka ngokuzivikela kabili i-dual protection: “Ukusebenzisa isivikeli kanye nokuhlela kuyakusiza ekugwemeni ukukhululwa okungalungiselelwe kanye nesandulela ngculazi kanye nezinye izifo zocansi.” U-Ngwazi uthi uyazisola ngezinqumo azithatha eziningi ezagcina ngokumenza umama esamncane. “Ukuba angizange ngibalalele abangani, angiboni ukuthi ngabe nginayo ingane. Ekugcineni usala wedwa abangani sebengekho. Kufanele uwavume amaphutha akho. Ngaphonseka ngenxa yokungazi nokunganaki ngazibandakanya ocansini

olungavikelekile futhi nesoka lami lalingaphethe sivikeli nami isidingo angizange ngisibone. Kuyacaca ukuthi ngangikulungele ukwenza ucansi, manje sengingumama wengane.” Abantu besifazane abasha base Ningizimu Afrika babhekana nezingqinamba kanye nengcindezi. Kufanele sibasekele, sibathande futhi sibanakelele ngokubagqugquzela ukuthi benze okuhle. * Igama lishitshiwe sokumvikela

Have you ever thought of the story behind an abandoned baby?

“I was raped by the father of my child. My mother told me I was not welcome in our house if I had another baby. I gave birth in the veld and left my baby there. I can’t even care for myself, how would I care for a child?” 18-year-old girl from Tembisa

Now you know, become part of the solution: Child abandonment shouldn’t be happening in a caring world. Help someone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy make informed and responsible decisions for their child and themselves, by calling 0800 864 658 or visiting www.crisispregnancy.org.za for information, options and support.

Join the conversation at #choosetocareSA and sign our petition for change at www.crisispregnancy.org.za. Still reluctant to get involved? Imagine that tiny little baby crying in the veld, all alone…

Grade R pupils received awards for outstanding performances and were placed first in the play and came second in story telling (back, from left) Saras Padayachee (teacher), Vasanthamoney Moodley (HOD Foundation Phase) and Karishma Hari (teacher) (front, from left) Grade R pupils Sinethemba Ngara, Bradlyn Johnson, Sbongakonke Makhathini and Luthando Mchunu.

A group of 10 girls from the Russell High Environmental Club were sponsored by the Johnny Lowe Trust Foundation to a two night visit to Bayete Game Lodge in the Zululand Game Reserve. They were given the opportunity to see South Africa's heritage and wildlife firsthand, a first for most of the pupils. They also visited Zululand AntiPoaching Wing Wing in Hluhluwe and signed the World Youth Wildlife Declaration book.

UNNERS have a few days remaining until the 2017 Comrades Marathon early-bird entries come to an end. The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced that the reduced entry fee of R420, applicable exclusively to South African runners, is valid for September only. The regular price of R460 will come into effect as from 1 October until the entry process is closed on 30 November or as soon as the 20 000 entry cap has been reached. So far, entries stand at over 7 600 and entries are being taken up quicker than in recent years. The CMA therefore asks athletes to enter as soon as possible in order to avoid disappointment. The CMA said it has exciting plans in place to cater for its runners and to make the 2017 Comrades Marathon finish that much more achievable. CMA general manager, Chris Fisher said they will be providing assistance to beginner runners. “The CMA will lend greater focus on our novice runners by hosting a series of Bonitas Comrades Novice Seminars and Bonitas Roadshows to motivate and support our athletes.” Fisher added that in support of our female runners, five Bonitas Women’s Seminars have been scheduled over the months of February and March 2017. “The CMA marketing team is also currently

OUR annual Ward 34 Community Sport Day is expected to bigger, more colourful and more exciting this year. The event caters for the variety of sport codes and was founded by yours truly in 2006. I am glad to see the event has grown and attracts hundreds of youngsters, most of whom are underprivileged or from the nearby informal settlements. Sport followers or teams from areas such as Eastwood, Glenwood, Thembalihle, Cinderella Park, Jesmonden, Malivana, Panorama, Madiba, andTamboville, are always there and create an electrifying atmosphere. I am also happy that last year’s partners and supporters are likely to join hands with us again. During the 2015 event we were blessed that our passionate partners and funders such as Karanichhas, Poobie Naidoo’s Sports Warehouse, the local media house, Department of Sports and Mpi Mchunu (Panorama entrepreneur) gave back to our community and brought smiles to our youngsters faces. It is interesting to note that I started this community sport day with only two teams from my neighbourhood, and now it is big. It is also interesting that our up-and-coming business people want to be part of it by buying sites on which to put up their stands and/or stalls. Our guest speakers this year are influential local figures, including Ward 34 Councillor Mike Amod and the Comrades Marathon veteran and the founder of Poobie Naidoo’s Sports Warehouse, Poobie Naidoo. This year’s event is scheduled for 29 October from 8am at Panorama School grounds. Potential partners and stalls owners are still welcome. ARITZBURG United head coach Ernst Middendorp says he thinks it may be time for him to step down. Middendorp was speaking at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday after the club’s 1-0 defeat against Polokwane City. This was Maritzburg United’s third loss of the Absa Premiership season after going down 2-0 against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on the weekend. “I don’t know if I can put in any additional energy required by the team to continue this fight. I have to sleep on it and take a couple of days off to think if I still want to continue this fight. “I take this defeat fully on my shoulders, I’m sorry to the players and the team but that’s how it is,” he said. Middendorp said even though they had already lost three games he was hopeful they will not be fighting relegation again this season. “It’s still early season, we have

only had five games, we are in a situation there’s no doubt about it – in a relegation battle again where we didn’t want to be, in particular with this game today, we had prepared well for it. These are not the results we anticipated.” He said Tuesday night’s game was the only one they were mostly disappointed about. “The other four games against Kaizer Chiefs, Sundown’s and Supersport were outstanding.” Middendorp said he thinks the players have lost their confidence following the game against Kaizer Chiefs where he says a ‘clear goal’ by Maritzburg United was disallowed. Bevan Fransman had the ball in the back of the net in the first 20 minutes of the game, but the defender’s effort was ruled out by the referee as a foul. “We got robbed in the Kaizer Chiefs game, there’s no doubt about it, but I don’t know for what reasons. There were consistently yellow cards on our side, and their goal was offside, definitely. It was very frustrating. As a result, the energy and the confidence in the players is gone.”
