MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Paramedics worked frantically yesterday to treat six men who were thrown from a bakkie that rolled and crashed into a concrete wall on the N3 near the Liberty Mall Fake attorney’s ‘practice’ shut down THE Pietermaritzburg high court has granted a final order shutting down the Pinetown law practice of “fake” attorney Stacey Naicker. The society alleges Naicker faked her attorney’s admissions certificate by copying someone else’s certificate and forging the signature of high court registrar Ronel Jooste. The court papers revealed that an investigation was launched into Naicker’s practice in January when officials from the Attorneys Fidelity Fund visited her offices and became suspicious because of her “demeanour and lack of knowledge of an attorney’s practice”. It was then found that her admissions certificate had the same case number as that another lawyer, Drushantha Ramsamy, who was admitted as an attorney in the high court on the same date, 7 June, 2013. Apart from advertising herself as an attorney on Facebook, Naicker also described herself as a lingerie model and posted many photographs of herself in racy poses on various social media platforms. No arrests made for cemetery at tack MOUNTAIN Rise SAPS reported that there have still not been any arrests made regarding the recent theft of Holby Funeral Homes’ equipment and assault of one of its employees
which took place at Mountain Rise cemetery recently. “This matter is still under investigation at the Mountain Rise Police. This seems to be an isolated incident as the cemetery is usually not considered as one of our hotspots. Unfortunately, no arrests have been made to date,” said Captain Gay Ebrahim. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Nqobile Madonda, acting municipal marketing and communications manager said that one of the challenges at the cemetery is lack of burial space. “The major challenge we are facing is the lack of burial space, which compels families to do reopens on same family graves which are scattered all over the more than 60 hectares of cemetery land which makes it difficult to have municipal security to guard all undertakers which are conducting burials all over the cemetery land,” she said. Three killed in N3 accident THREE men were killed when a bakkie rolled and slammed into a concrete barri er on the N3 near the Liberty Midlands Mall last Thursday. Three more men from the same bakkie were left with injuries. It is unclear how many of the men were in the back of the bakkie at the time of the crash. Paramedics raced to the crash site just before 7 am yesterday and found the bakkie upright, but crushed up against a concrete wall. All six men were thrown from the bakkie when it started to roll. According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, police had to close off the right and centre lanes of the highway to allow paramedics to safely treat the men. Meiring said paramedics worked tireless ly to provide Advanced Life Support to three of the men, who were found in a critical condition. All six were transported to the Hilton Life and MediClinic hospitals and three of them died a few hours later. vehicle and crashed into a tree on the roadside. He was found dead in the vehicle. Moodley was allegedly run over by an elderly woman driving the Honda on Saturday, June 18 at about 7.30 pm. It is believed a motorist had stopped the woman and told her that there was a body caught under her car. This happened at the intersection of Willowton Road and Chota Motala Road opposite Jumbo Footwear. It is believed that Moodley was run over and dragged for about a kilometre until his body was spotted under the car. He was found dead by police.

Copesville standpipes fixed again ALL standpipes in Copesville where repaired again by Msunduzi Municipality after continuous theft and vandalism of standpipes in the area. “We are always repairing only to have them vandalised and stolen. Not sure how long these repairs will last but we plan to undertake some education in the area. The area is also subjected to theft in relation to brass water meters. Just last night another 20 were stolen in Mercedes Drive which means over the last two months approximately 120 have been stolen. Communities need to understand that we are fast running out of water, and everyone needs to play a role in preserving it. We do not have the resources to guard each and every standpipe in the city, but we rely on individuals to do right, and right now some of us in the communities are not doing right. We can appreciate that we as council can do better with the response times, but we all need to work as a collective in saving the city water,” said Nqobile Madonda, acting municipal marketing and communications manager.

MEC for KZN Education Mthandeni Dlungwane attended the bail hearing of the school guidance counsellor charged with the alleged rape of pupils at the magistrate’s court last week.
EDUCATION MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane questioned the principal as to why it took so long for the allegations to be reported to the department, as the incident occurred on 3 June and was only reported to the SGB on 20 June after a criminal case was opened by one of the parents whose child was affected. Thereafter, the department was notified. The principal had no response as to why the incident was not reported but said that he thought he had allayed the concerns of the parents by speaking to the counsellor and advising him to “stop playing the touching games, leave his curtains open and his door ajar” while counselling children. During a meeting last week with the school governing body, school management and a host of officials, the principal admitted that he had not verified the qualifications and registration of the counsellor as it came to light after the allegations were made that the counsellor is not registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Once the SGB was made aware, they met twice in a space of four days to deal with the issue. Upon discovering that the counsellor was not registered, which meant his contract with the school was illegal, the SGB called for the counsellor to be dismissed. Dlungwane applauded the quick response by the SGB to dismiss the teacher but expressed his unhappi ness and shock at the support shown in favour of the counsellor by other teachers at the school who, instead of standing with the parents and pupils, stood behind the counsellor when he appeared in court last week.
The MEC said that an allegation was enough to report it to the department. “This is very serious. If there is such an allegation there is a reason to be worried. Now it is coming out that a number of children are coming forward with the same allegations and these things are happening in the presence of others. Ultimately we are responsible for the safety of the children,” he said. Dlungwane assured the parents, during a separate meeting with them, that they have the full support of the department. “Whatever happens we are standing by you in support for our pupils and parents. For us there is enough to go on with just an allegation and some decisions have to be taken without delays,” he said. Parents were angered that they were not called into school and told about the situation but rather found out about it in a “general letter”. “Why were we not informed the minute there was such an accusation?” questioned a mother. Parents questioned why there was no yearly check done on teachers and went of to express their concern about all the other teachers at the school. “How do we know that the other teachers or the principal didn’t suspect anything? Every single child that has been in contact with him in the time that he has been at the school needs to be made aware of the allegations and questioned,” a parent said. “I came to this school and I insisted that my kids come here because it’s such a great school, it’s not anymore,” a tearful mother said. The counsellor’s next court appearance is Monday, 18 July.

“I have a daughter in Grade 6 at the school. I feel such sorrow for all those kids who were harmed and I hope for once that justice will be served.” “I am disappointed at the manner in which the school has handled this case. The parents were kept in the dark up until the last moment. “We should have been informed so that we could have communicated with our children to find out if they were affected as well. “It also makes it difficult to get answers with the school being closed. We send our children to school every day under the impression that they are in a safe environment and to have something like this happen, it’s >> disappointing and upsetting. N excited crowd carrying Indian flags gathered to catch a glimpse of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday. Modi arrived in Pretoria last Thursday for an official two-day visit aimed at strengthening relationships between South Africa and India. After meeting with President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday, Modi flew to KwaZulu-Natal to visit Pietermaritzburg and Phoenix in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi. Modi arrived at Pentrich station on Saturday morning, then travelled by train to the Pietermaritzburg station. The 15-minute trip commemorated Gandhi’s attempted journey to Pretoria where he was kicked off the train at the Pietermaritzburg station, after refusing to move from the first class carriage to the third class carriage. On a spotless station Modi was escorted from the train onto a red carpet where he was greeted by many cameramen and women. Alongside Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela and KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Willies

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi waves at media as he steps onto the platform of the Pietermaritzburg station on Saturday. Mchunu, Modi laid a wreath in remembrance of Gandhi at a plaque on the platform. Modi then gave a brief speech in Hindi, mentioning Gandhi and Nelson Mandela before being led to the station gates. A large crowd, armed with phone cameras and Indian flags, chanting his name, gathered at the entrance of the station to welcome him. Midlands Hindu Society’s Sherry Mahabeer said Modi’s visit had been “much anticipated” among the Indian community. “Seeing Modi cemented a sense of belonging, it was like receiving our own and being in touch with the motherland even for those who have never visited India,” she said. Mahabeer said that although Modi’s appearance was brief, catching a glimpse of the prime minister was like being linked to India. Zuma and Modi held discussions during the visit that led to the signing of the memorandum of understanding on the establishment of grass-roots innovation of science and technology in the area. They also signed a memorandum of understanding on tourism and a programme of cultural co-operation and information, communication technology.

timeously update me of his plan of action. He would call whenever he was on site to ensure that I was posted on the progress of the job or what would take place that day. All the trees were felled without the use of a “cherry picker”, nor having to drop down any electricity or telephone lines. To the ladies at the office and Naicker and team, you have done us proud by work ing very efficiently and effectively. God bless you, you have done your city proud. LOGAN GOVENDER Pietermaritzburg
COMMUNITIES have expressed concern about the roots of violence and its impact on the nation. Much of the violence has its origins in service delivery protests and the ANC’s list processes regarding the coming elections. In 2014-2015 South Africa witnessed 14 500 service delivery protests (SAPS report). To add, the unacceptable rate of unemployment and rampant crime add to the gloomy picture. The violent protests banned by the SABC are leading us towards Moeletsi Mbeki’s path towards a
Why is Afrikaans still so prominent? I WAS two years old during the Soweto uprising and grew up not knowing the significance of the sacrifices made by the youth of that time. As a child I did not understand apartheid, neither did I question why I had to learn Afrikaans. Now that I have my own children and we live in a democratic South Africa, I ask why this big representation of apartheid is still a part of my life and that of my children. I have not had the need to use Afrikaans in all my life, English being the language most people communicate in. By all means, teach Afrikaans to children whose parents prefer it, but do not impose it on others. Certainly do not make it compulsory, nor a factor that affects passing the year.

Put prisoners to good use CAN the government not see that the unions are the cause for the downfall of our country and our just-above junk status? Margret Thatcher saw what the unions were doing to England so her government banned them outright. See how England has gone ahead since then? Unions are banned in Canada. That country is so far ahead of itself that one pays just about nothing for the Internet Service Provider (ISP), while cellphones used in the municipal areas are free. Businesses in South Africa should be able to hire and fire whom they see fit to do so.
Here in South Africa we have a huge prison population, who are just sitting in prison doing nothing. I suggest the government use the prisoners to work in businesses, in commerce and industry. They don’t have to be paid because they are working off their prison time. With prisoners doing the work for nothing, working off their prison time, all food and household appliances will be cheaper.
ble leadership on political matters and administrative issues to the IFP? How can the IFP influence the decisions of both the Electoral Court and the high court? Why play cheap politics and fiddle while their house is burning?
WHILE in the vicinity of Raisethorpe Mall on Sunday, 10 July, about 1pm, I overheard one elderly woman say to another: “So Highway Queen is up the pole,” giggling, as she pointed to a poster on a nearby lamp post. I was taken aback and surprised to see they were referring to a poster of the DA-nominated person who would be standing for election in Ward 30. I thought that people in Ward 30 compare the party’s choice with a woman who was notorious for her nocturnal escapades in the eighties, says lots about the party’s choice of candidates in the northern areas. She does not even live in the ward. DALEEP SAN Mountain Rise

acceptable violence is to engage with the people at grassroots. The DA is addressing elections with constructive policies to rubbish corruption, halt wasteful expenditure and strive to create jobs and alleviate poverty. Perhaps the ANC needs to be reminded that the protests and violence cannot continue. We cannot afford to waste this opportunity away. JAY JUGWANTH Via email

Blaming opposition is cheap politics I WOULD like to salute Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, president of Inkatha Freedom Party, for calling a press conference in relation to the inflammatory remarks made by National Freedom Party’s youth leader Ms Busisiwe Tshabalala, who had claimed that the IFP is responsible for her party’s failure to register for the local government elections. We call ourselves a rainbow nation, but our languages are limited to two. English is the most commonly spoken language and can be used almost everywhere to communicate. Afrikaans and any other official language should be an optional extra. Furthermore, calling Afrikaans a “first additional home language” is a complete misnomer, because it is not the home language in most cases. We find ourselves still learning a language “forced” on us 40 years later, and so the deaths on Soweto Day go unrewarded. We remember the dead but we haven’t won their fight.
Have you ever thought of the story behind an abandoned baby?

From PMB to Hollywood Amy Letcher is taking her career in the US film and theatre industry by storm. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
KAVITHA PILLAY RAISED in Pietermaritzburg, actress Amy Letcher has taken her stage and screen acting to Hollywood. The 22yearold has already featured in a number of local and international stage productions and films, including Keeping Up Appearances (2012), which was filmed in South Africa. In the U.S. she’s starred Reckoning (2014), Goblin Queen (2014), webseries Goody Two’s (2015), Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? (2015), and is currently appearing in the theatre production Princess Freckles and the Forever Kingdom, which she also wrote. The play, which is Letcher’s autobio graphical onewoman production about growing up in Zimbabwe and South Africa, hit the festival circuit in the U.S. last year and has seen incredible success since its Los Angeles debut. It was accepted into the Whitefire Solo Theatre Festival in February, and will be at the United Solo Theatre Festival in October. “Princess Freckles and the Forever King dom has been invited to the United Solo Theatre Festival the largest solo theatre festival in the world in New York in October. In the past, Academy Award winners have showcased work there, so I’m very excited about the opportunity,” said Letcher. “I’ve also been on Black Sails playing Lydia, and worked on Hooten and the Lady and Killer Instincts with Chris Hansen, which are international TV series being shot in the Cape.” The fourth season of the internationally acclaimed pirate drama series Black Sails is currently filming in Cape Town. The second
season of Black Sails is aired on History (DStv channel 186) on Tuesdays at 8.30pm. The actress, who attended schools in Pietermaritzburg including The Wykham Collegiate and St John’s Diocesan, started acting from age six, roleplaying at every opportunity. “The family had to endure numerous ‘Amy Productions’ at home as did guests and their children who were roped in.” She spent her senior school years at St Anne’s Diocesan College in Hilton, having moved there at her insistence because of its reputation for drama studies. Her first major role was when she starred as Roxy Hart in the musical production Chicago, directed and produced by Lynn Chemaly, theatre director at St Anne’s Diocesan College. Letcher took a gap year after school and worked for Scripture Union Independent Schools before enrolling at film school Afda in Cape Town. In her first year, she won a lead role in a graduation film that was nominated for a Safda award and was chosen for the Durban International Film festival and the Shnit International Short Film Festival a festival that takes place simultaneously on five continents. “After a year at Afda, I was encouraged by my acting lecturer to audition for a place at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood. I auditioned, was accepted with two scholarships, and spent the next 18 months training,” said Letcher. “Reckoning was my first notable role that grew my screentime and led to other roles,” said Letcher, who recently starred in Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, a psychological drama hoping to hit the festival circuit. Another festival film she starred in, Goblin Queen, was accepted into the 2016 Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival in Seattle. She also performed in the AMTC Shine Talent Convention in Florida with over 900 other performers, where she won Best Overall Adult Actress. “Living in LA has been a huge culture shock, and a bigger adventure than I could ever have imagined. To think I used to dream of this place when I was six years old … It’s kind of surreal acting is such an allornothing industry, and the American culture is very different to the South African one.” “I miss home, but I couldn’t think of anywhere I’d rather be, or anything I’d rather be doing. When you find what makes you come alive, the homesickness, the strange ness, saying goodbye and the daily mental selfpep talks they’re all worth it.”

Mo Magic in PMB H
AVING astonished, amazed and entertained a number of celebrities, personalities and the public with his weekly primetime TV show titled Magic with Mo on SABC3, South African magician Mo Magic brings his theatre show to Pietermaritzburg for four performances as part of his national tour. A first of its kind for South Africa, the TV show gained a tremendous following from the viewing public and rose to second most watched South African TV show on SABC3. “I’m thrilled the TV show was so well received. South Africans are clearly appreciating the art of magic and I’m honoured to be sharing it with them,” said the magician. With an honours degree graduate in electronic engineering, Mo resigned from a lucrative career as a project manager, in 2010, to pursue his passion for the art of magic. “Last year brought with it the realisa tion of my dream to share the art of magic with South Africans regularly on TV, taking it to them in their homes. During 2016, I plan to take the art of magic to people in their towns and cities to experience live.” This being his 14th year with the art of magic, the audience can expect to see some of the magic, mentalism (mind reading magic) and stunts as seen on the TV show, and other routines saved espe cially for the 90minute theatre show. He will also have you in stitches with his clean comedy and witty adlibs. The tour started in Durban with
multiple soldout performances in February, then proceeded to the Wild Coast and Port Elizabeth. The magician is now thrilled to bring the show to Pietermaritzburg as part of the tour. “I love performing the art of magic and the art form is best experienced live. I look forward to intriguing and entertaining the Pietermaritzburg au diences with my theatre show, es pecially since this will be my first public theatre per formance in the beautiful city,” said Mo. The brand ambassa dor for Child Welfare Durban & District, he will also be using the tour to spread aware ness about the contribu tion made by the organisation towards “giving childhood back to children”. The magician’s ambi tious nationwide tour makes history in that this is the first time a South African magician will tour every province with a theatre show, combining magic, mentalism and comedy. The show will then travel internationally. The show takes place at the Hex agon Theatre in Golf Road. Tickets R100 and R120 from Computicket. No under children under the age of six are allowed and no admittance after the start of the performance. Supplied.

Going for hockey gold P
IETERMARITZBURG’S Kara Stella, South African Women’s hockey player, began her love affair with hockey from a young age and enjoyed learning the technical side of the sport. “I think what I love most about the game is that it’s such a technical sport so there is always something new to learn. I also love being able to express myself on the field, it has an awesome culture and some of the best people I have met, have been through hockey,” she said. The versatile athlete has not one, but three national colours to her credit, having represented South Africa for the U20 women’s basketball team, indoor and outdoor hockey. “I would like to cement my place in the national side, and hopefully get the opportunity to go to a major tournament,” said Stella. Having been awarded the Indoor Player of the Series when they toured Namibia there last year, she then followed up that performance with another Player of the Series, this time
at home also against Namibia in December. “Any time you wear the green and gold is incredible but actually, my proudest moment was captaining Tuks when we won USSA in 2013. We as a team had to overcome a lot that year, and it was a really rewarding feeling being able to get a reward for all that hard work. “A close second though was being able to sing the national anthem at Hartleyvale in Cape Town when I played my fifth Test after trying to get back into the team for five years. That was a special and personal moment for me,” she said. With 11 caps for the national team, Stella decided to share her knowledge with future generations. “The thing I enjoy most about coaching children is that moment when the light bulb flashes and they understand the skill or idea you have been trying to teach them. With that realisation comes this pure joy and happiness that just lights up their face. To me, that is the best feeling in
the world, because you just enhance their passion for the game. Coaching children isn’t just about teaching them a skill; it’s about showing them what they are capable of if they just try. When I coach, I try not coach just the game, I try use the game to teach them life skills as well,” said Stella. She will now coaching the first team from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School and hopes her team will be able to bring home gold in the upcoming Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge having only won silver and bronzes over the entire history of the tournament. “I think it’s an awesome way to showcase the hockey talent in this country. It’s also good for children to see what is out there and the competition they have. Hopefully it will motivate them to work harder and fuel their passion for the game. “Hockey tournaments like this are also great for developing relationships as well and make you feel like you are part of community,” said Stella. - Supplied

SA Downhill champ returns to defend title CURRENT downhill champion, Stefan Garlicki (25), is returning home from Europe to race on one of his favourite tracks and defend his 2015 title at the 2016 South African National Mountain bike Championships, which take place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg this weekend, 16 to 17 July. “I’m looking forward to next weekend, and I’m really looking forward to coming home,” he said. Garlicki has been racing and training in Europe for the first half of the year and eagerly anticipates getting back Stefan Garlicki returns to South Africa to defend his title at the South African National Mountain Bike Championships this weekend. onto South African soil. “I’m just going to go and do the best that I can and hopefully that puts me out on top. I feel great on the bike at the moment and I’ve had a couple of good results recently in Europe so I’m feeling confident heading in. But I’m sure the locals will be training hard on the track at home and will definitely be putting up a good fight,” Garlicki said. He said that he loves the Cascades track. “I loved the World Cup track. It was one of, if not my favourite track that I’ve ridden around the world. Mainly because of the high speed section in the middle with the huge table tops,” he added. Coming from a motocross background, Garlicki feels a sense of
nostalgia on the track, as the section he spoke of took him back to the days of racing. Garlicki also said that the Cascades track has become increasingly renowned since hosting World Cups and a World Championship. “There’s a huge riding scene in KwaZulu-Natal. I have got quite a few friends from around there as well. I think all the elements come together in a good way. I’d say it’s always the favourite venue to race at,” he said. - Supplied
