extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our
own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015
renew083 our pledge to you to do our very best ASHwe GANI 786 3377 ashgani@telkomsa.net to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Turning recycling into child’s play NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za

INGAKWENZA, a charity focused on early childhood development, takes recycling to another level with a wide range of educational toys made purely from recyclable materials. These toys cover all concepts that children need to have covered in preparation for formal education in Grade 1. Julie Hay, founder of Singakwenza, is a qualified and experienced Foundation Phase teacher and ran a Toptots franchise for more than 10 years. During this time, she was involved with affluent parents of children under the age of four. “These parents spent a large amount of money buying educational toys for their children to ensure they were ready for school. It worried me that so many other children in South Africa did not have access to these kinds of opportunities during this vitally important phase of their development, because of their financial situation,” she said. According to Hay, young children learn best when they are actively involved in play. However, the cost of educational toys prevents most of the approximately 5.2 million children under the age of four in the country from accessing them. “The only way we are going to change South Africa’s frightening education statistics is by improving access to early childhood development programmes for as many children as we can,” she said. Hay took a leap of faith in 2010, sold her business and started a non-profit organisation that provided sustainable early childhood education in economically disadvantaged areas. Her goal was twofold - to teach parents and teachers in these communities about the importance of learning through play and to fill bare crèches and playgrounds with enough equipment to ensure busy, happy, stimulated children.Rather than buy expensive toys that could break or get lost, she looked at ways of making things sustainable by providing toys that would be accessible to children both in the classroom and at home. “I looked around to see what was freely available and accessible throughout the country, and what we have an abundance of in South Africa is rubbish. I looked at the educational toys and thought about ways of making the same toys from recyclable materials. As a result, bread bags now become skipping ropes, margarine containers become cars, polystyrene trays become puzzles and yoghurt containers become shape sorters. Packaging that would usually be thrown away now has a value,” she said. Singakwenza has made toys that teach shapes, colour and number, toys that develop gross and fine motor skills, and toys that provide opportunities to develop creativity and problem-solving skills. “The key to the success of our programme is that we teach parents and teachers how to make and use the toys, but more importantly how these skills prepare children for formal education,” said Hay.

Illegal abortions remain a major concern >> SA has one of the most progressive abortion laws in the world
NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za
D
ESPITE the serious consequences of illegal abortions, women continue to go to back-street abortionists for so-called “pain free” and “safe” abortions. KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has been on a campaign since November 2015 sensitising the public to the implications of this through an antiillegal abortion campaign. Dhlomo said in a press release, that data from the Department of Health information service reflects that in 2014-2015 alone, 20 013 patients were admitted in various provincial

health institutions due to incomplete abortions and a further 1 455 abortions were septic. He said one of the contributing factors to women seeking back-street, illegal abortionists is because some health-care professionals pass moral judgments on them when they seek reproductive health services. This level of pressure, coming from nurses and other medical staff are, in some ways, sending women to illegal abortionists for fear of being ridiculed and their abortion becoming news, which spreads through their community. “We are trying to remind our health-care professionals about the importance of upholding professional
ethics at all times. This includes creating a conducive environment for everyone who seeks health care, regardless of age. “The Hippocratic Oath and Nurses’ Pledge compel doctors and nurses to keep patient information private and confidential at all times - it is very important,” he said. South Africa has one of the most progressive abortion laws in the world where women legally have the right to terminate a pregnancy up to the 20th week of pregnancy according to the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Amended Act of 2008. “What is alarming is that we see these illegal abortion providers on the street corners distributing their illegal
children of this city with the necessary services in order to better their lives. For the past three years Midi (Msunduzi Innovation and Development Institute), has been researching ways to make Pietermaritzburg a child friendly city and released a study last year on children’s views about the city. “After the study we realised we had to stop talking for the children and find a way for them to have their voices heard. They’ve never had a platform that allowed them to do this, which is why the change ambassador programme was developed. “During a workshop with the children we noticed that there were dynamos is our midst and these children are the future of the city,” said Rutendo Zendah, programme facilitator. She said working with the children has been a humbling experience. “This has been the best part of what I do. I get to see children become leaders and speak out. They challenge me to be a better person.” During the first 2016 stakeholders forum which was held last week, five
representatives from the programme presented three key areas of focus the change ambassadors will focus on. Thabo Zeteba (16), from Sobantu Secondary, presented his initiative providing safe transport for children who walk long distances to get to and from school every day. Thabo said there are about 70 children, as young as six, who walk 45 minutes to an hour from Jika Joe Informal Settlement to Sobantu to attend schools in the area. The reason these children attend these Sobantu schools is because they don’t have to pay school fees. Not only do the young children navigate through the traffic in a very congested area, but there have also been instances where children have been attacked. Ayanda Khoza (13), from Esigodini Primary, felt the plight of the elderly and the young children, who do not have access to nearby clinics and have to travel far from their homes and wait for hours to collect medication. There are only a few clinics in rural areas that cater for a very large population. Ayanda has to leave his home at 6am and take four taxis to get to the nearest clinic. This trip sometimes takes him the whole day and means he has to miss school.
abortion pamphlets. We also see these adverts plastered on nearly all street walls and lamp posts. The proliferation of this advertising makes many women believe they are accessing a legitimate service, when they are not. In fact, these people who do back-street abortions are health murderers,” said Dhlomo. According to the Act a legal termination of a pregnancy can only take place at a facility which has access to medical and nursing staff, an operating theatre, appropriate surgical equipment, drugs for intravenous and intramuscular injection, has necessary medical and emergency equipment, appropriate infection control measures, gives access to safe

Hlengiwe Mcoyi (16), from Silver Heights, is focusing on the importance of recycling and encouraging both young and old to get involved through educational workshops, which the group is planning to host this month. Stakeholders at the meeting identified the seriousness of these projects and, with the children, will be working towards a way of helping these children either by approaching schools closer to their home about free exemptions or approach the
Department of Education regarding funds for transport, meet ward councillors to address the need for satellite clinics or help with recycling. “These children are such important resources to the community. They are exceptional leaders, who know how to speak out, know their rights and who are willing to participate in any way to get their voices heard and needs met,” said Irene Dugmore, Midi project manager.

Eden Myrrh, the Pietermaritzburg hopeful on ‘The Voice SA’ will take centre stage this Sun day in front of the judges hoping to make it to the live rounds.
T’S battle round time for Eden Myrrh, the Pietermaritzburg hopeful on The Voice SA as she takes centre stage in front of the judges hoping to make it to the live rounds of the show. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Myrrh said the experience was as much a rewarding one as it was draining emotionally, physically and psychologically. “It’s not just about getting up on the stage and singing with another person, it’s a battle. As a musician, battling someone on stage is virtually the opposite to a lot of what you’ve been taught. “Throwing out thoughts of synergy and cohesion was probably the hardest for me because I tend to shrink back to give
someone else the spotlight, or make an effort to blend with them as much as I can. It may be something that I reiterate a lot but it definitely taught me to develop my identity,” she said. Myrrh said that the atmosphere changed on set when the show progressed to the battle rounds. “Everyone was considerably more carefree in the blind auditions. Straight afterwards though we felt a lot more competitiveness and seriousness. People are definitely more focused and have their game faces on,” she said. Working with Kahn Morbee, is one of the greatest parts of being on the show explained Myrrh. “It’s definitely a highlight to work with someone who is as easy-going as myself. Kahn allows us to explore our ability while

How we change it is something to look forward to.” Since her first audition on The Voice SA Myrrh said that the support of the Pietermaritzburg community has been overwhelming. “I am so thankful for the support of the local media and subsequently the support from the people. “Pietermaritzburg is generally a small place and everyone knows everyone, it has been encouraging to see people come together to support,” said Myrrh. Speaker now FEVER 9 GOODBYE GOUT needs to vacate chair maritzburg
AS far as I am aware, speakers, whether in the national assembly, provincial legislatures, or in municipalities, are supposed to be politically neutral, and not openly advertise their bias towards a particular party. The previous week’s Constitutional Court’s ruling that MPs have the right for their questions to be answered, will definitely change how business is conducted in Parliament. No more will Ms Baleka Mbete be able to order opposition members out of the house, no matter how unpalatable questions may be. It’s now time the speaker is ordered out of the chair that she occupies, and a neutral speaker chosen.
In the Msunduzi Municipality, the speaker is trying to fool ratepayers in the northern areas into believing that the indigent policy is an ANCled benefit, whereas it is some-thing that is allowed for in our Constitution. The speaker’s non-neutrality and his bias towards his ANC masters is plain for ratepayers to see. The other parties have been filling in indigent forms for many years. Very strange the extent to which ANC deployees will go to claim self-credit for something that is in our Constitution. DALEEP SAN Mountain Rise
Chairperson resigns, sad loss IT is with deep disappointment to have learnt of the resignation of the chairperson of the Mountain Rise Community Police Forum, Jay Jugwanth. Community policing is a concept that was adopted more than 20 years ago in South Africa. It has proved to be an essential partnership between the communities and SAPS. Jugwanth an experienced retired, teacher devoted his retirement and many years to community service and SAPS Media reports and the community that he
was involved with always reported positively on Jugwanth’s commitment to improve the relations between the community and SAPS. Community awareness in the CPF was high for the first time in the Mountain Rise station’s areas of jurisdiction. Both the community and SAPS have lost an excellent and enthusiastic individual. It is indeed a sad occasion for all. LOGAN GOVENDER Pietermaritzburg

Fortunately I can take Lifetones in conjunction with my insulin and it does not affect the diabetes medications. I have referred some of my family members to Lifetones and they have seen great results too. My brother in Johannesburg suffers from arthritis in the knees even though he goes to gym & is active. Lifetones has helped his arthritis. My mum has also suffered from severe arthritis after a bad fall, and Lifetones has helped ease her pair and give her some relief. Lifetones has really helped p us all: try y it for y yourself and you'll see!" ORIGINAL

HE OTT (Over The Top) Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) Enterprise Relay, Maritzburg’s zaniest event of the year, will be taking place on 22 April at the Royal Showgrounds. The PCB is delighted to be partnering with CK Water and Energy Drinks, Daymed Private Hospital and the Maritzburg Fever to bring you the 2016 edition of the PCB OTT Enterprise Relay. “The event was created because so many companies asked us to consider developing an inter-company relay like the old Stannic Relay. Much thought went into how we could put together a fun networking and team event that was not a serious running event, but that incorporated an element of fun and brought businesses together in a relaxed environment, and the OTT relay was born,” said Melanie Veness, PCB CEO. This will be the fifth instalment of the event which has grown in popularity as far as entrants and attendance are concerned with over 100 teams and more than 1 000 people on site last year despite the weather. “It’s because of this unique ability to attract rain in July that we have decided to move the event to a sunnier date and you will notice that it is now taking place in April,” said Veness. Entries are already pouring in for this “not-at-all-serious” corporate relay. “Along the route you might be charged one braaied chop to release you from prison or you might be expected to do the funky chicken, but be assured that you’ll be laughing hysterically,” said Veness. The event is designed to bring
