A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

OCAL musician and producer, Feleba, also the founder of Rieco Bird Media, is putting township musicians on the map. Feleba SK has worked with many artists in the music industry. “I started putting my work onto record in 2003 with my friends Mondi and Makhosini, and together we formed a group called Ghetto Ghost under the stable, BMU records. “The group became successful, but as we grew older we seemed to go in different directions so we decided to end the group with the intention of building ourselves as solo artists. “In 2007 I started a new group called Zulu Camp with five members - Mic Stealer, SBS, Jakalasi, BMK and

Kimbe - and the band became very popular. “We released two projects, which did well in terms of sales, because we used the money from the sales to upgrade our recording studio. “I later left Zulu Camp, allowing them to grow their artistry, and then in 2010 I formed Hustle 411. This group released a project in 2012, which was well received and it put us on the Durban and KZN music industry map.” Hustle 411 has now become home to three additional members. “The past years in the industry have taught me a lot as I have gained skills in production, self-marketing as well as developing my music skills. “I am also working with most of the Botha’s Hill musicians through Rieco Bird Media. I am so committed to my
work that I turned my bedroom into a recording studio. I hosted Afrik Hip Hop Mixtape with Zay Heath from the United States, the aim of which was to open platforms for musicians from all corners of Africa. “I believe my music is easy to understand in that you don’t have to be a hip-hop lover to listen to my records - you can relate to my raps even if you not into hip-hop. I have performed on indoor and outdoor stages, for big and small crowds.”

NOSIPHO MKHIZE IKHETHELO Children’s Village, formerly known as Makaphutu, is a registered non-profit organisation which gives a better life and future for children with a tragic background. Ikhethelo's Associate Development director Ruth Mthembu said KwaZulu-Natal has one of the highest rates of HIV/Aids which is the primary cause of the orphan cycle. “Each child has a compelling story, a tragic case history of an unthinkable beginning to life. Each child comes to us having been stripped from an opportunity to create and envision their future. With 48 children under our care, we strive to provide them with opportunities to create and envision their future. “We give a child a fresh start in a loving, supportive community. Our children’s greatest need is love, and we attempt to give them that love through everything we do, including education, counselling and the teaching of life skills necessary to succeed. “We help our children feel nurtured and secure by creating a safe and loving environment in which they can, not only be restored, but flourish. We allow each child to reach their full potential by encouraging a love for learning, self-discipline and a sound work ethic. As we love and encourage our children we help them to believe in their importance as individuals to succeed and we nurture the diverse and unique talents of every child. She said Ikhethelo Children’s Village is not a stereotypical orphanage, but instead tries to create a healthy home environment within each cottage, which itself is part of a loving, vibrant, safe village community. “IKhethelo has six cottages functioning as family units. Each family unit consists of a house mother caring for a group of eight children, as in a natural family. The cottages each have six bedrooms, three bathrooms and an open plan living kitchen area and are suitably furnished and equipped. The house parents are the foundation on which each family is built. “The house parents receive weekly training and on-going support from the management team including our social workers, guest psychologists

Being staunch believers in education we believe in delivering holistic and quality education to our children.” She added Ikhethelo's main aim is that by providing a good home environment, love and care they will be able to empower children to take charge of their future. “They form part of the next generation and because of that we stand firmly behind them. Through the 15 years of the organisation’s existence it is evident that this is not an individual effort, but one that can be achieved with the help of the local community and businesses.” For more information, call Ruth Mthembu on 079 137 8310 or email ruth@ikhethelo.org or visit www.ik hethelo.org
QUADPARA Association of KZN is an autonomous non-profit and a public benefit organisation that has been developing since 1993, and is responsible for all its own development, projects and administrative funding. QuadPara Association chief executive officer Cedric Hedgcock said: “Our aim is to deliver life-changing services to people with severe mobility impairments in KwaZulu-Natal by delivering projects that our donor and CSI partners can be proud of. Quadriplegics are one of the most vulnerable groups within the disability sector. “Those who are discharged to rural communities without any support or guidance structures have little chance of surviving the first year – the only dreams available are often nightmares of pain, isolation, poverty, abuse and death. “The association’s outreach, rural development and rural capacity building programmes offer hope and independence to those who desper-
ately need it. We cannot do it, however, without serious funding and partnerships.” The association is involved in various projects namely the Ashley Village - a home and a personal development ground for the 37 quadriplegics and paraplegics. Ashley Village employs nine permanent caregivers, between 10 and 12 trainee caregivers, three drivers and two grounds men. “The capacity building courses started in 2009 and these are proving to be highly successful, motivating, and life changing for those attending. We also embark on caregiver training. “It has been a highly successful project, with almost 80 percent of graduates moving on to be successfully employed.” The association has four vehicles that are extensively used to transport quadriplegics and other mobility impaired people to and from work, training modules, learnerships, and some excursions. He said that quadriplegics in KZN also participate in a road safety
awareness campaign, visitation, counselling, outreach, provincial development, income generation projects, driver training as well as HIV/ Aids, reproductive health and disability projects. “Without the generous support of our donors, however, we would have floundered and closed before we started 17 years ago. “A huge debt of gratitude is owed to so many donor partners and supporters who continue to care enough to keep our services going to an expanding number of persons with severe mobility impairments. Without them we cannot go on or develop as needed and planned. “I feel satisfied that our service provision has started expanding and developing its focus well beyond the boundaries of serviced accommodation. “We are well aware of the increased responsibility - we have to deliver meaningful services to a far greater pool of persons with physical disabilities in KZN.” For more information on the organisation, call 031 701 7444.
Comrades makes historic decision THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is in the process of implementing a directive from Athletics South Africa that two wheelchair-assisted participants be permitted to participate in the 2016 Comrades Marathon. “The CMA welcomes what is an historic decision for our sport and we em-
brace it in line with the spirit of the Comrades Marathon’s values and vision of equality and inclusivity,” said CMA chairperson, Macdonald Chitja. Two athletes, Chaeli Mycroft and Anita Engelbrecht, have complied with the standard qualifying times and entry requirements for the race and no
special provision has been made for them in this respect. They will also not receive any special treatment in the race. “As organisers, our primary concern is the safety of all participants and as a matter of urgency we will be consulting with various role players in a
process of reassessing our medical, technical, safety and security and logistical arrangements to determine possible impacts and necessary adjustments which we may need to implement in order to ensure there is no compromise to the well-being of all participants.
“We anticipate that Comrades runners and supporters will embrace this positive development in the spirit of camaraderie and humility, which is unique to the ‘Ultimate Human Race’,” said Chitja. - Supplied.

“There are many variations of this type of scam, but the most common one is when someone drops an envelope with money inside or cash in a plastic bank bag on the floor. “The victim will pick up the envelope or plastic bag thinking it is his or her lucky day. The perpetrator will then follow the victim. After a while they will confront the victim pretending to be police officers and produce a fake appointment certificate. “The perpetrators will convince the victim that they will share the money while they convince him or her to go with them to a private place. Heaven is a place on Earth KALISHA NAICKER HEAVENS Kitchen 3610 is a humanitarian organisation that feeds the hungry and homeless in the Pinetown area. Since its inception in 2014, it has fed vulnerable people every Thursday evening through donations from companies and individuals. Speaking to the Fever Kayleigh Symes said: “We are motivated by biblical scriptures that command us to ‘love others as ourselves’ (John 13:34) by meeting the needs of others, materially, spiritually and morally,” she said. “We have also seen many religious and co-operated organisations do the same and we are inspired to toe the same line to help in the eradication of poverty, although not entirely.” She said there are no restrictions to membership, but only kind-hearted people who are ready to give freely are welcome. “You don’t have to be rich to get in-
volved. A partner of Heavens Kitchen is someone who is capable of mobilising needed resources for the effective implementation of the project.” “It is our mission to feed and love the homeless and destitute in a broken society. We do, however, require donors and sponsors as our aim is geared towards reaching the homeless and needy even beyond the borders of Durban,” said Symes. Heavens Kitchen is currently running a blanket and goodie bag drive. “We need 100, single-bed blankets and items for the goodie bag such as bath soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, green soap bar, candles, matches, chips and treats.”

IS love for helping the community began in 1994 while living in Ndlane in Richmond. Israel Ngubo (44), NGO Power Line Youth and Educational Trust founder, said he used to teach pupils speech and drama, music and cultural dance, however, he saw that many came from disadvantaged families and his passion for assisting impoverished people grew. “When my mother died in 1991 things were not easy for our family because I had to learn how to be responsible and do things on my own. “I began teaching children cultural dance, speech and drama and everything pertaining to the performing arts. In 2001 I got a job at Woolworths in Kloof where I lived and later moved to Wyebank. “I noticed that many people in the community were very poor and I began to collect clothes to give to them.
Even though I helped people under Power Line - it was only registered in 2002. “At that time the government encouraged community members to start non-profit-organisations to help people who are unable to help themselves. By then Power Line was well known and people came forward pleading for help.” Power Line’s focus is feeding the hungry and donating clothes to those who need it. “I don’t even know how many people we have on our list because there are so many. We work in conjunction with Woolworths, Mr Price and Tabernacle Church in Wyebank where we provide members with provide food every Friday. “We also donate shoes and stationery. HE all-new Ford Focus RS has won Car of the Year at the prestigious 2016 Vehicle Dynamics International (VDI) Awards. The Ford Performance team that developed the widely-acclaimed highperformance hatchback also has won Dynamics Team of the Year at the VDI Awards. A jury of 23 independent automotive journalists from around the world praised the Focus RS for “handling characteristics the opposition can’t match” and its “pure driving pleasure”. The Focus RS pioneers innovative Ford Performance All Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring for a new level of handling, grip and cornering speed. Selectable Drive Modes – including an industry-first Drift Mode that allows controlled oversteer drifts – and Launch Control feature on the RS model for the first time. Demand for the high-performance hatchback is accelerating fast, with 6,200 vehicles already ordered by European customers – almost double Ford expectations – and the Nitrous Blue paint colour among the most popular options. “We set the bar high for the Focus RS, to deliver a world-beating hot hatch worthy of the Rallye Sport badge with the most exhilarating and dynamic RS driving experience yet,” said Tyrone Johnson, vehicle engineering manager, Ford Performance. “Ford Performance is honoured to receive two awards from Vehicle Dynamics International, and proud to have developed a car that sets new standards for affordable hot hatch performance.” The annual VDI awards recognise

The Ford Focus. the best ideas, technology innovation and achievements in vehicle dynamics development. Ford now has won six VDI awards – more than any other manufacturer – including four Dynamics Team of the Year awards. This year’s double success follows a similar achievement in 2013, when Ford won Dynamics Team of the Year and Ford vehicle dynamics specialist David Put won Dynamicist of the Year. The Focus RS is the first Ford vehicle to win in the Car of the Year category. Developed by Ford Performance
engineers in Europe and the U.S., the model is powered by a specially engineered version of Ford’s 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivering 350 PS, and sprints from 0-100 km/h (0.62 mph) in 4.7 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating Ford RS model ever. Jurors said of the Focus RS: · “... Ford’s Focus RS has completely rewritten the hot hatch rulebook,” Alvaro Sauras, Autofácil/EVO, Spain “Ford Focus RS is… by far the most entertaining to drive owing to neutral and oversteer handling characteristics that the opposition can’t match,” Nicol Louw, CAR magazine, South Af-
GMSA supports vital skills base for the automotive industry AS manufacturing industries have become more and more dependent on computerised and robotic machinery, the need to align its skills base has also increased. To this end, General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has been partnering with the local university, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), to ensure the required skills are developed for motor manufacturing in Port Elizabeth. According to GMSA’s Training and Organisational Development Manager, Wayne Osborne, the eight year sponsorship of the Chair in Mechatronics at the NMMU is vital in enabling the institution to contribute meaningfully towards the manufacturing industry’s requirements. Mechatronics combines a number of aspects of engineering, including mechanical and electrical engineering, robotics, programming and computer-aided design. NMMU is the only university in the Eastern Cape offering a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechatronics. GMSA’s support for the Chair in Mechatronics also includes the opportunity for students to complete their inservice training at the company, participating in GMSA projects and acquiring critical on-the-job training and experience. “We make extensive use of mechatronics engineering skills in our plants, which are highly mechanised and use robotic systems. The company has employed several graduates from the programme and will continue to do so in future.”
rica “The Focus RS simply rewrites the rulebook for how sporting hatchbacks behave. The combination of handling prowess, safety and security, and the sheer hooliganism of Drift Mode blends performance and pure driving pleasure like few cars ever have,” Jim Kenzie, Toronto Star, Canada Jurors said of the Ford Performance team: · “… when the Blue Oval skunkworks teams are let off the leash, magic inevitably follows,” Brian Cowan, motoring writer, New Zealand. Focus RS arrives with customers
Full production of the Focus RS – also crowned 2016 Car of the Year by Top Gear magazine, U.K. – is under way at Ford’s Saarlouis, Germany assembly plant and the first cars are now arriving with Ford Performance fans across the region. The initial wave of European orders reveals that the signature Nitrous Blue paint colour has been selected by more than half of all Focus RS customers, making it more than three times as popular as the second favourite colour choice, Frozen White. Reflecting the car’s high-performance nature, more than 50 per cent of customers have opted for the distinctive RS Recaro shell front seats offering increased lateral support for fast road and track driving, while 60 per cent have specified the lightweight forged alloy wheels finished in low-gloss black that offer enhanced strength and impact resistance, with weight savings of 950 g per wheel. The most popular option of all is the RS blue paint finish for the powerful Brembo brake callipers, chosen by more than two-thirds of Focus RS customers. The all-new Focus RS is spearheading a new era of growth in performance Fords for Europe, with sales this year expected to increase by 50 per cent compared with 2015, which in turn saw performance car sales rise by 61 per cent compared with 2014. Alongside models like the Fiesta ST, new Fiesta ST200, Focus ST, Ford Mustang and Ford GT supercar, Focus RS will contribute to sales of 40,000 performance cars for Europe in 2016. - Supplied
