A number of reasons to celebrate
5 May 2016
MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. FRICA Bike Week has come and gone, but the debate about whether it
even suggested that it should be a bikers-only event and should be closed to the “hordes of locals”. On a Facebook page that calls itself “Africa Bike Week -

Margate”, Robert Vogt posted, “I loved it. Was thrilling. Lots of security. Lots of clean toilets. Area was clean. Didn’t go for the stalls, but for the camaraderie and found it. I haven’t seem that many Harleys near Harties ever. Fantastic mass ride! Never felt threatened, only friendliness. Well done organisers!” Gwilym John Howes posted: “The smallest, most washed up, dismal version of this once great event to date. If the trend continues, there will not be a Bike Week in a year or two. And if this is what it is going to be going forward, that is no loss. What happened? Where were all the dealerships? the Jack Daniels Stage? Really weak. Not worth the ride from North West.” CEO for Ugu South Coast Tourism said the event went very well. “We are not aware of any incidents that took place and the organisers commented that they were pleased with the improvement on security and the quality of ablutions for visitors.” As far as logistics are concerned, Mackrory could not comment as Harley-Davidson would only have completed a compilation of this by next week. “I can say that over 8 000 people pre-registered to attend the event. Retailers and the organisers are happy with the success of the event,” he said. With regard to queries as to why there was no Jack Daniel’s tent, Mackrory said the organisers were aware of the complaints and would certainly look into it for the next Africa Bike Week. “From tourism side, it certainly was not a down-scale in budget. “We have a contract with Harley-Davidson and the same amount is injected into the event as per the contract.”

T’S only natural these days to resort to social media the moment something life-changing happens, however when it comes to crime incidents, these must be reported to your
nearest police station as well. There are several groups on Facebook where people tell of how they were robbed, hijacked or have became victims of theft. Many say they don’t report the incidents because “the police won’t do anything about it anyway”.

However SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, advises otherwise. “It is of the utmost importance that all criminal activities and incidents are reported to the nearest police station. Any victim of crime has the right to open a criminal case and that a thor-

The incidents occurred at a farm in Oslo Beach recently and detectives are appealing to the public to come forward with information regarding the crimes. “There has been a spate of theft of pigs from a farm in Oslo Beach recently. The police need any information relating to the cases,” said police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid.

The complainant reported that pigs are being taken from a pen, slaughtered and then carried away by the perpetrators. “Although spoor has been picked up by Port Shepstone K9 unit dogs, the police dogs could only detect the spoor up to a certain point,” said Wiid. Anyone with information regarding the stolen pigs or pork meat being sold, must contact Constable Rouen Govender on 039 688 1090 or 076 465 5552. - Supplied.

Business breakin still being investigated CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com ABOUT R100 000 worth of equipment was stolen from Nashua in Port Shepstone last Sunday and the perpetrators are still at large. “No arrests have been made yet and investigations are ongoing,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. There have been no other business break-ins in the Port Shepstone CBD with the same modus operandi. Three men entered the building at about 5.30am, which immediately set

off the alarm. A security guard also notified police about suspicious activity in the premises prior to the break-in, however SAPS did not show up. The guard then contacted SAPS again when the break-in was in progress, but they only responded two and a half hours later, after the owner of the business called to report the incident. The break-in occurred within four minutes and the men fled in a car. Before fleeing, one of the perpetrators climbed onto a desk and ripped the alarm siren off.
PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede MNAFU Hall in Umzumbe Municipality Ward 19 went up in flames in the early hours of Monday morning. The cause of the fire is still unknown and Hibberdene SAPS are investigating. Umzumbe Municipality mayor Sydney Gumede said it is shocking that the hall could be burnt like this. “There was no unrest in the area and nothing was suspected to be a problem in the community,” said Gumede. Umzumbe spokesperson
Trevor Khanyile said the fire services were called to the scene by community members at 3am. “Fire and rescue services arrived at the scene and found the hall engulfed in fire. “Fortunately, there was no one in the hall,” he said. Khanyile said it was not the first time this happened. “This is the second time that a hall has been burnt by unknown individuals. The KwaHlongwa hall Ward 14 was also burnt without reason.” Khanyile said there is never a reason to validate the burning of a community facility.
“If the SAPS do not receive the complaints, we will not have an exact database of where and when certain crimes occur and therefore cannot do the necessary strategic planning to try to address those crimes,” said Wiid. She said reported incidents of crime are being monitored at cluster level on a daily basis and the necessary tasking to address those hot spots are given to the relevant role players. “Complainants, who are not satisfied with the progress of the investigation in their cases, are urged to bring it to the attention of the relevant station commanders or to the office of the cluster commander.” Contact details, 039 688 1027/1031, fax 039 688 1196 and email kzn.ugu. clstrcmdr@saps.gov.za
Community justice cases on the rise PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com THERE has been a increase in reported cases where communities take the law into their own hands and beat suspected criminals. Recently, a man suspected of stealing in Gamalakhe, was assaulted to death by community members who said the police do nothing when a crime is reported. Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed the Gamalakhe incident and said two men were arrested for his death. Mfeka condemned mob justice saying the community should always report to the nearest police station if they have a problem with a criminal in their community. “It is against the law for the community to beat a person up if he or she does wrong. Those people can also be arrested for taking the law into their own hands. Mob justice is never a solution,” said Mfeka. He said similar cases were reported elsewhere. “Recently in Gcilima, a similar incident took place where a rape suspect that was being sought by police was killed,” said Mfeka. He said the body of the suspect was found in the woods not far from his home. Before being killed the suspect had allegedly raped a seven-year-old boy and was on the run. “Five men were arrested in this case - four of them were later released, one of the suspects is still in police custody,” said Mfeka. He said police are doing their best to pass the message across to communities - “they must stop taking the law into their own hands”.

Whoonga users infiltrate Sheppie taxi ranks ANY whoonga smokers young and middle-aged - sit in taxi rank corners as they become addicted to the mind-controlling drug, it has been reported. Port Shepstone Taxi Rank is one of the most whoonga-populated areas on the South Coast as male and female smokers puff and pass around pieces of tinfoil, used to smoke the drug. Port Shepstone police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said police officers are aware of this and are working around the clock to fight this activity. Wiid said many arrests have been made, especially those who sell the drug. Fever spoke to Port Shepstone Recovery Centre about the number of whoonga smokers they are helping. Sunny Nagia, centre supervisor said every week they get over 15 walkins, many of whom want to get clean, but many, unfortunately, don’t finish the programme, and leave. Paul Sanele Bors from Gamalakhe, a former whoonga addict has been clean for over 21 days and says he is determined he will not go back again. Bors said he is glad to part of Port Shepstone Recovery Centre and being in the centre has changed his life. “Smoking whoonga is not like smoking cigarettes, the drug controls one’s mind and spirit and it turns one into an animal.” Bors explained how whoonga is smoked. “Whoonga is a mix of heroin, Ratex and a number of other ingredients, mixed with dagga. Bors said prayer and admitting you have a problem are the first steps to recovery. “I decided to get help because I could see I was going to get arrested or I was going to die.”
A MAN, who frequents the N2 near Bhobhoyi, has noticed a that stream of water has flowed along the road (near Kulucrete) for over a year and Ugu District Municipal ity is yet to attend to it. “It’s definitely a leaking pipe and it really cannot be missed. Imagine all that clean, drinking water that is being wasted,” he said. “Ugu has imposed these re strictions and rules, but they need to attend to these leaks in order to save water.” He said municipal vehicles travel along the same road daily and it is hard to miss. “Why wait for someone to contact the call centre and report it when staff themselves must have noticed this persistent leak?” Spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality, France Zama, con firmed that there is a leak, but it was not drinking water. “The water from the leak does not reach the Bhobhoyi plant and is not purified. It is not for con sumption.” He said repairing the pipe is not straightforward and will re quire the entire plant to be shut down. “In order for the leak to stop, the plant will have to be shut down for two days to three days. This will affect customers from Hibberdene to Ramsgate and some areas of Gamalakhe, Murschison and KwaMadlala,” said Zama. Ugu plans to conduct repairs in midMay. “Ugu will inform its customers when this repair is being imple mented, which will require their full cooperation,” he added.

best advice on meal preparation and perceived value for money. Since these awards started 11 years ago, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers show that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval, most importantly because a butchery cannot enter itself, it has to be nominated by its customers. Cleaver Award winners have
come to realise the extent to which a Cleaver Award is recognition of quality in everything they do. Nominations were opened towards the end of last year for consumers around the country to vote and nominate their best butchery. A record number of nominations, totalling over 35 000 were received, a phenomenal feat when one considers that 3 500 nominations were received when the competition first launched in 2005. Butchers were judged according to three categories - butcheries with four or more till points, butcheries with three or fewer till points and food market and/or supermarket butcheries. Michael Frey’s, Shelly Beach won the in the “up to three tills” category, while Pick n Pay Shelly Centre won in the supermarket category. Both winners in each category received platinum awards. Firstprize winners in each national category received a R20 000 cash prize and a platinum trophy award. Runners- up received a R10 000 cash prize as well as a gold Cleaver Award trophy. All provincial winners received either a platinum or gold Cleaver Award trophy in their category. - Supplied.
HCM adopts coastal management plan AT a council meeting on Tuesday, the Hibiscus Coast Municipality Coastal Management Plan was approved. This was subsequent to public consultation, which sought to filter the information to relevant structures with the view of obtaining the by-in of stakeholders. “In approving this plan, Hibiscus Coast Municipality is of the view that this will facilitate a co-ordinated, collaborative and participatory management of the municipality’s coastal zone,” said HCM Mayor Cllr Nomusa Mqwebu. Mqwebu said through this plan, HCM also intends to facilitate the improvement of institutional structures and capacity to respond to existing environmental management gaps and define roles and responsibilities as outlined in the National Environmental Management Act: Integrated Coastal Management Act, of 2008. “The ultimate purpose of the programme is to ensure that the coastal zone is sustainably managed so that existing and potential harmful effects are minimised, and access to this precious resource is enabled for all citizens of South Africa and the Hibiscus Coast,” she said. - Supplied.

The chamber’s new president, Vijay Naidoo, said the chamber is stronger than ever after going through some rough times and is ready to be the partner of choice to key stakeholders it is involved with. “The short-term imperative of the chamber is the stabilisation of the organisation and the replenishment of its resources in terms of its executive and membership.” He said this will be done by reestablishing and reinforcing relationships with key stakeholders, including the membership, local

THE Keshivan Medical Trust has already achieved more than half of its target through kind-hearted community members who hosted fund-raising events and sponsorships from donors. In February, a committee and trust fund was set up to assist with various projects to make Jason and Charmaine Govender’s dream of seeing their threeyear-old son, Keshivan, lead a normal life, come true. The objective is to achieve the financial target so the toddler can get treatment. Keshivan was born with Spastic cerebral palsy, which stem cell treatment at the Shenzhein Beike Biotechnology Co. Ltd associated hospitals in Thailand are able to render. “Keshivan cannot crawl or sit up on his own, he has just started to have some head control and he has to be fed as he has no hand-mouth co-ordination. He does not follow objects with his eyes, he depends on sound to respond when someone speaks to him. He weighs about 12kgs. We have to carry him around as he cannot walk,” said the parents. At the end of April, R328 202 had been raised. The target is R500 000. Events held so far include a car show by Nitro Crew and Street Assassins, a tea party hosted by Port Shepstone Andhra Sabha, a fun walk hosted by Umbango River Conservancy and a tuck shop at schools’ volleyball knock-out tournament. The next fund-raiser takes the form of a dinner and dance by Disco Audio Exclusive at Scottburgh Town Hall on 7 May at 6pm. Tickets cost R200 per couple. Call 072 031 9882 or 076 865 7825 for details. The Dingalings will host a comedy evening at Port Shepstone Civic Centre on 21 May at 7.30pm. Tickets cost R100. Call 072 202 4242 or 083 357 3876. COUPLE who embarked on a mammoth challenge - to run the entire coastline of KZN in 30 days, completed the trek last Saturday. Radio personality and businesswoman Phindi Gule-Burley and her husband Kevin Burley started the “Run KZN with Us” campaign on 1 April at Kosi Bay, near the Mozambican border, and ran 900km to Port Edward. They ran 30kms a day with a water break every three kilometres in an effort to raise funds for children living at the Liv Village children’s home in Verulam. The couple reached the 870km mark on Friday and rested at the
Caribbean Estates in Port Edward. Phindi previously had told sister publication Weekend Witness that until she started the quest, it had seemed “almost impossible to achieve”. On Friday she said she learnt that hard work pays off. “I always thought about the children when I felt challenged along the journey. I have a Liv Village band on

With 96 homes currently catering for 160 children, the couple aim to fund one home for 10 children for a year and will need to raise at least R120 000.

PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com ELDERCARE Training Centre awarded eight trainees certificates after they completed their one-week training. Morgie Gerrish, a professional eldercare trainer, said the trainees did well and they can’t wait to begin their practicals. Training took place at Cansa Port Shepstone offices and trainees will be
placed as soon as clients request their services. Gerrish said the training does not guarantee placement, however, they try their best to get an assignment place for the trainees. Sesethu Senene from Cansa congratulated the trainees. “Cansa South Coast congratulates the students who completed their training. We look forward to hosting Eldercare again in the future.”
Blood donation drive in Marburg THE Port Shepstone Sai Centre will host a blood donor clinic on Sunday, 15 May at Marburg Primary from 9.30am to 3pm. Donors in Port Shepstone and surrounding areas are urged to support the drive. There is currently a
critical shortage of blood and each pint donated can save many lives. For more details contact Sundeep on 073 509 8575 or Mags on 072 884 8474. - Supplied.

Food FEVER 7 prices escalate dramatically south coast

I
T’S common knowledge that the price of food has increased drastically in recent months and the reason for this is the drought, but exactly how much has your basic grocery basket items escalated by? According to Stats SA, South African consumers paid an average of 9.8% more for their groceries this March than they did in March 2015. This is the highest year-on-year rise since February 2012. Fruit and vegetables have risen 18.7% with tomatoes, pumpkins and bananas going up the most. Oils and fats has seen an 18.1% increase followed by bread and cereal, which have gone up by 13.3%. Sugar and desserts have also seen a rise of
11.7%, fish by 6.4%, meat by 6.1% and dairy by 3.6%. Clothing and footwear increased by 4.8%, transport by 4.5% and housing and utilities went up by 6.4%. In a recent article written by Christie Viljoen, financial risk manager at KPMG in South Africa, the country will have to import up to half of its grain in 2016. This is a problem as the rand is sitting at a record low. During 2015, the South African Weather Services recorded an average rainfall of 403mm, the lowest since records started being kept 50 years ago. The government’s crop estimates committee says this level of rain will result in an almost 25% decline in grain harvest. Although the reserve bank hiked interest rates in January, many economists are far from positive about the prospect of the rand in 2016.

PORT Shepstone Lions ran another diabetes testing clinic at Harbour View SuperSpar on Saturday. A total of 120 people were tested, with 52 people’s readings being higher than the normal reading. “The club extends their sincere appreciation to Harbour View SuperSpar management for providing the venue and to Lion Lady Sister Debbie Marshall for her assistance and supervision of the tests,” said club PRO, Denis Meyer. The club will run regular diabetes testing clinics and aims to raise awareness for diabetes, which is called the “silent killer”. - Supplied.

MICHAEL FREY’S FRESH MEAT INSIDE STORE
Business sector must take the lead >> Hibiscus Coast is at a crossroad right now BUSINESS REPORTER
A
PRACTICAL and positive approach to tackling tough situations dictates that the current reality, no matter how ominous, must be faced head on while never losing hope that a lasting solution or positive outcome will be forthcoming. Let’s not fool ourselves – the Hibiscus Coast is at a crossroad right now. If radical efforts are not made to ad-
dress youth unemployment (37%), income inequality (45% of all those employed earn less than R2 000 per month), lack of affordable housing (backlog of 35 000 housing units) as well as infrastructure maintenance, nobody will want to be here. International tourists will not want to be here. Holidaymakers will not want to be here and existing permanent residents will not want to be here. If you believe that this sounds
alarmist or over dramatic, consider what two well respected gentlemen had to say recently. Our statisticiangeneral, Pali Lahohla, is not a man given to exaggeration. On releasing his report “Social Profile of Youth” he referred to the prospects for the youth in this country as “a cocktail of disasters”. When asked about the possible downgrading of South Africa’s investment status, former governor of the SA Reserve Bank, Tito Mboweni, said: “A
New car won at Wild Coast

5 May 2016 dark cloud, mist or fog is gathering upon us as a country.” You don’t get much more ominous than that. The risk we face is that we do nothing because we become desensitised to the socioeconomic symptoms of these problems. We become desensitised to violent crime. We become desensitised to poverty and homelessness. We become desensitised to failing infrastructure and the destruction of property. The risk we face is that we do nothing because “they” (whoever “they” are) must sort it out. The reality is that there is no “they” who will sort things out. The business sector, as the key driver of economic growth in the region, has to play the leading role in eradicating poverty and fostering an inclusive society. A dynamic business sector is a prerequisite for economic growth, poverty reduction, income generation and the creation of decent jobs for all but especially the youth. The ball is not with the gov-

ernment, although it obviously has a role to play. The ball is not with law enforcement although they have a job to do – the ball is with the business sector. Unless this region bucks the national trend and achieves sustainable economic growth of around five percent pa (growth in the region amounted to 0.96% in 2015) we are headed down a slippery slope to social unrest and lawlessness. This is not an issue of politics, it is a socioeconomic reality. With everything that this region has to offer, it will be an indictment on all of us if this is allowed to happen. This may not be a responsibility that the business sector anticipated. It may not be a responsibility that the average business owner views as fair – fact is, who else is going to do it? Who has the most to lose if it doesn’t happen?

A patient, positive attitude will set the tone for turning away from corrective training which relies on forcing the dog into obeying you, resulting in a chain of confusion, distrust and a breakdown in the human-canine bond. To get your dog’s attention and compliance you need to become a source of all good things – walks, play, grooming, toys, affection, treats and meals. Decide on one or two actions you would like your dog to do, such as ‘sit’ or ‘down’, and then teach these cues by rewarding her with a high value treat, something she will find irresistible. That way the act of complying with your requests will be associated with rewards that make her feel good; it will activate the ‘searching’ centre in her brain and she will be giving you her attention when you need it. Once she is responding reliably, gradually begin to fade out the chosen reward by treating intermittently only. Remember some dogs may be better motivated with toys, play, praise or an affectionate pat, rather than with edible treats. Your dog isn’t unintelligent. She’s just a different species with different needs and another language. To live in harmony together, we need to make an effort to understand this and be sure we are playing our part. You can do this with your dog by fulfilling her innate needs. Make sure there is adequate companionship, exercise and stimulation. There are many effective ways of teaching the behaviours that you find lacking. - Susan Henderson© (accredited animal behaviourist)

A FEW years ago, a seaside town on the south-east coast of England hosted an annual festival, which, to all intents and purposes, kept the town’s tourism profile and economy intact and in the summer, the town retained its seasonal popularity. ers in their terraced houses and similar mentality added their often unsubstantiated opinions on the internet and the town was being talked down by the very people whose local economy depended a great deal on tourism. Unfortunately, for the town the marketing executives, representing the principal event sponsor while scouring the internet to assess the publicity value of the festival, also noted the negativity emanating from its locals. The rest is history, the sponsors took their money to the west of the UK, the event did not manage to secure confidence from new sponsors, was canned and the tourist decided to go have beach holidays in other parts of Kent, Devon, Corn-
in leisure and tourism. In the U.S. they have numerous spring break festivals for thousands of exuberant students and through tough enforcement and controls have turned many destinations into multi-million-dollar recipients of tourism revenues which revert to the local businesses. One seldom sees a seaside town in Florida being assassinated on the internet by locals. They see the value, join hands with the authorities and adopt a positive approach to their event programmes. Their winning approach is the way to go because the big sponsors see their towns as places to do business with and promote in. Even in the good old RSA event successes abound - why? Because of a can-do, want-to-do approach and it is catchy. We on the South Coast are an ideal events destination so I guess the U.S. way is the only approach we should embrace for our paradise.

Radical transformation instils fear and favour in voters THE marking of 21 years of democracy last year gave political parties the opportunity to debate “Consolidation of freedom through accelerating radical economic transformation” in a joint sitting of Parliament. The result was as diverse as the opinions on what the real definition is. Politically the goal is to obtain a vote with a promise of change for the better. Every citizen must believe that interventions by his or her chosen party
will bring relief to his /her need. Most people want to be free. Free of debt, free of responsibility, free of pain and ageing. We all want to tour the world care free for the rest of our lives. Unless you are a top politician, government cannot provide this sort of freedom. A clear definition of the result of transformation is needed for the voter to believe it and vote for it.
The fear of transformation comes from the fear of losing value. The down turn in the economy, morality, safety, education, production and profit creates the idea that current transformation causes more loss of value to the country than value gains. The value of the rand reflects our current value compared to other countries. It is now 2.5 % of what it was. It seems to be the price we pay for the short-term favour politicians gain

through “radical” interventions. The political focus on racial transformation creates the idea that excluding, barring or extracting white people and foreigners from all levels of the economy, sport and politics and property will elevate inclusion of a specific group of black people in the void that is created. Such inclusion is expected to bring prosperity, happiness and healing to all and result in trust and love for the
The bubble has burst on the political landscape TODAY’S political landscape is a metaphorical reminder of Hans Christian Andersen’s story about a vain king who was so fond of new clothes and his appearance that he spent all his time and money on being well-dressed and parading himself in public, caring nothing about the state of his nation. One day, two swindlers came to town and pretended to be able to weave the finest cloth, which couldn’t be seen by anyone who was either unfit for office, or who
was unusually stupid. The king had a suit made of this wonderful cloth and, not wanting to appear unfit to rule or stupid himself, pretended to be able to see the new clothes, as did all of his ministers and courtiers. He paraded his new clothes through the streets and the onlookers, also not wishing to appear unfit for their positions or stupid, all admired them until a little child said: “But he hasn’t got anything on.”
Soon all the onlookers were repeating what the child said and the bubble of pretence burst while the king continued the procession, attempting to maintain his dignity by pretending nothing had happened. Current affairs in our country give meaning to the tale’s theme of a context in which certain people are widely acclaimed and admired until someone starts to question whether what they have done or created is real or of any value. The initial lone voice of reason,
once seen for its veracity, is then rapidly taken up by others and becomes a crescendo of voices now clamouring for the obvious truth. I will credit Julius Malema, in this instance, for being that lone voice and commend him for having the courage of his convictions to speak out and take action against President Jacob Zuma long before it was as fashionable to do so as it is increasingly today. A. Strachan

government and for the country. A person who believes in the openended contract offered by politicians in exchange for a vote during these coming elections must at least spend some time on the internet and get some perspective. Look at what is happening in the world and how politics and greed is killing the world. I am yet to meet a politician who has a clear vision, that is constitutional, achievable and who knows how to achieve it. I will vote for such a person. Clueless
Cosatu, rogue element? IT comes as no surprise that 58 549 workers are going to lose their jobs this year. I recently purchased two very basic items — a simple sun hat and an equally basic mosquito net. Getting home, I was shocked to find that both were made in China. It would seem that Cosatu is determined to drive costs up, and their numbers down, so that even the most simple items can be imported more cheaply from overseas. According to chief economist Mike Schussler, South Africa will soon have 10 million unemployed workers. Just what is the ANC up to? Is this an election ploy that’s gone horribly wrong, or has Cosatu become a rogue element totally beyond the control of Luthuli House? Barrie Lewis Pietermaritzburg

BINNEPRET
JOHAN PRETORIUS
D

Hierdie bly in Jesus is ’n lewenslange proses.
If you loved Him more, you would have painted Him better.” Skryf hierdie tyd in jou dagboek neer, of skryf daar “God”. Goeie dinge kom in die stil tye in mens se lewe - die tye saam met God. Ken jy sulke tye?

there’s oodles of places to take your mom on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is about sharing time together and that is the most precious gift of all, and eating. • Surprise - there’s nothing better than family and friends arriving with smiles and laughter and a surprise slap-up breakfast of all my favourite goodies. (This has not happened yet, but I am forever hopeful - crossing fingers and toes). I’m thinking great coffee and some buttery croissant French toast. Then a plate of Eggs Benedict and silky Hollandaise, it’s really simple to make - try my “Cheat’s Hollandaise”, it’s fool-proof and delicious. • Home-made treats - how cool would it be to open up a box filled with dark chocolate truffles that your son or daughter has made? I would just platz. They’re quick and fun to make and you can jazz them up with things like nuts and booze to suit your mom’s taste. Pretty wrapping: either wrap them in a pretty paper parcel tied with ribbon (lay the balls in the middles of a large square of paper and just pull up the four corners and tie), or place them in a box in baby cupcake cups with rose petals - simply gawjus. • Home-made pamper session run your mom a hot bath and pop in some lavender, honey, olive oil and lemon rind (all not hard to find at home). This is a calming bath with a soothing scent and the olive oil leaves your skin feeling soft and beautiful. Make her some revitalising ginger tea (a glass of cold champers would be my choice) and send her off for some alone time. While she’s languishing in the fragrant steam, whip up a batch of Rolocentred chocolate brownie muffins, they only take 20 minutes to bake and the house will smell like chocolate heaven. • Bake - Mother’s Day is a free-for-allthe-fat-in-theworld-day for me, so bake away people and present your ol’ mom with anything baked and delicious and she will thank you for it. Do you need a handyman or contractor? >> Even the savviest DIYers sometimes require assistance with home maintenance, repair or improvement projects

HERE are plenty of homeowners and renters who need jobs done in and around the home. Even the savviest DIYers sometimes require assistance with home maintenance, repair or improvement projects, especially if their time is limited and they don’t want to go to the expense of investing in tools they don’t already own. If you don't stay on top of your home repairs, you’ll find that these soon start to pile up, and delaying certain repairs could result in more damage and increased costs. When it comes to home maintenance, many homeowners are not sure if they should hire a handyman or contractor. Both offer a variety of services and the major factor determining which one to call depends on
the type of job that needs to be done. When to call a handyman A reputable handyman offers a wide variety of services that can include everything from changing a tap washer to replacing a light fitting. Hiring a handyman who is capable of handling a variety of small jobs is just the thing for those who don't have a DIY bone in their body, or the time to take on home repairs and maintenance. If you don't have a family member or friend to call on for help, schedule a call out for a local handyman to sort out small fix ups. Before you hire a handyman, however, it is recommended that you check up on previous jobs done and whether or not clients were satisfied with the services provided. Checking references is also a

good way for you to feel safe about letting someone into your home. Since most handymen have a standard call out fee and charge by the hour, try to schedule more than one project that can be done in a day, or compile a “to do” list of maintenance tasks and repairs. With the exception of in-the-wall electrical and plumbing installations, where a Compliance Certificate is required, handymen are great for general repairs and odd jobs. It is important to avoid hiring a handyman without first checking references. Also, be wary of any handymen that ask for payment up front. For larger jobs, ask for a written agreement that details the job, the cost and the payment schedule, and make sure to get a written guarantee. When to hire a general contractor General contractors provide services for a variety of larger, specific tasks. From a homeowner’s point of view, it makes more sense to employ a contractor for a specific job like employing a waterproofing specialist for roof leaks, a building contractor for any masonry projects or an electrician or plumber for home works. When hiring a contractor, always do your homework, especially considering that you may be spending a lot of money on a project. It is in your interests to obtain at least three quotations and to check references for previous work done. Additionally, and as with a handyman, be wary of any contractors that ask for payment up front. While a deposit is acceptable (after checking references), payments should only be given at specific stages of a larger project, and by prior agreement. Before hiring a contractor ask for full disclosure for any guarantees for the work done. You want to make sure you are covered for any damages or repairs that may occur once the contractor leaves the job site. – Supplied.

New Ford Ranger wins Double Cab of the Year title F ORD Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has added two more awards to its burgeoning trophy cabinet with the new Ford Ranger and the new Ford Everest being voted the top vehicles in their respective segments by Drive Out-WegRy in its 2016 4x4 of the Year Awards. “As one of South Africa’s biggest 4x4 and overlanding magazines, the publication has a large following amongst off-road enthusiasts, and it is fantastic for two of our most important new models to dominate the Double Cab and SUV categories in its 2016 4x4
of the Year awards,” says Tracey Delate, general marketing manager, FMCSA. The Ford Ranger 3.2 TDCi XLT won the Double Cab of the Year title. The new Ranger was launched in October last year, boasting a fresh new design, a sophisticated all-new interior with SYNC®2 and an 8-inch touchscreen display, advanced Electric Power Assisted Steering, improved quality and refinement, as well as enhanced fuel economy. While the Ranger has topped the highly competitive overall light commercial vehicle sales on three occasions over the past six months, and was FALCON TYRE CENTRE the top-seller for six out of Port Shepstone - Tel: 039 682 5385/76 12 months last year, it has Open Monday - Sunday and Holidays dominated the popular

double cab sector since 2014. “We know that the local double-cab 4x4 market is a hotly contested one, which makes the Ranger’s dominance even more remarkable,” said Jaco Kirsten, editor of Drive Out / WegRy. “The Ranger’s 3.2 litre Duratorq engine has already proved itself, and while the refreshed engine still develops the same amount of power as before, fuel consumption is improved. “The gearbox is also improved, but the biggest improvement has been the interior, which really impressed our staff. Then there are other attributes such as proven off-road ability and fresh, eye-catching styling,” Kirsten said. The all-new Ford Everest was another product that left a huge impression on the Drive Out / WegRy panel. Launched in September last year,

and value-for money. “We always expected that the new Everest was going to be a big step forward, but none of us really expected a leap of this magnitude,” Kirsten stated. “Apart from the beautiful styling and luxuriously appointed interior, the Terrain Management off-road system really distinguishes it from all its rivals. In fact, a case can be made that it now competes with some of the more established rivals in a higher, traditionally more expensive segment,” he added. - Supplied.

Weather plays a part in Dezzi biking event Bike versus car.
PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com
S Stuntman Brain Cooper shows his mettle.
PONSORED by the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, in association with Nkosi N Projects and Integrated Concepts and Light the Fire, over the weekend brought biking clubs and motor enthusiasts to Dezzi Raceway in Oslo Beach in celebration of all things biking.
However, bad weather resulted in the event not being well attended on the one day. Sinethemba Dhlomo of Integrated Concepts organising committee said the weather was not on their side. “Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather and the rainy conditions did prove somewhat challenging for performers and spectators on Saturday, but the high calibre of bikers and drivers meant that the stunts were more extreme.”
