MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.
Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

south coast This week ONLINE
Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our
own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

If he or she does commit any other offence he or she cannot be granted bail for that offence,” said Mfeka. Cllr Gumbi also expressed displeasure that a person who might have tried to kill him is out on bail. Cosatu members and Wimpy Margate staff protest. WIMPY owner David Smith declined to comment to the Fever on the recent strike outside the outlet by some of his former employees and union members. The strike could be a threat to business as union leaders and affected staff said they want Wimpy to
close. Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary Mdumiseni Danca said if management continues to exploit workers and undermine the rights of employees they will be left with no option but to embark on more strike action.
“If he continues we will consult with owners of building and sign a petition with CCMA and Department of Labour to issue enforcement orders of trade unions to recruit employees of Wimpy,” said Danca Cosatu members and the staff
SBONGISENI Robert Mpofana (32) appeared in the Ramsgate Regional Court recently where he was convicted for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, murder and intimidation and sentenced to three years, 15 years and six months, respectively. The case was investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Sibusiso Mthethwa of the Gamalakhe SAPS Detective Service. The victim, Phatho Ndaba (43), was walking with a woman in Quinabout Ward, Gamalakhe near the school when Mpofana attacked him with a knife. He sustained four stab wounds in the chest and one in the abdomen. Mpofana fled the scene, but was tracked down by police, and arrested. Major General Sethenya Agnes Nxamagele, the Ugu Cluster Commander, extended her thanks and appreciation to the Gamalakhe SAPS station commander, Captain Mpinge for working with his members and giving them guidance. She also commended Warrant Officer Mthethwa for the excellent investigation that resulted in the successful conviction and sentencing. - Supplied.
who had been dismissed picketed outside recently, demanding that the owner answers their complaints, however, Smith was not at the outlet that day. A few months ago the union met with Smith and they agreed that working conditions and staff complaints would be looked into and that misunderstandings would be resolved and the staff would return to work. Cosatu chair, Ernest Mkhize, said the employer failed to stick to the agreement. “Smith failed to stick to the agreement and he fired three employees immediately after the last meeting we had with him.” He said Smith promised the union that the changing room issue would be resolved and that wages would be discussed and staff will get their normal wages. “Smith did not comply with any of those things. In 2015 employees had a take-home wage of R4 574, and this year their wages were decreased to R1 519 and he did not make any transport arrangements for staff that work late,” he said Under these circumstances, angry union members and staff outside Wimpy sang “Wimpy must fall”. They also told Fever that the municipality should take over the outlet because it is failing.

Margate Ext 3 in need of help >> A community policing forum has to be established CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com
M
ARGATE Extension 3, branded as the area’s crime capital for many years now, needs serious attention. Not only does the area have numerous abandoned houses and properties - many of which are vandalised - crime is rife and both issues seem to linked. According to a resident who has
lived in the area since the 1990s, people from the Eastern Cape purchase houses in Ext 3 because they are cheap. Their intentions are to use these houses as holiday homes or for their children to one day occupy them when they eventually start schooling. Some of these home owners live and work in the Eastern Cape and have no intention of renting out these properties or occupying them permanently
in the near future. This creates an opportunity for criminals to vandalise these homes and use them as places where they either consume or sell drugs, contributing to the area’s escalating crime rate. DA ward councillor, Luwazi Canca, who took reigns of the ward after the last Municipal Elections, says he is busy compiling a rescue plan which he will be implementing step by step. “Firstly, a community policing fo-
rum has to be established. This will comprise of Extensions 3, 7 and the area where Gayridge Poultry Farm Shop is situated. This is of utmost importance,” he said. With regard to vacant houses being vandalised and used as venues for criminal activities, Canca says this will only end if home owners place tenants in the houses. “If they have plans to only occupy these houses in the next couple of years, they can find tenants and offer short term leases in the mean time.” “Vacant stands are also a problem as criminals use these overgrown
plots to hide in and also to hide stolen property. Here, the municipality must urge owners to clean up their plots.” The local Rodolo Park was established by Leonard Rodolo, a community leader in the 90s so that children have a safe place to play. The ward councillor at the time then managed to get ablution facilities built but the park is now ‘non-existent.’ “This park has been vandalised and basically does not exist any more. I will be addressing all these issues and would like the community to join forces with me to make Ext 3 a safe place to live in,” said Canca.

Warning to the public POLICE are concerned about the in creasing number of instances where criminals gain easy access to vehicle keys when they break into homes. Police spokesperson Captain
Vincent Pandarum said the crimi nals use the vehicles that they steal to transport the stolen property. “We would like to advise the public to ensure that the vehicle keys are kept away safely out of sight of any burglar who enter premises. People must also make certain that all doors are securely locked and windows shut when leaving home or going to sleep at
night,” he said. Pandurum said the criminals wait for the slightest op portunity to gain access into peo ples’ homes. “Should anyone observe any motor vehicles or persons under suspicious circumstances in their neighbourhoods, they should con tact the police on 10111 so that po lice can assess the situation for any threat.” Supplied.

The festival will celebrate all things unique about Ramsgate, including books, art exhibitions, museums, wines and antiques. “Last year’s inaugural festival was such a success that the Ramsgate Tourism sub-committee decided it should be an annual event and are looking towards growing this into a annual cultural calendar event over Heritage weekend,” said festival organiser, Vicky Wentzel of Wozani Africa Events. The festival programme consists of 10 guest speakers who will talk on a variety of topics at the Whale Deck in Ramsgate, from 10am to 4pm. In addition there will also be book sales, cuisine and entertainment. Ramsgate Stationers will be selling guest authors’ recent publications as well as a selection of local authors’ works. Festival-goers can expect artisan food stalls, oysters and “bubbly” as well as baked goods. The Ramsgate Knit Twits will also be in attendance supporting their charity “The Comfort Fund”. AS part of the 52nd International Society of City and Regional Planners (Isocarp) congress in Durban this week, planners and technicians gathered at Desroches Hotel in Margate to discuss developmental plans the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has in order to develop some of the areas under them and the challenges the municipality faces. Delegates from Thailand and other countries were part of the conference themed “Cities we have versus cities we need”. The conference incorporated visits to sites that need development as identified by the municipality - Alamein precinct and Masinenge, the Oatlands landfill site and Margate Airport. Staff gave information about the sites and highlighted the challenges they face when it comes to developing them. Ray Nkonyeni Human Settlements senior manager Simphiwe Nikelo did a presentation on the Masinenge and

Alamein precinct settlement saying the area does not have spatial integration between the two settlements in Uvongo and Masinenge. He said the development plan for this area includes that zoning remains the same in the residential area of Uvongo where residential and tourism development is being promoted. "The municipality must therefore institute legal action against owners involved in non-forming land uses,” said Nikelo.
He said the plan is the consolidation of Erf 253 and Erf 1923 and rezoning from “public building” to “low impact mixed use2” as part of developing the commercial and social facilities node. For the Oatlands landfill site, Yandisa Mhlamvu said the site lacks funds especially when it comes to increasing the landfill airspace as stipulated the licence agreement. She said the current airspace extends to July 2017 and in order for it to be compliant it must be upgraded.
Margate Airport was the last site visited and Yolanda Van Rensburg from the airport said one of the challenges at the airport is that of infrastructure to accommodate bigger aircraft. She said as part of the airport’s master plan, they want to establish a strategic direction for efficient economic development and infrastructure development. After the site visits the delegates and department heads returned to Desroches Hotel to discuss the way forward.
Uvongo crime report: house breakins increase CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com HOUSE break-ins increased in Uvongo in August the area’s crime and safety forum reported at it’s monthly meeting recently. “During the month of August we have seen the opposite happening compared to July,” said chairman,
Ernest Booysen. In July, 17 house-breakings were reported. Up until 26 August only 14 incidents had occurred. However, this quickly changed when six more house-breakings took place in the last few days of the month. “During the last five days of the month six more incidents occurred.
The hot-spot area for the month was sector one, sea side of Marine Drive and north of Uvongo River.” About 57% of the incidents happened in sector one, followed by sector two - inland of Marine Drive and north of the river - with 24%. Sector three - inland of Marine Drive and south of the river - attributed to 14% of house break-ins and sec-
tor four (sea side of Marine Drive and south of the river) with only one housebreak incident reported. There were seven incidents between 6pm and midnight, five between midnight and 6am, five between 6am and midday and four from midday to 6pm. Housebreakings occurred on all days of the week except for Mondays.

Cansa’s circusthemed fundraiser
HE circus was in town on Saturday, however it was not the one with ani mals jumping through rings of fire, rather it was community members who came together for the Cansa Relay For Life. This year’s circusthemed event saw col ourful clothing, wigs, banners and balloons fill SuidNatal Primary’s grounds on Satur day afternoon as supporters and teams made their way to the event. The purpose of the event, other than to raise funds for Cansa, was to remember those who have lost the fight to cancer, cel ebrate those who have survived and to fight back against the dreaded disease. The first lap kicked off with cancer survi vors walking around the field. Teams then took to the field with their banners. The rule of the event was that at least one member from each team has walk or run from 2pm to 2am the next day.

EARING loss is about much more than a reduced ability to perceive sound. Whether the loss is gradual or sudden, many people with hearing problems start disconnecting from the world around them. Often, people with hearing loss withdraw from their social lives being too embarrassed to ask family and friends to repeat themselves over and over again. They might be afraid they misunderstand a conversation and answer with wrong or embarrassing comments. You might be suffering from hearing loss and in many cases it happens so gradually, you might not even be aware of it. One of the first signs that your hearing might be deteriorating is difficulty to understand speech in noise. There is hope. The Ear Institute has been treating people with hearing loss for over 40-years. With 22 Ear Institutes across South Africa and Namibia, access to world-class hearing is within everyone’s reach. The Ear Institute offers worldclass hearing care for your family and makes a visit to their facilities hassle-free. From easy access, safe and free parking to a free cup of Ne-

KZN Top Model is a prestigious annual show aimed at uncovering new and raw talent in modelling, fashion and beauty. The search is on for male and female models who can stand out among the rest. Previous winner, Qinisela Masemola in the male category from Gamalakhe is the brand ambassador for the competition and has been given the opportunity to host auditions in his home town for this year’s crowning. Masemola and other judges will attend the auditions at Wesbury College of Science in Port Shepstone on Saturday from 11am to 4pm. Masemola said to secure a spot at the audition the requirements are two pictures - one face and one full length. He also said entrants should have their own costumes for the swimwear category. “Everyone is also required to bring a copy of their matric certificate and identity document. It is also a requirement that the entrants are aged between 18 and 25 for the females and 18 to 30 for males,” said Masemola. For more information, contact Masemola on 078 685 0829.

Board members, staff and attendants at the Khanya Hospice AGM. .
KHANYA Hospice held its annual general meeting last Thursday at Umkomaas. Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald, said it was one of the best attended in a long time. “AGM’s can get long and boring,
but there was a jovial mood and in general people were happy. Even the care givers were included in the proceedings for the first time,” said McDonald. Also present was the chairman, Narend Singh.
“The full board was re-elected and their main objective is to get the in-patient unit going as soon as possible because there is a great need for this,” said McDonald. Khanya Hospice gets at least two phone calls a day from people who
are looking for a bed for a patient. Anyone wanting to partner with Hospice and donate or support this project, can call on 083 597 8985 or send email hospice@scottnet.co.za - Supplied.

WELL-KNOWN MARBURG BUSINESS COUPLE, BEN AND SHANTI SIVNANDAN EMBRACE MORE THAN 27 YEARS OF SUCCESS “The growth and sustenance of Ben’s Supermarket is thanks to our loyal customers” PATRONS of Ben’s Supermarket in Marburg will no longer see the friendly faces of Ben and Shanti Sivnandan when they visit the supermarket next month. They have decided to sell the supermarket. The well-known business couple first opened their fresh produce business in 1989 and six months later, converted it into a supermarket. “The growth and sustenance of Ben’s Supermarket is thanks to our loyal customers who have supported us over the years. The success of the business can be attributed to hard work and dedication,” said Ben. The Marburg Supermarket, a separate store in the same street as Ben’s Supermarket, followed a decade later. The latest addition to Ben and Shanti’s business venture is Ben’s Variety Store which opened 12 years ago. Ben and Shanti extend a special thanks to their friends, family and staff for their continuous support over the years. “On behalf of management and staff we wish to thank you, God bless,” he said.

HE 16th annual Pro Deo Care Group Cycle Ride takes place on Wednesday 14 September. A group of 14 cyclists will take part in the 800km ride starting in Alberton, Gauteng to Southbroom in five days. Each cyclist will be doing just over SEPTEMBER 2016 EDITION 150km a day. Eight of cyclists taking part in the ride are from the South Coast. Six others from Johannesburg, will join them. The ride will finish at Southbroom Golf Club on 18 September. Founder Benny Kruger said he has been riding since the first ride. “It all started 15

years ago when there was a need for those who were not able to care for themselves to be taken care of instead. A group of churches got involved and raised money towards this initiative,” said Kruger. Every year riders get sponsorships individually, raising money towards the care group and at completion of the ride the money is collected and is given to cancer patients, disabled people and those who are victims of any dreaded disease through the Pro Deo Care Group. Last year the group of cyclists raised R200 000 and this year they are aiming to raise more. The eldest rider in the group is Colin McKay (65) who has been cycling for 25 years. McKay said it takes a lot of training and dedication to take part in the hard and dangerous race, but it is all for a worthy cause. Fred van Zyl of Auto Exec in Port Shepstone is also participating and said the challenges they face when cycling are weather conditions and traffic. He said the ride is a big achievement for him. “The long, tiring and painful ride is for a good cause and those who benefit from it face more pain and sometimes endure it for longer than the five days it takes us to complete the ride.”

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM THIS weekend sees the hosting of the annual Ingeli Country Show at the Harding Country Club, which is always an enjoyable occasion that gives visi-
Dog on the Couch
TOURISM 360 Countryside and celebrities tors the opportunity to have lots of entertainment and things to do with the hospitable farming and timber folk of the area. Many people who have taken the scenic drive out to our picturesque hinterland usually come back with bargain buys of country produce and craft - KZN does not have many country shows anymore so why not head to the hills of Harding to enjoy the weekend. Years ago I was involved in the sport/personality management business and when getting to know our celebrity clients, it became apparent that when they were not in the sporting limelight their best form of relaxation would be to go to places where they would not be hounded for photos, autographs and long-winded discus-
sions with knowing enthusiasts. They just wanted to chill and enjoy their leisure pastimes. It is for this reason that so many famous people visit or have holiday homes on this lovely stretch of coastline. I am told that internationally recognised musicians like Jack Johnson and the group Metallica have been surfing the waves up and down the coast and Roger Taylor of Queen fame visits family here. When film stars are doing shoots or if royalty comes to town, yes, Princes William and Harry have been social near Port Edward, quite simply the unpretentious people of paradise leave them be and if anything just offer a quick “enjoy the stay”. In many instances we don’t know
A foundation in basic training would have nipped this problem in the bud. Your dog would have learnt to respond to basic commands which could be applied to dealing with troubles as they arise, such as his occupation of the couch. As your problem seems to be a longstanding one, you’ll need more time and patience to alter the habit than if your dog had only recently taken possession of the couch or chairs, but some informed basic training and perseverance should result in a solution for all. A variety of comfortable dog beds are available in different designs and sizes. Alternatively, you could adapt an old duvet to this purpose. Encourage your dog to lie on it and to understand that it is his. Teach your dog to understand what a specific command means. In this case, he needs to learn the meaning of the word “bed.” Clicker training can work marvels if you know how to do it. You could use this to train him to get onto his bed on cue. Alternatively, encourage him onto his bed with treats so that he associates the action
with the cue-word “bed”. Once you have this right, place his bed in a suitable place in the room where the couch problem arose, and with luck he might instead take to his bed. If his habit is deeply ingrained and he reverts to the couch, then repeat the exercise in the room near the couch. Part of the reason for getting onto the couch in the first place was that it’s more comfortable than the floor. Also, your dog probably wants to be near you. So bear these points in mind while considering and working on the problem. If after all this your dog still persists in jumping onto the couch, secure a lead to his collar and gently encourage him off, saying “bed” and throwing a treat onto the bed. WhatevHi Susan, er you do, avoid shouting and using I’M having trouble with my dog force or tugging on the lead or on the hogging the couch and chairs in our sitdog if there’s resistance. He should ting room, and getting him off is an have learnt that his new bed is just as even bigger problem. I shout down and comfortable, and feel ‘at home’ in it. If point to the floor, but he won’t respond. you know about T-Touches, these in If I try to physically move him he resists addition to the clicker or treat-training my efforts and won’t co-operate. How could help encourage him to view his can I handle this? Short of keeping him bed as a pleasing alternative to the out of the room, is there a solution? couch. It may be necessary to repeat Concerned one or more of these exercises from time to time to establish or maintain the new status quo. If you can’t get this right, the hands-on help of a reputable trainer should set you on the right course. that they have come and gone. That’s how low key we are when having the famous among us. Artists, authors (think the Ramsgate Literary Fest on 24 September) stage personalities, tycoons and sports stars (Jonty Rhodes loves a good surf here) come and go and come back again thanks to them being able to just be for a short while be without the burden of uninvited attention. I have a suspicion that if the Kardashians for some obscure reason came here they may be a bit disappointed because many would not pay them much attention and we know how much they
magnetise to the media and the media to them. Some of the seriously special have contracts drawn up with the establishments where they stay to ensure their visit remains private with a capital “P”. No need to have such things done down here - South Coasters respect one’s own space anyway. If our neck of the woods can have the well known (and us normal beings) leave here rested and impressed then hats off to our destination. When Barack Obama is jobless from November maybe we should invite him around for some golf. He would love it.
UGU BEAT FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION
Ugu commits to being seen and be heard AMONGST numerous plans pronounced by the new district mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza the main one is to ensure the municipality’s visibility to its communities through the revival of the spirit of effec tive and efficient delivery of its core man dated services of water and sanitation. The municipality will achieve the set milestone through the continued imple mentation of the back to basics strategy that has proven successful over the years resurrecting the municipality from a posi tion of financial and service delivery dis tress to a wellfunctioning organisation. Going forward, the newly elected council has vowed to continue to work closely with the community and employ ees to advance the people’s lives through the provision of quality drinking water and access to decent sanitation. From the previous term of office, Ugu has been committed in the unearthing of water sources enabling access to this ba sic right to previously marginalised com
munities. Furthermore, the organisation will continue with the implementation of multimillion rand projects for water infra structure developments and refurbish ments to eradicate all water and sanita tion deficiencies throughout the district. The improvement of communication also forms part of the mayor’s improve ment list. In an effort to vastly improve commu nication and the turnaround time in at tending service delivery matters, we have commenced with the strengthening of communication channels with external stakeholders to ensure a more active citi zenry where all stakeholders, customers, the leadership and administration per sonnel work collaboratively to improve the district. To date, we have improved the man ner in which we handle customer care in terface through the upgrading of the call centre technology, the increase of tele phone lines, implementation of service delivery standards monitoring tool and the vigorous utilisation of customer bulk SMS and social networks and local online media websites. From this year till the end of term in 2021, this leadership will continue to ad vance the people’s power and ensure im proved service delivery to the district’s res idents and simultaneously ensure the lin gering triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality is con quered. We encourage our communities to partner with us to ensure the desired out come of a better district for all is achieved. Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environ ment that is friendly, responsive, account able, effective and efficient for our com munities. “Ugu district is better today than it was yesterday.”

Election results bring ‘double whammy’ THE calamitous, but unforeseen local government election results have led to high levels of unemployment among ANC councillors. Both the vagaries of the proportional representation process and the drastic loss of almost 50 municipalities where the ANC no longer govern, are responsible for the double ANC whammy. Recent press reports have indicated that some of the cadres are being redeployed as municipal officials in a workforce that is already bloated. This puts a question mark over their suitability for the work as municipal officials who have to, in theory at least, possess minimum competency levels in their new jobs, while all that is required of councillors is that they are South African citizens. The Municipal Finance Management Act as well as the Amended Municipal Systems Act of 2011 require that all officials in the finance department, and some officials in all other departments have to meet minimum standards in skills and qualifications. To some extent this prescription is already more honoured in the breach than in its observance. These new engagements are not likely to improve service delivery in any way while at the same time serving to drain the resources of the municipality in a non-productive way. D. Snashall

Endangering children’s lives is against Constitution ACCORDING to Act 23 of 2007 Section 2(1) (a) of the South African Tobacco Legislation: “No person may smoke in any vehicle or car when a child under the age of 12 years is present in that vehicle.” The South African Constitution states in Section 28.1 f. that “not to be required or permitted to perform
work or provide services that place at risk the child’s well-being, education, physical or mental health or spiritual, moral or social development.” Section 28.2 states “the child’s best interests are of paramount importance in every matter concerning the child.” One morning recently at the Oribi

Watch out for this scam MY vehicle battery needed to be replaced. I had bought the battery within a oneyear period from the merchants, who checked the faulty battery. I was told that the merchants did not sell the make of battery, which they had removed from my Volkswagen Beetle. In addition, the date on the battery was 2010. No bat tery has a lifetime of six years. The only explanation is that, during a service, my new and/or functioning battery had been removed and the old dud replaced. Consequently, I am issuing vehicle owners a warning to inspect their vehicle after a service to ensure, to a certain extent, that they are not “taken for a ride”. It is unaccepta ble that it is the senior citizen who is always targeted. Dr L.J. Peltz

Thank you for care and support I WOULD like to thank the following people and the Netcare Margate Hospital staff for taking care of me after having a big operation. Dr Rautenbach and the anaesthetist operated on me on 5 July and I was five-and-a-half hours under and in ICU. Through good wishes and prayers from my colleagues at South City Church, I recovered and am on the mend. My grandchildren came all the way from Polokwane to see me and my children from Extension 3 [Margate] and dear friends also came. We need good people who care and it shows when one is sick and down. It is the responsibility of the public and the authorities to take on these selfish smokers who just do not care. Sis Man
posed the question, “If alcohol and mari juana were both illegal, which would you legalise?” They all replied marijuana. Why? Because no officer had ever been called to a domestic violence case, motor vehicle accident or murder scene where “dagga” or “weed” was the cause. Mary Jane Umtentweni

We have just seen it again with a cat that lives at the courthouse in Scottburgh. We have called him Zorro as you see him now and then you don’t. CemAir vs SA Airlink

Daar is mos nou ‘n hele paar Lions in die span, hoewel hulle nie naastenby so goed was as in die Superreeks nie?
So mededingend dat CemAir beslis gaan seerkry.

Genoeg swartgalligheid. Dominee Jan Swart van Pretoria het ons gemoed so effe opgekikker met die storie van die dominee wat ‘n man vra “waarom so hartseer broer?” “My hond is dood, sal dominee hom begrawe assbelief?”

vanuit hierdie nuwe perspektief. Verandering is nie maklik nie.

autofever Weather improves for SA: Is your car ready for spring? >> AA advises motorists to check windscreens, wipers and tyres
S
UMMER is fast approaching and motorists across South Africa need to ensure that along with the more pleasant weather, their cars, and their attitudes on the road, also need to be in tip-top shape. The Automobile Association (AA) said that drivers need to make sure their cars are in good condition, especially if they are looking at taking advantage of the warmer weather to make longer journeys. The AA said: “If you are going on holiday, even if it is a long weekend, or if you will be using your car more
now than in winter, it is important to ensure it is ready for the change in weather. Driving in summer months is different to driving in winter, especially inland, and there are a few things people must check before it’s too late.” Important checks Among the important items the AA advises motorists to check are their windscreens, wipers and tyres. It is also important that vehicles be visible at all times, including at night. For this reason, owners should ensure their lights (front and back) and
indicators are also working properly. The AA warns: “Driving inland, many motorists may not have used their wipers for a while. It is important, as we enter a wetter season, that these are checked and in good condition. Standing outside in the sun, or only using them to clear dust off the windscreen, may have damaged the wipers, and motorists may only realise this when there is a downpour, which is dangerously late to discover they don’t work properly.” Apart from this, the AA said any cracks on windscreens need to be re-

paired and that it is vital that tyres are checked to ensure they are in good, roadworthy condition. Too often, motorists ignore the condition of their tyres, which are a critical component to safe driving. Consider that during the summer months small pools of water may accumulate on the road, and worn tyres may lead to aquaplaning; this occurs when the tread on the tyres is no longer able to channel water away, and the tyre lifts off the road surface, and starts to skim across the water like a speedboat. Demands change with the seasons “As the seasons change, so too will the demands on your vehicle. It is im-
portant that motorists have their vehicles checked and serviced, and that they are confident that each and every aspect of the car is working properly,” the Association said. In addition, the AA again urged all drivers to ensure that their attitudes are positive on the road at all times. This includes not speeding, not using any electronic devices while driving, and always wearing seatbelts. “During the summer when there are storms we all need to be aware that these will lead to delays for everyone, and that drivers should remain calm and appreciate that everyone else is in the same situation,” the AA concluded. - Wheels24

Nordschleife to fine-tune its efficient and dynamic ride, it promises to be a smart and rewarding choice – not only for those who seek appealing exterior lines and a comfortable and very safe cabin, but also a car that gives the driver great satisfaction on the road. The new-generation i30 family will also feature the first high performance model under Hyundai Motor’s N brand going into production in 2017. This high-performance model is likely to get power from a high-output two-litre turbocharged petrol engine. “Our designers are driven by passion and enthusiasm bringing pride and joy to Hyundai owners. You see and feel this new spirit in the New Generation i30 – it is a proud statement,” said Peter Schreyer, president and chief design officer at the Hyundai Motor Group. “With the New Generation i30

we are introducing our newly developed front grille: we call it the Cascading Grille. It will become the new identity of Hyundai.” The new i30 weaves and matches technology with connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless charging to enhance smartphone operation and functionality while driving. Some of the latest safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Smart Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Driver Attention Alert and Blind Spot Detection increase passenger comfort more. With design being the most important buying reason for Hyundai customers, the new i30 further evolves Hyundai’s styling language with precise and tensed lines, refined rich surfaces and a sculpted body to create a confident appearance. The development engineers of Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical Centre in Germany enhanced the driving dynamics of the new i30 in a rigorous testing programme throughout Europe and on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife. The new i30 now also features a fully-independent multi-link rear suspension system, which adds to the dynamic driving characteristics of the car. The new i30 is powered by a range of small-displacement turbocharged petrol and diesel engines delivering a dynamic and efficient driving experience. There are three petrol engines and one diesel engine. The new-generation i30, designed at Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, is more than just one model. It will become a family of unique products united by a timeless and balanced design coherent for every body type. The family offers the right car for everyone – for the ones looking for elegance, or the ones looking for exhilaration. - Supplied.

OUGH St Michael’s sea conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of the over 60 young surfers who competed in the 2016 South Coast Gromcomp, which ran for two days last weekend. Boys and girls from around the country took part in the U10, U12, U14 and U16 competitions, and South Coast girl Maya Attfield came fourth in the U14 girls’ final. The event formed part of the 2016 Surfing South Africa domestic surfing series and the surfers were competing for valuable Surfing South Africa ratings points and a share of the R8 000 in prize money. - Supplied.
