A number of reasons to celebrate

south coast This week ONLINE www.hillcrestfever.co.za

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

S the new Justice Park takes shape over the Port Shepstone skyline, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality says plans are in place to rehabilitate the surrounding roads to ensure an easy flow of traffic around the site. This comes after a number of readers raised concerns with the Fever after witnessing Memorial and Andreasen roads deteriorate as a result of trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles going in and out of the construction site. Justice Park is to be a High Court featuring 16 courts and maximum security holding cells, among other things. It will also have parking for more than 200 cars on its 2 355ha premises. “The road is not coping already as is evident every morning. They need to widen it and install traffic lights to regulate the flow of cars, or else traffic will come to a standstill once the court eventually opens,” said the businessman. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April said a plan is in place for the roads. “The municipality has a clear plan for Andreasen and Memorial roads. They will be resealed and road markings will be reconfigured to allow free flowing traffic from Justice Park leading to town. All this is intended to be done once the construction of Justice Park nears completion so that trucks do not damage the reseal,” he said.

Family says brother’s death not suicide

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Dane Nair’s body was found in his bakkie at the Port Shepstone police station entrance.

PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com THE family of the late Dane Nair are not satisfied with the way the Port Shepstone SAPS is handling Nair’s case. They believe that from the word go the case was registered incorrectly as suicide. Nair’s body was found in his bakkie on 27 June at the Port Shepstone Police Station charge of-

fice entrance. Nair’s sister Rani Landsberg said the reason they feel the police are not doing their job is because there has been no arrest. “My brother had received death threats three weeks prior to his murder. At one stage, just after his Nissan bakkie had been to the panel-beaters, someone tried to drive him off the road and we believe it is the same person who killed him.” She said her brother had gone to the police on 26 June late at night asking them to help him regarding those who were after him. “In the early hours he returned home and was very restless, pacing up and down. That afternoon he left home after receiving a text message that said, ‘never to be seen alive again’.” Landsberg said Nair went to the police station again seeking protection, only for it to be his place of death. Landsberg said that from her brother’s injuries it was evident he had put up a fight. However, the family find it difficult to understand that upon finding his lifeless body across his bakkie seats, the police suggested that his death was suicide, even though he had been in the charge office minutes before. “My brother’s postmortem report indicated his death was unnatural. “The investigating officer has not been helpful. The first time we got a visit from the him to take our statements was six weeks after Dane’s murder. “We are always phoning for updates on his case. We understand that their caseload is heavy and they lack the manpower, but we will not accept tardiness or the lack of the ability to perform one’s duty,” said Landsberg She says the SAPS should be giving this case extra attention because the crime took place on their doorstep, and has further tainted their image in the eyes of the public. “The police need to stop treating his murder as suicide, find those individuals responsible and bring them to book and get rid of all those dirty policeman.” The Port Shepstone SAPS was asked for comment and police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum said the case is still under investigation and the Dane’s family are being kept updated regarding the investigation.

Rapist to spend 15 years in jail A 27-YEAR-OLD man appeared in Scottburgh Regional Court recently for rape and robbery. Senzo Ngcongo was convicted last week and sentenced to 15 years’ for rape and 10 years for robbery. The robbery sentence is to run concurrently with that of the rape. On 21 April, 2013, at 3pm, a 17-

year-old girl was walking along the road through a sugar-cane plantation in Mgangeni near Kenterton when Ngcongo, who was following her, began chatting to her. He then pushed her into the plantation and raped her before robbing her of her cellphone and money. The victim made her way to the

road where a passing motorist, who happened to be a police constable, assisted her. Ngcongo was subsequently arrested and charged. The case was investigated by Detective Constable Mfanelo Mchunu of the Sawoti SAPS Detective Service. - Supplied.

She quoted Hebrews 11 verse 1. “Your circumstances may br very bad today but believe that tomorrow the sun will shine again, for we walk by faith and not by sight.” Guest pastor, Pastor Ngeneme Mhlongo shared words of wisdom with church members and said there is a difference between a church member who has fallen and is lost and a member who is feeble. “A fallen Christian can be prayed for while a feeble Christian is not easy recognisable as he or she is always in church, but lacks faith,” said Mhlongo.

South Coast man excels in film industry >> Film and TV production company founded in 2014 PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com

RTWAY Productions is a film and television production company, founded in 2014 by Phumlani Khusi, who is originally from Gcilima. He currently lives in Durban. The 25-year-old entrepreneur studied video technology at the Durban University of Technology after he completed matric at Phathwa High. Khusi says he developed his passion for media, specifically television, after landing roles in primary school plays. “I initially wanted to pursue acting as a career until my sister advised me to rather choose something behind the scenes. I did my research and came across video technology.” After a year of Artway’s existence, Khusi got an opportunity to film the a music video with the South Coast award-winning musician, Happy Mdunjane. “After Mdunjane saw my short film on the internet, he contacted me. The music video was a success and it later caught the attention of a local businessman, Thulani Bhengu, who then decided to invest in the company.” Khusi said Bhengu’s investment gave Artway the push it needed to compete in the professional market. “Today the company has offices at the SmartXchange Business Centre in Durban and has shot numerous music videos, including the South Coast’s Sisanda, who sings Indlela yami and that of Nate, a hip-hop artist also from the South Coast.

Artways is now producing a feature film, in partnership with Star Set TV, and will be released between April and May 2017. Artway Production recently hosted auditions for an educational drama production at Uvongo Community Hall. The drama is a partnership with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and will be filmed in the next few weeks. Khusi said he will continue with talent searches on the South Coast and will be developing the talent further if he has the power.

F you were wondering what the roar of engines was about in St Mike’s on Sunday, it was the Hospice Ride for Remembrance. Every year bikers on the South Coast get together to hold the fundraiser and proceeds go to the South Coast Hospice. Bikers pinned white doves onto a remembrance banner in memory of loved ones they lost. Kenny Brown started the day’s proceedings with a prayer, followed by a moment of silence. Inflatable white doves were then released in memory of biker brothers and sisters. The last set of doves released were for care-givers and Hospice staff. “The event was well supported by bikers and ended with a breakfast at Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds,” said fund-raising co-ordinator, BT King. A total of R4 550.60 was raised. Hospice thanks everyone who made the event a success.

CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com A MARGATE Primary School has a budding poet and two quiz masters in their midst. This was evident after Enkoneni Primary School held a poetry competition and a quiz recently. It was opened to all pupils and Asiphe Mtshali came first in the poetry category. Anete Mzelemu and Olwethu Mtshali partnered and answered all questions correctly in the quiz.

SAYIDI Tvet College and the Media Information Communications and Technology (Micta) Seta launched their radio production and film, television and video production learnership programme at Margate Hotel on Thursday evening. ANC secretary Mzwandile Mkwanazi spoke on behalf of the new Ugu District Municipality mayor Tolomane Mnyayiza, who was unable to attend the function. Mkwanazi said the talent of many

Film and video production learnership students Sikelela Gcwabe (left) with Phelelani Ntaka at the event. will be showcased during the programme and they congratulate the college on this developmental programme. College rector Dr Sipho Nzimande said 50 pupils have enrolled for this programme, all from rural areas. He said what stands out for him is that these pupils have the ability and strong minds and he is confident they will “make it”. Nzimande is looking forward to making use of the partnership the col-

lege has with 1 KZN television station, which has committed to assist with the programme. “We are really looking forward to the partnership we have with 1KZN and encourage organisations and churches to make use of this platform the college and the station has created in our district,” said Nzimande. Nzimande said he is grateful for the opportunity for the youth and thanks Mict Seta. The guest list included actor Sello Maake Ka Ncube, who has performed in theatre, film and television in his native land, as well as in the U.S., Britain,

Canada, and Europe. He was also a guest speaker and told pupils that nothing beats belief. He also recited a poem he wrote to Nakedi Ribane, actress and former model whom he believes is an example of what can be achieved when one perseveres. “The poem I wrote to Nakedi is titled Siyazazi and speaks about how birds of the same feather flock together. It speaks of the sound of the rhythm of our culture,” he said. Guests were entertained by a college student, Palesa Dunywa, who did a stage solo and by Thanda Mavundla a songstress from the college. Mbongeni Mathe from the Office of the Premier, congratulated the college for embarking on the programme and said this is exactly the vision of former Premier Senzo Mchunu, who always dreamt of advancing talent in KZN.

Coast movie director seeks assistance

ADVERTORIAL

Cleaning product supplier expands

PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com FILM writer and director Msizi Dlala is asking for assistance for his upcoming film, which he wrote and will be directing. “This is not my first film, this is part two of the film Impilo, I’m Not a Human Being. “Part one was shot last year and all the equipment used was hired, however, I have also tried purchasing cameras and other equipment - all I need is special lights and boom microphones.” The film is about a young man called Allen, who loves his girlfriend Beauty so much he would kill for her. “Allen ends up doing nasty things, which include witchcraft to get money to make his pregnant girlfriend happy. He finds out however, that she’s pregnant with another man’s child. Allen then threatens to kill innocent people as he searches for the guy who impregnated her,” he said. The film will be shot on the South Coast and the cast will be South Africans. “The film needs special lights because some of the scenes have lightning and blasts, which is why we need the special equipment,” he said. Anyone who is able to assist, can contact Dlala on 073 025 9858.

Hibiscus Kennel Clubnews >> Field and the clubhouse were flooded, training back to normal

H

IBISCUS Kennel Club committee and trainers are thankful that the Port Shepstone Borough field has been rehabilitated after the field and the clubhouse were flooded, and that training is back to normal. Members are reminded that training now commences at 2pm. Thank you to everyone who arrived with brooms, rags and high-pressure hoses to clean the clubhouse, and to our local recycling company for uplifting hundreds of bottles washed down by the river. We were in the process of repainting the clubhouse so we are all spick and span once more apart from the persons who removed the aluminum gutters and in the process damaged the roof - this at 1pm on a Monday afternoon. We thank our vigilant neighbour, who was proactive in alerting the SAPS and so preventing further damage to the property. We had a busy weekend of 13 and 14 August as we held a fund-raiser for Ninette Smith on Saturday, which was great fun with Agility Tunnel Mania and 36 weaving poles as well as a Rally

O course followed by an Open Show on the Sunday. Well done to our judges Nicki Calvert and Heather Moorcroft for the excellent courses. We thank everyone who attended and made the weekend such a successful one. Monday was “wash-up” day for humans and dogs as the ground is still wet and muddy in patches, which will take some time to dry.

Show results: Billy Engelbrecht and Gunner: 1st and two 2nd places. Ninette Smith and Swish: three 1sts and Sparkle 1st 2nd 3rd. Sharon Derman and Charlie: 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Gaby Frey and Scooby: two 2nds and KT two 2nds and Cassie a 2nd. Beryl Verwoerdt and Spice: 3rd and Poet a 2nd.

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

Dog on the Couch

TOURISM 360 Cost and service I HAVE just finished a very enjoyable and humorous read called Ruinair by an Irish author by the name of Paul Kilduff who has a full dig at the pitfalls one could experience by using lowcost airlines. Understanding how an airline could charge just one cent to travel short haul to some often wayward and isolated airports in Europe is intriguing to say the least. The airlines make all sorts of other revenues through creative charges over and above the base price. Some have even contemplated charges for on board use of the loo. Needless to say the airline in the book has been challenged in terms of their levels of service and staff motivation to meet the expectation of the fly-

ing customer. I being of Scottish descent like the idea of cheap anything however when it comes to tourism, no matter how inexpensive a service may be there is one overriding factor that will bring the customer back time and time again and that is whether the client felt satisfied with the deal. Kilduff sums it up well when he says “customer service is about warmth, amenability, compassion, flexibility, and fairness but most of all it’s about the people who deliver it”. I fully concur with his view and down here we have hospitality offerings that range from bespoke high end to economy and throughout this spectrum each customer wants people to have the endearing attitude that can meet their expectation. I know from experience that a host with a good approach is more likely to

appease a concerned customer than one who is indifferent and couldn’t care-less. The latter usually gets exposed on the internet or on social media- bad for business. Backpacker establishments for example usually do not charge high prices and I am aware of one proprietor in the Drakensberg who regularly and without charge will drive guests over 40km to meet up with a lift or bus in Underberg. Such gestures go a huge distance in getting product and host community well respected and supported. Our local airline CemAir is not a low-cost carrier and their service is up

there with the best because all personnel go that little bit further for the paying customer. I will send their CEO Miles ven der Molen a copy of the book, I am sure he will chuckle at the read and know that it is unlikely that a similar book will be ever written about his OR Tambo to Margate service. In the mean time I am stalking the internet for bargain prices for our 2017 holiday to the UK and France. With the exchange rate pretty heavy, I think I will need to if I am to afford even a pie and a beer over there. It’s in my Gaelic blood you know.

Hi Susan, how can I tell which of my dogs is the pack leader? My little Yorkshire Terrier seems to me to act more like the alpha than my Boxers do. She always rushes ahead when we get ready to go out. Should I be a stronger pack leader? Terry Hi Terry, Packtheorists would advise you to demonstrate your “alpha position” by al ways making a point of being the first to eat, never allowing the dog through a doorway ahead of you, disallowing the dog on beds or furniture, and generally asserting your self in a dominant role. They believe that do mestic dogs spend much of their time plot ting the overthrow of both canine and hu man hierarchies. This misunderstood theory, known to have been based on false premises, is unfor tunately still being perpetuated in the pop ular press. It was first popularised by the

Monks of New Skett in the seventies. Then in 1975 Erik Zimen collected wolves of vari ous origins, studied them in captivity and found that there was a strong need among them to compete and fight for this highly prized alpha position. In the sixties it was thought that domes tic dogs and wolves were the same species and would behave identically. David Mech studied wolves in captivity and published his opinion that wolves were pack animals who fight for leadership. As wolves and dogs were considered to be the same spe cies, it was thought that these findings would apply equally well to the latter. (See The Wolf Ecology and Behaviour of an En dangered Species.) After further work ex posed flaws in studying wild animals in cap tivity, and in further studies studying wolves in the wild Mech revoked his earlier findings in 1999 in his book Alpha, Status, Domi nance and Division of Labour in Wolf Packs.

In 2008 Mech found that conflicts with in family groups of wolves were rare and that all the members would achieve alpha status when they produced their own off spring and left their parents to form their own family groups. When not in captivity wolves live cohesively and cooperatively. A parent and older sibling guide and care for the younger offspring. As we are concerned with the dog, we should turn to more appropriate authorita tive studies, of which there are many. Dr Frank Beache spent 30 years studying dogs and found that the small minority of alpha dogs, who gained position by bullying and force, soon where thrown out of the group their behaviour was unacceptable. The majority of alpha dogs were benev olent and confident leaders who had no need of bullying tactics. If they did squabble for dominance, their rank would actually be reduced to one in which the insecure reside.

Many alpharanking dogs are too small or frail to dominate one another, but they are awarded a right to control a certain re source. Each individual determines which resource is of value and earns his right. A more alpha dog may simply concede to an other dog the right to something of lesser importance and award himself a privilege he regards as of greater value. A human sim ile could be a brother and sister relationship in which one child monopolises the comput er and the other the telephone. The parent supplies the resources and so has the ultimate say, whereby the less pushy of the two will be given the advan tage if tensions otherwise rise too high. Your little Yorkie has been awarded privileges by your benevolent Boxers who seem to be sorting out a peaceful compromise.

FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION

RESIDENTS of Ugu District will be relieved to know that our municipal call centre, which has been a concern for consumers and many residents, has been receiving attention. The 24-hour customer call centre was upgraded, and now provides additional options for consumers to interact with the call centre agents. This has improved the manner in which we handle customer care interface. The work done so far includes creating more work space for the

agents, upgrading of the call centre technology, adding more telephone lines and the implementation of the service delivery standards monitoring tool. The improved technology also incorporates logging inquiries through voicemail and/or SMS, automatic customer reference numbers, interdepartmental escalation and tracking of service faults, social media updates on service interruptions and bulk SMS services. She was born in 1907 in Llanelli, South Wales, UK, and first came to South Africa with her parents William Henry and Annie Roberts, returning to Wales with her mother and brother Edward Aneurin in 1923. She married Victor L. Hardy in England in

1939. He was born in Cape Town in 1910. They returned to South Africa and I believe they had a son, William Lawrence. Her brother-in-law was Lieutenant-Colonel Laurence Arthur Hardy, who died in Pietermaritzburg in 2002. This information is for family history purposes. with the common resident frustrations where their calls went unanswered, or they were kept on the line for a long time, or there were delays in the dispatching of trouble-shooting teams as well as agents who did not have the correct information to assist residents. New and existing call centre agents, who form an integral part of the call centre’s success, have undergone vigorous training to enable them to provide improved service. Training also taught them how to deal with residents, who are sometimes at their most vulnerable state when they call and need to be treated with dignity and professionalism. So with the technology upgrade and adequate training provided, we urge residents to use all the call centre options to ensure their matters are dealt with within the set municipal turnaround time. We have also created an interactive Ugu Municipality Talk Facebook page that provides constant updates on water and sanitation-related services.

This page also enables residents to log their water and sanitation inquiries where dedicated municipal personnel will provide prompt responses. With the ever growing and never ending evolution of social media, residents are urged to join the Ugu Municipality Talk Facebook page as it is the only credible Facebook page where municipal-related queries will be addressed. The municipality will also be embarking on a vigorous district-wide customer database drive to create and update customer contact details as it has come to the municipality’s attention that not all occupants of residences receive the municipal service interruption notifications. Residents’ co-operation in making this exercise a success will be highly appreciated. “Ugu District is better today than it was yesterday.”

Mr President, what are you doing? THE public cannot comprehend the actions of wanting to charge the finance minister with corruption. Surely the president is conversant with the repercussions on our economy. How it is possible that a president is bent on destroying a country’s economic system, which will terminate the country being demoted to junk status? Even the Guptas are “pulling out” of the country to avoid being bankrupted. Prior to Zuma’s presidency the country could boast of an elite, sophisticated and highly trained, experienced criminal investigations organisation, the Scorpions. When Zuma was being investigated for corruption, he disbanded the organisation, which was under the leader-

“Hierdie beskermings-aksie is ‘n

Wys dit in ons betrokkenheid by buurtwagte?

Verander my asseblief weer terug na ‘n man. Amen”.

EARTY and mouth-watering aromas filled the air on Saturday morning when the Wild Coast Sun hosted the final leg of the curry-cooking contest. Vying for the top spot were chefs from all over the country. Judges included South Africa’s first MasterChef, Deena Naidoo, and comedian Karou Charou did not disappoint as emcee, who had the capacity crowd in stitches. Contestants had an hour to whip up an outstanding vegetarian curry dish and impress judges, who agreed it was a close call, but Brian Venkatesan walked away the winner.

Ford Ranger’s biggest lineup >> Ranger has been a huge success story for Ford

I

T’S a case of bigger and better for the segment-defining Ford Ranger, which now boasts the most comprehensive line-up in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector with the addition of nine trend-setting new 2.2 Automatic models. This takes the expanded range to an unprecedented 36 derivatives. “The Ford Ranger has been a huge success story for Ford Motor Company, and has redefined the LCV segment in terms of performance, capability, technology and safety,” says Tracey Delate, general marketing manager, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. “The introduction of the advanced six-speed automatic transmission on the 2.2 Duratorq TDCi models will undoubtedly build on this legacy, broadening its appeal to an even wider audience. Unrivalled driving convenience, comfort and ease-of-use have become key selling points for the popular Ranger 3.2 TDCi Auto, and these characteristics are now extended to the refined and economical 2.2 TDCi models. This is sure to make the Ford Ranger more popular than ever amongst private and commercial customers alike. In a first for the LCV segment, the Ranger 2.2 TDCi is the only single cab pick-up on offer locally paired with an automatic gearbox. This is expected to be a popular choice for customers seeking a dependable and economical workhorse combined with the convenience of the automatic transmission. The Ranger 2.2 TDCi Auto models are available across all three body styles, including Single Cab, Super Cab and Double Cab. Customers can also select between three different specification levels: XL, mid-range XLS and high-spec XLT. Efficient and economical Ford’s latest-generation 2.2-litre four-cylinder Duratorq TDCi engine delivers the ideal balance of fuel efficiency and performance. It is equipped with a variable nozzle turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation and high-pressure common rail diesel injection to deliver 118kW of power. With a peak torque output of 385Nm on tap, the Ranger 2.2 TDCi delivers outstanding driveability in all conditions – whether overtaking, carrying a load, towing or conquering challenging off-road terrain. It also features several noise and vibrationreduction features employed in the design, making the 2.2 TDCi one of the smoothest-running engines in its class. Proven capability in all conditions The expanded Ford Ranger line-up guarantees sure-footed performance, regardless of the driving conditions. Of the new 2.2 TDCi Auto models, five are two-wheel drive and four are equipped with

Ford’s intelligent four-wheel drive system with Torque on Demand that allows drivers to tackle even the most extreme conditions with confidence. The 4x4 drivetrain employs an electronically controlled transfer case with shift-on-the-fly functionality controlled via a dial on the centre console. This allows 4x2 and 4x4 high-range modes to be engaged while on the move. Selecting 4L engages low-range gearing, giving the new Ranger exceptional torque and control for demanding off-road terrain. A rear differential lock is also provided, ensuring additional traction. The Electronic Stability Program, which is standard on all but the entry-level Base models, delivers a high level of active driving safety. The system incorporates Traction Control, Hill Launch Assist, Trailer Sway Control, Adaptive Load Control, Roll-over Mitigation, as well as Hill Descent Control on the 4x4 models. In addition, the Ranger boasts a class-leading 800mm water wading depth and 230mm of ground clearance, assuring exceptional performance in even the most challenging terrain. The hefty towing capacity of up to 3 500kg is ideally suited to heavy-duty hauling. Expanded model range The new Ford Ranger is available in a wide range of models and specification levels, with the line-up comprising a total of 66 derivatives, including nine all-new 2.2 TDCi Automatic models. The Ranger 2.2 Auto Single Cab models are unique in the LCV segment, as they are the only automatic derivatives available in a sector dominated by corporate and fleet sales. Two models are available, comprising the 2.2 TDCi XL 4x2 and the higher specification XLS 4x4. Three versatile Super Cab variants of the 2.2 Auto are included in the expanded model offering, comprising the 4x2 XL, along with the XLS models in either 4x2 or 4x4 guises. The Super Cab is particularly popular with farmers, contractors as well as lifestyle-oriented buyers seeking the added convenience of the extra space behind the front seats, as well as the convenience of the rear-opening doors that provide unrivalled access to the entire cabin. Ford’s Double Cab Ranger has dominated its class since 2014, offering unparalleled comfort, space, convenience and trend-setting features. It’s set to become even more popular with the addition of four new 2.2 Auto models. Outstanding value for money is the hallmark of the Ranger 2.2 TDCi XL Double Cab Auto, which is available in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants. The XLS 4x4 takes the features list up several notches, with the luxuriously appointed XLT Double Cab 4x2 rounding off the new Ranger 2.2 TDCi Auto line-up. - Supplied.

IT certainly is a challenge for the business sector to remain positive and proactive when one considers the very real possibility of a “low road” scenario playing out in South Africa. A further downgrade is widely regarded as arguably the biggest external threat to

Samantha made finals in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle in which she placed seventh in the country. She also placed third in the 100m freestyle, which puts her in third position in the country over all age groups. As a result of this, Samantha is going to complete internationally, starting with the Middle East leg of the World Cup Series in Dubai and Doha in October.
