A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Offduty cop arrests alleged housebreakers OFF-DUTY policeman, Warrant Officer Sydney Seaton from Port Shepstone SAPS, did not hesitate to answer the call of duty when requested to do so by community members on Wednesday. Seaton was enjoying family time when he received a call at 11am about suspects, who were seen jumping over a wall of premises in Jackson Street in Shelley Beach. Without thinking twice he rushed to the address in his vehicle and was just in time to see the suspects, of whom a description had been given, about to get into a blue VW Golf, the probable get-away vehicle. Seaton then arrested all three and found two knives and cellphones in the vehicle. At the same time two cases of attempted burglary were reported to police in Jackson Street. In one case a 30-year-old woman was at home at 11am when she heard a noise. “When she investigated, she found two men [suspects] shaking the sliding door. When she called her husband, they ran away,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. In the other case a 44-year-old woman received a report of two men who were seen on the roof of her home. “When they responded, the two suspects jumped off the roof and ran away,” said Wiid. The three men, aged 19, 20 and 40, are in custody and are due to appear in court soon. - Supplied.

Illegally connected cables in open view on the road in Mkholombe, endangering people and animals.

Power theft rife in Mkholombe >> ‘There are cables running everywhere throughout Mkholombe’ CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com FOR years a resident living near Mkholombe says she and others have been experiencing frequent power cuts due to cable theft. The woman, who lives in a RDP house in Mkholombe, says she and 50 others are affected. “We have not had electricity for over a week because people from the shacks connect to our electrical lines to steal power. “I have lost count the number of times this has happened. We have to suffer and live in fear. We can’t cook, bath, watch television or store our food in the fridge or freezer.” The woman has been living in a RDP house for 10 years and has heard numerous promises from Eskom, ward councillors and the mu-

nicipality about plans they had to stop cable theft. “Nothing has been done. No action has been taken. Reporting the crime is not enough. There has to be something else Eskom can do to stop electricity theft as they are aware of this situation.” Eskom media desk says technicians were working on the problem on Tuesday afternoon. “Our colleagues are busy with a normalisation project at Mkholombe, where illegal customers will be supplied with formal and legal electricity. There is currently a contractor on site installing the infrastructure. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is also on board. The project to electrify the area seems to be the only solution to solve the area’s electricity theft problem.” Ajith Rajaram, Ward 17 councillor, said he has contacted Eskom

several times with regard to finding a solution to stop power theft. “I asked an Eskom official to meet me on site about two months ago and I am still waiting for the official to confirm a appointment,” said Rajaram. He says cable theft had always been a serious issue in the Mkholombe area. “There are cables running everywhere throughout Mkholombe. It is very dangerous,” he says. He said it is disappointing that others must suffer due the illegal activities. “Some are left without electricity due to the tampering and paying customers have to bear the brunt as Eskom will have to recover the money from somewhere to reinstate the power supply, and replace those cables,” he says.

A 71-YEAR-OLD woman was murdered on Munster Beach on Friday afternoon. The body of Dierdré Gerrtys was discovered by a man walking his dog on the beach. SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed the incident, but said no arrests have been made yet. “The witness said he saw a body lying near the beach steps and went closer. He then saw the woman was covered in blood and she had a stab wound to the neck,” said Mfeka. He said there were also lacerations on the woman’s hands. When Port Edward police arrived at the scene, they searched the area, but did not find anything that related to the murder. Mfeka said investigations are ongoing. - Supplied.

Man drowns in Mpenjati river mouth A 23-YEAR-OLD man drowned at the Mpenjati river mouth, near Glenmore on Monday afternoon. Paramedics from the KZN Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the drowning. “When the paramedics arrived on scene they found the victim had already been recovered from the water by bystanders,” said KZN EMS spokesperson Rob McKenzie. Upon examining the man, they found he had already died. “He was declared dead at the scene. The circumstances leading up to the man drowning are being investigated by the police,” said McKenzie. - Supplied.

Pump malfunction causes dirty water >> Municipality performs continuous waterquality monitoring

Take note of these swimming safety tips

AS the warmer weather approaches and children are completing the final exams for the academic year, many visit beaches, lagoons, dams and even rivers to participate in the “pens down” celebrations. It is also during this time that past experience has shown that the most drownings take place. “It is alarming to us that in most of these incidents of drowning, the children were under no supervision by an adult or responsible person,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. Parents and children must take heed of the following: •Don’t enter the water

if you cannot swim. •When visiting the beach, be aware of rip currents which can easily wash a person out to sea, and also unstable sand at rivers, river mouth and beaches. The water may appear to be shallow and safe to walk, but sand can suddenly give way and you can find yourself in deep water. •Children should never be allowed to go swimming alone. •Never swim after consuming alcoholic drinks. Always swim in demarcated areas where there is a lifesaver on duty. “We can prevent most of these tragedies if everyone takes the prevention of drowning seriously,” she added. - Supplied.

UNDREDS of residents in the Umtentweni, Port Shepstone, Uvongo and Ramsgate areas complained of muddy, brown water coming out of their taps last week. In some areas the water was discoloured and in others, it was dirty. Spokesperson for Ugu District

Municipality, France Zama said the discoloured water was due the malfunction of the dosing pump due to the recent electricity outage. “The electricity outage also caused the filtration process to be inefficient for a short while. The electricity was restored and the pump was reset. “The municipality is currently performing continuous water-quality monitoring as part of the normal

process control. “As a water services authority, we strive to continuously supply customers with quality drinking water that is within the South African National Drinking Standards SANS241 and is safe for human consumption,” he added. Zama said the municipality apologises to customers who may have been affected by this temporary inconvenience.

N IFP councillor claims that the Ugu District Municipality has not followed the proper recruitment procedure when it came to filling two vacant posts. Councillor Simphiwe Mthethwa said the political party did not support the decision to place former Ezinqolweni municipal manager, Mandla Mabhece, in the position of CEO for Ugu Development Agency without the post being advertised. This comes after the amalgamation of the Ezinqolweni and Hibiscus Coast municipalities. He said the same applies to a vacancy for a board member position for the agency, which he claims the municipality does not want to advertise. “We have noted the corrupt and unethical decision the Ugu District Municipality intends to take by placing its own personnel in the vacant positions within the Ugu Development Agency,” said Mthethwa. “The IFP didn’t support this decision at exco and stated that the post must be advertised and recruitment procedures must be followed,” he added. He said the matter was taken to council, which agreed with the IFP that the CEO for the agency post needs to be advertised for the public benefit. “A member of the agency board passed away and here again the exco and council resolved to replace the member without advertising the post. We believe that all vacant posts need to be advertised and all procedures must be followed,”

he said. France Zama, spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality said appointments of board members and directors to the municipal entities remains the prerogative of the entity’s parent municipal council as duly empowered by the provisions of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000. “The municipal council, after extensive consideration, resolved that considerations be made to the applications that were received for this position to determine if there was a suitable qualifying candidate for the position and should there be no suitable qualifying candidate among the received applications, the municipality would then advertise the vacancy accordingly,” said Zama. “In taking this resolution the council was mindful of its legislative mandate and has duly discharged it accordingly in this matter,” he added. Zama said there was nothing sinister in the council decision taken to appoint the former municipal manager of the dissolved Ezinqoleni municipality to the agency’s vacant CEO position. He said it was carefully and decisively thought through considering that after the new municipal boundaries Hibiscus and Ezinqoleni municipality were dissolved where a new Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was established. “As a responsible employer, the council deemed it appropriate to honour all employment contracts by ensuring that all available human resources were utilised accordingly. “Therefore, suggestions that seek to vandalise the decisions of council in this regard are indeed mischievous and farfetched,” said Zama.

TOURISM 360

Past their sellby date AMIL UMRAW

I Do yourself a flavour LAST week we hosted a local media tour group to see some of our agri-tourism products, and what worthwhile tours they were. Some visitors, due to the weather and the desire to see something new, look for those unique outings that will interest them and their families. We were expertly hosted on the local coffee plantation near Port Edward and the banana farm at Southbroom and both tours were extremely informative, interesting and at tour conclusion, sampling of the tasty products was on offer. Sometimes we take for granted what we consume after purchase from one or other retail outlet, but it is really educational to hear and see what farming, production and distribution processes occur before we can have that savoured sip or munch.

We only sampled two types of agriculture - if we factor in sugar cane, macadamia nut and timber production - it becomes apparent that our destination can provide visitors with brilliant examples of pleasant things to do on our farms. The Western Cape has grown its viticulture into a multibillion-rand tourism-related industry through its numerous wine routes so there is no reason why farm tours here cannot take root as well. So when the wind is a bit iffy and the seas a bit choppy, or at any time for that matter, why not trek out and book a farm tour. Our tourism office personnel will gladly assist in making a booking on your behalf. They will also facilitate tours to any of the three reptile “farms” we have down here.

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM So after writing this article I am off to make a good brew of local coffee - bought, of course, after our tour. There are so many fun flavours to enjoy here in our paradise.

N the world of government, policy and legislation, the heavyweights always start off with the best intentions before what seems like a gravitational pull of power takes its toll. Politicians are drawn to power like the Earth is drawn to the sun, some orbiting in a continuous circle of corruption to maintain their positions. History shows this at its full extent. Many who fought the oppression of dictatorship soon became the very thing they sought to overthrow. With the death of Fidel Castro, the possible retirement of Robert Mugabe and our own president under pressure from his peers to step down, the glaring question is how they all got to the point in their careers where they are both hated and loved by the people they swore to serve. Castro was hailed as the saviour of Cuba when he overthrew dictator Fulgencio Batista and led his country into a state of socialism under a communist party. Early in his career, he provided steady growth in the areas of health and education, and was lauded as the hero of socialism and anti-imperialism. With the same token, he also ensured that the Cuban press was controlled by the state and that his opposition was entirely suppressed under his control. Sound familiar? By the end of his rule, Cuba had faced its worst economic decline which crippled its manufacturing industry. Castro improved the lives of his poorer citizens, but at the same time, ruined the economy that allowed for this improvement. Economic decline - that also sounds rather familiar in a very recent South African context. Now onto the Chuck Norris of Zimbabwe - the man who refuses to fade away and who, for almost 30 years, has destroyed his opposition with a knockout roundhouse kick to the face.

f

Mugabe saw the abolishment of white supremacy in Zimbabwe during his rise to power, but as time passed, landed his country in financial ruin and racial divide. He was proclaimed a leader for being a key figure in overthrowing a racist dictatorship and formed a singular political party that had total power right up to 2008. Now the country is trying to salvage what it can after, in my opinion, was one of the biggest economic downfalls in history. Our own South African leaders were voted into power for the promises they made more than 20 years ago. They swore to heal the pains of the past and unite the country under a banner of peace and prosperity. At this stage, that feels like a long-forgotten dream with racism running rampant, the price of basic amenities remaining at an all-time high and crime and poverty rates soaring. Now we are wrestling our president for the truth. Jacob Zuma remains in power despite not answering for his alleged involvement with the Guptas and the shuffling of his cabinet at a whim. He remains in power despite allegedly spending tax money to refurbish his Nkandla home, and he remains in power even though he has just fewer than 800 charges against him. My point - not every leader put into power by the people deserves to be there. The ANC was put into power and continues to serve the interests of its leader before the interests of its people. Zanu-PF put the needs of Mugabe before the needs of its people and has now looked to outside parties to save what’s left of the country. If we as a country are to survive, we have to remove the leaders who behave like dictators under the guise of democracy and exercise our freedom of choice for change while we still can. • Amil Umraw is a reporter at The Witness.

Strange move by KZN Department of Health one supplier rather than through the free-market system. This will hit SMMEs hard. With the current supply chain raising red flags of possible corruption cited by the Auditor-General, items are also likely to be purchased at inflated prices. The department’s own track record confirms this forecast. With all the department’s current headaches, it seems it will simply be creating more with its centralisation programme. While the plan was presented last week to KZN’s Finance and Scopa committees, the Health Portfolio Com-

Transport not easy for some IN your last issue, 24 November, it was men tioned that illegal stopping has started again on the R102 at the entrance of Port Shepstone CBD. Well a note to readers many people have been hiking on that stretch and I have never seen or heard of car accidents due to hiking on that stretch.

Speed camera problematic

People shop at surrounding shops, in cluding Pick n Pay, and thereafter wait for transport to get back home. I am one of many people who wait at that point for transport to Banana Beach. If the municipality took away a few me tres of railway and two to three metres in, there would be a parking bay for motorists

head in amazement. If Statistics South Africa’s numbers are to be believed, only an extremely tiny fraction of South Africans save. The majority, including those up at 3am, have zero savings and there is no way they are catching an easy bargain when they have to pay interest on that credit card. Some even take loans to go shop on Black Friday, which really defies logic. Shop only when you need to and don’t fall for the social media hype. M. Wallace Shelly Beach

Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Courage

THE current public protector recommends that schools instruct pupils in civics. Perhaps South Africans do not understand that when one votes, that vote is in support of a political party and not a person. Consequently, the winning party becomes the ruling party. The ministers then elect the president. South Africans should bear in mind that, unfortunately, the ministers cast their votes for one of their cronies, who may be corrupt and is willing to offer kick backs for support. The chronic situation of bad governance and the declining, deplorable weakening economy cannot change, unless South Africans support another party. In accordance with the philosophy of democracy, the winning party rules for five years, and the opposition may rule for the following five years. Perhaps someone can elucidate how the leader of the workers’ party thrives in abundant wealth, living an

S

Sy was onmiddellik kwaad. “Santa,” antwoord Nols, “die man is waarskynlik reeds onkapabel gesuip.” Santa is onverbiddellik. “As jy nie wil ry nie, sal ek.”

Bring my nog ‘n bier, asseblief.”

Daar was se

Surfing into men’s health >> Women encouraged to play a role in men’s health

M

OVEMBER has come to a close, but that doesn’t mean that men worldwide should stop paying attention to their

health. Mo Bros are supporting men’s health awareness by growing moustaches or by Mo Sistas getting involved in MOve challenges to get active. Mo Sista, Heather Clark from Port Shepstone, a multiple Masters World Champion surfer hosted a Movember MOve morning recently, encouraging her students’ dads to get active by learning how to surf at St Mike’s beach recently. Clark’s father Dave also joined in and hit the surf after a break of a few years. Both her parents were affected by cancer, so Movember is very personal for her. Clark encouraged women to play a role in the health of their male loved ones. “Give them support and positivity and encourage checkups, and never lose faith. IF you were planning on taking on the 2017 Comrades Marathon, you will have to wait another year. The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) said that the entry cap of 20 000 athletes was reached on Tuesday morning, necessitating the closure of the entry process. Runner Michael Makhudu, who couldn’t hide his excitement, said he has known for a few months that he wanted to take part in the race, but was discouraged after hearing that entries had closed. “I’d given up on entering until my friend told me on Monday that there’s about 33 entries left and that we’d better enter quickly. I feel very lucky and I’m super-excited,” said Makhudu. Entries for the Comrades 2017 opened on 1 September and were expected to close on Wednesday, but the targeted 20 000 cap was reached on Tuesday. Makhudu expressed his great intention to finish the race in the top 10 next year. In 2017 the race will be an “up run”, starting at the Durban City Hall at 5.30am and finishing at 5.30pm at the Scottsville Race Course in Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of around 88km. The 92nd edition of the ultimate human race is expected to once again boost the province’s

Marathon organisers confirmed that the round figure stood at 20 002 entries, excluding postal entries. ‘‘As we currently stand we have reached the 20 000 cap targeted for the event, but there are still postal entries yet to be counted. “We’re looking at around 21 000 entries overall,’’ said the CMA media liaison, Delaine Cools.

Bass fishing competition, a classic >> Biggest bass of the tournament was landed by Garreth Freeman weighing 1.81kg CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com

IRTY water and unfavourable fishing conditions didn’t dampen the spirts of anglers who took part in the fifth annual South Coast Bass Association Classic over the weekend. Anglers came from as far as Pietermaritzburg and the weather played its part in making a great event. “The fishing was really tough due to dirty water from the recent rainfall we had. “Some dams produced no fish while others produced fantastically,” said Manus Erasmus, chairman of the association.

“Farmers went out of their way to clean the dams of vegetation and enhance the fishing experience for anglers. We sincerely thank them for that,” he added. The biggest bass of the tournament was landed by Garreth Freeman weighing 1.81kg. Freeman had to attend to a work emergency in Mount Frere in the middle of the tournament, and rushed there, but still made it back in time to win the tournament, the prize of which was a three-man Legend kayak. Ian Logie caught the biggest bass in the men’s division. He won also won a Legend kayak. Britney de Bruyn won fishing tackle and

vouchers for catching the biggest bass in the women’s division. Joshua Fisher caught the biggest bass in the U18 division and won a Ferral kickboat. The biggest bass U12 was caught by “LJ” Mitchely, who walked away with a Pisces Predator kickboat. Every junior angler received a packet of lures, sponsored by Outdoor 365. “Our main sponsor from Legend Kayaks brought 10 kayaks along for the anglers to use and the juniors thoroughly enjoyed that,” said Erasmus. “We wish to thank the Kinderstrand Resort for a wonderful venue and all anglers for their support.”
