MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. HE chicken farm in Southport that the Uvongo SPCA had to shut down due to animal cruelty in April is becoming home to many criminal elements. Southport residents believe that much of the area’s crime is emanating from it as more people are making the abandoned property their home. “Since the farm was shut down we have noticed an increase in criminal activity in Burma, Kloof and Berea roads,” said Southport Crime and Safety Forum chairman, John Irven.

Irven and other members of the forum conduct regular patrols in the area and along the farm property. The Wandering Star Farm, previously known as High Ridge Farm, was taken over in 2010 by Mlungisi Mkhungo after government gave him R15 million to get a rural development project off the ground. Unfortunately, this did not go according to plan and the SPCA found the chickens starving, many had died from starvation, others were feeding off the carcases and hundreds had to be culled as they were full of disease. Absa then repossessed the farm and it is now under auction by a Durban auctioneer, Ian Wyles.

HEN police reservist, Ntombi Jula (36), arrived home one evening with her nine-month-old daughter in her arms, she had no idea that was the last time she would see her children, friends and family. Her lover, Maviyo Nelson Mthwane (42), approached her with a semi-automatic pistol and shot her in the chest, leaving her in agony, while he threw the stolen firearm in a rubbish bin - he had stolen the weapon from a policeman. She went into a coma, and two months later, died.

Several injuries over busy weekend IT was a busy weekend for lower South Coast emergency services as several accidents occurred. A woman was seriously injured and two others sustained mild injuries in a crash in Margate on Monday morning. Kwazulu Private Ambulance paramedics found one patient still in one vehicle. She was extricated and placed onto a trauma board and stabilised by paramedics. “It appears that the taxi rearended the car, which left the road and was pushed into an embankment,” said Kwazulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Belinda Catchpole. SAPS is investigating. On Sunday morning, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a collision at Umgababa. Reports from the scene indicate that a vehicle with five occupants had veered off the road and over-

Mthwane was sentenced to 20 effective years’ for murder, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a firearm and theft. Only Mthwane knows the details of that evening in May 2015, but he has refused to divulge the events that led him to kill the mother of his daughter. The court heard how Jula’s brother had intervened in the couple’s arguments on several occasions. This time, however, he could not stand up to an armed man and left the house. He feels that his intervention could have saved his sister, and lives with regret. After Mthwane shot Jula, her 13-year-old son arrived and was

first to see her, and is undergoing counselling for what he saw and tells his grandparents he wishes he could also die. Judgment and sentencing was passed at Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in what the magistrate, Nonesi Dlamini, described as a typical lover’s quarrel. “How do you kill the person that you appreciate, love and adore? We hear of many crimes in court that are professed to have be done in the name of love,” she said. She said there was no English word to describe Mthwane as he had killed before and served 10 years for the murder. “The only word I can think of is

turned before coming to rest about 100 metres down an embankment. Paramedics found that two people sustained serious injuries while three escaped with minor injuries. The patients were treated at the scene before medics transported them to a hospital in Scottburgh. On Saturday afternoon Netcare 911 attended a scene in Ramsgate where a taxi overturned on Fascadale Road. A taxi had rolled and came to rest on its roof. “Fourteen people escaped with

only minor injuries. Medics treated them at the scene before transporting them to hospital,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha. In a separate incident, 30 people sustained injuries from critical to minor in two separate accidents that happened approximately 10 minutes apart on Saturday morning. Emergency services received reports of the incidents around 5.30am. The first crash happened on the N2 near Wilsons Cutting where 15

a Zulu word – iqunga,” [a desire to kill]. There is no place for you in society and you have blood on your hands. That is going to stay on your conscience, that is if you even have a conscience,” she said. She said although the court is imposed to regard rehabilitation when sentencing, she asked how one is supposed to do that with this accused, who was released from jail in 2012, only to commit murder again in 2015. “This case is no different to the Oscar Pistorius case, but I won’t be guided by the sentence he received,” said Dlamini. “You are 40-year-old [man] and you are still killing people so it is clear that this is the path you have chosen … such barbaric incidents will not be tolerated.” Mthwane was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

were people injured after a taxi rolled. The second crash was a head-on collision in Izotsha between a car and a taxi. “Another 15 injuries were reported from that scene. Two were very serious,” said Catchpole. Patients from both scenes were triaged, stabilised and transported to various hospitals. At the same time Kwazulu Private Ambulance responded to another crash on the P200 near Gamalakhe. “Fortunately, there were no injuries,” said Catchpole. - Supplied.

Charity benefits from near disaster PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com

LOCAL charity, Louisiana Orphanage and Care Centre, will benefit from what might have been a tragedy after the Harbourview Super Spar building caught alight on Monday evening. The orphanage is one of Harbourview Super Spar’s beneficiaries and on Tuesday morning Spar owner, Graeme Milligan, donated all the goods that were in the damaged freezers and refrigerators to the orphanage. Milligan said instead of the goods going off in the outlet, he would rather give them to someone who really needs them. The refrigerators and freezers were damaged after the cables

connected to them were burnt in a fire that started in the generator room of the outlet. Milligan said it has not been established what started the fire, however, nothing else inside the shop was damaged. “We decided to donate the products that were in the fridge to the orphanage instead of keeping them until our refrigeration system has been repaired.” Many residents were under the impression that the entire building was on fire after pictures of it were circulated on social media. “It is fortunate that the fire was seen before spreading into the main shop. Nothing has been damaged inside the shop and trading will continue as usual,’’ said Milligan.

Wyles told the Fever on Wednesday that he has had several bids, but nothing has been finalised yet. The farm also has a banana plantation, which stretches for a few kilometres, but is unkept at the moment, however, somebody is harvesting the bananas. “It’s such a pity because all the infrastructure is still in place and someone could get this business revived. “People will have jobs and there won’t be any vagrants on the property,” said Irven. In the middle of the banana plantation is a block of six informal settlements where, the Fever was told, seven people live. When the Fever visited the farm on Tuesday, there were two women and a man present. “We have been living here for two weeks and we have permission from the man living in the main house to do so,” said the one woman. She said nobody pays any form of rent and they are allowed to take water from the main house on the farm as it still had a supply. The house also has electricity. It was evident to the Fever that a room next to the main house is also being occupied illegally as there was clothing and food inside.

Guests at the event included Nedbank staff and ward councillor Doug Rawlins, who spoke to the elderly advising them about banking, new developments and communication channels with their new councillor. Michelle Harris from Nedbank spoke about how they can make banking easy and how not to fall prey to scammers when withdrawing cash from an ATM. Karen Lehmann from MVA said more activities would be taking place throughout the week, including a performance by the MVA choir and the Creston College marimba band. HEN it comes to promoting health and fitness in the community, Raj Naganna is the man to speak to. The veteran marathon athlete initiated the Hope Walk that takes place every Thursday at 5.30pm at Hope Park in Marburg. The purpose of the walk is to encourage the community to get fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. “There are too many people with diabetes and this can be prevented and/or controlled with a healthy diet and regular exercise,” he said. Naganna added that parents should encourage their children to get

involved in the walk as there are many cases of child obesity as well. “Parents are reluctant to let their children play outside due to crime and safety issues, but this is a perfect and safe way to get your children outside and get them active,” he said. Although it is only a one kilometre circuit, it consists of gentle rises and slopes, which walkers are allowed to complete as many times as they wish. Participants can either walk or jog whatever suits their fitness level. Last Thursday, 54 people showed up for the walk in the park in Dairy Road. Children, adults and seniors gathered to make this an exciting event. “I’d like to see this number increase weekly and encourage everyone to

bring their friends and family,” he said. “This will be the start of exciting activities in the park and those who complete 10 walks will receive a medal.” Naganna said once the walk heads towards a steady pace, he will also introduce mountain bike riding at the park. Hope Park, an unused vacant piece of land, is a community park project which Pastor Reggie John got off the ground. A number of sponsors and volunteers have contributed to the success of the park over the years. Anyone interested in joining the group, can contact Naganna on 083 555 5021 or John on 082 822 7399. ‘Beacon of hope’ for abuse victims needs assistance PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede

H

OPE Village is a registered NPO - number 163-537 - that cares for abused women, children and elderly, and the founder, Shireen Govender from Port Shepstone, needs financial assistance to get her organisation on its feet. Govender said the organisation is a dream that came to her after going through an abusive relationship. “I started Hope Village via Facebook in 2014, and with the development from me writing about my past experience on Facebook I communicated with other women from abusive backgrounds, who feel that they have to remain in the relationships because they don’t have anywhere else to go. “This really bothers me as a victim of abuse and one who knows what they are going through,” said Govender. “There is a saying ‘you can start with nothing, and out of nothing and out of no way, a way will be made’. “A seed was planted in my heart a long time ago and that seed was Hope Village. I am hoping that the South Coast community will find it in their hearts to assist and build a home for the abused so they can live normal lives away from their abusers.” As Hope Village is a beacon of hope Govender asks for sponsors or donations to help her make her dream of helping abused people come true. She is currently looking for premises in Port Shepstone to run her organisation from. Govender says she is also offering meetings with victims and families on a weekly basis. For meetings, sponsor or donation, visit the Hope Village Facebook page or contact her on 074 692 7113 or email hopevillagekzn@ gmail.com

Building supplier turns three

>> Customers can look forward to a birthday bash with tons of specials

CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com

B

UILD it Marburg turns three this month and their focus is on you – the customer. The building supplies and related hardware store opened its doors in 2010, under the name Mr Hardware & Steel, by local businessman Yugen Moodley. Three years later, the store evolved into a Build it franchise. Moodley is very involved in the community and also assists those in need where possible. Lavinia Arumorgan, who recently took over as manager, has been with the Build it group since 2007 and is a hands-on manager who enjoys dealing with customers and contractors. Customers can look forward to a birthday bash with tons of in-store specials, giveaways and more. The main event takes place on 25 October, but specials will run throughout the month. Watch the press for details. “We pride ourselves on top customer service. Shopping at Build it isn’t on-

ly about getting top quality products at affordable prices, it’s also about the pleasant shopping experience,” she said. This is due to the fact that the customer is always a top priority and staff constantly attend training sessions at national and local level. “Our staff are up to date with the latest in products and trends in the building industry.” At the main celebration, clients can look forward to meeting representatives from various building material brands, demonstrations and promotions. There is also a till slip competition at the moment where clients stand a chance of winning a mountain bike if they purchase products to the value of R500 or more. Build it Marburg offers an in-store credit facility and free delivery on wet trade and direct deliveries within a 10kilometre radius. “We would like to thank our loyal customers for their continued support and promise they will always get the best service,” said Arumorgan.

THE Umbango River Conservancy will host its second annual trail run this weekend and this time the Port Shepstone Girl Guide Rangers will use the event as a fund-raiser. Six rangers are raising funds to visit the Girl Guiding World Centre in London. They will leave on 8 July, 2017. “So far the girls have managed to purchase their tickets, but they will need money for accommodation,” said leader Jolene Evans. Evans said the girls have been working extremely hard to make this a reality. “This teaches the rangers an

The event was held at Port Shepstone Senior Primary and coincides with Arbor Month. “The aim of this activity was to get pupils interested in the environment and its preservation,” said Morgan Naidoo, of the conservancy. A total of 10 local schools participated in two categories - Grade 3 and Grade 7. “The response from participants and their keenness was admirable. It was evident from their answers that much time was spent in preparation for this event,” he said. FEVER Dog on the Couch Hi Susan, I have recently remarried and my husband and I feel we’d like to add a dog to our family. I would love to get a puppy that I can treat as our new baby and develop a strong bond. But my husband feels we should rather give an older dog a chance. Is it possible for an older dog to bond with a new family? Won’t I just be taking on someone else’s troubles? Concerned Older pets certainly can bond very strongly with a new family. Animals are emotional beings and normally respond to anyone who loves them and

CONGRATULATIONS to the minister of Home Affairs for his courageous decision to refuse a visa to Stephen Anderson, the American pastor, and his 17 minions, who intended to come and spread his message of homophobic hate speech and God knows what else. spends enough quality time with them, treating them with kindness and sympathetic understanding and meeting their physical and emotional needs. Although rescued animals may have surrendered to neglect or abuse and have emotional scars that need time to heal, even these can respond to a second chance in life and become devoted pets. I have found time and again that gentle, sympathetic training yields good results, even in dogs who had been ‘written off’ as hopeless characters. Dogs retain juvenile characteristics throughout their lives. This neotenic trait has been bred over thousands of

years, which is another reason why dogs naturally become such devoted and loving pets. Normal behaviour in humans and other animals makes us feel the need to nurture and be protective of others with baby features. This is why it is so hard to pass a puppy by and not succumb to those big doleful or mischievous eyes. Unfortunately, this is also one reason why so many pets are abandoned once they outgrow the “baby face” appearance. It is also a serious negative reflection on our society, with especially bad repercussions for children growing up with such poor role models who are very irresponsibly teaching that lives are cheap and disposable. We all know that a baby grows up to be a teenager who will face hormonal and neurological re-wiring as they

IN accordance with the Constitution, the Bill of Rights guarantees the “right to freedom and security of the person” to all citizens, foreign national and illegal aliens. The person is to be free from all forms of violence, either public or private sources. Recent crime statistics indicate an escalation in serious and violent crimes and corruption. How many children are deprived of proper housing and basic rights of food and health? The media frequently exposes child rapes and abuse. Everyone has the right of access “to information held by the state”, which the ANC has attempted to conceal. everyone has the right to a fair trial. The rich and well-connected have managed to manipulate the justice system. The case must begin conclude without reasonable delay. Court cases are prolonged over numerous years. An explanation for this sorry state is that our prisons and courts are overrun with criminal cases. Can anyone provide an answer? What is defined as a state of emergency in a country when the armed forces are required to quell rebellion and violence? Are the universities of minor importance to be razed to the ground? Dr L.J. mature to adulthood. These periods of flux are not usually easy for the children, or for dogs or other animals – and nor for their keepers. Patience, guidance, empathetic consideration and training can develop a special personality and a rewarding relationship. Any relationship requires the input and qualities I have mentioned. Whether a puppy or an older dog, make an informed choice and follow the principles outlined above for the best results. Giving a home to an older pet can be so very rewarding. As my eight-year-old abandoned Border Collie “Chimney Sweep” would tell you, “an old dog can learn plenty new tricks and find great happiness in a new life”. Erecting tents need to follow building regulations TENTS for functions have become a good option for public events providing protection against the elements. Since a few tents have taken off in strong winds and have led to damage to property and loss of life, regulations were put in place to minimise the risk. The national building regulations and building standards Act number 103 of 1977 refers: Any building must have approval. A building is classified as a structure for human habitation irrespective of

materials used. Such approval may require a certificate by a structural engineer. The risk of fire, electrocution, and lightning must also be assessed. The municipality have two options available to comply with the act. The one is to submit a application form at the Uvongo offices at least two weeks before the event or function. The necessary arrangements are then done by the municipality and input from all departments concerned is collected.

court order served upon him threeand-a-half hours later. On Monday morning the SAPS prosecuting officer was seen and the case thrown out before it went to court with no Daff representative present. Beside a huge inconvenience, my friend has not received his catch “exhibit” back despite phoning Daff after his case was officially nulled. Does this not equate to theft? On the same day, I made a trip to Durban and less than three kilometres away the crayfish sellers were out on the side of the freeway illegally selling their “bunches”. It seems the authori-

ties do not have the will or want to do something about this ongoing problem. I have since heard bait shops along the coast have been rigorously checked and some issued hefty fines, some legitimate others for petty offences. Two divers I know on the North Coast were checked by Daff and asked what species of fish they had caught (not knowing the identity or quota of the species). Ski boaters at Shelly Beach have also been “blitzed” by the new force. While they have a big task and zero tolerance is necessary for legitimate

The other is to ask for permission from the municipal manager’s office where public land is used. The letter of approval will then require the organiser of the event to notify the relevant departments and ensure their participation and approval before commencement of the event. Leaving it to chance, you may find yourself without an event as the engineer may not be available to do an inspection just before or during an event when it is requested by an effected party to show your compliance certificate. Failing to comply is an offence and may lead to prosecution. For more information regarding the requirements, phone 039 688 2000 or 039 315 9236. Concerned Citizen

Students barking up wrong tree WHY are our tertiary students not rioting and trashing Luthuli House? I feel these students are knocking at the wrong door. The governing party prom ised the people of this country free education, water, etc., knowing full well that it is not ca pable of fulfilling that promise. Before you accuse me of being ignorant, I am well aware of the lines and/or borders between party and state politics. I just feel it is time that these students complained at the right place, ie: Luthuli House. All the talk about freebies came from there, it did not come from the state. SURELY the municipality should ensure that their workers, or whoever they employ to cut the verges and clean up neighbourhoods, are trained for the job. New Daff staff need training, uninformed THE Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Daff) has recently taken over KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife`s long standing contract. Eating out ‘fiasco’ alarming WE recently went out and parked across the road from an eatery because their six parking spots were full. We anticipated a lovely evening out. One of the three ladies on duty seated us and 15 minutes later we managed to coax one to take our order. An hour later white-bottom pizzas arrived. I remarked that I thought they had a wood-burn-oven. Our plates were whisked away and almost chucked down on another table. On inquiring about 15 minutes later, we were told “new pizzas” were being made. About three quarters of an hour later, two totally raw based pizzas arrived. They were on top, a yellowish sticky mass that lifted off totally with one lift of my fork. There were a few minute tasteless olives, four capers and no anchovies on top. Later our hardly touched pizzas were removed without any concern. Opposite us a couple had hardly touched their heap of white, hardly dressed pasta. Eating out has become a luxury and one expects service and value. An Italian name and a Marine Drive address is not enough. Disgusted Patron

The Department of Water and Sanitation through its No Drop Report awarded a score of 95.38 % to Ugu District Municipality ranking the municpality as the second best performing municipality in the province in terms reduction of non revenue water with special emphasis on water use efficiency and water losses. The non revenue water is currently sitting at 26.5% and there are plans in place to bring it further down to 21% by 2019. The municipality recently launched a leak detection and pressure management training centre. This is first of its kind in South Africa. The aim of the centre is to train the municipal plumbing teams to operate and maintain water supply systems effeciently.

ER AND WASTEWATER QUALITY SERVICE REGULATIONS TS COMMUNITY LITY RESULTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED

The implementation of the non revenue water reduction strategy for this financial year includes implemantation of the following programmes; . implementation of the pressure management . development of district metered areas . launch of the leak detection and pressure management training centre . water awareness campaigns . leak detection and repair . pipeline replacement . meter replacement

o KwaJali

UGU INTENSIFIES SAFE DRINKING WATER AND DECENT SANITATION: Ugu District Municipality has adopted Site Specific Water Safety Plans for its water treatment works; a key indicator in compliance to Blue Drop Certification Programme for Drinking Water Quality Regulation. Ugu District Municipality also adopted Site Specific Wastewater Risk Abatement Plans for its wastewater treatment works; a key indicator in compliance to Green Drop Certification Programme for effluent quality. The implementation of the plans will cost Ugu in the region of R184m. The plans outline the control measures that are enforced throughout the water and wastewater cycle to ensure adherence to required standards respectively.

Whilst the municipality employs all applicable resources towards conserving water, communities are urged to support the efforts made as we are trying to keep out of the critical drought threat period. The support needed can be in following ways;

. reporting of leaking pipes . paying of provision of water services . saving water consumption by refraing from; washing cars at full water pressure using clean drinking water for gardening avoiding the repair of eternal domestic leaks washing cars and laundry at communal standpipes

>> Syfers is bekend gestel van hoe onstellend duur data in SuidAfrika is

Die (vergeefse?) stryd om goedkoper kommunikasie

JOHAN PRETORIUS

D

Verlede week is ontstellende inligting bekend gestel.

“Goed, maar ek skiet jou onmiddellik vrek as jy my wil verkul. Gee my ‘n nuwe saal

vir my perd.” Die saal verander dadelik in ‘n nuwe. Pieter se oë rek. “Wat van ‘n nuwe vuurwapen? Hierdie rewolwer is al baie oud.” Skielik is daar ‘n Dirty Harry-magnum in sy hand. So gesê so gedaan.

The restaurant is run on “girl power”, a team comprising of Carol and Celeste and kitchen and bar staff. Their comprehensive menu consists of breakfasts, starters, mains, light meals, salads for the

ILD Coast Sun International restaurant, Chico’s, hosted the Fry’s Family Foods cookoff on Saturday night. A live broadcast of the cook-off was shot with host Karou Charou, who kept guests entertained with lucky draws and prize giveaways. Pricilla Du Toit, in the audience won the first prize of a wine hamper and R1 000 in cash. Before the cook-off started Charou asking the audience to write their names down and enter a lucky draw and they could be chosen to assist the guest chefs. Celebrity chef Thigam Naidoo, also the academic director of the South African Hospitality Institute, started and KwaZulu-Natal’s MasterChef Diena Naidoo, were the chefs to take part in the cook-off. Before the gas stoves started heating, Dr Paul Palmer, a chiropractor and leading plant-based nutritionist in South Africa, gave a nutritional talk on how he strives to educate his patients about the importance of a healthy lifestyle incorporating chiro-

practic, plant-based nutrition and exercise. He said animal foods as a food group promote cancer and plant foods have proved to protect against and fight cancer and convinced guests that Fry’s family food is the way to go. Chef Thigam Naidoo was the first to go in the lucky draw and drew out the name of Dave Harvey, who assisted her to make a stir fry using Fry’s Family Foods “chicken strips”.

Chef Diena Naidoo was the second chef to prepare a meal for the audience and chose to cook with his friend Myan Moodley, Wild Coast general manager, making butter chicken also using Fry’s Family Foods “chicken-style strips”, adding curry. The audience were served a buffet of Fry’s Family Food dishes and went home satisfied and educated.

Unique way of buying a brandnew Ford >> New way is designed specifically for funding new vehicles ITH Fords new way of buying a brandnew car with various op tions nothing is impossible, giving clients flexibility, choice and security.

At the recently held Spring Carnival Ford launched the new affordable options that are now available. Debbie Stewart of County Ford said the

Take the road less traveled with an EcoSport

A quieter ride Cities are noisy, but not inside the Eco Sport. Designed with an outstandingly qui et interior, the EcoSport turns even the busi est peakhour street into a relaxing haven. Fit in just about anywhere You want an SUV, but your life is in the city. That’s no problem with the EcoSport. Its urban dimensions make it easy to park and get around crowded city streets, yet its styling and ride height give you the confi dence of an SUV. Hill Launch Assist EcoSport comes with the secret to per fect hill starts. Hill launch assist holds the brake for a few seconds after you take your foot off, giving you time to smoothly accel erate, either up or downhill, without rolling or losing control. So if others are stopped close behind you on a slope, there’s no need to sweat.

Elevated ride height Even roads you take every day will look different in the EcoSport. It seats you high er, so you see more of what’s going on around you. Who knows what you might discover on the way? 200mm ground clearance When it comes to getting you where you want to go, the EcoSport means business. It puts 200mm of ground clearance be tween you and the road, potholes, rough surfaces or whatever else is in your way. And with good approach and departure angles, plus 550mm water wading, you’re basically ready for anything.

new options of buying Ford vehicle is just like taking out a cellphone contract. The new way is designed specifically for funding new vehicles, it guarantees the fu

ture value of the car and works on a kilome trebased agreement. “The features of the ‘Ford Cash Plan’ include that the client does not do regular payments, it gives the client an opportunity to drive an new car more of ten, has fixed interest rates for the loan du ration, gives them the option of renewing, returning or retaining the car with a guaran teed future value that protects client against unexpected fall in used cars,” she said. Option 1: renew choose another car, this option allows the client to trade in at County Ford or sell it privately so they can settle their existing account and then use the excess value over optional final pay ment, which can be used as a deposit. Option 2: return hand the car back, this option allows the client to return the car to

County Ford and a vehicle appraisal will be completed and as long as the car meets County’s wearandtear standards, is with in the agreed mileage and the account is up to date, there will be nothing else for the client to pay. Additional charges will be paid if wearandtear standards are no met. Op tion 3: retain keep the car, this gives the client flexibility to own the car at the end of the agreement and all they would need to do when payments have been made is to arrange payment of final optional pay ment, which is deducted at the start of the agreement with the purchase fee. Ford calls the client before the end of the contract to give them time to decide which option suits them. With Ford options the cli ent is in control.

The Ford EcoSport is available in a range of colours. Contact County Ford on 039 688 9200 Port Shepstone for more information.

ment. Chief risk officer for the bank, Konehali Gugushe says women need to see agriculture as an industry in which they can play a meaningful role. Speaking of women who have historically played a supporting role as subsistence growers, Gugushe says: “Although they contribute significantly to food supply, it is clear that agriculture is long overdue for a gender-based overhaul.” Economic trends After three months of surpluses, South Africa’s trade balance returned to a deficit in August. The deficit of R8.6 billion rocked analysts who had predicted a trade surplus of R3 billion for August. The main reason for the slump was attributed to low-

f

er exports of precious metals and minerals. The Barclays purchasing managers index (PMI) indicates a slowdown in manufacturing activity. Factory order volumes have declined and domestic selling price inflation has moderated indicating pressure on turnover growth heading towards year end. Year-on-year sales of new vehicles declined by 14.3% in September. Car sales dropped 14.4%, light commercial vehicles 14.8%, medium commercial vehicles 9% and heavy vehicles 10.8%. Analysts report that the decline in new vehicle sales is representative of subdued economic activity due to low business and consumer confidence.
