Mr Solomon stands accused of theft of the amount, not of fraud. ‘South Coast Fever’ apologises for the error in our reporting.

EMOCRATIC Alliance leader, Mmusi Maimane, DA provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango and local councillors visited Mkholombe informal settlement last Friday. The news of Maimane visiting the area was known to the ANC, who ensured they were also visible and handed out food parcels and party T-shirts. However, the people of Mkholombe divided into two groups - some in yellow T-shirts and others in blue. Both groups gathered on the road singing in favour of their party. At Maimane’s arrival SAPS officers made sure the situation didn’t erupt and kept the rowdy ANC group away from him as he made his way through the squatter camp. One of the first things Maimane saw was the illegally connected electrical cables running along the road, and said he was not impressed.

ONSTRUCTION at the Merlewood Mixed Income Housing Project has not stopped according to Hibiscus Coast Municipality Manager, Max Mbili. “The project is incomplete … we handed over 64 houses to beneficiaries in December, who told us they will be patient and wait for water and electrical connections. “Now these same people say that they don’t know what is happening,” said Mbili. The plans accommodated the construction of 228 houses, however, only 66 were built about three years ago and the contractor failed to deliver.

Merlewood housing project ‘not on hold’ The houses were vandalised while the project was put on hold as HCM was appointing a new contractor to rectify the damages. “Once the houses were fixed we told beneficiaries we will give them their title deeds and they can occupy the houses so that vandalism does not take place. “They agreed to this, without having water or electricity and told us at least they will have a roof over their head.” The same contractor, who repaired the vandalised homes, was then

appointed to continue with building the rest of the houses, however, the plan of action changed so that the town planning layout could be reviewed. “The contractor is going to first concentrate on infrastructure such as roads, water and electricity before anything else is built. Planning and design for this is nearing completion,” said Mbili. Spokesperson for Hibiscus Coast Municipality, Simon April, said these are all technical aspects, which the community cannot see.

Four injured in car accident

He said HCM appointed an independent electrical engineer to plan and design the provision of electricity for the entire project area. “This work has already been done and the designs are currently with Eskom for the final determination and costing modelling,” said April. HCM is also waiting on decisions with regard to a bus-taxi route from Cogta and professional information from the town planner, land surveyors and engineers. “Unfortunately, this is another process which will be more of profes-

sional input rather than physical work the community can see and hence, the impression might be that these behind-the-scene activities, which are reported to the community, but due to the high level of expectation and current politically charged period of electioneering, are easily described as putting the project on hold.” Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu said these matters were discussed at council and it was the ward councillor’s duty to take the information to the ward. The project as a whole is expected to be complete by April 2017.

Lubanyana’s sister Tholakele Lubanyana said the incident was like a movie. “It happened so fast and its clear that the gun shots were not meant for Ntokozo, but for Mosley.” She said looking through the door glass the attack ers must have thought they were shooting at Mosley. “Both my sisters, Mosley and Ntokozo, are the same size and the attackers must have been sure it was Mosley they were shooting at and fired more shots even when they saw her lying on the ground.” She said they continue to live in fear because the attackers know they shot the wrong person and can return at any time, although they are under police pro tection and are grateful for this. .

lised the injured and transported them to hospital. “Various ambulances attended at the scene and those who sustained injuries were taken to hospital. No fatalities were reported,” said Catchpole. - Supplied.

FOUR people were rescued from the sea off Shelly Beach when their skiboat capsized on Sunday at 2.30pm. The two dult males, aged 48 and 60, and two young males believed to be aged eight and 11, were from Johannesburg.

On arrival, NSRI found all four people safely ashore and not injured after being assisted by other boaters and bystanders, who help to recover their ski-boat, Lollipop.

third time I was told to make a deposit I was given an account number with the name of the stokvel group and not that of an individuals account.” She said she waited for her money to be deposited into her account, but nothing was reflected in her account. “I inquired from admin as to why I had not received my money and they told me I had not made a deposit, so I sent the deposit slips as proof,” she said. It has been a week now and she hasn’t received anything and has even been blocked from the group, and warns people about these WhatsApp stokvels, saying there are not legitimate and people are merely trying to get rich off other people illegally.

PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com CROWD-FUNDING, when a group of people form a stokvel, has become extremely popular among young people. From the nationwide MMM global social financial network to “WhatsApp group stokvels”, the amount of people who lose large amounts of money is increasing, yet people continue with it and have not learnt their lesson. The WhatsApp group stokvel has an administration person who recruits group members, charging them an administration fee ranging

from between R150 to R1 000. Once the person has paid the fee they are told to bid an amount they can afford that day. Once the list of bidding money is displayed on the group chat, a name is selected and whoever bids on the amount requested by the number selected for the day, that bidder has to deposit the money into the bank account of the person who requested it and the bidding rolls over to the next day. However, many members have complained about these stokvels saying they haven’t received their money. On Thursday a lady from a group of church members told the Fever

she is tired of these stokvels and wants her money. The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, said she deposited money on 16 June into one of the “stokvel” members bank account and was told that in 48 hours she would have the money, plus interest deposited back into her account, however, until now she hasn’t received anything. “I am really disappointed by what is happening in my stokvel group. “The first time I was asked to deposit money I did so and the second time as well and I got the money back on both occasions, but the

HELLY Beach will be one of the four locations in KwaZulu-Natal that boasts a techno hub. A sod-turning ceremony was held at the site near the Shelly Beach Memorial Park on Thursday morning. The science and technology hub will benefit high-tech entrepreneurs, researchers, property developers, business owners and academia in creating jobs and attract-

ing investment. “We are pleased to have reached this stage and would like to thank the Hibiscus Coast Municipality for the cooperation in this project,” said Simiso Magagula, head of the KZN Provincial Treasury department. “We are pleased to see that work has begun and that we are more ahead than we originally anticipated,” he added. Hibiscus Coast Mayor, Nomusa Mqwebu, said that the techno hub is also something future generations will bene-

fit from. “The municipality would like to thank all those involved in making this initiative possible,” she said. The purpose of the hub is to attract investment from organisations that are in the research, innovation and technology sectors. It will also serve as an incubator for start-ups in the IT sector. It is the same concept as an incubator in which a baby is kept until he or she has been nurtured and is strong enough to live out of it.

Mayor Nthombifikile Gumede, told everyone at the address on Monday that the theme gave a true reflection of the state of Ugu District. The address was held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre where the six municipalities - Vulamehlo, Umdoni, Umzumbe, Hibiscus Coast, Ezinqolweni and Umuziwabantu - were discussed. “I stand here today to say with no fear of contradiction that Ugu District is better today than it was yesterday. RDP house remains unfinished 10 years later PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com FOR more than 10 years Zinhle Ndlovu of Ward 9 Gcilima has been in and out of municipal offices and the Department of Housing asking about her RDP house that was supposed to be built and completed 10 years ago. Ndlovu’s house was part of the first RDP housing project in KwaXolo area. “I am tired of the running around trying to get answers from the munici-

The last response I received was when ward councillor Richard Nyembezi and I went to the municipality together and we were told that a builder will be sent to check the house and they will complete it that month,” said Ndlovu. Ndlovu said the builder came to see the house and suggested that the house be demolished as the windows and material used was old and damaged and said they would have to rebuild the house from scratch. Opposition party leader visits informal settlement Maimane said finding that there are still people living in such conditions says a lot about the ruling party. “To find that there people living in such condi tions says a lot about the leadership in this local municipality. How can one say that people have rights when their rights of proper housing are vio lated,” said Maimane. Maimane said when one speaks of change they should know what they talking about and live up to it. “Today when we speak of change we know what we talking about. We will not let ANC leaders say they are bringing change when they are getting rich from tenders and not doing anything to change the lives of the people who vote for them,” he said. Maimane said since 1994 people have been vot ing for the ANC, saying they are voting for freedom, but freedom is not what he is seeing today. “The ANC is corrupt and is bringing corruption to the people. A hungry person cannot proclaim freedom,” he said.

Maimane spoke about people not getting the title deeds for their RDP houses. He said all of that is corruption on the part of the ANC. “I am aware that people in this area applied for RDP houses and were not given title deed for those houses. People should be given title deeds first, they should not have to wait for the house to have electricity first then they get their title deeds that is wrong,” said Maimane. Maimane encouraged the people of Mkho lombe to vote for the DA candidate who will be run ning for councillorship in the upcoming elections, saying if they do so and the DA leads in the area they will see change. “If the DA governs in this area there would be change, jobs would be created and living condi tions would change,” he said. Mkholombe people were impressed with the words of Maimane and said it means a lot to them to see the president of a political party in their area. Maimane then went to Palm View near Albers ville to encourage residents to vote for the DA.

S part of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Global Awareness Campaign 2016, St Martins De Porres School staff and pupils participated in a fund-raiser in support of MND sufferers. MND is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any

specific order. The campaign was co-ordinated by teacher Kubashnee Perumal in memory of her mother, who lost her life due to MND in February. St Martins spokesperson, Balo Madikane, said the staff and pupils were very supportive in the fund raising. “On the day staff and pupils released ballons in memory of loved ones lost through MND,” said Madikane. Perumal said co-ordinating the campaign was a personal journey she wanted to undertake as she experienced this first-hand with her mother. She said the campaign was fulfilling, and attendees were interested, although shocked to learn about MND.

“Many realised for the first time that some of their family members and even community members displayed symptoms of this nature and were unaware of how to deal with them.” Perumal said since the campaign she has received many requests to hold MND awareness campaigns in rural areas and at various organisations. She said the programme also gave her a sense of belief that this disease can be overcome with greater understanding. “My mum was a sufferer and in memory of her I want to ensure that something can be done in this field of study to find a cure or even some way of easing the suffering of victims of MND,” said Perumal.

NPO to hold fun day THE Pro Deo Care Group invites everyone to an open fun day for people living with disabilities on 21 July at the Lions Club Hall in Ramsgate. The purpose of the day is for Pro Deo to interact with people with different physical needs and get to know how to assist them. Pro Deo is a non-profit interchurch organisation that provides, among other things, home care for the elderly and the frail, hospital visits and the provision of wheelchairs and walkers. They are also involved at the weekly cancer clinic in Port Shepstone. Eloise van Niekerk of Pro Deo said the organisation is also now in a position to extend its service to the community with a 24-hour home care service for the elderly, frail, the disabled as well as cancer patients. “This service will only include assistance with basic daily living activities such as grooming, mobilisation out of bed assistance, feeding as well as staying with patients while giving family members some time off,” said Van Niekerk. All patients will be visited and evaluated by a professional nurse to establish the specific needs. This will be done by appointments prior to the placement of care workers. The Ramsgate Lions Club Hall is at Glenmarkie Drive and proceedings start at 11am. For more information, contact Wolfie on 083 271 3036 or Doreen on 083 243 9681. - Supplied.

N commemoration of Youth Month, PhumlaniM Foundation visited Bashise Primary in Mvutshini recently. The purpose of the visit was to teach pupils the true meaning of 16 June. Phumlani Mzobe, foundation founder and one of the guest speakers at the event, reminded pupils that this remains a special day not only for the South African youth, but also international children. “Going to school was never easy as most of our heroes had to repeat classes more than twice because of a lack of schools in rural areas and

townships,” said Mzobe. He said the day is not a public holiday meant for drinking and indulging in drugs, as many do. Mzobe said he was concerned about the increasing number of girls who fall pregnant while in primary school. “What do you call this thing of yours? Young girls as young as 11 are getting pregnant, this is a risk to your general health. “This is not what Steve Biko and Anton Lembede fought for.” At the event Miss Gamalakhe, Maneti Dlezi spoke to the female pupils telling them about her journey and the lessons she learnt in the process of being crowned Miss

Gamalakhe. “Miss Gamalakhe is not just a pageant, it is a platform for young people to meet great minds and connect with their communities,” said Dlezi. She told them to look after themselves and develop self-love before expecting anyone to love them. “Independent thinking is very important in a world that constantly takes advantage and undermines women.” Principal Mr Mzotho and organiser Phaphaza Lubanyana said they were pleased with what speakers had to say. Mzotho said the visit will have a huge impact on pupils and will bring change.

Council approves consolidated budget PRECIOUS GUMEDE

PRECIOUS GUMEDE

>>precious.gumede@media24.com HIBISCUS Coast Municipality Council was called to a special meeting on Thursday. The meeting was to discuss and approve the consolidated budget for the new Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for the 2016/2017 financial year. The total budget for the Ezinqoleni and Hibiscus Coast municipalities, which both form Ray Nkonyeni is R982.8 million, with a projected annual operating income of R837.2 million, annual expenditure of R836.3 million. With a number of issues raised by opposition parties wanting explanations on a few adjustments, which chief financial officer, Nolubabalo Gqola, asked council to approve from the

2015/2016 budget, it took council time to approve the consolidation budget. Gqola explained that adjustments to the budget will cater for entries that will go through as a result of the yearend process in preparation of the annual statement in which she presented to council on the day. “No money will be taken from council, but since both Ezinqoleni and HCM budgets were approved in May, they will both still run with the same budget from 1 July until September before the municipalities join. HCM speaker Cllr Ronnie Nair then asked council if they approve of the consolidated budget for Ray Nkonyeni and by 24 votes to four DA votes, the consolidated budget was approved by council.

COMMUNITIES from Ndaya and Amahlongwa responded well to tourism awareness campaigns arranged by the development team at Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) recently. The events took place at Ndaya Community Hall in Vulamehlo and Amahlongwa Community Hall in Umdoni. Also in attendance were representatives from Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal. Each agency and organisation presented valuable and informative information. Ugu South Coast Tourism Development co-ordinator, Maxwell Mhlongo spoke about tourism at the

event. Nikki Tilley from USCT said demonstrations were given by Umdoni lifeguards, who, through their educational messaging, reminded the community about beach safety. “The lifeguards reminded the community about beach safety, which included tidiness and the key do’s and don’ts pertaining to beach safety,” said Tilley. Tilley said given the success and interest shown by the community during the campaign, USCT tourism has committed to train 12 crafters in customer service before the end of July. “The objective of the training is to develop emerging businesses by equipping them with skills required when dealing with tourists," she said. - Supplied.

AT a media briefing at Ugu South Coast Development Agency boardroom yesterday Hibiscus Coast Mayor Cllr Nomusa Mqwebu announced that informal settlement residents will be given free electricity to eradicate izinyokanyoka - illegal connections. Mqwebu said Mkholombe and KwaMasinenge are two areas which will benefit from this government initiative to install electricity while they try to sort out proper housing for settlement dwellers. “This government also saw the need for people in these areas to enjoy the fruits of the new dispensation while living in informal settlements and have access to electricity while the issue of decent shelter is being addressed,” said Mqwebu.

Once these areas have electricity uncontrolled fires will be reduced or eradicated. The process will start in September as Eskom is in the process of appointing a contractor. Mqwebu said the municipality is concerned that there are people who have heard of these plans and have started to get people, especially those from Mkholombe, to protest demanding electricity so that come September and the construction starts, they can claim victory. “We want to make it clear that this is solely an initiative of the leadership of the municipality after realising the challenges experienced by communities in the informal settlements. “We want to assure these communities that this will happen as funding has been secured for this purpose and we ask for patience, said Mqwebu.

TOURISM 360 Why many South Africans are not tourists WE on the South Coast are, because of our excellent beach, activity and rural of ferings, very much a popular destination for the domestic South African market, but in terms of nationally the tourism sector is in many respects just scratching the surface. The market potentials for our consumers, who generally do not travel, are significant. Interestingly the SA Tourism Review 2015 conducted a survey as to why South Africans are not proactive tourists and the outcome of the study is quite in formative. Some 41% indicated that the main reason they do not travel is because quite simply they could not afford it. We

on the South Coast are recognised as a valueformoney destination so in many respects we need to convince the SA public who may be financially border line that they can in fact afford trips here and should visit. About 21% of respondents indicated they had no reason for taking a trip our challenge during our promotional cam paigns is to give them a reason to come, by virtue of our product and experience diversity, coupled with events that suit specific market niches and interests. Time constraints were cited by 19% of respondents, which is a pity because recreation through travel is a healthy way of destressing and everybody

Dear Susan, I ADOPTED a dog six months ago and all went well until last week. Sam, a rescued dog, has started chewing up my six-year-old’s story books and my clothes. We are in the process of moving house and the added stress of the dog problem is more than I can cope with. Please help. Pat Dear Pat, Firstly, it often takes time for a rescued dog to settle into a new home. The adaption period may unfold in various stages, the first of which is often referred to as the ‘honeymoon.’ Generally I’d have suggested that in this case the ‘honeymoon’ is over and you’re experiencing a different phase in the settling-in process. This is because previously unseen behaviour issues might surface once the dog feels securely “at home”. However, in your case it is much more likely that Sam is sensing and reacting to the tensions in your home brought about by the moving process. In a stressful situation all family members, including pets, experience the tensions and react in their own ways. Tension alters the way we speak and behave and smell. All this will be picked up by the dog. The items chosen by Sam and the method of destructive venting strongly indicate a need to re-sample the once-familiar you. I don’t know how other family members are reacting, but the same probably applies there. Sam most likely wonders what became of the original Pat, so is experiencing separation anxiety. Coping mechanisms such as chewing are a symptom of this. The chewing, for instance, releases endorphins which are “feelgood” chemicals that make the sufferer feel better. The items Sam has chosen will be imbued with your scent. That’s why dogs in such situations often chew up things like books and remote control devices. It has been established that moving house is among the most high-stress undertakings one is likely to experience in life. Unfortunately when caught up in the activities that moving house entails, not only are we frazzled, but our normal routine is disrupted. Sam, who has been through a homeless period, understandably needs the reassurance of sensing safety and security in established routine and consistency in all the aspects of family life that recently became familiar. The solution to this lies in understanding the dog’s anxiety and then working out ways to reassure him that you and your family have not changed, and that you are still together with him. For example, if you are rushing about frantically, packing things and trying to work out what to put where, take a moment to reassure him that he is still part of the family. Try to find a voice that betrays no tension; give him a pat and a hug. You and your family should find this therapeutic too. Giving him things to relieve his chewing needs when you are distracted or too busy will also be of relief. A Kong toy can be stuffed with tasty treats and will keep him occupied while boxes are packed. - Susan Henderson© accredited animal behaviourist. Tone of letter not justified underprivileged. By avoiding these points and labouring negatives you say a lot about your standpoint. You admit that the education system requires major attention “as a matter of urgency”, but the point you

quence of which generations of children desperately in need of decent education have missed out on an opportunity to make better lives for themselves. Instead of improving the means of education, the government has lowered the standard. Dr Peltz refers to cheating being organised by corrupt teachers, of incompetent, unqualified teachers buying their positions, of people being promoted as a matter of course regardless of their failures, of pass marks being lowered to ridiculous levels, and more which is all a matter of public record. This is part

If people’s criticisms of the ANC are severe, they are justifiably so. The tone of your letter to which I have referred was not justified gloss over is that this urgency was due 20 years ago. The ANC government has failed dismally to redress it’s appalling shortcomings, as a conse-

of the legacy of the ANC, which clearly has no notion of “urgency” in righting the wrongs that have led us to be seen as yet another failed African state. Of course this applies not only in the field of education, though that is the failed foundation preventing progress and exacerbating the interminable degeneration we have been seeing in all government departments for more than twenty years and, at this rate, will be seeing for the rest of our lives. No nation can survive such a sustained onslaught. If people’s criticisms of the ANC are severe, they are justifiably so. The tone of your letter to which I have referred was not justified. Thank you to hospital MY wife had an operation on 30 June at Netcare Margate Hospital and was released the same afternoon. Something happened in those few hours that made us realise that not all is as bad as we hear. She had the highest praise to the staff in the surgical department for their care and service. As my wife was a nurse long ago, she noticed the cleanliness of the hospital and the special care the nurses took to make sure she was well and comfortable. I thank Netcare Margate Hospital for taking such good care of her and Dr Lourens, well done. We appreciate everything and thank you dearly. Dries and Adri du Plessis Uvongo

Supermarkets, ditch mangled trolleys HERE is a question for some local supermarket managers - why do you make grocery shopping such a difficult, unpleasant and awkward experience? We are obliged to pay for our purchases with good quality, undamaged money, yet to select these goods, we are forced to utilise pieces of mangled scrap metal that masquerade as supermarket trolleys, whose sole means of mobility appear to have lost all their wheel bearings and tyres, and which break into a speed-wobble at nothing greater than walking pace, making it impossible to push them in a straight line over even the shortest distance. Why don’t you repair or ditch them? In their current state of (dis)repair, they impact, sadly, on your corporate image. B. Swart

but suddenly, on the day of Maimane’s visit, we found a vehicle loaded with ANC T-shirts and activists handing them out together with flyers. Their activists were singing their songs and trying to intimidate the locals not to support the DA. We also noticed that a huge truck was offloading food and fresh produce, which I assume was part of the “Food for Waste” HCM programme. The strange thing is, everyone involved was wearing ANC T-shirts. It is quite clear that the ANC confuses party and state. Nevertheless, when Mmusi arrived, he was greeted by a huge crowd of enthusiastic DA supporters who outdanced and out-sang the miserable booing attempt from the outnumbered ANC comrades. What a bunch of losers THE leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mmusi Maimane, visited Port Shepstone on 1 July while on his countrywide campaign trail for the local government elections due to take place on 3 August. The Ugu South constituency decided to take him to Mkholombe informal settlement to witness first-hand the conditions which the community has to survive and live under. The DA advertised this visit within the community well in advance and there was excitement from within the community for this visit. The reason we wanted him to go there was to see the filthy conditions, dangerous illegal electrical connections, open toilets and few standpipes for water, etc. During all our previous visits the ANC were nowhere to be seen apart from a faded T-shirt here and there,

IN his letter titled “Response lacks neither surprise nor credibility” (23 June), ANC Councillor Ronnie Nair refers to a letter by another of your correspondents, thus: “Dr Peltz’s reactions to my previous response … lacks neither surprise nor credibility. With her outpourings of confusing statistics, statements and vitriol, she continues in the same refrain of absurd utterances and insults. Her blinded fixation and her eagerness to attack the ANC and the government causes her to miss the point of the argument by a mile.” Mr Nair, in your attempts to defend the indefensible, being the failings of the ANC and the government, which are one and the same, you are indulging in vitriolic bombast, nit-picking and typecasting. Dis my man of my vrou wat my irriteer, of die ander bestuurder, of die ellendige klerk daar in die kantoor.

“is jy nou heeltemal besimpeld?”

Ezinqoleni bids farewell with clean audit FEVER REPORTER >>precious.gumede@media24.com PHOTO: PRECIOUS GUMEDE

THE soon-to-be-amalgamated Ezinqoleni Municipality received an award for its clean audit in the 2015/2016 financial year at the Cogta awards at the Durban ICC recently. Ezinqoleni Mayor Amon Mpisi said the municipality has received a clean audit for two years, which is a milestone for the municipality, and which other municipalities only dream about. At the awards the mayor thanked his officials and councillors for their good work. “This award is due to the good work and relationship the councillors and municipal officials have,” said Mpisi. Mpisi said as the day of the amalgamation draws near they are saying goodbye to Ezinqoleni Municipality and Hibiscus Coast and hello to the new Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. “We are saying our goodbyes to HCM and Ezinqoleni municipalities with a smile because of the great years we had as Ezinqoleni Municipality. We leave behind a legacy,” he said.

The upbeat event founder, John Irven, Ugu South Coast Tourism chairperson, encourages visitors. “Come join the fun and discover our magical blue flag beaches. We have created this annual event to highlight our unique and beautiful beaches that re main the number one tourism asset on the KZN South Coast. We are especially pleased that funds raised by this event will be donated to our local community project Pollyanna’s Place.” The eightkilometre walk stretches over some of the most exquisite beach terrain and participants can look forward to local guides discussing fauna and flora whilst en route this exciting walk. Lazer 911 as well as local marshals will be assisting the tourism associa tion with marshalling and the safekeeping of partici pants. Youth move community forward W

ILD Coast Sun Resort and Casino hosted Grade 12 pupils from the surrounding schools last week in commemoration of Youth Month and the youth of 1976 who played a pivotal role in South Africa’s democracy. The event was organised by the Eastern Cape Gambling Board in partnership with the Mbizana Trust, Wild Coast Sun and Mbizana Local Municipality in a bid to assist the youth in dealing with struggles that affects the youth today. The presentation focused on the study and mastery of science and technology in the 21st century. The theme of the day was, “Youth Moving South Africa forward”. Myan Moodley, Wild Coast Sun

Resort and Casino general manager, opened with a powerful speech quoting the importance of education and the youth’s contribution to what South Africa will become in the future. The most important speakers of the day were Akhona Bongwa, a 22year-old slots technician intern who is finishing her tertiary qualification in electrical engineering, and the reigning Miss Eastern Cape, Zimi Mabunzi, who both serve as living testament that hard work and focus pays off. There was communication as pupils got a chance to ask the speakers questions and advice on certain life challenges they come across. Edutainment on responsible gam-

bling and awareness on problematic gambling, courtesy of National Responsible Gambling Foundation, took centre- stage as the day drew to an end and pupils were treated to lunch at Chico’s. Ntlantla Dlamini a Grade 12 pupil from Marelane Senior Secondary said she gained a lot from the speakers. “I felt motivated knowing that I will be able to make a living after school not by only seeking a job, but by starting my own business creating employment for others. “I will use the knowledge and skills from tertiary not only to further a career, but to develop South Africa,” she said. - Supplied.

Plant rehabilitation begins at Renishaw Hills RENISHAW Hills, the new mature lifestyle village on the South Coast, is centred on the natural beauty of the region with a focus on restoring the indigenous flora throughout the development. This belief is behind the indigenous rehabilitation project being led by renowned South African landscaper and botanist, Elsa Pooley, with assistance from a leading expert in rehabilitation in KZN, Geoff Nichols. The Renishaw Hills project, which is already under way, aims to return the area, as closely as possible, to its original form, removing alien vegetation while planting local species to enhance the region’s biodiversity. This is being funded by Renishaw Property Developments – a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited, the JSE stock exchange-listed organisation driving the Renishaw Hills development near Scottburgh. The first phase of the rehabilitation has already begun with the cutting down of invasive alien trees, including gum trees and other Australian species. Those on very steep slopes, have been ringbarked. “Although the trees are being cut down, the stumps will remain, leaving the root system in place in order to prevent erosion,” explained Pooley. “As these gum trees use a lot of water, the area will soon see a big improvement in the water supply with their removal.” Every aspect of the work, which is being performed in conjunction with Mpambinyoni Conservation Development’s estate manager, Gareth Hampson, follows the guidelines of the Environmental Impact Assessment that was carried out in preparation for the development. All plants being removed are category one and two on the government’s alien invasive plant species list, rendering their removal necessary. The tree removal stage will only last a few months, although the Renishaw team will continue in the elimination of all other alien invasives. Clearing IAPs is a tough, work-intensive process that requires regular follow-ups. It will continue as part of the regular estate management to ensure there is no re-emergence of the opportunistic plants. “Because of the size of the project the restoration and rehabilitation will be done in stages,” explained Pooley. The project has created about 80 new jobs with all staff receiving thorough training. The trainee manager holds a diploma in horticulture and is currently undergoing training in the various aspects of practical gardening, garden maintenance and staff control. The Izinyoni Indigenous Nursery at Crocworld Conservation Centre has been set up specifically to produce enough of the correct plant material for returning natural vegetation to the estate. The nursery boasts one of the biggest ranges of indigenous flowers, trees and shrubs in the country. The final result of the project will see a vast improvement in the biodiversity of the area, bringing with it an abundance of natural bird, insect and animal life. The wetlands will potentially become great birding areas while managing the heavy rainfall more efficiently than the current farming systems. Phillip Barker, managing director of Renishaw Property Developments, said that, although the rehabilitation project was a vast undertaking, the developers were committed to ensuring it was done properly from start to finish. “Elsa and Geoff have vast experience in the field of vegetation rehabilitation with a real knowledge and understanding of South African plants. They are providing essential guidance to the teams under them, ensuring this knowledge and commitment to the indigenous flora and fauna continues throughout the development,” said Barker. - Supplied. Explore more with Renault >> Limited edition Duster on offer

M

ORE than 10 000 people have bought a Renault Duster since its September 2013 launch, and to mark this milestone, Renault has launched a limited Explore edition of its popular sport utility vehicle. Selling for R258 900, the 4x2 Explore comes with an array of on-board extras. But, warns Renault’s product manager Jeffrey Allison, you’d have to put foot to get one, for they mean what they say with “limited edition”. Allison said only 100 units of the Explore edition will be sold in South Africa, all at the same price as the standard Renault Duster 1,6 16V Dynamique 4x2. Lo ts extra, except the price Allison said all Renault models are known for being “all-inclusive” with their specification levels, intelligent technologies as well as active and passive safety features and fitments. The Renault Duster SUV line-up is no exception. An upgrade of its 1,6 Dynamique 4x2 sibling, the Duster 1,6 77 kW Dynamique 4x2 Limited Edition Explore comes with even more equipment included. • Duster-branded nudge bar. • New Limited Edition 16-inch alloy wheels. • Wheel arch protectors. • Reverse camera. Under the hood Renault’s 1,6 16 V petrol engine has received high praise for its reliability and top performance. Naturally aspirated, this popular powerplant produces maximum power output of 77 kW at 5 750 rpm and peak torque of 148 Nm at

3 750 rpm, while maintaining enviable fuel consumption levels (7,6 litres per 100 km in the combined cycle). The Duster Dynamique Limited Edition Explore is as at home on highways, in cities and suburbs as it is off the beaten track. Pressing all the right buttons for a new breed of driver with diverse demands behind the wheel, the 1,6 16 V engine delivers driving pleasure and absolute peace of mind whatever the road conditions. An authentic SUV that’s tough, unpretentious and versatile, the Renault Duster SUV is the proven fit for any individual or family seeking adventure. What the owners said Rugged and reliable, Renault’s Duster SUV is just the ticket to take the family almost anywhere. The first Renault model designed to meet stringent European standards, yet be capable of conquering international markets where usage and road conditions are considerably more rugged, the Renault Duster line-up continues to be a formidable contender in South Africa’s

BUSINESS MATTERS Business commentary COLIN PROUDFOOT NATIONAL and international eco nomic “news” would indicate an in surmountable uphill battle where most things are beyond our control. Low growth forecasts, rising unem ployment, looming recessions, et al, fill the business publications. South African manufacturers, blaming cheap imports, predict fur ther declines in manufacturing ac tivity. Discussions between govern ment, labour and business at the highest level result in the same in tellectual mumbo jumbo state ments about concerted efforts to

jump start economic growth and create jobs. More committees, forums and study groups are put together while more and more South Africans suf fer due to rising unemployment, in come inequality and lack of eco nomic opportunity. The classic definition of insanity is continuously doing the same thing but somehow expecting a dif ferent result. If cheap imports lead to job cuts in the manufacturing sector then for heaven’s sake stop doing it. The South African econo my will never grow sustainably without an expanding manufac turing sector. The South African

economy will never grow sustaina bly unless the retail sector actively promotes locally made goods. Focus on these two issues will provide the growth jump start so desperately needed. If this sounds simplistic then perhaps we need to remember that the essence of pro found insight is indeed simplicity. In closing, a huge thumbs up to all at Hibiscus Coast Municipality for achieving a clean audit as well as the award for Consistency in Ex cellence. In the South African con text we, as residents of the Hibiscus Coast, don’t realise how fortunate we are to have a municipality to be proud of. Sure there are issues but these awards reaffirm that we need to focus on solutions and not dwell on the problems..

BUSINESS REPORTER The good ACCORDING to Statistics SA, producer price inflation slowed to 6.5% year on year in May from 7% in April. Market expectations were that the PPI would come in at around 6.9%. The main contributors to the annual rate of 6.5% were food products, beverages and tobacco products. The moderation in PPI inflation and the recent slowdown in consumer price inflation to 6% could see the SA Reserve bank holding interest rates at the next monetary policy meeting in July. With the SA economy facing significant risk of slipping into recession this year, maintenance of interest rates may just tip the scale in favour of avoiding negative growth. Meanwhile, the SA Revenue Service reported a surge in the trade surplus for May to R18.7 billion. This represents the biggest surplus since 1996 resulting in the Rand rebounding against the U.S. dollar and other international currencies. Exports increased by 14% to R104.7 billion while imports decreased to R86 billion.

f

The trade surplus continues to improve the country’s trade balance which in turn narrows the deficit on the current account which reached unacceptably high levels of around 5% of GDP earlier this year. The current account balance is an indication of the level of liquidity in the economy and is one of the indicators looked at by international investors. The bad Earlier this week Statistics SA announced that a further 15 000 jobs were lost during the first quarter of this year. The sectors most impacted were retail, hospitality, manufacturing, transport and mining. Between June 2013 and March this year the mining sector alone had shed 60 000 jobs. According to several analysts employment prospects are unlikely to improve this year due to reduced economic growth forecasts. The South African Reserve Bank has revised growth projections from 0.9% to 0.6% this year. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have also projected growth of less than one percent.

HE first race of the new PEHR Burry Stander MTB and Trail Run Sardine Festival 2016 was launched over the weekend at the Port Edward Holiday Resort. Despite the windy conditions, a cold front and intermittent rain, hundreds of cyclists and runners arrived and completed the challenging and scenic routes. Put together by Port Edward Holiday Resort, Beavercreek and Estuary Villas, the best professional mountain bikers and trail runners classed the route as one of the top three in KwaZuluNatal. On Saturday, seasoned campaigner Leeroy Emslie finished in first position winning the cash prize as well as the uniquely designed trophy, compliments of Africarve. Local legend Hayley Smith finished her race way ahead of second place, further securing her status as the best female mountain biker in the country. More than R1 000 was raised for Port Edward NSRI in a lucky draw raffle. Ed Cumming was the winner of a accommodation prize, courtesy of the Beekman Group. A highlight for the athletes

Hayley Smith, the 45km MTB winner. was the 20km downhill trail that started at Clearwater and finished at the resort. On Sunday, Michael Mzobe from South Coast Striders was victorious with a fast time while Dannon Mackenzie led the ladies race in style.
