A number of reasons to celebrate

TM

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

They also advise management about the deployment of members and the allocation of resources to address crime. “Before the statistics were released by the minister, strategies had already been implemented to reduce categories of crime that had shown an increase,” he said.

Cashintransit security guards attacked ON Wednesday 31 August at 7am, cash-in-transit security guards were travelling on the N2, in Thuvukezi area, Ezinqoleni when their vehicle was jammed by a Mazda 323 containing four occupants. KZN SAPS Media Centre spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said they, with firearms pointed at the vehicle, hit the driver’s window with a hammer while firing at the security guards. “One security guard sustained a gunshot wound to the head, the others managed to flee,” said Gwala. The suspects opened the safe, but it was empty. “One of the suspects was fatally shot and a firearm was found next to him. Charges of attempted cash-intransit robbery, attempted murder and an inquest have been opened for investigation at Ezinqoleni SAPS,” she said. Netcare 911 paramedics responded to the shooting and found that one suspect had died due to the extensive injuries he sustained. “Another man sustained lifethreatening injuries and another person was in shock,” said Netcare spokesperson Chris Botha. Paramedics treated the injured at the scene before transporting them to a Margate hospital. - Supplied.

Car guards or parking bay attendants dilemma >> ‘I don’t guard anybody’s car so why should I pay for the certification’ CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com

T

WO men, who were arrested in Ramgsate recently for operating as car guards without a security officer and businesses (SOB) certificate, feel the arrest was unlawful as they claim they’re not car guards. According to law every car guard has to be obtain the SOB certificate from the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), the

body which regulates the security industry, or else they are operating illegally. They say they are only employed to control traffic in and out of a small shopping complex and assist shoppers with packing their groceries into their car. Ernest Knickelbein and Deon Snyman say they are “volunteer parking bay attendants”. “I don’t guard anybody’s car so why should I pay for the certification,” said Knickelbein.

They don’t get a basic salary, no benefits, no contract with any company, no job description and no union to protect them so they feel there is no reason to obtain a certificate from PSIRA they say. The PSIRA Act 56/2000 states that if a person is doing the job of guarding, and is not registered, he or she is breaking the law as per Article 38(2) (c) Act of 56/2001. Car guards in particular would need a grade E qualification, which is for patrolmen or security officers.

Girl rescued from steel pipe EMERGENCY services rescued an eight-year-old girl, who was trapped in a steel pipe, in St Faiths on Tuesday afternoon. She was stuck about half way down a vertical 1,5-metre by 40cm wide steel pipe. The pipe was put there to protect a water fixture and has a narrow concrete slab surrounding it, which in turn was surrounded by knee-deep mud in places. It is unknown how the girl climbed into the pipe. KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongeni Dhlomo praised the to paramedics from the Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services, Police Search and Rescue officers, the fire department and paramedics from a private ambulance service and rescue company for their efforts. “What complicated the rescue mission was a jagged

piece of steel that was fixed horizontally about half way down in the pipe, her legs were trapped under this piece of metal and the jagged metal, which was digging into her leg, made it difficult to pull her out,” said KZN EMS spokesperson Rob McKenzie. Rescuers at first tried to remove the piece of steel that was in the pipe by unscrewing the external screws that fixated the metal piece. “This plan failed as the screws were rusted and couldn’t be unscrewed.” The rescuers then used cooking oil to make the inside of the pipe slippery. One rescuer put his hand over the jagged piece of metal while another rescuer managed to reach his hand down the pipe, behind the girl’s back and grab her shoe. They then, with her assistance, managed to manipulate her legs and untangled her out of

the pipe. The child was then carried to an awaiting KZN EMS ambulance where paramedics examined her. She was found to have sustained only minor injuries, and was in a stable condition. The girl’s mother was relieved after this ordeal, but was told the girl would need to go to hospital for a further examination and monitoring. “This type of co-operation involving Emergency Services, police and rescue teams always makes it easier to save lives. “We thank all the rescuers involved in this rescue operation,” said Dhlomo.

DA wants Emzemvelo reinstated

The course focuses on the duties of patrolmen or security officers. The Fever visited a shopping centre in Port Shepstone where two car guards said they too did not have any certification from PSIRA. “We are employed by the anchor tenants and they did not tell us we had to have any certificates. “We were just happy to get jobs so we can put food on the table,” said the guard. Siziwe Zuma, PSIRA communications officer was approached for comment on the matter, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.

THE DA has filed a petition to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, to immediately reinstate Ezemvelo as the custodian of the KZN coastline. Countless South Africans depend on the ocean either as subsistence fisherman or for jobs, which will not exist if overfishing and poaching are allowed to deplete ocean species. In a sitting of the Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee this week, the Democratic Alliance handed over a petition containing over 70 signatures from concerned

citizens and stakeholders who have taken issue with the Department’s decision to cancel Ezemvelo’s coastline protection contract. This move will effectively see poaching and overfishing take reign in the absence of competent and vigorous patrolling services. Before the cancellation of the contract, Ezemvelo was responsible for patrolling the 560km KZN coastline with approximately 80 marine conservation staff. Fisheries are now compelled to deploy and train an equivalent number of new staff, which will see some struggling fisheries close

doors due to these unexpected costs, resulting in more job losses. Ezemvelo was informed in March that its contract to monitor and patrol the provincial coastline has been cancelled with no reasons provided. These duties are supposedly being taken over by war veterans and other personnel from the Western Cape when the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries assumed responsibility on 1 August. Recently the KZN Provincial Coastal Committee, a marine advisory body for government, has urged the Department of Environ-

mental Affairs MEC to push the DAFF into reversing this decision. Ezemvelo and its predecessors have been looking after the KZN coast for decades and to remove this competency will be a disaster. “We demand that Ezemvelo continue to protect and act as guardians of the coastline and that their contract be reinstated. The DA will continue to fight for our oceans to be protected in the interests of many of South Africans who depend on the ocean economy and for the countless jobs that are at risk as a result,” said Thomas Hadebe, MP DA Shadow Minister of Environmental Affairs. - Supplied.

OT many people are aware of occupational or workplace cancer. As part of Cansa’s awareness programmes, Cansa South Coast shared a story of one of their patients. A domestic worker, under the care of Cansa Port Shepstone for lung cancer, said there is the chance she has become a victim of occupational cancer. The 40-year-old woman, who

wants to remain anonymous because keeping her job is paramount, has been working for her employers for over 10 years and they smoke in her presence. “I have worked for the family since 2002, and have tried to talk to them about the risk of smoking in my presence. I was told ‘this is our home and you can’t tell us what to do’.” The woman cannot prove she has been affected by their passive smoking, but feels it somehow contributed to the fact.

They must also be aware of their rights when it comes to working conditions.” Lisa Strydom of Cansa said there are steps that victims of occupational cancer can take. “If employees are concerned about environmental carcinogens at work, this should first be discussed with the employer or the health and safety representative at the workplace. “If appropriate safety and/or protection procedures are not in place and the employer refuses to engage in a discussion around this, employees can contact the environmental health officer at their municipality or the Department of Labour

Be cautious when using skinlightening products CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com SKIN lightening creams are becoming popular among dark-skinned Indian and black communities on the lower South Coast. Although the contents of these products are shrouded in mystery, people still buy them because they are a cheap quick fix. While some use them to treat skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, acne and scarring, others say they want to be light in complexion as they feel more attractive. What should worry those who use these creams is that the labels often state the products are made from natural ingredients. If you use any of these products, the question you should ask is, would something that is all-natural be able to deliver results that quick? Dermatologist, Marc Roscher, says the answer to that question is, quite simply, no. “You should avoid products that do not list their ingredients and

I

N a progressive step to expand on the tradition established via Africa Bike Week, stakeholders, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Ugu South Coast Tourism have announced that a new event, to be called South Coast Bike Fest, is to take place at the end of April 2017. Following the non-committal for a

further period by Harley-Davidson East Africa and Middle East the institutional partners have ensured that there is a new and enhanced motor bike event on the South Coast. This new initiative is meant to broaden the appeal for the widespread biking fraternity and that it also befits the South Coast as one of the

best tourist destinations of choice with its holiday and leisure offerings. This new South Coast Bike Fest will retain most of the fantastic activities of the past and the event precinct will remain free to bikers, bike fans and all who will be visiting the area. Divorces up, marriages down Stats SA PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com IN South Africa Marriage Week is from Thursday 1 to 7 September, a theme week to bring the value of marriage and faithfulness into focus. However, statistics indicate the divorce rate is increasing, while marriage rates are dropping. Thirty percent of unmarried women say they do not want to get married, and 70% have hope and want to get married, whether for personal and financial security, or just to have a ring on the finger. South Africa’s divorce rate is currently at its highest, this according to data released by Statistics SA, which states that the divorce rate has increased by five percent since 2012, and while the number of marriages have decreased. Divorces in 2014 21 998 - indicate an increase of 4.9% from 20 980 in 2011. A divorcee of three years, Stacey

Delport said the main reason she divorced her husband of 10 years was because they grew apart. “We got married very young and later realised we wanted different things in life, and that we had both changed.” Rethabile Ntaka (26) said marriage is just not for her. “Marriage comes with a lot of complications and commitment. If I do ever get married it would be fate, but I never dream of it.” Clinical psychologist, and marriage counsellor, Dr Cathrine Venter of Port Shepstone, said many couples get divorced because they fail to communicate with each other about serious issues. “Couples just fall in love and ignore issues of finance, family and other conflicts that do arise, which normally leads to divorce.” She said marriage is two people coming from different backgrounds,

living together and committing to one another. “Both parties should remember they are supposed to ‘become one’ and should discuss their differences so that the relationship works,” said Venter. She said going to a therapist before marriage is one way a couple can get advice before committing themselves to each other. “Professional advice is always better than getting advice from a family member as they are not always objective. A spiritual leader or a therapist always has the best advice before marriage, or in event of a divorce. She said pre-marital counselling helps deal with all the tricky questions and issues that might affect a couple, such as children, careers and the future. “As the relationship becomes deeper couples get too comfortable and start neglecting the relationship or their partners. A relationship is like a plant, it needs to be taken care of,” she said.

He also made cloth pouches that were placed in the bags, and every abuse victim that comes to the facility will receive one of the comfort bags. Although the handover marked the end of Women’s Month, Captain Moodley said that through these comfort bags, the care of women and children continues and remains a priority. - Supplied.

ELL-KNOWN South African storyteller Gcina Mhlophe is to give free storytelling workshops for Ugu District pupils soon, this in partnership with the Department of Education’s, Education Library Information and Technology Services (Elits).

Mhlophe, as guest speaker, made this commitment at the Storytelling and Heritage Festival at Uvongo Community Hall last Thursday and after watching performances said there is a lot of talent on the South Coast. “The South Coast always gives me that excitement and I am always happy to be here. There is so much talent here, but what I saw today was far from storytelling, I can call it speech

National Month of Deaf People 2016 PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com SEPTEMBER is the international month for the deaf. The purpose is to increase awareness about deaf issues, people, and culture. St Martin’s De Porres Comprehensive School has planned a number of activities and events throughout Deaf Awareness Month and encourages individuals to come together for both educational events and celebrations. It also has campaign to educate people on sign language. School audiologist Taskeen Ameer said the school

had made a video on sign language which incorporates pupils demonstrating alphabets, days of the week and basic greetings. Ameer said the video will be put on the school’s Facebook page every Monday and also shared on the South Coast Fever Facebook page. “The video will also be beneficial to families and communities who have deaf or hard of hearing members in their surroundings,” said Ameer. On Monday pupils visited the Rhema Church in Ramsgate to speak about the hard-of-hearing disability and deafness.

Hearing loss, also known as hear ing impairment, is a partial or to tal inability to hear. Some people with a hearing loss may be able to hear only some sounds and/or speech while others may not be able to hear anything. Hearing loss can affect differ ent parts of the ear, which is why there are three types of hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss is the damage to the conductive sys tem of the ear, which includes the ear canal, tympanic mem brane and ossicles. A conductive hearing loss is not always perma nent and can be corrected medi cally or by surgery. Sensorineural hearing loss is a hearing loss which affects the in ner ear (cochlea) and the audito ry nerve. This hearing loss usually can not be corrected surgically or medically, and is therefore per manent. Mixed hearing loss is a combi nation of both a conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

She said she would return to the South Coast before the end of the year to hold another workshop, the date of which is still to be confirmed. HE Virtuous Women Ministry were treated to high tea on the lawns of St Mike’s Hotel recently. It was a perfect day in celebration of the spring. The day started with games, a talk on grooming by Adelle Roger, an image consultant and teacher. About 80 women gathered to listen to the lifechanging story of Nadia Van der Merwe Kleynhans. Van der Merwe Kleynhans spoke about being an ex-model, and how that stole the joy from her. She spoke of having issues with self-esteem, relationship problems and being unhappy with life. Although mixing with people in high places and having fame through modelling for FHM and Playboy, this left her lonely. She shared how her spiritual journey with God liberated her and set her free and how her personal encounter with Jesus made a difference in her life. She is no longer modelling, but is fulfilled with her job and is happily married. The day ended with group question and answer sessions. - Supplied.

ORT Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Association of Blind Bowlers Tournament. The event was held at the Riverside Sports Club in Uvongo during the weekend of 3-4 September. Blind bowlers travelled from various parts of KZN to participate in this annual tournament. Port Shepstone Lions have been involved with the KZN NABB - National Association of Blind Bowlers - since 1981. That was the message Ugu District Man ager DD Naidoo brought across during his address at the municipality’s Women’s Month celebration last Wednesday at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre. The event was coordinated by munici

Short plays, dances, song items, karaoke and a fashion show proved that women are multitalented. It’s awards time WITH September being Tourism and Heritage Month, the South Coast has not been immune to this initiative and events around it. To begin with, the National Department of Tourism has announced the provincial finalists for the coveted Lillizela Awards. I am pleased to say that seven of our product owners or service providers have been nominated - we wish them every success to get to the national finals and bring home the silverware. Later this month, we at Ugu South Coast Tourism, will be hosting our own Tourism Awards evening during which we will be recognising the contributions made by the private and

public sectors to our tourism and leisure industry. It should be a fun evening on 23 September. The Minister of Tourism will also be coming to the South Coast to announce South Africa’s Blue Flag Beaches for the next year. This event will be attended by media and officials from all the applicant municipalities wishing to hear if their application has been successful. Currently we are the destination that has the highest number of permanently managed Blue Flag Beaches in South Africa and this is a big selling point for our prospective visitors. Also in September the KZN Depart-

ment of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs will be undertaking a South Coast based media and tourism industry focused Tourism and Heritage Month event to profile our province and our destination. Live television interviews and broadcast discussions will form part of the programme. After the event, we will be hosting about 20 influential media representatives for three days so they can profile our tourism experiences via their media houses, publications and on the internet.

These awards and events are over and above our normal leisure and cultural events programmes which will coincide with the school holidays. Who said things get quiet before the summer season rush? This is an important time for us to convince our loyal and new tourists to come here and for this reason on 23 to 25 September we with some of our members will be plugging the South Coast and environs at the Johannesburg Getaway Show which is a vital consumer show as part of our extensive promotional calendar. So with spring in our steps, we look forward to a busy month and an even busier season towards year-end.

Well done Home Affairs First you proceed to the photo booth, then wait for a consultant to see you with regard to your personal details and fingerprints. You proceed to a cashier to pay and Bob’s your uncle. About five days later, I received an SMS that my ID card was ready for collection. It really was that simple. The staff are helpful and friendly and I can say that is one of the very few government departments I have been to that practices Batho Pele principals. Well done and keep up the great work. It’s good to be South African. Port Shepstone

GOVERNMENT departments have become synonymous with long queues, incompetent staff and a general don’t-care-attitude towards customers. However, the Department of Home Affairs in Port Shepstone is a different story. Some might disagree, but I speak from my own experience. I replaced my outdated green ID book with the new Smart Card ID and was not in the office for more than 30 minutes. For this particular service, they have an automated ticket number system which tells you exactly what to do.

This is an urgent appeal to our local communities – please help us to find a suitable property. Our requirements are a large property zoned agricultural or commercial, must be in the area from Pennington to Umkomaas and a bit inland, and have a long-term lease at a reasonable rental. The property must also not be close to any human settlements. Our aim has always been to give hope to these hopeless cases and we have so many happy endings that we could write a book about them. How to find us: How to find us:

To this end, 4 Paws renders a vital service. First off all, we feed hungry animals. While doing the rounds every morning from 5am to 7.30am, we look out for sick or injured animals. These are put into the bakkie and taken to the vet for whatever treatment is needed. Most animals are returned to their owners unless they are in an abusive situation. Secondly, we sterilise animals so the puppy and kitten populations are kept to a minimum. We spay and neuter. Where puppies/kittens have been born, we endeavour to place them in foster care until they get a forever home. Thirdly, we vaccinate. We do this on an ongoing basis but occasionally we will do mass vaccinating especially for rabies. Last but not least, we give love to these animals who sadly do not get shown love and affection. We have only a few dedicated foster mothers and would really appre-

4 PAWS and a Tale Rescue is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO). Its main objective is to relieve the suffering of cats and dogs in the Scott burgh, Umkomaas, Craigieburn and Amanzimtoti areas, both urban and rural areas. Many of the animals in these areas are owned by people who are poverty-stricken. The animals are not spayed or neutered and the resultant offspring add to the general suffering. The animals are not inoculated and if they contract diseases they are left to die. Rabies has occurred on numerous occasions. This disease poses a great danger to humans as it is fatal if no vaccine is administered immediately after contact with even the saliva of the animal. The animals in so many instances are starving as they are left to scavenge for food. What a sad life it is for hungry and sick animals with no-one to care for them or their babies.

Dis ‘n feit.” Ek glo hom.

”Dis nou rugby. Kyk net hoe ontduik hy twee drie man.

Derde dominee: “Broers, ek is so bly ons bieg. My probleem is dat ek ‘n groot skinderbek is, en ek kan nie wag om ons gemeentes van jul probleme te vertel nie.”

Port Shepstone High ‘education for life’

P

ORT Shepstone High School is one of the largest co-educational, multiracial, English-medium high schools in KwaZuluNatal and we have a pupil enrolment of 1 280. The school is situated on a hill overlooking the sea and has 11 hectares of sports fields surrounding it. The school’s facilities, which are continually being upgraded, are the best in education for the region. Port Shepstone High School strives to offer an “education for life”. This is not only reflected in the academic programme, but also in the large number of extramural activities available to pupils. The sporting, cultural and community activities, arranged and supervised by the staff, ensure that pupils can explore and enhance their talents through a variety of opportunities outside the school curriculum. In the 2015 NSC final examinations, our school recorded outstanding results. Four of our matric pupils were placed in the top five in the Ugu District and we had a 98.26% pass rate. The Bachelors pass rate (university entrance) was 86%. This is a credit to the work of the professional and dedicated teachers in all subjects and grades in the school. We also acknowledge the

The Ingeli Country Show has a packed entertainment schedule make sure you are there next weekend.

H

ELD in spring each year at the Harding Country Club, the Ingeli Country Show is one of South Africa’s favourite hinterland shows. This year heralds the 14th iteration of the event and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Enjoy a weekend out in the beautiful surrounds of the Harding area while being entertained by a multi-

tude of diverse events and competitions. The programme starts on Saturday 17 September and includes a putting compo, bass compo, Zulu dancers, bell compo, drone demo, chainsaw compo, clay shooting and a children’s tug of war. There is also a live screening of the Boks versus the All Blacks, which kicks off at 9.30am.

Saturday night’s entertainment line-up starts at 6pm and runs until late. Tickets are available at the gate and are only R100. With bands Four5Seconds and Rifle performing, visitors are sure to be well entertained until late. The Miss Ingeli takes place on Sunday, 18 September from 9am to 10am. With so much on offer, including food, a beer and tea garden as well as a coffee coach to keep the hunger at bay this is most definitely one event the family should attend. “This two-day show showcases the spirit of the community and the diverse offerings of the area. “The line-up of exhibitors and entertainment promises to be entertaining, we would like to extend our congratulations to the organisers for their commitment to ensuring the success of this great annual event,” said Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO Justin Mackrory. Tickets for adults are R20 and children under 18 R10. Dubai debuts driverless minibus

It can be programmed to navigate between Dubai's main tourist attractions, including the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, Dubai Opera and the Souk al-Bahar shopping centre, the emirate's Road Transport Authority (RTA) said in a statement. The test run was "the first and very important stage in our efforts to introduce this type of vehicle into Dubai's transport network," RTA official Ahmed Bahrozyan told AFP. Mattar al-Tayer, the RTA's director general, said it aimed to have a quarter of all Dubai transport automated by 2030. HE FType SVR features the latest evolution of Jaguar’s 5.0litre super charged V8 to deliver what Jaguar said is “the ultimate in performance and driver reward”. Changes to the engine’s calibration — adopted from the FType Project 7 — deliv er power and torque ratings of 423 kW and 700 Nm. To make the most of the increased en gine output, the eightspeed Quickshift transmission gains a new calibration. To gether with the extra grip delivered by the wider, 265 and 305section front and rear tyres and optimising the torque onde mand allwheel drive system’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) control technol ogy, this delivers the FType SVR’s out standing launch behaviour and immedia

DUBAI has unveiled its first driverless bus service, launching a month-long trial period for the electric vehicle with a view to expanding it across the futuristic Gulf city state. The 10-seat vehicle made its first trip on Thursday along a 700-metre stretch of road in downtown Dubai, near to the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower. Developed jointly by French group Easy Mile and Dubai-based Omnix, the minibus is powered by an electric motor and can hit speeds of 40km/h. cy of response. The changes to IDD and refinements to the rear electronic active differential (EAD) ensure optimum torque distribu tion between the front and rear axles and across the rear axle. Combined with a unique calibration for the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) sys tem, this enhances traction and dynamics — on all surfaces and in all weathers — while preserving the FType SVR’s rear wheel drive character and handling bal ance. Selecting Dynamic mode will enable the enthusiast driver to fully explore the FType SVR’s capability, especially with

the stability control set to TracDSC or switched off completely. Under these conditions, IDD will use the most extreme calibrations for the AWD system and for the active diff to fully exploit the available grip. The gains in performance and drive ability do not come at the expense of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: com pared to the FType R, the figures on the combined cycle remain unchanged at 11,3 litres/100 km and 269 g/km respec tively. The enhancements made to the pow ertrain and driveline are matched by the modifications made to the chassis. Designed to take the SVR’s dynamic capability to the next level, and deliver ul timate chassis agility, precision, control and response, the changes nevertheless preserve the FType’s ride quality and inherent duality of character — day today useability and comfort have not been compromised. The FType’s aluminium double wishbone front and rear suspension and stateoftheart electric power assisted steering (EPAS) system gave the Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) team the best possible starting point for developing the SVR’s vehicle dynamics. That the vehicle is 25 kg lighter as stan dard than the AWD FType R — and 50 kg lighter with options including the Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake system and carbon fibre roof — brings immediate benefits in terms of handling. Optimised aerodynamics produce fur ther gains: the rear wing delivers reduc tions in lift whether in the raised or lowered position. These fundamental improvements are matched by a raft of other hardware and software changes designed to extract the full potential from every part of the chas sis. The rear antiroll bar is thicker. The valves inside the continuously variable dampers have been revised and the con trol software — the heart of Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics system — has been re calibrated. The overall effect is that both low speed comfort and highspeed control are improved.Fitted as standard with Jaguar’s Super Performance braking system fea turing large, 380 mm and 376 mm front and rear brake discs, the FType SVR can be specified with Jaguar’s Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) braking system. The wider, specially developed 265/35/ZR20 and 305/30/ZR20 tyres provide exceptional levels of grip with no detriment to ride quality or refinement. Supplied.

Business commentary DEALING with risk is a requirement in any business. CEOs are tasked with identifying likely areas of risk and coming up with risk mitigation strategies to counter them. Normal business risk relates to things like new technology, competitor activities, changes in consumer behaviour and preferences, input cost increases and changes to legislation. A dynamic risk mitigation strategy is an indication of informed proactive leadership. The question is how does one deal with significant levels of “abnormal” risk? In this context, abnormal risk relates to the current political, economic and socioeconomic situation in South Africa. Individual businesses have very little control over political power struggles and vendettas, investment rating downgrades by external agen-

cies and poor management of state owned enterprises. Faced with the very real risk of economic meltdown on a national and by extension regional scale, there is nothing that individual businesses can do but there is a lot that organised business can do. It is time that all business groupings form a united front and take on the politicians in the interests of saving the country. I am convinced that, given the potentially dire circumstances faced by their constituency, organised labour will, at least until the threat is averted, join forces with organised business and succeed in achieving a leadership change in the ruling party. COLIN PROUDFOOT

Top business stories LAST week saw the biggest investor sell-off of South African bonds and equities since “Nenegate” in December 2015. The short-lived appointment of Des Van Rooyen as Finance Minister towards the end of last year resulted in a sell-off of bonds and equities to the value of R8bn. Last week’s sell-off totalled R10.2bn and has been attributed to market uncertainties around the Hawks investigation involving the current Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan. Embattled state owned power utility, Eskom, faces new financing challenges as two major funding institutions announced that they would not offer new loans or roll over existing debt for South African state owned enterprises (SOE’s). Local and overseas funding institutions cite an

increased risk of investment status downgrade as the reason for their decisions. Eskom not only faces increased cost of borrowings, but has a $2bn (R29bn) funding gap to finance expansion and operations. Another troubled SOE, South African Airways, is still treading water pending confirmation of a R5bn guarantee facility from the SA Treasury. International routes are now under threat as foreign destinations require financial statements from all operators. SAA cannot satisfy the going concern criteria in its financials without the Treasury guarantee. Gordhan has made it clear that no guarantee will be issued until the state carrier appoints a new board of directors. - Business Reporter.

Free Kyukushin karate lessons offered PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com YOUTHS and adults are invited to join free Kyukushin karate classes at Marburg Secondary from Monday to Thursday every week. Classes start at 3.30pm until 4.30pm for children aged six to 18 and for adults from 5pm until 6.30pm. Sempai George Jaxa said the aim is to teach the youth karate and at the same time keep them off the streets and away from social ills. “The objective is to instil the true spirit of

Kyukushin because it is full contact karate,” said Jaxa. There will be a provincial tournament on 10 September, in which members will take part. Training will be at the Marburg hall if available, however, the school field will be used as an alternative. For more information, contact sempais Bongani Ntshebeshe on 083 879 2095, Philani Mbambo on 083 298 2441, Bright Khowa on 083 328 0007, Sherwin Ramdin on 083 702 4137, Jaxa on 083 702 4137 or Sensei Mandla Ngubane on 072 555 9489.
