A number of reasons to celebrate

south coast This week ONLINE www.hillcrestfever.co.za

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

ces to the Ncwane family, saying his death was a massive loss for the country as he had touched the hearts of millions. Umzumbe Municipality mayor Sizwe Ngcobo said Ncwane’s death was a shock as he knew him personally. “We have had good working relations way before he was this big brand.” In April Ncwane celebrated his birthday with his community by hosting a soccer tournament, refurbished Sbongu Jeza Primary and gave gifts to the elderly. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu was among those who expressed deep sadness, saying Ncwane was a symbol of hope to many aspiring gospel singers. “His untimely death has inflicted irreparable damage in the hearts of the people of KwaZuluNatal and the country as a whole,” said Mchunu. Ncwane leaves his wife and two sons. His funeral will be held at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Men in court for Trafalgar crimes CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com FOUR men were arrested recently for robberies and house-breakings in Trafalgar in June, July and October. Three appeared in the Ramsgate Court on Monday, the other appeared on Tuesday. The cases were postponed for seven days. André Janse van Rensburg, chairman for Trafalgar Sector Police said he followed up on information and questioned the first suspect, who admitted to a robbery. “I took him to the police station where he was formally arrested,” said Janse van Rensburg. “The forum is working hard to get rid of these criminals who want to hurt innocent people,” he said. Police spokesperson, Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed the arrests. “Margate Detectives have arrested four suspects for house breaking and robberies which occurred in Trafalgar during June, July and October,” he said. “One of the suspects, a 23-year-old man, was arrested in Trafalgar. The second suspect (33) was arrested on Margate Beach and the third suspect (23) arrested in Marina Beach,” he added. The arrests were made by Captain Devrak Gopichand and Detective Sergeant Muthal Sesiah-Naidoo of Margate SAPS.

Five killed in Hawks shootout FIVE men were killed during a shootout with Durban Hawks on the N2 freeway between Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach on Monday evening. The DPCI members were following up information on a group of armed robbers who were travelling in a vehicle from the Eastern Cape to Durban. The driver of the vehicle ignored warnings to stop instead the occupants allegedly opened fire on the members resulting in a shoot-out and a high-speed chase. Shortly after, the suspects’ vehicle came to a standstill and all the five suspects were declared dead. The five suspects have been positively linked to two cases of murder and robbery in Mpumalanga and Mariannhill in Durban. One assault rifle - AK47 - and two unlicenced 9mm pistols, several cell phones and undisclosed amount of cash were found. - Supplied.

>> Fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, among items stolen FOREIGN nationals, Robert Chambezi (26) and Patrick Simon (25), appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court last Thursday on charges of housebreaking and theft. They were remanded back into police custody until their next court appearance on 20 December. The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Yugen Moodley of the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team. The owner of a house in Richmond Road, Freeland Park, allegedly left home on Sunday 20 November evening and returned on Friday 25 November morning to find his house had been burgled. A fridge, microwave oven, dishwasher, bed, washing machine, kettle, bedding and toiletries were among the items stolen from the

f

house. Officials of Magma Security received information that the property had been removed to a businessman’s premises in Umgababa where they were stored pending the return of Chambezi, who had gone to Gauteng on personal business. Magma and members of the KZN Provincial Task Team joined forces and went up to Gauteng on Wednesday, 30 November and arrested Chambezi. The suspect was handed over to the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team members and further investigations led them, accompanied by members of the Umzinto K9 unit, to a residence in Preston Road, Park Rynie where Chambezi’s alleged accomplice, Simon, was arrested. The suspects led police to the premises in Umgababa where most

of the stolen property was found in storage. It then came to light that Simon was friends with the Umgababa businessman and hired his truck to transport the property from Freeland Park to Umgababa. The owner of the truck was led to believe that the property belonged to Chambezi, who was relocating to Stanger, and that the property was being stored temporarily until Chambezi returned from Gauteng and hired his truck again to take them to his new residence in Stanger. The recovered property was subsequently returned to the lawful owner. Chambezi had worked for him as a gardener at his Freeland Park home until he was recently dismissed. - Supplied.

Lecturer accused of not teaching

FEVER REPORTER A MAN who pays for tuition for an Esayidi TVET College student says a serious matter he reported to the institution has not received the attention it should. Vincent Bulala said he received a complaint from the student that a

Municipality apologises for water ‘inconvenience’

mathematics and engineering lecturer at Esayidi Oslo Beach campus, whose name is known to the Fever, tells students to study the book on their own and then sits on the phone until the period is over. Bulala said he investigated this and it was backed up by other students. He says he then brought the matter

to the principal’s attention, but struggled to get an undertaking that the matter will be urgently looked into. “After a number of times trying to set a meeting with the principal and being told he was not available, I was told a meeting that will include everyone involved in this matter can only sit in January,” said Bulala.

This concerned him as he says some of the complaining students might not return next year. The Fever tried to get Esayidi’s side of the story, but emails sent were not replied to and messages not responded to. The Fever also saw the trail of emails sent by Bulala to Esayidi requesting a meeting to discuss the matter.

IN the past week the community of Gamalakhe experienced water interruptions due to a burst pipe, and the municipality sent out technical staff to attend to the matter, however, the system still needs to recover. Municipal spokesperson France Zama said technicians have to ensure there is a progressive build-up of the system and therefore they need to shut down the supply every day. “Our technical teams have engaged in water balancing for the entire area of Gamalakhe by shutting off supply from the reservoir from 9pm to 5am each day. After the daily shutdowns water is only restored at around 6am each day,” said Zama. He said this arrangement will continue until the system is fully balanced. “It must be noted this process usually takes 10 days,” said Zama He said the municipality also provided water trucks during this time. Zama said the municipality apologises to customers affected by this temporary inconvenience.

UDE bathing at Mpenjati beach is prohibited until the Public Protector submits her report on the matter, which is said to be ready early next year. This comes after Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the officials of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, representatives from the Concerned Citizens Group and other stakeholders held a meeting at the site on Saturday. The Concerned Citizens Group, after engaging with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for

N

several months, wrote to the Public Protector’s office last year, expressing their concerns over the moral and ethical considerations, legal issues, environmental laws as well as socioeconomic and cultural issues. Pastor Mike Effanga, who represents the group, said he was relieved that nudity has been banned in the meantime and that the sign boards depicting the Mpenjati beach as nude friendly, have been removed. “We would like the public to know that nobody is allowed to go nude at the Mpenjati beach until the Public Protector submits her report on the matter, which we

anticipate will be early next year. “Allowing people to bathe in the nude sets the wrong precedent. It was illegal and served as a detriment to residents. It was wrong from the beginning,” he said. He said the by-law prohibiting public indecency was not relaxed and in his opinion, could not be relaxed as the Constitution prohibits such. “No other law or government action can supersede the provisions of the Constitution,” he said. Effanga added it was the responsibility of the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to let the public and

other stakeholders involved in the approval of the nudist beach, publicly know of the latest developments. “It is the responsibility of the municipality to transparently let every one know that nude bathing is no longer allowed at the Mpenjati beach pending the Public Protector’s report,” he said. Simon April, municipal spokesperson confirmed this. “The application for the nude beach has been put in abeyance waiting for the Public Protector’s determination on the matter and as a result the municipality has decided that the signs be removed,” said April.

THE Umzumbe community raised concerns about what they call “illegal sand dumping” in the Mtwalume area where construction of a new shopping centre is taking place. They say the sand blocks the way to their home as it has been left on the road. Umzumbe Municipality spokesperson Trevor Khanyile confirmed that complaints against the contractor have been raised by the community. Khanyile said the contractor is offloading the sand on the road and unconfirmed reports said he got permission from the chief of the area, Inkosi Bhekizizwe Luthuli, to do so. Luthuli was contacted for confirmation, but said there is no such thing, calling it “typical politics”. He said would never give anyone permission to block the road. “That is utter nonsense. “All I know is the sand is being

HINDUS around the world and on the South Coast are preparing for one of the most important festivals on their calendar, the Gita Jayanthi, which takes place on Saturday. Gita Jayanthi is the day on which Lord Krishna spoke Bhagavad Gita (song of God) to his disciple Arjuna. On this day, Hindus recite the 700verse Bhavagad Gita, in which Krishna explains all the essential spiritual truths: the difference between the soul and the body, the difference between the soul and the Supreme Soul (God), the science of reincarnation, the nature of time, the ultimate goal of yoga, why different kinds of religion appeal to different kinds of people, and the ultimate purpose of human life. As an important part of the scripture, it can help those who recite it go to the spiritual world and get out of the cycle of life and death. – Supplied.

‘Icing on the cake’ for garage staff

Bikers spread Christmas cheer CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com CHILDREN from Suid-Natal Primary were treated to a Christmas party at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground on Saturday. The organisers, Cimarron MC Margate Clan, with the help of businesses and other bike clubs, arranged face painting, games, a jumping castle, lunch gifts and more. Children from the community also joined in the fun. Maser Security put on a dog show before Santa handed out gifts to about 100 boys and girls. Cynthia Steyn, “First Lady” for Cimarron, said the event was a huge success. “The children had so much fun and we look forward to treating them to another party next year. “We’d like to thank all the other bike clubs who assisted, businesses and the community. We could not have done it without them,” said Steyn.

That’s a wrap IT seems like it was just the other day when it was the beginning of the year, now all of a sudden we’re planning how we are going to spend December. You know it’s December when you cannot recognise the morning grumps anymore. How many times have you seen people singing along to the music playing in their car or moving to the beat in the middle of the intersection at 7am on a regular day. It’s the most beautiful thing watching people dwell in compassion. We often hear people speak about festive cheer or the Christmas spirit and we instantly think it’s party time. It is. but not completely. This is the time of the year where you sit back and take a look at everything you have achieved. Maybe you’ve had a setback, but if you are reading this you would say you’ve

The holidays isn’t something that you could just sum up in one column, there are so many aspects to it. From that warm fuzzy feeling it brings to all that anxiety of a chapter ending. Make something of it, say it’s going to be the most amazing December and make sure it is. You can do anything. You just need a solid game plan. Life is like a football field you’re the striker, yes, you have defenders, but your opposition will still try to attack, prepare wisely and then step back and watch the spectators in the stands of your life cheer with pride. It has been a fair year so far with many lessons learnt. A positive mind is the greatest tool. And bad phases are growing pains. Remember everything good, may the beautiful memories of 2016 never fade and that’s a wrap - wishing all of you an amazing festive season.

I understand the traditional Christmas cake recipe consists of mixed fruit being soaked in brandy, but I often find myself wanting to fall off to sleep after eating a slice of my grandmother’s Christmas cake. If you think about it most of us always have exciting stories about something that had happened during the holidays. Most of December on the South Coast is beautiful and sunny so days on the beach are a must. Picnics, nature trails, swimming in the ocean, that burning sensation from being sunburned or how you listened to your younger brother and tried to roller skate now you have to deal with scraped knees and all that pain. Okay, I’m a little dramatic.

made a comeback, heck. It’s been a rough year for many, but let nothing stop you. Not everyone has a family or food every day or even a roof over their heads. Many people have started initiatives to help communities or certain groups of people. Just this week I spoke to a young girl, who was collecting money to buy sanitary towels for less fortunate girls. There are also drives that help children to collect necessary stationery so they can be educated comfortably, the Toy Story campaign for those children who have never had a toy. This is what it’s about, bringing cheer to others. Everything changes with the holidays. People start to get a little more daring with their dress code, maybe a different style, something they have never tried. I’ve heard people say it’s the silly season, so why not dye your

when one has congested holiday periods and events there is the need to ensure that all have a comfortable time and that a harmonious time is enjoyed by plenty. We thus urge our host community and visitors to strive for a sunny and safe season by being ever considerate of people and places and be respectful of our environment and our glorious beach and country landscapes. We have a number of staff at our visitor information offices working extra hours to ensure that everybody is well informed about attractions, experien-

This is pleasure in leisure time which, after a hectic 2016, is much needed by everyone, so it would be wonderful if all and sundry, local and holidaymaker can say in 2017 that their break down on the South Coast was phenomenal then there will be much for us to be proud about. Ugu District Municipality Mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mny ayiza (middle) and ath letes Phiko Maqam (left) and Liam Chetty call the Ugu community to support the Ugu team at the 2016 Salga KZNDSR Games.

In pursuit of a positive result, the Ugu Dis trict Mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza calls for the community to show their support for the games and rally behind our athletes. “On behalf of the Ugu community, I urge our athletes to put their best foot forward and remember our hope lies on your shoul ders in pursuit of moving our district forward,” says the mayor. The Salga KZNDSR games promote so cial cohesion through sport and improve the lives of the youth while providing opportuni ties of improving the state of economy in vari ous parts of the province. citizens have been targeted, whilst either strolling on the beach, or in their homes? Police members undergo training and are armed. They patrol in pairs and if they anticipate danger, can call for immediate back-up. Hence, one can conclude that the training is inferior, or that an aspiring police member is neither mentally nor physically capable/suitable to fill the position. Extensive training was provided to reservists in Johannesburg. The trainee participated in shooting practices, firing at moving targets and from a speeding vehicle. A trainee was obliged to abseil down walls of buildings, to jump from

roofs, scale walls, run up walls and complete numerous SWAT courses. In addition, many of us enrolled at Unisa for the BA Police Science Degree. During current times, numerous police members lack skills to complete the documentation. Once, after responding to a housebreak, I indicated in the docket that “a list of stolen items will be furnished later”. On reviewing the docket a few days later, I observed that the detective had inscribed, “The furniture she was also stolen”. Our notorious Interpol head, Mr Selebi (who never served any time in the police) exhorted us to remain slim, as we would not “fit into the uniform”. Now, the converse is true.

It also fed people at Caterpillar who make the trucks that haul the copper ore. It fed the truckers who hauled it from the plant to the dealer and fed the people working at the dealership and their families. But I admit I don’t know how many people it fed in total.” The e-mail went on: That’s

AS we commemorated the anni versary of this historic occasion of the arrival of indentured labourers in South Africa, we remember the years of hardship and misery the new arrivals had to endure. As they were to discover inden tureship was nothing more than a euphemism for slavery. Today you see a vibrant com munity of over 1.2 million Indian South Africans, who are an integral part of the development, progress and sociopolitical transformation

A few years ago, my elderly friend, in her eighties, was the victim of an armed robbery. Although she lives within metres of the police station, my friend and I, driving from Uvongo, responded more than 15 minutes before the police. As the keys had been stolen, I was obliged to clamber over the front, neighbouring wall, scale the dividing precast wall between the properties and eventually climb into a tree, to jump into the victim’s property. When the police arrived, they were unable to enter the property. My friend lifted the electronic gate off the rail. The police members were three times younger than me but three times heav-

the difference between capitalism and a welfare mentality. When you buy something you put money in people’s pockets and give them dignity for their skills. When you give someone something for nothing you rob them of dignity. Capitalism is freely giving your money in exchange for something of value. Socialism is taking your money against your will and shoving something down your throat that you didn’t asked for. Need more be said?

I truly believe that Indians have played a major role in fighting for the freedom we have today. I hope the erection of this mon ument in Durban to commemorate the arrival of Indian indentured la bourers brings memories of the struggle of our loving Indian broth ers and sisters will always be re membered by all. Capitalism vs a welfare state I RECEIVED the following via e-mail which puts our SA situation in a clear perspective. It should be read especially by those government officials who are dishonestly pocketing taxpayers’ money as well as those who are demanding free tertiary education (and causing untold damage to university property). It went: A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said: “I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that sports car cost.” I replied: “I’m not sure. But I do know that it fed a lot of fami-

Barely a mention is made in the media of yet another farm murder, which since 1994 to 2012 total approximately 4 000. The voluntary farm protection service, the Kommandos, was disbanded by the government. The number of whites killed during this period amounts to approximately 70 000. The Afrikaans radio station, Radio Sonder Grense, is the only media which reports the farm murders. Industrious farmers, labouring on their land, are not armed. OUR family dog, who was previously a well behaved pet, has become a nightmare since my daughter went away to study. He barks, roams, digs and chews. I am finding it difficult to control him with this new behaviour. Can you help Susan? Concerned It seems to me that your dog is suffering from a type of separation anxiety. Many dogs need consistency, routines and schedules to feel safe and happy. Disruption of this status causes increased stress hormones which result in anxiety. The roaming and barking can be due to an at-

tempt to relocate the missing person. Digging may be a displacement and self-calming behaviour. The jaws hold a lot of tension which is relieved in dogs by chewing. So this may be a selfcalming activity. I presume that your daughter and the family dog had developed a strong bond with shared activity and affection. It has been shown that the loss of a companion, human or another pet, can cause typical grieving behaviour in dogs. Research has also shown the existence of an oxytoxin loop. Oxytoxin, more commonly known as the “love hormone”, is produced in increased levels in couples in love as well as between mother and child. Withdrawal of the loved one will have the negative consequence of the cessation of the hormone resulting in typical drug-type-withdrawal symptoms. Understanding this will help you to empathise with the pet. Offering quality time by walking and playing with the dog will produce other “feel-good” hormones and reduce the need to engage in the negative activities. Offer appropriate chewing items to replace the inappropriate chewing and leave a treat-ball for self-enrichment activity. The barking will also decrease if other mental-stimulation activities are offered. Many calming natural remedies are available including Rescue remedy, Calmeze and pheromone collars. Your vet will best advise on which may be suited to your dog.

GAMALAKHE Community Health Centre held an awareness day on 2 December in the fight against women and child abuse. The day was held in Gcilima community hall and male staff from Gamalakhe CHC and other clinics, the community and SAPS members joined in a walk against the rampant abuse. CHC spokesperson Lifa Radebe said in a statement that SAPS spokesperson Captain General Mfeka and Sergeant Nomonde Moni, who deals with social crime prevention at Margate SAPS stated that at the moment they deal with many cases mostly related to women and children abuse, especially rape and assault. The 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse campaign is worldwide and opposes violence against women and children, raises awareness about the negative impact violence and abuse has on women and children and rids society of abuse permanently. “Real men don’t rape, let’s protect our teenagers from blessers, don’t become a victim and break the cycle of violence,” said Radebe. - Supplied.

Copper theft escalates in township PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com

MANY Gamalakhe homes are left with gushing water as a result in the rise in copper theft there. Thieves enter properties at night or and during the day when no one is home. Two week ago a Fever reporter saw some community members questioning two suspects about stolen copper pipes, but they denied the allegations. Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka was contacted to see if any cases had been reported. “No cases have been reported so far, however, the community is advised to report such cases to the police.” According to previous reports the thieves are stealing pipes and selling them to scrap-metal dealers. In many cases the culprits are drug addicts looking for money to buy drugs. Ugu District spokesperson France Zama said copper theft should be treated as a normal theft case and should be reported to the police. “Customers who experience such should ensure that they close off valves on the meters to prevent water from gushing out. “In the case where a customer is unable to close off the valve themselves, they are asked to contact Ugu call centre for immediate assistance,” said Zama Zama said it should be also be noted that theft of copper pipes also cripples the water supply system causing an interruption in supply. “The municipality condemns such actions and culprits of such actions must be brought before the law,” he said.

TOTAL of 75 awards were given to 32 Gamalakhe Commercial High pupils in Grade 10, 11 and

12. The pupils earned certificates and trophies for achievements in various academic learning areas, and one trophy was given to a pupil who excelled in speech, language and poetry. The awards ceremony was held at Margate Hotel last Wednesday, hosted by Iyachichima - a marketing-centric business founded by Phumelele Bohlela, daughter of late former school principal, Phillip Bohlela. “What excites us is that we are applying learnings from previous Model C schools that worked and still work well for the profile of pupils in tertiary and other institutions and in job applications. We are instilling that in township schools,” said Bohlela. She said this is a start of a lifelong journey to encourage pupils in townships to strive for success. Bohlela shared how her late father always strived for the best while serving the Department of Education for more than 30 years. Linda Sibiya formerly from Ukhozi FM was guest speaker and spoke about the importance of being educated. She also presented one of the biggest awards to Mthobisi Mbali in Grade 12 - the Dr Phillip Bohlela trophy - which will be passed to the next overall top achiever in the coming years.

A

S the festive season draws close, the highly anticipated One Way Christmas ruck is making a comeback this year. In previous years, Father Christmas has chosen varied modes of transport to visit the South Coast, from a Coca-Cola truck, a helicopter and even a fire engine. To keep up with the fun and the festive spirit, One Way Youth Outreach decided to bring Father Christmas in

an aeroplane from Margate Airport on Tuesday, 20 December. Children can then meet him and enjoy a free cupcake. Please note it will be on a firstcome-first served basis. Don’t miss out on the hype surrounding this event which will create a stir among holidaymakers and the

community. Moms and dads are asked to bring the children to enjoy the lively atmosphere, which will include Christmas music, the MC, lighting and a safely coordinated and marshalled programme. Come early to avoid disap-

pointment as every attempt will be made for each child to receive a gift. Father Christmas be visiting the following venues on: Monday, 19 December at 3pm Kwa-Nzimakwe Breama sports grounds

Smart ways to spend your annual bonus D

ON’T let the year-end festivities swallow your annual bonus. Here are four ways you can spend (read: invest) it wisely this year: • Put it into your bond With the rand’s uncertain future and interest rates that are likely to increase, it’s always a good idea to spend your extra cash on your home loan. The sooner you can pay it off, the quicker you’ll be out of debt and the more you will save in interest. In addition, pushing cash into your home loan is a good way to build a financial buffer for the odd-chance of life throwing you a curve ball. • Boost your home’s value

A home is that one asset that has the potential to grow in value over years. So give it added value by using your annual bonus for those renovations or repairs that you keep putting off or think are too expensive. Try: replacing your kitchen’s worn doors and handles, retiling your bathroom or replacing the broken shower door, giving your home a fresh lick of paint or providing your garden with a much-needed facelift. The return on investment will certainly pay off in the long run. • Save for a deposit on a home Whether you’re a homeowner or want to enter the market, being able to put down a decent amount of cash as

a deposit will certainly make you a favourable candidate when applying for a home loan. More

so, because you’ll have a sizeable amount of cash to put in, you’ll be able to take a smaller loan – just imagine the amount of money in interest that you’d save over 20 years. So, invest your annual bonus for the next couple of years into a solid savings account and, eventually, use it as a deposit towards that dream home. Now, that’s a good investment. • Upgrade your home’s energy efficiency Over the last year and a half, South Africans have certainly felt the effect of Eskom’s costly electricity increases. So, why not use your bonus to install or improve your home’s energy effi-

ciency? Think about installing solar panels, replacing all your light bulbs with energy saving lights, upgrading that old geyser with a new one that uses less electricity and even insulating your home properly for those cold winter months. Some of these might be costly, but it’ll save you plenty of money in electrical bills and will add to the resale value of your home. Estate agency donates educational items PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com KZN Rawson Property Group staff gathered at Rawson Property Hibiscus Coast House in Uvongo on Friday to cool off after a rally around the South Coast. The Rawson team then handed over educational items to NPO Phenduka Centre for Motivation and Change. Phenduka Centre was started in July in Oslo Beach and deals with community outreach, community development for women and men and educational development in rural and underdeveloped schools. Debbie Conlon, Phenduka founder, said she is grateful for the donation from Rawson, which will change the lives of the children in one of their beneficiary schools in Bizana, Eastern Cape. Johan Nieuwoudt, Rawson Properties Hibiscus Coast office manager, said it is an initiative that gives back to the community and thanked staff who contributed to the donation. After the handover a lucky draw was done where attendees submitted their business cards and winners walked away with prizes, which included a weekend away worth R5 000, zipline tickets and a boat ride. Pamella Naicker won the weekend away, Thembi Nzama won the boat ride and Erine Kleyn won the zipline tickets.

Unions unhappy with college placements PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com A FEW weeks after Nehawu addressed its grievances with Esayidi Tvet College management and the Department of Higher Education and Technology about staff placements at the college, Sadtu feels there was a misunderstanding and a communication breakdown as Nehawu shifted all the blame on Sadtu. Nehawu alleged that a college head

of unit has not been appointed at Oslo Beach campus because of the candidate not being from Sadtu, however, Sadtu has denied this and said it is not true. Sadtu site committee secretary, Athi-enkosi Mavukwana said Sadtu emailed management addressing the same issues. The email read that Sadtu is also against “illegal appointments” and that proper procedures are to be followed.

“Our standpoint as Sadtu is that the maximum allowable acting period as per the Educational Labourers Relations Council, Personal Administrative Measures and Employment of Educators Act, is 12 months, after which an opportunity should be given to others who qualify for the same post for job enrichment purpose,” said Mavukwana He said if the post remains “acting”, then an opportunity should be given to others to act.

>>precious.gumede@media24.com PUPILS of St Martins De Porres School were awarded for top achievements in 2016. Last week parents and pupils were filled with joy when the accolades were awarded. Principal Dion Davey thanked teachers and pupils for their hard work throughout the year. School spokesperson Siphelele Gumede said the principal congratulated the awarded pupils especially those from the from intellectually impaired section, who showcased their skills in designing and sewing. “The intellectually impaired pupils

modelled their own designed outfits for parents and the school and the winner of the best design was awarded. We also had a number of special awards for sports and the dux,” said Gumede. Sithembile Dlamini was awarded a karate award, Blessing Mchunu received an appreciation award, Sphindile Sikobi, the sports girl of the year award and Sphumelelo Ncayiyane the sports boy of the year ward. “After those awards the winner of the fashion show was announced and Nohlanhla Mthwane walked away with it. Sithabiso Nala took the dux award for 2016,” said Gumede.

Nohlanhla Mthwane was awarded as the best sew ing pupil in the in tellectual ly im paired section.

Tips for bike road trip safety DRIES VAN DER WALT

F

EW things can spoil a bike road trip as quickly as a breakdown. Unlike motorists, bikers have limited space available, which means carrying a comprehensive tool kit is not an option. That’s why it makes sense to put some thought into what you pack for an emergency. The first part of your emergency kit is probably already there: the tool kit that came with your bike. It will likely contain some handy tools such as a reversible screwdriver, a few Allen keys and an as-

sortment of spanners to fit most nuts and bolts on your bike. It has limitations, though — most bike tool kits do not include a pair of pliers, which can come in handy in a breakdown. A great space-saving supplement for your tool kit is a multitool, especially one that contains pliers. Look for a multi-tool that also contains a saw blade, a file, and of course, a knife blade. Perhaps the most likely breakdown is a flat tyre. Carry a tyre-repair kit that contains the plugging tools, mushroom plug strips and solution. Once the tyre is repaired, you’ll need to inflate it, so make

sure that you have some compressed air cannisters as well an adapter to connect the canister to your tyre’s valve. One of these canisters is usually sufficient to inflate your tyre enough to get you to the nearest filling station, where you can inflate the tyre to its normal pressure. Mechanical emergencies aren’t the only problem you could face on your road trip — there is always the risk of a medical emergency, anything from injuries to getting stung by a bee. You could either buy a bike-specific first-aid kit from an accessory stop or compile your own. — Wheels24.

THE post office urges KwaZulu-Natal motorists to check their car licences prior to going on holiday. Many motorists may not be aware that their car licence has expired or will expire while on holiday and may get a traffic fine for the infringement. There are currently 31 post office branches in KZN where vehicle owners may renew their vehicle licence. By law, vehicle licence renewal must be done in the province where the vehicle is registered and can thus not be

done while on holiday in another province. Geert Bataille, head of the SA Post Office’s retail division, says motorists must remember to take proof of residence and an identity document along when renewing a car licence. This is a legal requirement. Should motorists not have received a renewal notice, the renewal form (ALV) may be downloaded from www.enatis.com During the 2015/2016 financial year, more than 3,7 million motor vehicle licences were renewed at SA Post Office branches. Motorists who have received a traffic fine issued in terms of the AARTO Act (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences) may pay the traffic fine at any post office countrywide. - Supplied. New Indica adds lots more value T

ATA has introduced an additional, limited-edition variant of its Indica hatch as an added-value offering. The new model, known as the Indica Flash, is based on the Indica LGi model, with several distinguishing features and significant additions to the list of standard equipment. The Flash is now specified well above the standard specification of its main competitors in the market. At R124 995, it is only R6 000 higher than the standard Indica. “We are confident that the Indica Flash special edition is going to be a success as it is a true value-for-money offering aimed at first-time buyers and those with a limited budget,” said Kyri Michael, the CEO of Accordian Investments which markets and distributes Tata passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in SA. People will be able to identify the model with its bold black stripes, incorporating the Flash logo, running along the bottom of the doors. The steel wheels have also been replaced with spoked alloy mag wheels.

However, the scope of the big upgrade comes once one sits inside the Indica Flash. Firstly, there are leather seats with the Flash logo appearing on the top of the front seats, while the steering wheel has a soft leather grip. An audio system with USB and handsfree Bluetooth capabilities has also been added. The Indica Flash is powered by a 1,4-litre engine which delivers 56 kW and drives the front wheels through a five-speed gearbox. Claimed overall fuel consumption is 6,5 litres/100km. It has a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a two-year/45 000 km service plan plus roadside assistance. — Supplied.

ESEARCH has revealed that around 15% of boys and eight percent of girls said they’d had their first drink before the age of 13. These figures are a timely reminder as calendars wind down to the end of the year and teenagers’ social diaries fill up with end-of-school parties, or matric after-parties or parties hosted

by various people, and it is not uncommon for alcohol to be consumed by teenagers at these gatherings. Research from the 2012 University of South Africa (Unisa) Youth Research Unit Substance Abuse Survey, shows that a significant number of teenagers in the average South African home have at some stage experimented with

alcohol, but the vast majority of parents believe their children do not drink. South African Breweries runs You Decide, an interactive underage drinking roadshow, which educates teenagers about the dangers of consuming alcohol, equip them with techniques on how to avoid peer pressure

The company has compiled a checklist for party safety, whether the party is one that an adult or a teenager is hosting, or a party that a teenager will be attending. If your child is going to a party • Contact the parents holding the party and check on the facts concerning the event. • Talk to your children about your expectations and the consequences of them not living up to them. • Do not give your children large amounts of cash. • Make it clear that they cannot leave the party and go to another without getting your permission. • You, or a trusted parent, should pick them up at the agreed time, but they should also know that they can phone you at any stage if they want or need to leave.

BOUT 50 cyclists and walkers took part in the CANSA Active Family Cycle event at the Burry Stander Bike Park on Sunday. The event was fun for the family and after the walk and cycle, supporters relaxed at the coffee shop at the park while lucky draw prizes were handed out. Mandie Stander said she delighted to support the event and was pleased to see everyone come out to the park and support CANSA. “Everyone has been affected by cancer in some way and we must all do our bit to help CANSA fund-raise so that they are able to conduct screenings and research,” said Stander. “The Burry Stander Bike Park supports CANSA in promoting and leading healthy lifestyles. Some cycle, some walk, some jog. We all have to do something to stay fit and healthy,” she added.

Ngcobo said as a municipality they are not paying lip service to sports, they are on the ground supporting sportsmen and women. “Cele said he fought four difficult fights that put him in the number one spot,” said Khanyile. He added that Cele fought in the under 70kg category in the Kyokushinkai karate. “This was a very tight knockout competition, if you lose a fight you are out, so I had to work very hard to be number one,” said Cele. Khanyile said Cele said karate is not a financially sound sport, but he enjoys it. “He said he won a trophy and gold medal and added that karate does not encourage people to do things for money,” said Khanyile.” “Cele’s win has also qualified him to compete in Japan in April 2017. He said he is looking forward to competing and will do his best there,” said Khanyile. - Supplied.

HEY eat, drink, they’re always merry and they also have a talent for a sport that they feel is not recognised enough. A number of men and four women from different darts clubs, which fall under the Hibiscus Coast Darts Association banner, showed what they were made of at a prize-giving evening. These people sure know how to play darts and their passion for the sport was evident at the association’s annual banquet at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Saturday. “We have challenges in developing darts ... some believe that darts is associated with the overconsumption of alcohol, but that is not true as many of our players don’t drink alcohol,” said chairman Theron Mthelelo. He said the stigma had to be broken and that the association will continue to work hard towards getting darts more recognised. Mthelelo proudly spoke about the hard work all clubs had put into 2016 and mentioned highlights where members competed in regional games and at Darts South Africa. “In 2016, we managed to secure five leagues. We thank and appreciate all the new sponsors that have come on board,” he said. He said the association’s goal is to promote darts in all municipalities that fall under the Ugu District. “We can do that if we work hand in hand, whether sports and recreation [department of] helps us or not,” he said.
