ORT Shepstone SAPS have received a number of missing people reports over the past couple of months, including two who were reported missing last year. Families of the missing people have asked police to issue information to the public to help in their endeavour to find them. Police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid said they have had many young and old people reported missing, however, only five people have not been found. “In a lot of the cases the missing person visits friends or goes partying without informing relatives and then returns or phones home after a day or two,” she said Wiid said its very rare that people are not found. Louis Mkhanyiseli Shusha (28) left his residence in Newtown Murchison to come to Port Shepstone CBD on 3 December, 2015. Shusha was last seen near Port Shepstone KFC, wearing black jeans and a long-sleeved, striped jersey. Shusha can be identified by a heart tattoo on his left hand, and his top teeth overlap. Shusha has mental problems.

THE last thing a 27-year-old Umzumbe man expected while shopping at a home supply store was to get assaulted and thrown out. Zamokwakhe Maphumulo purchased building supplies from a Marburg hardware store last Thursday and asked the store to notify him before the R13 224 delivery was due to be made.
“I wanted the builder to be present when the delivery was made so he could check that the goods were what he required, but nobody called me, and the wrong length of timber was sent,” said Maphumulo. He then returned to the store the next day - Friday - to rectify the problem but, he claimed, staff were not helpful. “I told the salesman I would like the correct measurement and that
I would pay in any outstanding money if I had to,” he said. The owner then appeared and Maphumulo told him he had received bad customer service from the staff. “He punched me in the stomach and grabbed me by my collar and pushed me towards the entrance. He told me I was wasting his time as he was on his way to mosque,” said Maphumulo. “I was shocked at the way I was
Louis Mkhanyiseli Shusha of Murchi son went missing on 3 December, 2015 spent on searching for them. It is the duty of the police to inquire at mortuaries or hospitals when a person is reported missing. “A missing person report is immediately circulated to surrounding stations and the media once a report has been opened,” she said. Wiid said in the case of teenagers, it is not unusual for them to leave home without informing parents, either to be with their girlfriend and boyfriend. She said parents should be responsible for their family and care for those who have a history of mental illness. “Families should ensure that there is a responsible person with a child or elderly person when they leave home or when they are alone at home. “They should also tell their family not to trust unfamiliar people, even if they promise them a job or money,” she said. I also asked for a refund.” However, Maphumulo only received R12 224 as R1 000 was retained by the business for labour and handling charges. “They told me to sign a document accepting this agreement or else I would not get any of my money back. I was desperate so I signed the document,” said Maphumulo. Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid confirmed that an assault case is being investigated. “Nobody has been charged,” she said.

OLICE are investigating an attempted murder case after gunshots were fired on the home of an ANC public relations candidate for the upcoming local government elections in Umzinto. The incident occurred on Saturday at about 8pm when Skhumbuzo Ngwane (43), and his wife and five-year-old daughter, were enjoying a relaxed evening at home. Nobody was seriously hurt, but the toddler sustained minor injuries from flying-glass shrapnel. “I was in the lounge at first, but then went to my bedroom to watch soccer … my wife asked me to park the vehicles in the garage, but I asked her to do it instead. I usually do … the next thing we heard gunshots,” he said. The shooters aimed at the chair in which Ngwane usually sits. His wife was still outside at the time and he was in his bedroom.

Pensioners in R800 000 arrears A NUMBER of tenants, who occupy pensioner flats on Hibiscus Drive in Marburg, are in arrears for rent and electricity to the tune of R800 000. The amount has accumulated over five years. Community members called the ANC Lower South Coast region for a meeting regarding the arrears situation on Thursday where it was established while not all tenants have defaulted, the electricity supply to these flats has been disconnected. The flats are managed by the Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) and consists of six blocks. Each block has six flats, however, it is not only pensioners who live in them, but their children too. In some cases, the pensioner has died and the children continue living in the flats. Selvan Chetty, who was at the meeting said the Ward 17 ANC leadership established that the collective arrears debt was considerable with some residents owing in excess of R55 000. “The ANC representives in the ward and I have tabled a proposal to the municipality for their urgent attention,” said Chetty. The proposal states: • The arrears rental be separated from the electricity bill. • The defaulting residents be allowed to structure a repayment plan for electricity with HCM. • That HCM consider prepaid meters for all units in those flats. • That the ANC-led municipality consider writing off all arrear rentals • That the ANC proposes the transfer of these units to qualifying residents for free. “We note that only an ANC majority vote in council will enable us to achieve this. “We commit ourselves as the regional leaders of the ANC to engage with the municipality on behalf of the affected residents,” he said. Spokesperson for HCM, Simon April said as a responsible government they have to collect all debt owed to the municipality and undertake the necessary steps to be followed in this regard. “These necessary steps include engaging with those who owe the municipality and finding a way forward that can suite both the municipality and the debtor,” said April. He said the municipality always provides for indigent communities, however, it remains their responsibility to come forward to the municipality for them to benefit from this, and if they do not the municipality will not automatically do so regarding people who do not pay as indigent. “On the issue of transferring ownership of these flats, I can indicate that in her budget speech, on 31 May, the mayor of Hibiscus Coast, Nomusa Mqwebu, indicated that the municipality will engage on the matter and she is confident that these engagements will bear positive results for the residents of these flats.”

HE debtors book of Ugu District Council stands at R290 million, and some consumers do not pay for municipal water. This comes from councillor Dave Snashall who said in a letter to the Fever, that nobody knows how many water meters are connected to the system. Neither does anybody know how often the meters are read. No one can say how many estimates are made every month, and consumers billed accordingly. Furthermore, two employees have claimed exorbitant amounts for overtime and travel, which Snashall says is physically impossible for a person to work

MajorGeneral Sethenya Nxam agele has been promoted to Ugu Cluster Commander within SAPS.
SHE is passionate about fighting crime and one of her main targets will be eradicating drug trafficking and prostitution. Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele was promoted to her new rank on 1 June and is now the new cluster commander for the Ugu policing cluster. She will be overseeing 17 policing stations and a number of specialised units in the area. Nxamagele took up the post of station commander of Port Shepstone in April 2010 and the station has since been awarded by the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, twice as Best Police Station, Best Crime Prevention and
Best TRT. She believes that without the commitment and dedication of her members this could never have been achieved and thanks them for their hard work during the past six years. “The co-operation and willingness from the community to assist the police is just as important. I have the highest regard to the community in my policing area for their dedication,” she said. She praised them for joining in the fight against crime, especially the business fraternity who engaged in community orientated projects such as homeless children and to assist those in need. Nxamagele will especially knock on the doors of other governmental departments to, with SAPS, come up with a strategy to alleviate drug abuse and prostitution. “I will be concentrating, together with the relevant stakeholders to address the issue of vacant premises which have become a haven for drug lords and prostitutes and which contributes to crime,” she said. plus five hours overtime totalling 13 hours a day for a whole month. This is inordinately stressful, inhuman, dangerous and illegal,” said Snashall. There was also a travel claim for R13 626 in April for 2605 kilometres and another for R9 757 for 3078 kilometres. These top-end claims suggest daily travel at 113 to 137 kilometres a day. “What sort of job demands this?” he asked. In response to this, Ugu spokesperson, France Zama, said a supervisor will put in a request for overtime if a job can’t be complete during normal working hours. This is pre-authourised and Zama says “the process that is being used to claim overtime enables the municipality to ensure that employees do not abuse overtime”.

that amount of hours in a single month. One of the officials, who earned R25 000 a month, was paid R76 000 in overtime over a period of six months. This works out at R12 600 a month in extra income from overtime. In April alone, an official was paid R30 000 in overtime for working 140 overtime hours in a single month. His basic salary is R20 000 a month, so in April his total income from Ugu was R50 000. To place this in some sort of perspective, and rounding off a month to 28 days for ease of comparison, he worked his normal 160 hours of straight time, which is eight hours a day for a five-day week. His overtime amounts to an additional 140 hours for the month. His workday is thus eight hours normal time,

Last Wednesday the staff, their union Saccawu and the employer met to discuss working conditions and came to an agreement that the staff return to work and all issues would be resolved by the union. Shop steward, Teddy Truddy Mzobe said all is well and they are happy with the agreement reached. Mzobe said she would like to correct what was said in the last report, which said they were forced to return to work. “We were never forced to return to work. As employees we were tired of striking and being at home for over three weeks so we decided to meet with our employer and our new union, Saccawu, and come to a mutual understanding that if we continue to strike our jobs would be at stake,” said Mzobe. Mzobe said they joined Saccawu because it showed an interest in resolving employees’ grievances. She said employees agreed to cancel their membership with Ucimishawu and join a union that places their interest first. EW Louisiana Primary School principal Thabani Memela, formerly the deputy principal, said he has big plans for the school. Memela said since his appointment he has seen the school grow from 500 pupils to just over 700 and feels that for a school to achieve a good performance, it has to have an energetic leader. “I am an energetic person and feel that my school is growing academically. I have big plans for it.” Memels’s short-term goal is for his pupils to be computer literate and for many of them to pursue a career in engineering as he strives to make maths one of the priority subjects. He said his qualifications will lead the school to greater levels. “I am a qualified teacher with a senior-primary teacher’s diploma, a diploma in education specialising in maths, a Bachelor of Education (BeD), honours in leadership, specialising in maths and science and a Masters of Education in Curriculum Studies. I feel my qualifications put me in the position to take the school to a better level,” he said. Memela said although the school is a low-fees school it needs sponsors and support with infrastructure as the school is growing and asks businesses to assist Louisiana Primary where they can.

ORT Shepstone SAPS held a crime awareness campaign at the CBD taxi rank last Thursday. The campaign was part of the build-up to the KZN Polmusca competition, which will took place on Saturday at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre. Prior to the event, Port Shepstone police conducted an operation in the CBD and beachfront, during which several people were arrested for
counterfeit goods, drugs, dangerous weapons and loitering for the purpose of prostitution. Different units took part in the blitz operation. Following the operation, the provincial SAPS Dance Band from Durban entertained the community at the taxi rank. “We want to engage the public through music to take a stand against crime, especially the selling and distributing of drugs in our communities,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. FTER months of planning and hosting fund-raisers for a trip to Poland, St Martins De Porres School pupils and staff members had a busy Thursday 2 June morning packing suitcases and getting ready for their new adventure. Finally, on Thursday afternoon the five pupils and four staff members left for King Shaka Airport to board their flight, which arrived in Poland on Friday 3 June. The pupils took part in the International Smiling Child Festival in Poland and will be there for two weeks. The festival is held with the purpose of gathering disabled and not disabled children together, and giving them the opportunity to showcase their artistic and cultural activities. Teacher Sphelele Gumede said they were
very excited, although a bit nervous about the long time on the plane. “We were very excited, but at the same time very nervous. We waited a long time for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Gumede. She said the festival builds pupils’ morale as they are to perform with more than 30 countries in singing and drama. Pupil Kwanele Zondo said he was very happy. “I am so happy. Before this I had never been on a plane and I am not even homesick. I just want to have fun.” Slindile Mhlangu, mother of pupil Andile Mhlangu, said she was excited that her child had gone overseas, but as a parent she was at first, a bit sceptical because of the long hours in the air. “I was so excited that my boy went to Poland. As a parent it is normal to have that little worry, but as long as the teachers are with them they are safe and will return safely.”

Check what you’re being charged at tills WE had an experience recently, which compels me to warn fellow shoppers to check the small print of the advertisements placed by businesses. We had failed to read the clause on the advert that states “cash on ly”. On Saturday, we bought some things and, because it was getting late, didn’t check the prices charged at the till. I paid via credit card. Last night, we checked the slip and found that on a number of items we were overcharged. I went back to the store to query
it and was told that because I paid via credit card, the system auto matically charged at the “normal” prices instead of the “special” pri ces. They pointed out that this it is stated on their advertisement, which we had not seen or read. Some of the items were highly overcharged advertised at R25 but charged R42. Now, while I can accept that we didn’t read this clause in their advert, is what they are doing ethical, because at the time we don’t know what the “nor mal” price was, only the advertised price.
Specials
To take my argument further, they can advertise something at R5, but charge you R100 because you don’t know the “normal” price at the time of buying it. Another reason to always check the prices being charged is that very often the price on the shelf doesn’t correspond to the price scanned when the item is charged at the till. A further thought that comes to mind, is it not against Banking Leg islation in SA to charge a higher price for items, when using a debit or credit card? Iqbal

Nursery school teacher’s ‘other life’ is scary I WENT with a friend of mine to fetch her little one at a nursery school in Shelly Beach. When I saw the child’s teacher and carer I went ice cold. The lady helping the child looked very familiar and I instantly remembered where I had seen her before. Some things you never forget. I went to the hairdresser in Manaba a few months ago and on the pavement was a lady – drunk, drugged, what does it matter? She was out of her mind, falling around, shouting and screaming. A security guard tried to calm her down, tried to be nice, but eventually had to use brutal force to get her on her way. I was told that her girlfriend worked nearby and that this was common behaviour. On a second occasion, I saw the same woman sitting on the pavement with some men, smok-
should not make a simplistic conclusion that I am an advocate for censorship. As a society we cannot create space that allows for the prejudice and intolerance of Peltz to flourish unrestrained. ing something which did not look or smell like a cigarette. I remembered her face from the previous encounter, but the main attraction to this group on the pavement was the fact that the woman was only wearing a see-through nightdress having the time of her life. Being shocked, I told a friend who lived nearby. She said that drugs were playing a major role in the area and that fighting occurs regularly. And there she was again … a little boy’s teacher. How is this possible? Should one not do a background check on who takes care of your child during the day? It is scary, very scary. Anonymous

This Bill talks to fair compensation for expropriation. But even before that is done Peltz is advised to scrutinise the 1913 Land Act - a piece of legislation that dispossessed the indigenous people of South Africa and placed the land in hands of what is popularly termed “Colonialists”. Therefore it will be unconscionable for a government not to engage in a programme of restitution. Dr. Peltz must realise that her ideological expressions create fertile nurseries for radi-

To conclude that our children are unable to “engage in abstract thinking”, are “abysmally ignorant” and hence “utterly stupid” is unforgiveable. It would serve well to remind this individual that South Africa’s children have joined the highest echelons of academic achievement and that our children are still in great demand worldwide. How to find us:
A CAUSTIC toned correspondence from graduate critic, Dr Peltz, (Wanton destruction appalling, 2 June), with all its innuendoes, insensitivities and downright dishonesty has to be countered with a proportional response. I hasten to initiate this response with a note of agreement on her views on the destruction of educational institutions. No sane individual can justifiably condone such outrageous acts. The burning of schools at Vuwani will remain a lamentable moment in our educational annals. Notwithstanding this event, I personally find it an abomination for an individual - a so called academic - to

“MY lewe, kanse, tyd en geld, is nutteloos verspeel.” Is daar ‘n pad terug?

ens. Skielik het meisie gesê: “Ek sal my pappa bel en wag totdat hy my kom uitkry.”

Business Youth unemployment a time bomb BUSINESS REPORTER
R
EPORTS covering communication between the Office of the President and the youth are encouraging. Problems are not solved by talking about groups of affected people - problems are solved by talking to groups of affected people.
From a socioeconomic viewpoint, there is no demographic group on the Hibiscus Coast more affected by unemployment and lack of economic opportunity than the youth. Youth unemployment in this area stands at 37% and around half of those lucky enough to have a job earn less than R2 000 a month.
Economic update South Africa’s budget deficit narrows
BUSINESS REPORTER FIGURES released by Treasury indicate a budget deficit of R29 billion for April compared to a deficit of R41 billion in April. The budget deficit represents the excess of government expenditure over government income during a given period. The narrowing of the April year on year deficit is timely but may not be sufficient to positively impact pending ratings agency decisions. Cumulative budget deficits reflect in national debt which, according to most estimates, is sitting at around 50% of the GDP. High levels of national debt impact the value of the Rand which
Recent publications addressing the reasons that protestors turn to violence highlighted ‘intense anger born out of huge frustration’ as the primary cause. We have a group of people in this area that have a right to feel frustrated because nobody is talking to them. The establishment of a non-politi-
in turn makes national borrowings more expensive. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the fourth quarter of 2015 was revised downwards to 0.4%. GDP is an indicator of economic growth which in turn has a direct impact on the creation of employment. Current growth figures are substantially below the national target of 5% leading to pessimism in many circles about the ability of the country to create jobs. Producer price inflation (PPI) eased marginally to seven percent in April from 7.1% the month before. PPI measures price increases “at the factory gate”. This remains below market expectations of 7.3% but the full impact of the drought and the weak rand are yet to be fully factored in. Inflation rates are the primary driver of interest rates, but expectations are that the SA Reserve Bank will maintain rates in the short term.

cal “youth and/or business forum” in this area is the solution. Such a forum should be sponsored by the business sector and have as a founding objective “constructive dialogue between business and the youth to map out a way forward to address the issue of economic opportunity for the youth”. Inclusion in a positive and con-
structive process will go a long way to reducing levels of frustration because anger is replaced by a vision and hope for the future. It’s time that organised business took the lead and engaged with the section of the community that is bearing the brunt of lack of opportunity on the Hibiscus Coast.

Donkey Derby held in aid of Cansa PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com
M
ARGATE Masonic Lodge held its 17th Donkey Derby in aid of Cansa South Coast recently at the Bethanien Lutheran Church in
Izotsha. The theme was Far East and many dressed in Eastern attire for the event. Cansa volunteer Diane Saunders and Graham Hack of Margate Masonic Lodge said 130 tickets were sold, making it a successful fund-raiser.
9 June 2016
Saunders said this year’s event attracted 80 sponsors and thanked them for their support. “This year’s event was a huge success with a lot of sponsors who made it possible. Sponsors donated over 300 vouchers,” she said.
Saunders explained how the derby works and how the pay-out works. “At the beginning of each race, a donkey is auctioned with ownership of the donkey going to the highest bidder. The tote is opened and bets are placed on the colour of the donkey that one thinks will win. “Once all the bets are placed the tote is closed and the jockeys line up in their respective lanes. The race is run using two dices - one with colours and the other with numbers - the jockeys then move when their colour is chosen and take steps according to the number thrown on the dice,” she said.

The winner of the first race was Paparazzi (green), who won R1 050. Saunders said with the pay outs 65% of the total auction income went to the owner of the donkey and the remaining 35% of the auction and bet income is tallied and goes to Cansa. Waitresses and waiters at the event were volunteers, and included Creston College pupils, who did their community service hours.

As the instrument cluster, this wide screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver as well as a central display above the centre con sole. The driver can choose between three different styles to select their pre ferred look for the widescreen instru ment cluster: “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”. As the entire cockpit is fully digital, the driver is free to config ure the information and views of rele vance for them and thus create their own personal cockpit.
In a first for a car, the steering wheel features touchsensitive Touch Con trols. Like a smartphone interface, they respond precisely to horizontal and ver tical swiping movements, allowing the driver to control the entire infotainment system using finger swipes without hav ing to take their hands off the steering wheel. In keeping with the motto “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road“, this allows minimum driver distraction to be achieved. All engines for the new EClass are equipped with the ECO start/stop func tion. The petrol engines meet the re quirements of the EU 6 emissions stan dard, while the new OM 654 fourcylin der diesel engine is already configured with future RDE limits in mind. The new fourcylinder diesel unit marks the birth of a new MercedesBenz engine family and opensup new di mensions in efficiency. What’s more, it is shorter and more compact than its predecessor thanks to reduced cylinder spacing (90 mm instead of 94 mm). Despite having a lower displace ment than its predecessor, reduced to just under two litres, the new diesel power plant has an output of 143 kW and, when installed in the E 220 d, deliv ers an NEDC combined consumption from 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres, which equates to CO2 emissions from 112 grams per kilometre – a figure that until now only significantly smaller vehicles have been able to deliver. Furthermore, the fourcylinder en gine with singlestage turbocharging and variable turbine geometry is excep tionally refined. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of alumini um. The MercedesBenzdeveloped Nanoslide® surface coating efficiently reduces the friction between cylinder surface and steel piston. Nextgeneration driving assistance systems In addition to slowermoving, stop ping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing the danger zone ahead of the vehicle. Likewise in cluded as standard are attention assist with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, and Crosswind Assist, which can assist the driver by substan tially reducing the effects of strong crosswinds to prevent the vehicle from drifting too far off track. An allnew infotainment generation is making its debut in the EClass equipped with Comand Online. Its high lights, alongside the double display, in clude the touchsensitive Touch Con trols on the steering wheel and the new, intelligent graphic design of the Multi function Telephony. The new EClass is available from R707100 (E 200). The E 220 d is availa ble at R759 100 and the E 350 d R946 300. All three models are available in showrooms as of June 2016. Supplied.

HE new Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine is now available in South Africa. The flagship of the local XC90 range, the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine brings Volvo Cars’ new electrification strategy to South African roads for the first time. “With the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine we are rewriting what is possible for plug-in hybrid vehicles,” says Volvo Car South Africa Managing Director, Greg Maruszewski. “Combining electric power and our turbo- and supercharged Drive-E powertrain with ultimate seven-seat SUV practicality and comfort, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine exudes class, sophistication and Swedish luxury while providing incomparable levels of fuel economy and ultra-low carbon emissions. Built on our Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, its full seven-seat configuration has been retained with no real impact on passenger or luggage space, while the power available from its petrol and electric engines bestows it with exceptional performance and efficiency.” With its two engines, total power output is 300 kW, with 640 Nm of torque on hand – yet average combined-cycle fuel economy is as low as 2.1-litres per 100 km. Carbon emissions are just 49 g/km. Senior vice-president of research and development at Volvo Car Group, Dr Peter Mertens, says: “There are no compromises when you drive the allnew XC90 T8 Twin Engine – in the past you could either have power or low emissions. But with the all-new XC90 T8 Twin Engine you can have both. “We have been working hard to earn our competitive edge and to give our customers the ultimate combination of performance and low fuel consumption. Our Twin Engine technology has enabled us to build on our heritage of ef-

Thanks to SPA and our world-class four-cylinder engines, we have a clear and leading position.” The all-wheel drive XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is, as its name suggests, powered by two engines. A conventional internal combustion setup is employed up front, with the award-winning 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo- and supercharged Volvo Drive-E petrol engine powering the front wheels, providing 235 kW and 400 Nm via Volvo’s 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox. Exclusively available in the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, a specialised instrument readout relays information pertaining to battery level, power usage, and the
Ensure your vehicle is safe AS they say, prevention is better than cure. To prevent unnecessary breakdown and repair costs, it is essential to do a routine maintenance check on your vehicle. • Carrying an emergency kit is essential. Emergency equipment includes, an upto date map, cellphone, spare tyre and emer gency tools such as a torch, screwdrivers, pli ers and an adjustable spanner. Red alert: carry a reflective warning trian gle in case of breakdown. • Check the fluids in your car. The oil, cool ant, brake fluid and windscreen wash levels are the obvious ones. Red alert: the levels for the clutch fluid and power steering fluid is often overlooked, and can lead to accidents.
• Check the tyre air pressure. The correct pressure is normally printed in the owner’s manual or a sticker on the body where the driver’s door shuts. The maximum pressure is marked on the side of the tyre and should not be exceeded. Red alert: don't forget to check your spare tyre pressure and make sure you have a jack and the correct tools to change a tyre, some tyres require a special spanner for lock nuts, which is not always mentioned when you upgrade your tyres. • Check your tyre wear by using a coin or a tread gauge. Ensure you have at least 1/16th" or 1.6mm tread left. Red alert: tyres heat up on long trips, which can cause blowouts on worn out tires.
balance between electric and petrol power. A battery charge indicator lies alongside the traditional fuel gauge, with electric range on display as well. Then, a classy power gauge replaces the conventional rev counter, showing current power usage for both the electric and petrol engines, the ‘changeover point’ at which the petrol engine will be activated, and the current drive mode. In Power, AWD and Off-road modes, this dial is converted into a rev counter. As with all other Volvo models, the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine is available as standard with a 5-year/ 100 000 km warranty, a full 5-year/ 100 000 km Volvo Plan, Tracker Connect and laminated glass for added security. - Supplied.
• If you have not done a recent service and an oil change, doing so before a long trip is recommended. Red alert: when changing your car's oil al ways replace the oil filter at the same time. • Check your car's air filter. Clean air to your engine improves the vehicles performance and efficiency. Red alert: remember to change the cabin (pollen) filter. These are often ignored in services and if worn adversely affect the quality of air in the cabin. • To ensure high visibility, make sure the windows are clean. Red alert: defective windscreen wipers should be replaced. • All lights and signals should be in work ing order. Red alert: take along spare bulbs for headlights, indicators, tail lights, reverse lights. Supplied.

Coowning a motorhome is the cheapest way to enjoy a family holiday, but are South Africans ready to follow Australia and England in forming syndicates?

ERT Loontjens has more than 50 years experience managing hotels, lodges and B&Bs in several countries, but one thing he does not understand is South Africans’ love affair with time-sharing. “I can tell you nowhere else on Earth offers as much to see as South Africa, so why would you want to go to the same place year after year?” he asked Wheels. Instead, Loontjens advises people to invest in a motorhome, “Look, I am Dutch and whatever you can think of doing in or with a motor home, we Dutch have done it. So I can tell you the big problem with sharing a vehicle is maintenance and insurance. You have to dedicate one of the members to manage these responsibilities, as well as the bookings and even rentals of the syndicate’s motorhome. “With these ground rules established, you only have lovely holidays waiting to happen. Loontjens points out that syndication of motorhomes is popular in Australia, and for long boats in England. “The business practices are well established. Each member of the syndicate owns a share of the motor home, which of course means each member shares in the cost of ownership, or receives a share of the funds when the motor home is rented out of sold. He said there are several types of syndication. “Fifty two people can buy into the scheme for one week a year, which they can bank or trade, there are schemes that allow members to buy into to syndicate for a fixed period, typically four years - this is popular in Australia or three families may agree to share the costs of a motorhome, with the right to sell their share to approved families when they want out.” Whatever type of syndication one chooses, it remains the smartest way to enjoy an impulsive weekend away or cheap holidays throughout South Africa.

PEDESTRIANS constitute more than a third of all road fatalities in South Africa, especially at peak times. Unfortunately, many pedestrians don’t always follow the rules of the road, and the results are often catastrophic. In January, Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters said that up to 35% of all fatalities on the roads during the December 2015 festive period were pedestrians. “Road safety needs to begin at a young age, and it needs to include education on how to be a safer pedestrian,” the Automobile Association said. The AA said although it is illegal to walk on national highways (except under certain conditions such as when your car has broken down), enforcement of this law is poor, leading to risks and danger. Tips to ensure better road safety for motorists: • pedestrians may be distracted by electronic devices, making them unpredictable — always be on the lookout; • be careful when driving in areas with schools; • take care when passing a taxi or a bus as passengers may be alighting; and • in poor visibility, be especially mindful that pedestrians may be on the road. Some tips for pedestrians include: • make yourself as visible as possible; • don’t cross national highways; • be aware of your surroundings; and • don’t drink or use drugs before walking along the road. The AA urged all road users not to take chances because their actions impact on others. - Supplied.

cial-cohesion movement for people who want to make a positive contribution to South Africa’s future. Weekend and holiday safaris will build up towards a primary eco-tourism project that will be launched with a festival on the Umtamvuna Ridge at a later stage. Joint-ventures will not only ensure an income base for locals right from the start – but will also help to establish an integrated business model and much-needed nation-building spirit. In association with VIP Multimedia Network Solutions two involved community members, Priscilla Nyembezi and Norman Stoffels, are excited to invite volunteers. Priscilla, a pastor’s wife would love to share her vision with other pioneers, groups of friends, family, church or youth leaders who would like to join them for a few chores and some fun activities. The only cost for the first camp-out will be for meals prepared by the ladies. The local policing forum will provide a security service. Volunteers are asked to bring some indigenous trees with them that can be planted on site as a symbolic gesture and sky lanterns for those who want to release them at night with messages of hope.
