A number of reasons to celebrate

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Suspect evades SAPS for over a year, arrested A MAN, who had been on the run since April 2015, was finally arrested on Saturday. Detective Constable Thabane Dlamini arrested the 26-year-old alleged house burglar. The man was on the wanted list for a house-breaking case which occurred on 2 April, 2015 at Tin Town, Mehlomnyama.
The owner of the house returned home that day after attending an Easter event, when he discovered his house had been broken into and several items stolen. Investigation linked the suspect to the crime. The suspect, however, left the area. “On Saturday, more than a
year after the crime was committed, his luck ran out when Detective Constable Dlamini saw him and arrested him,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. “It is expected he will also be linked to four more house-breaking cases in the area,” she added. - Supplied.
Man turns himself in for drugrelated case THE second wanted suspect in a drug related case is expected to appear in court on Friday after he handed him self over to police in Margate. The 26yearold man was charged by Detective Warrant Officer Herman Pienaar from the Ugu cluster drug
task team on Wednesday. The first suspect, a 34yearold man, was arrested in Tin Town Gama lakhe in July. The man’s bail application was de nied and he will appear in court again with his coaccused on Friday.
Public Order Policing members, Constable Mzwakhe Makana, Consta ble Raphael Smithwick and Consta ble Travis Dickens found the first sus pect in possession of 11 parcels, con taining 3 300 capsules of heroin and 125 mandrax tablets.

forum’s Ernest Booysen. Concerns about illegal car guards, who are suspected to be involved in drug peddling and house break-ins were also raised at the meeting which took place at the library recently. On 26 July, Gert Ludge represented the forum at a meeting between SAPS and Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority where action steps had been laid down to address the problem. “All car guards will have to be registered within the next two months after which non-registered persons will be arrested and seriously dealt with,” said Booysen. “This problem should be something of the past towards the end of the year,” he added.
FOUR people were seriously injured in a head-on collision on the R61 in Southbroom on Friday afternoon. Kwazulu Private Ambulance paramedics and other emergency services found the wreckage of the two vehicles and a boat. The engine of one of the vehicles were found a couple of metres away from it. “Two of the passengers were entrapped. With assistance from SAPS and the fire department, both the females were extricated. They were stabilised and transported to hospital,” said Belinda Catchpole, spokesperson for Kwazulu Private Ambulance. - Supplied.
One dead, two seriously injured in accidents ONE person died and another sustained serious injuries in Gclimia near Margate on Tuesday night after being hit by a car. Netcare 911 paramedics treated the pedestrian. “Paramedics found that two people had been hit by a vehicle. The woman died at the scene, while the man sustained serious injuries,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha. Paramedics stabilised the man at the scene before he was transported to hospital under the care of an advanced life support paramedic. On Monday afternoon, Netcare 911 paramedics treated a man, in his thirties, after his car rolled several times along the R61 in Port Edward. “After examining the driver, paramedics established that the man sustained serious injuries. Medics treated the patient at the scene before they transported him to a hospital in Margate,” said Botha. - Supplied.

Shocking attitude to rape common in SA – study >> Around the globe 120 million girls experience forced intercourse
A
LMOST one in 10 South Africans believe that forced sexual intercourse is appropriate in certain situations. This is according to renowned market research company, Ipsos’s latest Pulse of the People study. Ipsos found that the majority of South Africans (58%) agreed with the statement, “it is always wrong to have sex with someone against his or her will”. However, eight percent of adults disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement. Ipsos South Africa’s director of public affairs, Mari Harris, said they posed the question to different age groups across race groups in South Africa. The participants in the survey had to say whether they agreed, strongly agreed, disagreed or strongly
disagreed with the statements . “Although a firm majority of 58% strongly agreed, overall eight percent of adults in South Africa either strongly disagreed or disagreed with the statement,” she said. Young people, aged between 15 and 17, expressed themselves as especially strongly opposed to forced intercourse. A total of 3 861 face-to-face interviews were conducted with randomly selected South Africans for the survey. The interviews were done in the homes and home languages of the interviewees by trained fieldworkers from all population groups. “Interviews were done all over the country, from metropolitan areas to deep rural areas. This methodology ensured that the results are representative of the views of the universe [of the

study] and that findings can be weighted and projected to the universe,” Harris said. “According to United Nations statistics, approximately one in every three women (35%) worldwide experiences physical violence and/or sexual violence at some point in her life.” “Around the globe, approximately 120 million girls experience forced intercourse or other forms of forced sexual acts at some point. Against this background, South Africa is thus not unique when it comes to the sexual abuse of women and children,” Harris said. Respondents were also asked how well the South African government was handling violence against women and children. Only about four in every 10 (38%) adults said the government was handling the issue “very well” or

Harris suspected this was linked to competition for scarce job opportunities. Other findings indicated the existence of a deep-seated and growing problem concerning perceptions about the abilities of women. This was reflected in opinions about education for girls and about women’s abilities as political leaders. In many instances, women themselves did not have confidence in their own abilities. “The active promotion of gender equality can be one of the most important building blocks in uniting South African men and women of all population groups,” said Harris. Pietermaritzburg Child Welfare director Julie Todd, who works with rape victims, said the results of the survey directly linked to the “patriarchal society we live in today”. She said the hierarchy in most organisations tended to be male. “Society shows that men and boys dominate, and women are subservient. “This, and the fact that we live in a very violent era, is the problem in society,” Todd said. - Reporter.
“fairly well”. The study further delved into the workings of men and women and how far society had come in achieving equality. According to the study, almost a third (30%) of South African adults said that “a woman’s place is in the house”. This figure was up from 24% in 2015. “It is clear that we are very far from achieving the equality specified in our Constitution. However, it is not necessarily older people, like one would conventionally believe, who feel the strongest about this, but rather those in the 35-49 age group where 32% agreed with the statement,” said Harris. In addition, 31% of people in the 3549 age group (and 30% of South African adults overall) agreed with the statement “when jobs are scarce, men should have more rights to jobs than women”.
Pet saves couple’s lives PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede2media24.com AN Umtentweni couple are grateful for what their Pekingese, Cleo, did for them over the weekend. Denise and Jean Pierre le Roux
were sleeping when they awoke to their dog barking on Sunday at around 4am. Denise said when her husband noticed that the barking did not stop, he went to check. “My husband went to check and
found that something was burning in the kitchen - our fridge had caught alight,” said Denise. She said if the dog had not woken them up they could have died from smoke inhalation and the entire kitchen could have burnt down.

HE KZN MEC of Arts and Culture, Bongiwe SitholeMoloi, unveiled a number of projects that are to start within Ugu District Municipality. They include the construction of a library in Vulamehlo, the extension and refurbishing of Port Shepstone Library and buidling a maritime museum. “We know that libraries can change MEC of Art and Culture, Bongiwe SitholeMoloi, outlines the new projects at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre. lives, improve pass rates and provide research facilities for our communities. Information is power and we are here to deliver this power to you,” she said. The Hibiscus Coast Municipality has 11 libraries, which has to serve over 250 000 people, and the MEC said there is a need for a “mega” library. “It is for this reason that the old Port Shepstone Library is being extended to a three-storey building at a cost of R67 million. This is to enable our services to cater for local and surrounding area communities.” The maritime museum, next to Kapenta Bay Hotel, is being rebuilt at a cost of R17 million because it is small and the building is dilapidated, result-
ing in some items being destroyed. “The new building will have enough space for the existing collection and exhibitions. Additional facilities, such as an amphitheatre, will be used to host schools. The museum project will be completed in March 2017,” she said. Vulamehlo and Umzumbe municipalities are also getting new libraries. “Vulamehlo Library is under construction - the project is valued at R28 million and will be completed before the end of the current financial year,” said Sithole-Moloi. She said the Mzumbe project will cost R25 million. The projects will generate job opportunities in the construction sector as well as train young people.
Mental healthcare facility now available in Ugu District CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com THE Ugu District now has a halfway house for people suffering with mental illnesses. The Hibberdene Care Centre, opened by Felicity Govender 17 years ago as an old-age home, has new plans on the horizon. “We’ve started with the construc-
tion of another building that will house male patients. The existing house will be for female patients only,” said Govender. The 35-bed facility is expected to be complete by 2017. “We are waiting for funding from the National Lottery,” she said. The Port Shepstone Hospital is the nearest health facility where mentally ill patients are treated
twice a week. However, they still need counselling and extra care to get them on the road to recovery. “Their families and care-givers also need to be educated about patients’ condition and how to administer medication. In many cases, there is no proper education and families disown their loved ones,” she said. Each patient is to spend three to
six months at the care centre before they are returned to their family. “There will be a nurse, social worker and a counsellor at the new facility. Mentally ill people will not have to go to separate facilities to get treatment. It will all be provided at the care centre.” October is Mental Health Awareness Month and Govender would like anybody affected by mental
health to forward suggestions on how to create awareness about the issue. “I would like testimonials from anyone, especially professional people, to speak about how they have managed to lead a normal life with a mental health condition,” said Govender. CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com THE Shelly Full Gospel Church hosted a fund-raiser for Child Welfare Port Shepstone on Saturday to support the valuable work done by the organisation. Visitors were entertained in song, worship dance by the Baruch Dance Group from the church, dance and a modelling show. Lucky draw prizes were also handed out. The guest speaker, Dr Grace Effanga, encouraged women to live Godly lives in all areas including body, soul and spirit. “She emphasised we should be women of worth in our everyday lives and our inner beauty will show in our outward appearance. “The men of the church outdid themselves, by cooking, serving the ladies and cleaning up afterwards,” said Sagree Naicker, manager for Child Welfare Port Shepstone. “They certainly showed us that the kitchen is not a place for women only. Child Welfare Port Shepstone thanks the church for adopting us as the annual recipient of the fund-raiser,” she said.

Last year Zindela was also nominated, and this nomination comes after his recent achievements at the Safta Awards and his recent visit to Cannes, France, where he put the South Coast on the map. Zindela said this means a lot to him as he is busy with plans for the Ugu Film Festival, which will be taking place on 15 September. This is not the first time he has been nominated. “It the second time this year. “I was nominated by National Film and Video Foundation for Special Recognition for Provincial Development. “I won the award and it was broadcast live on SABC2. “There are no words to describe what this means to me, it is more than what a person can explain. “I am motivated to continue doing what I do best and what is best for my community. “These awards inspire me and my fans to shine in our corner without moving to big towns. Municipality officially opens multipurpose skills centre
FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION
UGU District Municipality officially opened its multipurpose skills centre at the Ugu District main office at 28 Connor Street recently. This centre was officially opened by the municipal manager, DD Naidoo, and forms part of the municipality’s skills development initiative where all employee training will be conducted to ensure that a wide range of employees are trained in various aspects of their employment. The centre was built with the objective of saving on training costs through using our own facility and training larger groups.
This training facility will also be used as a computer training room for staff who require basic computerskill training. The centre can accommodate 20 trainees per session. This skills development initiative will improve the performance of employees so they can effectively deliver services to communities. The Ugu District Municipality will continue to promote working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for our communities.
At the official opening of the training centre (from left) Norma Grobler (information communication technology manager), Norma Grobler, Velal Mazibuko (HR senior manager) DD Naidoo (municipal manager) and Vuyiwe Tsako (corporate services general manager).
Being at the top LAST week it was announced that one of our home-grown companies, The Beekman Group, won the tourism category at the KZN Top Business Awards, which is an outstanding accolade for the Port Shepstone company. Some time ago in the media somebody questioned the impressiveness of our tourism sector and whether or not we are a top class tourism destination. I suppose all one can do is look at the facts. Besides The Beekman Group achievement, our hospitality and adventure services sector has recently won global and national awards and we await the latest announcements for the competitive Lilizela Awards for which a number of properties have been put forward for recognition. We have two of the world’s top 10 dives sites and with the Marine Protected Areas coming on stream we will become one of the continents more environmentally conscious destinations. Our seven Blue Flag Beaches are the highest number of permanently managed in South Africa and these beaches meet with exacting international standards. Adventure and endurance activity locations on the coast and inland are rapidly gaining status as ideal places to train and compete and this is an excellent platform from which to bring regional, national and international events to
JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM the area. The coast’s surfing beaches are recognised as being of the best in the Southern Hemisphere and our golf courses regularly host top notch events for both professional and amateur golfer. Our South Coast Dezzie Raceway is now firmly on the motor sport calendar and from a film tourism perspective, our destination has been the location for nearly a dozen movies in the last year or so. If one links the above to the fact that SafariNow considers the South Coast as South Africa’s most popular value for money family destination. It is clear that there is a great deal we can be proud of and certainly we promote these pluses at every opportunity. We aspire to be at the top in as many tourism and leisure spheres as possible and as such working closely with the private sector’s positive strivers is part of that proactive approach. As one season has ended, we are now focusing on our end-of-year seasons and pushing our pluses at the consumer shows we will be attending.

Hi Susan, Surely my dog should do what I want him to do because he loves me, not because I bribe him? Tanya Hi Tanya, I’m afraid it’s not that simple. Our brains have a natural reward centre, which is a survival mechanism. Habits and behaviours are learnt and remembered if they are rewarded, or avoided if not. You might have observed that monkeys and birds, for example, will frequent a place with food, and bypass a barren area. Many wild animals are now so successfully taught using positive reward-based methods that they willingly accept medication and veterinary attention. Training involves linking a behaviour to a reward, repeated again and again in order to make the behaviour a posi-
tive memory, and then gradually phasing out the reward. Additionally, the reward centre releases feel-good chemicals when activated in such a way. You cannot expect a child to do something unpleasant such as tedious homework or chores just because he or she loves you. But you can expect your child to get into the right habits if completion of the homework is rewarded with reasonable time to watch a television programme or go out and play with friends. Treats or sweets offered by vets and doctors, respectively, have the purpose of making the positive experience more rewarding in order to counter the negative treatment such as an injection. Of course this is a method of establishing a desired behaviour pattern. Most humans work for a financial reward and this is what gets people through the drudge of working life. If people didn’t benefit in any way, how many people would carry on working? Only those who have a very strong dedication to a cause that they find important will work for no financial gain, but unfortunately not many have sufficient love of work for its own sake. Once your dog learns a behaviour, sporadic reinforcing should be sufficient to maintain it. If you require something of a dog when he happens to be enjoying running around madly or enjoying some other pleasurable activity, you have to make it more worthwhile for him to come to you, by offering an even better option. This is not bribing. It is conditioning a required response. Rewards are what motivate people and animals to keep on trying and learning. Thank you for an interesting question. - Susan Henderson© (accredited animal behaviourist)

President is a liability
WHEN everything around us seems all doom and gloom with the severe drought, poverty, lawlessness, localelection tension, political killings, corruption, terrorism and so much more, the Lord still remains faithful. The recent rains are evidence that he never abandons his people. It is with great delight that I say thank you to the almighty for the tremendous relief that this water from heaven has brought in, quenching the parched earth. While many may still say that the drought has not been broken yet and farmers are still in dire need of more rain, let us be thankful for what we have just received. It is indeed so refreshing to smell cleaner air, to hear the tyres of vehicles sloshing through water on the roads and to see little
green shoots beginning to sprout in our gardens. The bonus of the snow that has fallen so close to our city has brought with it so much excitement to both adults and children alike. Indeed, this is a blessing from the God of all creation. We should not forget that we are the earthly stewards and custodians of all his creation and we should accept this duty with responsibility. So then let us conserve water for it is not an unlimited resource. Let us not pollute it and let us not waste it. I humbly appeal to everyone to play his or her role in saving water. Lord almighty, thank you for the gift of life-giving rain. I pray that you will give us one more thing, “the gift of a grateful heart”. Dennis Moodley
Archaic beliefs and brainwashing IN her letter, Dr L. J. Peltz asks: “How primitive is our nation if we are still resorting to ancestor worship. How can a primitive people reconcile with other Eastern and Western cultures?” (4 August). Yes, ancestor worship is a primitive aspect of culture, but so is the worship of gods in the Eastern and Western cultures referred to. Secondly, many enlightened Africans, Asians or Europeans have been informed by reason and do not hold these ridiculous archaic beliefs. It seems thoughtless and racist to me to single out the African
culture for criticism and fail to recognise the same dependence on unproven and illogical beliefs in virtually all other cultures. There is obviously a strong need in the human psyche to believe in life after death, a hereafter and other fanciful myths, and this is universal, the only exceptions being those of us who are able to open our minds and be informed by reason. All of these beliefs are inculcated from a young age and it is clear that many of us are unable overcome this brainwashing. Atheist
Don’t follow party bosses blindly BY now it should be more than obvious to even the most loyal and sycophantic supporter, that if your leader is a “lemon”, and you blindly defend and support the incessant faux pas, poor judgments and idiotic utterances, at best, you will end up with a sour and, in reality, bitter taste in your mouth. Will the folly of blind loyalty sink in, or will the supporters follow the fatal
lessons of the past Nationalist Party supporters until doomsday dawns? Viva democracy, and let us all unite and build the country into the colossus it has all the potential to be. Efficient, honest and committed application and deference to the electorate’s wishes, making a promise a certainty, will go a long way. C. MacGillivray

Nothing is free WE, the citizens of this great country, have been the victims of deceit by the ruling party. From the birth of democracy, the masses have been promised free education, housing and medical treatment. As any competent businessperson knows, nothing is free. Handing out free groceries at your local grocer will result in bankruptcy. The funds have to come from somewhere. So who pays for all the freebees? In South Africa, there are only 3,3 million taxpayers.
Considering that there are approximately 22 million people within the working age group in our country, it is frightening to think that just 3,3 million people have to pay for corruption, free medical treatment, free education and free housing. These 3,3 million taxpayers are further burdened to foot the bill of the huge South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) budget. This is to provide freebees to individuals who in some cases don’t qualify for these benefits. Another great idea by the ruling party.

My advice to the opposition parties is to do all in their power to keep him in place until 2019, by which time voter support for the ANC will almost certain ly have fallen below 50%. The ruling party has promised the people of South Africa free services at the expense of us, the working class. I’m quite certain that the ANC does not have a trillion rand lying around somewhere to honour these empty promises, which were made just to secure votes. A business will only prosper if the available resources are optimised. Look at the South African economy as a business — 3,3 million people is not optimisation, it is deceit. Yugesh Heeralall

Ongelukkig het my werkgewer my na twee jaar ‘gefire’.” Ek vra waarom. “Ek was ‘useless’,” kom die antwoord.
Des voeg by daar was geen oornagsukses nie. “Louise was my groot steunpilaar oor die jare, asook die kinders.
JOHAN PRETORIUS
A
Des se groot liefde is motorrenne in alle verskillende formate.

orde.

Food and wine event coming up T
will showcase a number of wine exhibitions, tasting and food pairing. The event will be held at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday 29
Organiser Mildred Dlamini says they are expecting between 2 000 and 3 000 people. “We believe in promoting emerging SMMEs by providing exhibition stalls and to market their products to an untapped market,” she said. The event will also benefit local tourism product owners as visitors from other parts of KZN and provinces are expected. “Some of our objectives are to inform and promote everyday healthy living lifestyle through food and wine, to increase yield from food and wine
October and aims to tackle an emerging market as there is evidence there is a lot of interest in the love for wine in this area.
tourism, to increase visitor satisfaction with food and wine experiences and to increase interstate awareness of the quality, diversity and accessibility of wine regions and food tourism experiences,” said Dlamini. The target market is the food industry, hospitality students, graduates and professionals, wineries, wine farms, restaurant owners, distributors and wine lovers, SMMEs and potential businesses, tourists and working-class citizens in and within the Lower South Coast, KZN and Eastern Cape. Food and wine tasting stands will be open for only two hours, the pairing of wine and food, prepared by the chefs. Exhibition stands are limited to 123 under a white frame marquee at R1 500 per 3mx3m space partitioned with speed fencing only. Cash bar and restaurant will be available to serve light meals, wines and cocktails. Tickets from Computicket at R150 per person. They will also be available at the gate. Biker boys enjoy ‘rough ride’ T
HE Paddock Club Off-Road Motorbike Fun Ride last Sunday at Hillstream Estates was another great success. There were a total of 95 entrants of which 55 tackled the approximate 25km “Experienced” track, 32 enjoyed the approximate 10km “NoviceIntermediate” track and seven young riders practiced their skills on the about two-kilometre “Pee-Wee” track. The Novice and Experienced tracks turned out to be challenging after the huge rains a few weeks ago. One of the top riders commented about the Experienced track being one
of the best rides he has done in a while. “A big thank you to our main sponsors, County Ford, ALS Cartage, New Holland, Sherco and Kenny,” said Angus Adie, one event organisers. The new Paddock Extreme Enduro-X Track was huge success. “This track was full of obstacles such as tyre and log pits, a rock garden, massive tyres, pipes and log obstacles and the 21 brave riders found it very challenging,” he said. It was great entertainment for spectators to watch some local farm-
ers, amateur riders and youngsters competing against the likes of South Africa’s top riders. After two gruelling heats Wade Young blasted into first place, Scott Bouverie came second and Kyle Flanagan, third. Congratulations also to the winners of the second class riders, Hansie Wagenaar (first), Josh Bailey (second) and Josh Henderson (third). “A big thank you to all the riders, spectators and sponsors of the day,” he added. - Supplied.
