A number of reasons to celebrate

south coast This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

HE DA has laid criminal charges against the Ugu District Municipality once again. They claim the municipality allegedly allowed the Uvongo lagoon

to become contaminated after failing to contain a sewage spill. About 18 months ago the DA laid the same charge against the municipality for allegedly neglecting a sewage spill into the Umbango River. The matter is still being investigated. In terms of the National Water

Act, no person may unlawfully and intentionally or negligently commit any act or omission that pollutes or is likely to pollute a water source. The DA’s George Henderson said on Monday at a press briefing and site tour, that Ugu had violated this law. “The problem was reported to Ugu on 20 December. Accord-

Woman sneaks dagga into prison

A safe and above satisfactory season CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com

“E

VEN with a downturn in our economy the season can overall be deemed as better than just satisfactory,” said Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO, Justin Mackrory. “In spite of the setbacks from the water issue we have had good reports that most retail enterprises in the tourism sector had a busy season and accommodation stock was taken up,” he said. Sergeant Zama Sikhakhana with the daggalaced food. A WOMAN, who tried to smuggle dagga into prison while visiting a friend, was arrested on New Year’s Day at the Port Shepstone Police Station. The man he was visiting was arrested a few days earlier for dealing in dagga. The case was postponed to 13 January. There were three packets of drugs concealed in a stew, which the woman took to the police station. There were also biscuits laced with dagga that the woman also brought along. An alert police officer, Sergeant Zama Sikhakhana, thought something was amiss and started searching the cooked stew in the plastic ice-cream container. “She found three small parcels of dagga, which were wrapped in plastic hidden inside the stew,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. She then discovered the biscuits that were laced with dagga leaves. The woman was arrested and detained. She then paid an admission of guilt of R500. - Supplied.

season survey of the season has been conducted, the tourism body will have a better picture of how the December holiday season progressed. “Naturally there would have been some fall-out in visitor satisfaction levels due to water and sewerage issues, but the combination of infrastructure remedy and our concerted media and publicity actions should negate any medium to long-term aftershocks,” he added. The Keg and Galleon’s Henry Scholtz said water woes affected

business “slightly”, but luckily the Margate restaurant has water storage tanks on the property. “Our overall turnover for the December season was down compared to last year, but we still had a good and busy season,” he said. SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said crime had stablised over the season. “We are fortunate that crime has stabilised during this period. Proper planning, long hours and hard work by all our SAPS members and officers as well as other

law enforcement agencies resulted in a fairly quiet period as far as serious crimes are concerned. “In the majority of the crimes reported, we effected arrests. We also want to thank the community for playing a major role by reporting suspicious persons and vehicles and assisting the police to curb crime in the Ugu area,” added Wiid. The cluster commander, MajorGeneral Sethenya Nxamagele, expressed her appreciation to her members for their commitment over the holidays.

‘Kangaroo court’ perpetrators arrested THREE people appeared in Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court this week for attempted murder after they allegedly set a Bhobhoyi man alight in September in 2016. The 37-year-old victim told police he was at home when four people came to his house and asked him “to go with them”. The man refused and upon doing so the four allegedly forced him into a minibus. They then allegedly took him to a deserted place in Bhobhoyi where they tied his hands to a tree

and poured petrol over him. They then set his hands and legs alight, claiming they were punishing him for stealing a laptop. Community members found him and rushed to his assistance. He was taken to hospital, received medical treatment and recovered. In December 2016, Captain Simphiwe Shusha, and other police members arrested a man and a woman for the crime. They appeared in court on 6 January were released on bail. The case was postponed to 10

ONSTABLE Manqoba Zulu (30), who is stationed at Margate Police Station is in a critical condition at Netcare St Augustine Hospital in Durban after he was attacked and beaten by a group of men in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka has confirmed that Zulu’s condition is critical as he suffered severe head injuries. Mfeka said Zulu was attacked while offduty and was at a Gamalakhe tavern when he allegedly got into an argument with a group of men. “Zulu was rushed to Gamalakhe Clinic that morning and was later transferred to Margate Hospital as his condition was very critical. From there he was transferred to St Augustine Hospital in Durban,” said Mfeka. He said an attempted murder case was opened that day. “On Tuesday Gamalakhe detectives arrested a 36-year-old male in connection with the attack and he appeared at Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday,” said Mfeka. The outcome was not available at the time of going to press. Mfeka said investigations are continuing to find the other suspects.

Water woes disrupt festivities 4

HINGS came to a head during the December holidays when persistent water shortages saw some areas on the South Coast go for days without a single drop. By midday last Tuesday some sections of Ramsgate still had no water. Angry residents took to social media to express fury over what many

called “shoddy service delivery by Ugu District Municipality”. Others disputed their December statements saying they have been over-billed for a service they could not access. In December, Ugu workers, aligned to the South African Municipality Workers Union (Samwu), embarked on a strike over policy payouts. They allegedly tampered with water and sanitation infrastructure, leading to a disruption in supply in some areas. When contacted Ugu spokesperson France Zama said the festive season disruptions

were largely due to high demand, which ultimately had an adverse impact on the water system. “As of Friday 6 January, remarkable progress had been made in resuscitating our water network to cope with the demand as most of the areas which had no water were restored. “All affected areas during the festive season have been fully restored,” said Zama. Although Zama said a normal water supply was to resume in Ramsgate on Tuesday, some residents in the area were still without water at the time of going to press yesterday.

MERLEWOOD Secondary pupil Zizipho Msebenzi has put the school on the map after obtaining seven distinctions in the 2016 matric exams, a first for the school because no other pupil has managed this exceptional achievement. The school obtained an 80.37% pass rate, a 15% increase from last year’s 65%. Zizipho studied English, Zulu, mathematics, physical sciences, geography, life sciences and life orientation. She has been accepted by various universities in her endeavour to pursue a career in medicine, but after much deliberation has chosen the University of Cape Town. “The staff of Merlewood Secondary wish her everything of the best,” said Indira Nair from the school.

spillages eventually lead to the Uvongo Lagoon. In Masinenge, 26 families share a temporary sewerage system that consists of three Jojo tanks and pipes. This was one of the spills that lead to a tributary and then into the Uvongo Lagoon. “According to residents this has been going on for over two weeks,” said Henderson. A resident said that Ugu had attended to the spill on Sunday. The second spill, near the bowling green leads into a storm-water drain and subsequently into the river. “There is no permanent solution to this spillage. It has been unblocked by Ugu on several occasions with no permanent solution. “Ugu has been caught with its pants down, deliberately lying to and misleading the public.” The DA said it had a solution to this problem, which it will make public at a later stage. Henderson said over 1 000 people had been treated at local hospitals for gastroenteritis during the holiday season, which was above the norm. In a press release, the Ugu District Municipality last week confirmed that the lagoon was contaminated and banned all swimming. France Zama, Ugu District Municipality spokesperson said they were in the process of ascertaining the validity of the claims made by the DA. “I must indicate that our physical investigations showed no traces of sewage spillage from our system and until conclusive evidence of the source of contamination has

HE Pietermaritzburg SAPS Mounted Unit were brought to the South Coast over the festive season to help maintain order and stirred up a lot of interest as they did their patrols on horseback. Starting in Scottburgh on 23 December, 2016 they moved on to Hibberdene, Port Edward, Margate and Port Shepstone, spending a day in each town. Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the mounted unit was used as a force multiplier in various areas over the festive period because its members have certain advantages over the standard patrol vehicles used in policing. “The horses move swiftly yet silently, and easily make their way through crowds, over undulating terrain, through pathways and on the beaches without any need to engage four-

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commander, Major General Bheki Langa expressed his thanks and appreciation to the members of the Mounted Unit for the duties they performed in the province. “Their presence has impacted positively in our fight against crime in the province,” said Langa. - Supplied. High cost of going back to school >> Parents shocked at how much they have to spend on backtoschool essentials OMEGA MOAGI

G

OING back to school is not cheap. It costs about R1 100 for a Grade 1 pupil’s basic school necessities and about R1 700 for a Grade 8 pupil. As schools reopened this week, parents have been digging deep into their pocket to be able to afford just the basics. Fever visited shops to find out the cost of the back-to-school essentials this year. A basic uniform, including a shirt, vest, pants, jersey, socks and shoes for a Grade 1 pupil, costs up to around

R550 for boys and around R488 for girls. Having to buy school uniforms for the first time this year, Terisse and Fabian Sukhai said they were shocked by how much they had to spend. “We had to buy at least two sets of everything and including stationery and the amount came up to about R2 800. It was quite shocking. “We weren’t expecting it to be that high,” said dad Fabian. First-time high school pupils will have to pay even more. For a Grade 8 pupil, the cost of the same basic set of uniform amounts to around R790 for boys and R724 for girls.

The mother of a Grade 9 pupil Sheron Pule said she wished she had budgeted better. “The blazer alone costs R550. If only we knew this before we did all that travelling in December. There’s also stationery, which goes up to R500 and more. “It’s really hectic, but we’re making ends meet,” said Pule. Stationery for a Grade 8 pupil came to around R850 and for a Grade 1 around R485. A manager at a stationery store, who asked not to be named, said the back-to-school season is the busiest time of the year for them. “Back to school for us is bigger than Christmas, because for Christmas, people have a variety of places to shop at, whereas for back to school there are only a few specialised shops that

12 January 2017 provide back-to-school products,” she said. Yesterday the IFP called on the Competition Commission to include KwaZulu-Natal in its probe into “school uniform monopolies”, adding that school uniform prices are too high and parents are forced to buy uniforms in certain areas that hold a monopoly. IFP KZN Education spokesperson Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa said the investigation is important because monopolies result in poorer households not being able to afford school uniforms. “Many people depend on social grants, but when you consider school uniform prices, they come to more than the social grants that people receive.

“This results in too many children going to school without shoes because their parents can only manage to buy a few items for them,” he said. Madlopha-Mthethwa also invited the Education MEC to join in the call and prevent the exclusion of the poor from schools due to incorrect school uniforms. “Every child has a right to education, so therefore it doesn’t make sense to chase them away if they don’t have proper school uniform without knowing the real causes and the circumstances which resulted in that,” said Madlopha-Mthethwa.

ETTING a matric with university entrance is one of the primary goals of secondary education. However, not everyone obtains a university entrance, leaving them with a basic matric education. What opportunities are there for these matriculants, and what paths can they follow to create careers for themselves? Let’s have a look at some of the avenues open to these school-leavers. Go straight into the job market There are several immediate advantages to this. For a start, money starts flowing in quickly, and there is no need to go into debt in order to study further. Finding a job straight out of school can be a tough undertaking, however. The current employment scenario is not a particularly good one for school-leavers, with a very high unemployment rate in this segment of the population. And where there are jobs available, prospective employers more often than not look for a certain amount of experience, which school-leavers obviously lack. For these reasons we need to look at other options for matriculants, to improve their employability and make them more attractive and desirable in the job market. Study further There are many further study options open to matriculants who do not have university entrance. In choosing a tertiary education direction the first step is to decide on a desired vocation. This will determine what type of institute to study at or whether to take a different approach. Institutions offering diploma courses to matriculants are plentiful in the major centres of South Africa. For instance, for those interested in marketing there is the IMM Graduate School of Marketing, or for those wanting to pursue a digital design career there is the Vega School, and so on. There are also plenty of general purpose colleges offering a wide range of diploma courses for matriculants. Go into a trade Another option is to go into a trade and take courses at a technical institute. These are often linked to real-world work experience programmes, which can lead to employment once the necessary certification is obtained. There are also workplace apprenticeships in which a school-leaver can enrol, which can give the advantage of generating income while learning a trade. Entrepreneurship There is a further option for school-leavers; one that is taking on ever-increasing importance in the context of South Africa as a developing country. With its relatively slow economic growth rate and high unemployment, the South African economy needs as much stimulus as possible. One of the most important drivers of this is entrepreneurship, with its ability to create jobs, generate taxable income and provide growth. For matriculants with the right mindset, starting a business, however small, is certainly a viable option. One might almost say that in order to meet the country’s entrepreneurship needs, it is also a necessity that a certain number of people start their own businesses, with an eye on growth and sustainability.

Gap year And finally, if you are a recent matriculant who is completely unsure of what direction to take, there is the increasingly popular option of a “gap year”. This will give you the time to take stock and discover what it is that you really want to do. You can take this opportunity to travel, if that is affordable, or else take a part-time job to get some work experience. Whatever your preference, it’s important to realise that matriculating without a university entrance is by no means something that needs to curtail the opportunities available to you. - Supplied.

THE new Holiness Union Church (Huc) Betania East Circuit, Gamalakhe branch building was officially opened on Saturday, 7 January, with more than 500 people attending the event, hosted by Pastor MD Mchunu. Mchunu gave a background of how the project was started in 2011 and highlighted the different stages and the total expenditure incurred. “This project costs slightly above a million rand to date. There are still touch-ups needed, and we are grateful to God that today we are opening the building officially.” Included on the guest list was Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa, the Huc National Council chairperson. Mbanjwa praised church members for contributing to the house of the Lord and encouraged them and the Be-

tania East circuit to take care of the new building. Mbanjwa said that although the building belonged to the church, it must be open to service the needs of the entire community. Also gracing the event were pastors from churches in Gamalakhe, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Zululand and other areas. Chairperson of all Huc pastors in South Africa, Pastor Mambo Mkhize congratulated the church and the building committee and encouraged members to make it their priority to take care of the pastor and his family. Church leadership, guests and the community were led to the building by the Umtwalume Brass Band for the official cutting of the ribbon, marking the official opening. Huc members invited the community to join them every Sunday from 9am to 11.30am.

TOURISM 360

Insights of the season JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM TO begin with to the community of our district, best wishes for 2017. This season has been one of peaks and worrisome and unexpected water situation early into the holiday season. When the water situation loomed, we as a tourism organisation immediately conveyed our concerns to the dis-

trict municipality, who under extreme duress, did all in their power to avoid what could have been a much bigger setback for our industry. That being said and despite the water situation, initial feedback has been encouraging in that within most tourism areas available accommodation stock was invariably non-existent or in extremely short supply and generally beach activations went off smoothly for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.

Furthermore, the very congested public holidays appear to have been better managed by local and law enforcement authorities than in the past. The national high density beach attendance trend is always a challenge for everybody concerned and each year better crowd control and influx management systems here are becoming more effective. Out visitor information centres have indicated that the number of complaints was noticeably down from

previous years and here at our head office we can report the same. Our tourism sector and community at large can be congratulated in doing all things possible to ensure that our customers were suitably hosted with minimal disruption. Had the water situation not arisen I would have no fear of contradiction in stating that since my taking up of office it would have been by far the best year-end season in three years. Going forward, we will continue to aggressively drive our promotional and publicity efforts and to encourage further investment in tourism product

and tourism support infrastructure so that by early 2018 we can with conviction claim that our wonderful basket of attractions have realised a bumper response from consumers. To this end, we will soon be introducing our next five year strategy as a road map towards ensuring that our tourism and leisure sector realises growth and associated benefit for our entire community. As they say in one or other script “It is always more energising greeting a sunrise than saying farewell to a sunset.” May 2017 be rewarding to us all.

Final call to apply for mayoral bursary UGU District Municipality remains committed to education by ensuring that deserving tertiary students are granted an opportunity to further their studies through the Ugu District Mayoral Bursary Fund Programme every year. A final call for bursary applications is being made by the municipality to students who have successfully applied in acknowledged tertiary institutions that are registered and accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) to receive financial assistance from the municipality. The municipality is offering financial assistance to students who are

residents of Ugu District, who come from an indigent family background, have achieved excellent matric results and are successfully registered with DHET acknowledged institutions of higher learning and universities. The municipality will only consider applications accompanied by: • certified copy of matric results; • certified copy of identity document • proof of residence from the relevant ward councillor • letter of acceptance from the university or institution where you have applied; and • proof of income of parents (pension card, payslip or bank statement). Applications close on Friday, 13 January at 4pm and must be submitted to: The Senior Manager: Human Resources on 31 Bazley Street, Port Shepstone. In 2016, the municipality granted over R230 000 worth of bursaries to the most deserving tertiary students from across the district to pay for tuition and stationery for the 2016 academic year. Since the inception of this programme, numerous students have

benefited with some being assisted with 100% bursaries. The municipality continues to put emphasis on the importance of local government playing a pivotal role towards building a strong local graduate professional base by providing muchneeded assistance to deserving students who are studying towards a professional career. Our municipality is planting a seed towards ensuring an improved level of the graduate professional base in the district. The inception of this programme came about through the identification of a need to financially assist deserving students to further their education and become professionals who can build our district. The municipality continues to place education at the apex of its priorities in moving our district forward and the Mayor’s Bursary Fund reflects this commitment. Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for local communities.

Why are many KwaZuluNatal doctors sitting at home? KZN’s Health Department is still reeling from the bad decision taken to freeze posts. While the department is in denial over this, the reality is that the red tape that was implemented when all posts were frozen remains in effect, with the result that the employment and placement of doctors remains problematic and in limbo. Meanwhile, both the provincial Health Department and Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s spokesperson, Joe Maila, continue to refute the real reason doctors are sitting at home unemployed. Every oversight visit conducted by the DA in 2016 confirmed that the department remains cash-strapped and that vacancies exist. Worst affected are the patients in our province. This bureaucratic nightmare means longer queues for them as the doctors become increasingly tired, frustrated and

burnt-out. The end result is more rude doctors and more mistakes, both of which are likely to push the province’s R10 billion medico-legal claim bill even higher. There is no shortage of applicant doctors in KZN and most are prepared to work anywhere in the province. All KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and his department have to do is make sure that employing more doctors becomes a priority over spending money at church events, such as the recent one in Illembe where R500 000 was spent, instead of complaining incessantly that there are no funds. The DA will be asking the MEC some hard questions. It is hoped the answers are swift and do not attempt to hide the real situation. Dr Imran Keeka, MPL DA KZN spokesperson on Health

Align agriculture with world trends WE need an exit strategy for dairy farmers. Over the past 20 years, dairy farmers have come under increasing pressure in South Africa. This is in line with global trends. Dairy consumption fell by £210 million (R3,54 billion) in 2016 in England. In fact, all animal agriculture saw shrinking profits and market share. The biggest areas of agricultural growth were in plantbased alternatives, up by £145 million. Consumers no longer buy the old marketing strategies. The dangers of dairy are becoming widely known. Figures showing countries with the highest dairy consumption having the highest rates of osteoporosis have shaken old myths

about strong teeth and bones. We cannot allow our dairy farmers to be left behind in a dying industry. The Midlands boasts some of the highest potential agricultural land in the world. We need to find ways to redirect agriculture to align with global trends. The idea that people not buying dairy is a threat to farmers and their labour is false. People are still buying food. This food doesn’t come from accountants and plumbers, but from farmers, who have recognised the shift in consumer choice, and adjusted accordingly. James Speirs

current owners, the Mandelas and the Zumas, are above the law? In accordance with the insolvency laws, a bankrupted company is obliged to surrender its assets to pay the creditors. Numerous, lucrative companies owned by the Mandelas and Zumas, have not been seized to pay the starving miners, who received no salaries for seven years. Instead of subsidising and supporting hardened criminals in our prisons, reintroduce the death sentence to remove the scourge from our country. Use the funds to support the unpaid miners, who seek a meal and shelter. Note - if a person seeks to be politically correct, rather remain silent. Dr L.J. Peltz Ramsgate

Barricade the lagoon WITH the water test results for the Uvongo lagoon now released and the Ugu municipal manager quoted in the local press saying the lagoon was “very, very highly contaminated with E. coli”, I contacted Sbu Nzimande, the acting municipal manager of the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, requesting him to immediately barricade the lagoon, place more “swimming prohibited” signs and place a law enforcement officer there to pre-

vent the public from swimming in the lagoon. He agreed to this additional safety measures as swimming was prohibited there a long time ago. The municipality will also do their own water test of the sea before taking a decision to close the beach or not. George Henderson Ward 19 Councillor

Filthy behaviour is appalling ON 1 January I was obliged to wade through filth and litter to reach the entrance of a supermarket in Shelly Beach. Taxis filled the parking to capacity. Loud, discordant sounds with the monotonous beats and shrieks, bombarded my ears. I refuse to lower my standards to acknowledge this disgusting behaviour as acceptable. In accordance with an English idiom, pigs are equated with dirt. Yet pigs allocate a section of the sty for egestion. I have been forced to witness urinating along Marine Drive, even against the electricity boxes. The violent uprisings in prisons have been attributed to overcrowding. Our facilities are inadequate to accommodate our law breakers, which is an indication of the criminality character of South Africans. Despite our Constitution and the Constitutional Court to regulate the judicial system, Aurora Mines have failed to remunerate the miners. Prior to its takeover, these mines were functional and lucrative. How is it possible that the

Well sir, the permission-giver, why did you not hire portable toilets, make sure there were safe entry for other shoppers or at least set up a few rules – not that it would be followed. On this day, to mention a few, the amended Public Health Act 12 of 2013, Police Service Act 68 of 1995, Liquor Act 59 of 2003, Regulations of Gatherings Act 205 of 1993, and laws, including public indecency and many more, were disrespected but nothing was done about it. It is time that the people of Margate start acting like respectful citizens. This is a holiday destination of which we have always been proud. How to find us: How to find us:

Have they no pride? WHAT has happened to the people of South Africa? What has happened to law and order in this country? The chaotic gathering of crowds at the Hibiscus Mall on New Year’s is a perfect example of people not caring for themselves, never mind their fellow countrymen. I am sure that people from other First World countries or even Second and Third World countries would call it “barbarism”. People running into Checkers stark naked, drunk, swearing, others urinating against the pillars inside the shopping centre, others urinating, vomiting or emptying their stomachs on the sidewalks. It is disgusting, disgraceful, disrespectful and makes one ashamed to think that those are the people you have to respect in the workplace the next day. To face them not showing shame and disgust. If you were one of those how do you feel about it - proud? There is a hospital situated not even 400 metres from the mall, did anybody even worry about the effect all the noise had on patients? Surely not. When the police were asked why they were

Liewe vriend.

REYWATER is the recycling of bath, shower, hand basin and laundry water, which can then be used to irrigate your garden. This is especially relevant for South Africans as they have to contend with low rainfall, water shortages and water restrictions. By reusing bath and laundry water, homeowners can keep their gardens looking healthy - even in times of drought - without spending an extra dime on their water bill. Plus, greywater also contains nutrients derived from the residues and soaps in the water, which feed and nourish the soil to produce lush plants. Do not, however, use water waste from the kitchen sink as this contains fat content that will damage your garden. Greywater systems A greywater system can be as simple as using a bucket to carry the waste water outside, or as complicated as having the greywater piped directly outside using a tank and pump. According to Water Wise, a simple bucket system can be used to transport the greywater, by hand, from the bathroom to garden. It is the cheapest system, but is inconvenient and increases the possibility of contact and contamination between the greywater and people carrying the bucket. Homeowners can also make one themselves by connecting a pipe from the outlet of their bathroom to a hose pipe. Alternatively, homeowners can invest in a system that connects the greywater to the outlet pipes of the bathroom where the greywater will

be collected or stored in a tank. The water will run through a hair and lint filter first before it is pumped out through irrigation pipes to the garden. With any greywater system, it is important that you use “garden friendly” products and detergents that do not contain any salts, boron or bleach. If you intend on using the water to feed a vegetable garden, it is important that the system has a filter. How much does a grey water system cost? According to Erika Theron from Rainwater Harvesting, a small, entry-level system that works instantly (no storage) could cost around R13 000 (fully installed), while a system that offers European Bathing filtration standards could cost R110 000-plus. She says in between these there are different options that homeowners can choose from. Greywater tolerant plants In general, tough drought-tolerant plants will do best with greywater irrigation watering. Generally, greywater is alkaline, so avoid using it on plants like azaleas, begonias, gardenias, hibiscus, camellias and ferns. Avoid using it on fynbos and proteas too. Plants that flourish from greywater include olives, rosemary, bougainvillea, lavender, Cape honeysuckle, Italian cypress, bearded iris and petunias. To help these plants thrive, occasionally flush the plants with a bit of rainwater or tap water to remove the residue from the greywater. Greywater reuse guidelines Homeowners, who would like to use greywater in their garden, should be aware of the hygiene factors. Because greywater is not fresh, homeowners should apply the following to avoid the growth of bacteria and unpleasant odours: • Use the greywater within 24 hours. Storing the water any longer will result in a bad odour. • Minimise contact with greywater. • Use non-toxic cleaning agents and products where possible. • Do not allow your greywater to pool on the surface of the soil. Standing water will provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. • Do not use water from the kitchen or toilet. • Do not use laundry water that has been used to wash nappies. • Do not allow children or pets to drink or play in greywater. • Do not let greywater run into the swimming pool. • Do not use greywater if a family member or someone on the property has an infectious illness. - Property24.

A number of schools raised the bar this year, but it it wasn’t enough to make an impact on the overall pass rates.

Ugu District head of exams Nkosinathi Madadi said improvement is what the district is enjoying in the 2016 NSC results through tireless working of schools and the district. “In 2015 the district was at 60% and improved to 65% in 2016. A lot still needs to be done particularly in schools that are below 30%. “There is no school in the district that obtained zero percent. The school that obtained zero percent in 2015 obtained 80% in 2016,” said Madadi.

Proven electric hybrid drivetrains for halfton bakkies ALWYN VILJOEN

W

HILE South Africa ranks with Malaysia and South America as a top-selling bakkie market our buyers do not have much of a say in what drivetrains future bakkies should offer. That authority goes to the American buyers, who ensure that the Ford F250 is the overall top-selling vehicle in the U.S. And with demand for the as-yetunproven fuel cell Nikola One truck having netted the developer $3 billion (R42,2 billion) in deposits, any manufacturer with an eye on the American buyer will be offering pick-ups that just sip fuel. Enter XL Hybrids Incorporated, a company founded in 2009 by MIT alumni in Boston, Massachusetts, whose hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid-electric powertrains can be fitted to any of the major OEM platforms and have been proven to deliver on average 20% to 50% improvement in consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as 99,9% fleet uptime. XL Hybrids was recognised as one of the 2014 World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies 2014 by Fast Company, and has buy-in from national fleets in the U.S.

The company now offers a plug-in hybrid system for half-ton bakkies, which it said in a statement, is an industry-first, fleet-ready solution, with deliveries to fleet customers scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2017. Clay Siegert, XL Hybrids’ co-founder and chief operating officer, said the technology will be the first plug-in solution that is available for tried and true commercial pick-up trucks for fleets today. He said XL Hybrids surveyed fleet managers to understand their most critical requirements and developed the new technology based on customer demand for hybrid electric plug-in technology on commercial work trucks from the leading OEMs. The new XLP solution will build on the platform product technology used on the company’s award-winning XL3 hybrid-electric powertrain, which has achieved more than 35 million road miles with over 99,9% vehicle uptime on Class 2-6 vehicles for major fleets since 2013. The XLP lithium battery pack will be over 10 kWh, and will accommodate Levels 1 and 2 charging using an industry-standard plug. Dr Edward Lovelace, XL Hybrids’

PRO-ACTIVE South Africa has created revolutionary technology that could drastically reduce the amount of time taken to issue an alert for a hijacked or stolen car. Pro-Active has an intelligence-sharing database that has the power to make this possible. According to the MD of Pro-Active, Ryno Schutte, it is a system which allows distribution of pre-loaded material on any hijacked or stolen vehicle using their website. “This information goes to 137 security service providers and enforcers. If your vehicle is taken from you, then you can enter information using your PC, or it uses GPS co-ordinates when using your smartphone, and within seven seconds that information is circulated. “When people are hijacked, from the time the hijackers leave, until the time the police come, until the time the info is circulated, at

“The launch of our XLP plug-in hybrid solution reaffirms XL Hybrids is the industry leader in fleet electrification solutions, and we are proud to have major customers already committed to support our product launch next year.” Like Tesla cars, the XLP hybrids will link to a cloud-based big data analytics

system, which measures MPG performance and reports carbon dioxide emissions reductions. The proprietary XL Link vehicle connectivity is a continuous data link from every vehicle, collecting millions of operational data points, allowing analysis and reports on key performance indicators.

least an hour lapses. Do you think that car is anywhere to be seen? It is gone, long ago,” says Schutte. “With this app everyone can equip themselves with the tools to respond to a hijacking as quickly as possible. It is an empowering app that could have a very powerful effect for the 40 victims of hijackings everyday in South Africa. “It is our civic duty to apprehend hijackers that much faster,” says Schutte. According to statistics, South Africa loses over R8,5 billion to vehicle theft and hijacking. Of the vehicles stolen, 57% are taken across the border, 36% filter back into South Africa as cloned vehicles, the rest land in chop shops. The contribution of real-time intelligence could help lower these statistics. The potential of this new technology is farreaching. “The effective distribution of information on vehicle theft and hijackings can even help lower the number of other crimes like house burglaries, armed robberies and cashin-transit heists.” This can benefit all South Africans as the arrest of suspects can have a snowball effect on other forms of crime and possibly save a life. Be financially fit this year >> Understanding your expenses means you can set realistic goals

O

NE of the most common new year’s resolutions when it comes to our money, is to simply work better with it. Be it to save more, budget better or buy less, we have the best intentions to secure a better financial future for ourselves. But, without a proper plan, the best intentions will remain just that. Follow our steps to be financially fit in 2017 and tick your money new year’s resolution off your list. • Draw up a monthly budget. Saving up for a big goal like a deposit for a new home or simply committing to paying off all your short-term debts means a bit of planning and dedication. Onalenna Disipi, a financial adviser with Discovery, says that drawing up a monthly budget will help you make provision for all your expenses and will allow you to find ways to start saving. Understanding your expenses means you can set realistic goals to reduce them and tackle any debt. “If you don’t know what you are spending your money on, try keeping a spending journal for a month or two. It can be as easy as keeping a notebook with you where you jot down every cent spent - including the daily cappuccino, occasional magazine or impromptu dinner. Doing this exercise will help you spot spending patterns and where you can potentially cut back. While R20 for your daily cappuccino does not seem like a lot, adding it up over a month comes to around R600, or R7 200 a year,” Disipi says. Keeping track of the small expenses can often result in significant savings. • Ditch debt. If you reduce your debt, you are less likely to be impacted by interest rates increases. So the first strategy to becoming financially fit is to ditch your debt. Make it a principle

Draw up a monthly budget. to borrow less than you can afford. Start by sticking to your budget and not resorting to credit when you want something. Understanding the pitfalls of instant gratification is an important step in getting the right attitude and mindset towards money. • Trim expenses. Perhaps the most fundamental of financial planning principles is to tailor your lifestyle under your earning power, and as you earn more, don’t just borrow more. “It’s important to be careful and cautious when borrowing money,” says Disipi. Overextending yourself can lead to significant problems if interest rates rise. Always leave a bit of a cushion in your budget to absorb the impact of any unforeseen expenses. A useful tip is to always have a bit of money left over in your account at the end of the month and to keep on building on that every month. It forms a good habit of not spending every cent you have and establishes a “planning-

for-a-rainy-day” mindset. • Pay off the most expensive debt first. Human nature highly favours instant gratification – paying off the least expensive debt not only frees up funds, but “small victories” also make you feel you are one step closer to achieving your goal – a great motivation to continue with the plan. Credit card debt, referred to as short-term debt, usually has the highest interest rates, which means it really eats into your income and ability to save. In the same way that compound interest works in your favour when saving, it works against you if you owe money. If you have multiple credit or store cards, you can tackle this debt by working out a plan to pay it off. • Take advantage of salary increases or bonuses and invest. Once your finances are on track and you are disciplined about sticking to your budget, you could start investing your salary increase or bonus. It is

tempting to splurge any salary increase or bonus. The better solution would be to use your increase or bonus wisely and invest this extra cash – especially if you already have a budget you can stick to. While this might be difficult to stick to for most people, a good way to start is to invest at least half of your increase or bonus, and use the rest to treat yourself. This helps you stay balanced and motivated to reach your financial goals. • See a financial adviser to draw up a retirement plan. Savings statistics show that South Africans are some of the worst savers in the world, especially when it comes to retirement savings. And most underestimate how much they will need to retire comfortably. The services of a financial adviser can be invaluable in helping you understand how you can save for retirement. “The key to ensuring longer-term financial stability is to set realistic sav-

CONTACT:

ings goals for retirement the moment you start working. This is important as the biggest asset you have is time – the positive effects of compound interest help grow money further, but you need to allow as much time as possible to achieve this. “Read about financial products and advice on planning for retirement, and then schedule an appointment with a financial adviser who can help you draw up an achievable retirement plan,” says Disipi. Also, as tempting as it may be to splurge your pension or provident fund upon resignation, remember there are tax implications when the money is in your hands; the best alternative is to preserve those funds until retirement. That’s almost killing three birds with one stone - not only are you saving tax it also gives you an opportunity to build a greater asset for retirement by earning compound interest on your funds and saves you the frustration of contributing more towards a retirement plan to make up for the funds withdrawn. • Check that you have enough life insurance to protect you and your family. Depending on your life stage, you may not be thinking about life insurance. The truth is that life insurance is not only important for parents with children or when you buy your first property, as accidents or illness can happen at any age. Even if you are single without any direct dependants, your death could create a financial burden for those close to you. You might not have a lot of debt, but having the right amount of life cover means your loved ones won’t be responsible for paying your financial obligations if you died unexpectedly. Also remember that being young, independent and healthy doesn’t mean you will never become disabled or severely ill. Disability and severe illness cover pay out a lump sum if you get an illness such as cancer or injure yourself permanently and can no longer work. You also might want to think about protecting your monthly income. Income protection pays out a regular income if you get sick or injured. This can help you maintain your current lifestyle without having to rely financially on family or friends. - Supplied.

OUTH Africa’s top golfing export, Lee-Anne Pace, will be targeting an unprecedented record when the South African Women’s Open heads to the South Coast for a fifth successive year from 26 to 27 January. Thanks to the support of the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Pace has the opportunity to extend her winning tally on the Sunshine Ladies Tour to 10 victories, but more significantly, she could become the first player on the women’s professional golf circuit in South Africa to win the national championship for a record third time. Pace owns nine titles on the Ladies European Tour and is a LPGA Tour winner, but the prospect of rewriting the history books has the two-time defending champion brimming with excitement. “Winning my first SA Women’s Open was incredibly special and making it two in a row last year was very exciting, but once I learnt that no one has won the SA Women’s Open three times, I knew that if the event returned in 2017, mine would be the first name on the entry list,” said Pace. “Besides winning Majors, any golfer will tell you that lifting the trophy at your national Open is the best feeling in the world. I am always motivated by statistics, so to have the chance to set a record entirely of my own is the ultimate challenge. “This is a very rare opportunity as I will only have this one shot at three successive victories, but it is exhilarating to stand on the brink of something so historic.” The 54-hole tournament, sanctioned by the WPGA of South Africa, will carry a purse of R250 000 and will be staged at San Lameer Country Club from 26 to 28 January.

It will be the third counting event for the 2017 Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies after the SuperSport Ladies Challenge and SA Women’s Masters. Pace ended the 2016 LPGA Tour season with a career-high 35th place ranking on the LPGA Tour Money List. She plans to take a break over the festive season and come out firing next year. A victory on the South Coast could set the tone for another record-setting season for Pace. “The last two editions of the SA Women’s Open fell in November, but this new date is fantastic in terms of my schedule for next year,” said the three-time Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies champion. “I love to come home to support the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the 2017 schedule allows me to start my season here at home. It’s also fantastic that we will have two events before we head to San Lameer, because that strengthens my chances, I will be super competitive for the SA Women’s Open.” Mayor, Councillor Nomusa Mqwebu, said the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is proud to have been a key facilitator in the resurgence in women’s professional golf in South Africa. “The SA Women’s Open has become a very significant attraction in this region from an economic, tourism and sport development point of view since we first partnered with World Sports Promotions to bring back the SA Women’s Open to the national schedule in 2012,” Councillor Mqwebu said. Entrance to the 2017 SA Women’s Open is free and highlights packages covering all three days will be flighted on SuperSport and SABC 3. Broadcast dates and times to be advised. - Supplied.
