MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. MARGATE car-wash owner is concerned that Ugu District Municipality is not punishing businesses that don’t comply with water restrictions that were announced earlier this year. In response to the current drought and water shortage, Ugu forbade the use of high-pressure

hoses to wash cars. “Although it has had a negative impact on our business, we heeded the municipality’s call and stopped using hoses,” said the carwash owner who asked not to be named. She says they have been using buckets ever since. “Why should we comply while others are allowed to do as they please? This is very unfair,” she said. At a car wash in the Port Shep-

stone CBD, it is business as usual because they have never stopped using high-pressure hoses even when restrictions were announced. The owner, who said he fears victimisation if his identity is revealed, said using a high-pressure hose to wash a car uses less water than when using a bucket. “I compiled all this information and sent it to Ugu so they can see for themselves that using high-

pressure hoses saves water.” He said he has never heard from Ugu after sending the information to them. Despite several reports that some businesses were not complying with the restrictions, >> Ugu said STORY nobody CONTINUED has been ON PAGE fined. 2

Missing woman sought

HE nanny, accused of kidnapping two Albersville children, was granted “free bail” at Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The case was postponed to 15 May for further investigation. Although withdrawn and traumatised, the two children who went missing last Monday, were returned safely to their family last Wednesday afternoon.

MARGERET Elizabeth Theunissen (32) was reported missing at Port Shepstone SAPS when she failed to return home on Wednesday 13 April. She was last seen that morning leaving her residence at Torwood Crescent, Umbango, Port Shepstone, when she allegedly went to Marburg Clinic. Police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid said Theunissen was last seen was wearing a pink T-shirt, grey jeans and pink slippers. Anyone who may have seen her must contact Warrant Officer Johan Maree on 079 500 0728 or Warrant Officer Rams Ramphul on 079 500 1251. Supplied.

The siblings were found at a house in Louisiana with their nanny, Clodate Plyman. The community of Louisiana and the area’s community policing forum assisted the SAPS with the search. The children’s mother, Magrietha Nuwegeld said Shabbeena (3) had nightmares, while Ali (2) slept through the night. “Shabbeena kept waking up and crying throughout the night. I had to comfort her. “When I ask them questions about the ordeal, they become withdrawn

Plyman apparently went to visit her boyfriend in Louisiana and took the children with her. “I had no idea that she had a boyfriend. When I asked her why she took the children she couldn’t answer me. The boyfriend was not at home when police found them,” said Nuwegeld. According to Nuwegeld, Plyman said her boyfriend held her and the

children against their will on Tuesday. They were apparently not allowed to leave the house. “On the Wednesday when they were found, they were not locked in the house. “She [nanny] could have brought the children home. She had no answer why she could not come home on Wednesday,” said Nuwegeld. Plyman came from the Eastern Cape and was employed by Nuwegeld about a month ago. She was instructed not to take the children anywhere. “I’m just so happy that my children have been returned and they were not hurt,” said Nuwegeld.

Metered taxi operations suspended

Double murder on Margate beach over girl

WITH recent disputes over rights to ferry passengers by feuding metre taxi associations at Ryder Street in Port Shepstone, the police have upped their presence to ensure that operations remain suspended. Last week Sizanani Meter Taxi Association operators demanded to take over the stand and that operations should continue. However, SAPS stopped them from doing so as instructed by the Hibiscus Coast Municipality. Sizanani spokesperson Snothi Nyathi said they are awaiting the final word from the municipality on whether they should continue with operations. Nyathi said the Ryder Street rank will remain closed until the day of the meeting scheduled by the municipality on 26 April. Sizanani and Sheppy Cabs will not be operating on Ryder Street.

A FAMILY on the Margate beach on Saturday said they were shocked to see two young men stabbing each other to death. Lungile Mkhize of Gamalakhe was on the beach with friends and family and witnessed a group of young men carrying a large knife chasing a boy. “Our hearts jumped from shock and we screamed at the top of our lungs telling them to stop. “We then saw a young boy behind the group holding his neck with blood gushing out of his mouth. He then took a couple of steps and was on the ground,” said Mkhize. Mkhize said they tried calling an ambulance but could not get hold of one. One of the boy’s friends tried to stop the bleeding, but it was too late, he was already dead. Margate police officers have confirmed the incident and after questioning it discovered that the fight was over a girl. Captain Gerald Mfeka said when police arrived at 5.25pm after receiving a call about two dead people, they questioned a witness who saw everything. Mfeka said not far from where the first body was found police were told that the man who had been fighting with the first deceased had also died. “Margate detectives are investigating a double murder,” said Captain Mfeka. Mfeka said both bodies of Samkelo Ngcungama (25) and Bongumusa Vincent Shezi (30) were taken to Port Shepstone State Mortuary.

ges with car washes and have issued compliance notices. “We however, do not have the necessary staff to police this matter. “We are also sensitive to the plight of the car washes from an economical perspective and are looking for mutually beneficial solutions,” says Zama. Restrictions in the district remain in force until further notice.

Cannes awaits local awardwinning film maker LOCAL award-winning owner of Sollywood Films, Senzo Zindela, is heading to France to attend the famous annual event that attracts major film makers in the world, the Cannes Film Festival. He brought the Safta Golden Horn Award home last month for establishing the Ugu Film Festival. This award has opened many doors for him, putting the district in the spotlight, leading to his recognition as one of the best film producers in KZN. He will be going to Cannes as part of the KZN delegation. Cannes takes place from 11 to 22 May. Film experts, SABC and e.tv series production houses that produce Rhythm City, Skeem Saam, had approached Zindela with proposals to produce a new TV series in the area. Some of the famous fa-

ces that star in the South African TV and film industry are now partnering with him to do developmental work in their area as Zindela has done on the South Coast. Zindela and the Arts, Film and Video Forum have a long -term plan to transform the South Coast into, not just a tourists destination, but to a preferred film and arts destination as it has all the resources at hand. Local businesses that offer accommodation, transportation, suitable scenic locations, make up, casting, camera equipment rentals, editing studios etc. are invited to submit their details to Hilton O’Dwyer at afvf.mail@gmail.com for inclusion in a database to offer the film industry a full range of services. A discounted package for film

makers coming to the coast will be put together using details received to attract business. Individuals or businesses with suitable filming locations are requested to submit high resolution photos as soon as possible so the chosen locations can be added in the brochure to be utilised to market the area by Zindela on his visit to France. - Supplied.

ITH 219 comments, 121 reactions, almost over 200 shares and engaging with more than 66 000 Facebook users, a story about SAPS destroying 6 500 dagga trees in Umzinto has gained popularity on the Fever Facebook page. The comments however, are not of praise for the SAPS on their sterling work, rather it tells them to “fight real crime” and to “find real criminals”, sometimes in harsh words. Nearly all the comments stated it would boost the country’s economy if cannabis was legalised and the police were just looking for publicity by circulating the press release. A reader commented (sic): “Captain Vincent Pandarum clearly needs to do some research!

Which families and lives have been destroyed by dagga? I cannot think of any personally. Alcohol on the other hand has destroyed by far the most families and lives than all other drugs combined (legal and illegal). Why not rather focus your limited law enforcement resources on combating the scourge of alcohol abuse and violence in our society? Oh no wait you can’t or won’t because it’s legal, socially acceptable and the government makes so much money on its sale. This is the height of hypocrisy!” That comment gained 199 likes. “If the cops would stick to patrolling the streets and not gardening this country would be a safer place for all!!” earned 105 likes. Others spoke about how cannabis helped with pain relief for those with cancer and even osteoarthritis. One person even created a meme from the picture posted with the story that SAPS is now offering garden services. Like the South Coast Fever on Facebook to see what the hype is all about.

OAD users will have to use alternative routes in the Margate CBD on 23 and 24 April during Africa Bike Week, which is from 23 April to 1 May. On some roads only event permit holders will be allowed access and those who did not apply by 15 April will not be allowed access. South Coast Tourism warns that those found in the vicinity without permits will be fined. Vehicles found in the area left unattended will be towed away at owners risk and cost. Residents in the precinct were also told to get permits in order

Alternative routes during Africa Bike Week >> Those found in the vicinity without permits will be fined for them to get access to their home. Tammy Frayne of Africa Bike Week said from 26 April, Panorama Parade will be closed to all vehicles except event permit holders while they set up for the event. For the duration of the event Panorama Parade will remain closed “No cars will be able to access this road from 28 April to 1 May.”

No news on chicken farm CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com INVESTIGATIONS into the Southport chicken farm are at a critical stage and the SPCA says it cannot divulge any information on the matter at this stage. “The investigation is at a critical stage and we can unfortunately not supply any information on the case at this stage,” said manager Michael Muller. Muller and his team received a complaint two weeks ago that chickens were left to starve at Wandering Star Farms. Last week Muller said the unhealthy chickens, which were ridden with disease, will be culled. It is unknown how many chickens were culled since more information cannot be rendered. The last consignment of feed was delivered on 23 March. The owner of the farm was given R15 million by government in 2010 to start the farm. The main purpose of the chickens was for egg-laying, but some were slaughtered and sold as “live”.

On Thursday 28 April, from 8am until 5pm on Sunday 1 May, Panorama Parade will be accessible to motorcycles only. Event permit holders access will be available between 11pm and 8am.” Traffic flow changes have been made - Panorama Parade will adopt a one way (north to south) from Monday 25 April to Monday 2 May.

Remington will not be affected by the road closures, however, vehicles can turn left, but will have to exit via the post office lane. Vehicles will be diverted via Finnis Road. She said businesses within the area will be affected and will have to make alternate arrangements for deliveries during the four days of the event.

“As this is the eighth year that ABW is taking place in Margate and as ABW organisers we are of the view that most businesses are aware of this,” said Frayne She said other businesses situated outside the event venue will not be affected, including holiday letting places. “On the day of the mass ride, which starts at Shelly Centre, road users are warned that road closures will be implemented from 10.30am until the end of the ride.”

Child welfare adoption services now accredited PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com PORT Shepstone Child Welfare manager Sagree Naicker said they are now fully accredited to offer permanent adoption services after the organisation was awarded accreditation by Department of Social Development. Naicker said for a child protection organisation to be accredited they require a social worker with special skills. Naicker said they provided adoption services before, however, they were stopped due to non-accreditation. “We are very happy to run the service again. “When a child is legally adopted there are many benefits that come with it,” said Naicker. Port Shepstone Child Welfare is the only organisation on the South Coast that has been accredited for this service. The adoption service is available to anyone, but will be charged on a means test, depending on income per applicant “This basically means our services will be accessible to all races and income groups. What is important is to get placement for the children in a home that is loving and comfortable for them.” Naicker said they already have parents on their care roll, who are in the process of giving permanent residence to some children in their care. King said this is a very social initiative in an environment where everyone can relax and enjoy “small talk”. The staff take turns to bring eats to share with heir visitors, and last Thursday someone donated a cake for the occasion. Hospice invites people to join its every Thursday from 10am until 2pm.

OUND TABLERS from all corners of southern Africa descended on Margate last week to attend the Round Table Southern Africa annual general meeting at Margate Hotel. Activities started on Thursday and lasted the weekend, culminating in the induction of the new president, Rupert Niebuhr, who took over from Spidey Knepscheld. Past president and convener of the AGM, Leon Garbarde, said it was an honour to be this year’s convener and host fellow Tablers, who came from as far as Namibia. “Business and the town of Margate have been very supportive. They offered us certain discounts and we are truly grateful for that,” said Garbarde. There are 143 active Tables with 1 115 Tablers, of which 650 came to Margate.

HE Ezingolweni Taxi Association gave back to the community on Wednesday donating more than 140 uniforms to 28 schools in the area. The association and community members gathered at Mbeni community hall for the handover.

Mr Malishe of Ezingolweni Taxi Association said the aim of the uniform handover is to give back to their supporters, the children, parents and the community as a whole. “Ezingolweni Taxi Association has never been associated with good deeds, only taxi wars and everything else. “Today we want to change the

mindset of our community by giving back to them,” said Malishe. He said it is part of their constitution as an association to give back to the community, saying that the taxi industry has been “born again”. The 28 schools that benefitted from the handover are schools in Kwaxolo, KwaNyuswa, Mthimude and Izingolweni.

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM A FRIEND of mine is the owner of a well known confectionery and energy bar manufacturing company which a few years ago was the brand sponsor of a canoeing event in the Eastern Cape. Once the event was over, his inflatable finishing arch, worth some R17 000, fell off the returning truck and was to all intents and purposes lost in rural Eastern Cape. In fact this was not to be the case. An elderly Xhosa woman found the large bundle and for about two years could not locate the owners of the item until her grandson, who had a laptop, helped via use of the internet. Once she had the contact details for the company she contacted them to inform them that their arch was safe and sound and in her lounge. Much relieved the owners sent a vehicle to collect the inflatable. They also took along a substantial gratuity for the lady in appreciation of her finding their lost asset and facilitating its collection. Now here is the good part - this lady had previously established a

An honest act has an amazing effect on how people recommend places. Simple goodnesses are worth far more than one can imagine. Sadly the converse is also true so we as an organisation strive to ensure that our standards driven members act in an ethical manner towards our visitors and the public in general. I like hearing stories like this as it inculcates a faith in the human spirit. Honesty and integrity can be the backbone of how we conduct our lives and in the case of tourism our business. Umgeni Water Laboratory conducted various tests on the supply and has confirmed that the water has been cleared of all oil and grease content. The abstraction of water to the plant, which was redirected to our offstorage dam in Bhobhoyi, has since been reverted. It is our view, as the municipality, that water is life and as a caring water services authority, the municipality will continue testing water for quality assurance for the next two weeks through Umgeni Water Laboratory. Following the internal preliminary investigations, which have revealed that a sand mining company that operates along Umzimkhulu River had spilt oil into the river leading to our abstraction point. The municipality will be taking legal action against those involved. Chicken abuse is a crime I THOUGHT I was dreaming when I read about those poor chickens that are suffering cruelty and abuse. What did they do to deserve this? I also need R15 million to start a legitimate business, but it’s a pity I don’t have friends in the ANC. This person has committed a heinous crime. He should also be locked up and left to starve just like he did to those chickens. I know that’s just wishful thinking, because nothing will happen to him. Vinny Benjamin

fever and an ear infection like most people in our complex, even those who don’t swim. Children are sick with bleeding ears. My blood pressure also goes up suddenly, among other problems I have. A lady I know of died of a stroke

on Sunday. I also had to fight a stroke because of high fever, while my mother-in-law also has the same symptoms. She has been continuously ill since she moved here three years ago. Even epilepsy can occur with high

fever. I woke up again the other morning with fever and had to fight it with vitamin c. Can this be part of bacteria in the water? I’m afraid my holiday friends will get ear infections as well.

Investigate vehicle licence registration YOUR article on the exorbitant car licences refers (“KZN puts squeeze on car licences”, 14 April). The KZN population are being taken to the cleaners. Just check how many heavy vehicles on the South

Coast have MP number plates, why? I have a small hatch, which will now cost about R700 to licence. I have registered my vehicle in Mpumalanga at a cost of R275. I think a higher authority or ombudsman should in-

vestigate this, not government. Vehicle registration should be the same throughout South Africa. Mpumalanga is leading the way. J.A. Kolas

Twowheelers, behave yourselves SOME time ago I wrote about hooligan bikers and what they must do, and not take innocent lives with them on the pillion seat. One hooligan in question, who was responsible for taking the life of a young woman, and mother, has finally wiped himself out. My sympathies go to the family (not his friends) for this unnecessary

sorrow and expense. So please, fellow bikers, behave I’m a biker as well and I have cir- yourselves, and safe riding - Africa cumnavigated the border of South Bike Week is upon us soon. Africa. I did thousands of kilometres Two Wheels and got home without so much as a Southport scratch on my bum. Why because I’m not a hooligan biker.

Real farmers don’t get help I KNOW the way things are done has changed, but can someone tell me how a government gives a person R15 million to start a farm and not check if the money is used wisely? I know of farmers, real farmers, who struggle to get even a R100 000 loan from government. This man failing to buy feed or even provide water for the chicken shows that this “comrade” was gifted the money by his cronies in high places. I hope as many of those chickens as possible can be saved and not culled. They don’t deserve this. PJ de la Rey Scottburgh

Editorial comment IT seems there are some people who still think that rules are made to be broken. This week the Fever established that some people and businesses do not adhere to the water restrictions and regulations imposed by Ugu District Municipality. This was done to ensure that we save the little water we have in this drought we are experiencing. The municipality feels that this does not need to be policed as we are all adults and are aware of the water crisis. We urge everyone to be good citizens and

preserve water. In the recent weeks, two stories gained tremendous popularity on Facebook - the Southport chicken farm and SAPS destroy 6500 dagga plants in Umzinto recently. We are still waiting to hear what will happen to the owner of the farm. We hope he will be tried and prosecuted for cruelty to animals. Log on to Facebook, like the South Coast Fever page and find out exactly why these and other stories received so much interaction online.

IBISCUS Kennel Club held a successful agility show on 10 April in perfect weather on a field that was newly cut and green. This is the stuff that makes a dog handler smile because life is so good. We thank Barbara Egan and Tracy Norton for the interesting courses and for giving up their day to judge. Judges offer up their time to help make our day a success while their own dogs stay at home. Thank you to the committee and members who assisted with the running of the show and to the handlers who participated. On a personal note, please be aware of your dog`s health and take note of any changes in their behaviour or eating patterns. Also check their stools regularly as by being aware you could save your dog`s life. The scribe was very fortunate to detect a change in her dog timeously and paid her vet a visit. Jodie had billary and is now on time out for two weeks. As is so often the case we did not notice any ticks but one had infected her days before. We welcome new members who have joined the club during the month with their young dogs. Enjoy your training each Saturday knowing that you are doing the responsible thing but be warned your dogs will know

is doing exceptionally well with five firsts with qualifications. Gaby Frey and Scooby are still in the top echelon with three firsts and three second places. Sheldene and Bernice Smit with Mindy achieved two firsts and a second and Bernice and Chloe a second place. Anne Shaw and Romulus are proud of their second place, but the cherry on the cake was Bondi, who is so fast, and her first, followed by a second place. Ninette Smith runs four dogs, all very different as large dogs handle a course differently to small dogs. Her pack did exceptionally well and we have little Swish who is still being a terrible two at times with two first places, one with a QC Sparkle with three seconds and two third places. This is Ninette`s steady dog. Glitz achieved a first. Sharon Derman was delighted with her two little Yorkies as Minkie, who just manages to clear the hurdles went home with a first with QC and Charlie with a second. It was good to see Bily-Anne Engelbrecht and Gunner entering. This young pair have youth, long legs, enthusiasm and a wonderful bond which is so obvious as they “gun” round the course. A well deserved first and two

second places. Karen Salhus, unfortunately, injured herself on the canopy of her vehicle and had to take herself off to hospital for stitches but not before her and Kajun achieved one first place. Get well soon Karen. Last but most certainly not least we say congratulations to Beryl Verwoerdt and Spice on their placing as they have not been training for months, as well as Linda Livesey and Dexi. These two both took home third places. Hibiscus Kennel Club is certainly not all about agility as we also have some very clever Carting dogs as we proved in Port Elizabeth earlier this month. Congratulations to Sue McCay and Gita her GSD who brought home provincial colours with her 99% and 98%. She was also nominated weekend overall winner. Renate Haussmann and Banshee entered their first show as a carting team and scooped first place followed by a second place at their second show. They were also novice winners of the weekend very well done. For more information, contact Sharon Derman on 073 601 4622 or Jenny Robertson on 083 250 4253. Supplied.

Ja, en natuurlik dra oefening, ‘n gesonde dieet, positiewe denke, opbouende verhoudings, ensovoorts by tot jou gesonde funksionering as mens.

- Verskaf.

"Hi my name is Yogesh Naidoo and I suffered badly from severe gout, mainly in my big toe. I also battle with my joints, suffering pain from past injuries & operations. I want to share my Lifetones story with you.

A while ago, my wife walked past the health shop at La Lucia Mall & saw a poster on the window advertising Lifetones. After getting more information from the store, she purchased a bottle for me. I promise you, it was so quick! I stopped suffering from gout and I have not had an attack in ages. My shoes actually became looser for me because the water retention has stopped and I've lost weight too. My skin looks clearer and I feel great. Many people have asked what I am taking because they can see the difference. I am also a diabetic, diagnosed late in life and I take insulin. Fortunately I can take Lifetones in conjunction with my insulin and it does not affect the diabetes medications. I have referred some of my family members to Lifetones and they have seen great results too. My brother in Johannesburg suffers from arthritis in the knees even though he goes to gym & is active. Lifetones has helped his arthritis. My mum has also suffered from severe arthritis after a bad fall, and Lifetones has helped ease her pair and give her some relief. Lifetones has really helped p us all: try y it for yourself y and you'll see!" ORIGINAL

MEMORABLE Moments South Coast KZN does exactly what it’s name suggests - makes moments memorable for those who need assistance. Lee Jackson started her cause in 2014 when she noticed that many young women did not have money to attend their matric farewell. She then appealed to locals to donate dresses, shows, accessories and the like through her Facebook page, Memorable Moments South Coast. “Every year without fail there is a need for matric farewell dance outfits. Some can afford to either have theirs made or even hire expensive outfits, but what about those who don’t have the means?” asked Jackson. She said she noticed this reality after starting her business, Glory Designs, in 2007. “Sadly the cost of living is just too high and many parents can’t afford to splash out on a dress and the other items needed for a matric farewell,” she said. Jackson now has 70 dresses, shoes, accessories and a few suits which enables many young women and men to attend their farewell.

“Sometimes there are adjustments that need to be done. I charge a small fee for this so that dry cleaning costs are met,” said Jackson. A refundable deposit of R300 is charged and then paid back on condition that the outfits, shoes and accessories are returned undamaged. “I charge a R50 fee for the cleaning,” she said. An extra charge is involved for shoes and accessories. A manicure and make-up is also made possible through Cheryl Thain from Makeup Artistry by Cheryl and Lisa Prins from LM Beauty, who sponsor vouchers to add that extra special touch. “It would be fantastic if I could get someone on board to do hair as well as transport and whatever else is needed to make that day special,” said Jackson.

Buying property with your partner I

21 April 2016

F you’re going to buy a home with your partner, you might want to sign on the dotted line, just in case. Nothing says “commitment” like getting a joint bond. Combining resources means being able to afford a

bigger apartment or house, or a home in an area that might otherwise be out of your financial reach - it’s somewhat of a win-win situation. South Africa is seeing a growing trend of buyers entering the property

South Coast

market in joint-ownership partnerships, and while some may prefer to avoid this, it does offer many people greater living opportunities. But, remember that careful planning is required and you’ll need to draw up a contract that you both agree on. Now, drawing up a contract of property co-ownership may not be the most romantic way to

begin this journey, but see it as an opportunity to put down, in writing, how you want to deal with various hypothetical circumstances now while you’re both happy. Once this is done, you can file the document away, and, if all goes according to plan, you will never have to look at it again. So what do you need to put in this contract? Property24 has a few helpful hints for you: When drawing up a contract of coownership, it is always advisable to have your agreement checked by an attorney to ensure all aspects comply with the South African law. The agreement should specify: • Who will be responsible for the initial payments, such as the deposit and transfer fees and how these costs will be split between both parties. • The amounts that each person is responsible for paying on an ongoing basis. These include bond payments, rates and levies as well as any maintenance that needs to be done to the property. • What proportion each person will

own of the property. • Who is allowed to occupy the property. • How the proceeds from the sale of the property should be split. • What needs to be done if one party wishes to sell their portion of the property. • What happens to the property and ownership in the property if the relationship ends, or in the event of the death or incapacity of one of the parties. • How the agreement may be terminated. Always be aware that the property may not be absolutely ideal for either one or both parties, or what you might have originally had in mind. There will be moments where differences of opinion will be voiced, but if you’re willing to communicate and compromise, you’re well on your way to taking this to a whole new level of commitment. With these points taken care of, you can relax and get swept up in the excitement of this new home you share. - Property24.

Setsuna set to take design week by STORM >> The opentop twoseater will be the focus of Toyota’s first appearance at the Milan Design

I

T’S a no brainer that modern day Milan in Italy has become synonymous with style, which makes it the perfect city to launch Toyota latest design marvel concept – Setsuna. To call it a “design marvel” is no exaggeration, as it is a drivable car that is predominantly made from wood. The open-top two-seater will be the focus of Toyota’s first appearance at the Milan Design Week (12 – 17 April). The reason to use wood as the primary material for Setsuna’s construction was to express the notion that love grows as time passes, and changes in colour and feel in direct response to the love and care shown to it. The Setsuna symbolises how cars undergo a

gradual transformation over the years, as if absorbing the aspirations, memories and emotions of multiple generations of a family. With the Setsuna concept, Toyota is expressing the notion that, as a family accrues time and experiences together with their car, lovingly caring for it and passing it on to the next generation, that car will acquire a new type of value that only the members of that family can appreciate. The car’s name – Setsuna, meaning “moment” in Japanese – was chosen to reflect that people experience precious, fleeting moments together with their cars. Toyota believes that, over time, these collective moments make their cars irre-

placeable to their owners. However, the Setsuna is not a piece of furniture – it is a fully functioning car, although not road-legal. For this reason, different types of wood were chosen for specific parts of the vehicle – including Japanese cedar, with its vivid grain and flexibility for the exterior panels; strong and rigid Japanese birch for the frame; hard-wearing Japanese zelkova for the seats; and smooth-textured castor aralia for the seats. The panels feature different grain patterns in the cedar, achieved with straight and cross-cutting of the raw timber, creating attractive contrasts. The concept of an “accumulation of

than large sections of body. It should then be possible for owners to identify areas of the car where remedial work has been done by hand, adding to the memories being passed down. On design, Kenji Tsuji, the Toyota engineer overseeing development of the Setsuna, says: “The completed body line of the Setsuna expresses a beautiful curve reminiscent of a boat. We would also like the viewer to imagine how the Setsuna will gradually develop a complex and unique character over the years. The car includes a 100year meter that will keep time over generations, and seats that combine functional beauty with the gentle hue of the wood.” - Supplied

moments” is expressed through the vehicle’s radial, circular emblem. While giving the impression of a blooming flower, the design also evokes the appearance of a clock that shows each individual moment. It is a symbol of hope that both family and car will grow together, just as trees grow larger and stronger ring by ring. While it’s also worth noting that there were no screws or nails used to assemble the Setsuna, its body comprises 86 handmade panels. Considerable thought was given to the design and creation of the panels, each of which offers unique changes as the car ages. If repairs become necessary, individual panels can be replaced rather

THE South Coast Warriors were given their new kit at a function at Douglas Mitchell sports ground recently. Sponsors were given certificates of appreciation and thanked for their tremendous support, albeit in the tough economic climate. We greatly appreciate everyone’s support.” Van Tonder said Warriors also appreciated the support of spectators who come to watch games and cheer them on. “Spectator support is also important. HE third installment in a series of boxing tournaments, hosted by Wild Coast Sun, was another thriller. Dubbed “War on the Shore 3”, the Friday evening sold-out affair was a clear indication that Wild Coast is fast establishing itself as an ideal boxing venue. Marcel Botha had an easy fight against Trinity Mhlongo in their middleweight encounter. Botha, trained by his father, former IBF heavyweight champion Francois “White Buffalo” Botha, stopped Mhlongo in the third round with a TKO. In a lightweight fight, Brendon Naudé cruised to a unanimous victory against Luvuyo Msamo. David Rajuli, who received much

cheering from the crowd, stopped Xolisa Kana in the fourth round of their junior lightweight encounter. Heavyweight hard-hitter Ruann Visser didn’t even break a sweat as he disposed of Paul Mukele from the Democratic Republic of Congo barely a minute into the first round. Special guests at the event included former WBC Super middleweight champion, Thulani “Sugarboy” Malinga and Irvin Buhlalu, former South African lightweight champion.
