MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. ON Sunday afternoon, a bakkie driven by two suspected foreign nationals, veered off the road in Marburg and crashed into the concrete fence of a pri vate residence. The incident happened on Bucking ham Road. Witnesses said after the car crashed, the drivers were seen changing seats before the arrival of police. No in juries were reported.

The accident scene on Buckingham Road in Marburg on Sunday.

House robbers sentenced in Sheppie court TWO men were sentenced to several years behind bars at Port Shepstone Regional Court recently after being found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and othe charges. Initially three men - Bheki Duma, Siyabonga Sifiso Mazubane and Sthembhele Michael Mkhize - were arrested after the robbery, but Duma was acquitted on all charges. Mazubane was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and Mkhize was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the same charge. Mkhize received a further two years for receiving stolen property and three years for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The case dates back to July 2013 when the three men barged in on a domestic worker and a child left in her care in Sea Park. The men pointed a firearm at both the little boy and the domestic worker and then tied the victims with electric cords while they ransacked the house and fled with stolen property. A short while later, members from K9 unit in Port Shepstone arrested the suspects not far from the scene. One of the suspects fired shots at the police and he was shot in his leg by a police member, and arrested. Detective Warrant Officer Mack John processed the case docket. - Supplied.

NITY is the first principal of the ANC and voters must have confidence that the ANC has the history and capacity to solve the issues that South Africa is currently dealing with. These were the words of Ravi Pillay, MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, who addressed a small crowd at the political party’s preelection campaign at Port Shepstone Secondary School on Saturday. After his speech, Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan took the mic. Gordhan spoke about the ANC’s intentions for the county’s economy for the next five years. This included a national development plan which he said will see “more changes taking place” between now and 2030. “The plan is to create social justice so that everyone’s standard of living is improved and that everyone lives in dignity … in the next 20 years there should be no homeless or poor people and almost no unemployment. We have achieved a lot in the past 22 years, but it will take us another 30 to 40 years to improve the legacy Mandela and others have left behind,” said Gordhan. He said statistics showed a positive improvement in infrastructure, housing, water and sanitation in the country, adding that the plan was to also improve on these elements. The national development plan also aimed for children to receive a good education and to go to universi-

ty or obtain some formal qualification after schooling. ‘We must remember that not every child is equipped for university middle-sized companies, that drive the economy, must engage in internships through the government,” he said. Gordhan added that although these opportunities are available, entrepreneurs don’t often apply for these programmes through government as they feel there is too much red tape involved. “We want to expand hugely the number of small businesses and win market share, which will result in a stable economy. More people will invest and this will create jobs so that our young people are not exploited or

ERLEWOOD Primary School governing body members and the principal heard on Wednesday that the rebuilding of the school will start soon. The announcement was made at a meeting held by the Department of Education, the Coega Development Corporation and the contractor. The decision to rebuild the school has been a long time in coming because the DoE struggled to secure funds for the project. Jaya Pillay from the Department of Education chaired a meeting where stakeholders gave their views about the rebuilding of the school now that the con-

tract had been approved. The project will initially cost R38 million, however, an additional budget had been approved. Pillay said this day reminds him of the first meeting he had with the Merlewood community and the SGB who asked the DoE to do something about the school as the prefab classrooms were in a state of decay. “I thank principal Audrey Ryan for her persistence and I commend her for her patience.” Ryan said they had waited for 19 years for this day. “I would also like to assure the contractor that he [and his team] will be safe and we will pray for them every day.” Sphindile Ngcongo of Coega, project manager for the rebuild, said she is glad

the day had finally arrived. “I would like to assure the community of Merlewood that we have competent people working on the project. “As the project manager I will be here as often as possible to make sure that all goes according to plan.” Hibiscus Coast mayor Nomusa Mqwebu asked the contractor if some of the workers would they be locals because as a municipal leader she has to answer to this and it is important that the project brings employment opportunities for locals. ANC activist, Selvan Chetty, seconded the mayor and said it has been everyone’s collective effort that the rebuild is in the final stage. The project is scheduled to take 18 month to complete.

MAHLE Ngaleka was crowned Miss Tourism Universe South Africa 2016 last Saturday in Mpumalanga - the first Miss Tourism Universe SA winner. The Miss Gamalakhe 2015, Ngaleka has now qualified to represent South Africa in Lebanon and Western Asia in another pageant later this year. Ngaleka walked away with a new car, a fully furnished house in Durban, cash, gadgets, travelling bags and a new wardrobe. Ngeleka said words failed her when her name was called out, naming her the winner. “Winning was proof that God is real

and my faith can move mountains. “I am happy that my life has now taken a new turn. I will expand my grandmother’s tuck shop and empower and inspire girls all over South Africa, not only in my community Ngaleka recently passed her driver’s licence. “The car came at a good time because I no longer have to worry about going for driving lessons.” Ngaleka said the other good news is that her grandmother won’t have to walk to the clinic. “My grandmother will no longer have to walk to the clinic. It also means I will be able to visit lots of places to see what change I can bring to those in need, and those who need that one

word that will change their lives and way of thinking,” she said Ngaleka recently opened a modelling agency, and this win means she “can take care of everything”. She said perseverance and hard work is the key to success and encouraged aspiring models to persevere. “If you believe in yourself, follow your dreams and trust in God, everything is possible.” Ngaleka will be coming home soon and a welcome-home event is in the pipeline.

HE NG Kerk has opened a clothing boutique to get additional funds for its soup kitchen and at the same time, clothe those in desperate need. The soup kitchen is run every Monday and provides meals for those who live on the street. On Monday the Fever saw people going to the church’s soup kitchen, and then leaving with bags of clothing, which they were given because they had nothing else. “We have a number of people coming to the church for the soup kitchen every Monday. The ladies running the boutique are doing a great job with the support of church members,” said Joey Du Toit, the soup kitchen assistant. Mersia van Aswegen and Aletta Naude are responsible for the boutique, which is open every day. The boutique and soup kitchen work together in assisting those who live on the street. “At times we get people coming to the soup kitchen for the first time and they have nothing, so we give them items from the boutique,” said Du Toit. The boutique women also collect soap and cosmetics to give to the street people.

The community can assist the boutique by buying and donating items. For more information, phone the church at 039 682 0266.

TOURISM 360

That brighter outlook LAST week I attended a two-day workshop with the National Department of Tourism, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal and a number of municipal officials to unpack the maritime and coastal tourism potentials and projects along our province’s coastline. On analysis of inputs from stakeholders for our South Coast it became apparent that there appears to be more reason for optimism than otherwise. Towns like Port Shepstone, Scottburgh and Margate are earmarked for urban renewal programmes, beach amenity upgrades are continuing, a marina concept is brewing for Port Shepstone and the proposed Amazon

Valley Water Park at Kelso is still very much alive. Strides have been made for our Margate Airport to receive developmental attention and in our rural areas the first implementation phase of the multi trails programme has been activated. The new Maritime Museum in Port Shepstone is under construction and designs for a new Portuguese Mariners Monument at Port Edward have been completed. The small craft harbour concept along with the proposed multibillionrand Music City still have legs and the Umzumbe Municipality is some way down the line to develop a new leisure and retail precinct at Turton Beach.

So collectively and all things being equal, there seems to be far more reason for optimism than one could imagine. Of all international visitors coming to South Africa about 25% utilise our coastline for their trip - this percentage is even higher if one discounts our SADC visitors who are mainly here for retail and business purposes. Understandably our domestic market really gravitates to the coast for leisure and holidays and presently the tourism authorities in KZN are targeting a four percent growth in coastal tourism over the next few years. We have agreed to join hands with other coastal tourism practitioners

further north to collectively introduce campaigns to encourage coastal and marine tourism which will by virtue of value adding expectation also filtrate into our inland areas. After all the rest of South Africa’s coastal tourism areas are also chasing the same buck locally and from abroad and we need to win them over to us rather than elsewhere. Maybe the sardines have this year been a bit bleak in announcing their arrival on our beaches, however, I believe in the medium- to long-term, there are tourism initiatives here we can be radiant about. I read once that a winner says: “It may be difficult, but it’s possible. ” A loser says: “It may be possible, but it is

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM too difficult.” I believe there are enough winning people here for us to reach that brighter tourism and leisure horizon.

WITH the everincreasing demand for water, Ugu has moved swiftly with plans towards the refurbishment and upgrading of our water infrastructure. This was evident when a multimillionrand project was launched at KwaGoqoza at Ezinqoleni Ward 3 on Tuesday. Ugu District mayor Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede, ac companied by Ezinqoleni mayor, Cllr Amon Mpisi, turned the sod as a symbol of the implementation of the extension of Umtamvuna Water Treatment Works. A total of R45 million will be used for the upgrading of the Umtamvuma scheme. Detailed scope of works include the construction of reinforced concrete clarifier, construction of rein forced sand filter with associated building, construc tion of a fivemegalitre reinforced concrete reservoir, construction of access and internal roads together with parking area, construction and installation of pipe work and the construction of electricalmechanical equipment. Canning top TV soapies indicate SABC’s incompetence THE SABC has truly shown its incompetence, naiveté and plain old stupidity by canning statistically the most watched show on television. The iconic and ever-popular soap Days of Our Lives will see its last days on South African television this month. On top of that, we have seen an influx of new, but mediocre local shows being screened. Has the arrogant SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng taken into account the advertising and revenue implications here? How short-sighted can the head of such an entity be? How many millions will be lost due to such decisions in the future?

Boycott SABC TV UNLESS the SABC can bring Hlaudi Motsoeneng in line, I suggest all viewers and advertisers agree to boycott watching SABC TV, and that companies move their advertising expenditure to e.tv and DStv. I will go as far as making an effort not to buy any product that is advertised on SABC channels, as these are being used illegally to keep President Jacob Zuma’s ANC in power by trying to mislead voters in South Africa. Motsoeneng obviously got his inspiration from Adolf Hitler’s minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, or he is a Flat Earther who thinks that just because we don’t see public protests on TV, everything is running smoothly and Zuma is a popular president. Wouter se Watergat

WW

WOUTER WILLEMSE

“JY sê ek kan jou nie oortuig om nie daaroor te skryf nie? Asseblief Woutie, maak dan net seker jy laat hulle weet ek was baie emosioneel en het ‘n dop of twee jenewer gedrink. Ek weet ek was ook rammetjie-uitnek. Ek is jammer.”

O K Innerlike verskeurdheid STILTETYD:

KLEINTYD het my ouma, as ek stout was, vir my gevra: “Wie sit alweer daar op jou skouer?

allie

buite onsself. Dit lê by Christus self. By Christus is daar genade want Hy vergewe sewentig maal sewe.

N celebration of Mandela Day and getting involved in the community, Wild Coast Sun partnered with Spur and Mzamba Youth Centre and staff spent the day painting a school in Sirasheni. The staff spent eight hours helping at the school and doing giveaways at Chief Dinizulu School. The school started in 2011 as a preschool with only one classroom, but as the need for a school in the area arose, parents took responsibility to see that dream materialise and knocked at possible doors for help, including at

Wild Coast Sun. The school has now grown up to Grade 4 as a satellite of Mdatya School. “The pupils will never forget this semester’s first day at school as they had nothing, but smiles on their faces, singing Mandela uliqhawe (hero). “Painting for them wasn’t really the exciting part as they enjoyed burgers from Spur Wild Coast Sun branch and juice provided by Bambanani Restaurant,” said Mahlubi Thole, public relations and co-ordinator for Wild Coast Sun. - Supplied

Stop ‘banging’ water pipes >> Pay attention when pipes make a noise

T

HE flow of water in pipes can cause all kinds of weird noises. The sound of water running through the pipes isn't too bad, but what about some of those other plumbing sounds like creaks or cracking, rattling, whistling, and the most annoying or scary of them all - that loud banging noise? Antonio Vannucci-Smit, of IONIC Gas Plumbing Electrical, shares some of the causes of noisy pipes and how to fix them. Creaks or a cracking sound These are usually caused by the expansion and contraction of the water pipes themselves. As hot water runs through a pipe, it heats up the pipe naturally, causing it to expand slightly. Once the water stops flowing, the pipe cools and the metal contracts, resulting in the creaking or cracking sound. The easiest way to fix this is to put some insulation around the pipe or, if the pipe is running through a tight fitting hole in the wood framing, cut a notch in the framing so that it can expand and contract without that sound. Rattling The cause and remedy for this noise is similar to the cracking sound. The rattling comes from the pressure of water running through a loose pipe, which causes it to vibrate or rattle slightly.

The flow of water that runs When a loose pipe vibrates through the pipes contains against something solid, like energy. When this flow is ab roof trusses or ceiling branruptly stopped, the energy is dering, you’ll hear the ratwhat causes the loud banging tling sound. sound. Stopping the pipe from vi PHOTO: SUPPLIED brating will fix the rattle, so put some cushioning around the pipe or fasten it more securely to the trusses using cable ties so that the pipe no longer rattles. Whistling This is usually caused by water flowing through a restricted section of the plumbing. The restriction could be either sediment in the pipe or a defective washer or valve. If the whistling only occurs when a particular tap or mixer is turned on, that’s likely where the problem is, and replacing the washer or repairing the valve seat should fix it. However, if the whistling sound occurs when any faucet is turned on, the problem is more likely in the main water supply valve. Adjusting the water pressure at the The loud banging sound that comes main water valve by opening it further on when you shut off the water flow is or closing it a little may dislodge the im- called ‘water hammer’, and is a fairly pediment, or the change in water pres- common complaint in older homes. sure could get rid of the whistling The flow of water that runs through sound. the pipes contains energy. You can try to solve this by turning Banging off the main water supply and opening

all the faucets in the house to drain the system. Next, turn the water supply back on and work your way through the house, turning off the faucets as water flows through them. This should trap some air in the piping so it will provide a cushioning effect. If this doesn't work, you can buy a water hammer arrester which can be attached directly to the water supply

pipe where the water hammer originates. If your plumbing is making any of these sounds, you should be listening because it's telling you it needs some maintenance. The sound is caused by something not working properly in your system and if you ignore it, over time, that small sound could lead to bigger problems. - Supplied.

Control moles in a garden MOLE control can be a difficult and an ongoing struggle in the garden. Find the most proven way to control moles - with excellent results. Moles can ruin the appearance of your lawn and flower beds, and their tunnels damage the roots of young plants, flowers and vegetables. Many mistakenly believe moles kill plants by feeding on their roots, but moles actually prefer worms, grubs and other bugs. Plant damage is a side effect of their travels through the earth. The air pockets they create around the roots of ornamental plants and flowers can cause them to dry out and die. Traps, baits and repellents offer homeowners the best chance for revenge

The first step is to locate active feeding runways. Use a broom handle or small stick to poke holes in the runways, and then wait a few hours. The holes that have been plugged back up when you return indicate the active tunnels, which will be the focus of any course of action. Many repellents are based on castor bean oil. You can spray repellents onto lawns with a garden hose or apply granules with a spreader. Repellents are available at local garden centres, but don’t expect miraculous results. Traps provide one of the most efficient and economical controls. There are a variety of traps, from wire hoop and scissor-types to tunnel traps. While it may prevent some lawn damage, battling moles remains a never-ending struggle. These pests are a perennial problem that never goes away. You may control a few, but in time they will be back in your garden feeding on earthworms. – Supplied.

EMBERS of Youth, Arts, Mentorship and Sport (Yams) spent their 67 minutes with the Gamalakhe community on Mandela Day doing good. Kevin Dlala, Yams chair said they chose Gamalakhe because many of their members come from the area. Dladla said the area had been identified a while ago and the organisation will do doing most of their programmes for the Gamalakhe commu-

nity. “On the day, we honoured the legendary late former president of our country, Nelson Mandela, for the tireless work he did for the betterment of society,” said Dladla. He said as part of their programme they painted Zibambeleni Old Age Day Care Centre, planted trees around the children’s park and jungle gym connected to T.B. Molefe sports field, played games and hosted a show by local artists. Dladla said they arranged for Gamalakhe Lower Primary School pupils

to participate in the events. “Pupils came in groups during school time and then after school as the programme went on all day,” he said. “A big thank you to Coca-Cola for funding the majority of the costs involved in organising the event. We also thank Sebenza Nurseries for donating a truck full of plants, and last but not least, we would thank councillor Phumlani Gumbi for helping us secure the stadium and ensuring that the event was in line with municipal requirements,” said Dladla.

Elite coupé cruiser >> Brian Bassett experiences taste and discernment in a coupé

S

IR Stirling Moss, the great racing driver, once asked the question: “Why do people buy coupés?” He felt they are restricted to two doors, which are usually wide to facilitate rear seat access, and so exit is difficult in parking lots. He then went on to answer his own question by saying: “Coupés are among the world’s best looking cars and a tribute to their owner’s taste and discernment.” Enter the BMW 420d Coupé. In 2013 BMW discovered the joy of even numbers and displayed the 420 Coupe at the Detroit Motor Show. We were told that it would replace the 3-Series Coupé and it was likely that there would be any further models in the range. BMW however, could not resist competing with the Audi A5 Coupe Hatch and a four-door 4-Series Grand Coupé followed soon Styling

This is a really good looking car which turns heads as you drive by. At the front it is typically BMW, with a large, double kidney grill and swept back headlamps on either side, all underlined by a dark air intake flanked by two fog lamps. The ribbed bonnet flows into a raked windscreen, which guides the eye to a sloping roof. Our car came with a fitted sunroof, an optional extra but nice to have. The steeply sloping rear window and tailgate combine with wraparound tail lights to present a sleek profile. The design is complimented by serious rubber on its 19-inch light alloy wheels and in any parking lot it is, in the words of Moss, “a tribute to the owner’s taste and discernment”. Interior The interior of our car was finished in soft touch plastics and black leather. It is much like the 3-series interior, comfortable, solid and a very pleasant place to be. The control ergonomics are excellent. The instruments are clear and easy to read while driving. The main instrument cluster has four

Still no sign of demeritsystem of Aarto is to effect behavioural change among drivers in order to curb the growing number of road deaths. According to the Road Traffic Manage ment Corporation (RTMC), about 13 000 people died on the country’s roads last year alone. The AA has supported many of the pro posals relating to Aarto since they were first mooted in 1998, through the establishment of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA), which was created specifically to roll out and administer Aarto. Apart from creating the RTIA, the legis lation on Aarto also: • established the concept of an “infringe ment” as a traffic violation which can be dealt with administratively (such as speed ing or talking on your cellphone while driv ing), as opposed to an “offence”, which re mains a criminal offence (such as drunk driving, which is indistinguishable from any other criminal offence, and which requires

AFTER years of pilot projects, the Adminis trative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offen ces (Aarto) was expected to be implement ed from 1 April 1. However, the implementation of this system has again been delayed, a delay that is doing more harm than good, said the Au tomobile Association (AA) said. Originally, the system was to be imple mented in 2011, but this was delayed indefi nitely. A new implementation date of April 2012 was suggested but again this was de layed. In 2015, Deputy Transport Minister Sin disiwe Chikunga announced that Aarto would be implemented in April 2016, but this date has also slipped past quietly. “Since 1998, a lot of time, effort and money has gone into developing and imple menting Aarto. Despite this, we still don’t have a workable system, which is lamenta ble,” the AA said. A key objective for the implementation

analogue displays, speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge, temperature, as well as digital computer functions. The i-drive and its rotary selector are placed centrally and are easy to operate. The rear seats offer a surprising amount of space and can take two adults in comfort over long distances. For a large man like me it is still a bit of a scramble to get in and out but, once in you are well supported and do not feel in the least claustrophobic even though the rear windows do not open. Boot space is generous at 445 litres. The car we drove had front and rear parking sensors, which are these days essential. Safety and security The 420d has a range of safety features, including ABS with EBD, an occupant cell, the BMW restraint system, adaptive headlights, as well as driver and front passenger airbags and side bags integrated into the front seat backrests for the rear passengers. The car also has keyless entry and an alarm system. Performance The 420d has BMW’s four-cylinder, Twin Power Turbo diesel engine, which features Common Rail direct injection and variable turbine geometry. The engine puts out 135 kW of pow-

er and 400 Nm of torque. The eightspeed auto gearbox in our car changed swiftly and smartly; and is an obviously sophisticated system. 0-100 km/h comes up in around 7,5 seconds and, if you are in suicide mode, top speed is claimed at 240 km/h. Fuel consumption is difficult to predict in a fast car but, if you are over 50 and driving sensibly you should achieve around 5 l/100 km. The 4-series Coupe is wider and 45kg lighter than the 3-Series it replaced and also has a lower centre of gravity. Combined with a sharpened steering and the adaptive drive system, the car handles superbly on good roads and bad. Sport mode makes a real difference to performance. And throttle

A person is allowed to drive until he or she has 12 points. Every point exceeding 12 points results in a threemonth licence suspension. One point is reduced every three months if no further contraventions occur. A licence is cancelled when it has been suspended for the third time. Aarto has been piloted in Tshwane since 2008, and Johannesburg since 2009, but the points demerit system has not been im plemented. This will not happen until Aarto is implemented nationally. Botha cleared to travel >> Firstchoice tighthead Adriaanse stays behind in Durban for Super Rugby quarter against Hurricanes JOHN BISHOP

choice tighthead, has stayed behind in Durban for family reasons. Botha, who has shown encouraging form this month after recovering from injury, has played in only three of the mandatory four games necessary to qualify for the playoffs. But the former Stormers lock was listed as an injured player at the start of the season and head coach Gary Gold this week successfully applied for special dispensation. On Monday the Sharks said that Botha had permission from Sanzaar to accompany the squad but, curiously, they had not yet cleared him to play. The loss of Adriaanse, who has consistently been the Sharks’ strongest scrummager this season, is a major blow with the Sharks wanting to place the Hurricanes under pressure at the set-piece. Coenie Oosthuizen and Thomas du Toit will cover tighthead on Saturday with Beast Mtawarira and Dale Chadwick the looseheads. The Sharks are still without Springbok flyhalf Pat Lambie, who is still suffering from the symptoms of concussion, but Springbok fullback Willie le Roux, first-choice centre Paul Jordaan and flank Jean-Luc du Preez have returned to full fitness and are in the squad. Jean-Luc’s twin brother, backrower Dan du Preez, is still out with a torn groin muscle and Gold says the 20-year-old now faces surgery. Le Roux has not played since the June Tests against Ireland while Jordaan damaged a knee against the Lions earlier this month. Mtawarira, who is likely to lead the team on Saturday, and lock Stephan Lewies are certain to return to the starting line-up. (Mtawarira was rested against the Sunwolves at the week-

THE KZN leg of South Africa’s Most Beautiful Race will be taking to the roads of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, August 7 for the annual Spar Women’s 10km-5km. Settling back into its usual winter

date, the race will have a field of green flowing along the roads in and around The Oval where an expected 4 000 athletes will be taking the challenge of the two distances. The event is the biggest women’s athletic event and sec-

ond biggest annual road running event to take place in the city aside from the Comrades Marathon. Both the routes will remain unchanged, with the start line set adjacent to Maritzburg College’s main

end while Lewies played off the bench). Mtawarira, speaking before the squad flew out of Durban, said he had been impressed at the way the young Sharks team had “stepped up” this season. “Everyone is excited about reaching the playoffs. But now it is crunch time and we will have to take chances. I’m confident that if we produce our best performance, we have a massive chance.” The Beast said it was key that the forwards stood up to the New Zealanders physically. “We have to start well and get into the game from the start.” Lewies, who has had fitness problems in recent seasons, said he was delighted to have had an injury-free season. “I’m enjoying being with this young group of players and they have helped in getting back into form. But I have also been playing alongside [fellow lock] Etienne Oosthuizen since 2014 and that has also given me confidence.” The quarter-final kicks off at 9.35 am on Saturday (SA time) and New Zealander Glen Jackson will be the referee. rugby field, Goldstones, and the finish line at The Oval cricket stadium. Both races will start at 8 am after the playing of the national anthem. The 10-km and five-kilometre participants will set off together with the first half of the race looping around the outskirts of the CBD, and the fivekilometre race turning into The Oval and the 10-km athletes doing another loop around the schools’ precinct, before returning to The Oval. A strong field of local runners is expected to compete this year with the defending champ, Tebogo Masehla, rumoured to be back. The big names in this year’s SPAR Grand Prix will be flying the South African flag at the Rio Olympics, which leaves a win and the R8 000 winner’s purse open to the remaining local contenders. Entries are open, with two options to enter. The first is online at www.sparwomensrace.co.za where you can either pay by credit card or by EFT. The second option is a manual entry at race registration on Friday, 5 August and Saturday, 6 August at The Oval. Companies, running clubs and groups of 10 or more can enter through the bulk entries option. E-mail bulk@sparwomensrace.co.za for more information. Entries to the 10 km distance are open from age 14 and to the five kilometre from age nine — the age restrictions being applicable on the day of the competition. Entry is R90 for the 10km licensed athletes and for the five-kilometre runners. Entry fee non-licensed athletes is R100 - the extra R10 includes a temporary licence for the day. For more info contact the race organisers on maritzburg@sparwomensrace.co.za or visit the official race on www.sparwomensrace.co.za or like the Facebook page. - Supplied.

Goog classic golf on the way THE highly-anticipated Selborne Classic will again be attracting a host of experienced players to the greens from 5 to 7 August with renowned golfer, Michael Scholz, coming on as emcee for the event. This entertaining speaker has years of experience in the golfing arena having competed on professional circuits around the world since 1992. All competitions played during the three-day Selborne Classic will be in teams of four with Friday and Saturday following a betterball format and Sunday a fourball alliance. On arrival at Selborne, players must register individually after which a ‘goodie’ bag can be collected. The three days of golf, as well as all halfway house meals, dinners and entertainment for the three nights, are included in the entrance fee. On Friday, 5 August each team of four will be divided into two teams and assigned another team to compete against. First, second and third prizes will be awarded for the day, relative to the betterball pairings. On Saturday, 6 August the betterball competition will follow Friday’s format although golfers must change partners within each two ball. The partner change is in keeping with the spirit of the tournament which encourages camaraderie while introducing golfers to different players. Once again, first, second and third prizes will be awarded. On Sunday, 7 August each team will play a fourball alliance, two scores to count, format and the top five alliance prizes will be awarded on the day. This will be followed by the Selborne Classic overall prizegiving which will see the top 10 teams awarded some fantastic prizes. There will also be raffles held throughout the tournament, nearest-to-pins on all four shorts, mystery prizes daily as well as fun activities on each tee provided by sponsors. This year, competitors will also be able to participate in Selborne’s newly introduced Par 3 Challenge Tournament which will take place directly after the Selborne Classic on Monday, 8 August. To enhance the experience, Selborne Hotel is offering a special room rate for the Selborne Classic at a cost of R935 per room, on a room-only basis, T&C’s apply. At an additional cost, spa treatments are also on offer from 8am to 10pm daily. To book, contact the Selborne Hotel on 039 688 1800. For group accommodation, Selborne offers selfcatering villas from R3 350 for four nights per person sharing. Rates are based on four occupants in a two-bedroom (foursleeper) Villa, T&C’s apply. To book contact 039 975 8500. The annual golfing competition, which is co-sponsored by Halfway Toyota Scottburgh, will take place at Selborne Golf Estate in Pennington on the KwaZuluNatal South Coast. IVE players from Gamalakhe Ayanda Mkwanazi, Sabelo Xolo, Aluncedo Nxumalo, Babah Lubanyana and Nkululeko Mavundla - have been selected to play for Golden Arrows, which plays in the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL). Gamalakhe coach Nhlanhla Mbili said he started mentoring the players from an early age and is very proud to see them going this far. “I trained players from the age of 14 under Young Mates United and as they grew and developed, some of them played for Gamalakhe United, which is currently playing in the ABC Motsepe League,” said Mbili.

Mbili said Mkwanazi and Lubanyana were selected to play for the first team while Nxumalo and Mavundla were selected for the Multichoice Diski team. Mkwanazi has however, turned down the offer, saying players were selected to play for the second team, which is not good for him. “The trials were for the second team, not the first team and I already have a permanent job and leaving my job to play for the second team would not have been good enough as I have commitments,” said Mkwanazi. James Dlamini, Golden Arrows general manager, said the selection trials were part of the club’s off-season programme and they have visited various municipalities to select

players. The selection process in Ugu district was done at Douglas Mitchell and 24 players were selected. “Elimination was done leaving us with 12 players and on final elimination four players were selected from Gamalakhe,” said Dlamini. “The players that joined us started training on Tuesday and at this stage we cannot determine which teams they will be playing for. “It all depends on each player’s performance.” Dlamini said one of the reasons why they came to Ugu first is that many of the players of Golden Arrows are from the district, saying the relationship they have with municipality and local Safa authorities is good.
