A number of reasons to celebrate

south coast This week ONLINE www.hillcrestfever.co.za

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Man shot in Oslo Beach CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com RESIDENTS living in the vicinity of Castor Road, Oslo Beach woke up to the sound of a gunshot in the early hours of Thursday morning after a scuffle

broke out between a “suspicious man” and a guard from a security company. Police spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid said guards from the company were conducting patrols in the area when they saw the man at a premises in Castor Road.

Man appears for prison drug smuggling A 29-YEAR-OLD man appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for dealing in drugs after he was allegedly found trying to sneak in drugs for a prisoner at Port Shepstone Correctional Services holding cells on Monday. “The man came to Port Shepstone police station to drop off food to be given to a detainee in the police cells,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. She said the shift commander then examined the container of yoghurt and a loaf of bread and discovered 10 mandrax tablets and 26 heroin capsules hidden inside the food. The man was released on R1000 bail and will appear again on 1 March. - Supplied.

NUMBER of stabbings were reported in Margate and Port Edward last week Friday and Saturday. In Margate, a man was killed and another one critically wounded in two separate stabbing incidents on Saturday morning. Paramedics confirmed that an 18-year-old man died on Ridge Road during the first incident. Netcare 911 paramedics saw the man lying on the road and discovered he had sustained a stab wound to the chest. Police also responded to the scene and later opened a murder docket. Later that same morning at about 2.30am, paramedics and Saps responded to another incident which took place at a restaurant. The two, who are alleged to have been friends, aged 18 and 23 are said to have been socialising before a scuffle broke out over a cigarette. An off-duty paramedic found the victim unresponsive. Netcare 911 paramedics then arrived at the scene and found that the patient had been resuscitated. “The Netcare 911 Advanced Life Support paramedic and her team stabilised the man at the

scene before transporting him to hospital,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha. An 18-year-old man appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday for attempted murder and assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm. The case was postponed to 28 December. In a separate incident, three teenagers from the Eastern Cape were stabbed in Port Edward on Friday. Members of NSRI Port Edward were requested to assist the Saps to deal with the incidents. One victim suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest, another one suffered stab wounds and blunt trauma injuries to the head and torso and the other victim was also stabbed on the chest. Kwa-Zulu Natal Government Health EMS arrived on the scene and EMS paramedics took over care of the patients who were transported to hospital in stable conditions. Mfeka said no case was opened as the three men were all under the influence of alcohol and were told return to the station and give their statement when they were sober. “They were told to come back to give their statement after they became sober but did not return as yet,” he said.

BUILDING contractor says his last resort has been to approach the media in his bid to receive long overdue payment from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) for a service his company rendered 16 months ago. Elmar Basson of Anthony & Basson Development said his company initially completed a Margate south beach upgrade project in August 2014. “The tender entailed applying paving and composite decking from Margate south beach up until Ramsgate,” said Basson. “After completion of the final account, the final invoice and certificate was handed to the municipali-

with all the relevant parties. After the issue was not resolved, we eventually arranged a meeting with the head of the finance department in October,” said Basson. Basson said he has been given many excuses as to why there is such a long delay in payment, ranging from the change of the municipality’s name, to there not being money in the 2016 budget to pay his company. “Why is it necessary for us to resort to these drastic measures to get paid by local municipality?” he asked. When contacted to give the municipality’s side of the story, Simon April, spokesperson for RNM said the issue was “unacceptable”. “Firstly and generally speaking let me indicate that it is unaccepta-

Basson said the municipality, still under the name of Hibiscus Coast Municipality at the time, asked the company to purchase material so that the full amount for the budget for the contract was spent. “This was so that they (municipality) will have stock of materials to use for the maintenance of the walkways,” he said. Merry Christmas from the mayor

Beach parking lot gets a facelift PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com

M

EMBERS of the Umtwentweni Ratepayers Association, sponsors and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality representatives gathered at the Umtentweni beach last Thursday morning to unveil its newly revamped parking lot.

The association did all the work themselves without asking for any help from the municipality. Chairman Selvan Chetty said they felt that the parking lot was small and something had to be done before welcoming holiday makers. “As ratepayers we got into a strategic partnership with our sponsors who responded very quickly when we

made the call. In two weeks, the designs were done by Liela Edwards, while Port Shepstone Precast was more than willing to donate the material needed. Our other sponsor Arthur Edwards took his time and personally built the restraining wall up.” Chetty said another sponsor was Solly Desai who sponsored paint and Hedley Van der Merwe sponsored in-

digenous plants to beautify the surroundings. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor Nomusa Mqwebu said she was very pleased that the community got together for this project and said she hoped other communities will be inspired by this and start working together as well. “I would like to thank all the sponsors for showing the spirit of Ubuntu,” said Mqwebu. The ratepayers informed the mayor that a CCTV camera system has been installed in various parts of Umtemtweni to help curb crime, and also how residents have collaborated with the SAPS to keep the area safe and clean. They requested that an arrangement be made to link the camera system to the municipality’s one. A skateboard rink was among other things discussed at the meeting of which municipal manager Max Mbili said the ratepayers should send him a formal proposal.

dation (PMF) said poverty has been recognized to be a root cause of many social ills in the area, including HIV and Aids. He said when his foundation started working in the area, its aim was to implement programmes and projects aimed at leadership development, life skills, talent promotion and identification, grooming, career guidance, modelling, support and motivation. Mzobe said the main aim is to encourage the youth to involve themselves in entrepreneurial activities. “Judging from this profile, the Ezinqoleni area fitted our criteria perfectly hence PMF has recently formally launched a structure there. We have around 25 young individuals between the ages of 15 and 25 who are our new members. These members are more focused in furthering their studies, career guidance support, promotions of their natural talents and skills, modelling and sharpening their entrepreneurial skills,” said Mzobe. He said the foundation will be rolling out its programme at the beginning of 2017 to ensure that the dreams of these vulnerable young leaders are not tarnished but are realised. Mzobe invited youth from Ezinqoleni who would like to participate in the programme to contact Amanda Dlamini on 081 4054624 or email phumlani.president@icloud.com

highly anticipated One Way Christmas truck is making visits to communities on the South Coast. In previous years, Father Christmas has chosen varied modes of transport to visit the South Coast, from a Coca-Cola truck, a helicopter and even a fire engine. To keep up with the fun and the festive spirit, One Way Youth Outreach decided to bring Father Christmas in an aeroplane

from Margate Airport on Tuesday. He met children and handed out treats. He has already visited Kwa-Nzimakwe, Breama, Ramsgate and Margate. Moms and dads brought out the children to enjoy the lively atmosphere, which included Christmas music, the MC, lighting and a safely co-ordinated and marshalled programme. Today (Thursday) he is at Sunwich Port Beach. - Supplied.

AVESHE Community Hall in Murchison came to life on Tuesday as local aspiring dancers and actors performed in front of a professional television actor and an audience. Bheki Mkhwane of the TV drama iSibaya was invited to watch the talented youth perform. The purpose of his visit was to scout potential actors and actresses. These youth will then attend workshops next year where Mkhwane will share his expertise. “We approached the Department of Social Development for funding in order to make this event possible,” said Thuli Cebisa of Vukuzenzele. “We want to get rid of social ills that are destroying the youth. We want them to focus on their talents and rather develop that instead of getting into trouble,” she said. Cebisa said that more programmes such as these will be held in the community every quarter.

Bargain Xpress Izingolweni manager Andries Howell hands Marcia Abrahams her prize. IN the run-up to the car giveaway, Bargain Xpress is holding a weekly lucky draw where customers entering the competition in-store stand a chance of winning R100. The competition runs until 31 January, 2017.

TOURISM 360

Dog on the Couch

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

Life is a beach O

N the SA Tourism’s website, our national destination marketing agency cites six South Coast’s beaches in the top 10 for KwaZulu-Natal. I am not surprised. Our easily accessible beaches are more user friendly than most and are ideal for restful recreation and entertainment. We have seven Blue Flag beaches which meet with the highest international standards and with our sub tropical climate we really have that 365 day destination offering. We remain committed to the sea sell as a pivotal part of our promotional mandate. Ugu South Coast Tourism has supported the National Surf Rescue Institute (NSRI) at Port Edward with some of their gear to ensure that visitor safety is paramount and as incident free as possible. Furthermore, we have assisted the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) in training beach stewards at our Blue Flag beaches to enhance the leisure experience for our visitors and residents. Our investment in seasonal beach activations continues with many event days lined up throughout the district. Most of the world’s tourism takes

place at or near the coast so we are blessed that South Africans are very loyal in taking their breaks to the South Coast and also sample the numerous eco cultural and nature based experiences inland. So we have it all - spot on weather, great beaches from active family ones to tranquil coves and languid lagoons and out to sea responsible diving and fishing abounds. There is so much vibe and variety in that spirit of rainbow relaxation. So when our stressed out lives prompts us to feel that life is a b..ch, that rejuvenation and rescue of the soul lies here on our sea step and around us. There is more than a grain of truth when a Gauteng visitor said to me last festive season “Coming here reminds me to retire early and have my batteries better charged for the rest of my life”. No wonder so many people have second or retirement homes from Scottburgh right down to Port Edward. I suppose that’s why Tourism KwaZulu-Natal gave us that title “Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom.” Sunny and Safe days to everybody, we’ll chat again in 2017.

Brakpan jokes not funny WE on the South Coast should be grateful for all the wonderful tourists who visit our area this time of the year. They are our lifeline and without them, the South Coast would be very different economically to what it is today. What needs to stop are the Brakpan and Benoni jokes on Facebook by my fellow locals who make fun of our visitors. This needs to stop and let us not make fun of the people who provide us with a lifeline that continues to sustain us long after they are gone. That being said, the visitors should also stop their “big city” attitudes and rudeness. Gwendolyn

Hi Susan, I was planning to have my dogs shaved for summer but have heard some confusing ideas on the subject. Do you have any suggestions? Edna To shave or not to shave, that is the question. I’m not surprised you’ve heard conflicting views on this controversial subject as some people insist on shaving and others advise strongly against it. You don’t mention what breed you have, so what follows is generalised advice. Firstly, for the purpose here, it helps to understand that there are basically two types of coat in dogs, single-coated and double-coated. Shih Tzuz, Bichons, Maltese and Poodles are examples of single-coated breeds. These dogs have a top or over-coat that grows all over the

body. They usually get shaved, but care should be taken that they have some protection from sunburn. Double-coated examples are Border Collies, German Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Siberian Huskies, Pomeranians and Samoyeds. The two coats help provide insulation and protection against the summer heat. During spring the dense undercoat thins out naturally by detaching from the body in what is known as a moult. If not brushed out, this can become a matted heat- trap. Regular brushing will remove dead fur and leave the second layer of guard-hairs to deflect the heat while the inner layer keeps the skin cool. Many dogs such as Maltese and Poodle types will need to be shaved and kept trimmed. However, the Northern dogs and other Shepherd types which have double coats may have their coats ruined by shaving, the new growth feeling “sticky” and having a Velcro-like texture, the toplayer of the coat acts as an air conditioner, with minute muscles connected to each hair-shaft enabling the hairs to stand up and capture the breeze, thereby cooling the dog or offering protection against the sun. Shaving this will result in the undercoat absorbing the sun directly, which is likely to cause overheating in hot weather. Older dogs tend to suffer more in the heat than youngsters. I have experienced denser re-growth on two

thirteen-year-old Border collies who had their under-bellies and pantaloons shaved for a hot summer, and the re-growth did appear to be denser. Note that hairless dogs like the Chinese Crested types, and dogs that have been shaved or have bald patches, will need a dog-safe sunscreen. Ask your vet for recommendations. Do not use sun screen intended for human skin. There are nevertheless many good reasons to shave a dog, such as needing to use medicated shampoos for certain skin allergies. Your vet will also be the best advisor on the pros and cons. There is a veterinary brand of dog food which has been shown to reduce shedding in dogs by 80%. Enquire at your vet. If you feel your dog is uncomfortable in the heat, use a de-shedding tool to thin out the undercoat and remove excess hair. You may also want to ask a groomer to shave the belly so that the dog can lie on a cool floor, but leave the fur on the areas the sun beats down on. Avoid walking in the midday heat. Rather take your dog out in the cooler morning or evening temperatures, and avoid hot paving and tar. I often see people subjecting their dogs to prolonged periods on hot surfaces. Make sure plenty of water is available at all times and that the dog has a cool shady area to retreat to. A children’s plastic sandpit or pool will be much appreciated especially by the retriever type dogs. I hope this has been helpful. Ugu Mayor’s Christmas Message

We are approaching the end of yet another challenging, yet exciting year. This year has been a very long and eventful year within the sphere of local government. Indeed, we can look back at a year that was and agree that a lot of strides has been made towards advancing the developmental agenda of local government, that of improving the lives of our communities through provision of basic services. Yes, certain things did not go the way we would have planned them to but nevertheless, the positives simply out-weigh the negatives. I wish you all the people of this wonderful district a Merry Christmas and peaceful festive season. I encourage both you our residents and visitors to take some time out during this festive season to explore our diverse cultural, leisure and many more lifestyle activities that make Ugu District a tourism destination of choice. To all the residents and various stakeholders, thank you once again for keeping us on our toes. Your devotion to the business of government continues to guide us as we pursue the mandate you gave us during the local government elections. You remain our strategic partners and together we can move our district forward. As you all take time off from a hectic year that was, please do so in peace and harmony. Embrace those next to you and make a difference to those less fortunate. After all, the festive season is a time of giving, so let us all play our part and make a difference to those in need. If you will be travelling during this period, obey the rules of the road, and arrive alive.

Have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza Mayor, Ugu District Municipality

INSTEAD of promoting the new and free flavoured condoms, the government should rather heed the call by the students who are demanding that the government do away with the “tampon tax”, which is the major cause of hygiene products becoming increasingly unaffordable for women. In addition, the campaign is also calling on the management of tertiary institutions to provide free sanitary towels to women. While the prevention of HIV/Aids is

important, promoting the new condoms is disingenuous. Sanitary products and menstrual hygiene are basic human necessities and rights, and not luxuries. If condoms can be freely available to all, then there is no reason why essential items like sanitary pads cannot be freely available from public hospitals and clinics. According to reports, an estimated seven million girls miss school for some days every month because of a

lack of access to hygiene products to take care of themselves during that time of the month. Girls in learning institutions should not be deprived of education because of a problem that is easily resolvable. Helping girls to manage menstruation can improve school and university attendance. I support the call for sanitary towels to be made accessible to the less privileged females in our country. M. Saeed

HUNDREDS of thousands of people are facing extreme poverty in Africa. We have the potential and expertise to achieve our goals to eliminate poverty. We are hopeful about eradicating fraud and corruption. We all understand the ingredients needed for a healthy democracy. Democracy is about freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of association. Each of us has a fundamental right to

be respected and to be treated with dignity. Journalists are kept behind bars by the government for doing their jobs. The problem that we have today is that leaders are doing their best to change the rules of the game to stay in power. It’s about time that Africa’s leaders, when their term is over, transfer power peacefully. Africa has made tremendous progress. It must be understood

that the younger generation are the leaders of tomorrow. Corruption is draining billions of rands from the economy and I hate to see that. This money could be used to build schools, hospitals and clinics, provide housing for people and go towards fees in the varsity environment. It is time that the government does something about the fees issue. J.J. Pillay

TO me, the year 2016 will go down as “The Year of the Bigot.” From racists to xenophobes to homophobes, all kinds came out of the bush this year. My list is not complete as there is one bigot that most South Africans tend to ignore or act as if he does not exist. Do you know who that bigot is? The tribalist. He is very active yet his trans-

gressions go unpunished. I have noticed that it is not fashionable for people to speak against tribalism and I wonder why. I have been a victim of both racism and tribalism but I have to tell you, the latter is the worst feeling ever. Imagine being discriminated against by someone who looks like you. It is very hurtful. At least with racism, it is expected

that at some point in your life, you will encounter some dunderhead who has been raised on a diet of racism. What is not expected is for one to encounter a tribalist. I cannot wait for the day all bigots are dealt with equally and thoroughly. I hope the Hate Bill will do just that. DBM Umtentweni

“Dis my banket-tafeldoek!” “Kyk hier, hier is my voorletters in die hoek.”

“Ek kon my nog nooit daarvoor vergewe nie!”

Hy sal sorg. Stille nag!

brand?” “Vir die begrafnis baas Rod.” “WATTER DONNERSE BEGRAFNIS?” “Van jou vrou baas Rod. Sy het een aand hier aangekom en vir niemand vertel sy kom nie. Ek het gedog dis ‘n rower, toe slaan ek haar dood met die baas se nuwe visstok…..STILTE... NOG LANGER STILTE….. EINDELIK… “Philemon, as jy my nuwe visstok gebreek het, is jy baie diep in die k@k!!”

doen? Is daar probleme?” “Um. “My papagaai? Dood? Waaraan is hy dood?” “Hy het vrot vleis geëet baas Rod.” “Vrot vleis? “Dooie perd? Watter dooie perd?” “Die thoroughbred baas Rod.” “My pryswenner-perd is dood?”

“Yebo. Hy’s dood van al die harde werk om die waterkar te trek.” “Is jy nou gerook? Watter waterkar?” “Die een wat ons gebruik het om die vuur dood te maak, baas Rod.” “Goeie genugtig, van watse vuur praat jy?” “Die een in jou huis baas Rod. Die kers, hy het geval en die gordyne aan die brand gesteek.” “Wat de ongeluk…Wil jy nou sê die huis het afgebrand deur ‘n kers wat omgefoeter het?” “Yebo.” “Maar daar’s mos elektrisiteit by die huis. Preholiday checklist

Leave your home in a good condition before leaving for holidays.

I

T is that time of year when families are gearing up for their summer getaway. You have your mind on what to pack, booking flights, hotels and planning your itinerary. Wash, dry and put away your laundry before you leave so that all you have to do when you get back is wash the clothes you used on holiday. But before you leave, consider getting your home ready for your return. With these handy tips, you can rest easy knowing your house is in order making your ‘back to reality’ transi-

tion that much smoother. • Clean the fridge Donate any food that will expire while you’re away. If possible, freeze the food. Also take care to wipe down your counters and shelves before you leave. • Tackle the laundry Coming back to a pile of laundry is not the best way to arrive home. Wash, dry and put away your laundry before you leave so that all you have to do when you get back is wash the clothes you used on holiday.

• Tidy the house As your time departure day approaches you’re so ready for your break that you could be tempted to just leave everything as it is and deal with it when you get back. As tempting as this is, don’t do it. You’ll be glad to come home to a clean and tidy house. Don’t leave any dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher, take out the trash, sweep or vacuum the floors, and dust and wash down the bathrooms. • Safety Set timers on a few outdoor and in-

door lights, especially the living room and bedroom to discourage thieves. Make sure your windows are closed to prevent rain from getting in and locked for safety. Unplug your automatic garage door to keep thieves from opening it with a universal remote or getting in by cracking the code. Be discreet about posting your getaway details on social media. • Be energy efficient Unplug your appliances, computers, electronics and other items that are not needed while you are away. Ac-

cording to Eskom, many appliances use power even when they’re turned off. • Miscellaneous essentials Make arrangements for your pets. If you’re taking your pet with you or will be boarding him, don’t leave food in his dish. Have a trusted neighbour or relative water your plants and collect your mail. Ask them to keep an eye on the house for any problems and also arrange to have any bills that are due while you are away paid. - Property24.

Who is responsible for outgoing contractor defects? WHEN it comes to construction contracts, it is not uncommon for a contractor to be replaced with an alternative contractor prior to completion of the works. This is according to Director Adine Abro and Senior Associate Muhammed Somrey from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr’s Dispute Resolution Practice, who say should an employer require that the incoming contractor assume responsibility for remedying defects or damages caused by an outgoing contractor, it would be prudent for the employer to ensure that this is expressly stated in the agreement. They say failure to do so, as can be seen from the case of Trencon Construction (Pty) Ltd v South African Airways (Pty) Ltd and another [2015] JOL 33366 (GJ), may result in the employer being left wanting. Trencon and SAA concluded a Joint Building Contracts Committee (JBCC) Principal Building Agreement for the construction of a departure lounge at OR Tambo International Airport, wherein a principal agent was also appointed. Trencon sought payment in the sum of R552 040.38 from SAA, alternatively, that the principal agent be ordered to issue a final payment certificate in the claimed amount. SAA and the principal agent contended that there were defects in the works which had to be remedied before a certificate of final completion could be issued, and argued that Trencon was not entitled to payment as it had not complied with its obligations in terms of clause 8.2 of the agreement, which stated that “The contractor shall make good any physical loss and repair damage to the works, including clearing away and removing from site, all debris resulting therefrom,

which occurs after the date on which the possession of the site is given and up to the issue of the deemed certificate of final completion and resulting from...” It was argued that the intention of SAA was to have the works completed, and thus it could not have been intended that, despite the appointment of Trencon to complete the works, that the contractor could receive payment without the works having been completed. This argument was found not to accord with the intention of the parties as appeared from the unambiguous written terms of the agreement. It was common cause that the defects were not caused by Trencon, but by the contractor, TL Steward, who had preceded Trencon’s appointment. In addition, there was no contention that the loss or damage occurred after the date on which possession of the site was given to Trencon. The court held that Trencon was not responsible to make good the loss or repair the damage, there being no other provision in the agreement which rendered the incoming contractor liable to do so. Further, the court held that as the loss or damage did not occur after the date on which possession of the site was given to Trencon, it was not Trencon’s responsibility to make good the loss or repair the damage in question. It should be noted that in the latest edition of the JBCC Principal Building Agreement, published in 2014, the phrase ‘which occurs after the date on which the possession of the site is given’, that appears in the 2005 and 2007 editions, has been omitted. – Property24.

Uber launches selfdriving pilot in San Francisco with Volvo Cars U

BER, the ridesharing technology company, is expanding its selfdriv ing pilot to San Francisco, California, using speciallyconverted selfdriving Vol vo XC90 premium SUVs. The move marks the next phase in a deepening alliance between Volvo and Uber after the two companies signed an agreement in August 2016 to establish a

jointlyowned project to build base vehicles that can be used to develop fully autono mous driverless cars. These cars were initial ly tested in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The latest cars to be used in San Francis co have been built by Volvo and sold to Uber, after which Uber’s own selfdriving hard ware and software package has been add ed, most visibly in the roofmounted control

apparatus. These cars will drive around the streets of San Francisco autonomously, but as part of the pilot programme they will at all times have an Uber technician on board to super vise the car’s operation. “The promise of selfdriving ride sharing is becoming a reality,” says Mårten Leven stam, vice president product planning at Volvo Cars. “Volvo is proud to be at the forefront of UMZUMBE MUNICIPALITY the latest devel opments in the UMASIPALA WASEMZUMBE automotive world alongside our C/o P.O. Box 561 Tel: c/o 039 972 0005 partners at Uber.” HIBBERDENE Fax: c/o 039 972 0099 The alliance with Uber forms 4220 E-mail: umzumbe@umzumbe.gov.za one part of Vol vo’s threepart plan to develop autonomous driving (AD) tech nologies. In January 2017 it will begin a Unemployed Graduates 12 months’ experiential training project entitled Remuneration: R3500.00 pa Drive Me, which Applications are invited from Unemployed Graduates with the following will be the world’s qualifications: largest autono mous driving test in which up to 100

AD cars will be given to members of the pub lic to be driven on real roads around Gothen burg, Sweden. Their experiences will be used to codevelop Volvo’s AD cars. The second part is a joint venture with Autoliv, the leading automotive safety technology company, to set up a new joint lyowned company to design and manufac turer separatelybranded AD and driver as sistance software technology packages for sale to third party OEMs. The new company will have its head quarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, and an ini tial workforce taken from both companies of around 200, increasing to over 600 in the medium term. The company is expected to start operations in the beginning of 2017. The third part is the ongoing relation

ship with Uber to build and codevelop base vehicles for AD cars. This deal reduces Vol vo’s developments costs, gives it a chance to develop cutting edge technology and could ultimately boost sales significantly. The base vehicles are manufactured by Volvo and then purchased from Volvo by Uber. Volvo Cars and Uber are contributing a combined USD 300m to the project. Both Uber and Volvo will use the same base vehi cle for the next stage of their own autono mous car strategies. The cars to be used in San Francisco are developed on Volvo Cars’ fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). SPA is one of the most advanced car architec tures in the world and is currently used for Volvo Cars’ topoftheline, multiple awardwinning XC90 SUV, as well as the S90 premium sedan and V90 premium es tate. SPA has been developed as part of Vol vo Cars’ USD 11bn global industrial transfor mation programme, which started in 2010, and has been prepared from the outset for the latest autonomous drive technologies as well as next generation electrification and connectivity developments. It is these capabilities that attracted Uber to Volvo.

Ford GT deliveries begin THE first road-going version of the all-new 2017 Ford GT has rolled off the line – heralding the beginning of production of the long-awaited halo car from Ford Performance. In this new, low-volume assembly facility at Multimatic in Markham, Ontario, Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, global product development, and chief technical officer, marked the milestone by driving a Ford GT off the assembly line. “When we kicked off 2016, we had two primary objectives for our Ford GT supercar – to excel at Le Mans, and to start deliveries before year-end,” says Nair. “We’ve achieved both.”

“For everyone involved in designing and developing this car, including all of our employees and suppliers, this is a moment to celebrate,” he adds. “The all-new Ford GT is a showcase of our strength in innovation and our commitment to delivering more for our customers – especially related to lightweight materials, aerodynamics and EcoBoost® engine technologies.” Ford GT was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2015. Less than two years later, Ford Performance is now delivering the first cars to customers around the globe. For more information on Ford GT, please visit www.fordgt.com. - Supplied.

Three excellent holiday reads >> Dr Jack’s Third Illustrated South African Byrd Book is targeted specifically at SA twitchers...

T

HESE are some of the great satirical and humorous books in book shops right now, so why not tickle someone’s funny bone with one of these perfect Christmas reads. • Dr Jack’s Third Illustrated South African Byrd Book Dr Jack Struik Nature YOU definitely do not need to be a birdwatcher to love Dr Jack’s new book, Dr Jack’s Third Illustrated South African Byrd Book. Picture-driven, it features a collection of cartoons that lampoon birds on the basis of their common names. Dr Jack draws on some existing material, but also turns to the renaming of a number of southern African birds for fresh inspiration. This is the third offering from Dr Jack, who received his national diploma for graphic design at the Pretoria Technikon and then worked as official artist for South Africa’s National Parks Board. His first book, Dr Jack’s Illustrated South African Byrd Book, was a surprise success that reprinted twice, and was followed a year later by Dr Jack’s Illustrated Second South African Byrd Book. Dr Jack’s Third Illustrated South African Byrd Book is targeted specifically at SA twitchers, as well as more relaxed bird watchers and nature lovers in general. It’s fabulous and funny, and the perfect affordable gift for the birder in your life who already has everything else. • Madam & Eve: Take Us to Your Lead er Stephen Francis and Ricu Jacana IT is hard to believe the Anderson family and their domestic sidekick, Eve, have been part of our daily landscape for 23 years. Madam & Eve cartoons appear regularly in the Mail & Guardian , The Star, The Saturday Star, Herald , Mer-

cury, Witness, Daily Dispatch, Cape Times, Pretoria News, Diamond Fields Advertiser, Die Volksblad, EC Today, Kokstad Advertiser and The Namibian. This year’s collection, Madam & Eve: Take us to your leader, offers more cartoons looking at domestic life

and politics in the New South Africa. Laughter is the best medicine and you can look forward to plenty of that in this witty and smart collection. • Zapiro – Dead President Walking Zapiro Jacana ZAPIRO comes of age in this 21st

annual. Zuma once again takes centre stage for all the wrong reasons along with his cronies the Guptas and his nemesis Malema. It’s also the year of the hashtag — #RhodesMustFall begat #FeesMustFall, also #Racism/#Sexism and #ZumaMustFall — but with Nenegate

and Sars wars, it’s the rand that’s really falling. Meanwhile, Pravin and Thuli continue to fight the good fight. Each cartoon in this collection is worth 1 000 words and helps us make sense of our crazy, beautiful country where fact is indeed stranger than fiction.

HE Lower South Coast SPCA invites golfers and families to its annual Santa’s Grand Slam Golf Day which will be held this Friday at the Port Shepstone Country Club. Michael Muller of Lower South Coast SPCA said this golf day used to be run by Ken and Eric Robinson together with Ray Coole and has been on the golfing calendar for the past 19 years. “This was done under the Leisure Brands flag in aid of the Lower South Coast SPCA. This year however both Ken and Eric have retired and sold the business. Fortunately the third remarkable patron of this wonderful event, Ray Coole is still involved,” said Muller. He said SPCA will be continuing with the grand slam in honour of these three remarkable gentlemen who have given so much to animal welfare on the South Coast over the past 19 years. “The golf day is aimed at generating much needed funds for the Lower South Coast SPCA’s operational costs. This season’s number of animals admitted to the SPCA has been far above the expected number and with another 10 days to go in December and the dreaded fireworks on New Year’s, this is sure to increase drastically,” he said. Muller said there are still a few 4-balls available. To sponsor and brand a tee costs R500, a full hole (tee and green) costs R1 000 and to become a title sponsor for the event, contact Michael Muller, Pat or Toy on 039 312 0962 or email support@spcalowersouthcoast.co.za or on 060 502 042.

PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com DESPITE the bad weather, Ya2i and Hospice held a well-attended fun walk at Uvongo Beach recently with the aim to officially introduce the Ya2i programme to the community. The programme educates on living a safe and healthy lifestyle.

Hospice fund-raising co-ordinator Beatrice King said HIV tests were also conducted. “Had the weather been slightly more favourable, we would have had even better participation. The support and spirit of Ya2i shone the light through the dull weather and made it a true enjoyable morning in the rain,” said King.

Selborne’s upcoming events SELBORNE Golf Club will be hosting a number of events this festive season. Still to come is a monthly Par 3 Challenge which is a competition that originated this year where golfers are given the opportunity to play a quicker round of golf on a familiar course but in a different format. The challenge will be held on Friday, 23 December from 12.30pm. Cara Giraudeau, public relations manager at Media Olivia Jones said this challenge will follow both individual and betterball stableford formats with the top-six best balls counted, per player, out of 12 rounds played. “The following day will be Selborne’s Christmas Eve lunch with seating from 12pm to 2.30pm. It will be a buffet-style feast held at the

Selborne Clubhouse,” she said. Giraudeau said the cost is R200 per person and numbers are limited and urged those who are interested to book before the day. Selborne Golf Club will also host a New Year’s Eve bash, which will also incorporate a golf competition to be played in a Texas scramble format. The format is more fun and each player hits a tee shot-on. The best ball, as determined by the captain, is selected for the second shot, each member of the team hits his or her shot from that spot. The process continues until the hole is played out. For more information on bookings contact www.selborneparkgolfestate.com or call 087 135 0559. - Supplied.
