A number of reasons to celebrate

south coast This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. HANKS to an observant local resident, a fuel spill into a Margate river was spotted on time, leading to a team of experts being dispatched to the site to assess and contain the damage. On Friday, the resident took pictures of a shimmering slick in the Nkongweni River that turned out to be a mixture of diesel and petrol. The river runs next to the Sasol filling station on National Road into the ocean. Ugu Municipality spokesperson France Zama said a complaint about the spillage was received on Friday and a preliminary investigation revealed that it was as a result of about 40 litres of fuel from the filling station. “The fuel mix entered the storm-water drainage system which drained down towards the river. Due to the debris and sand in the storm-water drainage system, some of the diesel

content was trapped thereby minimising the level of contamination,” said Zama. In line with the contingency guidelines developed by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Department Water and Sanitation, Zama said the owner was required to source services of specialists to render the environment safe as a matter of urgency. When contacted, the filling station’s owner Allister Edwardes confirmed that the spillage emanated from his business, but said it was as a result of an error by his staff. “After it was brought to my attention, I immediately brought in the services of a company that deals with spillages and a clean-up was done. I can confirm everything is clear,” said Edwardes. In an email, Norman Moss of Spilltech, the company that was sourced by Edwardes, confirmed that only a small amount of the fuel made it into river because of debris in the pipe. He said absorbents and containment materials were placed at certain sections of the river and these were removed on Saturday after further inspections were made. According to a study done at the University of Zululand in 2013, diesel and other oil-based pollutants have a devastating effect on the environment as they contaminate the soil, causing a pH imbalance and prevent seed germination. It can also be harmful to other water organisms. It has not been determined what effects the spillage will have on the river.

Sting operation nets suspects TWO men, in their thirties, were arrested in Shelly Beach in a crime intelligence operation on Friday. Detective Warrant Officer Herman Pienaar from the Ugu Cluster and members of his drug unit team as well as members from Crime Intelligence Unit acted on information and launched a sting operation. They found the men in possession of crack cocaine with a street value of R400. Both face a charge of dealing in drugs and will appear in court soon. On Friday evening a special operation was held in the Southport policing area by members from the Ugu Cluster, K9 unit, Tactical Response Team, Southport police, Vehicle Inspection Section and Road Traffic Inspectorate. During roadblock and cordon-and-search operations, 102 people, 16 premises and 48 vehicles were searched. Police arrested eight people for possession of dagga, one person for possession of a dangerous weapon, four for being drunk in public, one for a road traffic offence and one illegal immigrant. Brigadier Bongani Sibiya, deputy cluster commander of Ugu Cluster, was in charge of the operation. He expressed his satisfaction with the operation especially in view of the fact that the Southport area showed a very low crime figure over the weekend. - Supplied.

Foreign national arrested with cellphones, laptop W

HILE Southport police were busy with a stop-and search-operation in the Sea Park area last Thursday, they went to a compound and found a person in a room with several cellphones in his possession. When proof of ownership of the cellphones was requested, he told police that he was repairing them for other people, but could not produce any receipts. At the time he was sitting on his bed and when police asked him to stand up, he hesitated and became aggressive. It was then discovered that he was sitting on a laptop concealed underneath him. He could not produce any

receipt for the laptop either. “He also could not produce any legal documents to be in South Africa as he is a foreign national. He was arrested and detained,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. Southport police are investigating a charge of possession of suspected stolen property as well as a charge of contravening the Immigration Act in conjunction with Home Affairs Department. Investigations are continuing. Anyone who recognises any of the items, should contact Detective Warrant Officer Henry van Vuuren on 039 681 9900. - Supplied.

The crash left one person seriously injured. ONE person sustained serious in juries and two others endured moderate injuries after a car ac cident in Marburg on Monday evening. Kwazulu Private Ambulance paramedics arrived at the Mar burg traffic lights where one person was still trapped in the vehicle. “It appears that it was a

A MINIBUS taxi rear-ended a motor car in Southbroom on the R61 on Thursday morning after the driver tried to avoid a duiker that was running across the road causing a traffic jam. Belinda Catchpole of Kwazulu Private Ambulance said no serious injuries were reported.

“Witnesses at the scene indicate that traffic was brought to a standstill when the duiker was running around, unfortunately, it was on a bend and the minibus came from behind and hit the car in front,” she said SAPS were on scene to investigate. - Supplied.

HE homeless and the elderly will be left without a roof over their heads at the end of September as the shelter they are staying

in will close down. The Nehemia Upliftment Centre, the former Umtentweni Hotel, has been ordered to evacuate the premises after failing to pay for electricity and water. A pensioner from the centre, who asked to remain anonymous told

the Fever that she and three other elderly residents don’t know where they will be going after they were asked to find alternative accommodation. She said other people from the shelter moved out and its only the three of them who are having trouble finding

a place to live. She said a court order issued by the Durban High Court was issued to the manager a while ago. Pastor Freddie Venter, who has been running the shelter for some time, confirmed they have to evacuate the premisses by the

end of the month. The pastor, however, said there are 19 people who still live there, not three. “We were able to get accommodation for most of the people but we are still trying to see what is going to happen to those who have not yet found place,” said Venter. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April has confirmed that there is a problem at the shelter and that the municipality is dealing with the management of the building. “Yes, I can confirm that there are litigations with regards to the building as a result of non-compliance with building requirements and also failure to pay the necessary bills,” said April. The pensioner said the biggest concern for the elderly is that at other centres and retirement homes there are waiting lists and are expensive as they are dependant solely on their government pension.

How to save money at the store: • Make a grocery list and stick to it. • Focus on sale items. • Pricematch and look at sale papers in the newspaper. • Take a rain check if a store runs out of an item advertised on special. • Buy first, then meal plan. On ly write down sale items on your grocery list. Pricematch the best deals each week and then research new meals to prepare with the items you bought on sale. • Don’t shop hungry because you have less patience and less selfcontrol. • Know average prices so you can spot a good deal. • If it’s on sale, stock up. • Buy generic. cashcowcouple.com says she has no choice but to leave out certain items from her toiletries list, such as talcum powder. “I can do without it. I have also cut down on buying meat products. Chicken is much cheaper so I buy that. The only thing that’s going to save us is a raise in our state pensions next year. Free diabetes screenings held THE Shelly Beach Lions held another free blood sugar screening clinic at the Shelly Centre on Saturday. The event was well supported and in total 155 free blood tests were performed. Out of those, 17 known diabetics tested out of normal range and nine people tested out of range and were referred for further medical advice and medication. In addition, the Lions donated five new blood-sugar test units to those who needed them for self-testing and treatment at home. Staff of the Kwazulu Natal Private Ambulance Services were also on hand to do blood pressure testing at the clinic. This project is a key focus point for Lions Clubs International and a major commitment by the Shelly Lions towards public health services. - Supplied.

ANSA held its annual Staff and Volunteers Awards last Tuesday at the Cansa Durban Care Centre, where they recognised hardworking volunteers and staff who go out of their way to support Cansa. Many volunteers from the South Coast were recognised for their enthusiasm, energy and drive in assisting Cansa. They were also commended for creating awareness and raising funds for the organisation. Ntombifuthi Ngubane from Umzumbe was awarded for “creating awareness”. Michelle Carless was awarded for the Cansa Relay for Life initiative, and Ryan Ringo of Umthunzi Hotel and Conference Centre was awarded for hosting Cansa’s special events. Debbie and Michelle Cuppan were awarded The Spirit of Cansa Award and the Precious Gumede from Fever, was awarded for the market-

FTER an exciting fund-raising month, Ninette Smith and Swish have finally left for Spain to compete in the Agility World Championships. We wish them the very best of luck and hope they will return having shared a wonderful experience with memories that will last a life time. While they are in Spain we will be competing in our own championship weekend from 23 to 25 September. We are fortunate to have two out-of-town judges as well as our local judges Nicki Calvert and Heather Moorcroft.

The public is invited to join us on the Port Shepstone Borough Field that weekend. Harbour View Spar is sending their food cart so there will be food as well. This is an annual event and we hope to attract as many competitors and spectators as possible. The following weekend, members and their dogs will be taking the CGC (canine good citizen) test at the club. This is an obedience test which is divided into three categories, i.e. bronze, which is the first stage and involves basic obedience, silver, which is

more difficult and involves among others the ability to walk in a public place and cross a road without bolting. The final stage is the gold where the dog is required to follow the “down” command from a distance, stay in one place for two minutes and go to its bed when asked to do so. A good “down” could save your dog’s life. All this training is done with positive reinforcement patience and love. Once the dog has the three certificates he is considered a good canine citizen and will hopefully be allowed in places where other dogs dare not tread. We have had an occasion where one of our members relocated and moved into a complex where they allowed small dogs but hers was considered too big. The Body Borporate changed their minds when presented with three certificates and rosettes, and they are now living very happily in their new home. This test commences at 8.30am on Saturday 1 October at Hibiscus Kennel Club and anyone interested may pay us a visit and watch the dogs being put through their paces. We remind members that training starts at 2pm with Orientation and Beginners Agility until 2.45pm. We then move to our respective classes for Obedience until 3.45pm and Advanced Agility ends the afternoon at 4pm. As much as we are thankful for the rain the weather has not been kind to us for weeks and weeks and attendance is down. Rest assured the field is looking good and training has been taking place - we always make a plan. Anyone wishing to join the club may contact the chairperson Sharon Derman 073 601 4622 or Jenny Robertson the training co-ordinator 083 250 4253.

Quintin van Jaarsveld: reus in â€˜n rystoel JOHAN PRETORIUS

D

“Ek is in ‘n normale, nie-gevaarlike duikslag oombliklik verlam weens ‘n fraktuur aan my C5-werwel.

“My ouers was ongelooflik ‌ jy weet

Hy skryf uitsluitlik in Engels.

My verhouding met Jesus Christus, my Verlosser en Saligmaker, groei elke dag. Quintin is voorwaar uniek. In ‘n joernalistieke loopbaan van meer as vyftig jaar, het ek nog nooit so ‘n inspirerende en bewonderenswaardige persoonlikheid ontmoet nie. Dis ‘n absolute voorreg om hom te ken. Die Suidkus-gemeenskap kan trots wees op hom.

TOURISM 360

Mayor calls for teamwork towards service delivery JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

Taxman and others, cometh FOR many years and throughout South Africa, some people who own second or third homes in one or other popular destination have, on an ad hoc basis, hired out their properties usually during peak season and at peak prices. They see this as a means of not only realising a nice income but also to offset things like rates, levies and maintenance costs. When the incomegenerating weeks have come and gone, these owners have the lux ury of their paidfor getaways for the rest of the year. Some would say that this is a prudent way to own holiday homes, but unfortunately, these unethical parttime tourism practitioners do not always declare their rental incomes so in essence are in transgression of our tax regimen. Furthermore it is likely that the said properties are not on the municipal books as a form of commercial enterprise which has ramifications in terms of rates and local authorisations, etc. I guess that municipali ties are losing significant rates and other revenues as a result of nondisclosure of commercial activity by owners keeping under the radar. In our hospitality industry and among our member

ship there are very committed owners and proprietors who ensure that they are compliant with all govern ment and SARS requirements so it is a great pity that their honest operations can be undermined by certain unscrupulous people earning the proverbial buck by bucking the system. It is grossly unfair that properties that do comply, pay taxes, advertise and register with all sorts of tour ism organisations (all at cost) are from time to time faced with competition on an uneven playing field. I know that the authorities are looking into this so that all incomederiving properties are properly regis tered with SARS, local authorities and tourism organi sations and that letting agencies are compelled to en sure that properties are compliant in this regard. It won’t be long before some sort of inspector goes knocking on doors armed with a mandate to fine or intention to prosecute. Before the busy summer season comes around, I really urge those who are contemplating cashing in on tourism’s sacred cow to make sure they have all the right registrations in place we have a membership of ficer who can assist. So if you see somebody beneath a deerstalker, tweed attired, stooping over a magnifying glass and being towed by a salivaspewing bloodhound, it could be the day the authorities decided to act firmly against those who are not playing ball. TO improve stakeholder relations and service delivery provision the Ugu District Mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza calls for a more active citizenry where the community col laborates with the municipality to improve the district. Mnyayiza made this pro nouncement at his first public con sultation meeting at Breamer Hall, KwaNzimakwe, during the Water Awareness Campaigns being con ducted by the municipality on Mon day. During his address, he highlight ed the importance of community dialogue saying it’s these plat forms that we as government weigh ourselves against on the ef fectiveness of our services to the community. “Community meetings are a laboratory where we analyse and find remedies for service delivery deficiencies. This platform should also be utilised to instil a collabora tive approach towards service de livery. “Our approach in the imple mentation of municipal service de

livery initiatives is not to isolate the community, but incorporate the traditional methods and work with tribal authorities, councillors and ward committees to reap the fruit of our collective effort.” At the meeting the kwa Nzimakwe community were given a chance to raise their concerns about water provision, sighting shortfalls while at the same time talking about service delivery im provements. We shared with the community the progress plans on the develop ment of water infrastructure which have benefitted Nkoneni which for the first time has access to water. The second phase of this project to be implemented within this fi nancial year and includes the ex tension of the pipeline reticulation to cover a wider reach to the Kwa Nzimakwe community. The negative effects of water theft and vandalism of infrastruc ture were extensively addressed by both the community and the mu nicipality. While we as the municipality understand the frustrations of the community about the limited ac cess to water, households that con sume reticulated water without a proper, authorised metered device are deemed illegal. “Households must apply for water connection through the mu nicipality and technicians will be

Ugu District Municipality may or Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza. deployed to assess the applicant’s household for possible connec tion.” A plea is made to all communi ties throughout the district to ac tively participate in the curbing of water and infrastructure theft by utilising the available mediums to report such unlawful acts. Those who report these thefts can remain anonymous and report crime on 0801 111 660, fax 086 522 2816, email informa tion@whistleblowing.co.za or write to PO Box 51006, Musgrave, 4001. Ugu District Municipality pro motes working together to create an environment that is friendly, re sponsive, accountable, effective and efficient for our communities. “Ugu District is better today than it was yesterday.”

Fat cats splurge, poor rummage in debris INSTEAD of perpetrating violent crimes certain groups of people are engaging in other illegal activities in order to survive. Many accept payment for installing illegal, electrical connections, resulting in burnt skin and maiming. Starving immigrants are involved in illegal mining at Langlaagte. In this economic climate, where corruption prevails, our fat-cat parliamentary leaders and their buddies are indulging in a lavish and decadent life-style – splurging on exorbitant salaries, luxury vehicles, expensive

holidays, meals and entertainment. How can these two life modes concur? Abject poverty is a stark contrast against excessive, unimaginable wealth. The media publishes the persistent arson and destruction of public property, viz. the universities by destructive students, who have acquired a heritage of violence from the ANC. One can only conclude that these destructive students are devoid of insight and intelligence. Work, study and motivation ethics are lacking. The solution is to close the univer-

sities indefinitely. No government or private agency has sufficient resources to fund the restoration of these institutions. (Yet the university has permitted the arsonists to return to the university). Around the turn of the century, the government could have provided every South African with a good quality of life, by offering employment, building houses and providing basic needs in a country with an ideal climate. Instead, a philosophy of “me for myself” prevails. Carte Blanche screened a pro-

Sanitary towels should be accessible INSTEAD of promoting the new and free flavoured condoms, the government should rather heed the call by the students of the University of the Witwatersrand, who are demanding that the government do away with the “tampon tax”, which is the major cause of hygiene products becoming increasingly unaffordable for women. In addition, the campaign is also calling on the management of Wits to provide free sanitary towels to women. While the prevention of HIV/Aids is important, promoting the new condoms is disingenuous. Sanitary products and menstrual hygiene are basic human necessities and rights, and not luxuries. If condoms can be freely available to all, then

there is no reason why essential items like sanitary pads cannot be freely available from public hospitals and clinics. According to reports, an estimated seven million girls miss school for some days every month because of a lack of access to hygiene products to take care of themselves during that time of the month. Girls in learning institutions should not be deprived of education because of a problem that is easily resolvable. Helping girls to manage menstruation can improve school and university attendance. I support the call for sanitary towels to be made accessible to the less privileged females in our country. Mohamed Saeed

It might have been academic all these years, but now, with foreign imports making an entrance in the South African market, the public is only too aware of the content of water being pumped into chickens to increase their weight. Chicken is the cheapest form of poultry for the poorest consumers, but if these poor consumers have to

ASER Force Security is moving to new premises at 979 Marine Driver as from 23 September, making it more visible to its clients and potential customers. The security company has made a lot of changes to enhance the quality of service its clients receive as their security provider. Masers owners Antony Apostolate and Joffre Hannaway said one of the changes is to shift from reactive security providers to a proactive security provider. “Our clients will witness the visibility of our vehicles doing regular patrols through the various areas and stopping suspicious looking characters and questioning them. This will increase our visibility in our clients’ areas and hopefully will act as an increased deterrent to potential criminals wanting to create trouble,” said Apostoldes. The security provider has also employed two managers who will regularly check in two areas and ensure its reaction officers give clients the service they deserve.

“Both managers come from a military background and are highly trained. Extra technical staff have also been employed and have lessened the load on the existing technicians.” Maser urges clients to make use of its technicians and not use private contractors as they will not take responsibility for any faults to security systems especially if it has been worked on by someone else other than Maser Security technicians. The security provider has also improved the way they access a client’s property by introducing its guard cell system which enables them to install a receiver onto the client’s gate, and which can only be accessed by a Masers Armed Response or supervisor vehicles by means of encrypted code, stored in the control room and transmitted by a keypad in their vehicles. Apostolides said they encourage clients to have this system installed on their electric gates as the upside is that access to the properties will much more secure. “Maser would like to thank clients for the continuous support and looks forward to making a difference to the safety and security

of its clients and their possessions in general. “We are more than confident that these changes will make a big difference to the community and will lead to a reduction of crime.”

AXINE’S Nail and Hair in Sebenza Village has welcomed a new addition to their team of stylists. Alyssa Williams comes with lots of experience and has worked and spent most of her life in salons as her mother was, and is still a hairstylist. She worked full time in salons in Johannesburg since 2010 and recently relocated to the South Coast. Alyssa is fully qualified and specialises in tints and highlights as she loves to play with colour. Alyssa's beauty tip: “The best thing any woman or man for that matter can do for their appearance is to forget what seems to be the in style - do things that suit you,

your personality and your lifestyle. There are so many people that do tints or styles that just aren't them and they don’t feel as amazing as they should. Play with colours, tones and styles until you find something that screams who you are. “I also find it helpful to give my clients colours and styles that are designed to last longer and look just as good a month later as they did two weeks after the appointment. “Choose colours and ways of applying them that last, use techniques that hide the visible regrowth, styles that don’t lose their edge and you'll never have a bad hair day again.”

HE Lower South Coast SPCA will be adopting out animals of a different nature this Friday. The 16 staff members of Just Property Margate will be joining our furry friends in the adoption kennels. For them to be able to go back to their “forever homes” they will need to raise an adoption fee while in the kennel. Most staff members have different fees to raise and that is based on a number of factors including the dog’s pedigree and how well they are house-trained. Readers are asked to help them reach their goals in a number of ways and to first see who they would like to see adopted. Use “JP” and the adoptee name as a reference. After that make an EFT or direct deposit towards their adoption cost to: LSC SPCA, Standard Bank, Branch: 057528, Account number: 053272552 Or drop off a donation towards the adoption fee at the SPCA Uvongo, SPCA Charity Shop Harbour SHOWTIMES FRI 23 SEP- THU 29 SEP SHOWS, PRICES & TIMES SUBJECT TO CHANGE. W

HILE the country and the rest of the world watch in disbelief as continuing government agency spats move our economy closer to the edge of a cliff we have a new committee set up to look into the recovery of our struggling stateowned enterprises. Jacob Zuma has appointed himself as chairperson of this committee. This can only be for one of two reasons. Either, in a display of leadership, the country’s top civil servant wants to be hands on because he understands that turning the likes of Eskom and SAA around is crucial to avoiding sovereign debt downgrades, or more likely, he wants to be close to the action to protect himself and his connections from

the fallout should long suspected shenanigans be exposed. Anyway, as dire and scary as the outcome of these political power games may be, we need to get our heads down and do what we can to address the challenges we face in this part of the world. Our major challenges are youth unemployment (especially in rural areas), income inequality, lack of economic opportunity and rural development. On the plus side we have worldclass tourism attractions and supporting infrastructure, a proactive tourism organisation, several organisations purporting to represent organised business and agriculture, manufacturing infrastructure, commercial infrastructure, agricultural infrastructure, good schools, FET colleges and a

municipality with a clean audit report. So what’s the problem? The problem is protection of vested interests. The problem is a culture of self-enrichment. The problem is greed. I refuse to accept that if the orchestrated focus of all stakeholders genuinely shifted to uplifting the lives of everyone instead of just a chosen constituency, these challenges could be overcome relatively easily. I leave the reader with an example of what I mean. A wonderfully inclusive poultry abattoir project was initiated in the area some time ago. As part of the co-operative project, in excess of 1 500 rural community members were to have their lives changed by rearing and receiving payment for slaughter stock. Unfortunately, due to greed, this project has now stalled. Millions

of rands worth of worldclass infrastructure is going to ruin. Personally, I don’t give a damn about the infrastructure because that can be salvaged. What we should all give a damn about is that the hopes of 1 500 members of our rural community have been dashed. - Oneway Business Solutions www.onewaybusinessser vices.co.za

Top business news BUSINESS REPORTER AFRICA’S biggest bank by market value, FirstRand, warns that ongoing conflict between government agencies coupled with the weak balance sheets of state owned enterprises has added significant financial risk to the SA economic outlook. FirstRand is the first of the country’s major lenders to reiterate concerns pending the upcoming review of South Africa’s investment rating before the end of this year. Following closely on the recent announcement of a 3.3% increase in GDP for the second quarter of the year (April to June), figures for July indicate slowing growth in

many sectors. Growth in manufacturing output slowed to below 1% and mining output actually contracted. According to analysts, the metal and engineering sector is of particular concern with an increased likelihood of further job losses. Earlier this week the JSE retreated to its lowest levels for almost a month. The all share index dropped 1.02% and gold mining shares fell 2.57%. Financial and resource shares followed the trend falling 1.46% and 1.95% respectively. Global markets are weaker overall as various comments emanating from the U.S. Federal Reserve seem to point toward an imminent hike in U.S. interest rates.

FTER a long 800km ride from Alberton to Southbroom Golf Course, 13 cyclists were welcomed home by families and friends - one of the cyclist did not take part as he was felt sick before the start of the ride. The ride was in aid of Pro Deo Care Group, an organisation that takes care of the sick and those with special needs. Pro Deo member Doreen Campbell said they are always grateful for cyclists who participate on this fundraising awareness ride. This year, more than R300 000 was raised and will go towards a number of projects the organisation is involved in. “The money this year will be used for expanding our cleaning services, we will invest in our Hospice project, assist young people with disabilities and some of it will go towards our school feeding programme,” said

EAMS braved the rain on Saturday to take part in a social volleyball tournament hosted by City Boyz Volleyball Club at Marburg sports grounds. The aim of the games is to return the sport to the South Coast. Allison Appalsamy, City Boyz Volleyball Club manager said the turnout was amazing with more ladies’ teams participating. “We are hoping to have more tournaments and return volleyball to its glory days of years gone by. The turnout increases with every tournament with more teams entering each time,” said Appalsamy. The final games were interrupted resulting in all teams agreeing that the leading team at that point would be the winners. The winners were Prowlers who defeated New Covenant Ladies, Non-Competitive NCC defeating Assassins Competitive and City Boys B defeating NCCP.
