A number of reasons to celebrate
TM
MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. ESPITE several calls to the Ugu District Municipality call centre on Saturday, nobody came out to determine whether a sewage spill was the cause of fish dying at Faerie Glen Eco-Estate. Faerie Glen resident Lee Kruger said he asked for a municipal manager or supervisor, but was told that nobody was available. “I was given a reference number
and never heard from anyone from Ugu again,” he said. While him and his wife Liz were walking through the estate, they noticed a strange smell. “It smelt like a sewage. We took a walk down to the river to feed the fish as we always do and noticed that some of them were dead, while others were battling to breath,” he said. Kruger said he also saw effluent on the river which indicated that a sewage spill had caused the fish to die.

When the Fever contacted Kruger on Tuesday, he said nobody from Ugu had come to the estate and that more fish had died. “This is an eco-estate. Nobody is allowed to have a pet and our duty as residents is to take care of the animal and plant life we are surrounded by. It’s shocking that the municipality does not care,” he added.
Effluent in the water. France Zama, spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality, said there was a minor sewage spill from the Margate 4A pump station leading to the Faerie Glen stream.

HE Gamalakhe police station, which has been operating from a prefabricated office for over two decades is falling apart due to a lack of maintenance. Police officers say the charge office door hinges are broken, resulting in it being loose and letting in winter wind throughout the day and night. A police officer, who is not authorised to talk to the media, said they have reported the broken door several times, but nothing has been done to fix it. “Some weeks ago the door came off its hinges and was diffi-

cult to close or open. Now the door is totally off the hinges and is lying against the side of the entrance.” “During the night there are only a few officers on duty and if it happens that most of them are out attending a call-out only one officer is left in the charge office and that person is not safe.” Last year a police officer was shot at the police station after a man walked in and opened fire. SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said he was unaware of the door situation, but would speak to the station commander about it. “Replacing door hinges is not hard work, it would not even take a full day,” said Mfeka.

ROWN water coming out of taps appears to have returned as residents in various locations are reporting the situation. People from Port Shepstone to Gamalakhe and other areas have also been complaining of the water having a mild salty taste. Ugu spokesperson France Zama said the discoloured water is the result of the drastically low levels of the reservoir that supplies Port Shepstone. He said the colour was caused by the sediment that has settled in reservoirs over the

years. “A team of technicians worked around the clock and flushed the system and pipelines,” said Zama. He assured the community that the water is safe to drink. “The municipality assures customers that the water supplied is within the South African National Drinking Standards SANS241 and is safe for human consumption,” he said, Zama said although clean water is being supplied, the team is continuing to flush and monitor the pipeline to remove the air in it and further ensure the total removal any muddy content that might still remain. He apologised to customers .

No sign of ‘slippery silvers’, yet CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com IF you’re wondering whether the slippery silvers will make an appearance in time for the July school holidays, the answer is sadly, no. Mike Anderson-Reade of the KwaZuluNatal Sharks Board said there is currently no sardine activity along the South Coast they are aware of. “No confirmed netting of any sardines has taken place off KZN this season to date,” said Anderson-Reade.

He said there have been many occasions where bait fish have been visible off almost the entire coast. “However, these have been confirmed to be a mixture of East Coast round herring (red eye sardines), mackerel, anchovy and maasbanker. “I believe there have been a few pilchards among them, but that is very common as these are all shoaling fish and mix from time to time.” He added it was still fairly early in the season and hopefully things pick up sometime soon.

Safety promoted in Uvongo
Sewage spills into Faerie Glen river “It was discovered that the spillage was as a result of signal loss of the telemetry system. “The system is used for early detection of any faults that may cause the malfunction of pump station which led to the overflow,” he said. Zama said a team of experienced technicians were deployed on site and were able to reboot the system to resume normal operations of the pump station. “Towards ensuring environmental health security, the municipality’s environmental health services has also visited the site to run water tests and ensure there is no serious contamination. “A clean-up process is also under way to ensure no further contamination occurs. “The municipality is currently devising means to prohibit the loss of signal to avoid such occurrences,” he said.

ANABA and Uvongo Community Policing Forums in conjunction with the SAPS, traffic department and security companies held a roadblock next to the Uvongo Birdpark last Wednesday. Safety tips and smiles were handed out to motorists from 9am to 11am. Manaba Community Safety Forum chairman Hennie van der Berg said the area has experienced an increase in the number of house breakings over the past few weeks. “Crime statistics would have been far worse had it not been for the effort by all the crime fighting teams operating in Uvongo and Manaba. We are very proud to be involved in this initiative and would like to extend our sincere thanks to all authorities involved,” said van der Berg. Principal Mavuso Mqadi said they are very happy about her achievement. SOUTHPORT woman has joined an international drive to help save Reef Carneson (7), a child who was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of five months. Annika Verheem urges all South Coasters to support her fund-raiser on Saturday, 2 July at Harbourview Spar. Her target is to sell 1 000 cupcakes at R10 each. “Harbourview Spar is going to bake the cupcakes for me. I would really like to sell all 1 000 of them and urge locals to please make this possible so we can help Baby Reef,” she said. Verheem is friends with the little one’s family, who are originally from Gauteng, but moved to the United States in 2011 so that Carneson could get the treatment he needs. He received a bone marrow transplant before his first birthday and his cancer was cured, but then he developed severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a complication that can
occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, which has left him with many problems. He cannot speak clearly, open his hands properly, he struggles to eat, is extremely small for his age, he can’t straighten his legs and lives with pain every day. Even now, six years later, the full extent of the damage caused to his internal organs is unknown. “Last year Baby Reef was diagnosed with a secondary skin cancer on his head and has to suffer the distress of a regime of harsh topical chemo cream,” said Verheem. Verheem is one of the many fund-raisers positioned all around the world who are trying to help Baby Reef. “Please open your heart and allow this little boy to creep in. Your generous donation, however small, will help ensure that he can continue to receive this life-saving treatment,” said Verheem. Once-off donations can be made by SMSing “Reef” to 38771 at a cost of R10.

HE Artists’ Gallery in Ramsgate was alive with artists, art lovers, good wine, art collectors and exquisite art works last Thursday. The reason being that the gallery was, and is, ablaze with a selection of Vincent Reid’s work. Reid is a pencil artist-extraordinaire and is considered one of the finest pencil artists in South Africa. He is one of the eight top notch artists in the collective at Artists’ Gallery. The Glass Room in the gallery houses an exquisite selection of Reid’s actual pencil originals - to have so many of these in one showing is unusual and a most worthy collection to witness. Two other walls in the gallery have been painted Vincent’s signature grey for his signed prints. His prints are available both on canvas and as unframed prints. Both the originals and prints are for sale. Actress and art lover Barbie Meyer opened the event with much hilarity and interesting titbits about the artist himself. Reid also has a signed, coffee table book of his works, available at the gallery - with only 25 in the edition. Reid was born and raised on a farm in Zimbabwe and admits he has always been an observer of the outdoors. After completing his schooling in Harare he studied design and worked for 18 years in the exhibition and events industry. He left to follow his heart and became a full-time artist in 2011 and has never looked back. His wife Tess has

They work and live in Howick with their two children.
“Pencil is my medium of choice because it is an extremely direct medium which satisfies my desire to express the deep contrasts and textures of my
predominantly very African subjects. I aim to capture those moments which represent the essence of the African outdoor experience,” Reid said.
The exhibition will remain up for a month and the gallery is open daily from 9am to 4pm. - Supplied.

PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com AS part of commemorating Youth Day last Thursday, the Heart to Heart Women and Children’s Foundation celebrated the day with Olwandle High School, hosting a number of speakers from government departments, including the SAPS, the Department of Health, Esayidi TVET College and those from religious backgrounds. The aim of the talks was to educate the youth about living responsibly and importance of education. Nomzamo Ndlovu, chair of Heart to Heart said in honouring South African heroes, who died on 16 June, 1976, the foundation felt that gathering these departments to educate the youth about women and children abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse and the importance of pursuing education is vital. Ndlovu said there are many pupils and women who are victims of domestic violence, which affects their education.
“We wanted to remind pupils about departments they can turn to if they have problems. “The SAPS is one where they can seek help if they are affected by any crime-related issues. The SAPS told pupils how they can avoid getting involved in crime. The Department of Health spoke about HIV testing and advised pupils how to take care of themselves. Scelo Ndlovu from the TVET College gave information about the easy accessible opportunity of getting academically qualified and the role TVET is playing in the community. Esayidi TVET focuses on electrical, mechanical and civil engineering, which are scarce skills and play a big part in economic development. Coming from a religious background Prophetess Nomcebo Msimango also gave a talk. Msimango said pupils should never be put off by their background when it comes to education. “You must trust in God and make sure you grab any educational opportunity with both hands,” she said.

New park for Protea Park residents CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com PROTEA Park, near Albersville, now has a park for residents. Although incomplete, families and children use the park’s facilities every day. Youth In Action, a group of youngsters, started the project at the beginning of the year. The park has been fitted with swings and a braai area. “There is more work to be done and we are waiting on the Hibiscus Coast Municipality to complete this
project. We are grateful to them for the work they have done so far,” said Calyn Pillay who is a member of the group. Security measures still have to be put in place and bins and lighting is still missing. There are also plans for a walking or running track, however the area designated for this still needs to be tarred. “It’s so good to see residents, especially the children, come and enjoy the facilities at the park. There is still work to be done, but we will get
there,” said Pillay. Union Plant Hire sponsored the grading of the property and has removed some of the dense bush. Youth In Action would like to assist other youth or organisations in other areas, with projects such as this. “Our aim is to have a facility like this in every suburb for locals to enjoy,” he said. IGHTEEN Ezinqoleni youths were awarded computer skills certificates by Ezinqoleni Community Library on 18 June as the municipality commemorated Youth Day. The youth have been attending a basic computer skills programme, run by the library during the year. The course was offered free with the aim of encouraging them to stay away from drugs and focus on channels that will benefit them in the future. One of the participants, Jacko Shabalala of Ward 5 eNkulu, spoke
about how the course helped him get off drugs. Shabalala admitted he had been on drugs for some time and by taking this course today he is drug-free. “Today I am living clean life. It is possible for one to stop drugs and live a clean life. I spend my time with God because he worked in me,” said Shabalala. At the event Cllr Mbatha encouraged the youth to stay away from drugs and focus on the programmes which make them better people. - Supplied.

OVC travel consultant Steff Boyd confirmed that Blose needs financial assistance for the programme. In an email Boyd said the total cost for the programme, including travel fees, accommodation and a visa, is R40 000. “The student work U.S. programme is open to South African university students and takes place it during our winter holiday season [November to December]. The students spend eight weeks working at the Gaylord Resort and on completion are given an option to travel for a month. “The programme offers students the chance to work as attraction attendants helping guests, taking photos and insuring guests have the best experience when visiting the resort,” said Boyd. Blose has also joined Go Get Funding, a crowd-funding website that allows one to raise money for anything that matters for them, from personal causes, events, projects and more. However, Blose has not received any sponsors on the site and asks the South Coast community to help her raise the required funds,

T’S all about uplifting and empowering women through selfhelp - that is the mission statement of Zamukukhuphuka-Khombindlela, an organisation for the rural women of St Faith’s, managed by Cathy Buchholz. The group, which now consists of 20 women, was established in 1980 and then later taken over by Buchholz in 2006. For many years these women sustained themselves through selling products they make from recyclable materials, sewing and growing vegetables. “The women in this area are faced with many challenges such as increasing poverty, high levels of crime, HIV/Aids and waste dumping,” said Buchholz. Current activities include collecting empty chips packets from schools and other places, which are then woven into place mats. The women also make shopping bags from material, not plastic, and wonder bags, which are used to keep meals hot for hours. Three vegetable tunnels are used
to grow fresh produce which is then sold to the public. “It doesn’t stop there. This group of enthusiastic women have plans for the future, but need assistance from locals and business owners,” said Buchholz. The organisation has plans to build a market shelter with six rooms and verandas from which to sell their products. The rooms will be rented out to individuals. “A long-term plan will be to build
a road restaurant near the market shelter where the women will do the catering. It’s possible, but we need assistance in cash or kind.” A plan for this facility has already been drawn up by an architect and a sustainability plan has also been drafted. “We will need about R400 000 to complete this project and appeal to the community to help us start it.” Contact Buchholz on 076 772 1528 or email cathy.buch holz@gmail.com

>> BNI has 195 000 members worldwide PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com BUSINESS Network International (BNI) celebrated its first anniversary of its Eagle Chapter branch at a breakfast. Ansie Nieuwenhuis, KZN BNI Executive director, said time has gone so fast and already a year has passed since its Eagle Chapter was formed. Nieuwenhuis said what is more exiting is that the 10 founder members of BNI Eagle Chapter are still there, unlike in other cases where members and businesses relocate. “We are happy to celebrate this one-year anniversary and hope to celebrate many more years.” Nieuwenhuis welcomed everyone and explained the purpose of BNI. “Our purpose is to assist small and medium enterprises to generate income by refer-
rals. “We have over 195 000 members worldwide and have been going for 31 years.” Nieuwenhuis said globally members meet weekly to share ideas and educate members and clients about how to increase business. “Our philosophy is ‘givers gain’ and by that we mean if I give you business you will get business,” she said. Last year in KZN alone BNI generated R143 million in business, and globally $9.3 billion. At BNI they develop people by giving them a platform on which to build relationships among themselves and become master networkers. “With our positive attitude we uplift people and we learn from one another,” she said. After breakfast and presentations, members enjoyed cake in celebration of their first birthday.

OUTH Africa is yet to have an issue-based election, with a proper evaluation of candidates. The focus of this year’s local government elections thus far has been the race to get onto election lists. Candidate lists had to be submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) this week amid fierce com-
Let’s evaluate candidates petition within political parties for the chance to be councillors. In some cases, internal party rivalries have been marred by violence and killings. This is obviously not just about jobs. It reveals the desperation to ascend into positions of power and influence where resources can be accessed. Municipalities are central to local economic activity and those who have the ability to influence the awarding of contracts and decide how money is spent wield enormous power in their communities. ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe described the process of compiling the list of candidates as similar to handling “a nuclear time bomb”. He was addressing the media at the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg, while disgruntled ANC members
staged a protest outside. “What is a new thing though is that people are going to war to be a councillor, where you bus people to Luthuli House, where they must be visible for you to be a councillor,” Mantashe said. One major grievance in the ANC list compilation process was the 50% quota for women candidates and a rule that 60% of its present councillors be retained for continuity. But cross-cutting this and every other issue plaguing the ANC are factional battles and the quest for power and wealth. People on the losing end of factional battles or those who have been left off the lists have threatened to contest the election as independent candidates. Now that the lists have been submitted to the IEC, a new phase of the election campaign kicks off with contestation between political parties
and against those who are standing as independent candidates. There are fears that levels of violence might escalate, with tensions brewing over the past few weeks and clashes between party supporters in some areas. Sadly, in the heat of the election battle and contestation for positions, candidates do not seem to be evaluated on the basis of how they intend to solve local problems. South Africa has among the highest rates of protest action in the world, with communities demonstrating over the delivery of basic services, houses and better living conditions. People have been angered by how their mayors and councillors have neglected their responsibilities and allowed services to degenerate. But it is not easy to hold these people accountable, particularly if party dynamics and factional interests ensure that they keep their jobs. A report released by auditor-general Kimi Makwetu this week shows that only 54 out of the country’s 278 municipalities received clean audits. While the 2014-15 local government audit shows much better results than five years ago, with clean audits rising from just 13 then, it is still unaccepta-
ble that the majority of South Africa’s municipalities are not properly managed. Only three of the country’s eight metros — Ekurhuleni, eThekwini and Cape Town — have a clean bill of health, with Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City being the worst performers. Irregular expenditure across the country’s municipalities more than doubled in the past five years to R14,75 billion. Unauthorised expenditure increased threefold to R15,32 billion. Makwetu said the main reason for unauthorised spending was that budgets were not overseen properly, leading to overspending. The local government elections on August 3 present South Africans with the opportunity to elect higher calibre leaders in their councils. Candidates should be interrogated on how they intend to improve the management and efficiency of municipalities rather than on the basis of party affiliation and which factions they belong to. Now is the time to elect councillors who can make a difference in municipalities, ensuring higher quality services and better financial management, and who are accountable to those who elect them.

will be a mix of noticeable improvements in the presentation of a number of beach sites as well as a snag list for authorities to attend to as soon as possible. Generally most identified snags such as paint jobs, tiling and plumbing requirements are doable and not massively cost consumptive so we anticipate continued upgrades going forward. What did impress the evaluation team was the number of sites where personnel were in fact placing a lot of pride in the neatness of public space precincts. There were, of course, pockets for concern, but on the whole the amenities were better presented than we expected. In addition we also noted many sites that through SAPS and community involvement had security presence permanently on site - this can
do wonders for our Sunny and Safe ambitions. As stated before, there is some way to go before our destination can claim high quality presentation levels for all beach sites, but unless we conduct such tours, we will be remiss in our efforts to ensure that everybody has a good level of comfort when at leisure on our beaches. There is no doubt that our beaches are as a collective scenically the best in KZN and beach walking over the two-day period was extremely therapeutic even though we were busying ourselves writing on clip boards and being sleuths. May everybody have a fantastic mid-year break. No wonder the inland folk from over the escarpment migrate here when their winter holidays are due. It is lovely here at this time of year.

Why is Afrikaans still so prominent? I WAS two years old during the Soweto uprising and grew up not knowing the significance of the sacrifices made by the youth of that time. As a child I did not understand apartheid, neither did I question why I had to learn Afrikaans. Now that I have my own children and we live in a democratic South Africa, I ask why this big representation of apartheid is still a part of my life and that of my children. I have not had the need to use Afrikaans in all my life, English being the language most people communicate in. By all means, teach Afrikaans to children whose parents prefer it, but do not impose it on others. Certainly do not make it compulsory, nor a factor that af-
fects passing the year. We call ourselves a rainbow nation, but our languages are limited to two. English is the most commonly spoken language and can be used almost everywhere to communicate. Afrikaans and any other official language should be an optional extra. Furthermore, calling Afrikaans a “first additional home language” is a complete misnomer, because it is not the home language in most cases. We find ourselves still learning a language “forced” on us 40 years later, and so the deaths on Soweto Day go unrewarded. We remember the dead but we haven’t won their fight. A. KHAN

Daar is natuurlik ander littekens waarmee mens nie graag spog nie. Party littekens is erger as ander.

Hy is in derdaad gebreek.

Hoe redeneer jy met so iemand? Of die aarde is plat.

Die ouditeur wil weet waarom Oupa se geldsake so benard is. “Ek dobbel so bietjie,” erken Oupa. “Maar dan is dit geen wonder nie,” sê die prokureur, “g’n wonder jou geld het skielik soveel minder geword nie.” “Aikona, ek wen altyd my geld terug, dis waarom ek my prokureur saamgebring het om jou te oortuig. Ek sal dit bewys,” antwoord Oupa. “Wat van ‘n demonstrasie?” Baie huiwerig stem die ouditeur in. “Ek wed jou vyf-duisend rand ek kan my eie oog byt.” Hy stem in.

Banters, dieters rejoice — guiltfree wine available at last “LET’S say you’re a Banter dying to enjoy a good steak with a decent red wine, but you’re feeling a little concerned about all those hidden sugars in your tipple — we’ve got the answer. Or imagine you’re on the Weigh-Less programme, or any other diet for that matter. “Even if you’re just that little bit sugar or carb-conscious, one often feels a twinge when you have that second glass of wine with dinner. We’re mak-
ing it that little bit easier to enjoy your favourite drink — red wine — guiltfree. This is a genuine, no gimmicks healthier-option wine for kilojouleand alcohol-conscious wine drinkers. It has about half the kilojoules, half the alcohol and substantially lower total sugar content than your average red wine. “And what makes it even more significant,” enthuses Trevor Strydom, managing director of Audacia, the
Stellenbosch-based red wine boutique winery, “is that we believe this to be the first lower kilojoules wine in the world with a nutritional table on the back label. “That means you know exactly what you’re putting into your body, which is also particularly helpful for people with sugar diabetes, as it empowers them with knowledge.” He is referring to their latest offering, Audacia Lower Kilojoules, a red

blend made using indigenous rooibos and honeybush-toasted wood chips, that clocks in at 7,5% alcohol and 193 kilojoules, with 0,2 grams of total sugar per 100 ml — substantially less than conventional wines. “It’s easy drinking, so for those who want to keep their alcohol intake low, or those who are wary of so-called empty calories and an increased sugar intake, this wine is the obvious choice. I’ll put all my money on it,” Strydom says. “In fact, I have.” He continues: “Alcohol is what gives wine body, while sugar can enhance its flavour. Historically, the problem has been that wines with lower alcohol content tend to lose their body and structure. “But this unique wine maintains both components thanks to our use of indigenous wood. The addition of toasted honeybush and rooibos wood chips during the winemaking process imparts naturally occurring chemical compounds that provide this wine with structure and pleasing, subtle fla-
vours. “As a rule, when winemakers produce lower alcohol red wines with around seven or eight alcohol, wines tend to fall apart because alcohol forms the backbone of any wine. To compensate for the problem, winemakers tend to add grape concentrate to improve structure and flavour,” explains Strydom. “This results in red wines that, while they may be lower in alcohol, still contain a lot of residual sugar (from added grape concentrate). “In contrast, indigenous honeybush-toasted wood chips contain natural compounds which enhance the sweetness and flavour of wine without the need to add the sugar-dense grape concentrate,” he clarifies. “We want to encourage bar and restaurants with a health-conscious clientele to stock the product, giving their patrons the option to enjoy a decent glass of red or two without worrying too much about over-indulging.” — Supplied.

Universities are not excluded - the local campus is now an eyesore. We are the only ones on this planet who have to work to sustain ourselves, yet we show extreme disregard for Mother Earth. Msunduzi is sadly cluttered with litter and the biggest culprits are the many businesses who dump litter on pavements. The inner residential areas decay must be attributed to residents who carelessly dump their waste on vacant land, on street corners and along school fences. Commitment, awareness and effort, coupled with sensitivity for nature, will assist in keeping our surroundings clean. Community education must be on-going and the law sternly applied. HE ANC launched its manifesto at the Harry Gwala Stadium on 12 June. Post the launch, Alexandra Park was strewn with litter with no respect shown for our environment. This seems to be a pattern with political parties and government-organised gatherings. Three years ago the ANC left the Truro Hall complex littered after a social ills programme and not long thereafter, the Department of Health employees did likewise to the Protea Grounds after a wellness day programme. We are showing scant regard and setting poor examples to the youth. Earth sustains us and is struggling to give us water and food due to challenges from

crease taxi fare every year was taken by the council in 2012. This was to avoid issues similar to those that arose in previous years. “In previous years we had issues with regards to when fares should be increased. “Associations felt that, whenever fuel increases, taxi fares should also increase and that was becoming a problem for commuters as the fees never decreased when fuel prices decreased,” said Mzelemu. He said council took the decision that a fare increase will only take place every 1 July. “Throughout South Africa taxi fares increase depending on the amount the association decides on, also depending on the distance of the taxi route,” said Mzelemu.

HE South Coast may be the resting place for retirees, but when it comes to dogs and their doings, we are on the ball. Members of Hibiscus Kennel Club are passionate about their sport and spend many hours training and traveling to distant venues. We congratulate Sue McCay and her GSD Gita who did well at shows in Durban obtaining 99% in both. The cherry on the top was being chosen to represent KwaZuluNatal in the interprovincial competition on 3 July. Tracy Norton and her Boxers traveled to Gauteng for obedience trials where Badger achieved fourth place in the Novice division with 81% and Georgie as a Beginner achieved 85%. Georgie also participated in Agility and took third place in Non-Contact. Tracy is a very proud mom. Renate Haussman attended the same show participating in Carting and Flyball and is ecstatic with the title of KUSA National Mini Carting Champion for her little Daschund Mein Schatz. Raven was awarded Flyball Champion. Gaby Frey and Ninette Smith attended the KZN Champs in Pietermaritzburg where the poodles ruled. Our veteran Scooby, already in her 12th year took second place in NonContact as well as Dog Jumping and her baby sister was right behind her in third place. Swish and Ninette took the first place in both Non-Contact and Dog Jumping. We had 46 handlers predominantly from the South Coast with some handlers running fourth dogs Thanks to the municipality the field is in tip-top condition and the weather was perfect. Thank you to our local Dog Jumping judge Ninette Smith and to Dalene Tayler for the lovely courses and to our sponsors Montego and Bravecto. We often forget that nothing happens without someone working behind the scenes and in this case the committee of HKC must be applauded for a job well done. Each member contributes in some way to make a successful event. Jeremy Brown, the chairman of Margate Kennel Club handed out the prizes and did an excellent job making every competitor feel special.

Benefits of installing rain gutters H
OUSE gutters are long, narrow tubes used to re-route rain that falls on the roof of a house or building through a downpipe and out to the drainage system and away from the home. This keeps the ground around the house from becoming waterlogged and the rainwater from potentially being absorbed into the foundations, where it will cause severe damage to the structure, as well as surrounding structures. Without gutters, rain will run down the roofline, creating a waterfall effect. If the roof has a wide overhang, this may not be much of a problem for the foundation. While gutter maintenance can be a nuisance, fixing damaged gutters is not difficult or expensive. Holes can be patched and plugged using roofing cement, while sagging or loose gutters can be hammered back into place. SA Damp shares the benefits of installing gutters. Why installing gutters is important Our weather is changing. The highveld no longer experiences summer flash storms and dry, arid days of old. Summer days and nights are characterised by a much higher percent-

age of humidity and can even be classified as subtropical. Why is this important? Humidity opens the pores of plastered walls, allowing water to enter and flow through them, causing rapid plaster rot. Prolonged soaking due to rain also
ensures that much more water seeps into the plaster pores, leeching away cement. Avoid structural damage and a decrease in property value Building standards and the way we maintain houses has changed over
time. Thirty years ago, even the cheapest houses installed gutters. Many of these old houses will still be standing in 100 years as a result of this and other good building practices.
Homeowners who do not install gutters on their roofs cannot expect their walls to last a lifetime. If not attended to, repair costs will soar, and if still unattended, will seriously effect the structural integrity and the value of your property. Consider the following: • When it comes to installing and maintaining gutters, homeowners need to be proactive. • Take care to install quality membranes to prevent the parapet tops from cracking and degrading. • Use high-quality latex primer on all the walls for extensive protection and an extended life. • Point sprinklers away from walls so they remain dry. • Consider installing a perimeter drain around your house. The components of a gutter system It takes a well-designed roof to drain all of the storm water into the gutters or roof drains. The gutter or roof drain needs to be designed to capture all the roof drainage so that it directs the water into the downspouts. Downspouts are pipes that carry the water from the gutters to the drain system. - Property24.
LED solutions are the future of light, and they are more economical LIGHT emitting diodes (LEDs) have put light bulbs back on the front page. Now, the lighting industry is being forced to wrestle with a large number

When comparing lighting fixtures on the basis of delivered light, LED fixtures often perform as well, and in some cases better than conventional fixtures. • Myth: LEDs give poor light quality Light quality is measured by the colour rendering index, or CRI. Most spaces require a minimum CRI of 70 to 90 and many white LED lighting fixtures available today achieve CRIs of 80 or better. • Myth: 3W LEDs are brighter than IW Fortunately, this is a hang-over from a recent past, where the only way to increase brightness was to increase the watts. However, some waste heat is produced within the LED itself, but a bit of
clever engineering in high-quality fixtures dissipates this heat into the surrounding air. • Myth: LEDs don’t produce over 160 lumens While significantly more economical than traditional fixtures, some high-efficient white-light LED lighting fixtures achieve efficacy of over 40 lumens per watt. - Supplied.

VERYTHING about the Lexus LC 500 has been as dramatic and captivating as its looks right from conception. Having started life as an LF-LC concept back in 2012, although there were no plans to produce it at the time, Lexus had to change its collective mind after the overwhelmingly positive response. Britain will have its first sight of the new Lexus LC coupe this weekend when it goes on show and takes to the track at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The story behind the car’s development is as intriguing as its award-winning design, revealed by the men who led its development from a show-stopping concept car into an equally radical road-going machine. The production version is hardly less dramatic than the concept, with supercar-like proportions and a V8 engine driving the rear wheels through a ten-speed automatic gearbox. An arched body line and oversized wheels give the LC 500 an athletic look, while the massive Lexus spindle grille dominates the front. Beyond its styling and impactful performance, the new LC 500 serves as a symbol of the achievement that can result from heightened collaboration between design and engineering groups and their commitment to help overcome each other’s hurdles. Chief Engineer Koji Sato and
Chief Designer Tadao Mori headed up their teams in an unprecedented collaboration, embracing new technologies and advanced materials alongside established Lexus manufacturing traditions such as the hand-and-eye skills of the Takumi craftspeople. So, when President of Toyota Motor CorpAkio Toyoda challenged these development groups to produce this special car, it meant surpassing many manufacturing, design, material, and dynamic obstacles that could typically compromise a vehicle’s targets or design vision. The engineering and design teams have given their personal insights into the project in a series of interview features that cover the key development challenges, including how they succeeded in translating the stand-out styling of the original LF-LC concept car into the packaging of a viable production model. The fruits of their labour will be given a high-profile platform this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the V8-powered LC 500 will be making runs on the famous hill climb course and will be on public display as the centrepiece of the Lexus stand. The Lexus LC 500 will be launched in South Africa in the first quarter of 2017. Further details will be released closer to the date.

For young families >> Brian Bassett tests the Suzuki Ciaz
T
HE Suzuki Ciaz has been around since April 2015 and it has allowed Suzuki to compete in the ultra-competitive compact sedan segment for the first time. It also allows the company to extend its reach to buyers who want a larger car than the Swift Dezire, while still enjoying the fuel economy and safety of the Suzuki brand. Suzuki has now launched the top-of-the-range Ciaz, which essentially has everything and manages, even in this era of the weak rand, to retain a very competitive pricing. My thanks to Gary Stokes of Suzuki Fury Pietermaritzburg for allowing me time with the car. Styling Externally the Ciaz is the same sleek shape, with slim A-pillars and a large windscreen that looks equally at home on either formal or family occasions. Colour-coded side mirrors and windows are electrically operated and the external design is finished off by attractive, 16-inch takkies.
Interior The strong point of the Ciaz interior is how easy it is to access by passengers of all ages. The doors also hinge open in stages so that you don’t have to worry about damage to the car next to yours in a shopping centre parking lot. The cabin of the Ciaz is spacious, elegant and roomier than the exterior would suggest. The interior finish is a combination of soft leather and high-quality plastics that project an almost premium image and every time you approach the car you will have the warm glow that comes with knowing you have received good value for money. The dash favours the driver and the instrument binnacle contains deep analogue dials which can be viewed without losing sight of the road. The instrument binnacle is framed by a leather-covered, multi-function, fullyadjustable steering wheel with controls for the six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth telephony and speed control. The central stack houses the CD/
radio/aux systems and an effective airconditioner. The driver’s seat comfortably fits all sizes and generally seating both back and front offer a high comfort level for five adults. Sitting in the rear seat behind my own long-legged seating position provided the level of comfort suited to a longer journey. The boot offers a huge 495 litres of space and is so big it is a bit of a stretch to retrieve items in its recesses. Safety and security The Ciaz offers a range of security measures of which the key items include the usual ABS with EBD, driver and passenger airbags, Brake Assist and a collapsible steering wheel, child-proof locks, as well as keyless entry and an immobiliser. There are seatbelts for all and side-impact beams to protect against passenger damage. Power and handling The Ciaz SLX Auto has a normallyaspirated 1,4-litre, four-cylinder, 70 kW/130 Nm engine and a smooth, four-speed auto box. With a reasona-

“Laws are flouted and lives are risked on the road not the side of the road, and that is where our law enfor cers need to be on the road. The areas, which are known to the police and public where laws are consistently be ing ignored, should receive focused attention,” said the Association. The Association said apart from changing the way they operate, law enforcers also needed to ensure they applied the law consistently, and fairly, to all road users. It noted that there have been calls from government for harsher penalties for certain traffic offences, but it said the current laws are more than sufficient and just need to be enforced. It said it is unfortunate that some road violations are treated differently on a casebycase basis instead of applying the same penalties and punishments even handedly no matter who is involved. In April, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced that investigations into several major crashes would be undertaken by her department and the RTMC, in part

FOR some time now the Automobile Association (AA) has been calling for more effective traffic policing, as an urgent step to addressing road carnage on our roads nationwide. According to the Road Traffic Management Corpora tion (RTMC), approximately 13 000 people died on the country’s roads last year. While it is agreed that the attitude of motorists gen erally needs significant improvement, a radical rethink is also needed among traffic law enforcement authori ties to address serious crashes, and road deaths, on the country’s roads. “Road safety in South Africa remains a major problem. “Too many motorists simply ignore the rules believ ing that they are either above the law, will never be caught, or that they will not be harmed through their own reckless driving. If the death toll is to decrease, this attitude needs to change,” the AA said. But, it noted, while this is important, nothing will change without more effective traffic policing. “In our opinion there is too much emphasis placed on ‘static’ policing where officers check for speeding cars or for expired licence discs while stationed at the side of the road. While a zero tolerance approach is good, this alone simply doesn’t work as risky motorists adjust their behaviour until they are past these points,” said the AA. It said that the enforcement of laws against danger ous driving actions need to be prioritised by law enforce ment authorities. This included monitoring drivers who speed, but also those who overtake dangerously, drive in emergency lanes to avoid traffic congestion, use electronic devices while driving, or who swerve in and out of traffic without regard for other drivers.

The AA awaits the outcomes of these investigations with keen interest, and how these will translate into specific policing interventions to reduce road deaths in South Africa. “There needs to be a strong message across South Africa to all road users: the police will act if you drive

labour as an entitled stakeholder and not just a cost to be minimised. Labour has to view business as the provider of opportunity and not as the greedy capitalist enemy. Government has to ruthlessly eradicate corruption and stop procedurally excluding efficient service providers because they are not owned by a particular race group. Without such paradigm shifts you can talk all you want and legislate what you want, but nothing will change. All we need to do is look beyond our borders to see what the result will be. The writing is on the wall, but hopefully sanity will prevail and our leaders will understand that a radical change in thinking is required.

ON a national level, government, organised labour and business continue to seek ways to fast-track economic growth, which is seen as the only way to address socioeconomic problems associated with high unemployment and income inequality. If they are to succeed, something has to give. Government has to address corruption and structural exclusion of previously advantaged commercial expertise, labour has to stop seeing business as greedy exploiters of workers and business has to stop seeing labour as just another input cost to be minimised. In this country, where it is right now, these paradigms have to change. Business has to view

Business news >> Economic woes of Mozambique and Zimbabwe should be a lesson BUSINESS REPORTER
S
OUTH Africa has avoided credit rating downgrades for now. Major ratings agencies will again assess the country’s credit rating in December. International credit ratings impact the cost of government debt and also inflows and outflows of investment capital. Fortunately, the current stability in the United States interest rates strengthens the outlook for emerging markets to continue to attract investment but this could change if the U.S. Federal Reserve takes a more aggressive view on rising inflation. Higher interest rates in the U.S. offers international investors a better return at lower risk which can lead to withdrawal of capital from emerging markets like email: colin@onewaybusinessservices.co.za South Africa. Cycling community enjoys new track >> Bridge to be named after Burry at San Lameer CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com
T
HE launch of the MTB trail at San Lameer saw cyclists and their families not only enjoy the new track, but have fun day out. The event entailed four cycling challenges, free massages by therapists from Camelot Spa, a children’s fun zone, food vendors and more. Andrew Ramos, founder of the Tiago’s franchise and Bundubashers MTB Club Chairman, launched a new mountain bike series before prize giving. This series is made up of five races which will
take place during the course of the year. The first one takes place in July at the Port Edward Holiday Resort and Fever is the media partner. Mandie Stander gave permission to San Lameer to name one of the bridges after her son Burry, a world renowned cyclist, who was killed in 2013 after taxi turned over a solid line and collided with him while cycling in Shelly Beach. The bridge will be called the “Burry Stander Bridge”. San Lameer pledged R10 000 towards the Burry Stander Foundation.
On the podium for the 7km MTB male: San Lameer Estate director, Pine Pienaar, Richmond Soboye (second), Lindani Shusha (first), Simon Gumede (third) and Giant South Coast owner, Wayne Tarr.
