We, as workers, took the time to attend this parliament only to find that not one MEC is present.” Mkhize then asked KZN Legislature speaker Lydia Johnson to allow unions to caucus and discuss a way forward. After the caucus Mkhize said they are dissatisfied with the situation and asked the speaker to explain why the MECs were not at the meeting. “We are not being taken seriously as decision-makers are not here. Who is going to respond to our questions, and who will answer our questions.” Mkhize said at the last meeting a date for the next parliament was given to stakeholders and the fact that MECs are not here shows lack of prioritising from their side. Speaking on behalf of Natu, a delegate said that issues between ANC and Natu would result in MECs not attending the parliament. At that point the MEC for the Department of Transport, Community Safety Willies Mchunu arrived and told angry workers that some MECs were still on the way, but others would not be attending because of commitments. “MEC of Social Development Weziwe Thusi is still on her way and so is the MEC of Health, Dlomo. The MEC of education Nkonyeni and Mabuyakhulu did say they won’t make it because they are in other provincial executive committee meetings and are under pressure.” Sadtu’s Nomarussia Caluza said they understand that the MECs are under pressure, however, as workers they also had commitments, which they had to cancel. “We were expecting the MECs to be here as we expected them to participate.” The speaker then asked that the parliament continue because Thusi and Ravi Pillay had arrived, which was accepted.

INDON Consulting hosted a workshop with private sector maritime stakeholders on Tuesday, 24 May in Port Shepstone. The workshop the initiative of the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) to develop the Ugu maritime industry in order to encourage economic growth and job creation. The EDTEA through the Trade and Sector Directorate has developed the KZN Integrated Maritime Strategy, a high-level road map for the development of the provincial maritime industry. Given that the Ugu District is located along one of KZN’s most popular and pristine coastlines, EDTEA identified the need to optimise the Ugu maritime industry by developing an Ugu Maritime Strategy. Chief consultant of the project Don Govender said the purpose of the workshop was to obtain feedback from the private business sector on the challenges and oppor-

Govender said feedback from the meeting would be taken into account during the development of the strategy. The workshop was attended by representatives and organisations, including the South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Samsa, South Coast Tourism, NSRI and Legend Kayaks, to name a few.

Looking at the different aspects - social, technology, environmental and economical issues, a number of questions were raised. Tourism Ceo Justin Mackrory said that the beaches on the South Coast should be upgraded and IDPs should be adjusted. Rapists behind bars for 20 years each TWO men, Khonzelani Mkhize (25) and Muzikhona Ngcobo (35) were sentenced to 20 years’ in the Scottburgh Regional Court last week for the rape of a woman in the Mtwalume area. In May 2014, the complainant and her friend visited a tavern in the area. At some point during that evening, the complaint’s friend left without informing her. The complainant waited and eventually also left the tavern. As she walked to the road, with the hope of securing a lift, she was approached by the two accused. They told her it was too late for her to be out on the road and offered her a place to stay at the one accused’s home overnight. They mentioned he had a sister who she could share a room with. The complainant agreed and they walk

ed together. On reaching the shack, they threatened her with a knife and forced her to undress. Accused one raped the complainant in the presence of accused two, who then raped her as well. The men raped the woman for a second time after which accused two left. The com plainant waited for accused one to fall asleep and she ran away. She saw a community member on the road and reported the incident to her. The police were called and when they ar rived they found accused one still asleep. Stakeholders agreed that the South Coast has no new technical inventions, which is also an area that needs to be looked into. Water craft stakeholders said they depend on clients from abroad because many beach lifesavers do not have proper equipment, which shows a lack of municipality support. The stakeholders asked why the public sector fails to communicate with the private sector, which leads to the number of issues the maritime industry is faced with on the lower South Coast. Other questions asked were why the public sector always comes up with policies, but none are ever implemented. Another area of concern was that of security and safety which affects tourism on the lower South Coast. Assaulted man dies CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24. com SECURITY officers from Lazer 911 came across the body of a man in Oslo Beach on Sunday evening while patrolling in the area. “A woman and motor-cross bikers flagged down the officers and said they had come across the man’s body,” said Basil Lanka of Lazer. At the time the bikers did not know that the man was dead.

“Our officers approached the body and found that the man was semi-naked and badly assaulted,” he added. Police and paramedics were then called to the scene. The man, who is yet to be identified, was declared dead on scene. “The man was found with multiple injuries and he was certified dead by paramedics. “A murder case was opened. The man must still be identified,” said police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid.

Solidaiteit Helpende Hande launched a project called Help Hanna last year to assist school going girls with sanitary items and toiletries. According to a study done by Solidarity Helping Hand, menstruation is a burden for more than 10% of girls every month due to a shortage of sanitary products. More than 10% of the girls in less affluent schools do not have enough san-

itary products to see them through the month. A further seven percent indicated that they miss school because they do not have sufficient products. Locally, Hoërskool Suid-Natal and Suid-Natal Primêre Skool benefit from the project by receiving toiletries only. The schools secured their own donors for sanitary items. “Each parcel is worth about R50 and contains sanitary pads and two other products, which includes body wash, toothpaste or antiperspirant,

which is carefully packed for them,” said Mariëtte van Heerden, KZN Regional co-ordinator. “Helping Hand created a character, Hanna, to represent every girl who experiences this problem. She is a typical school girl, but she has financial difficulties and therefore cannot afford to buy sanitary products,” she added. Sheppie hospital encourages breast feeding MANY people don’t understand why Port Shepstone Hospital does not allow mothers to bottle feed or use dummies or artificial teats for their infants on in the hospital premises. “This is in line with the babyfriendly initiative that was developed and implemented in South Africa in the nineties to promote and support optimal infant and young child feeding which mainly promotes breastfeeding,” said hospital’s spokesperson, Phumza Morai. The aim of the breastfeeding policy is to ensure that every child is given the best start in life. In 2011, Port Shepstone Hospital was awarded a certificate for having maintained baby-friendly practices. The status entails that hospital staff, pregnant women and boarder mothers must be given sufficient information on acceptable infant feeding practices that are allowed in the hospital. These include breastfeeding and cup and spoon feeding only. “For Port Shepstone Hospital to maintain the Baby Friendly Status, it is imperative for people to understand and adhere to our infant feeding policy, which strictly prohibits the use of artificial teats, feeding bottles or pacifiers to infants when on hospital premises,” she said. These efforts ensure optimal nutrition in the first two years of life, which is critical to address child health and development. “We promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and continued breastfeeding after six months with appropriate, safe, complimentary feeding in order to reduce infant mortality,” said Morai. - Supplied.

HE fifth annual Paddle Out for Sharks conservation platform, connecting humans with the oceans, will be held in conjunction with the international Silence of the Sharks underwater protest this year. Two events are set to take place on the South Coast - one at Scottburgh (Aliwal Shoal) and Shelly Beach (Protea Banks) on Saturday, 4 June. Endorsed by Ugu South Coast Tourism, the Silence of the Sharks and Paddle Out for Sharks initiatives will also celebrate World Oceans Day on 8 June, centred around the theme of ‘healthy oceans, healthy planet’. “The ocean serves a number of vital purposes, regulating temperature, providing life-giving oxygen and a home to an incredible array of wildlife,” explained Justin Mackrory, CEO Ugu South Coast Tourism. “To ensure the health of all future generations, we need to ensure that our oceans are protected.” Mackrory said residents on the South Coast are made aware, on a daily basis, of the beauty of the ocean and the need for its preservation. “We have some of the best big animal diving in the world,” he explained. “Aliwal Shoal has been named one of the world’s top 10 dive sites and Protea Banks attracts thousands of international divers every year. These initiatives coincide with the proposed expansion of the Marine Protected Areas at these two dive sites on the KZN

South Coast and play an important part in keeping awareness about our oceans alive and encouraging people to become proactive in the protection of sharks and marine life.” Paddle Out for Sharks, which was first held at Aliwal Shoal in 2011, is supported by the surfing community, conservationists, anglers, divers, paddle skiers, scientists and all environmentally-concerned individuals. Following the surfing tradition of ‘paddling out’ in memory of a fallen surfer, the event echoes that spiritual element, highlighting the plight of sharks.

“The Paddle Out for Sharks is proud to co-operate on our fifth annual paddle out in 2016, with Silence of the Sharks at the south coast venues. As a grassroots movement that aims to raise awareness of the plight of sharks, we see a synergy with Silence of the Sharks, who are also trying to provide a ‘voice for sharks’,” said Amanda Barratt, Paddle Out for Sharks organiser. The same sentiment flows through the Silence of the Sharks protest, which started with a Red Sea dive in December 2015 where about 100 divers went to a depth of 20 metres for half an hour in protest of the mass disap-

pearance of sharks. The dive will be emulated at various locations across the globe, with South Africa’s single event taking place on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, set to be the biggest underwater demonstration ever held in South Africa. The initiative will end on 23 October 2016 with a dive in Cyprus. According to David Pilosof, underwater photographer and diver who is leading the Silence of the Sharks initiative since 1972, the number of blacktip reef sharks has dwindled by 93 percent worldwide, the number of tiger sharks has decreased by 97% and bull sharks by 99%. Every year, 70 million sharks or more are hunted globally, particularly in the Far East, although the European Union and United States have not made shark fishing illegal. Sharks have roamed the oceans for 400 million years and are understood to be linked to the health of all our oceans. Despite this, the decimation of sharks for shark fin soup, with some sharks finned while alive and then thrown back into the ocean to drown, continues. Many sport fishermen also target large sharks, effectively removing slow reproducing animals, vital to all conservation, merely for trophies. Internationally renowned marine videographer, Mark Addison, who comes from the South Coast and will be participating in the event, said: “The greatest threat to sharks on our coast is ourselves, in all of our destructive incantations. It is truly sad. I am

The agency is aimed at disadvantaged, aspiring models. Ngaleka recently graduated from Boston College where she studied to be a paralegal. Growing up, Ngaleka participated in “home-grown” beauty pageants. “As a child I participated in pageants organised by a group of neighbours just as entertainment for little boys and girls, not big ones like the Mr and Miss Gamalakhe.” She said her sister, Thule, was her inspiration. “What also inspired me to become a model is firstly to gain confidence to embrace the imperfections I saw in my body and I also saw it as a hobby, which would be a reminder that I have to take good care of my body,” said Amahle.

The Silence of the Sharks protest forms part of South Coast Tourism’s sardine season campaign, which includes a number of family-focused events. The annual Sardine Run along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, dubbed “the greatest shoal on Earth” is one of the most significant natural migration phenomena globally. The day’s events will start at 8am with the Paddle Out for Sharks participants gathering at back line off Scottburgh Beach where flowers will be laid. Thereafter, the Silence of the Sharks participants will be invited to jump off the boats and form a group in the water holding banners. Following a countdown, the divers will descend one to two metres with the banners. Scuba divers will then descend with the banners to a 10 metre depth. For ocean lovers and shark advocates wanting to get involved in this impactful campaign but not wanting to get wet, there will be land-based activities at both Scottburgh and Shelly Beach-St Mike’s (Protea Banks). The Harley Owners Group (Hogs) Durban Chapter will also be joining in the demonstration by riding from Durban to Scottburgh, gathering at the tidal pool on Scottburgh Main Beach which will provide the perfect viewing point to watch proceedings. Shark Scientist Jessica Escobar will be giving a talk to the crowds that gather, explaining the event and the plight of sharks. Everyone is welcome to attend and encouraged to bring deckchairs, binoculars and flowers. - Supplied.

She said winning the crown gave her confidence and made her realise she could pursue a modelling career. “Being crowned Miss Gamalakhe made me realise I do have talent and it put pressure on me to prove that I am not just a beauty, I also have the brains to develop the youth in my community,” she said. The Keshivan Medical Trust committee members decided that laughter was what Port Shepstone needed and brought to town, the Dingalings show, Got Admitted. All funds were donated to Keshivan Govender, a three-year-old boy, who was born with Spastic cerebral palsy. These funds will enable his parents, Jason and Charmaine, to obtain stem cell treatment for him at the Shenzhein Beike Biotechnology Co Ltd.

TIMES are a changing for sure. Doing what we do, we see changes in the dogs and cats when the seasons change and the weather gets colder or when it rains, but these changes always get back to normal. The changes we see now relate to the situation in the country and it’s not good. It spells ill for not only the human race but mostly for the animals. Food is scarce and traps are being set where we have never had a problem with them. In the last two weeks we have lost two dogs, dying in the trap and rescued two very injured dogs in the nick of time. One we call Bruno has lost a leg and the bliksem (excuse the name, but that is him to a T) nearly lost his crown jewels and was cut all the way around his body which will leave scars for the rest of his life. These injuries are horrendous and must be the most frightening and painful thing any animal can experience. I don’t even want to think about all the small animals that die in the crude hand make killing machines. Vet costs have soured and I’m sure we are going to have this again. Most of the 155 dogs we feed every day and roughly about 30 cats are more hungry than they have ever been. We daily have fights among the dogs who try and get to the food the minute we put the containers down. It’s heartbreaking to see and what worries us is the fact that we cannot feed them till they are satisfied as we just do not have the funds to buy more food. We are truly blessed in that the local Pet shop in Scott street, Scottburgh gives us a 30 day account, but we can only buy as much as we can pay for. We currently use 25kg of dog food every day seven days a week. This is an earnest appeal to you our supportive public for food. Any dry dog food will be most welcome and Catmore for the cats. If you want to deliver food, please put our name on the bag and drop it off at the security guard at the gate of Scottburgh High School. Ook nie vir hulle nie.” Die konsensus was ook hoewel die Zuptas ‘n groot bedreiging is, is Julius en sy rooi brigade vyand nommer een. Indien hulle hulle sin kry, gaan niks meer saakmaak nie. Ook nie die ANC se bekommerde groep nie. Die storie van die week kom van Len Celliers van Durban. Hy vertel van ‘n groep manne wat enkele jare gelede per boot uit is om te gaan visvang. Op die boot het die hulle lekker bier gedrink, en met die hulp van die see van hulle het siek geword.

Piet het oor die kant van die boot gehang, en toe hy weer ‘n kat skiet, val sy boonste stel valstande in die see. Sy maats lag hulleself moeg, en besluit om hom ‘n poets te bak. Een van hulle, die kêrel wat seker die hardste en lekkerste gelag het, haal sy eie valstande uit, sny agter Piet se rug die maag van ‘n haaitjie oop wat vroeër gevang is, en sit die valstande daarin. “Piet, kyk hier, hier’s jou tande. Die haai het hulle ingesluk.” Piet kan dit nie glo nie. Hy gryp die tande, vee hulle half skoon, en druk hulle in sy mond. “Nee man, dis nie my tande hierdie nie.” Met ‘n groot swaai van sy arm gooi Piet die tande 20 meter van die boot af in die see.

nie in ‘n baie goeie toestand was nie, het ‘n tweede sarsie storms die seile heeltemal verflenter. Sy hoofmas en roer is ook ernstig beskadig, en die skip het begin water lek. In hierdie feitlik hulpelose toestand het die São João landwaarts gedryf. Op 8 Junie het die bemanning die kus gewaar, en is ‘n groep per roeiboot gestuur om ‘n geskikte landingsplek te soek. Hulle het net een geskikte plek geidentifiseer, want die res van die kus was uiters rotsagtig. Die skipsanker is in sewe vadem water uitgegooi. Twee bote het gesink tydens die pogings om die land te bereik, en op die derde dag het die skip landwaarts gedryf en is dit op die rotse deur die

Tragedie van die ‘Titanic van sy tyd’

ERLEDE week was ek deel van ‘n groep mense wat deur die plaaslike toeristemense op ‘n bootrit op die Umtamvunarivier by die Pont-vakansie-oord van Port Edward getrakteer is. Tydens die rit het die plaaslike stadsraadslid, Dave Watson, ‘n praatjie gehou oor die geskiedenis van die São João, seker die grootste skip van sy tyd, wat by Port Edward vergaan het. Watson het hom verdiep in hierdie geskiedkundige gebeurtenis, en het so onderhoudend oor sekere aspekte gesels, dat ek besluit het om meer inligting te bekom. Die verskillende bronne stem nie altyd saam oor presies wat gebeur het, maar die volgende is ‘n breë opsomming. Die Portugese galei, die São João, het op 8 Junie, 1552 by Port Edward gestrand. Dit was die vroegste storie oor skeepsrampe aan die kus van Suider-Afrika. Twee jaar later, in 1554, het nog ‘n groot Portugese skip, die São Bento, verder suid gestrand, ook met groot lewensverlies, en meer

het omdat sy nie sonder klere gesien wou word nie. Haar twee jong seuns het saam met haar daar gesterf, en haar man het blykbaar die bosse ingeloop na sy dood. Slegs 12 van die oorspronklike groep mense op die skip, het uiteindelik daarin geslaag om Portugal te bereik. ‘n Interessante aspek wat Watson genoem het, was dat die twee seuns, weens die adellike afkoms van hul ouers, troonopvolgers in Portugal was. Hul dood sou beslis die daaropvolgende geskiedenis van die Portugese koningshuis betekenisvol verander het. Daar was baie lank onsekerheid oor presies waar die São João vergaan het. Aanvanklik is vermoed dat dit heelwat verder suid was, daarom is Port St. Johns na hom vernoem. Maar in 1980 het navorser Tim Maggs van die Natalse Museum in Pietermaritzburg op grond van porselein, kanonne en ander artefakte wat op die toneel gevind is, finaal vasgestel dat die skip by Port Edward vergaan het. Die São João se stranding word jaarliks met ‘n plaaslike Portugese fees herdenk wanneer kultuurbande met Suid-Afrika versterk word. Mense wat nog inligting oor die interessante verhaal van die São João verlang, is welkom om met Watson op 082 374 4114 in aanraking te kom.

Dis asof die regering met oop oë in die rigting van ‘n reuse afgrond loop en hoop dis ‘n optiese illusie. ‘n Bekende Pretoriase politikus wat hier ingeloer het, het ons meegedeel hy het baie gesaghebbend gehoor daar is ‘n soortgelyke bekommernis by ‘n groot groep binne die regerende party.

Af en toe het ‘n wurm die drang gevoel om met ‘n riet na bo te klim. Dan verdwyn hy en kom nooit weer terug nie. Al die wurms het gewonder hoe dit daar bo lyk. Hulle beraadslaag en vertel toe dat die volgende een wat na bo klim sal terugkom en vertel. Kort daarna is ‘n wurm weer uit na bo. Bo gekom kry hy ‘n lekker kolletjie waar hy kan opkrul en slaap. Terwyl hy lê en slaap val sy dop af en verander hy in die mooiste naaldekoker. Hy sprei sy vlerke en onthou sy belofte om terug te keer na die ander wurms. Hy besef toe hulle sal hom nie herken nie. Maar een ding weet hy:hulle sal elkeen na bo klim en hierdie heerlikheid belewe. God het jou nie vergeet nie. Hou moed. Jy is dalk nou op die grond neergegooi, maar jy is nie vernietig nie. God is nog nie klaar met jou nie. Die beste lê nog voor. Kom ons deel eerlik ons laagtepunte, maar ook hoe God ons in Christus daardeur gelei het. So bemoedig ons mekaar. Christus is immers deur Getsemane en Golgota na die regterhand van Sy Vader gelei.

With a goal of preventing illness and promoting physical fitness, practitioners perform various routines comprising a number of different dance-like exercises. Formal aerobics classes are divided into different levels of intensity and complexity. Both the term and the specific exercise method were developed by Dr Kenneth Cooper, an exercise physiologist, and Colonel Pauline Potts, a physical therapist, both of the United States Air Force. Cooper, an avowed exercise enthusiast, was personally and professionally puzzled about why some people with excellent muscular strength

were still prone to poor performance at tasks such as long-distance running, swimming, and bicycling. He began measuring systematic human performance using a bicycle ergometer, and began measuring sustained performance in terms of a person’s ability to use oxygen. In 1968, he published Aerobics, which included exercise programmes using running, walking, swimming and bicycling. The book came at a time when increasing weakness and inactivity in the population was causing a perceived need for increased exercise. AS they say, prevention is better than cure. To prevent unnecessary breakdown and repair costs, it is essential to do a routine maintenance check on your vehicle. • Carrying an emergency kit is essential. Emergency equipment includes, an up-to-date map, cellphone, spare tyre and emergency tools such as a torch, screwdrivers, pliers and an adjustable spanner. Red alert: carry a reflective warning triangle in case of breakdown. • Check the fluids in your car. The oil, coolant, brake fluid and windscreen wash levels are the obvious ones. Red alert: the levels for the clutch fluid and power steering fluid is often overlooked, and can lead to accidents. • Check the tyre air pressure. The correct pressure is normally printed in the owner’s manual or a sticker on the body where the driver’s door shuts. The maximum pressure is marked on the side of the tyre and should not be exceeded. Red alert: don't forget to check your spare tyre pressure and make sure you have a jack and the correct tools to change a tyre, some tyres require a special spanner for lock nuts,

which is not always mentioned when you upgrade your tyres. • Check your tyre wear by using a coin or a tread gauge. Ensure you have at least 1/16th" or 1.6mm tread left. Red alert: tyres heat up on long trips, which can cause blowouts on worn out tires. • If you have not done a recent service and an oil change, doing so before a long trip is recommended. Red alert: when changing your car's oil always replace the oil filter at the same time. • Check your car's air filter. Clean air to your engine improves the vehicle’s performance and efficiency. Red alert: remember to change the cabin (pollen) filter. These are often ignored in services and if worn adversely affect the quality of air in the cabin. • To ensure high visibility, make sure the windows are clean. Red alert: defective windscreen wipers should be replaced. • All lights and signals should be in working order. This elite group of parts sales people were assessed on different criteria and then awarded accordingly. Dhevan Moodley and Ben Nair were placed first and second respectively,nationwide in the professional level category. “This is definitely a feather in our cap as competition was tough, but these two dedicated em-

ployees made it to the top in the country,” said parts sales manager, Gopal Govender who has been with the dealership for 40 years. In order to join the Toyota Customer Service Society, both salesmen had to complete all training offered to them during the year and qualify as parts salesmen. They then had to excel in customer service and achieve sales targets for the year. A project was then given to them in which they had to find innovative ways to grow parts sales and improve certain areas within the department. “This is certainly a proud achievement for the parts sales department,” added Govender.

HE South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted an agricultural indaba at Uvongo Town Hall on Tuesday, attended by farmers and local business owners. Also in attendance was Department of Agriculture MEC Cyril Xaba, who spoke about agriculture and farming from a business perspective. Xaba thanked the South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the district municipality for convening the meeting. “In many parts in South Africa and around the world, organised agriculture operates independently with their own agri-business units. There needs to be more interaction, more

overlapping of interests with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry,” he said. Xaba said at local level the Ugu District sees agriculture as one of the catalysts when it come to growing the economy, which is good. He also spoke about agrarian transformation. “Basically agrarian transformation needs to succeed in the farming industry, you need business skills,” said Xaba. He encouraged farmers to be innovative and look for ways to grow their business and advised attendees to join local business chambers, which are platforms for business growth and for farmers to network at. Xaba said at a national level they are aware that revitalisation of agriculture and agro-processing value

chain is number one on government’s nine-point plan. “This ties in with the role of business chambers, which promotes growth and investment, builds new enterprises and forges stronger links between business communities,” he said. Xaba said if agriculture is a catalyst for economic growth it is expected to play a key role in job creation as mandated by the national development plan, it has to feature prominently on the agenda of the Chamber of Business and Industry. The MEC said the department’s website is regularly updated. “Our website is accessible to everyone and most of the information farmers need is on there. The next SupaDrift series takes place at the end of this month.

HE Dezzi South Coast Raceway in Oslo Beach is a favourite on the SupaDrift series championship circuit. It has been formally announced that 27 and 28 May mark the first of two event this world-class track will host this year. The SupaDrift Series, under the auspices of Motorsport South Africa

(MSA), is South Africa’s official national championship. Drifting is the fastest growing motorsports code globally and South Africa is following similar trends. Drifting involves the intentional over-steering of cars, which causes a loss of traction in the rear wheels. Drivers must maintain control from entry to exit of a corner with the intention of gaining style points from

judges and spectators. Points are determined by style, drift angle, tyre smoke and noise maintained around a fixed course. The up-down Dezzi South Coast Raceway roller-coaster circuit layout involves challenging corners and drift techniques and skills will be pushed to the limit. As the third race of the season rolls closer, drivers will be looking to fine-tune

their smoke-churning sideways drifting and get their supped-up cars raceready in order to cement their positions in the series. Current series and championship leader, Shane Gutzeit, will be attuning his sideways antics to a homeground advantage, but threat is eminent on the drift horizon and local drivers, Paolo Gouveia, and out-oftown hopefuls are making their way to Port Shepstone to dethrone and unsettle the standings. “We are extremely privileged to

partner with the Dezzi Raceway and look forward to being part of the successes and increased popularity of this track,” said Ugu South Coast Tourism’s CEO, Justin Mackrory. Special mention must be made of Ninette Smith and her little poodle Swish who were amongst the handlers who represented KwaZulu-Natal at the recent South African Championship in the Cape. They were up against very tough competition and Swish is still very young but they secured a spot in the team that will represent South Africa in Spain in September. This will be the first time Ninette will represent the country and we are proud to have another member of Hibiscus Kennel Club do so. Well done Ninette and Swish we know you will do well after your spectacular hat trick this weekend of three Qualifications Congratulations to all the May babies at the club, both humans and dogs. Striders line up for Comrades Marathon

Sixtyfive South coast Striders will be lining up at the start of the 2016 Comrades Marathon in Pietermaritz burg on Sun day.

OUTH Coast Striders have 18 novices - first-time runners - this year who will participate in the Comrades Marathon. A total of 65 runners will hit the road on Sunday. This is a high percentage as the popularity of the sport seems to be on the increase, said Kim Rice, of the club. One special achiever in the form of Zwelisha “Tiger” Gono will be attempting his 40th run.

This will be the first time that a black runner will accomplish this milestone. “Gono has always been an unbelievable athlete and in his prime ran a staggering time of 6:13 putting him in 20th position overall. We also have a few top guys and girls running this

year that are hoping for a silver medal, that is a finish time of under seven and a half hours,” said Rice. She said it is interesting that more than half the Comrades field finish within the last half our of the 12-hour cut-off time and these are often known as the backbone of the comrades.

“Lots of fun and chirping can be heard from them along the way but as they reach the last 10 or so kilometres the laughter often turns to tears as the pain and agony sets in. It sounds like I’ve painted a terrible picture, but in fact it’s quite the opposite as they will feel the most incredible sense of

achievement and honour in claiming that all important finishers medal,” she said. The chilly start will be outside the town hall in Pietermarizburg at 5.30am, due to a cold front that’s on the weather forecast, and will finish in Durban at 5.30pm. - Supplied.
