MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. AIN came down and hard at the beginning of the week, resulting in reports of flooding and destruction of property by strong winds in the district.

A farm in Southbroom, Outlook Farms, recorded a total of 293.1mm rainfall since last Friday 22 July night to Monday, 25 July. A further 300mm fell between Monday and Wednesday. Emergency services were kept busy as they responded to various

road accidents. A family of three was swept off a bridge, and had to swim several kilometres before getting to a place of safety in the heavy rain on Tuesday. KZN EMS spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, said no fatalities had been reported.

“Two cars were washed off bridges on the South Coast,” he said. He said motorists must still exercise caution even though the rain has eased off. The Hibiscus Coast Municipality fire department responded to incidents from Monday to Tuesday, spokesperson Simon April confirmed. There were seven houses in Wards 20, 22 and 23 that were damaged because of flooding. “The municipality has given emergency relief items to those affected. Teams are closely monitoring bridges although there have been no reports of any bridges washing away.”

Police wage war on drug dealers THE SAPS have warned South Coast drug dealers to watch out because they are coming after them. Last Thursday two drug dealers were arrested by the Port Shepstone Drug Task team under the command of Detective Warrant Officer Herman Pienaar. The men, aged 22 and 26, were arrested during an operation in Erasmus Road and the Port Shepstone Taxi Rank respectively. Fifty heroin capsules and 30 mandrax tablets with a street value of R8 000 were seized. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the two were charged for dealing in drugs and will appear in the Ramsgate Court soon. Ugu cluster commander, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele said one of her priorities in the cluster it to fight drugs. “Communities are urged to report any drug activities to the police,” said Wiid. - Supplied.

Car rolls on P200, driver injured THE driver of a light motor vehicle was injured last Thursday when the car rolled on the P200, Izotsha. KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Belinda Catchpole said paramedics from

Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS). On 6 January, 2015, the little girl, who lives with her grandmother and relatives in Nyangwini Ward, Hibberdene returned from her father’s house at about 6pm and ran up to her grandmother, crying. She complained that she had been assaulted by her father. A few hours earlier, the father had taken his daughter [victim] and her aunt, also a little girl, to his rondavel

House robber sentenced MONDLI Ngidi (24) of Mfazazana in Hibberdene appeared in the Scott burgh Regional Court where he was convicted of house robbery and sen tenced on Wednesday, 20 July, to 15 years’ imprisonment. A second accused was acquitted. A 32yearold victim in Marriane Road in Hibberdene was asleep on 23 June, 2015 at 3.40am, when she heard strange sounds.

She awoke to find a stranger in her room. A second suspect emerged from the ceiling and both men helped themselves to, inter alia, handbags, a TV, laptop, two cell phones, jewellery, cosmetics and a hairdryer. The father’s neighbour alerted the grandmother that she had heard the victim crying in her father’s house saying she should be examined. The victim then reported that she had been raped by her father twice the previous year. The matter was reported to the police who investigated the allega-

tions. The biological father was arrested and charged with two counts of rape and assault common and he was brought before court. Major-General Agnes Nxamagele, the Ugu (Port Shepstone) Cluster Commander, commended the FCS detectives for the thorough investigation of the case and for ensuring that the rapist dad was put behind bars. “It is heartbreaking that a father could betray his daughter’s trust and ravage her little body to satisfy his lust. The little girl need not live in fear anymore as her father will be behind bars for many a year to come,” said Nxamagele.

Drug dealer sentenced to six years THE SAPS welcomed the sentence meted out to a convicted drug dealer last week and hope it will deter others from dealing in drugs. Nkosinathi Emmanuel Myende (34) appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 22 July where he was convicted of dealing in drugs and sentenced to six years imprisonment, half of which was suspended for five years. Warrant Officer Deena Govender of the Scottburgh SAPS followed up on information received and pounced on Myende at the Scottburgh taxi rank in October last year. Govender searched him and

recovered a plastic packet with 24 straws of heroin. Myende was arrested and detained and the straws of heroin seized as exhibits. The Scottburgh SAPS Station Commander, Lieutenant- Colonel Praga Naicker, commended Warrant Officer Deena Govender for the arrest and subsequent conviction and sentencing of the drug dealer. “Our members work tirelessly to rid our communities of drugs. Numerous drug-related arrests were effected recently and I urge them to intensify their efforts to keep our streets free of drugs,” said Naicker. - Supplied.

HERE was plenty of water on the lower South Coast. but for some areas, there was not a drop to drink. Ugu District Municipality said it’s water and sanitation systems in certain parts of the district were disrupted due to numerous pipe breaks, water works flooding and high volumes of storm water into sewer systems. Also due to the electricity breaks, Shelly Beach, Melville, Woodgrange and Uvongo have been restricted to ensure sustainable supply while Marburg, Umtentweni, Southport, Gamalakhe and Oslo Beach experienced complete shutdown to avoid total

collapse of the supply system. “Technicians are working around the clock to ensure efficient and effective restoration of services. Customers are also alerted that it might take longer than expected to attend to reported leaks and breaks due to a number of access roads being washed away therefore prohibiting reach of faults,” said Ugu spokesperson France Zama. “The entire district has been assessed to determine the extent of damage and needs for support and relief,” he added. Customers are urged to visit the Ugu Municipality Talk page on Facebook or contact the call centre on 08000 Water (92837) or 039 68 5830/36 or SMS

44751 for recent developments. On the positive side, the heavy rainfall has been of benefit with the dam levels in the Hibiscus Coast rising. “The Bhobhoyi dam is well over 32%,” said Zama. In the areas south-west of the district, supply sources at KwaMbotho, KwaNyuswa and Harding Dams in Umuziwabantu area have progressed. In areas under Umdoni, the EJ Smith and Umzinto dams have been filled. “Although there is a slight recorded change in the improvement of supply sources, we, as the municipality, reiterate the importance of preserving water as we are still engulfed by the effects of the drought,” said Zama.

HE body found in Gamalakhe, Qinabout area in the Ohlangeni stream on Friday has been identified as that of Godfrey Moketi Ngake, known as “Stone”, who was a car guard at Shelly Centre. A community member reported seeing Ngake’s body floating in the stream. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said at about 1pm on Friday the Port Shepstone SAPS Search and Rescue members were called to assist with the recovery of the body. The identity of the body was unknown when the inquest docket was opened by Gamalakhe police. On Friday a Fever reporter overheard people in a taxi, talking about the body as being that

of Ngake, and said Ngake was not from Gamalakhe, he was just renting a place with a relative Jafta Taso. On Tuesday Fever reporter spoke to Shelly Centre car guards who described Ngake as a humble person. On Monday Ngake’s family came from the Free State to identify the body. “We hear he owed some woman R200 and was threatened by the woman, and all of a sudden he went missing,” said his uncle who identified himself as Shadrack. Ngake’s death is under police investigation. His family is taking his body back to the Free State for burial.

HE elderly and children from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, who have never flown before, got the chance to fly on Thursday. Ward councillors from 29 wards within the Hibiscus Coast Municipality were asked to bring a senior citizen and a child from their wards to the launch of CemAir’s new aircraft at Margate Airport. Three 20-minute trips were scheduled for the first-time flyers and some got to fly in the new 8Q300 50seater plane. At the launch HCM mayor Nomusa Mqwebu said the new plane will be a legacy to councillors who are nearing the end of their term. “CemAir will always have our support,” said Mqwebu. Municipal manager Max Mbili said he hoped youngsters from the black community will pursue careers in aviation. “By taking these young children on the plane, I hope they will take a liking to it and strive to become pilots one day. The aviation industry is currently white-dominated and it would be good to see black people become pilots,” he added.

THE Wild Coast Sun's efforts to become selfsustain ing are paying off. Its expansive vegetable garden, es tablished in October 2014, now supplies a range of veg etables and herbs to the resort’s kitchens. Seven tons of produce was harvested in the last finan cial year, saving the Wild Coast Sun over R90 000. The garden spans a 60x57 metres, with eight lines of 5m width. Vegetables grown include cabbages, broccoli, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, beet root and green peppers, while the herb garden has rosemary, sage, sweet basil and parsley. In the past year, the garden produced almost 600kgs of green pepper, which would have cost the resort R14 690 to buy in, while spinach is proving to be anoth er excellent grower, with 717kgs harvested, saving the

CemAir CEO, Miles van der Molen, said the new aircraft was ideal for the Margate to Johannesburg route as it could withstand all weather conditions and would get passagers to Johannesburg quicker because it is a faster plane. “CemAir has had wonderful support from the community and I can say that this venture has been the highlight of my career,” he said.

Van der Molen added that although his competitors offered cheaper flights to Durban, flying from Margate was more convenient as one did not have to bear the additional cost of driving to Durban and paying for parking. “Also, we have not increased the cost of our flights from the time we started the airline three years ago,” he said.

resort R9 177. Surplus vegetables and herbs are donated to the local schools which include Serhasheni Primary, Ebe nezer Junior Secondary and Bright Future Preprimary. In total the three schools cater for 1 500 pupils every day. A new member in the cast of colourful plants in the garden is an orange tree, grown from a single seed from an orange from Bambanani. Recently, the vegetable garden was expanded to include a rice field. The garden is tended to by men from the local community, led by Alex Nzimakwe. According to the Wild Coast Sun’s environmental manager, Sonja Stroud, the vegetable garden is an en vironmental project aimed at reducing carbon emis sions, fuel consumption, and waste to landfill. It is a natural extension to the resort’s successful natural compost project which produces enough natural com post to dress the sprawling lawns at the Wild Coast Sun, as well as feed the vegetable and herb gardens. “We are thrilled with the progress we have made towards optimising our resource efficiencies and en trenching sustainable practices. Our vegetable garden has an abundant supply of fresh vegetables and herbs which our culinary teams use in the kitchens. “While contributing to environmental sustainability and reducing our own costs, the vegetable project at the Wild Coast Sun also uplifts the community. We are really proud of what we have achieved in the past yearanda half,” said Stroud. Supplied.

Municipality thanked for good work

A

NOTHER very busy month has gone by at Hibiscus Kennel Club, culminating in the Lions Show where members put their dogs through their paces in both agility and obedience with the help of our super carting dogs. They say in the movie world that dogs and children are very difficult to work with as they need to be given new challenges constantly to keep them focused. We challenged our dogs and they were amazing, considering the strange environment, the excessive noise and the throngs of people. When they faltered it was because we had not given clear instructions. Agility produced a few surprises when Georgie the boxer decided to go over the chute and not through it but she thoroughly enjoyed her run. Bondi the Border Collie was on top

CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com A SOUTHPORT woman told the Fever that one often hears about how the Hibiscus Coast Municipality is not doing its job, so she decided to let locals know how she was assisted by Team One from the Hibiscus Coast Municipality recently. Elmarie Mouton said there was a tree obstructing the boundary wall around her home for some time. “I called Peppy Govender at the municipality, who sent a team to have the tree removed,” she said. “Mr Juma came to my premises with his team and they were very efficient,” she added. She said the tree was growing underneath the boundary wall and damaging it. The tree was also growing into

form and designed her own course but to see the enjoyment this dog gets out of agility makes it all worthwhile. The dogs enjoyed the Flyball and Jodie the Border Collie was disappointed to be called away from the demonstration - “why only two turns?” The display stand inside the tent received many enquiries as well as people stopping for a chat. After all we all have the cleverest dogs. We thank the Lions of Port Shepstone for giving us this opportunity to showcase our work and for the understanding of our concerns for our dogs. We need shade and a secure place away from the crowds and they understood. The following results are from the show held on 10 July:

Safety at sea FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION

Ugu intensifies war against water loss UGU District Municipality has made major strides in ensuring the ultimate reduction of water loss and non-revenue water. Such strides were advanced through the launching of the Leak Detection Testing Rig and Pressure Management Control Room at 2 Lind Road in Marburg on Friday. This building and the facility cost R500 000, funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation. The machinery will assist with the detection of underground leaks not visible to the naked eye, therefore also eliminating prolonged water disruptions. During the launch the mayor, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede applauded the

Our municipality has received accolades for being the best performing municipality in terms of this requirement with an excellent score of 95.38% according to the latest “no drop” report published by the department. Gumede highlighted that this achievement is confirmation that processes and systems are in place to detect the status of water loss in the district. A gap was identified that plumbers needed training on the operation and maintenance of water supply systems as the conventional training normally focuses on the installation and repair skills. A municipal team went to Sao Paulo in Brazil and came back with this

concept. This is the first of its kind in Africa and only the second in the world. Another one is in Brazil. A total of 10 internal staff have since been trained and are in the process of training others. The plan is to obtain accreditation for the training and trainers. Ugu also has plans to develop memorandums of understanding with other water services authorities in terms of providing training. This initiative is in line with Salga’s Municipal Benchmarking Initiative, supported by the Water Research Commission which says, “for municipalities, by municipalities, to benefit municipalities”. The Leak Detection Testing Rig and Pressure Management Control Room will equip the municipality with resources to swiftly detect and respond to leaks. Ugu District Municipality will continue to promote working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for our communities.

UGU South Coast Tourism recently made a financial contribution to Port Edward’s Na tional Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station. Some may ask “what such a contribu tion has to do with tourism?” The answer is pretty simple really. If our residents and visitors are as seasafe as possible, the repu tation of our coastline is enhanced and our tourism gets the thumbs up. The excellent work done by the NSRI on the South Coast has over the years saved many lives and afforded ocean users a re spectful confidence that somebody is on hand if the unexpected arises. The NSRI is made up of local volunteers who dedicate their time and often put their own lives on the line for others. In 2015 we presented our local NSRI sta tions with an award recognising what the organisation does to provide the public and our tourism industry with a much valued service. If our beaches and seas were left mi nus a rescue service beyond that also pro vided by our many lifeguards from shore, there could be a drastic lack of user comfort in using the sea for leisure and commercial purposes. The added comfort exists that in the event of a medical emergency from a sea incident there are a number of quality medi cal facilities down here that can provide the right care at the right time. The sea can be a pleasure provider and a deceitful danger so without the services

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM of organisations like the NSRI we would be hard pressed to sustain the good seaside safety reputation that does prevail. I am aware that the NSRI does have on going need for financial support to ensure that their rescue equipment and technolo gy are capable in dealing with any eventual ity so I would urge our public and companies to support their work and fund raising en deavours. Years ago I watched live BBC coverage of sea rescue boats trying to save stricken sailors from a sinking vessel off the treach erous Cornish coast and what struck me was the unrelenting bravery of the rescuers to reach the very distressed seamen. The NSRI is represented by similarly committed people wanting nothing more than safe times at the coast and at sea. We trust that the past holiday period was just that and that we can similarly look forward to a situationfree summer season in a few months time.

Dog on the Couch

HI Susan, I have a Spaniel mixed-breed who is terrified of swimming, but I do want the assurance of knowing he can swim. I am concerned because many friends have said that I should take him to the sea and force him in, but he is terrified and bolts away when I attempt this. Please can you help? I do not want him to drown accidentally. Lee Your friends, Lee, are suggesting a “therapy” known as flooding. Unfortunately, the results of quick fixes like this can have serious psychological consequences, because the animal is being forced into a situation perceived as dangerous. The fight, flight or freeze

survival mechanisms kick into gear and might produce a fear-induced aggressive response. The result could be a negative learnt response that may be triggered by any item or situation the dog perceives as dangerous. Many people have been psychologically scarred by the crude old method of throwing them into swimming pools as very young children. It’s a dangerous hit-and-miss method to be avoided. Phobias dealt with in this way with human subjects have the advantage of informed consent. For example, if a spider-phobic person agrees to be treated by being put into a room with spiders this is an informed choice. If it weren’t, it would rightly be considered a wicked, abusive act. The essential point I am emphasising here is that the dog is not able to be informed and to understand that this is a treatment and that no physical harm will ensue. It is far kinder to gradually expose the dog to his fear while providing a positive reward. Although this is certainly time-consuming, the animal gradually learns that its fear is largely unfounded. If this is patiently and properly done it is safer and most likely to produce healthy and enduring results. Consult an experienced trainer or behaviourist if you are uncertain how to proceed. I cannot stress enough the importance of avoiding problem behaviours where possible, rather than trying to correct them once they have become ingrained. I hope this helps.

Turks display maturity THE thousands of ordinary citizens who bravely opposed the coup and supported the democratically elected government in Turkey need to be commended for showing political maturity. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, due to his moral transformation and economic development of Turkey and his support for the Syrian refugees, has become a source of inspiration for many Muslims across the globe. Agreed, Erdogen has his faults like any human being and more so being a politician. Like other politicians, his decisions are not above criticism or disapproval, but there was no need for a military coup. Erdogan blames Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish cleric who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, U.S., for orchestrating the attempted coup. Erdogan is demanding that the U.S. government extradite Gulen. It will be interesting to see if the U.S. accedes to this request. So far, the U.S. is demanding evidence that meets the legal criteria for extradition.

Councillors must honour their promises CANDIDATES for the upcoming municipal elections are promising residents heaven and Earth, but they must take into account the impact on community development as a result of their false promises.

R. Radley Marina Beach

This scenario reminds me of Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush. After 9/11, Bush made a similar request to the Taliban. The Taliban refused to extradite Bin Laden without evidence resulting in the U.S. invasion and destruction of Afghanistan. American double standards and its forkedtongued proclamations reduce its moral high ground to be the police of the world. To quote Noam Chomsky: “If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged.” Mohamed Saeed

Their promises must be realistic and must take into account the economic reality. If they do win the wards they are targeting, will they be able to deliver? Many of us are sometimes taken for a ride and are convinced

that our unemployment rate and lack of service delivery will be addressed simply because they will be in office. To all those who are contesting the elections, know that breaking your promise will make things difficult. To those who are elected councillors, I say to you: honour your promises made to the people and carry on with your door-to-door campaigns. Do not return only for the next election campaign. I wish you the best for the local government elections but remember all those who fought hard for this freedom, including our international icon Dr Nelson R. Mandela. We salute all those who will always fight oppression and racism, and those who are there to ensure that accountability triumphs. Bonginkosi Ndlovu

Thank you, estate agent ALLOW us to say a big thank to Jo Anne Wentzel of Alpha Estates for showing us what excellent and professional service is. We bought a flat in Margate in November last year and immediately put it back on the market. A month ago we realised that we need a new agent to assist us and luckily, Jo Anne was referred to us. That same after-

noon our flat was listed and Jo Anne assured us that Thursday that she would sell our flat, and needless to say, she sold it within two days. She stayed in contact via email and called us until the money was paid in our account last week. Once again, a big thank you. Besters Southport

Munisipale verkiesing handige inligting >> Daar is drie soorte verkiesingselsels …

Wanneer daar byvoorbeeld 10 wyke in ‘n munisipaliteit beskikbaar is, is vyf wyksetels en vyf proporsionele verteenwoordiging-setels (PV of PR in Engels). Dieselfde stelsel geld in vanjaar se verkiesing. Waarvoor stem ‘n mens aanstaande Woensdag?

So word Naomi uiteindelik self versorg. ‘n Mens moet nie te gou aanvaar dat daar nie ‘n oplossing vir ‘n probleem is nie. Vertrou die Here om aan jou die wysheid te gee om uit die doodloopstraat in jou lewe te tree. Naomi se doodloopstraat sou uiteindelik lei tot die geboorte van Christus, die nageslag van Rut, die Redder van die wêreld. God omskep doodloopstrate in poorte van hoop.

NOTHER year of existence and excellence has been added to Creston College’s history book as they celebrated their 21st birthday. Parents and the media were part of the celebrations and in opening gave them a glimpse of a scene from the play Three Musketeers, which will be presented by college phase cast members from 13 August.

Executive headmaster, Noel Coetzee welcomed pupils and guests and thanked them for being part of the celebrations. Coetzee thanked the forefathers of the school who implemented the school 21 years ago. The junior phase choir entertained with a song I am the Earth. Head boy Reece Harrison, read Psalms 147 to introduce the first guest speaker - Pastor Chad Broome. “Today is a day of praise to the col-

lege founders, and one should not forget that it was God who gave them the idea to start the school and He also deserves praise,” said Broome. The senior phase choir then sang Something Inside So Strong. calling up on stage

Guest speaker, Pastor Trevor Downham of Norwegian Settlers Church in Izotsha, spoke about the changes at the school since it first opened. “If we look back we are joyful about how the school has grown in the 21 years,” said Downham.

He said the founders made a lot of sacrifices in order for it to be where it is today. “The founders spent a lot of time and money to ensure the existence of the school so that all of you here today can be here,” he said.

ORN in KwaZulu-Natal, Creston College executive headmaster, Noel Coetzee, said its good to be back in his home province and on the coast once more. Coetzee was announced headmaster two months ago by the SGB. Coetzee has been involved in various phases of education before taking up this position. He was previously Business School Netherlands manager, involved at tertiary level by marketing the school, optimising training opportunities and liaising with stakeholders in the business and academic power. Coetzee said after working for Business School Netherlands he returned to the world of industrial management. “I was the general manager of Mooi River’s Tai Yeun Textile factory during its initial establishment. The programme required training programmes for the diverse cultural groups that were employed in different departments. “I ensured that employees completed all the courses and passed skills test

and I was recognised for this at the annual prize giving,” said Coetzee, which he said was one of his highlight achievements, among others. He was also was the headmaster of Treverton Preparatory School and College in Mooi River and a Director of Education for Pembury Lifestyle group and opened two schools - Willowview Academy in Kempton Park,

they have two children. “I am a family man with two children, who are graduates,” he said. His hobbies and interests include bird watching, boating, caravaning, cycling and a healthy outdoor lifestyle. “I am a very keen cyclist and participated and completed nine Argus Cycle Tours,” he said. His short- and long-term goals for the school start continuing to fly the flag of the wonderful reputation the school has. “The school has a good reputation in the education sector and my long-term goal is to build on to that track of it academic record,” said Coetzee. He said his shortterm goals include a number of things which will be coming up soon. The school is revamping its marketing material, working towards a building facility and new classrooms are already under construction and will be available for use in September. “We are also planning to have a gym at the school,” he said. He said being a manager is not different from being a teacher in terms of marketing and dealing with pupils, parents and staff.

Owner Warren McCumskey said he always found computers fascinating and from the age of eight he built his first computer and has been working on them for 20 years. McCumskey said McKey Mobile Computers differs from all other computer businesses, as they do not require the customer to part with their

rus and malware removal and prevention, cellphones, tablets and computers, everything is done in front of the customer,” said McCumskey. He said it is never a problem to de-

laptops or computer just because of a small network problem or other issues, which can be sorted in less than a day. “You don’t have to pack up your whole system and go hunting for a shop.” He said at times customers are not happy with leaving their computers with a stranger with easy access to their confidential documents, photos, Facebook profile and anything personal for extended periods at a time. “At McKey Mobile we take the ‘hassle’ out of minor, but irritating IT problems. Our candidates for 2016 understand that you are the reason the IFP exists. They are here to serve you. The IFP understand that this is a great responsibility. When you give your mandate to IFP candidates, a binding contract is formed. We, as the Party, become fully responsible for holding your elected leaders to account. We make sure that they do their job, because they are doing it under the IFP name.

Shareen Ahmed Ebrahim Ward 18

That is the way it should be. In a partnership of trust, everyone should know what is expected and what will be delivered. That is particularly important as we approach an election. For this reason, the IFP’s manifesto for 2016 contains solid reasons to trust us. You will find in this manifesto a basic statement of who we are and why we have been your trusted partner in good governance for 41 years.

HE establishment of another business incubator in Port Shepstone is encouraging. The ICT sector is viewed by many as key to the development of small and emerging businesses. employment multiplier. The biggest challenge we face on the Hibiscus Coast is youth unemployment in both urban and rural areas. What we need is a strategy to not only address youth unemployment but, perhaps more importantly, to address the current growing levels of frustration among the youth. Step one is to engage with the youth in an organised and constructive manner. Initiatives are already under way to establish a non political forum for this purpose. This is a mighty task but it is one that has to be undertaken urgently. The work of this forum will be to map out a future of inclusiveness and opportunity for the youth. Step two is to engage with the business and agricultural sectors to promote initiatives geared to boosting local manufacturing and agricultural activity. In terms of employment potential, these two sectors offer the best short term employment multipliers. In this endeavour, the retail sector is vital because shelves and showrooms must be encouraged to carry locally made goods. In general, all business sectors need to be involved and encouraged to enter into joint ventures with emerging entrepreneurs trading in rural areas, to work together with informal traders and to play a leading role in stabilising the socio economic environment.

Local ON 14 July the new business incubator in Port Shepstone was launched by small business development minister Lindiwe Zulu, who opened the SmartXchange outlet amid much enthusiasm regarding the potential impact on small business development. SmartXchange is an incubator for small businesses operating in the information and communication technology sector. The incubator initiative is supported by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and is part of the Seda Technology Programme. Both Seda and the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) report to the Department of Small Business Development, which facilitates access to

funding from Sefa. National Last Thursday, 21 July, the monetary policy committee (MPC) of the SA Reserve Bank decided to hold the repo rate at 7%. Market expectations were that rates would not be changed. Slowing inflation and reduced economic growth forecasts were cited as the main contributors to the decision to hold rates in the short-term. On the labour front, momentum is growing for the introduction of a national minimum wage later this year. Amid warnings from organised business that the introduction of a national minimum wage will lead to job losses among low income earners, new research indicates that the majority of sectors would see positive

net effects. Southern Africa Trade and Industry Minister, Rob Davies, plans to meet his Zimbabwean counterpart to discuss Zimbabwe’s unilateral ban on South African imports. Zimbabwe placed a ban on South African imports last month. According to Zimbabwean authorities the ban was instituted to protect local industries. In spite of major technical problems at its China-built Morupule B power station, Botswana is aiming to become a net exporter of power by the end of 2018. Further power generation initiatives in Botswana include a coal-bed methane project as well as solar and thermal power concentrations.

ENOWNED karate champion, Sensei Morgan Moss, held a kumite seminar in Margate last week. Young and old came to learn new skills in kumite and selfdefence under the World karate Federation on Tuesday and Wednesday. “Throughout the sessions I

focused on principle development through the use of various skill set development exercises. Sometimes the principle was introduced through an element of play. This area should not be taken for granted because it plays a significant rule in athlete development,” said Moss. He said the ultimate goal of the

camp was to work towards the ADC of kumite - A - attack, D - defence and C - counter). “Each movement can be applied using these principles and the training of these ADC skill sets often resembles a competition fight scenario,” he said. Moss is a three-time WKF world champion. - Supplied.

On Saturday all the matches scheduled for the day took place, but the Sunday matches had to be postponed because of the weather. Club secretary Annette Parrow said although light showers fell on Saturday all matches were completed. Parrow said with the rain on Sun-

At the challenge Debrah Thomas, Nataschka Mowat and Riana Niehaus.

HE second race in the series of mountain bike challenges took place on Sunday at the Ingeli Forest Resort in Harding. As the cold front hit, there were fears of snow, heavy rain and winds, however a good turnout of cyclists arrived. Current South Coast MTB Series log leader Leeroy Emslie finished in first position making him a firm favourite to win the ultimate R5 000 in prize money, while long-time cyclist Natashka Mowat won the ladies race in fine fashion. A bicycle raffle was also on the go with many tickets sold to help raise funds for a local school, Westbury Prep. The lucky draw will take place at the annual Ingeli Show in Harding mid-September. A big highlight of the race was the exquisite route through the forest and mountainous valleys of Ingeli. Temperatures went well below zero degrees en-route but this didn’t hamper the spirits of the participants. Development rider and upcoming star Mboneni Ngcobo travelled all the way from Pietermartizburg to enter the race and was rewarded with a second place position in the 40km race. - Supplied.
