MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. In some municipalities a number of buildings, constructed years ago, have become white elephants. At St Faiths Junction, under the Umzumbe Municipality, a multipurpose community centre was built over 10 years ago, and has never been used, and the community is compelled to go to neighbouring areas for service. In Bhobhoyi, just after

Mkholombe, near Hlanganani Preparatory School there are rows of rooms allegedly belonging to the municipality that have been abandoned, but people are occupying them and come and go as they please. Just above the building is another row of green rooms, also allegedly belonging to the former Hibiscus Coast Municipality, now Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. The municipality spokesperson, Simon April, said the building does not belong to the municipality so they cannot account for it - he said it could belong to the NPA. Umzumbe Municipality was contacted about the multi-purpose

Man gets life for child’s murder E

ZINQOLENI man Khulekani Gambushe (28), has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Ezinqoleni Court for the murder of Olwethu Jengu (6) of Nodalane ward. SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said Olwethu was on his

way home from school on 9 June when he was stopped by the accused. Mfeka said Gambushe called the six year old because he knew him. He then poured a liquid substance, which he had in possession, over the child.

“After pouring the liquid on the child, the accused took out matches from his pocket and set the child alight. A witness tried to stop the accused, however, they failed as the accused held a knife and chased the witness away,” said Mfeka.

“Olwethu ran to a woman from a nearby family who came out with a blanket and tried put out the fire. The child was taken to Thembalesizwe and then transferred to Murchison Hospital where he later died. Mfeka said Gambushe was

arrested the same day by Ezinqoleni detectives. “Gambushe appeared at Ezinqoleni Court several times and was sentenced to life last Tuesday,” he said. - Supplied.

Housebreaker sentenced SERIAL housebreaker Freedom Nkosingiphile Shabane (24) of Boboyi was recently sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Port Shepstone Regional Court for a number of housebreakings and robberies he committed in the Port Shepstone area between May

2015 and January 2016. The cases were investigated by Detective Sergeant Morné Jones of Port Shepstone Detective services. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said with the assistance of Captain Raymond

Shusha, information from the public as well as forensic evidence, Shabane was arrested. “Shabane committed at least five house breakings and robberies in the Port Shepstone area. “He stole a range of household items including cellphones, TVs, a

bicycle, laptop and jewellery,” said Wiid. Wiid said in a house robbery during November 2015 in Seaview road Lionsgrove, he tied up an elderly man and locked him in a cupboard. - Supplied.

Instinct leads to drug dealer’s arrest A 22-YEAR-OLD man appeared in Ramsgate Court on Monday morning for possession of drugs. Nonjabulo Nqoko (22), was arrested on Friday after Margate Crime Intelligence and Margate Crime Prevention Unit noticed the accused behaving suspicious-

ly. “The officers were doing normal crime prevention duties when they saw a suspicious looking male,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka. Nqoko fled into a building and the officers followed him and

heard him talk to a woman. “As the police approached the two, the man ran into a room and the woman tried to close the door on the police,” said Mfeka. Police managed to enter the room and found 150 whoonga capsules and eight parcels of

dagga worth R4 580. There were also 14 parcels of brown powder. It’s properties are unknown at this stage. The case was postponed to 30 September for further investigation. - Supplied.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality said election posters are not covered by current by-laws as the political parties are exempt from paying to put them up. “However, they are given a certain time frame to take them down post-elections, thereafter the posters are regarded as illegal signs or posters and they will be treated as such,” he said. “The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will, however, first send a courtesy reminder to the concerned polit-

ical parties before further necessary steps in regards to illegal signs are taken,” he added. eThekwini Municipality did things a bit differently this time around and each ward paid R200 to erect posters and were limited to 800 posters per ward. At the end of August, the eThekwini municipality issued a stiff warning to parties who had not yet removed their posters. They faced a fine of up to R50 per poster.

THE small town of Scottburgh came to a standstill on Wednesday morning after a group of 10 robbers allegedly robbed two bank safes in the Scottburgh Mall. An undisclosed sum of money was stolen from Absa and FNB. According to media reports, the highly skilled group were armeed with R5 and AK47 assault rifles. There was apparently a shoot-out between police and the robbers before they fled the scene. The road leading to the mall was closed for a few hours while police swept the scene for evidence. Official comment from SAPS could not be obtained at the time of going to press despite several attempts. - Supplied.

ARD election candidates, who have not yet removed their posters, have up until 7 October to do so, the Umzumbe Municipality said. The Fever received information from the public in Umzumbe, Shelly Beach and Port Shepstone, that it’s been almost two months since the elections and some posters are still on display.

Municipality communications officer, Trevor Khanyile, said there was no by-law relating to the removal of election posters, however, there is an Act. “This Act states that parties have 21 days after elections to remove their posters. “We have noticed that some have not complied with this rule and we assume they have forgotten. These must be removed by next Friday,” he added. Simon April, spokesperson for

HILE there are pros to cooking with gas, many do not pay attention to the safety regulations that go with it. “Gas is reliable, efficient, versatile and safe if used correctly, and food also tastes much better,” said Peter Lilliecrona, an industrial gas practitioner on the South Coast. Lilliecrona has been in the industry for 35 years and knows basically all there is to know about gas. He is often called out to assess the aftermath of a fire and to establish whether the gas unit may have been the cause. With regard to fitted units, he advises these be installed by a qualified and accredited company. “If the installer cannot produce a safety certificate after the job is done, he is not accredited. “Don’t try to save a few hundreds and opt for a handyman or plumber to do the job - it may cost you or your family their lives,” he said. He also advises that every body who utilises the unit be educated about the rules on how the unit operates and on general gas safety rules. After a unit is fitted, the installer has to explain how to operate it. “But often, the homeowner isn’t the one using the stove or the oven. It’s the domestic worker or somebody else,

Mobile classrooms officially handed over PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com CONSTRUCTION has started at Merlewood Primary School as mobile classrooms have been placed on the sports field and are already occupied by pupils. Last Thursday Park Homes officials handed over 16 mobile classrooms to deputy principal Tyrone Stephens, who said the classrooms started coming in two weeks ago and Grade R and Grade 6 pupils are already using them. As discussed at the last technical meeting held at the school some months ago, building of the first phase was scheduled to start in September. Stephens said moving pupils into the mobile classrooms indicates that there is progress in the first phase. He said it is hoped that the majority of the old prefabricated classrooms will be demolished during the school holidays. Bright Homes Construction gave hope that by the end of the week more rows of bricks for the foundation would be up. Excitement prevailed at the school as the eldest Merlewood resident, Granny Johanna Godden, was

invited to lay the first brick of the new structure. Granny Johanna will be turning 100 on Thursday, 6 October. The school hopes that by the end of 2016 the Grade R classrooms, as well as upgrades to the hall, will be complete.

Tavern to remove gas cylinders after a fire broke. The flames spread quickly because of the thatched roof. “So off I went at 2.30am to remove these gas cylinders. These cylinders had safety valves which I believe was the reason why I didn’t die that night. All I did was ask the firemen to spray water over me and the area so that I don’t catch alight and the cylinders were kept cool.” Lilliecrona said each one of these stoves, whether it is fitted or for leisure, comes with a guidebook. “Read it and familiarise yourself with these guidelines. Go to a gas supplier or expert, get pamphlets and information and educate yourself.” “Gas should be utilised more in South Africa. Factories overseas make gas from compost heaps. “This country has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to renewable energy.”

They opt for what is called a leisure unit, which is portable and can be used anywhere. These units must have an oval with a blue tick printed on it. If not, it does not comply with the South African Standards (Sans). “There’s a lot of Chinese brands on the market. Some are good and some are dangerous. It’s always best to purchase a unit that is Sans-approved.” He said the small gas bottles do not come with a safety valve and that’s how these bottles have always been manufactured. The larger bottles have a safety valve which open, close and vent, thus releasing pressure once it has built up. “This valve saves lives.” In 2004, he was called to the Village

Apart from the cooking, there was lots of fun and entertainment for the family, including music, a jumping castle for the children, and more, and almost R17 000 was raised for the SPCA.

>>candyce.krishna@media24.com RIBBONS4Roses, a non-profit organisation that assists children with cancer and learning difficulties, has a fund-raiser coming up on the lower South Coast. It will take the form of a beauty pageant at San Lameer on Saturday, 15 October. The CEO of the organisation, Ampie Fourie, who is from the rural town of Touws River, had two young brothers. One of them died of cancer at the age of four and the other was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. This affected the family’s lives as their business and home had to be sold to find a facility that could educate her brother. Fourie started Ribbons4 Roses in 2011 and dedicated it to help children fighting cancer, those living with autism, down syndrome and those with disabilities. Although the organisation is based in the Cape, people all over the world assist with fundraising, including Australia. In 2014, the organisation started it’s first beauty competition to raise funds for a little girl, Tiana Leigh. So far R6 000 has been raised and local woman Ulrecka Joshua and Denzille Reddiar, now head the KZN pageant. “I am very excited to be a part of this fund-raiser and am looking forward to meeting all the beautiful young women who enter,” said Joshua. Tickets to the event costs R150. Email ujoshua642@ gmail.com for more details and to enter.

Tourism awards excellence

HE third annual Ugu South Coast Tourism Awards took place on Friday evening at the Port Shepstone Country Club. The turnout was good, despite the rain. The awards celebrate individuals and entities that have contributed positively to tourism on the South Coast. The South Coast Fever was awarded in the Media Initiative category.

Ugu Film Festival attracts big names PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media42.com INFORMATION and entertainment was en joyed at the fourth annual Ugu Film Festival (UGUFF), which was held from 15 to 18 Sep tember. UGUFF is the project of Sollywood CEO, Senzo Zindela, aimed at educating aspiring film writers, producers, actors and other tal

ents in the film industry. The festival also strives to give recognition to those who have prospered in the industry. The festival organisers invited people from all walks of life, including international and local film talents. Zindela said the event was so successful it resulted in international guests signing agreements to use some South Coast loca tions for their films.

“Our Thailand partners enjoyed every minute of it and signed a coproduction agreement to produce an action film star ring a Zulu guy, where they will be convert ing our Zulu dance techniques, and create new martial arts that has never been seen before,” said Zindela. He said the film will look more or less like Onk Bang, the action film starring Tony Jaa.

This year’s event was so big it attracted KZN Film Commission chairman, Welcome Msomi. Guests and stakeholders agreed that this year’s festival turnout was more than expected and the response and engage ments from guests proved that the South Coast is ready for the film industry. HE Port Shepstone Hospital exhibited its health-care services to patients last Wednesday. The aim of the event was for the community to interact with the hospital management, get themselves screened for various health problems and familiarise themselves with the hospital environment. The chairperson of the hospital board, Reverend John Grubb, commended the community for attending these sessions that have grown over time. Staff offered advice and conducted health screenings, free of charge. Services that people were screened for included eyes tests, cardiac, TB, diabetes, hypertension, dental care, kidney screening and occupational therapy. There were information stands of the Road Accident Fund), Hospital Nursing Services and South African National Blood Services. Dr Dlamini Kunene, hospital acting chief executive officer, took people through the services offered and the referral system, which is a critical aspect of service delivery that the public must understand. As a regional hospital, the health facility is the only referral hospital for the three district hospitals, two community health centres, four Hibiscus Coast clinics and seven Umzumbe South clinics in Ugu District. “It becomes very difficult to spread the re-

Music then and now

CANDYCE KRISHNA TUNE in to certain radio stations or Trace music channels and all you hear is “smack that booty” or “shoot that nigga”. Sadly this is what the younger generation call “music” these days. I love music and more often I find myself bopping to any song if it has a nice beat. But since I’m a journalist, the lyrics those songs contain are more important to me than the beat. So I do what we all do when we want to know something - I Google the lyrics and most of the time I am very disappointed with what I find. If it’s a Zulu or Afrikaans song, I ask my friends exactly what it is I’m jamming to. Most of these songs do one of three things – teach youngsters that con-

suming or selling drugs puts you in the “cool league”, that to be disrespectful to women is great just so you can be “that guy”, and most of them condone violence. While I also love rap music, I don’t like all rappers. Tupac Shakur, who died after “somebody bust a cap in his ass” – that actually means he was shot – is my favourite rapper because he rapped about real-life situations - his life to more specific. To me he was a poet, who rapped his life story and made millions of dollars doing so. However, RnB is still at the top of my list when it comes to music genres. I was fortunate enough to be in my teens in the 2000s and I’m pretty sure those were the last of the best years to fall in love. You know why - because songs had words that actually said something you hear a song and you can’t help but think of a special time or person that is linked to it. Now that I’ve given away my age and I’m officially starting to sound like my parents, I have also grown to dislike the “doof-doof” music – as my parents call it. Thank God for them or else I would have no idea who the Rolling Stones, the Bee Gees or the Beatles, and my personal favourite, The Shadows and Cliff Richard are. I’ve just entered a certain age demographic (but I am still referred to as a “spring chicken” by many I’ll have you know) and I find myself downloading “old skool” music. I hear it on the radio or when someone driving past is listening to a certain song and all these great memories come flashing back. I find myself thinking of the people who were with me at the time and often message or call them to catch up. That’s what music is supposed to do take you back in time, make you think of that special person, remind you of great memories. Teenagers, don’t be fooled, music is not meant to make you disrespect women, do drugs or kill people.

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

On being a culture vulture IN tourism, cultural heritage is an integral part of a marketing and product mix and our South Coast and environs is no exception. With September being Heritage Month I attended the Amakhono cultural event out towards Nyandzulu, which just inland from Shelley Beach, and what a wonderful experience it was. The local community, representatives from the traditional leadership, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, local tourism committees, media and the community were entertained within a festive and welcoming atmosphere amid the lush rolling hills and proud homesteads that overlooked the marquee venue erected on a riverside sports field. Children of all ages were joyous in their bouncing on jumping castles and the entertainment from a happy

clown. In the marquee, adults and youth were impressed with the diverse local musical talent that ranged from the traditional, gospel to modern. Being among this welcoming community was humbling and decidedly refreshing. I have been fortunate to have worked in many parts of rural

In the Nyanadzulu area a cultural and hospitality experience has been packaged which I highly recommend- how better to really absorb the authenticity of our Zulu culture. Last year during Africa Bike Week, upcountry bikers stayed in the area and were blown away by the warm hospitality received. They had decided to something different and at the end of their stay, they rode away with a different, yet better opinion of our informal way of life, and how we host our visitors. There are a number of cultural and other entertainment events that occur in our district and I recommend that South Africans and our overseas visitors attend them. This is why our annual Tourism Awards evening last Friday had a cultural dress and heritage theme. Many arrived in very expressive outfits and fun was had all round. This area is rich in talent and diversity and in celebrating it this way we can appreciate the essence of our communities. A wise person once said: “A picture cannot boast a beautiful story unless it has all the entwined radiances and nuances of colour and texture humanity should do the same.”

UGU BEAT First phase of Boboyi Plant upgrade completed FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION WATER supply frustrations in some communities, due to frequent water service interruptions and those of the municipality generated from the demand outstripping the supply capacity, will soon cease following the implementation of the Umzimkhulu Bulk Water Augmentation Project on 8 and 15 September. This upgrade of the Boboyi Plant is a response to the lingering supply shortages that have, for many years, negatively affected supply to the Murchison, Bhomela, Gamalakhe, Nyandezulu, Nositha and surrounding area communities. This multimillion-rand project is being implemented in two phases. Work has unfolded in the first segment with the upgrade of the Boboyi Water works from 54 ML/day to 81 ML/day. The second phase of this project will also be implemented in the cur-

The affected communities will be pleased to know that upon completion, this water works will now have enough water to supply the system and communities will finally receive the long awaited water supply. It is our view, as the municipality, that water is life and as a caring water services authority, we shall continue to provide our communities with this basic right.

THE letter by Alana Valentine in the Fever refers (Not much to watch on DStv - 22 September). Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns. We’d like to reassure you that there is a lot of new and fresh content on DStv every week - and we want to help you find what you would like to watch. We know that most of our customers tend to stick to a few favourite channels – surfing between those channels only when looking for something to watch. There is a lot of great content available across the channels on DStv – we encourage you to try one or two new channels. To help you here, we’re highlighting some of the great British and Australian shows available in the next few weeks: • Victoria – A brilliant drama series following the early life of Queen Victoria, from her accession to the throne at the age of 18 through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. IE uwe het die afgelope paar weke agv. werksverpligtinge weereens baie te doen gekry met die “sosiale media”, veral van die Facebook-soort. Sowel persoonlike as groep-domeine.

AN Lameer beach was the venue of choice for KwaZulu-Natal to celebrate Tourism Month on the lower South Coast. MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, said at the event on Tuesday that he

had thoroughly enjoyed the places he had visited. He said the Oribi Gorge was a stunning venue and encouraged locals to be tourists in their own towns and cities. “You must first tour your own town and city before you visit any others,” he said. He said the South Coast was a prime example of what a tourist destination

should be with it’s lodges, hotels, seven Blue Flag beaches and numerous activities. Zikala added that KZN was proud to boast that it is leading in domestic destinations. “In KZN, there is something for everyone. If you come from India, you will visit places like the Drakensburg, the beaches and other places. But you will make sure you go to Ghandi Settle-

STABLISHED in the early seventies Simsgas is one of South Africa’s independent gas distributors. The Simsgas Port Shepstone

LOCKABLE SLABS

branch was established in 2004 supplying Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), servicing the domestic, commercial and industrial customers from Hibberdene to Port Edward. The distributor is in Marburg on the corner of Harding and Izotsha

roads, and focuses on gas cylinder supplies and gas education to clients. Accredited by LPGSA (Liquefied Petroleum Gas South Africa), Simsgas supplies a flexible energy source with all the benefits of natural gas.

In addition to hot water, gas fires, heating and cooking, LPG can be used to heat swimming pools, patio heaters and braais. LPG burns cleanly, without soot, and has low emissions, and when it combusts and burns, it is odourless. By choosing LPG from Simsgas as the fuel source for your home, you experience not only convenience, but significant environmental and economic benefits as well. Simsgas supplies cylinders of various sizes - 9kg, 14kg, 19kg and 48kg at competitive prices and delivers right to customers’ doorstep within 24 hours. The business has a team of trained personnel handling all installation procedures - from selecting the correct tank sizes and best locations through to the final installation and deliveries of LPG. Simsgas will ensure that the work is completed smoothly and efficiently, with minimum inconvenience. For the best quality service Simsgas is the one-stop gas specialists for all your gas requirements. Simsgas is open from 8am to 5pm from Monday to Friday.

New Alfa Romeo to make its SA debut T

HE Alfa Romeo brand continues to revitalise itself with the planned introduction of a number of new models. The eagerly anticipated Giulia makes its South African debut shortly reigniting the Alfisti passion in the country once again. But apart from this there are also a couple of other stylish Italian introductions that South Africans can look forward to. Following the international launch of the Giulia, the New Alfa Romeo Giulietta will be launched locally on 1 October 2016. The new unmistakable Alfa Romeo family design convention is definitely evident in the Giulietta. This is the new Alfa Romeo paradigm and ultimate expression of the meccanica delle emozioni – or mechanics of emotions – concept. The bold and sporty design is enhanced and embodied by several exterior style elements, such as the one-of-

a-kind honeycomb grille and the new front bumper which recalls the shape of the legendary front trefoil. Similarly, the lettering of the name “Giulietta” and its position on the back wink to those of the Giulia. The new model also sports the refreshed logo, which has been modernised preserving the distinctive style elements which have made it an emblem known and cherished worldwide. Burnished headlights, new bumper inserts, oneof-a-kind alloy rims and new oblique tailpipes complete the new look. The line-up has been rationalised and now features three trim levels - Giulietta, Giulietta Super and Giulietta Veloce. The Giulietta Veloce trim level – the sportiest of the line-up – is even bolder featuring new sports bumpers with Alfa Red profiles, new carbon look headlights, glossy anthracite accents on the mirrors, door handles and on the grille

and fog light surrounds. The exclusive sporty outfit is mirrored by an exclusive interior design ambience packed with premium quality accents. On the inside, the Giulietta Veloce trim level has new leather and Alcantara sports seats with integrated head restraints embellished with contrasting red stitching and “Alfa Romeo” written on the head restraints. Also standard are the contoured leather steering wheel with contrasting red stitching and the carbon look finish dashboard surround and door panels, all complemented by specific matte grey inserts. The sporty characterisation is equally strong on the Giulietta and Giulietta Super versions. The first has grey and black fabric seats, a one-of-a-kind matte black dashboard, leather steering wheel and new black inserts on the tunnel and door pulls. The Super trim level is even bolder

with new Alfa Romeo trademark grey and black fabric “cannelloni” seats. Premium leather seats are available on both trim levels as optional. Also debuting on New Giulietta is Alfa Performance, the exclusive service specifically created to enhance the driving experience. Using an array of digital gauges and instruments, drivers can control the main parameters of the car, measure their performance using special timers and see driving statistics on their smartphone. The engine line-up of New Giulietta now features three turbo petrol engines - the 1.4 Turbo Petrol, the 1.4

Turbo MultiAir TCT and the 1750 Turbo Petrol TCT. Staying true to Alfa Romeo spirit, the Giulietta is light and efficient courtesy of lightweight materials and the perfect weight-to-power ratio. Furthermore, it offers a balanced weight distribution, an evolved suspension system, and a responsive steering. The new model also features a slew of features developed by Magneti Marelli ranging from exhaust systems, suspension, and powertrains, to lighting devices, another confirmation of how the right collaborations create the best designs. - Supplied.

Volvo is now semiautonomous The Volvo XC90.

>> Support system is designed to make the daily commute

T

HE Volvo XC90, which is the reigning WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year in South Africa, has been updated for 2017. Pilot Assist, fitted as standard for semi-autonomous driving, and PowerPulse diesel technology, for a lag-free diesel driving experience, are both now available in

South Africa. Pilot Assist now standard on all models In accordance with the forthcoming Volvo S90, the XC90 now features the latest version of Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology as standard on all models. Able to take

control of acceleration, braking and steering at speeds up to 130 km/h, the support system is designed to make the daily commute – or indeed a longer journey – more relaxing and enjoyable. The all-new XC90 pioneered the original Pilot Assist system which

could be activated at speeds up to 50 km/h – making the typical South African traffic jam an absolute breeze and allowing the driver to relax behind the wheel while enjoying the Swedish luxury and Scandinavian simplicity of Volvo’s flagship SUV. With the latest upgrade, a lead vehicle is no-longer required, and the XC90 is able to maintain safe semi-autonomous driving provided that lane markings are clearly visible on both sides of the vehicle, at speeds up to 130 km/ h. Important to note is that Pilot Assist is an outright support system and has not been designed for the driver to remove their attention from the task of driving. Fully-autonomous Volvos, which will allow for complete hands-off and feet-off autonomous driving, will be available in the future – the first examples of which will be driven by real customers in Gothenburg, Sweden, as part of Volvo’s Drive Me programme, in 2017. The inclusion of Pilot Assist as standard means that all XC90 models now also come standard with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which uses radar to manage acceleration and braking in a more conventional manner, without steering control. PowerPulse diesel technology eliminates turbo lag Introduced globally on the forth-

coming Volvo S90 and now also available for 2017 in the XC90 D5 AWD is Volvo’s world-first PowerPulse technology. Geared to eliminate the effects of turbo lag, PowerPulse turns the Drive-E D5 diesel engine into a lagfree, smoother powerhouse. Volvo Cars is the only car maker using such technology in production vehicles. PowerPulse draws air from the air filter via a compressor into a pressurised two-litre tank. When required, the compressed air is fed by a valve into the exhaust manifold to instantly spool up the turbo. The tank automatically refills after each burst, and the compressed air remains on hand at all times to provide extra boost – on pullaway and during low-speed driving. Naturally with such an upgrade, output has been increased and efficiency has been improved. Power has increased to 173 kW at 4 000 rpm (up from 165 kW) and torque is up by 10 Nm to 480 Nm between 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. Efficiency remains exceptional, with average fuel economy on the combined cycle now 5.7-litres per 100 km (down from 5.8) and carbon emissions now even lower, at 149 g/ km (down from 152). “These two new technological additions to the XC90 range will further boost its value and driver enjoyment,” comments Volvo Car South Africa MD, Greg Maruszewski. “Pilot Assist really makes those long highway drives far more enjoyable, especially when you find yourself in a traffic jam. And, with PowerPulse, the XC90 D5 is even better than it was before – a difficult feat to achieve.” Model year 2017 Volvo XC90s are available across the Volvo Cars dealer network in South Africa. - Supplied.

Center manager Mrs Biyela and the board applauded the foundation for the contribution its continues to make on the South Coast.

Coetzee happy with loose trio S

PRINGBOK coach Allister Coetzee faces some tough choices in naming his team to face the Wallabies in their Castle Lager Rugby Championship match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, but finds himself content and happy with both the midfield and loose trio. While many critics of the sides under Coetzee believe the loose trio currently lacks balance, and certainly lacks a big ball carrier to punch up the middle, the Bok coach expressed his satisfaction with the role of the players in the loose trio, who are set to continue once again this weekend at Loftus. The same goes for the midfield, where Coetzee first tried Damian de Allende and Lionel Mapoe, before dropping both and selecting Jesse Kriel and Juan de Jongh in a midfield that hasn’t sparked either as the Boks have struggled. And while the duo will also continue this weekend, the Boks have been criticised as both players are essentially playing out of position, with De Jongh more favoured at the outside centre berth while Kriel has been more effective in Super Rugby at fullback.

Add Francois Hougaard on the wing for the Boks and there are a number of players who have played out of position this year. Hougaard may well continue on the wing, as moving him back to 9 this week and dropping Faf de Klerk will leave Coetzee with another player out of position as Willie le Roux would have to fill in on the wing then. Le Roux is expected to be in the starting line-up this week, but his role will be an interesting one to watch. One thing is for sure, Coetzee believes his midfield combination is the best he has, even though it, like the loose trio, lacks some punch to take the ball up — a factor that has been a key ingredient in several Springbok teams of the recent past. “I’m very happy with our personnel at centre, I don’t have any issues at centre really. I think our centres have performed well …” Coetzee said. “I think if you talk about attack, and turnover attack, we scored two great tries against Australia from turnover possession and our centres really did their job on attack as well. I’m pleased with the centre combination.” While many out there have been

seems in the Bok set-up that Janse van Rensburg’s defence isn’t up to scratch for Test rugby at the moment and he has aspects he needs to work on, but it is hard to doubt the physical impact he makes for his franchise at Super Rugby and Currie Cup level. “I know a player like Rohan Janse van Rensburg has had a wonderful Super Rugby season. He is probably on the radar and he will get his opportunity when it is the right time. I don’t guess and I don’t get emotional when I watch a game,” Coetzee said of the midfielder. “I look at stats and I look at what we have and these guys, are they capable and what are their stats? And then I will make a call on that. What Rohan can do we still have in Damian as well. I’m happy with the centres as it is at the moment.” But just hours after saying De Allende had the same aspects in his game, the Western Province and Stormers midfielder was released to play Currie Cup rugby, further deepening the debate that the Boks aren’t keen on a big ball carrier in the midfield. In both instances the team need to prove their critics wrong, as another lacklustre performance on both fronts will simply add to the pressure ahead of facing the All Blacks in Durban in a week’s time. — SuperSport.

GROUP of Suid-Natal Primêre pupils braved the rainy weather to take part in golf assessments and clinic at Port Shepstone Country Club on Friday. Organised and conducted by Petrus Ferreira, the aim of the assessments is to get the schools’ golf league teams ready for 2017. Ferreira is the father of the young up-and-coming golfer, Simoné Ferreira, who has lifted a number of trophies in junior competitions nationally. Simoné who also goes to Suid-Natal Primêre, brought home some silverware from the Junior Africa Challenge held in San Lameer Country Club last month, competing against 136 young golfers from around the world. Ferreira said after the headmaster presented Simoné the trophy at assembly in front of pupils, as is cus-

tomary, 102 pupils showed interest in signing up for golf lessons. “A third of these pupils brought back letters from parents confirming their commitment to bring their children for assessment,” said Ferreira. He said during his first round of assessments two weeks ago, 30 pupils pitched up. “Last week it was raining at first, but with 15 minutes of taking on a bit of theory and rules, the weather turned out to the advantage of those who were there.” Ferreira said he is committed to be available on Fridays from 2.30pm to 5pm. “Whether it rains or not, I will be there. On rainy days we will go for the golf “Bible”, the Royal and Ancient rule book, and teach pupils the rules,” he said. All schools from all areas are invited to take part in this initiative and
